1. Sequential host-bacteria and bacteria-bacteria interactions determine the microbiome establishment of Nematostella vectensis

Abstract

Abstract Background The microbiota of multicellular organisms undergoes considerable changes during host ontogeny but the general mechanisms that control community assembly and succession are poorly understood. Here, we use bacterial recolonization experiments in Nematostella vectensis as a model to understand general mechanisms determining bacterial establishment and succession. We compared the dynamic establishment of the microbiome on the germfree host and on inert silicone tubes. Results Following the dynamic reconstruction of microbial communities on both substrates, we show that the initial colonization events are strongly influenced by the host but not by the silicone tube, while the subsequent bacteria-bacteria interactions are the main driver of bacterial succession. Interestingly, the recolonization pattern on adult hosts resembles the ontogenetic colonization succession. This process occurs independently of the bacterial composition of the inoculum and can be followed at the level of individual bacteria. To identify potential metabolic traits associated with initial colonization success and potential metabolic interactions among bacteria associated with bacterial succession, we reconstructed the metabolic networks of bacterial colonizers based on their genomes. These analyses revealed that bacterial metabolic capabilities reflect the recolonization pattern, and the degradation of chitin might be a selection factor during early recolonization of the animal. Concurrently, transcriptomic analyses revealed that Nematostella possesses two chitin synthase genes, one of which is upregulated during early recolonization. Conclusions Our results show that early recolonization events are strongly controlled by the host while subsequent colonization depends on metabolic bacteria-bacteria interactions largely independent of host ontogeny. Abstract

Se ha estudiado la lixiviación de concentrados de cobre mediante cloro-complejos cúpricos, generados in situ por la reacción entre el Cu(II) procedente del cobre soluble del concentrado y cloruro de sodio en medio ácido. Se utilizaron concentrados de cobre provenientes de faenas mineras de Antofagasta, Chile. Se ha efectuado una caracterización química y mineralógica de los concentrados originales. Se ha estudiado el efecto de las siguientes variables, durante la lixiviación: concentración de cloruro, concentración de cobre soluble, tiempo de lixiviación, porcentaje de sólidos y temperatura. Se han caracterizado los residuos sólidos por DRX y microscopia electrónica. Los resultados experimentales indican que es posible obtener disoluciones con contenidos de cobre entre 15 y 35 g/l y de 2 a 5 g/l de acidez libre, con características adecuadas para entrar a la etapa de extracción por solventes. El procedimiento utiliza, solo, reactivos comunes y de muy bajo costo, como NaCl y ácido sulfúrico diluido. La ventaja de este procedimiento consiste en recuperar, a muy bajo coste, la totalidad del cobre soluble y entre 10 y 15% del cobre de sulfuros. El residuo final podría pasar a la pirometalurgia convencional

Abstract

Se ha estudiado la lixiviación de concentrados de cobre con alto contenido de arsénico (hasta 2,5 %), mediante un proceso de oxidación con cloro formado "in situ", por la reacción entre hipoclorito de sodio y ácido sulfúrico. El objetivo de estas experiencias es producir una solución de lixiviación, de características adecuadas para entrar a la etapa posterior de extracción por solventes (SX), es decir, entre 4 a 6 g/1 de cobre y 5 a 7 g/1 de ácido residual. Esta disolución, además, deberá contener cantidades mínimas de arsénico y cloruro. Las lixiviaciones se realizaron por agitación en un reactor de acrílico diseñado para tal efecto, a temperatura ambiente y a presión atmosférica. Se utilizaron concentrados de cobre de explotaciones mineras de Antofagasta (Chile). Se estudiaron algunas variables típicas de la lixiviación, como son: la concentración de agente lixiviante, el tiempo de lixiviación, el porcentaje de sólidos y la temperatura. La caracterización de algunos residuos sólidos, producto de las lixiviaciones, se realizó por DRX (Difracción de Rayos X) y EDS (Barrido de Energía Dispersiva de Rayos X). El cobre y arsénico en las disoluciones se analizaron mediante Espectroscopia de Absorción Atómica. Los resultados experimentales indican que es posible obtener soluciones de las características deseadas con este procedimiento, que utiliza reactivos comunes y de relativo bajo costo.

