Context The performance of commercial beef-breeding herds in northern Australia is highly variable. Identifying and understanding the major factors that influence this is critical in determining which management interventions should be implemented to best manage these factors. Aims This study aimed to describe the occurrence and magnitude of the risk factors identified as being strongly associated with one or more measures of cow performance in northern Australia. Methods A prospective epidemiological study was conducted in a cross-section of commercial beef-breeding herds in northern Australia, to determine and quantify the major associations of up to 83 candidate herd management, nutritional and environmental risk factors with cow performance. Descriptive analyses of significant risk factors were conducted. Key results Unfavourable levels of risk factors were observed for all country types and across three cow-age groups. However, generally, adverse property-level nutritional, environmental and management risk factors had a higher incidence in the Northern Forest, which was associated with significantly lower performance of heifers and cows. This was reflected in generally lower body condition of heifers and cows in this country type. Although the performance of heifers and cows was generally higher in the Southern Forest, the irregular incidence of adverse risk factors contributed to the observed quite variable performance. Conclusions The factors significantly affecting the performance of cows in the major beef-breeding regions of northern Australia are described. These factors were additively more adverse in the Northern Forest. Implications In this study, the necessary understanding of the factors most likely to be affecting the performance beef cows in this environment has been described. This is required to make appropriate decisions about management interventions to control these factors.

Context Sound reproductive efficiency is a key determinant for the overall productivity and profitability of a beef breeding business. Failure of a cow to conceive results in either culling or the cost of carrying non-pregnant animals. Aims This study aimed to determine and quantify the major factors associated with non-pregnancy in commercial beef breeding herds of northern Australia. Methods A prospective population-based epidemiological study of the likelihood of non-pregnancy in cows after an annual mating in northern Australian beef breeding cows used data from 73 herds from four broad country types and 62 323 animal years; approximately 80 property-, management-group- and cow-level risk factors were considered. A multivariable model building process was employed to scrutinise the resulting dataset, so as to identify what herd management practices, nutritional, environmental, and individual cow factors were associated with non-pregnancy and estimate their magnitude of effect. Key results Non-pregnancy was disproportionately high in the Northern Forest (32.1%), compared with the Northern Downs, Central Forest and Southern Forest where it was 17.1%, 16.0% and 13.2% respectively. Time of expected calving had the largest impact on occurrence of non-pregnancy. Parity also had a significant influence, with first-lactation cows typically having 5–12% higher non-pregnancy than did mature cows. Non-pregnancy decreased with an increasing body condition score at the branding/weaning muster for lactating cows. The difference in non-pregnancy when comparing availability of wet-season pasture phosphorus content and digestibility of pasture during the dry season was 13.2 and 10.2 percentage points respectively. Conclusions This study demonstrated the substantial impact environment, herd management practices, nutrition and disease factors can have on the reproductive performance of females. Implications To optimise the efficiency of females (through reducing the occurrence of non-pregnancy) under commercial conditions in northern Australia, production systems should support beef herds calving early in the production year, being in at least moderate body condition and having access to more digestible pastures that address the nutritional requirements for both protein and phosphorus. This indicates focus for management, especially in the Northern Forest where the likelihood of non-pregnancy was highest.

Aims This study aimed to determine and quantify the major factors associated with lactating cows becoming pregnant within 4 months of calving (P4M) in commercial beef breeding herds of northern Australia. Methods A prospective epidemiological study was conducted using 78 commercial northern Australian beef breeding herds and involved 78 000 cattle that were monitored for 3–4 years. A multivariable model-building process was employed to scrutinise the resulting dataset to identify what herd-management practices, and nutritional, environmental and individual cow factors were major determinants of lactating cows becoming pregnant within 4 months of calving (P4M) and to estimate their magnitudes of effect. Key results Overall, 41.6% of cows per production year were successful for P4M. Country type was strongly associated with 65.4%, 57.5%, 61.8% and 16.4% P4M for the Southern Forest, Central Forest, Northern Downs, and Northern Forest respectively. Between-year variability ranged between 3.3 and 11.7 percentage points. Cows calving in December–January (61%) had a substantially higher occurrence of P4M than did cows calving between July and September (15%). The difference in P4M when comparing availability of wet-season pasture protein and phosphorus was 12.7 and 20.3 percentage points respectively. Modelling of the impact of group seroprevalence and management group prevalence of recent infection with several infectious diseases was estimated, with a large negative association between group bovine viral diarrhoea seroprevalence and P4M suggested. Conclusions This study further demonstrated the substantial impact that environment, herd management practices, nutrition and disease factors can have on the reproductive performance of females. Implications To optimise the performance of females (through increasing the occurrence of cows contributing calves in consecutive years) under commercial conditions in northern Australia, herd managers should focus on maximising the proportion of cows within a herd calving at the desired time of the year, ensuring that any nutritional deficiencies and herd health issues are managed, and that cows are managed such that they are of good body condition score at the time of calving.

