Crown widths of woody plant species growing in urban areas are of considerable importance as an overall indicator of health and also serve as an important factor for assessing leaf area and associated ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, air pollution removal, air temperature cooling, and rainfall interception. Unfortunately, assessing crown widths in urban environments is often challenging and time consuming. To help reduce data collection costs and provide consistency over time, models to predict crown widths for urban-grown species were developed using data from 49 cities across the U.S. and Southern Canada. The effort consisted of fitting mixed models for 29 species groups that encompassed 964 species. Cities were considered a random effect and were statistically significant for 22 of the 29 groups. The need for urban-specific crown width models was demonstrated via examination of prediction biases found when applying crown width models based on forest grown trees, where under-prediction up to about 20% was found for the same species growing in urban areas. Application of the models was evaluated by using crown width predictions instead of observed values for calculations of crown leaf area. Mean percent differences in leaf area were about ±10% across most species groups. Further improvements to national-scale urban crown width models should be pursued as additional data become available via i-Tree, Urban FIA, and possibly other sources where data collection protocols are compatible.

Given the large and increasing amount of urban, suburban, and exurban land use on Earth, there is a need to accurately assess net primary productivity (NPP) of urban ecosystems. However, the heterogeneous and dynamic urban mosaic presents challenges to the measurement of NPP, creating landscapes that may appear more similar to a savanna than to the native landscape replaced. Studies of urban biomass have tended to focus on one type of vegetation (e.g., lawns or trees). Yet a focus on the ecology of the city should include the entire urban ecosystem rather than the separate investigation of its parts. Furthermore, few studies have attempted to measure urban aboveground NPP (ANPP) using field-based methods. Most studies project growth rates from measurements of tree diameter to estimate annual ANPP or use remote sensing approaches. In addition, field-based methods for measuring NPP do not address any special considerations for adapting such field methods to urban landscapes. Frequent planting and partial or complete removal of herbaceous and woody plants can make it difficult to accurately quantify increments and losses of plant biomass throughout an urban landscape. In this study, we review how ANPP of urban landscapes can be estimated based on field measurements, highlighting the challenges specific to urban areas. We then estimated ANPP of woody and herbaceous vegetation over a 15-year period for Baltimore, MD, USA using a combination of plot-based field data and published values from the literature. Autoinhibition is a mechanism used to regulate protein function, often by making functional sites inaccessible through the interaction with a cis-acting inhibitory domain. Such autoinhibitory domains often display a substantial degree of structural disorder when unbound, and only become structured in the inhibited state. This conformational dynamics makes it difficult to study the structural origin of regulation, including effects of regulatory post-translational modifications. Here, we study the autoinhibition of the Dbl Homology domain in the protein Vav1 by the so-called acidic inhibitory domain. We use molecular simulations to study the process by which a mostly unstructured inhibitory domain folds upon binding and how transient exposure of a key buried tyrosine residue makes it accessible for phosphorylation. We show that the inhibitory domain, which forms a helix in the bound and inhibited stated, samples helical structures already before binding and that binding occurs via a molten-globule-like intermediate state. Together, our results shed light on key interactions that enable the inhibitory domain to sample a finely-tuned equilibrium between an inhibited and a kinase-accessible state.

A better knowledge of $(n,xn)$ reaction cross sections is important for both reaction modeling and energy applications. This article focuses on inelastic scattering of neutrons off $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ for which improvements are needed to better constrain evaluations and solve inconsistencies in nuclear power reactor calculations. A new precise measurement of $(n,xn\ensuremath{\gamma})$ reaction cross sections on $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ has been performed at the GELINA (Geel Electron LINear Accelerator) neutron facility operated by EC-JRC-Geel (Belgium) with the GRAPhEME (GeRmanium array for Actinides PrEcise MEasurements) setup. The prompt $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy method coupled to time-of-flight measurements is used to extract $(n,xn\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross section values which can be further combined to infer the total neutron inelastic scattering cross section. Cross section data for 18 $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transitions (five never measured before) are presented and compared to the data in the literature. Emphasis is especially given to the uncertainty determination to produce partial cross section data as accurate as possible. Due to intrinsic limitations of the experimental method, the use of additional nuclear structure information coupled with theoretical modeling is required to determine the total $(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ cross section over the whole neutron energy range. We have investigated modeling aspects of the $^{238}\mathrm{U}(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections related to the description of compound nucleus and preequilibirum mechanisms as well as the discrete part of nuclear structure. Through comparison between experimental and calculated $(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\gamma})$ cross sections, we pinpoint inaccuracies in the description of specific reaction mechanisms and challenge recently implemented models. This helps improving the whole modeling of the $(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ reaction.