Abstract

The stated goal in this study was to evaluate the behavior in dairy goats Saanen and Alpine during the Fall-Winter, as well as the influence of the number of labor in production and milk quality, low semi feedlot conditions. The research was conducted in two phases, the first was held at the ranch "Las Cabrillas", located in the community of San Juan Chilateca, Oaxaca. The second phase was the chemical analysis was performed in the laboratory of dairy , Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICAP ), belonging to the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH ). The variables were: milk production and milk quality: the results obtained with the Milkscam were: Fat (% ), non-fat solids (%) Density (kg/m3), Protein (%) Lactose (%) Total Solids (%), and pH. Statistical analysis was an experimental design factors using the SAS statistical package The System 9. Females Alpine phenotype obtained the highest parameters of the second to fifth birth delivery, with a best result of third birth as production (2,490 kg) , lactose (5.07 %) and density (1030.732 kg/m3 ). Phenotype Saanen females obtained the highest parameters in the fourth. Higher Fall parameters were obtained , where most of the flock is drying and therefore production and elements decreases as fat (4045 %) , protein (2.777 %) , total solids (0.706 % ) and solids increases no fatty (7.381 %).

Abstract

Copolímeros de poli ( acrilamida-ácido metacrílico) se sintetizaron mediante copolimerización radicálica en solución acuosa a 60 ºC utilizando per­sulfato de potasio (K2S20s) como iniciador. El comportamiento de hincha­miento de los copolímeros preparados con 95, 90, 88 y 84 mol% de ácido meta­crílico en agua a diferentes temperaturas (25, 37 y 45 ºC) fue seguido gravimé­tricamente. Para los "estadios iniciales" del proceso de hinchamiento ( (M,/Mmáx) < 0.5) se calculó el exponente difusional de los copolímeros y los valores obte­nidos indican que el proceso de difusión es no Fickiano. En los "estadios supe­riores" (después de los 90 min) del proceso de hinchamiento se encontró que dicho proceso se ajusta al modelo propuesto por Schott (segundo orden).

Abstract

Copolymers of furfuryl acrylate (A) with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (H) were prepared by free radical copolymerization in DMF solution at 50°C, using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The reactivity ratios of both monomers were calculated according to the general copolymerization equation using the Fineman-Röss and Kelen-Tüdos 1inearization methods, as well as the Tidwell-Mortimer non linear least-squares treatment and the Monte Carlo random method. The reactivity ratios obtained were rA = 0.93 and rH = 1.42. Similar results were obtained by both, the Monte Carlo and the non-linear least squares methods. The microstructure of copolymer chains based on the first order Markov statistics is described.

Abstract

Introduction Outcomes after the introduction of surgical innovations can be impaired by learning periods. The aim of this study is to compare the short-term outcomes of a recently implemented RATS approach to a standard VATS program for anatomical lung resections. Methods Retrospective review of consecutive patients undergoing pulmonary anatomical resection through a minimally invasive approach since RATS approach was applied in our department (June 01, 2018, to November 30, 2019). Propensity score matching was performed according to patients’ age, gender, ppoFEV1, cardiac comorbidity, type of malignancy, and type of resection. Outcome evaluation includes: overall morbidity, significant complications (cardiac arrhythmia, pneumonia, prolonged air leak, and reoperation), 30-day mortality, and length of hospital stay. Data were compared by two-sided chi-square or Fisher's exact test for categorical and Mann–Whitney U test for continuous variables. Results A total of 273 patients (206 VATS, 67 RATS) were included in the study. After propensity score matching, data of 132 patients were analyzed. The thirty-days mortality was nil. Overall morbidity (RATS: 22.4%, VATS: 29.2%; p = 0.369), major complications (RATS: 9% vs VATS: 9.2%; p = 0.956) and the rates of specific major complications (cardiac arrhythmia RATS: 4.5%, VATS: 4.6%, p = 1; pneumonia RATS:0%, VATS:4.6%, p = 0.117; prolonged air leak RATS: 7.5%; VATS: 4.6%, p = 0.718) and reoperation (RATS: 3%, VATS: 1.5%, p = 1) were comparable between both groups. The median length of stay was 3 days in both groups (p = 0.101). Conclusions A RATS program for anatomical lung resection can be implemented safely by experienced VATS surgeons without increasing morbidity rates.

