Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) is an emerging building material as it has unique benefits over conventional concrete. SCC is a High-Performance Concrete (HPC) having the filling ability, passing ability and segregation resistance. In addition, SCC does not require vibration. However, to develop SCC, an appropriate mix design has to be carried out following EFNARC guidelines. This paper attempts to develop a design mix proportion for grades of SCC such as M25, M30, M35, and M40. The requirements of fresh SCC are validated with appropriate experiments such as the V-funnel test, J-ring test, and slump flow test. Cube compressive strength of different grades of hardened SCC was validated at 28 and 56 days. The other mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity, were also examined for different grades of SCC, and the test results are reported. Fire-resistance of building materials has to be assessed to ensure the fire safety of humans and infrastructure during the event of fire accidents. Stress–strain curves were developed to characterize the behaviour of different grades of SCC under elevated temperatures. Three stages of elevated temperatures, such as 300, 600, and 900 °C with two methods of heating, were considered in this experimental investigation. It was observed that the maximum stress capacity of SCC linearly decreases with respect to the elevated temperature. Also, the peak strain of different grades of SCC increased as the exposure temperature increases. The changes in the ductile property of different grades of SCC are found to be quantitatively evaluated in terms of Energy Absorption Capacity (EAC). The EAC values are found to be decreased when the exposure temperature increases.

Recent developments in the infrastructure urged the requirement of developing concrete with high performance. This research work presents the development of sustainable High Strength Fiber Reinforced Concrete (HSFRC), and its mechanical properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength compared to conventional High Strength Concrete (HSC). Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) was replaced with optimum amount of Micro-Silica (MS) and Pumice Powder (PP) by 15% and 10%. Hybrid Fibers (HF) are added in the mix of 1.5% by volume of concrete. The fibers used are Steel Fiber (SF), Poly-Propylene Fiber (PPF), Basalt Fiber (BF) and Carbon Fiber (CF). Effect of fiber and its performance are compared with conventional HSC. A concrete mix with optimum content of ingredients is desired to satisfy the strength and workability. Compressive strength of mix with HF combination of SF and PPF is found to be higher than other mixes. Mix with SF and BF exhibited higher tensile strength. Contribution of fibers was confirmed by SEM analysis.

Context: The assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is the most important component in prediction and detection of cardiotoxicity in patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy. LVEF may not be sensitive enough to pick the cardiotoxicity early since drop in LVEF occurs in the last and irreversible stage. A 10%–15% early reduction in global longitudinal strain (GLS) by speckle tracking echocardiography proposed to be the earliest indicator of myocardial dysfunction. Aims: The aim of this study was to compare the early detection of cardiotoxicity (at 0 and 3 months) using drop in LVEF with two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE), three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE), and GLS techniques. Settings and Design: This was a prospective cohort study of patients attending cardiooncology clinic in a tertiary care institute. Subjects and Methods: Newly diagnosed 75 cases of cancer of various etiologies, for whom cardiotoxic chemotherapy drugs has to be used, were included from January 2016 to June 2016. Background: Extensive use of computers for both professional and personal purpose has led to an increase in computer related health problems. Aim of this study was to evaluate the awareness regarding symptoms and the related factors in computer vision syndrome (CVS) among a group of information technology (IT) professionals.Methods: This study was conducted among 300 IT employees. After obtaining informed consent, structured questionnaire was given and data collected and analyzed.Results: Out of 300 respondents, 194 (64.7%) were males and 106 (35.3%) females. Mean age was 30.5 years.48.3% had more than eight years of computer usage and 77.3% used computers on an average of 8-12 hours per day. About 201 (67%) of the participants had at least one ocular symptom, most common was dryness (96%). 94.7% reported eyestrain and 86.3% reported redness and itching. Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integration of SiNWs advances lab-on-chip (LOC) technology and offers opportunities for read-out circuit integration, selective and multiplexed detection. In this work, we propose novel scalable pixel-based biosensors exploiting the integration of SiNWs with CMOS in fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator technology. The bacterial reverse mutation assay (Ames) is a fundamental genetic toxicology test, and efforts to miniaturize the regulatory GLP version are essential in assessing genotoxic liabilities earlier in the drug development pipeline. Two versions of the Ames were compared: the six-well (miniaturized) plate and the standard 100-mm plate test at two different laboratories. Of twenty-four chemicals tested, a subset of six chemicals was tested in the six-well test only and the remaining eighteen were evaluated in both versions of the test. The plate incorporation procedure was used with one Escherichia coli and four different Salmonella strains. The six-well test uses the same plating procedure and evaluation methods as the standard Ames assay in 100-mm plates, but the smaller format requires 20% of the test chemical. Additionally, the six-well test uses a limit concentration of 1000 μg/well versus the standard Petri plate test limit concentration of 5000 μg/plate. Testing across the two formats resulted in 100% concordance in overall mutagenicity judgement and 94% concordance across all tester strains and conditions. Known mutagenic positive control chemicals were correctly detected as positive in both formats. The overall conclusion is that the six-well assay results are concordant with the standard assay format in this evaluation and could be a reliable alternative.