Context There are multiple reports of high annual cow mortality rates in northern Australia, but no reports clearly indicating the overall rates and the impact of primary risk factors. Aims The research aimed to determine which measured region-, property-, management group- and animal-level risk factors are associated with missing pregnant females. Methods Risk factors for the annual rate of pregnant-cow mortality were investigated in an epidemiological study using outcomes for 21 554 cows from 52 beef herds in 2009 and 2010 in four primary country types within the mostly-dry tropical north Australian environment. Modelling of 2001–2011 Australian beef-herd statistics was used to corroborate and further quantify findings. Key results In the epidemiological study, the overall predicted annual mean incidence of missing pregnant cows, a surrogate for mortality, was 10.9%, including lost tags and unrecorded cow movement that were estimated to constitute up to 9% missing cows. Risk factors associated with higher pregnant-cow mortality were as follows: not having follow-up rainfall more than 30 days after the first wet-season storms (4 percentage point increase)

Context Poor nutrition of late-pregnant cows is highly prevalent in the dry tropics and associated with high levels of calf mortality. Aims It was hypothesised that supplementation with protein to prepartum cows would restore the normal decline in progesterone prepartum and increase the transfer of passive immunity to calves, with this being further enhanced by inclusion of yeast fermentation products. Methods In total, 84 heifers and 45 cows were selected for a completely randomised block design, with the following three dietary treatments: unsupplemented, receiving ad libitum low-protein hay only; hay supplemented with 1 kg/day of protein; and supplementation with both protein and 14 g/day of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product. Supplementation occurred for an average of 14 days before calving. Cow plasma samples in the week before parturition, and the first plasma sample after parturition, were analysed for progesterone and metabolites. Newborn calves were weighed and blood-sampled three times per week during the first 2 weeks after birth. The first two calf plasma samples were analysed for total protein, albumin, and globulin concentrations. Data were analysed using a mixed-effects model and the decline of progesterone concentration over time was modelled using a non-linear segmented model. Key results Prepartum supplementation reduced cow liveweight loss, increased glucose, reduced fat mobilisation metabolites and tended to increase average daily weight gain of calves. Including yeast fermentation products in the supplement tended to increase the transfer of passive immunity to calves. Supplementation decreased plasma progesterone before parturition and including yeast fermentation products further advanced the initiation of progesterone decline. Conclusion Protein supplementation of protein-deficient beef cows during late pregnancy helps restore the normal decrease in progesterone before parturition. Implications This study identified a plausible hormonal mechanism explaining how poor nutrition around birth can increase calf loss, opening new possibilities for short-term diet management strategies to reduce calf mortality and improve calf health.

Bovine trichomoniasis, caused by the protozoal parasite Tritrichomonas foetus, is a highly contagious venereal disease characterised by early pregnancy loss, abortion and pyometra. Persistently infected bulls and cows are the primary reservoirs of infection in infected herds. This research investigated the prevalence of T. foetus infection in bulls from properties located across northern Australia and New South Wales. Preputial samples were collected from 606 bulls at slaughter and tested for T. foetus using the VetMAX-Gold Trich Detection Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific). The apparent prevalence of T. foetus infection varied between regions, with northern regions in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia showing a prevalence of 15.4%, 13.8% and 11.4%, respectively. There was some evidence of an association between infection and postcode (P = 0.06) and increasing bull age (P = 0.054). This study confirms that T. foetus infection is likely to be present in many beef breeding herds and contributing to lower than expected reproductive performance, particularly across northern Australia.

To compare reproduction in extensively managed, tropically adapted beef cows that were either seropositive or seronegative to Neospora caninum.Longitudinal study of cows within management groups.Compare pregnancy with weaning outcomes for 502 seropositive and 3255 seronegative cows in 25 management groups.We found N. caninum in all herds, with an average of 20% of 2640 tested animals seropositive within management group; prevalence varied between 0% and 94%. At 7 of 10 sites assessed, there was evidence of horizontal transmission of N. caninum. There was no overall difference in pregnancy rate (79% vs 75%; P0.05), reproductive wastage after confirmed pregnancy diagnosis (11% vs 10%; P0.05) or weaning rate (67% vs 68%; P0.05) between seronegative and seropositive cows, respectively. In one herd where a combination of risk factors for N. caninum was present, a significant reduction in pregnancy rate occurred after the 6 months mating (85% vs 69%; P0.05). The fetal and calf losses observed were lowest in south-east Queensland (4.3% of 117 pregnancies), highest in north-west Queensland (15.5% of 413 pregnancies) and intermediate in north-east Queensland (10.2% of 1625 pregnancies). Other infectious agents that are known to cause reproductive wastage were endemic in many herds, though none appeared to cause significant fetal or calf loss in this study.Despite a high prevalence of N. caninum, there was no apparent effect on beef cattle reproduction, but there is potential to cause reproductive wastage if known risk factors to neosporosis are in effect.

