The first edition of the SUNRISE (Seashore and UNderwater documentation of aRchaeological herItage palimpSests and Environment) summer school was carried out in Marina di Ragusa in Sicily (Italy) from 3rd to 9th September 2022. It was jointly organized by Politecnico di Torino, IUAV, University of Sassari, FBK, University of Udine and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia with the support of SIFET, ISPRS Student Consortium, private companies (Images, Microgeo, Stonex, Leica and Geomax) and the municipality of Santa Croce Camerina.The five days of summer school were attended by 20 students from Europe, Asia and USA. After the first day of lectures focused on the theoretical basis of surveying, photogrammetry, LiDAR, and SLAM, the field activities took place in a submerged and terrestrial scenario. The underwater surveying involved a submerged amphora, and the terrestrial activity was focused on the Arab bath of Mezzagnone, a 6th-century AD building that has been fully preserved until today. The paper deal with this experience and underline the followed approach. Finally some results achieved by the students are reported.

Quantitative studies on population dynamics and life history traits of key species are useful to predict changes in the structure and organization of biological communities. In this context, Hermodice carunculata (Pallas, 1766) is a selective scavenger/carnivore polychaete species (known as a fireworm) that, in recent years, has exhibited a northern expansion along the whole basin, including the Italian coasts, and an increasing abundance in its southern areas. Here we report ecological data and fireworm abundances from two shallow stations of the Salento peninsula in the Ionian Sea (Lecce, Italy), characterized by different hydrodynamic exposure levels and structural communities. The observed densities by visual census in the years 2019–2021 (up to 18 ind./15 m2) document a striking shift compared to the past anecdotal reports of the rare occurrence of fireworms along the studied area. Additionally, their abundance seems to be driven by the substrate coverage; in fact, a higher density of fireworms was observed where the biodiversity is richer. Results from this study will serve as a baseline reference for future investigation of the invasiveness potential of a species that can act as a biological marker of ocean warming.

The Mediterranean Sea is a hot spot for marine biodiversity, and this is particularly evident taking into consideration the diversity observed in many animal groups, among them the Molluscs. In the last decade, several works have revealed a high rate of cryptic diversity characterizing the Molluscan fauna of the Mediterranean Sea and an increasing number of endemic and/or new species inhabiting this semi-enclosed basin have been recorded or described. The DNA-barcoding method is considered an essential step in the integrative taxonomy applications, to unravel cryptic diversity and for species identification. Here we report the case of DNA-barcoding technique applied to identify a nudibranch (Heterobranchia) collected from the Adriatic Sea, in the Bay of Kotor (Montenegro), for which a standard morphological identification was not possible. Mediterranean specimen belonging to Pruvotfolia pselliotes (Labbé, 1923) is for the first time molecularly identified and its COI DNA sequence compared with the one of an individual collected from the type locality. In addition, this is the first verified report of this species from the Adriatic Sea. Finally, the potential of using DNA-barcoding is here discussed, together with the habitat and the geographical distribution of this uncommon species.

The growing interest in recent years in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) by the scientific community, software developers, and geomatics professionals, has led these systems to be used more and more widely, in different fields of engineering and architecture. This is thanks, above all, to their flexibility of use and low cost compared to traditional photogrammetric flights using expensive metric digital cameras or LiDAR sensors. In recent years, UAVs have also been used in the field of monitoring and inspection of public or private buildings that are remarkable in terms of size and architecture. This is mainly due to the focus a sustainability and resource efficiency in the building and infrastructure sector, which aims to extend their lifetimes. Through the use of remote checking using UAVs, the monitoring and inspection of buildings can be brought to a new level of quality and saving. This paper focuses on the processing and study of 3D models obtained from images captured by an UAV. In particular, the authors wanted to study the accuracy gains achieved in the building 3D model obtained with both nadir and oblique UAV flights. The images from the flights were processed using Structure-for Motion-based approach for point cloud generation using dense image-matching algorithms implemented in an open source software. We used the open source software VisualSfM, developed by Chanchang Wu in collaboration with the University of Washington and Google. The dense matching plug-in integrated in its interface, PMVS/CMVS, made by Yasutaka Furukawa, was employed to generate the dense cloud. The achieved results were compare with those gained by Photoscan software by Agisoft and with 3D model from the Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) survey.