Background: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a 3 rd most common lethal cardiovascular disease. The objective was to study the outcome of high and intermediate risk acute pulmonary embolism (PE) with special reference to Tenecteplase. Methods: Retrospective observational study of clinical features and outcome of high and intermediate risk patients with acute pulmonary embolism treated with Tenecteplase from January 2008 to January 2016. Results: 40 patients who were newly diagnosed to have PE with a mean age of 54 years were included in the study. Dyspnea and syncope were the predominant symptoms in both IR and HR. Most sensitive parameter i.e. D-dimer was positive among all 40 cases but cardiac biomarker troponin was positive in 56.8% cases only. Evidence of RV dysfunction was present all cases with 65% cases had presented with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension. Diagnosis of acute pulmonary embolism was confirmed by MDCT of lung. All confirmed cases of acute PE were administered dose adjusted intravenous tenectaplse. Of the 40 patients, 39 were discharged and were under regular follow up for 6 months. In hospital mortality of HR and IR 11% &3.2% respectively but 2 more cases expired within a span of 7 days after discharge due to sepsis and neurological shock. Major bleeding manifestations more in HR as compared to IR group. Conclusions: Tenectaplase is a potent thrombolytic agent which can be used as the drug of choice for acute PE of usual causes without many complications. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of PE with potent thrombolytics can be life-saving.

A study has been undertaken at Agricultural Research Station, Thiruvalla with an objective to study the effect of thermo chemical processing on storability of sugarcane juice to develop a protocol for preservation of sugarcane juice. Fresh sugarcane juice was subjected to ten different treatments. Juice under different treatments was analyzed before preservation and after preservation. The scores for sensory qualities (colour, taste, smell and overall acceptability) reduced significantly with the advancement of storage. Change in physico- chemical characteristics (pH, TSS, titratable acidity and Brix: acid ratio) also followed the same decreasing trend during storage period. The treatment T5 recorded the highest scores in sensory evaluation and it recorded the highest Brix: acid ratio after the storage period, indicating better consumer acceptability. The results revealed that good quality beverage from sugarcane juice with satisfactory storage stability of 30 days at refrigeration could be prepared by adding 0.5ml lime juice, 0.2ml ginger extract and 125 ppm of sodium meta bisulphite per 100 ml of sugarcane juice and microwave pasteurization of the treated juice for one minute. This protocol for preservation of sugarcane juice with microwave pasteurization and preservatives will be very useful for commercial preservation of sugarcane juice.

The main aim of this project is to reduce the greenhouse effect by real time monitoring and controlling of CO2 and CO emission caused due to vehicles and industries using IOT. The Internet of Things (IOT) extends internet connectivity to a diverse range of devices and everyday things that utilize embedded technology to communicate and interact with the external environment, all via the Internet. In this proposal, we have tried to make the CO2 and CO detector intelligent by saving the CO2 and CO levels in different regions. This model adheres to IOT and provides information for utilization of vehicular features based on the CO2 and CO levels. The model is cost effective and also can be easily produced and integrated with vehicles and also in industries.

Griscelli syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by pigmentary dilution of the skin and the hair (silver hair), the presence of large clumps of pigment in hair shafts, and an accumulation of melanosomes in melanocytes. In one variant, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphohistiocytosis, and a combined T-cell and B-cell immunodeficiency are pronounced. The associated immunodeficiency often involves impaired natural killer cell activity, absent delayed-type hypersensitivity, and a poor cell proliferation response to antigenic challenge. Occasionally, impaired lymphocyte function and an inability to produce normal levels of immunoglobulins have also been described. In another variant, neurologic signs are most prominent. We present a case of 1 year male who presented with fever, jaundice, silver hair, heptoslenomegaly, and pancytopenia.