The genetics of reproduction is poorly understood because the heritabilities of traits currently recorded are low. To elucidate the genetics underlying reproduction in beef cattle, we performed a genome-wide association study using the bovine SNP50 chip in 2 tropically adapted beef cattle breeds, Brahman and Tropical Composite. Here we present the results for 3 female reproduction traits: 1) age at puberty, defined as age in days at first observed corpus luteum (CL) after frequent ovarian ultrasound scans (AGECL); 2) the postpartum anestrous interval, measured as the number of days from calving to first ovulation postpartum (first rebreeding interval, PPAI); and 3) the occurrence of the first postpartum ovulation before weaning in the first rebreeding period (PW), defined from PPAI. In addition, correlated traits such as BW, height, serum IGF1 concentration, condition score, and fatness were also examined. In the Brahman and Tropical Composite cattle, 169 [false positive rate (FPR) = 0.262] and 84 (FPR = 0.581) SNP, respectively, were significant (P0.001) for AGECL. In Brahman, 41% of these significant markers mapped to a single chromosomal region on BTA14. In Tropical Composites, 16% of these significant markers were located on BTA5. For PPAI, 66 (FPR = 0.67) and 113 (FPR = 0.432) SNP were significant (P0.001) in Brahman and Tropical Composite, respectively, whereas for PW, 68 (FPR = 0.64) and 113 (FPR = 0.432) SNP were significant (P0.01). In Tropical Composites, the largest concentration of PPAI markers were located on BTA5 [19% (PPAI) and 23% (PW)], and BTA16 [17% (PPAI) and 18% (PW)]. In Brahman cattle, the largest concentration of markers for postpartum anestrus was located on BTA3 (14% for PPAI and PW) and BTA14 (17% PPAI). Very few of the significant markers for female reproduction traits for the Brahman and Tropical Composite breeds were located in the same chromosomal regions. However, fatness and BW traits as well as serum IGF1 concentration were found to be associated with similar genome regions within and between breeds. Clusters of SNP associated with multiple traits were located on BTA14 in Brahman and BTA5 in Tropical Composites.

The study tested the hypothesis that reduced intravaginal implant progesterone (P(4)) concentration to synchronise oestrus would increase pregnancy rates to fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in Bos indicus heifers. Brahman heifers (n = 294; 2 year) were body condition scored (BCS), weighed and scanned for presence of a corpus luteum (CL). Only cyclic heifers were selected and allocated randomly within BCS and 25 kg bodyweight category to one of three P(4) treatment groups. On day 10, heifers received a P(4) implant (CueMate-1-pod, 0.78 g P(4); CueMate-2-pod, 1.56 g P(4); or CIDR-B, 1.9 g P(4)), 2 mg oestradiol benzoate (ODB) intramuscularly (i.m.) and 250 ug cloprostenol i.m.. At day 2, the implant was removed, 250 ug cloprostenol was injected i.m. and tail paint applied. The heifers received 1 mg ODB 24 h later and were FTAI 48-54 h after implant removal (day 0). Ten randomly selected heifers per group were blood sampled and scanned at days 10, 2, 0 and 6 to define the P(4) profiles pre- and post-FTAI. Heifers were heat-detected 18-20 days post-FTAI and oestrous heifers AI'd by the AM/PM rule. Bulls joined the heifers on day 27 post-FTAI. Transrectal ultrasonography estimated conception date on day 72. Statistical analysis examined the effects of treatment, technician, semen, ovarian status, BCS and liveweight, on pregnancy rate (PR) to FTAI. There was no significant difference (p = 0.362) in PR between treatment groups (CueMate 1-pod, 36.4%; CueMate 2-pod, 39.6%: CIDR-B, 28.3%), but PR was higher in those heifers with increased BCS between FTAI and pregnancy diagnosis (p = 0.005). Thirty-three per cent of monitor heifers had plasma P(4) concentrations of1 ng/ml on day 6 after FTAI; only 20% of these conceived vs 60% of heifers with P(4) ≥ 1 ng/ml. In summary, no significant difference in PR was identified between treatments but good BCS and a rising plane of nutrition were critical to PR of these pure grade Brahman heifers in northern Australia.