Abstract

To analyze the predictors of pCR in NSCLC patients who underwent anatomical lung resection after induction therapy and to evaluate the postoperative results of these patients.All patients prospectively registered in the database of the GE-VATS working group undergone anatomic lung resection by NSCLC after induction treatment and recruited between 12/20/2016 and 3/20/2018 were included in the study. The population was divided into two groups: patients who obtained a complete pathological response after induction (pCR) and patients who did not obtain a complete pathological response after induction (non-pCR). A multivariate analysis was performed using a binary logistic regression to determine the predictors of pCR and the postoperative results of patients were analyzed.Of the 241 patients analyzed, 36 patients (14.9%) achieved pCR. Predictive factors for pCR are male sex (OR: 2.814, 95% CI: 1.015-7.806), histology of squamous carcinoma (OR: 3.065, 95% CI: 1.233-7.619) or other than adenocarcinoma (OR: 5.788, 95% CI: 1.878-17.733) and induction therapy that includes radiation therapy (OR: 4.096, 95% CI: 1.785-9.401) and targeted therapies (OR: 7.625, 95% CI: 2.147-27.077). Prevalence of postoperative pulmonary complications was higher in patients treated with neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy (p = 0.032).Male sex, histology of squamous carcinoma or other than ADC, and induction therapy that includes radiotherapy or targeted therapy are positive predictors for obtaining pCR. Induction chemo-radiotherapy is associated with a higher risk of postoperative pulmonary complications.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to explore the mechanical properties of AlCrSiN and AlTiSiN coatings deposited on Inconel and steel substrates after thermal treatments of 500 °C and 800 °C. Nanoindentation was used to measure the hardness and elastic modulus of the coatings, and microindentation was used for observing the contact damage with Hertzian contact loadings. Microscratch and Mercedes tests were used to evaluate the adhesive strength between coating and substrate with both progressive and static loads, respectively. The surface damage was inspected by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Focus ion beams (FIB) were used to mill the cross-sections in order to detect the extent and mode of failure. The results show that AlCrSiN coatings and Inconel substrates exhibit better mechanical performance, even after thermal treatments.

Abstract

Abstract In recent years, natural products with antifungal and antioxidant activities are being increasingly researched for a more sustainable alternative to the chemicals currently used for the same purpose. The plant pathogenic fungus Alternaria alternata is a causative agent of diseases in citrus, leading to huge economic losses. Antioxidants are important for the production of medicines for various diseases that may be related to the presence of free radicals, such as cancer, and in the cosmetic industry as an anti-aging agent and the food industry as preservatives. This study evaluated the antifungal and antioxidant potential of extracts of mature leaves of Myrcia splendens, a tree species that occurs in the Brazilian Cerrado. The antioxidant potential was analyzed by an assay of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging method, and the antifungal activity was assessed through the evaluation of mycelial growth. Majority of the extracts exhibited a strong antioxidant activity, especially the acetonic extract (4A). The antioxidant activity may be related to the presence of phenolic compounds. However, the extracts showed no inhibitory activity of mycelial growth of the fungus tested, with the exception of dichloromethanic extract (2B), which had an inhibitory effect (10.2%) at the end of testing.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES Robotic surgery, although it shares some technical features with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), offers some advantages, such as ergonomic design and a 3-dimensional view. Thus, the learning curve for robotic lung resection could be expected to be shorter than that of VATS for surgeons who are proficient in VATS. The goal of this study was to analyse the robotic learning curve of a VATS experienced surgeon and to compare it to his own VATS learning curve for anatomical lung resections. METHODS We conducted a retrospective observational study based on the prospectively recorded data of the first 150 anatomical lung resections performed with VATS (75 cases) and with the robotic (75 cases) approach by the same surgeon in our centre. Learning curves were analysed using the cumulative sum method to assess the trends for total operating time and surgical failure (intraoperative complications, conversion, technical postoperative complications and reintervention) across case sequences. Subsequently, using adequate statistical tests, we compared the postoperative outcomes in both groups. RESULTS The median operating time was similar for both approaches (P = 0.401). Surgical failure rate was higher for the robotic cases (21.3% vs 12%; P = 0.125). Based on cumulative sum analyses, operating time decreased starting with case 34 in the VATS group and with case 32 in the robotic cohort. Surgical failure tended to decline starting with case 28 in the VATS group and with case 32 in the robotic group. Perioperative results were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS When we compared robotic and VATS learning curves for anatomical lung resection, we did not find any differences. Postoperative outcomes were also similar with both approaches.