International audience; The Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles with different particle sizes were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method with different reaction time. The synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles were characterized by Powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), High Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy (HRSEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. The effects of the particle size on the structural properties of the prepared samples were investigated usingXRD, SEM and HRSEM. The better optical properties exhibited by CeO2 having smaller particle size has been revealed by UV-Visible study. The Photo-catalytic study showed that the lower particle size CeO2 nanoparticles have higher Photo-catalytic activity for degradation of Methylene Blue. Background: Pre diabetes is a definite risk factor in cases of STEMI. This study was aimed to compare various clinical outcomes, coronary angiographic results and incidence of major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) in prediabetic patients presented with STEMI with those of non prediabetic STEMI patients in a tertiary care centre. Methods: Study was conducted in prediabetic patients presented with STEMI whose fasting serum glucose and glycated hemoglobin level were 100-125 mg/dl and 5.7-6.4%, were respectively. Age and sex matched non prediabetic patients with STEMI was selected as control group. Demographic variables were taken. Further the clinical presentations; findings of coronary angiogram; electrocardiogram (ECG) and 2D echo; morbidity and cardiac mortality were collected and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: Total of 70 patients (35 prediabetic and 35 non prediabetic control) with ACS STEMI were included in the prospective study. The prediabetic patients with ACS STEMI were found with clinical presentation (Killip class III and IV); ECG manifestations (Tachyarrythmia); 2 D echo (Moderate and severe left ventricular dysfunction); angiographic findings (Double and Triple vessel disease, Right coronary artery(RCA), Left circumflex artery (LCX), Long Stents); morbidity (MACE and site hematoma) and cardiac mortality more than the non prediabetic control group. Conclusion: The results showed that prediabetic group had higher Killip class, more multivessel disease, higher MACE and cardiovascular mortality as compared to control group.

Circulating levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF) predict mortality in patients with cirrhosis. We hypothesized that systemic inflammation in acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) will stimulate endothelium, increase vWF levels, and promote platelet microthrombi causing organ failure. In this prospective study, we correlated plasma vWF levels with organ failure, liver disease severity, sepsis, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and also analyzed if vWF levels predicted in-hospital composite poor outcome (i.e. death/discharged in terminal condition/liver transplantation) in consecutive ACLF patients. Twenty-one of the 50 ACLF patients studied had composite poor outcome. ACLF patients had markedly elevated vWF antigen and activity (sevenfold and fivefold median increase, respectively) on days 1 and 3. Median ratio of vWF to a disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13) activity on day 1 was significantly higher in ACLF patients (11.2) compared to 20 compensated cirrhosis patients (3.3) and healthy volunteers (0.9). On day 1, area under ROC curve (AUROC) to predict composite poor outcome of hospital stay for ACLF patients for vWF antigen, vWF activity, and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score were 0.63, 0.68, and 0.74, respectively. vWF activity correlated better with liver disease severity (MELD score, ACLF grade) and organ failure (Sequential Organ Failure Assessment [SOFA] score) than vWF antigen; in contrast, neither vWF antigen nor activity correlated with platelet count, sepsis, or SIRS. vWF levels are markedly elevated, correlate with organ failure, and predict in-hospital survival in ACLF patients. This data provides a mechanistic basis for postulating that vWF-reducing treatments such as plasma exchange may benefit ACLF patients.

Costus picatus (Costaceae) leaves and the whole plant of Coccinia indica (Cucurbitaceae) are used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus in Indian ethnic system of medicine. There are previous phytochemical reports from fruits, seeds, flowers and leaves of Coccinia indica. The stem has remained uninvestigated so far. Polar extract of Costus picatus has been investigated but the non-polar fractions have received scant attention. Since these plants are used as medicine for diabetes an examination of the stem of Coccinia indica and non polar fraction of Costus picatus are also found necessary. This work on the methanolic extract of the stem of Coccinia indica and the hexane extract of the leaves of Costus picatus reports the isolation of lupeol acetate, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, and 3β, 24, 25- trihydroxycycloartane from Costus picatus and docos- 1-ol, docos-8-one, β-sitosterol and betulin from Coccinia indica. Docos-1-ol and docos-8-one are being reported for the first time from natural source and lupeol acetate, stigmasterol, 3β, 24, 25- trihydroxycycloartane and betulin for the first time from these plants. The structure elucidations were done by IR, 1HNMR,13C NMR, 1H-13C INEPT NMR and FAB MS techniques. The radical scavenging activities of the extracts were studied with DPPH using UV-Visible bio spectrophotometer. The radical scavenging activity of Costus picatus is not reported till date.