Agribusinesses associated with livestock agriculture recognize the importance of veterinary medicine in maintaining a vibrant and successful industry. Stewardship of corporate support involves close communication with advocates within the companies, providing them with documentation of the potential effects of corporate investments. This article describes the creation of the Michigan State University (MSU) Training Center for Dairy Professionals, a key aspect of which was the identification of innovative and productive areas of mutual interest and benefit. In addition to supporting the dairy industry by training veterinary students, the program offers specific benefits to investors, including the use of MSU facilities and direct participation in veterinary instruction.

The effects of pregnancy status (non-pregnant, early to mid (1 to 5 months) and late (> 6 months)) and month of pregnancy on live weight, carcass weight, dressing proportion, bruising and muscle properties were examined in 237 Shorthorn and Brahman crossbred cows (mean live weight 424 kg, 62% pregnant). The cows were transported 1155 km to an abattoir and given access to food and water until slaughter. Mustering to slaughter periods were 5, 6 or 7 days.The mean gross hot carcass weights for the 89 non-pregnant, 108 early to mid pregnant and 40 late pregnant cows were 207, 199 and 187 kg (P < 0·05). Their respective dressing proportions were 487, 469 and 443 g/kg (P < 0·05). Among the pregnant cows, carcass weight and dressing proportion decreased by 2·95 kg and 6 g/kg, respectively, for each month of pregnancy (P < 0·05).Cows in late pregnancy had lower mean initial yield (IY) and peak force (PF) shear values for m.longissimus dorsi (LD) than non-pregnant cows. The late-pregnant cows also had the greatest mean pH 24 h post mortem (pH24) and ultimate pH (pHu) values (P < 0·05). They also had a greater proportion of carcasses with high pHu values than the early to mid-pregnant and non-pregnant cows (0·30 v. 0·157 v. 0·079; (P < 005). Among the pregnant cows, mean pH24 increased by proportionately 0·038 and the proportion of high pH24 carcasses by 0·055 for each month of pregnancy (P < 0·05). Pregnancy status had no significant effect on mean fat depth, bruise score, PF-IY value or cooking loss.

Antibody responses in serum and semen, and immunoglobulin containing cell (ICC) populations in the genitalia of bulls were compared after inoculating Brucella abortus strain 19 into the seminal vesicles of two bulls (ISV route) and into testes in two other bulls (IT route). Bulls seroconverted as early as 1 week post-infection (PI). Peak serum titres as determined by the serum agglutination test (SAT), complement fixation test (CFT) and ELISA occurred at PI weeks 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Highest titres were in IT inoculated bulls. Seminal antibodies against B. arbotus S19 were demonstrated from 2 weeks PI by both the SAT and the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and highest titres occurred at PI weeks 3 and 4. Examination of immunoglobulins (Ig) in semen, however, revealed no significant differences of Ig isotypes between infected and control animals at any examination time. When bulls were killed at 7 weeks PI, quantitation of ICC in genital sections stained by the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase method revealed an overwhelming predominance of IgG containing cells in inflamed organs. In all cases IgG1- and IgG2-containing cells were prevalent, and present in approximately equal numbers. IgA-containing cells were second in prevalence in inflamed tissues while IgM cells were always in low percentage. High prevalence of ICC in infected genitalia, associated with elevated specific seminal antibodies but not with increased seminal Ig indicates that most Ig remains localised in tissues and is not transferred into genital secretions.

A systematic breeding soundness examination, including assessment of serving capacity was conducted on 5/8 Brahman, Brahman and Belmont Red bulls, most aged 2-4 years, at 12 different cattle properties across northern Australia. A subset of bulls (n=235) were subsequently mated in various groups, as multiple-sires, to cows and heifers at bull:female ratios of 2.5-6%. The number of calves sired by individual bulls (calf output) was determined by DNA typing for paternity. Overall, the incidence of physical abnormalities that were judged likely to result in reduced reproductive performance was low (5.6-12% of bulls). Measures of key physical traits scrotal circumference, sheath depth (vertical distance from ventral abdominal wall to preputial orifice), and sheath score were moderately to highly repeatable. Except in Belmont Red bulls, liveweight was positively correlated with scrotal circumference (r=0.36-0.78; P0.01), and both traits increased with age. In 2-year-old Brahman bulls only, percent normal spermatozoa was correlated with scrotal circumference (r=0.34; P0.05). However, 12 and 15% of Santa Gertrudis and Brahman bulls, respectively, with greater than or equal to the recommended threshold values for scrotal circumferences, had less than 50% morphologically normal spermatozoa. Size and conformation of the umbilicus was associated with conformation of the sheath, and influenced mating ability in 2-year-old Brahman and 3-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls. In 2-year-old Brahman bulls umbilical cord thickness was positively related (r=0.36; P0.05) to sheath depth, and negatively related (r=-0.65; P0.05) to number of mounts and serves in a serving capacity test. In 3-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls navel (external umbilical scar) score was negatively related to the number of serves (r=-0.53; P0.01) in a serving capacity test. None of the physical traits measured were consistently included in the final regression model for calf output for each breed.