Abstract

Blunt injury to the abdominal aorta is a rare but potentially fatal event. Despite being much less common than thoracic aorta involvement, it carries high morbidity and mortality. Computed tomography (CT) has become the standard method for evaluating the trauma patient and can provide a rapid accurate diagnosis of aortic injury. Depending on the magnitude of the traumatic forces, aortic injuries may be present in blunt abdominal trauma and appear as a spectrum of disease ranging from small intraluminal defects to full-thickness circumferential ruptures. We classify lesions into four groups as it has been reported in the literature: intimal flap (grade I), intramural hematoma (grade II), pseudoaneurysm (grade III), and rupture (grade IV). Radiologists play a crucial role in the evaluation and care of these patients since imaging findings significantly affect clinical management. The purpose of this paper is to describe the different types of traumatic injury to the abdominal aorta, highlighting the key imaging findings on computed tomography (CT).

19. Nuevas perspectivas para la exploración en zonas de cobertura post-mineral: caso de estudio en la pampa caya (20°30’ - 21°s)

En la Cordillera de Domeyko, al noreste del distrito minero Collahuasi, se encuentra la Pampa Caya, una cuenca sedimentaria de edad miocena, que cubre casi en totalidad la geología de la zona. A partir del uso de datos geofísicos de potencial magnético y gravimétrico se determinaron las unidades y estructuras geológicas que se encuentran bajo la cobertura en la Pampa Caya. Utilizando filtros Pasa-Baja, Pasa-Alta y primeras derivadas verticales del Vector Residual del Campo Magnético y Anomalía de Bouguer, se logró interpretar anomalías geofísicas que indican una continuidad de las formaciones y estructuras ocultas bajo la pampa. Con estos resultados fue posible correlacionar la continuidad de las formaciones Collahuasi, Quehuita y Cerro Empexa, fallas inversas locales y establecer la continuidad latitudinal del Sistema de Falla de Domeyko. Las características geológicas y geofísicas distintivas regionales para franjas metalogénicas andinas y distritales del clúster de Collahuasi fueron aplicadas en la zona de estudio, con la finalidad de proponer un mapa prospectivo bajo la cobertura post-mineral de la Pampa Caya.

Abstract

Organizational vitality encompasses organizational mission and identity, organizational purpose and values, and employee engagement, cohesiveness, anxiety, and information sharing. Using the organizational vitality framework consisting of the following five pillars: (1) human, (2) knowledge, (3) intellectual, (4) financial capital, and (5) market value, we propose a reflection guide and specific calls to action for academic leaders including deans, department chairs, assistant/associate deans, and others within pharmacy and healthcare education systems. Our overall aim is to provide a blueprint for academic leaders to assess and enhance the organizational health, vitality, resiliency, and sustainability of their pharmacy educational programs using an established organizational vitality framework. This guide can help academic leaders at all levels to reflect on their organization’s vitality and use the steps outlined here to renew conversations about faculty life, identities as leaders, the global pharmacy Academy’s core mission and values, and the pursuit of work-life harmony in the context of their pharmacy schools’ organizational vitality. All leaders within pharmacy educational programs should identify and embrace a holistic and guided framework that emphasizes organizational vitality.

Abstract

Eight phloroglucinols from Garcinia dauphinensis were recently reported to have good to moderate antiplasmodial and anticancer activities, consistent with other phloroglucinol derivatives isolated from natural sources. Chiroptical properties were previously calculated and compared to experimental data for compound 2 as a means to deduce its absolute configuration. Tentative assignments for the remaining compounds were also reported based on these data. In order to arrive at stereochemical assignments for phloroglucinols 1 and 3-8, ECD spectra and specific rotations were computed for all stereoisomers of each compound. Molecular orbital analyses were also carried out for the most energetically favorable conformers of each compound. Absolute configurations are reported for all eight phloroglucinols for the first time.

Abstract

Honey bees are affected by a wide variety of parasites and pathogens, some of them were previously found in bee honey. Considering that spore-forming microorganisms are expected to remain latent in raw honey, presence of microsporidia, spore-forming bacteria, and viruses protected by peptide structures might represent a threat for bees. It is widely known that parasites and pathogens are one of the main factors implied in the worldwide decline of wild pollinators and colony losses of managed bees, and their detection in honey could be used to prevent the spread of diseases among colonies. Honey from 57 apiaries of Argentina located in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Formosa, La Rioja, Neuquén, Río Negro and Santa Fe provinces was collected between March and October, 2012. DNA was extracted from the pellet obtained by centrifugation of 10 g of honey and pathogen DNA was amplified by qPCR, and products were purified, sequenced and analysed using BLAST software. Honey from every apiary contained DNA of at least one pathogen, with a high occurrence of Apis mellifera filamentous virus (AmFV) and Apicystis bombi, although Nosema ceranae, Paenibacillus larvae, and Ascosphaera apis were also detected. Here, we report the presence of DNA of several bee pathogens in honey from commercial apiaries, and provide a fast and efficient screening method that could be useful to indirectly estimate pathogen presence in apiaries.