Using the Andrade-derived Sundberg-Cooper rheology, we apply several improvements to the secular tidal evolution of TRAPPIST-1e and the early history of Pluto-Charon under the simplifying assumption of homogeneous bodies. By including higher-order eccentricity terms (up to and including e20), we find divergences from the traditionally used e2 truncation starting around e=0.1. Order-of-magnitude differences begin to occur for e>0.6. Critically, higher-order eccentricity terms activate additional spin-orbit resonances. Worlds experiencing nonsynchronous rotation can fall into and out of these resonances, altering their long-term evolution. Nonzero obliquity generally does not generate significantly higher heating; however, it can considerably alter orbital and rotational evolution. Much like eccentricity, obliquity can activate new tidal modes and resonances. Tracking the dual-body dissipation within Pluto and Charon leads to faster evolution and dramatically different orbital outcomes. Based on our findings, we recommend future tidal studies on worlds with e≥0.3 to take into account additional eccentricity terms beyond e2. This threshold should be lowered to e>0.1 if nonsynchronous rotation or nonzero obliquity is under consideration. Due to the poor convergence of the eccentricity functions, studies on worlds that may experience very high eccentricity (e≥0.6) should include terms with high powers of eccentricity. We provide these equations up to e10 for arbitrary obliquity and nonsynchronous rotation. Finally, the assumption that short-period, solid-body exoplanets with e≥0.1 are tidally locked in their 1:1 spin-orbit resonance should be reconsidered. Higher-order spin-orbit resonances can exist even at these relatively modest eccentricities, while previous studies have found such resonances can significantly alter stellar-driven climate., The Planetary Science Journal, 2 (1), ISSN:2632-3338

We introduce a new software, called Marbles, that employs SAXS intensities to predict the shape of membrane proteins embedded into membrane nanodiscs. To gain computational speed and efficient convergence, the strategy is based on a hybrid approach that allows one to account for the nanodisc contribution to the SAXS intensity through a semi-analytical model, while the embedded membrane protein is treated as set of beads, similarly to well known ab-initio methods. The code, implemented in C++ with a Python user interface, provides a good performance and includes the possibility to systematically treat unstructured domains. We prove the reliability and flexibility of our approach by benchmarking the code on a toy model and two proteins of very different geometry and size.

Tidal interactions between planets or stars and the bodies that orbit them dissipate energy in their interiors. The dissipated energy heats the interior and a fraction of that energy will be released as seismic energy. Here we formalize a model to describe the tidally-driven seismic activity on planetary bodies based on tidal dissipation. To constrain the parameters of our model we use the seismic activity of the Moon, driven by tidal dissipation from the Earth-Moon interactions. We then apply this model to predict the amount of seismic energy release and largest seismic events on other moons in our Solar System and exoplanetary bodies. We find that many moons in the Solar System should be more seismically active than the Earth's Moon and many exoplanets should exhibit more seismic activity than the Earth. Finally, we examine how temporal-spatial variations in tidal dissipation manifest as variations in the locations and timing of seismic events on these bodies.

This report provides detailed protocols for urban tree monitoring data collection. Specifically, we discuss the core variables necessary for field-based monitoring projects, including field crew identification, field crew experience level, tree record identifier, location, site type, land use, species, mortality status, crown vigor, and trunk diameter. The intent of this Field Guide is to serve urban forest managers and researchers who collect longitudinal field data on urban trees, as well as interns and citizen scientists. This report is a companion document to Urban Tree Monitoring: A Resource Guide.