Serving capacity studies were conducted on Santa Gertrudis, 5/8 Brahman, Brahman and Belmont Red bulls at 10 sites. Modifications, such as providing prior sexual experience, using females in oestrus and comparing restrained with unrestrained females, were made to the standard Bos taurus serving capacity test in a series of experiments with Santa Gertrudis bulls. Providing sexual experience to virgin bulls prior to testing improved the number of serves and libido scores in a serving capacity test. In serving capacity tests that used restrained females, expressions of sexual behaviour of bulls were not improved by having females in oestrus compared with non-oestrus females. There were more sexual behaviours, particularly mounts, in serving capacity tests involving restrained rather than unrestrained females. Summary statistics were collated from over 1100 serving capacity tests, in the 2 months prior to mating, across the 10 sites. In serving capacity tests using restrained females, in bulls of the same age, there were more expressions of sexual behaviours (except interest) in Belmont Red than in Brahman or 5/8 Brahman bulls with Santa Gertrudis bulls intermediate. The percentage of bulls displaying serves tended to increase with age; 82, 83 and 86% of 2-, 3- andor =4-year-old Belmont Red bulls, respectively, completed 1 or more serves. This compared with 50, 50 and 66% of 2-, 3- andor =4-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls and 31% of 2-year-old Brahman bulls. Between 2 and 9% of bulls did not display any sexual behaviour in serving capacity tests with restrained females. Across genotypes, there were few and inconsistent relationships between either mounts or serves and liveweight, condition score, scrotal circumference, testicular tone and sheath measurements. The exceptions were in 2-year-old Brahmans where mounts were negatively correlated (r=-0.61; P0.05) with umbilicus thickness and in 3-year-old Santa Gertrudis bulls, where serves (r=-0.53; P0.01) and mounts+serves (r=-0.49; P0.01) were negatively correlated with navel score. Measures of sexual behaviour were unable to consistently predict calf output of bulls in multiple-sire mating groups in extensive pastoral conditions. The main value of the serving capacity test in these genotypes is to identify whether a bull is capable of natural service.

Detailed semen evaluations were carried out on approximately 363 Santa Gertrudis, 5/8 Brahman and Brahman bulls on 12 different properties across northern Australia, as part of systematic breeding soundness examinations. A subset of bulls (n=245) were subsequently mated in groups, to cows and heifers at bull:female ratios of 2.5-6.0%, with the paternity of resulting calves being determined by microsatellite DNA testing. Motility traits of semen and spermatozoa were moderately repeatable and correlated with each other, but were unrelated to calf output. The percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa in ejaculates was moderately to highly repeatable (e.g. r=0.10-0.64). The most common morphological abnormalities seen were mid-piece abnormalities, in particular, distal mid-piece reflex associated with a cytoplasmic droplet. Semen quality, particularly percent normal spermatozoa, was consistently related to calf output. In general, bulls with50% normal spermatozoa sired few calves while bulls with the highest calf outputs had70% normal spermatozoa. The presence or absence of heparin binding proteins in semen did not influence calf output. Semen from 93% of tested bulls was positive for heparin binding proteins. These results confirm that examination of semen, in particular, evaluation of percent morphologically normal spermatozoa, should be included in the breeding soundness examination of bulls.