Members of the globally distributed bivalve family Ostreidae (oysters) have a significant role in marine ecosystems and include species of high economic importance. In this work, we report the occurrence of digenean parasites of the families Bucephalidae (Prosorhynchoides sp.) and Monorchiidae (Postmonorchis sp.) in Mediterranean native populations of Ostrea edulis (but not in the introduced Magallana gigas). Molecular detection was based on DNA sequencing of the ribosomal intergenic spacer 2 (ITS2) marker. The importance of detecting the presence of overlooked digenean parasites in Mediterranean oysters is discussed.

In Italy, the measles elimination target has not yet been reached despite a significant reduction in cases. A multicenter study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of anti-measles (MV) IgG antibodies in the Italian population by age, sex and geographical area. To determine the level of MV-specific antibodies in sera, the immunoenzymatic assay ELISA was used (Enzygnost Anti-VZV/IgG, Siemens Healthcare Diagnostic Products GmbH, Germany). Overall, 3746 serum samples collected in the years 2019-20 from healthy subjects aged 6-64 years residing in 13 Italian regions. The overall seroprevalence of anti-MV IgG was 91.2 % (90.6 % male, 91.7 % female). Significantly higher seroprevalence values (p < 0.05) were recorded for the extreme age groups of the study population (6-9 years: 94.2 %; 40-64 years: 97.6 %). Subjects 20-39 and 40-64 years old had significantly higher antibody titers suggesting a protection against measles mainly derived from natural infection. Seroprevalence was significantly higher in the South (93.2 %) than in the Northern-Central Italy (88.9 %). The results indicate an increase in the overall seroprevalence data compared to previous investigations. Purpose: In this multicenter collaboration, we report real-world data in the largest published series of long-term outcomes for patients with relapsed/refractory (r/r) Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) treated with peritransplant radiation therapy (pt-RT) and high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT)., Methods and Materials: We conducted a retrospective analysis including data from 12 institutions. Eligibility required histologic diagnosis of HL, receipt of ASCT plus pt-RT between 2004 and 2014 for r/r HL, and age ≥18 years at the time of ASCT. All patients received salvage chemotherapy for maximum debulking before ASCT. Metabolic responses were scored according to the Lugano Classification. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards were calculated to estimate the effect of covariates on patients' outcome., Results: One hundred thirty-one patients were eligible: 68 were male (52%), and median age at ASCT was 32 years (range, 18-70). At the time of diagnosis with r/r HL, 92 patients (70%) had limited (stage I-II) disease, and 10 patients (8%) had bulky disease. Pt-RT was given pre-ASCT in 32 patients (24%) and post-ASCT in 99 (76%); median prescribed dose was 30.6 Gy (range, 20-44 Gy). With median follow-up of 60 months, 3- and 5-year OS were 84% and 77%, while 3- and 5-year progression-free survival were 75% and 72%, respectively. On univariate and multivariate analysis, advanced stage at relapse (hazard ratio [HR], 2.18; P = .04), irradiation of >3 sites (HR, 3.69; P = .01), and incomplete metabolic response after salvage chemotherapy (HR, 2.24; P = .01) had a negative effect on OS. The sequencing of pt-RT (pre- vs post-ASCT) did not affect outcomes., Conclusions: Overall, the addition of pt-RT to ASCT for patients with r/r HL is associated with very good outcomes. Limited relapsed disease with ≤3 sites involved and achievement of complete metabolic response after salvage chemotherapy were predictive of more favorable prognosis., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. Objectives: The objective was to estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in autumn 2019 (before case zero was identified in Italy) and 2021 among residual sera samples from health care users in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy., Methods: Two serosurveys were conducted. Using a semiquantitative method, samples were tested for the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against the S1 domain of the spike protein. Samples with positive test results from the 2019 survey were independently retested using a multiplex panel to detect IgG antibodies against the receptor binding domain, S1 and S2 domains, and nucleocapsid. Samples with positive test results from the 2021 survey underwent repeat testing with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect anti-nucleocapsid IgG antibodies. Prevalence rates according to gender and age groups, together with their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were calculated., Results: Overall, the proportion of samples with positive test results was 2/353 in 2019 and 22/363 in 2021, with an estimated seroprevalence of 0.27% (95% CI 0-1.86) and 6.21% (95% CI 3.9-9.31) in 2019 and 2021 respectively., Conclusion: Results of this study support the hypothesis that the virus was circulating in Italy as early as autumn 2019. Understanding the impacts of microplastics on living organisms in aquatic habitats is one of the hottest research topics worldwide. Despite increased attention, investigating microplastics in underwater environments remains a problematic task, due to the ubiquitous occurrence of microplastic, its multiple modes of interactions with the biota, and to the diversity of the synthetic organic polymers composing microplastics in the field. Several studies on microplastics focused on marine invertebrates, but to date, the benthic sea slugs (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Heterobranchia) were not yet investigated. Sea slugs are known to live on the organisms on which they feed on or to snack while gliding over the sea floor, but also as users of exogenous molecules or materials not only for nutrition. Therefore, they may represent a potential biological model to explore new modes of transformation and/or management of plastic, so far considered to be a non-biodegradable polymer. In this study we analysed the stomachal content of Bursatella leachii, an aplysiid heterobranch living in the Mar Piccolo, a highly polluted coastal basin near Taranto, in the northern part of the Ionian Sea. Microplastics were found in the stomachs of all the six sampled specimens, and SEM/EDX analyses were carried out to characterize the plastic debris. The SEM images and EDX spectra gathered here should be regarded as a baseline reference database for future investigations on marine Heterobranchia and their interactions with microplastics., (© 2022. The genus Nemesis Furfaro & Mariottini, 2021, was recently introduced for an independent lineage of aeolid nudibranchs, and Dondice banyulensis Portmann & Sandmeier, 1960, established as its type species. Anyway, the presence of a senior homonym, Nemesis Risso, 1826, was evidently missed. In fact, in 1826, Risso established this genus for a group of Copepoda (Arthropoda, Crustacea) and according to the Principle of Priority (ICZN) only the senior homonym may be used as a valid name. Therefore, a new replacement name is here proposed. Furthermore, the genus name Nanuca Er. Marcus, 1957, has priority over Dondice Er. Marcus, 1958 and consequently, the species in this clade should be classified under Nanuca , mostly as new combinations.