Abstract

A series of bifunctional platinum catalysts were prepared, supported on alumina or different zeolites, some of which were submitted to either desilication or dealumination in order to modify their acidic properties. The catalysts were characterized for their structural and textural properties, their acidic properties, including distribution of acid strength and Bronsted and Lewis acidity, their metallic properties, and used in the hydrocracking of polystyrene under kinetic control, where activity in end-of-chain scission and random scission of the polymer has been quantified as well as the distribution of products. Activation energies and pre-exponential factors have been calculated from the kinetic data, and analyzed in terms of compensation effect, in order to extract conclusions on activity, active centers and reaction pathways. Finally, activation energies, both of end-of-chain and random scissions, yield to gasoline fraction and percentage of aromatics in the gasoline fraction have been correlated with catalytic properties in order to extract conclusions on the major catalytic properties affecting catalytic performance in this process, from the point of view of catalytic design.

27. Intense pulsed light: Results in chronic dry eye syndrome after LASIK

Abstract

A report is presented on the visual and clinical results from a retrospective case series of patients with chronic, evaporative, dry eye syndrome (DES), after refractive surgery, and treated with intense pulsed light treatment (IPL). Four sessions were performed, and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was completed before initiating treatment and after the last session. Pre- and post-treatment data included: visual acuity (VA), refraction, clinical evaluation (DEWS severity grading, and Oxford corneal staining), and Orbscan topography. Twenty eyes were treated and the following data recorded: SchirmerI 14.7±5.6; 15.6±3.4mm, tear breakup time (TBUT) 3.4±1.6; 5.1±1.2s (P>.003), DEWS 3.4±0.5; 1.6±0.7 (P .003), VA 0.67±0.26; 0.90±0.15 (P .003), spherical equivalent -0.31±0.6; -0.08±0.38D (P>.003), OSDI 34±16; 28±11.0 points (P>.003), frequency artificial tear use 3.4±2.0; 2.5±1.9 times/day (P>.03). A significant clinical and visual improvement was observed, together with a decreased frequency in artificial tear use, in LASIK patients with chronic DES after IPL treatment.

Abstract

We present the results of the first molecular analysis of the phylogenetic affinities of the Asian colubroid genus Sibynophis. We recovered a sister-group relationship between Sibynophis and the New World Scaphiodontophis. Although Liophidium sometimes is associated with these genera, the relationship is distant. Morphological characters that Liophidium shares with Sibynophis and Scaphiodontophis are resolved as homoplasies that probably reflect the similarities of their specialized feeding habits. The traditional subfamily Sibynophiinae is elevated to the family-level, and Scaphiodontophiinae is placed in its synonymy.

Las mezclas asfálticas tibias (MAT) son mezclas asfálticas producidas a temperaturas reducidas en comparación con las mezclas asfálticas en caliente (MAC) convencionales. Reducciones de temperatura del orden de 10 a 50 °C son posibles mediante la incorporación de diversos aditivos tipo MAT. Sin embargo, diferentes aspectos, incluyendo la estructura interna de MAT, aún son objeto de estudio. Consecuentemente, este artículo se centró en la evaluación de la estructura interna de MAT (calculada en términos de las características de los vacíos conectados (VC)), fabricadas con tres aditivos tipo MAT: Asphamin®, Sasobit®, y Evotherm®. El contenido de VC corresponde a la fracción de vacíos que forman rutas conectadas en un espécimen compactado y está mejor relacionado con la respuesta de la mezcla asfáltica (e.g., permeabilidad) que el contenido total de vacíos. El análisis de VC se basó en la aplicación de tomografía computarizada con rayos-X y el subsecuente análisis de imágenes. Los resultados correspondientes sugirieron la necesidad de realizar investigación adicional para caracterizar mezclas compactadas en campo, producidas a niveles de densificación comparables con aquellos obtenidos en laboratorio. Adicionalmente, la inclusión de aditivos tipo MAT y la correspondiente reducción de temperatura no afectaron notoriamente la estructura interna de especímenes compactados en laboratorio (115 mm de altura) producidos para evaluación de mezcla en laboratorio.

