1. First results of the spectral characterisation of a salt flat in Europe: the Sal 'e Porcus salty pond

Abstract: Sal ‘e Porcus is the largest natural salt flat in Europe, located in Sardinia (Italy) in the southwest region of the Mediterranean area. It spans over an area of more than 3.3 square kilometers. Its homogeneity and size characteristics make it a potentially suitable spot for use as a satellite sensor calibration/validation site. For this purpose, a campaign of spectral, mineralogical and LiDAR data acquisition has been organized in the framework of a dedicated International Remote Sensing Summer School in 2023. Furthermore, the study of this site has been funded by the Italian Spatial Agency through the Project: System for the “COnsOlidation of L2 products from the PRISMA-SG mission (COOL)”.New orbiting hyperspectral sensors such as ASI-PRISMA and EnMAP DLR and near future continuity missions (ASI-PRISMA SG, ESA CHIME) request ground reflectance spectra to rely on the remote sensed data. In this study, the first results of the study of the spectral and LiDAR data acquired on the site are described and discussed, focusing on two main outputs: i) the first release of the spectral library of the minerals of the salt flat; ii) the morphological setting of the surface.The collection of the spectra has been coupled with sediment samples for mineralogical characterization. During these campaigns, UAV-based LiDAR data were acquired. First results show that the topography of the surface changes from west to east, giving the idea of a geological control of this flat area. Moreover, first results of the spectral characterization of this surface using field, UAV and satellite data are discussed.

Abstract: Tests of the T, CP and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system are performed by the direct comparison of the probabilities of a kaon transition process to its symmetry-conjugate. The exchange of in and out states required for a genuine test involving an antiunitary transformation implied by time-reversal is implemented exploiting the entanglement of K0K‾0 pairs produced at a ϕ-factory.A data sample collected by the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb−1 is analysed to study the Δt distributions of the ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π±e∓ν and ϕ→KSKL→π±e∓ν3π0 processes, with Δt the difference of the kaon decay times. A comparison of the measured Δt distributions in the asymptotic region Δt≫τS allows to test for the first time T and CPT symmetries in kaon transitions with a precision of few percent, and to observe CP violation with this novel method.

Abstract: Abstract The ratio R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = Γ(K S → πeν)/Γ(K S → π + π − ) has been measured with a sample of 300 million K S mesons produced in ϕ → K L K S decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e + e − collider. K S → πeν events are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of K L → πeν decays are used to evaluate signal selection efficiencies. With 49647±316 signal events we measure R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = (1.0421 ± 0.0066stat ± 0.0075syst) × 10 −3. The combination with our previous measurement gives R $$ \mathcal{R} $$ = (1.0338 ± 0.0054stat ± 0.0064syst) × 10 −3. From this value we derive the branching fraction B $$ \mathcal{B} $$ (K S → πeν) = (7.153 ± 0.037stat ± 0.044syst) × 10 −4 and f +(0)|V us | = 0.2170 ± 0.009.

Abstract: Abstract CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinoless double $$\beta $$ β decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment, presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background free environment by means of scintillating Li $$_{2}$$ 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 MoO $$_4$$ 4 crystals coupled to light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows us to reject the dominant background of $$\alpha $$ α particles, as proven by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of the first test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a new optimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance the engineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heat detectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 ± 0.2) keV FWHM at the Q-value of $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection of the baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration which features gravity-assisted light detectors’ mounting. In both cases we obtained an improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and we validated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensures an $$\alpha $$ α particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying the requirements for CUPID.

Abstract: Abstract The quantum interference between the decays of entangled neutral kaons is studied in the process ϕ → KSKL → π + π − π + π − , which exhibits the characteristic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations that prevent both kaons to decay into π + π − at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework. The analysed data sample was collected with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE, the Frascati ϕ-factory, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb −1, i.e. to about 1.7 × 109 ϕ → KSKL decays produced. From the fit of the observed ∆t distribution, being ∆t the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses. The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and CPT $$ \mathcal{CPT} $$ symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which — in the most optimistic scenarios — quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models.

Abstract: Abstract The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) in the isotope $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te . In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $$\mathrm {^{130}Te}$$ 130 Te to the first $$0^{+}_2$$ 0 2 + excited state of $$\mathrm {^{130}Xe}$$ 130 Xe : the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ( $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β ). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg $$\times $$ × yr TeO $$_2$$ 2 exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $$\mathrm {S^{0\nu }_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 0 ν = 5.6 × 10 24 yr for the $${0\nu \beta \beta }$$ 0 ν β β decay and $$\mathrm {S^{2\nu }_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ S 1 / 2 2 ν = 2.1 × 10 24 yr for the $${2\nu \beta \beta }$$ 2 ν β β decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $$90\%$$ 90 % C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{0\nu }_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 0 ν > 5.9 × 10 24 yr for the $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β mode and $$\mathrm {(T_{1/2})^{2\nu }_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \, \mathrm {yr}}$$ ( T 1 / 2 ) 0 2 + 2 ν > 1.3 × 10 24 yr for the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $$^{130}$$ 130 Te to excited states and improve by a factor $$\sim 5$$ ∼ 5 the previous results on this process.