Integrative taxonomy is an evolving field of multidisciplinary studies often utilised to elucidate phylogenetic reconstructions that were poorly understood in the past. The systematics of many taxa have been resolved by combining data from different research approaches, i.e., molecular, ecological, behavioural, morphological and chemical. Regarding molecular analysis, there is currently a search for new genetic markers that could be diagnostic at different taxonomic levels and that can be added to the canonical ones. In marine Heterobranchia, the most widely used mitochondrial markers, COI and 16S, are usually analysed by comparing the primary sequence. The 16S rRNA molecule can be folded into a 2D secondary structure that has been poorly exploited in the past study of heterobranchs, despite 2D molecular analyses being sources of possible diagnostic characters. Comparison of the results from the phylogenetic analyses of a concatenated (the nuclear H3 and the mitochondrial COI and 16S markers) dataset (including 30 species belonging to eight accepted genera) and from the 2D folding structure analyses of the 16S rRNA from the type species of the genera investigated demonstrated the diagnostic power of this RNA molecule to reveal the systematics of four genera belonging to the family Myrrhinidae (Gastropoda, Heterobranchia). The "molecular morphological" approach to the 16S rRNA revealed to be a powerful tool to delimit at both species and genus taxonomic levels and to be a useful way of recovering information that is usually lost in phylogenetic analyses. While the validity of the genera Godiva , Hermissenda and Phyllodesmium are confirmed, a new genus is necessary and introduced for Dondice banyulensis , Nemesis gen. nov. and the monospecific genus Nanuca is here synonymised with Dondice , with Nanuca sebastiani transferred into Dondice as Dondice sebastiani comb. nov.

The diversity of Mediterranean nudibranchs has yet to be thoroughly studied: new species are constantly described, and molecular approaches have revealed some cryptic species. A new facelinid species has been discovered based on specimens collected from the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea). Integrative results of molecular analyses and of anatomical investigations support the description of Dondice trainitoi sp. nov. The characteristic chromatic body pattern and the black epithelium covering the masticatory jaws allow an unambiguous identification of the new taxon. Preliminary phylogenetic analyses based on multi-locus molecular markers (nuclear H3 gene and mitochondrial markers 16S rDNA and COI) surprisingly revealed paraphyly of the genus Dondice and the need of further studies including more taxa assigned to the currently accepted family Facelinidae. Furthermore, following an integrative taxonomy approach, considerations on the ecological behaviour characterizing most of the species involved in this study provide useful insights for understanding the evolutionary history of this facelinid group.