BackgroundInterstitial lung disease (ILD) is the most common and relevant pulmonary complication, that contributes significantly to increased morbidity and mortality in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Thus, increased awareness of this complication is a real challenge in the clinical setting; in particular, an accurate strategy to detect RA-ILD is crucial to assure the survival and quality of life of RA patients.In the last years, the pulmonary ultrasound (US) has been proposed to assess ILD in rheumatic diseases [1, 2]. Preliminary results have demonstrated a positive correlation between their findings and those of HRCT and diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO).Although these results are exciting, the value and potential application of US in detect ILD in daily clinical setting of patients with RA remain to be clearly delineated.ObjectivesTo investigate the potential role of US in the detection of ILD in a real-life cohort of patients with RA.MethodsPatients with diagnosis of RA were consecutively enrolled. All patients underwent pulmonary examination, laboratory data, DLCO measure, chest HRCT and radiographs, and US examination. A healthy group was included as control group.US was performed according the 14-intercostal space scanning protocol using the following semiquantitative scale [0 = normal (≤5 B-lines); 1 = slight (≥6 and ≤15 B-lines); 2 = moderate, (≤16 and ≥30 B-lines); 3 = severe (≥30 B-lines)].ResultsA total of 74 RA patients and 74 healthy controls were included. Thirty of 74 patients (40.5%) showed US signs of ILD with respect to the healthy controls (3 subjects, 4.1%) (p=0.0001); whereas HRCT showed ILD in 27 (36.4%) of 74 patients.Among the 30 patients that showed US findings of ILD, 17 (56.6%) were asymptomatic from respiratory view-point. The sensitivity and specificity of US were 92% and 89% respectively.A positive correlation between US and HRCT findings were found (p= < 0.0001) whereas no correlation was found with chest radiographs and DLCO findings (p = 0.2971 and 0.7856 respectively). Positive association between US findings and DAS28-ESR, RF and anti-CCP (p=0.0076, 0.0044, 0.0074 respectively) was found.Feasibility, represented by the mean time spent to perform the pulmonary US assessment was 7.8 minutes (± SD 1.2, range 6 to 10 minutes).ConclusionOur results support the potential of US in detect accurately ILD in a real-life cohort of patients with RA and provide a rationale to consider it as a friendly screening tool to be implemented in early phases of the disease.References[1]Gutierrez M, Salaffi F, Carotti M, et al. Abstract

Several Doctor of Pharmacy programs have rescinded their requirement for applicants to complete the Pharmacy College Admissions Test, modified their requirements for prerequisite coursework, and reduced the minimum grade point average required for admission. As schools and colleges of pharmacy begin to use these and other more holistic approaches to recruitment and admission, the quantity and quality of students in the applicant pool will continue to shift. In alignment with their unique mission, values, and vision statements, pharmacy programs have also expanded aspects of their application and review process to increasingly focus on applicants’ leadership skills, community service, teamwork, collaboration skills, and paid and volunteer work. These aspects allow them to look beyond a candidate’s academic performance and instead emphasize skills and affective domain areas that are aligned with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education standards and Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education outcomes. Ways in which pharmacy schools and colleges can refine their recruitment and admissions processes to better align with their unique curricular and programmatic niche areas are discussed.

Abstract

Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the WHO on 11 March 2020 and global surgical practice was compromised. This Commission aimed to document and reflect on the changes seen in the surgical environment during the pandemic, by reviewing colleagues’ experiences and published evidence. Methods In late 2020, BJS contacted colleagues across the global surgical community and asked them to describe how severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) had affected their practice. In addition to this, the Commission undertook a literature review on the impact of COVID-19 on surgery and perioperative care. A thematic analysis was performed to identify the issues most frequently encountered by the correspondents, as well as the solutions and ideas suggested to address them. Results BJS received communications for this Commission from leading clinicians and academics across a variety of surgical specialties in every inhabited continent. The responses from all over the world provided insights into multiple facets of surgical practice from a governmental level to individual clinical practice and training. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has uncovered a variety of problems in healthcare systems, including negative impacts on surgical practice. Global surgical multidisciplinary teams are working collaboratively to address research questions about the future of surgery in the post-COVID-19 era. The COVID-19 pandemic is severely damaging surgical training. The establishment of a multidisciplinary ethics committee should be encouraged at all surgical oncology centres. Innovative leadership and collaboration is vital in the post-COVID-19 era.