Overstory and understory treatments were established in natural oak stands and red pine plantations in Michigan in 1991 to test the hypotheses that (1) oak seedling survival and growth would be greater in pine than oak stands and (2) removal of competitors would enhance oak seedling performance. Late spring prescribed fires were implemented in 2002 and 2008 to investigate their effectiveness in controlling understory red maple. Performance of planted northern red oaks has been monitored since 1991 and the abundance of naturally regenerating oak and red maple seedlings and sprouts in different size classes has been documented since 2001. A subset of oaks has been protected against deer browsing since planting. Results suggest partial competitor removal enhances oak seedling and sprout performance, whereas complete removal increases mortality from browsing and frost. Increases in red maple abundance and decreases in oak abundance were documented after the prescribed fires in 2015. Greater growth and survival of planted oaks was observed in the pine stands, provided they were protected from browsing. Based on these results, the most viable management scenario for maximizing survival and growth of oak seedlings and sprouts in the study region would include protecting oak seedlings from deer in 25% canopy cover shelterwoods in pine plantations. Opportunities exist for developing systems involving alternating rotations and mixtures of oak and pine.

Purpose The radiobiology of prostate cancer may favor the extreme hypofractionation inherent in stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT); however, data from a large multicenter study are lacking. We therefore examined the hypothesis that dose-escalated SBRT can be safely administered across multiple institutions, with favorable 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates compared with historical controls. Methods and Materials Twenty-one centers enrolled 309 patients with prostate adenocarcinoma: 172 with low-risk (LR) and 137 with intermediate-risk (IR) disease. All were treated with a non-coplanar robotic SBRT platform using real-time tracking of implanted fiducials. The prostate was prescribed 40 Gy in 5 fractions of 8 Gy. We assessed toxicities using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 3 and biochemical failure using the “nadir + 2” definition. The study population yielded 90% power to identify excessive (>10%) rates of grade ≥3 genitourinary (GU) or gastrointestinal toxicities and, in the LR group, 80% power to show superiority in DFS over a 93% historical comparison rate. Results At a median follow-up of 61 months, 2 LR patients (1.2%) and 2 IR patients (1.5%) experienced grade 3 GU toxicities, far below the 10% toxicity rate deemed excessive (upper limits of 95% confidence interval, 3.5% and 4.3%, respectively). No grade 4 or 5 toxicities occurred. All grade 3 toxicities were GU, occurring 11 to 51 months after treatment. For the entire group, the actuarial 5-year overall survival rate was 95.6% and the DFS rate was 97.1%. The 5-year DFS rate was 97.3% for LR patients (superior to the 93% DFS rate for historical controls; P = .0008; lower limit of 95% confidence interval, 94.6%) and 97.1% for IR patients. Conclusions Dose-escalated prostate SBRT was administered with minimal toxicity in this multi-institutional study. Relapse rates compared favorably with historical controls. SBRT is a suitable option for LR and IR prostate cancer.

Recent estimates of Mercury’s rotational state yield different obliquity values, resulting in normalized polar moment of inertia values of either 0.333 or 0.346. In addition, recent measurements of Mercury’s tidal response, as expressed by its Love number k 2, are higher than previously reported. These different measurements have implications for our understanding of Mercury’s interior structure. We perform a comprehensive analysis of models of Mercury’s interior structure using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach, where we explore models that satisfy the various measurements of moments of inertia and mean density. In addition, we explore models that either have Mercury’s tidal response as a measurement or predict its tidal response. We find that models that match the lower polar moment value also fit or predict the recent, higher Love number. Models that match the higher polar moments predict Love numbers even higher than current estimates. For the resulting interior structure models, we find a wide range of viscosities at the core–mantle boundary, including low values that could be consistent with the presence of partial melt, with higher viscosities also equally allowed in our models. Despite the possibility of low viscosities, our results do not show a preference for particularly high temperatures at the core–mantle boundary. Our results include predicted values for the pressure and temperature of Mercury’s core, and the displacement Love numbers.