'Cryptic' species are an emerging biological problem that is broadly discussed in the present study. Recently, a cryptic species definition was suggested for those species which manifest low morphological, but considerable genetic, disparity. As a case study we present unique material from a charismatic group of nudibranch molluscs of the genus Trinchesia from European waters to reveal three new species and demonstrate that they show a dual nature: on one hand, they can be considered a 'cryptic' species complex due to their overall similarity, but on the other hand, stable morphological differences as well as molecular differences are demonstrated for every species in that complex. Thus, this species complex can equally be named 'cryptic', 'pseudocryptic' or 'non-cryptic'. We also present evidence for an extremely rapid speciation rate in this species complex and link the species problem with epigenetics. Available metazoan-wide data, which are broadly discussed in the present study, show the unsuitability of a 'cryptic' species concept because the degree of crypticity represents a continuum when a finer multilevel morphological and molecular scale is applied to uncover more narrowly defined species making the 'cryptic' addition to 'species' redundant. Morphological and molecular methods should be applied in concordance to form a fine-scale multilevel taxonomic framework, and not necessarily implying only an a posteriori transformation of exclusively molecular-based 'cryptic' species into morphologically-defined 'pseudocryptic' ones. Implications of the present study have importance for many fields, including conservation biology and fine-scale biodiversity assessments.

Background: To evaluate clinical outcomes of simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) - intensity modulated radiotherapy (RT) in patients with non metastatic anal cancer compared to those of a set of patients treated with 3-dimensional conformal RT and sequential boost (SeqB)., Methods: A retrospective cohort of 190 anal cancer patients treated at 3 academic centers with concurrent chemo-RT employing either SIB or SeqB was analysed. The SIB-group consisted of 87 patients, treated with 2 cycles of Mitomycin (MMC) and 5-Fluorouracil (5FU) using SIB-IMRT delivering 42-45Gy/28-30 fractions to the elective pelvic lymph nodes and 50.4-54Gy/28-30fractions to the primary tumor and involved nodes, based on pre-treatment staging. The SeqB group comprised 103 patients, treated with MMC associated to either 5FU or Capecitabine concurrent to RT with 36 Gy/20 fractions to a single volume including gross tumor, clinical nodes and elective nodal volumes and a SeqB to primary tumor and involved nodes of 23.4 Gy/13 fractions. We compared colostomy-free survival (CFS), overall survival (OS) and the cumulative incidence of colostomy for each radiation modality. Cox proportional-hazards model addressed factors influencing OS and CFS., Results: Median follow up was 34 (range 9-102) and 31 months (range 2-101) in the SIB and SeqB groups. The 1- and 2-year cumulative incidences of colostomy were 8.2% (95%CI:3.6-15.2) and 15.0% (95%CI:8.1-23.9) in the SIB group and 13.9% (95%CI: 7.8-21.8) and 18.1% (95%CI:10.8-27.0) in the SeqB group. Two-year CFS and OS were 78.1% (95%CI:67.0-85.8) and 87.5% (95%CI:77.3-93.3) in the SIB group and 73.5% (95%CI:62.6-81.7) and 85.4% (95%CI:75.5-91.6) in the SeqB, respectively. A Cox proportional hazards regression model highlighted an adjusted hazard ratio (AdjHR) of 1.18 (95%CI: 0.67-2.09;p = 0.560), although AdjHR for the first 24 months was 0.95 (95%CI: 0.49-1.84;p = 0.877) for the SIB approach., Conclusions: SIB-based RT provides similar clinical outcomes compared to SeqB-based in the treatment of patients affected with non metastatic anal cancer.

Aim: To report on clinical outcomes of simultaneous integrated boost intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and concurrent chemotherapy as per Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) 0529 protocol in anal cancer patients., Methods: Clinical stage T1-T4 N0-N3 anal cancer patients were submitted to concomitant chemoradiation. Patients with cT2N0 disease were prescribed 50.4 Gy/28 fractions to the gross tumor planning target volume (PTV) and 42 Gy/28 fractions to the elective nodal PTV. Patients staged as cT3-T4/N0-N3 were given 54 Gy/30 fractions to the macroscopic anal PTV, while clinical nodes were prescribed 50.4 Gy/30 fractions if <3 cm or 54 Gy/30 fractions if ≥3 cm; elective nodal PTV was prescribed 45 Gy/30 fractions. Two cycles of concomitant 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin C were planned for all patients. Oncological outcomes, acute and late toxicity profiles and pattern of failure were reported., Results: The 3-year colostomy-free survival rate was 64% (95% CI 0.52-0.75). The 3-year local control, disease-free and overall survival rates were 69% (95% CI 0.57-0.79), 71% (95% CI 0.59-0.80) and 79% (95% CI 0.66-0.87), respectively. The cumulative incidence of colostomies was 15.1% (95% CI 8.15-23.88) at 24 months. The cumulative incidence of cancer-specific deaths was 16.4% (95% CI 8.60-26.47) at 36 months. Major acute toxicity consisted of hematological (G3-G4: 26%) and cutaneous (G3-G4: 16%) events. Only one case of ≥G3 late toxicity was documented., Conclusions: Simultaneous integrated boost IMRT and concurrent chemotherapy as per RTOG 0529 protocol seems to be safe and feasible with consistent oncological outcomes and a mild acute and late toxicity profile in anal cancer patients., (© 2017 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

