Abstract

A thick neutron skin emerges from the first determination of root mean square radii of the proton distributions for 17−22N from charge changing cross section measurements around 900A MeV at GSI. Neutron halo effects are signalled for 22N from an increase in the proton and matter radii. The radii suggest an unconventional shell gap at N = 14 arising from the attractive proton–neutron tensor interaction, in good agreement with shell model calculations. Ab initio, in-medium similarity re-normalization group, calculations with a state-of-the-art chiral nucleon–nucleon and three-nucleon interaction reproduce well the data approaching the neutron drip-line isotopes but are challenged in explaining the complete isotopic trend of the radii. Abstract

The γ-ray emission from the nuclei 62,64Fe following Coulomb excitation at bombarding energy of 400-440 AMeV was measured with special focus on E1 transitions in the energy region 4-8 MeV. The unstable neutron-rich nuclei 62,64Fe were produced at the FAIR-GSI laboratories and selected with the FRS spectrometer. The γ decay was detected with AGATA. From the measured γ-ray spectra the summed E1 strength is extracted and compared to microscopic quasi-particle phonon model calculations. The trend of the E1 strength with increasing neutron number is found to be fairly well reproduced with calculations that assume a rather complex structure of the 1− states (three-phonon states) inducing a strong fragmentation of the E1 nuclear response below the neutron binding energy.

Abstract

Liver transplantation (LT) is an established treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease. The significant advances in surgical technique, immunosuppression therapy, and anesthesiological management have dramatically improved short- and long-term outcomes. The aim of this study is to correlate specific surgical and anesthesiological variables with causes of early death in LT recipients.A retrospective observational analysis of adult patients who underwent LT in the period 2012 to 2016 and died within 90 days following LT was conducted. Exclusion criteria were intraoperative death, split liver, and domino transplant. Death was considered a dependent variable and classified into 3 different groups: death by sepsis, vascular events not related to the graft, and primary non-function. Donor and recipient variables were considered and analyzed using Fisher's exact test.Statistically significative associations (P value .05) were found between renal function support, retransplantation, and the number of fresh frozen plasma units transfused in one group and early death due to sepsis in the other.This study identified some risk factors associated with the specific cause of early death in liver transplantation. The clinical implications of these findings are the ability to stratify patients at high risk of early death by planning more intensive and accurate management for them.

Abstract

International audience; Isomeric states in isotopes in the vicinity of doubly-magic 208Pb were populatedfollowing reactions of a relativistic 208Pb primary beam impinging on a9Be fragmentation target. Secondary beams of 198,200,202,206Pb and 206Hg wereisotopically separated and implanted in a passive stopper positioned in thefocal plane of the GSI Fragment Separator. Delayed γ rays were detected withthe Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Decay schemes were reevaluatedand interpreted with shell-model calculations. The momentumdependentpopulation of isomeric states in the two-nucleon hole nuclei206Pb/206Hg was found to differ from the population of multi neutron-holeisomeric states in 198,200,202Pb.

Abstract

D. Ralet et al. -- 11 pags., 10 figs., 3 tabs., Background: In the neutron-rich A≈100 mass region, rapid shape changes as a function of nucleon number as well as coexistence of prolate, oblate, and triaxial shapes are predicted by various theoretical models. Lifetime measurements of excited levels in the molybdenum isotopes allow the determination of transitional quadrupole moments, which in turn provides structural information regarding the predicted shape change. Purpose: The present paper reports on the experimental setup, the method that allowed one to measure the lifetimes of excited states in even-even molybdenum isotopes from mass A=100 up to mass A=108, and the results that were obtained. Method: The isotopes of interest were populated by secondary knock-out reaction of neutron-rich nuclei separated and identified by the GSI fragment separator at relativistic beam energies and detected by the sensitive PreSPEC-AGATA experimental setup. The latter included the Lund-York-Cologne calorimeter for identification, tracking, and velocity measurement of ejectiles, and AGATA, an array of position sensitive segmented HPGe detectors, used to determine the interaction positions of the γ ray enabling a precise Doppler correction. The lifetimes were determined with a relativistic version of the Doppler-shift-attenuation method using the systematic shift of the energy after Doppler correction of a γ-ray transition with a known energy. This relativistic Doppler-shift-attenuation method allowed the determination of mean lifetimes from 2 to 250 ps. Results: Even-even molybdenum isotopes from mass A=100 to A=108 were studied. The decays of the low-lying states in the ground-state band were observed. In particular, two mean lifetimes were measured for the first time: τ=29.7-9.1+11.3 ps for the 4+ state of Mo108 and τ=3.2-0.7+0.7 ps for the 6+ state of Mo102. Conclusions: The reduced transition strengths B(E2), calculated from lifetimes measured in this experiment, compared to beyond-mean-field calculations, indicate a gradual shape transition in the chain of molybdenum isotopes when going from A=100 to A=108 with a maximum reached at N=64. Abstract

We report proton radii of 12-19C densities derived from first accurate charge changing cross section measurements at 900A MeV with a carbon target. A thick neutron surface evolves from ~0.5 fm in 15C to ~1 fm in 19C. Also, the halo radius in 19C is found to be 6.4±0.7 fm as large as 11Li. Ab initio calculations based on chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces reproduce the radii well.