Calf output of bulls was derived using DNA typing for paternity following multiple-sire mating at two sites in northern Australia. At Swan's Lagoon Beef Cattle Research Station, 12, mixed-age, Brahman cross bulls were continuously mated with an average of 325 females in a 22km2 open-savannah paddock. Water was available in two troughs. Behaviour of the bulls and location of cows were monitored. At Kamilaroi Station, 2- to 2.5-year-old Brahman bulls were introduced to the study. Twenty-four bulls (HIGH%) were mated in an 84km2 paddock for 3.5 months to 411 heifers in 1995/1995 and for 4.5 months to 350 heifers and 320 first-lactation cows in 1995/1996. A second group of 10 bulls (LOW%) selected on reproductive soundness was mated concurrently in a neighbouring 60km2 paddock to 411 heifers in 1995/1995 and to 350 heifers and 298 first-lactation cows in 1995/1996. In each paddock in both years, 300-350 females were expected to cycle during mating. Both paddocks were flat and semi-forested and water was available only at troughs. At both sites, detailed physical and reproductive examinations of all bulls were conducted prior to and post-mating.Calf output of individual bulls was highly variable but repeatable (r=0.6-0.7) between years. Up to 90% of the 270-380 calves resulting from each mating were sired by between 6 and 8 bulls. Reducing from 3.7 to 2.8% bulls:females at Swan's Lagoon did not delay conceptions. At Kamilaroi, reproductively sound bulls achieved an estimated 5-6 conceptions per week over the peak mating period when sufficient cycling females were available. Differences in pregnancy rates between paddocks appeared due to differences in nutrition and it appeared that conceptions were not delayed with LOW% vs. HIGH% bulls. Variance between bulls in calf output was substantially lower when fewer bulls were used. Bull attrition occurred each year in the HIGH% paddock but not in the LOW% paddock. Calf output was unrelated to body condition of bulls. Seven of the 12 bulls in one 2-year period at Swan's Lagoon appeared to restrict their movement range to 250-750ha for 90-100% of the time. These ranges expanded when the bull:female ratio was reduced. Only one of the nine bulls remained within a 500ha home range for at least 85% of the time during peak mating in 1998 at 2.8% bulls:females. In previous years with 3.7% bulls:females, up to eight of the 12 bulls had remained within a 500ha home range for 85% of the time. Bull behaviour related to high calf output included restricted movement range, grazing with females at a majority of observations, stable social behaviour, and social dominance. These observations demonstrate that multiple-sire mating of reproductively sound Brahman and Brahman-derived bulls at 2.5% of cycling females will not jeopardise herd fertility under extensive management in northern Australia.

On 10 northern Australian properties, the number of calves sired (calf output) by individual bulls in multiple-sire matings was measured by DNA typing for paternity. There were 235 bulls (92 Santa Gertrudis, 25 5/8 Brahman and 119 Brahman) from 37 multiple-sire mating groups. Number of bulls in groups ranged from 2 to 25 and ages of bulls ranged from 2 to 5 years. Mating periods were for 3-12 months and bull mating percentages were 2.5-6%. In all, there were 4251 calves tested and the resolution of paternity ranged from 92.5 to 100% and averaged 97.7% across all sites. This included 9.9% of calves with no potential sires in any of the mating groups. Of the 235 bulls mated, 58% sired 10% or less calves in each of their respective mating groups with 6% not siring any calves. In contrast, 14% sired over 30% of the calves in each of the respective mating groups. When bulls were mated in groups of 8-24, the maximum percent of calves sired by individual bulls was 26+/-7% (mean+/-S.D.) with a range 11-36%. However, when bulls were mated in groups of 2-7, the maximum percent of calves sired by individual bulls was 59+/-19% with a range 24-94%. Calf output of bulls was moderately repeatable across years at four of five sites. Multiple regression models relating pre-mating measures of physical, seminal and behavioural traits to calf output were developed for the three breed groups. In all, only 138 of the 235 bulls were included in the models (40 Santa Gertrudis, 24 5/8 Brahman and 74 Brahman). Sheath and testicular traits, such as scrotal circumference and testicular tone, were generally not related to calf output, the exceptions being sheath depth in Brahman bulls which was negatively related (P0.05) and scrotal circumference in 5/8 Brahmans which was positively related (P=0.08) to calf output. Dominance was only included in the 5/8 Brahman model but there was no significant relationship between dominance hierarchy and calf output. Semen motility was only related (P0.05) to calf output in 5/8 Brahmans. However, measures of semen quality based on spermatozoa morphology were important contributors to calf output in the Santa Gertrudis and Brahman models where percent normal spermatozoa was positively related (P0.01) to calf output. In Santa Gertrudis and Brahman bulls, measures of sexual behaviour in the serving capacity test were related to calf output. In Santa Gertrudis, these were for the number of displays of sexual interest (P0.05), and mounts (P0.01), but not number of serves, whilst in Brahman bulls, libido score was positively related to calf output (P0.05). The models only explained 35-57% of the variation in calf output.