Abstract

The Suez Canal is one of the world’s most important maritime routes, as shown by the almost 19,000 transits made every year. Despite its importance to seaborne trade, few statistics about the operation are available. This paper outlines a method to generate transit information from the matching of Automatic Identification System (AIS) ship tracking data and the modeled spatial environment of the Suez Canal. Additionally, important features such as the waiting time at anchor and the access routes to the Canal are extracted from adjustments to Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm. The algorithm is designed to be deployed in a distributed setting for the handling of big data sets.

Abstract

Introduction The paradoxical benefit of obesity, the ‘obesity paradox’, has been analyzed in lung surgical populations with contradictory results. Our goal was assessing the relationship of body mass index (BMI) to acute outcomes after minimally invasive major pulmonary resections. Methods Retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent pulmonary anatomical resection through a minimally invasive approach for the period 2014–2019. Patients were grouped as underweight, normal, overweight and obese type I, II and III. Adjusted odds ratios regarding postoperative complications (overall, respiratory, cardiovascular and surgical morbidity) were produced with their exact 95% confidence intervals. All tests were considered statistically significant at p Results Among 722 patients included in the study, 37.7% had a normal BMI and 61.8% were overweight or obese patients. When compared with that of normal BMI patients, adjusted pulmonary complications were significantly higher in obese type I patients (2.6% vs 10.6%, OR: 4.53 [95%CI: 1.86–12.11]) and obese type II–III (2.6% vs 10%, OR: 6.09 [95%CI: 1.38–26.89]). No significant differences were found regarding overall, cardiovascular or surgical complications among groups. Conclusions Obesity has not favourable effects on early outcomes in patients undergoing minimally invasive anatomical lung resections, since the risk of respiratory complications in patients with BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 and BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 is 4.5 and 6 times higher than that of patients with normal BMI.

Abstract

Recent case-series of small size implied a pathophysiological association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and severe large-vessel acute ischemic stroke. Given that severe strokes are typically associated with poor prognosis and can be very efficiently treated with recanalization techniques, confirmation of this putative association is urgently warranted in a large representative patient cohort to alert stroke clinicians, and inform pre- and in-hospital acute stroke patient pathways. We pooled all consecutive patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and acute ischemic stroke in 28 sites from 16 countries. To assess whether stroke severity and outcomes (assessed at discharge or at the latest assessment for those patients still hospitalized) in patients with acute ischemic stroke are different between patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19, we performed 1:1 propensity score matching analyses of our COVID-19 patients with non-COVID-19 patients registered in the Acute Stroke Registry and Analysis of Lausanne Registry between 2003 and 2019. Between January 27, 2020, and May 19, 2020, 174 patients (median age 71.2 years; 37.9% females) with COVID-19 and acute ischemic stroke were hospitalized (median of 12 patients per site). The median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was 10 (interquartile range [IQR], 4-18). In the 1:1 matched sample of 336 patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19, the median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was higher in patients with COVID-19 (10 [IQR, 4-18] versus 6 [IQR, 3-14]), P=0.03; (odds ratio, 1.69 [95% CI, 1.08-2.65] for higher National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score). There were 48 (27.6%) deaths, of which 22 were attributed to COVID-19 and 26 to stroke. Among 96 survivors with available information about disability status, 49 (51%) had severe disability at discharge. Abstract

Garcinia dauphinensis is a previously uninvestigated endemic plant species of Madagascar. The new phloroglucinols dauphinols A-F and 3'-methylhyperjovoinol B (1-7) and six known phloroglucinols (8-13) together with tocotrienol 14 and three triterpenoids 15-17 were isolated from an ethanolic extract of G. dauphinensis roots using various chromatographic techniques. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by NMR, MS, optical rotation, and ECD data. Theoretical ECD spectra and specific rotations for 2 were calculated and compared to experimental data in order to assign its absolute configuration. Among the compounds tested, 1 showed the most promising growth inhibitory activity against A2870 ovarian cancer cells, with IC(50) = 4.5 ± 0.9 μM, while 2 had good antiplasmodial activity against the Dd2 drug-resistant strain of Plasmodium falciparum, with IC(50) = 0.8 ± 0.1 μM.