The collection and analysis of urban forest inventory data has been steadily increasing in recent decades. In addition to typical assessments such as number of trees, size distribution, and species composition, estimates of ecosystem services provide empirical indicators of quantity and monetary value to anthropologic populations. As most urban inventories are sample-based, sources of uncertainty and their magnitude provide important information for judging the reliability of estimated population parameters. Most modern analysis tools provide an indication of uncertainty via a sampling error statistic, but other types of uncertainty due to measurements or statistical models are not accounted for. In this study, we examined measurement variation for a suite of urban tree attributes and found measurements were equally or less variable than those taken on forest-grown trees. The notable exception was tree diameter which was more highly variable. In addition to quantifying the measurement variability, simulations that propagate the variation were conducted to assess the additional variance incurred for estimates of ecosystem services and associated valuations. The results generally indicated an increase of about 1% or less in the standard error of the estimate for most ecosystem services and their value. Measurement variation may contribute larger amounts of uncertainty for urban inventories lacking adequate field crew training and quality assurance processes.

Baroreceptor activation therapy (BAT) has been available for several years for treatment of therapy-refractory hypertension (trHTN). This procedure is currently being carried out in a limited number of centers in Germany, also with the aim of offering a high level of expertise through sufficient experience; however, a growing number of patients who are treated with BAT experience problems that treating physicians are confronted with in routine medical practice. In order to address these problems, a consensus conference was held with experts in the field of trHTN in November 2016, which summarizes the current evidence and experience as well as the problem areas in handling BAT patients.

Citizen science has been gaining popularity in ecological research and resource management in general and in urban forestry specifically. As municipalities and nonprofits engage volunteers in tree data collection, it is critical to understand data quality. We investigated observation error by comparing street tree data collected by experts to data collected by less experienced field crews in Lombard, IL; Grand Rapids, MI; Philadelphia, PA; and Malmo, Sweden. Participants occasionally missed trees (1.2%) or counted extra trees (1.0%). Participants were approximately 90% consistent with experts for site type, land use, dieback, and genus identification. Within correct genera, participants recorded species consistent with experts for 84.8% of trees. Mortality status was highly consistent (99.8% of live trees correctly reported as such), however, there were few standing dead trees overall to evaluate this issue. Crown transparency and wood condition had the poorest performance and participants expressed concerns with these variables; we conclude that these variables should be dropped from future citizen science projects. In measuring diameter at breast height (DBH), participants had challenges with multi-stemmed trees. For single-stem trees, DBH measured by participants matched expert values exactly for 20.2% of trees, within 0.254 cm for 54.4%, and within 2.54 cm for 93.3%. Participants’ DBH values were slightly larger than expert DBH on average (+0.33 cm), indicating systematic bias. Volunteer data collection may be a viable option for some urban forest management and research needs, particularly if genus-level identification and DBH at coarse precision are acceptable. To promote greater consistency among field crews, we suggest techniques to encourage consistent population counts, using simpler methods for multi-stemmed trees, providing more resources for species identification, and more photo examples for other variables. Citizen science urban forest inventory and monitoring projects should use data validation and quality assurance procedures to enhance and document data quality.

This paper reports cross-section measurements of the ($n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}}$) and ($p,{p}^{\ensuremath{'}}$) reactions on $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$ at Geel Electron Linear Accelerator and at the 9-MV Tandem Accelerator of Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering, respectively. The main purpose was to measure the neutron- and proton-induced inelastic $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-production cross sections for all observed transitions in $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$, followed by the calculation of the corresponding total inelastic cross section. The results are compared with theoretical calculations performed using the talys 1.9 code, evaluated nuclear data, and previously reported experimental data. The broader goal of this work is to study whether and to what extent the neutron-induced inelastic cross sections of these nuclei can be inferred from those obtained using suitable charged particle reactions. We show that, by making use of the formal similarities between the neutron- and the proton-target optical model potentials and isospin symmetry in mirror nuclei, one can develop a procedure that combines experimental proton-induced inelastic cross sections with theoretical calculations to infer neutron inelastic cross sections. For $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ and $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$, the precision associated with this procedure is around 10--20% for most of the incident energy range.