The genetics of heifer performance in tropical 'wet' and 'dry' seasons, and relationships with steer performance, were studied in Brahman (BRAH) and Tropical Composite (TCOMP) (50% Bos indicus, African Sanga or other tropically adapted Bos taurus; 50% non-tropically adapted Bos taurus) cattle of northern Australia. Data were from 2159 heifers (1027 BRAH, 1132 TCOMP), representing 54 BRAH and 51 TCOMP sires. Heifers were assessed after post-weaning 'wet' (ENDWET) and 'dry' (ENDDRY) seasons. Steers were assessed post-weaning, at feedlot entry, over a 70-day feed test, and after ~120-day finishing. Measures studied in both heifers and steers were liveweight (LWT), scanned rump fat, rib fat and M. longissimus area (SEMA), body condition score (CS), hip height (HH), serum insulin-like growth factor-I concentration (IGF-I), and average daily gains (ADG). Additional steer measures were scanned intra-muscular fat %, flight time, and daily (DFI) and residual feed intake (RFI). Uni- and bivariate analyses were conducted for combined genotypes and for individual genotypes. Genotype means were predicted for a subset of data involving 34 BRAH and 26 TCOMP sires. A meta-analysis of genetic correlation estimates examined how these were related to the difference between measurement environments for specific traits. There were genotype differences at the level of means, variances and genetic correlations. BRAH heifers were significantly (P < 0.05) faster-growing in the 'wet' season, slower-growing in the 'dry' season, lighter at ENDDRY, and taller and fatter with greater CS and IGF-I at both ENDWET and ENDDRY. Heritabilities were generally in the 20 to 60% range for both genotypes. Phenotypic and genetic variances, and genetic correlations, were commonly lower for BRAH. Differences were often explained by the long period of tropical adaptation of B. indicus. Genetic correlations were high between corresponding measures at ENDWET and ENDDRY, positive between fat and muscle measures in TCOMP but negative in BRAH (mean of 13 estimates 0.50 and ᾰ0.19, respectively), and approximately zero between steer feedlot ADG and heifer ADG in BRAH. Numerous genetic correlations between heifers and steers differed substantially from unity, especially in BRAH, suggesting there may be scope to select differently in the sexes where that would aid the differing roles of heifers and steers in production. Genetic correlations declined as measurement environments became more different, the rates of decline (environment sensitivity) sometimes differing with genotype. Similar measures (LWT, HH and ADG; IGF-I at ENDWET in TCOMP) were genetically correlated with steer DFI in heifers as in steers. Heifer SEMA was genetically correlated with steer feedlot RFI in BRAH (0.75 ± 0.27 at ENDWET, 0.66 ± 0.24 at ENDDRY). Selection to reduce steer RFI would reduce SEMA in BRAH heifers but otherwise have only small effects on heifers before their first joining.