Abstract

Charge-changing cross sections at high energies are expected to provide useful information on nuclear charge radii. No reliable theory to calculate the cross section has yet been available. We develop a formula using Glauber and eikonal approximations and test its validity with recent new data on carbon isotopes measured at around $900A$ MeV. We first confirm that our theory reproduces the cross sections of $^{12,13,14}\mathrm{C}+^{12}\mathrm{C}$ consistently with the known charge radii. Next we show that the cross sections of $^{12\ensuremath{-}19}\mathrm{C}$ on a proton target are all well reproduced provided the role of neutrons is accounted for. We also discuss the energy dependence of the charge-changing cross sections.

Abstract

Boron doped polysiloxane scintillators have been produced with different concentrations of boron and their scintillation yields have been studied as a function of the boron content under α, γ and fast and thermal neutrons irradiation. Their response has been compared with standard commercial plastic scintillators, namely EJ-212 as plastic scintillator and EJ-254 as boron doped scintillator. The produced samples exhibited a scintillation yield similar to EJ-212. The effect of boron on the energy transfer mechanism and on the polymer radiation hardness has been investigated by means of fluorescence and ion beam induced luminescence (IBIL) measurements. Detection efficiencies for thermal neutrons higher than commercial plastic scintillators have been attained with boron doped samples.

Abstract

International audience; 206Hg was populated in the fragmentation of an E∕A = 1 GeV 208Pb beam at GSI. It was part of a campaign to study nuclei around 208Pb via relativistic Coulomb excitation. The observation of the known isomeric states confirmed the identification of the fragmentation products. The isomeric decays were also used to prove that the correlations between beam identification detectors and the AGATA γ-ray tracking array worked properly and that the tracking efficiency was independent of the time relative to the prompt flash.

Abstract

Reduced transition strengths of the deexciting transitions from the first two excited states in 33Ar were measured in a relativistic Coulomb excitation experiment at the GSI Helmholtz center. The radioactive ion beam was produced by fragmentation of a primary 36Ar beam on a 9Be target followed by the selection of the reaction product of interest via the GSI Fragment Separator. The 33Ar beam hit a secondary 197Au target with an energy of approximately 145 MeV/nucleon. An array of high-purity germanium cluster detectors and large-volume BaF2 scintillator detectors were employed for γ -ray spectroscopy at the secondary target position. The Lund-York-Cologne Calorimeter was used to track the outgoing ions and to identify the nuclear reaction channels. For the two lowest energy excited states of 33Ar the reduced transition strengths have been determined. With these first results the Tz = −3/2 nucleus 33Ar is now, together with 21Na (Tz = −1/2), the only neutron-deficient odd-A sd shell nucleus in which experimental transition strengths are available. The experimental values are compared to results of shell-model calculations which describe simultaneously mirror-energy differences and transition-strength values of mirror pairs in the sd shell in a consistent way

Abstract

A measurement of the reduced transition probability for the excitation of the ground state to the first 2+ state in 104Sn has been performed using relativistic Coulomb excitation at GSI. 104Sn is the lightest isotope in the Sn chain for which this quantity has been measured. The result is a key point in the discussion of the evolution of nuclear structure in the proximity of the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn. The value B(E2; 0+ → 2+) = 0.10(4) e2b2 is significantly lower than earlier results for 106Sn and heavier isotopes. The result is well reproduced by shell model predictions and therefore indicates a robust N = Z = 50 shell closure.

Abstract

Production cross sections of nitrogen isotopes from high-energy carbon isotopes on hydrogen and carbon targets have been measured for the first time for a wide range of isotopes. The fragment separator FRS at GSI was used to deliver C isotope beams. The cross sections of the production of N isotopes were determined by charge measurements of forward going fragments. The cross sections show a rapid increase with the number of neutrons in the projectile. Abstract

The chain of Barium isotopes enables us to study experimentally the evolution of nuclear quadrupole collectivity from the shell closure at N = 82 towards neutron-deficient or neutron-rich deformed nuclei. The TU Darmstadt group has investigated several nuclei from stable 130;132 Ba up to radioactive 140;142 Ba with the projectile-Coulomb excitation technique including the use of the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM). Lifetimes of quadrupole-collective states of 132 Ba and 140 Ba were obtained for the first time as well as the static electric quadrupole moments Q(2 + ) for 130;132 Ba and 140;142 Ba. The results are compared to Monte Carlo shell model and Beyond-Mean-Field calculations. The phenomenon of shell stabilization in the N = 80 isotones is further investigated by measurements of the B(E2;2 + ! 0 + ) values of 140 Nd and 142 Sm and comparison to the quasi-particle phonon model and shell-model calculations.