Brian Henning’s chapter takes a close look at numerous key passages that shift our understanding of Whitehead (including, for instance, the influence of C. D. Broad as a philosophical foil), and, just as importantly, notes the subjects and terms missing from this first year of lectures which we might have expected to find, including God and even (mostly) creativity. While there may be no ‘smoking gun’ in the lectures which fundamentally contradicts previous understandings of Whitehead, they deepen our understanding of his philosophical development, not to mention reveal his explicit thoughts on specific philosophers and scientists who are seldom discussed in his published works.

Background: Accidental dural puncture is an uncommon complication of epidural analgesia and can cause postdural puncture headache (PDPH). We aimed to describe management practices and outcomes after PDPH treated by epidural blood patch (EBP) or no EBP. Methods: Following ethics committee approval, patients who developed PDPH after accidental dural puncture were recruited from participating countries and divided into two groups, those receiving EBP or no EBP. Data registered included patient and procedure characteristics, headache symptoms and intensity, management practices, and complications. Follow-up was at 3 months. Results: A total of 1001 patients from 24 countries were included, of which 647 (64.6%) received an EBP and 354 (35.4%) did not receive an EBP (no-EBP). Higher initial headache intensity was associated with greater use of EBP, odds ratio 1.29 (95% confidence interval 1.19–1.41) per pain intensity unit increase. Headache intensity declined sharply at 4 h after EBP and 127 (19.3%) patients received a second EBP. On average, no or mild headache (numeric rating score≤3) was observed 7 days after diagnosis. Intracranial bleeding was diagnosed in three patients (0.46%), and backache, headache, and analgesic use were more common at 3 months in the EBP group. Conclusions: Management practices vary between countries, but EBP was more often used in patients with greater initial headache intensity. EBP reduced headache intensity quickly, but about 20% of patients needed a second EBP. After 7 days, most patients had no or mild headache. Backache, headache, and analgesic use were more common at 3 months in patients receiving an EBP. © 2020 British Journal of Anaesthesia

The guidelines proposed in Urban Tree Monitoring: A Resource Guide (hereafter referred to as the Resource Guide) were developed and refined over many years to address the need for standardized urban tree monitoring protocols. The Resource Guide provides in-depth guidance for urban forest managers and researchers who want to design and implement a tree monitoring project. This Resource Guide is a companion to Urban Tree Monitoring: A Field Guide; however, the Resource Guide can also be used on its own. The Resource Guide is divided into three parts. In Part I, we discuss (1) the varied goals of monitoring projects and how to match data collection to those goals, (2) the development of these urban tree monitoring standards, (3) types of monitoring projects, and (4) connections to other protocols for urban tree data collection. We offer guidance on methods for recording tree location, developing tree record identifiers, organizing spreadsheets and databases, choosing data collection systems, fostering research-practice partnerships, training crews, and managing fieldwork. In Part II, we present five monitoring data sets: Minimum Data Set, Tree Data Set, Site Data Set, Young Tree Management Data Set, and Community Data Set. We list study goals that could be addressed with each data set and descriptions of relevant variables. We also provide guidance regarding which variables are best suited for beginner and advanced crews. Lastly, in Part III we include appendices with additional resources for designing and implementing tree monitoring projects.

A natural nickel sample was used at the GELINA (Geel Electron LINear Accelerator) neutron source of the European Commission, Joint Research Centre, Geel to measure the neutron inelastic cross sections. The GAINS (Gamma Array for Inelastic Neutron Scattering) spectrometer was employed to detect the emitted γ rays while a 235U fission chamber monitored the neutron flux. We report the preliminary production cross sections corresponding to the first transitions in 58,60Ni in comparison with previously reported data and with TALYS 1.9 calculations performed using the default input parameters.