During mammalian spermiogenesis nucleosomal histone proteins bound to DNA are replaced by protamines. The integrity and stability of the protamine-DNA association in sperm can be measured using the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA). The recent emergence of compelling information from assisted reproduction in humans of a relationship between sperm chromatin stability and the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy has led to considerable interest in production and recreational animals.1 The aim in the present study was to determine the incidence of sperm chromatin instability amongst bulls in a subtropical region of northern Australia, as a first step in evaluating whether sperm chromatin instability is a contributing factor to reproductive wastage in cattle. Semen was obtained from 565 Bos indicus and Bos indicus x taurus bulls from northern and central Queensland aged between 20months and 10years. Samples were subjected to standard semen evaluation2 and aliquots stored in liquid nitrogen until chromatin integrity was determined using the SCSA.3 Samples exposed to the SCSA for 0.5min revealed 4.9% of bulls had a DFI >27% and this increased to 11.5% of bulls with DFI >27% when samples were exposed to the SCSA for 5 min. DFI was significantly correlated with sperm density, mass activity, motility and morphology. Location appeared to have a greater influence on DFI than genotype. Preliminary data from a small sample of bulls would suggest that a relatively high DFI can be repeatable for individual bulls. These findings indicate that sperm chromatin instability occurs in bulls in northern Australia although the prevalence might be considered to be relatively low. The relationship of sperm chromatin instability to the contribution of bulls to embryonic mortality requires further study and likewise the impact on reproductive wastage remains to be determined. Post-partum anoestrus is a primary contributor to low branding rates in Bos indicus cattle herds in the dry tropics of northern Australia [Entwistle, K. W. (1983). Australian Meat Research Committee Review No. 431. To increase branding rates, it was hypothesised that creep feeding for a short period in mid-late lactation during the latter half of the growing season may trigger an earlier onset of post-partum oestrus cycling, just as short-term, high-level, prepartum supplementation can achieve. Two experiments were conducted using Fn Brahman-cross cows (1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 crosses with Beef Shorthorn) which calved from late October to late Januarv. Cows were mated from mid-late Januarv to mid-April. Calves in one treatment in both experiments had ad libitum access to creep feed (calf pellets: 16% crude protein, 10 MJ ME/kg) for 4042 days from late February to early April. In experiment 2, the effects on cow growth and fertility due to supplementation with either cottonseed meal (1.5 kg/day) or molasses with 7.4% (w/w) urea for 49 days late in the dry season before calving ('spike' feeding) were also evaluated. Control cattle were unsupplemented. Creep feed was only consumed at 0.1 and 0.4 kg/day in experiments 1 and 2, respectively. Short-term creep feeding had no consistent effects on cow liveweights, condition, or fertility, or on calf growth and temperaments under extensive grazing conditions during the tropical wet season. A breeding program was established at Swan's Lagoon Beef Cattle Research Station in the dry tropics of northern Queensland to evaluate the productivity of cattle which were genotypically at least one-half Bos indicus. Brahman or Sahiwal bulls were initially mated to B. taurus cows (predominantly Shorthorn) to produce the first filial generation (F1 1/2 Brahman and F1 1/2 Sahiwal). First backcross 314 Brahman and first backcross 314 Sahiwal were derived from crossing F1 1/2 Brahman or F1 1/2 Sahiwal cows to their respective sire breeds. This paper reports on the female reproductive rates and liveweight performance in 2 data sets: 1972-79, F1 1/2 Brahman v. F1 1/2 Sahiwal; 1975-83, first backcross 3/4 Brahman v. first backcross 3/4 Sahiwal. In both data sets, significant differences in fertility (pregnancy rate and calving date) between F1 or first backcross groups were infrequent, and where differences did occur, they were often inconsistent due to cross x year interactions. Bovine spumavirus (BSV) infection is shown to be endemic in some herds in north Queensland. The virus was readily isolated from leukocytes of the majority of mature cattle which were BSV antibody positive (BSV reactors) in the agar gel precipitin test (AGPT). Calves born to dams which were BSV reactors showed no BSV antibody or circulatory leucocyte-associated BSV (CLAB) at birth, but became BSV reactors following ingestion of colostrum, and maintained such evidence of passive immunity until 3–5 months of age. Experimental infection of dams with BSV at 5–7 months of gestation did not cause foetal infection. In groups of young animals at pasture, segregated by age and sex, no evidence of BSV infection occurred, following loss of passive immunity, until 18–24 months of age. At this time, occasional members of some groups (both male and female) became BSV reactors and showed CLAB. At ≈24 months old, following mixing in groups with older cows, and single-sire mating, 34% of heifers became BSV reactors within 10 weeks. A herd survey indicated 85% of 2–3-year-old cows to be BSV reactors; thereafter, the percentage of reactors declined gradually with increasing age. Using BSV grown in cell culture, transmission of infection by throat spray was the most successful route, 7 of 7 (100%) of susceptible cattle becoming BSV reactors within 8 weeks of spraying. Using the intravenous route, only 2 of 5 (40%) susceptible cattle became BSV reactors, and swabbing of cell culture virus into the prepuce or vagina did not result in infection of 4 BSV-susceptible animals. Virus could not be detected by in vitro or in vivo procedures in throat swabs taken from BSV reactors which were CLAB positive. In discussion, epidemiological data are used to support postulates that the spread of BSV infection is associated with intimate contact between individuals, and that the vehicle of infection is saliva. Only saliva from BSV-infected cattle which have no specific antibody is considered to be infectious. Such animals are either those incubating BSV infection before development of an immune response or, more logically to the authors, animals which are BSV tolerant, possibly owing to in utero infection.

Additional data relating to the mechanism of the emulsion copolymerization of styrene and copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile are presented. These results show the influence of varying the emulsifier and of varying the water–monomer ratio upon the relationship between monomer composition and the composition of the initial copolymer molecules formed. The composition of the initial copolymer produced in emulsion is the same as that which would be predicted if polymerization occurred in the oil droplet.

The temperaments of 170 bullocks and 240 cows from 2 commercial properties in northern Queensland were scored by rating their behaviours, especially movement, while they were handled in a crush and pound. High scores indicate poor temperaments. Brahman cross cattle had higher temperament scores than did Shorthorns (P< 0.05). The heaviest cattle tended to have the lowest scores, suggesting that selection for high growth rate may not result in poorer temperament. Horned cattle tended to have lower temperament scores than hornless cattle (P> 0.05), though it is suggested that any advantage to horned cattle may be outweighed by the production and husbandry advantages of the latter. There was no relationship between temperament scores and age, fatness and, in cows, pregnancy status.

The effects on carcass bruising and muscle properties of the temperament scores of 170 bullocks and 240 cows (Brahman cross and Shorthorn) from 2 properties in northern Queensland were studied. Temperaments were scored by rating their behaviours when the cattle were handled in a crush and pound. High scores indicate poor temperaments. The bullocks and cows were respectively transported 740 and 1155 km to abattoirs and slaughtered 5-7 days after mustering. In both experiments, the estimated bruise trim per carcass increased by approximately 0.3 kg per unit increase in movement score for both temperament tests. Cattle with high temperament scores had more bruising along the back and around the tuber coxae and tuber ischii. Muscle samples from cattle with higher temperament scores tended to have higher mean initial yield and peak force shear values, thus indicating that their meat may have been less tender. Neither ultimate pH nor sarcomere length was related to temperament score.