5,6-Dihydro-6-styryl-2-pyrone (Goniothalamin), is isolated from the leaves of Goniothalamus wightii and identified by spectral analysis and X-ray diffraction studies. FT-IR spectroscopy has also been used to characterize the vibrational bands. The vibrational wavenumbers and corresponding vibrational assignments are examined theoretically using the Gaussian03 set of quantum chemistry codes. Predicted IR and Raman intensities are reported.

Background: Oxidative and nitrosative stress caused by drug metabolism may be a trigger for keratinocyte apoptosis in the epidermis seen in toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and Stevens Johnson syndrome (SJS). Aims: To estimate oxidative damage in the serum and to examine the role of nitric oxide in mediating epidermal damage in patients with TEN and SJS. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted among TEN and SJS patients and controls in a tertiary care center between January 2006 and February 2010. Patients with a maculopapular drug rash without detachment of skin constituted the control group 1 (drug exposed). Patients without a drug rash constituted the control group 2 (drug unexposed). The serum values of protein carbonyls, malondialdehyde, conjugated diene and nitrates were measured. Two-group comparison with the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was used. Significance of differences if any was established using Pearson′s Chi-square test. Results: Ten patients in the SJS-TEN group (study group), 8 patients in control group 1 and 7 patients in control group 2 were included. More than one drug was implicated in 4/10 patients in group 1 and 3/8 patients in group 2. SCORTEN of 0, 1 and 3 at admission were seen in 2, 6 and 2 patients, respectively. The serum values of protein carbonyls, malondialdehyde, conjugated diene and nitrates were not significantly increased in the study group when compared to the controls. Conclusions: There was no elevation of oxidative stress markers in patients with TEN and SJS as compared to the control population.

Idiopathic noncirrhotic intrahepatic portal hypertension (NCIPH), a chronic microangiopathy of the liver caused by arsenicosis from use of contaminated groundwater, was reported from Asia. This study aimed to see, if in the twenty-first century, arsenicosis was present in NCIPH patients at our hospital and, if present, to look for groundwater contamination by arsenic in their residential locality. Twenty-seven liver biopsy proven NCIPH patients, 25 portal hypertensive controls with hepatitis B or C related cirrhosis and 25 healthy controls, matched for residential locality, were studied. Eighty-four percent to 96 % of study subjects belonged to middle or lower socioeconomic category. Arsenicosis was looked for by estimation of arsenic levels in finger/toe nails and by skin examination. Arsenic levels in nails and in ground water (in NCIPH patients with arsenicosis) was estimated by mass spectrometry. Nail arsenic levels were raised in five (10 %) portal hypertensive study subjects [two NCIPH patients (both had skin arsenicosis) and three portal hypertensive controls]. All of these five patients were residents of West Bengal or Bangladesh. Skin arsenicosis was noted in three NCIPH patients (11 %) compared to none of disease/healthy controls. Ground water from residential locality of one NCIPH patient with arsenicosis (from Bangladesh) showed extremely high level of arsenic (79.5 μg/L). Arsenicosis and microangiopathy of liver, possibly caused by environmental contamination continues in parts of Asia. Further studies are needed to understand the mechanisms of such ‘poverty-linked thrombophilia’.

A hydrodistilled oil obtained from the stem bark of Goniothalamus cardiopetalus (Annonaceae) was analyzed by GC/MS. The oil showed a total of 60 components of which 40 compounds representing 67.1% of the oil were identified. Linalool (11.7%), α-pinene (7.0%), trans-pinocarveol (5.2%), caryophyllene oxide (5.0%) -terpineol (4.9%), guaiol (4.4%) camphor (3.9%) and bornyl acetate (3.9%) were found to be the major individual constituents of the oil. The antimicrobial activity of the oil was tested against a panel of 17 bacterial and six fungal strains by the disc diffusion method. The oil inhibited the growth of all test organisms at varying levels and the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were also determined.

An investigation of the leaves of Dysoxylum beddomei has yielded a novel triterpene, named beddomeilactone, together with six known triterpenoids: 3-oxotirucalla-7,24-dien-23-ol, dipterocarpol, niloticin, melianone, melianodiol and 24-epi-melianodiol. The structure and stereochemistry of the new compound were determined on the basis of mass, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopies including NOE difference and spin-spin decoupling studies.

