Abstract

The flux of Be-7 and B-8 neutrinos from the Sun and the production of Li-7 via primordial nucleosynthesis depend on the rate of the He-3(alpha,gamma)Be-7 reaction. In an extension of a previous study showing cross section data at 127-167 keV center-of-mass energy, the present work reports on a measurement of the He-3(alpha,gamma)Be-7 cross section at 106 keV performed at Italy's Gran Sasso underground laboratory by the activation method. This energy is closer to the solar Gamow energy than ever reached before. The result is sigma=0.567 +/- 0.029(stat)+/- 0.016(syst) nb. The data are compared with previous activation studies at high energy, and a recommended S(0) value for all He-3(alpha,gamma)Be-7 activation studies, including the present work, is given.

Abstract

The nuclear physics input from the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be cross section is a major uncertainty in the fluxes of 7Be and 8B neutrinos from the Sun predicted by solar models and in the 7Li abundance obtained in big-bang nucleosynthesis calculations. The present work reports on a new precision experiment using the activation technique at energies directly relevant to big-bang nucleosynthesis. Previously such low energies had been reached experimentally only by the prompt-gamma technique and with inferior precision. Using a windowless gas target, high beam intensity, and low background gamma-counting facilities, the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be cross section has been determined at 127, 148, and 169 keV center-of-mass energy with a total uncertainty of 4%. The sources of systematic uncertainty are discussed in detail. The present data can be used in big-bang nucleosynthesis calculations and to constrain the extrapolation of the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be astrophysical S factor to solar energies.

Abstract

A pure 7 Be beam with an energy E = 1–8 MeV is available for nuclear and applied physics at the 3 MV Pelletron tandem accelerator CIRCE in Caserta. The beam is produced using an offline technique. Typical analyzed beam intensities are about 2 ppA, using cathodes with an activity of the order of 200 MBq. The 7 Be implantation has been used for both fundamental nuclear physics and applied physics. In particular, different metals have been implanted with 7 Be in order to study the influence of the chemical composition and of the number of quasi-free electrons of the host material on the 7 Be half-life. In the field of applied physics, the 7 Be implantation turns out to be very interesting for wear measurement. In fact, in this case 7 Be is used as a depth-sensitive tracer. The continuous detection of the sample activity during the wear allows a high sensitivity measurement of wearing speed. The 7 Be beam production at CIRCE, the implantation procedure and the results obtained from the 7 Be half-life measurements and the wear characterization of implanted steel samples are described.

Abstract

(7)Be decays via electron capture and therefore its half-life is expected to depend on the electron density at the nucleus. We measured the (7)Be half-life in palladium, tungsten, zirconium and tantalum metals, in order to investigate the influence of the quasi-free electrons in metals on the probability of electron capture. The (7)Be samples were obtained implanting a 4.85 MeV pure radioactive (7)Be ion beam. The (7)Be half-life was determined measuring the 478 keV gamma decay following the electron capture by means of HPGe detectors. In order to reduce systematic errors, we planned to perform independent measurements in three different laboratories: Naples (Italy), Bochum (Germany) and Debrecen (Hungary). On the basis of the first results, we do not find a (7)Be half-life change within the experimental errors of 0.4%. RI Fulop, Zsolt/B-2262-2008

Abstract

The transition between the Main Sequence and the Red Giant Branch in low mass stars is powered by the onset of the CNO burning, whose bottleneck is the $^{14}$N(p,$\gamma)^{15}$O. The LUNA collaboration has recently improved the low energy measurements of the cross section of this key reaction. We analyse the impact of the revised reaction rate on the estimate of the Globular Clusters ages, as derived from the turnoff luminosity. We found that the age of the oldest Globulars should be increased by about 0.7-1 Gyr with respect to the current estimates.

Abstract

For the study of astrophysically relevant capture reactions in the underground laboratory LUNA a newsetup of high sensitivity has been implemented. The setup includes a windowless gas target, a 4p BGO summing crystal, and beam calorimeters. The setup has been recently used to measure the d(p,g) 3 He cross-section for the first time within its solar Gamowpeak, i.e. dow n to 2.5 keV c.m. energy. Abstract

The El amplitude of the transition to the ground state in the C-12(alpha, gamma)O-16 capture reaction was measured in the energy range E-cm=1.3 to 3.0 MeV using an intense C-12 beam in combination with a windowless He-4 gas target and an array of six 70% HPGe detectors. The detectors were placed in a ring-shaped geometry around the target at a distance of 17 cm on a plane perpendicular to the beam axis. A target length of 5.3 cm was defined by a 12.5 cm thick lead shielding. Passive and active shielding was used to achieve the necessary suppression of the beam induced and cosmic background. The results of this measurement and their extrapolation to the relevant energy during the helium burning phase in massive stars are reported.

Abstract

The absolute cross section sigma(E) of the radiative capture reaction p(Be-7,gamma)B-8 at the center-of mass energy E = 992 keV has been measured using a radioactive 7Be ion beam and a windowless gas target system filled with H-2 gas. The B-8 residual nuclides were detected with a recoil separator consisting of momentum and velocity filters and a BE E detector telescope. The B-8 yield was observed concurrently with the Be-7+p elastic scattering yield, relating sigma(E) to the Rutherford scattering cross section. The resulting value, sigma(E) = 0.41+/-0.11 mu b, leads to an S(E) factor at zero energy of S(0) = 16+/-4 eV b, in fair agreement with recommended values.