Abstract: Abstract The CUPID Collaboration is designing a tonne-scale, background-free detector to search for double beta decay with sufficient sensitivity to fully explore the parameter space corresponding to the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. One of the CUPID demonstrators, CUPID-Mo, has proved the potential of enriched Li $$_{2}$$ 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 MoO $$_4$$ 4 crystals as suitable detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay search. In this work, we characterised cubic crystals that, compared to the cylindrical crystals used by CUPID-Mo, are more appealing for the construction of tightly packed arrays. We measured an average energy resolution of ( $$6.7\pm 0.6$$ 6.7 ± 0.6 ) keV FWHM in the region of interest, approaching the CUPID target of 5 keV FWHM. We assessed the identification of $$\alpha $$ α particles with and without a reflecting foil that enhances the scintillation light collection efficiency, proving that the baseline design of CUPID already ensures a complete suppression of this $$\alpha $$ α -induced background contribution. We also used the collected data to validate a Monte Carlo simulation modelling the light collection efficiency, which will enable further optimisations of the detector.

Abstract: We searched for the μ+μ− decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the e+e−→μ+μ−γISR process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93 fb−1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE ϕ-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible μ+μ− background. A 90% CL limit on the ratio ε2=α′/α between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of 3×10−6–2×10−7 has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in e+e−→π+π−γISR events. The combined 90% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the ρ–ω interference region and excludes ε2 greater than (13−2)×10−7. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8 ×10−7 resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments. Abstract: Abstract Using 1.63 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the KLOE experiment about 7 × 104 K S → π ± e ∓ ν decays have been reconstructed. The measured value of the charge asymmetry for this decay is A S = (−4.9 ± 5.7stat ± 2.6syst) × 10−3, which is almost twice more precise than the previous KLOE result. The combination of these two measurements gives A S = (−3.8 ± 5.0stat ± 2.6syst) × 10−3 and, together with the asymmetry of the K L semileptonic decay, provides significant tests of the CPT symmetry. The obtained results are in agreement with CPT invariance.

Abstract: Abstract The three precision measurements of the cross section σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)) using initial state radiation by the KLOE collaboration provide an important input for the prediction of the hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)). We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range 0.10 < s < 0.95 GeV2 of a μ π + π − = 489.8 ± 1.7 stat ± 4.8 s y s × 10 − 10 $$ {a}_{\mu}^{\pi^{+}{\pi}^{-}}=\left(489.8\pm {1.7}_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm {4.8}_{\mathrm{sys}}\right)\times {10}^{-10} $$ . Abstract: The 1-ton-scale CUORE detector is made of 988 $${{{\hbox {TeO}}}}_2$$ crystals operated as cryogenic bolometers at a working temperature of $$\sim 10{{{\hbox { mK}}}}$$ . In order to provide the necessary cooling power at 4 K stage, a total of five pulse tube (PT) refrigerators are used. The PTs make the cryogenic system reliable and stable, but have the downside that mechanical vibrations at low frequencies (1.4 Hz and related harmonics) are injected into the experimental apparatus. An active noise cancellation technique has been developed in order to reduce such effect by taking advantage from the coherent interference of the pressure oscillations originated by the different PTs. The technique that will be presented consists in controlling the relative phases of the pressure waves running inside the CUORE PT lines, in order to achieve the lowest detector noise. By reducing the power of PT harmonics by a factor up to $$10^4$$ , it drastically suppresses the overall noise RMS on the CUORE detector. In the following, we demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness of the technique, showing that the optimization of the detector noise level is possible in different experimental conditions.

Abstract: The past few decades have seen major developments in the design and operation of cryogenic particle detectors. This technology offers an extremely good energy resolution - comparable to semiconductor detectors - and a wide choice of target materials, making low temperature calorimetric detectors ideal for a variety of particle physics applications. Rare event searches have continued to require ever greater exposures, which has driven them to ever larger cryogenic detectors, with the CUORE experiment being the first to reach a tonne-scale, mK-cooled, experimental mass. CUORE, designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, has been operational since 2017 at a temperature of about 10 mK. This result has been attained by the use of an unprecedentedly large cryogenic infrastructure called the CUORE cryostat: conceived, designed and commissioned for this purpose. In this article the main characteristics and features of the cryogenic facility developed for the CUORE experiment are highlighted. A brief introduction of the evolution of the field and of the past cryogenic facilities are given. The motivation behind the design and development of the CUORE cryogenic facility is detailed as are the steps taken toward realization, commissioning, and operation of the CUORE cryostat. The major challenges overcome by the collaboration and the solutions implemented throughout the building of the cryogenic facility will be discussed along with the potential improvements for future facilities. The success of CUORE has opened the door to a new generation of large-scale cryogenic facilities in numerous fields of science. Broader implications of the incredible feat achieved by the CUORE collaboration on the future cryogenic facilities in various fields ranging from neutrino and dark matter experiments to quantum computing will be examined., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification (CUPID) is a foreseen ton-scale array of Li2MoO4 (LMO) cryogenic calorimeters with double readout of heat and light signals. Its scientific goal is to fully explore the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses in the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo. Pile-up of standard double beta decay of the candidate isotope is a relevant background. We generate pile-up heat events via injection of Joule heater pulses with a programmable waveform generator in a small array of LMO crystals operated underground in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. This allows to label pile-up pulses and control both time difference and underlying amplitudes of individual heat pulses in the data. We present the performance of supervised learning classifiers on data and the attained pile-up rejection efficiency.