Studies were undertaken at Sugarcane Research Station, Thiruvalla during 1996–97, 1997–98 and 1998– 99 on ratoon crop of sugarcane to determine the effect of time and method of K application. The results revealed that soil application of K at 75 per cent of the recommended dose as basal along with 25 per cent of the recommended dose of K as foliar application at 90 DAP resulted in appreciable increase in millable cane count and cane yield. However, the juice quality remained unaffected with treatment effects. It was also observed that K application beyond 90 days after ratooning (DAR) either through soil or foliar application did not show any significant effects on cane yield and juice quality. Similarly 100 per cent K application as foliar spray could not enhance the cane yield and improve the juice quality.

A new triterpene, 1β,15α-dihydroxy-friedelan-3-one, has been isolated from the stem bark of Salacia beddomei. Its structure has been elucidated on the basis of NMR and MS techniques.

Two linear compounds and three lactones are isolated from the leaves and stem bark of Goniothalamus wightii. Two of these are new compounds. The structures of the compounds are elucidated with the help of spectral studies and comparison with literature data.

Background and Aims: Retinoids are important mediators of cellular differentiation and proliferation in various epithelia of the body including the small intestine. Though alterations in intestinal epithelial cell proliferation have been noted in liver cirrhosis, mechanisms involved in the process are not well understood. This study examined the levels of various retinoids and retinoid-metabolizing enzymes in the small intestine during development of liver cirrhosis. Methods: Four groups of animals were used (control, phenobarbitone control, thioacetamide and carbon tetrachloride treatment). Twice-weekly intragastric or i.p. administration of carbon tetrachloride or thioacetamide, respectively, produced liver cirrhosis after 3 months, which was confirmed through histology and serum markers. Retinoid levels were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: A decrease in the levels of retinal, retinoic acid and retinol was evident in the intestine by 3 months, when cirrhosis was evident histologically, and these remained low until 6 months. A decrease in the activities of retinaldehyde oxidase, retinaldehyde reductase and retinol dehydrogenase was also seen in intestine from cirrhotic rats. Conclusion: These results suggest that altered retinoid metabolism in the intestine of cirrhotic rats might have an influence on changes in intestinal epithelial cell differentiation, seen in liver cirrhosis.

Secondary metabolites from Dysoxylum malabaricum and Dysoxylum beddomei were tested against mature and immature stage of the mosquito vector Anopheles stephensi under laboratory conditions. The triterpenes 3beta,24,25-trihydroxycycloartane and beddomeilactone from D. malabaricum and D. beddomei showed strong larvicidal, pupicidal and adulticidal activity. They also affected the reproductive potential of adults by acting as oviposition deterrents. The highest concentration tested (10 ppm) of both compounds evoked more than 90% mortality and oviposition deterrence.

A new triterpene, 1β,15α-dihydroxy-friedelan-3-one, has been isolated from the stem bark of Salacia beddomei. Its structure has been elucidated on the basis of NMR and MS techniques.

Phytochemical investigations on the leaves of Dysoxylum malabaricum and Dysoxylum beddomei result in the isolation of a number of triterpenes. Acetylation and deacetylation studies on some of the representative triterpenes show appreciable rate enhancement and increase of yield in the presence of microwave radiation. Details of isolation of triterpenes, acetylation and deacetylation procedures and their results form the subject of the paper. Triterpenes of three skeletal types namely lupane, tirucallane and cycloartane are examined. All the triterpenes examined indicate an increase of cytotoxicity with acetylation.

Two triterpenes 21R,23R-epoxy-21alpha-ethoxy-24S,25-dihydroxyapotirucall-7-en-3-one and 24R-acetoxy-3beta,25-dihydroxycycloartane were isolated from the leaves of Dysoxylum malabaricum together with eight known compounds lupeone, lupeol. sitosterol, dipterocarpol, cycloart-25-ene-3beta,24-diol, 24R,25-dihydroxycycloartan-3-one, 3beta,24R,25-trihydroxycycloartane and ergosta-5,24(24(1))-diene-3beta,4beta,20S-triol. The complete 1H and 13C NMR spectral assignment of the new apotirucallene triterpenoid has been achieved by 1H-1H COSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments.

Residual effects of sulphur application on the ratoon crop of sugarcane were studied during 1998–1999 and 2000–2001. The application of sulphur at 60 kg ha-1 in the form of gypsum in the plant crop created residual effects on the growth and development of the ratoon crop and appreciably increased the cane and sugar yield. The cane yield increased to the tune of 8.47 and 10.37 per cent as compared to control. However, the residual effect of sulphur nutrition carried out to the plant crop was not reflected on the juice quality of ratoon crop.