Abstract

The rate of the hydrogen-burning carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle is controlled by the slowest process, 14N(p,gamma)15O, which proceeds by capture to the ground and several excited states in 15O. Previous extrapolations for the ground state contribution disagreed by a factor 2, corresponding to 15% uncertainty in the total astrophysical S-factor. At the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) 400 kV accelerator placed deep underground in the Gran Sasso facility in Italy, a new experiment on ground state capture has been carried out at 317.8, 334.4, and 353.3 keV center-of-mass energy. Systematic corrections have been reduced considerably with respect to previous studies by using a Clover detector and by adopting a relative analysis. Abstract

The COMPTEL instrument performed the first mapping of the 1.809 MeV photons in the Galaxy, triggering considerable interest in determing the sources of interstellar 26Al. The predicted 26Al is too low compared to the observation, for a better understanding more accurate rates for the 25Mg(p,gamma)26Al reaction are required. The 25Mg(p,gamma)26Al reaction has been investigated at the resonances at Er= 745; 418; 374; 304 keV at Ruhr-Universität Bochum using a Tandem accelerator and a 4pi NaI detector. In addition the resonance at Er = 189 keV has been measured deep underground laboratory at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, exploiting the strong suppression of cosmic background. This low resonance has been studied with the 400 kV LUNA accelerator and a HPGe detector. The preliminary results of the resonance strengths will be reported.

Abstract

Recently, the LUNA collaboration has carried out a high precision measurement on the 3He(alpha,gamma)7Be reaction cross section with both activation and on-line gamma-detection methods at unprecedented low energies. In this paper the results obtained with the activation method are summarized. Abstract

In stars, four hydrogen nuclei are converted into a helium nucleus in two competing nuclear fusion processes, namely the proton-proton chain (p-p chain) and the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle. For temperatures above 20 million kelvin, the CNO cycle dominates energy production, and its rate is determined by the slowest process, the 14N(p,γ)15O radiative capture reaction. This reaction proceeds through direct and resonant capture into the ground state and several excited states in 15O. High energy data for capture into each of these states can be extrapolated to stellar energies using an R-matrix fit. The results from several recent extrapolation studies are discussed. A new experiment at the LUNA (Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics) 400kV accelerator in Italy's Gran Sasso laboratory measures the total cross section of the 14N(p,γ)15O reaction with a windowless gas target and a 4π BGO summing detector, down to center of mass energies as low as 70keV. After reviewing the characteristics of the LUNA facility, the main features of this experiment are discussed, as well as astrophysical scenarios where cross section data in the energy range covered have a direct impact, without any extrapolation.

Abstract

A systematic study of α -beam heating effect on a windowless gas target through Rutherford scattering is described. For such measurements, an ion implanted commercial silicon detector to reveal 100–250 keV alphas is used coupled with a low-noise home-made preamplifier. The results on density reduction of the gas in the target due to beam heating are discussed and their importance for high precision cross section measurements at very low energies are underlined.

Abstract

Radioactive ion implantation allows non‐contacting, online wear measurements with sub micrometric sensitivity to be performed, by monitoring the removed and/or residual activity on parts subject to wear. Comparative studies of different materials, including those who exhibit a low resistance to radiation damage, can be easily performed by means of this technique. A project has started at the TTT3 tandem of the University “Federico II” in Naples, Italy, in order to exploit such technique using a 7Be ion beam, that was developed to study the astrophysical important reaction 7Be(p,γ)8B. The 7Be ion beam is produced using a ion sputter source and accelerated to an energy up to 8.0 MeV. A novel setup allows control of the implanted ion depth distribution, and is a crucial point for the application of this technique. The 7Be ion beam production and implantation procedures are discussed. Finally, the results of some test measurements are presented.

Abstract

A 7Be ion beam of several particle pA at 8 MeV has been produced at the TTT3 tandem of the University "Federico II" in Naples. The 7Be nuclides were formed via the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction using a metallic Li target and an 11.4 MeV proton beam of 20 μA intensity, delivered by the cyclotron in Debrecen. Methods of hot chemistry were used to extract the 7Be nuclides from the Li matrix and to prepare the 7Be cathodes for the ion sputter source of the tandem. Abstract

A new direct measurement of the absolute cross section of the 1H(7Be,γ)8B reaction has been performed in inverse kinematics at Ecm = 990 keV. A radioactive 7Be beam (Elab, = 8 MeV) and a windowless H2 gas target were used; 8B recoils were identified and counted by a recoil mass separator. The reaction cross section was derived by normalization to the elastic scattering cross section, measured in a separate run. The resulting value σr = 0.40 ± 0.12 μb yielded an astrophysical S-factor at zero energy So = 15.3 ± 4.5 eV b, in fair agreement with recommended values. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The cross section of the reactions 3He(d, p) 4 He and d(3He, p)4He has been measured at the center-of-mass energies E=5 to 60 keV and 10 to 40 keV, respectively. The experiments were performed to determine the magnitude of the electron screening effect leading to the respective electron-screening potential energy U e =219±7 and 109±9 eV, which are both significantly higher than the respective values from atomic physics models, U e =120 and 65 eV.

Abstract

The energy loss of deuterons in 3He gas was measured at E d = 15 to 100 keV using the 3He pressure dependence of the 3He(d,p)4He cross-section at a given incident energy. At the highest energies, the observed energy loss is in good agreement with a standard compilation. However, with decreasing energy the experimental values drop steadily below the theoretical values and near E d = 18 keV they drop sharply (within 1 keV) reaching the domain of nuclear stopping power. This threshold behavior is due to the minimum 1s → 2s electron excitation of the He target atoms, i.e. it is a quantum effect. Some consequences are discussed.