Abstract

The hydrothermal deposition of CrO(OH) from aqueous chromium(III) chloride, nitrate, and perchlorate, and of Cr3(SO4)2(OH)5•H2O and Cr(OH)SO4•2H2O(?) from aqueous chromium(III) sulfate, has been investigated. Aqueous chromium(III) is oxidized to chromium(VI) by 0.4 M perchloric acid above 225 °C, and by molecular oxygen above 250 °C. Aqueous chromium(III) can react at 300 °C with iron or steel, cobalt, and copper to produce FeCr2O4, CoCr2O4, and Cu2Cr2O4, respectively. CrO(OH) reacts with type 316 stainless steel at 440 °C in supercritical water of density 0.7 g cm−3 to yield (Fe,Ni)-Cr2O4, which is the "cubic Cr2O3" of Laubengayer and McCune. The spinels MCr2O4 (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co) can be made hydrothermally at ca. 300 °C from Cr(OH)3 and M(OH)2. This information is relevant to corrosion phenomena, and the possible hydrothermal origin of chromite deposits in serpentinized rocks.

For the replacement of X− by H2O in Cr(NH3)5X2+, ΔVo* (the value of the volume of activation ΔV* at zero pressure) at 25.0° in 0.1 m NH4ClO4 is −10.8, −10.2, and − 9.4 cm3 mol−1 respectively for X− = Cl−, Br−, and I−, while ΔV, the molar volume of reaction, is −8.4, −7.2 and −6.0 cm3 mol−1. The pressure-dependence of ΔV* can be expressed in terms of the number x of water-molecules which are electrostricted as the systems go from ground-state to transition-state; for X− = Cl−, Br−, and I−, x = 1.9, 2.0, and 1.7. These data, combined with ΔV* = −5.8 cm3 mol−1 for the aquo-exchange of Cr(NH3)5OH23+, indicate an associative mechanism for these reactions, as does the contrast with ΔV0* data for the formally analogous, but dissociatively-activated, reactions of Co(NH3)5X(3−n)+.

Abstract

We report the charge-changing cross sections (σ cc ) of 24 p-shell nuclides on both hydrogen and carbon at about 900A MeV, of which 8,9 Li, 10-12 Be, 10,14,15 B, 14,15,17-22 N and 16 O on hydrogen and 8,9 Li on carbon are for the first time. Benefiting from the data set, we found a new and robust relationship between the scaling factor of the Glauber model calculations and the separation energies of the nuclei of interest on both targets. This allows us to deduce proton radii (R p ) for the first time from the cross sections on hydrogen. Nearly identical R p values are deduced from both target data for the neutron-rich carbon isotopes; however, the R p from the hydrogen target is systematically smaller in the neutron-rich nitrogen isotopes. Abstract

The root mean square radii of the proton density distribution in ^{16-24}O derived from measurements of charge changing cross sections with a carbon target at ∼900A  MeV together with the matter radii portray thick neutron skin for ^{22-24}O despite ^{22,24}O being doubly magic. Imprints of the shell closures at N=14 and 16 are reflected in local minima of their proton radii that provide evidence for the tensor interaction causing them. The radii agree with ab initio calculations employing the chiral NNLO_{sat} interaction, though skin thickness predictions are challenged. Shell model predictions agree well with the data.

Abstract

Proton radii of ^{12-19}C densities derived from first accurate charge changing cross section measurements at 900A  MeV with a carbon target are reported. A thick neutron surface evolves from ∼0.5  fm in ^{15}C to ∼1  fm in ^{19}C. The halo radius in ^{19}C is found to be 6.4±0.7  fm as large as ^{11}Li. Ab initio calculations based on chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces reproduce the radii well.

Abstract

The first determination of radii of point proton distribution (proton radii) of (12-17)B from charge-changing cross sections (σ(CC)) measurements at the FRS, GSI, Darmstadt is reported. The proton radii are deduced from a finite-range Glauber model analysis of the σ(CC). The radii show an increase from ¹³B to ¹⁷B and are consistent with predictions from the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model for the neutron-rich nuclei. The measurements show the existence of a thick neutron surface with neutron-proton radius difference of 0.51(0.11) fm in ¹⁷B.

Abstract

A measurement of the reduced transition probability for the excitation of the ground state to the first 2+ state in 104Sn has been performed using relativistic Coulomb excitation at GSI. 104Sn is the lightest isotope in the Sn chain for which this quantity has been measured. The result is a key point in the discussion of the evolution of nuclear structure in the proximity of the doubly magic nucleus 100Sn. The value B(E2; 0+ → 2+) = 0.10(4) e2b2 is significantly lower than earlier results for 106Sn and heavier isotopes. The result is well reproduced by shell model predictions and therefore indicates a robust N = Z = 50 shell closure.