Recent molecular studies revealed high level of endemism and numerous cryptic species within opisthobranchs, with Mediterranean taxa clearly understudied. Here we used genetic data from both mitochondrial and nuclear gene fragments as well as morphological data from taxonomically relevant characters to investigate the phylogenetic relationships and systematics of Mediterranean taxa of the Flabellinidae and Piseinotecidae families. Phylogenetic analyses based on Bayesian and Maximum-Likelihood methods indicate that Flabellinidae and Pisenotecidae taxa and species within the genera Flabellina, Calmella and Piseinotecus do not form monophyletic clades. These results are supported by our morphological analyses which allowed the re-evaluation of the triseriate radula condition in Pisenotecidae and Calmella taxa and their inclusion in the genus Flabellina as Flabellina gaditanacomb. nov. (synonym of F. confusa), Flabellina gabiniereicomb. nov. and Flabellina cavolinicomb. nov. Species delimitation and barcoding gap analyses allowed uncovering cryptic species within Flabellina gracilis (Alder and Hancock, 1844), F. trophina (Bergh, 1890), F. verrucosa (M. Sars, 1829) and F. ischitana Hirano and Thompson, 1990, the latter with an Atlantic form which is under description. Purpose: To report data of samples collected from January 2000 to August 2013, in the Department of Diagnosis and Laboratory Analysis, Ophthalmic Hospital, Turin, Italy, from different types of ocular infections and their antibiotic susceptibility., Methods: Collected samples were cultured using both liquid and solid media. Then bacterial isolates were tested for antibiotic susceptibility using the Kirby-Bauer diffusion method and the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) serum standards., Results: Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacteria isolated in ocular samples., Conclusions: In vitro susceptibility tests showed that levofloxacin and moxifloxacin (introduced only in 2010) had the highest efficacy against bacterial isolates.

The nudibranch Diaphorodoris luteocincta (M. Sars, 1870) shows two colour morphotypes defined as D. luteocincta var. alba and D. luteocincta var. reticulata, which are easy to identify and which share an overlapping distribution in the Mediterranean Sea and the North-Eastern Atlantic Ocean. Their systematics has long been discussed by several authors until recently when a molecular study proposed the two varieties as intraspecific colour variability occurring within D. luteocincta species. In order to solve their ranking status, we have carried out a morphological study on anatomical characters and molecular analyses on the mitochondrial markers (COI and 16S rDNA) and the nuclear H3 gene. Results proved the usefulness of the integrative taxonomy approach in assessing species delimitation; in fact Diaphorodoris alba stat. nov. and D. luteocincta were revealed to be two different species. D. luteocincta var. reticulata is confirmed as synonym of D. luteocincta s.str. A hypothesis on phylogenetic relationship among most of the currently recognised species of the genus Diaphorodoris Iredale & O'Donoghue, 1923 is also here presented.

The state of knowledge of the alien marine Mollusca in Italy is reviewed and updated. Littorina saxatilis (Olivi, 1792), Polycera hedgpethi Er. Marcus, 1964 and Haminoea japonica Pilsbry, 1895are here considered as established on the basis of published and unpublished data, and recent records of the latter considerably expand its known Mediterranean range to the Tyrrhenian Sea. COI sequences obtained indicate that a comprehensive survey of additional European localities is needed to elucidate the dispersal pathways of Haminoea japonica.Recent records and interpretation of several molluscan taxa as alien are discussed both in light of new Mediterranean (published and unpublished) records and of four categories previously excluded from alien species lists. Within this framework, ten taxa are no longer considered as alien species, or their records from Italy are refuted. Furthermore, Trochocochlea castriotae Bellini, 1903 is considered a new synonym for Gibbula albida (Gmelin, 1791). Data provided here leave unchanged as 35 the number of alien molluscan taxa recorded from Italy as well as the percentage of the most plausible vectors of introduction, but raise to 22 the number of established species along the Italian shores during the 2005-2010 period, and backdate to 1792 the first introduction of an alien molluscan species (Littorina saxatilis) to the Italian shores.