Abstract

A report is presented on the visual and clinical results from a retrospective case series of patients with chronic, evaporative, dry eye syndrome (DES), after refractive surgery, and treated with intense pulsed light treatment (IPL). Four sessions were performed, and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire was completed before initiating treatment and after the last session. Pre- and post-treatment data included: visual acuity (VA), refraction, clinical evaluation (DEWS severity grading, and Oxford corneal staining), and Orbscan topography. Twenty eyes were treated and the following data recorded: SchirmerI 14.7±5.6; 15.6±3.4mm, tear breakup time (TBUT) 3.4±1.6; 5.1±1.2s (P.003), DEWS 3.4±0.5; 1.6±0.7 (P.003), Oxford grade 0.8±0.77; 0.4±0.75 (P.003), VA 0.67±0.26; 0.90±0.15 (P.0001), best corrected VA 0.83±0.18; 0.92±0.14 (P.003), spherical equivalent -0.31±0.6; -0.08±0.38D (P.003), OSDI 34±16; 28±11.0 points (P.003), frequency artificial tear use 3.4±2.0; 2.5±1.9 times/day (P.03). A significant clinical and visual improvement was observed, together with a decreased frequency in artificial tear use, in LASIK patients with chronic DES after IPL treatment.

Abstract

Project aim was to examine the feasibility and logistics of mentored self-directed learning (MSDL) through group and individual presentations in an accelerated modified block curriculum. Perspectives of students and faculty members toward the incorporation of MSDL were also explored.During a two-week pharmacotherapy block, students made group presentations requiring two elements: a case presentation on curricular content (Element-1) and an inclusion of "novel" information students did not receive didactically (Element-2). Curricular content for Element-1 stemmed from a pharmacotherapy course on gastroenterology and nutrition, and individual presentations were scheduled during a semester-long skill-based course. Surveys on student perspectives were conducted at baseline, after group presentations, and after individual presentations. Faculty members also provided feedback and evaluations.Whereas 58% of students considered a case presentation (Element-1) more valuable for their learning than inclusion of Element-2, 78% of faculty's responses indicated the incorporation of both Elements was valuable. For the following individual presentations, 73% of students were willing and able to present a topic not extensively addressed in the didactic curriculum by employing MSDL. Students improved their confidence in preparing and making presentations for peers and faculty/preceptors through the MSDL activities (p 0.025). At the end of this project, the faculty determined 88% of students were ready to give a presentation considered appropriate for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience.MSDL through group and individual presentation activities were feasible and provided a valuable learning experience for students in an accelerated modified block curriculum.

50. Buried thrust belt front of the western Central Andes of northern Chile: Style, age, and relationship with basement heterogeneities

Abstract

We present a regional-scale study combining field, seismic, and limited borehole information to analyze the structural characteristics of the thrust belt front of the western Central Andes at 21°S. This region, located in northern Chile, consists of the easternmost part of the Coastal Cordillera, the Pampa del Tamarugal, and the western Domeyko Cordillera (or Chilean Precordillera). On the surface, a series of N–S-oriented folds alternating between monoclines and narrow anticline and syncline folds containing Mesozoic, Upper Cretaceous, and Cenozoic rocks form part of the main structural styles, which are frequently bound by west-verging reverse faults that form the basement of the deeper structural levels of the upper crust. The interpretation of a regional seismic grid composed of N–S, NE–SW, and WNW–ESE-oriented 2-D seismic profiles revealed the presence of several blind west-verging inversion anticlines that define the orogenic front of the Central Andes at this latitude. These anticline folds are related to the partial and/or total positive reactivation of ancient east-dipping Jurassic normal basement faults bounding half-graben structures and sub-basins developed within the Tarapaca Basin. Our results suggest that the thrust belt front in this region is preferably located under the Pampa del Tamarugal, and not along the topographic culmination of the western Precordillera as traditionally proposed. New tectonic restorations of 2-D structural models suggest that, during tectonic inversion, between 3 and 4 km of crustal shortening were accommodated by vertical motion along the inverted normal faults. The presence of Upper Cretaceous synorogenic deposits covering the Jurassic syn-rift deposits on the inversion anticlines indicates that both basin inversion and formation of the western thrust belt front began during the Late Cretaceous, and not during the Eocene “Incaic” tectonic phase as previously suggested by regional studies developed in the area.