Abstract: CUPID is the next generation experiment which will use scintillating cryogenic calorimeters to search for the neutrinoless double β decay. This unobserved process would shed light on the nature of the neutrino, which up to our knowledge could be a Majorana or a Dirac particle, and would give us an important hint to explain the lack of antimatter in the universe. This ambitious search needs a detector with unique characteristics such as an extremely low background level and an excellent energy resolution. CUPID is now in advanced R&D state to optimize the detector design in order to completely exploit the potentialities of scintillating cryogenic calorimeters. In the following I will describe the test performed at the LNGS (Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso) of a single module of the future CUPID detector. In this contribution we present the performance obtained with a novel assembly concept, proving that it matches the requirements for CUPID.

Abstract: The CUORE experiment is a ton-scale array of $$\hbox {TeO}_2$$ TeO 2 cryogenic bolometers located at the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), in Italy. The CUORE detector consists of 988 crystals operated as source and detector at a base temperature of $$\sim 10$$ ∼ 10 mK. Such cryogenic temperature is reached and maintained by means of a custom built cryogen-free dilution cryostat, designed with the aim of minimizing the vibrational noise and the environmental radioactivity. The primary goal of CUORE is the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130 Te , but thanks to its large target mass and ultra-low background it is suitable for the study of other rare processes as well, such as the neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{128}\hbox {Te}$$ 128 Te . This tellurium isotope is an attractive candidate for the search of this process, due to its high natural isotopic abundance of 31.75%. The transition energy at (866.7 ± 0.7) keV lies in a highly populated region of the energy spectrum, dominated by the contribution of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $$^{130}\hbox {Te}$$ 130 Te . As the first ton-scale infrastructure operating cryogenic $$\hbox {TeO}_2$$ TeO 2 bolometers in stable conditions, CUORE is able to achieve a factor $$>10$$ > 10 higher sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay of this isotope with respect to past direct experiments.

Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) is a posited lepton number violating decay whose search is an increasingly active field in modern astroparticle physics. A discovery would imply neutrinos are Majorana particles and inform neutrino physics, cosmology and beyond-standard-model theories. Among the few nuclei where double beta decay (ββ) is allowed, tellurium isotopes stand for their high natural abundance and are currently employed in multiple experiments. The search for 0νββ will provide large exposure data sets in the coming years, paving the way for unprecedented sensitivities. We review the latest rare decay searches in tellurium isotopes and compare past results with theories and prospects from running experiments.

Abstract: We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{130}$Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg$\cdot$yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: $T^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 7.71^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\mathrm{(stat.)}^{+0.12}_{-0.15}\mathrm{(syst.)}\times10^{20}$ yr. This measurement is the most precise determination of the $^{130}$Te 2$\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life to date.

Abstract: The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in the isotope $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$. In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$ to the first $0^{+}_2$ excited state of $\mathrm{^{130}Xe}$: the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ($2\nu\beta\beta$). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg$\times$yr TeO$_2$ exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90\% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $\mathrm{S^{0\nu}_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${0\nu\beta\beta}$ decay and $\mathrm{S^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${2\nu\beta\beta}$ decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $90\%$ C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{0\nu}_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ mode and $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{2\nu}_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $2\nu\beta\beta$ mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $^{130}$Te to excited states and improve by a factor $\sim5$ the previous results on this process., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The CUPID Collaboration is designing a tonne-scale, background-free detector to search for double beta decay with sufficient sensitivity to fully explore the parameter space corresponding to the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. One of the CUPID demonstrators, CUPID-Mo, has proved the potential of enriched Li$$_{2}$$ 2 $$^{100}$$ 100 MoO$$_4$$ 4 crystals as suitable detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay search. In this work, we characterised cubic crystals that, compared to the cylindrical crystals used by CUPID-Mo, are more appealing for the construction of tightly packed arrays. We measured an average energy resolution of ($$6.7\pm 0.6$$ 6.7 ± 0.6 ) keV FWHM in the region of interest, approaching the CUPID target of 5 keV FWHM. We assessed the identification of $$\alpha $$ α particles with and without a reflecting foil that enhances the scintillation light collection efficiency, proving that the baseline design of CUPID already ensures a complete suppression of this $$\alpha $$ α -induced background contribution. We also used the collected data to validate a Monte Carlo simulation modelling the light collection efficiency, which will enable further optimisations of the detector.

Abstract: International audience; Precise characterization of detector time resolution is of crucial importance for next-generation cryogenic-bolometer experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay, such as CUPID, in order to reject background due to pile-up of two-neutrino double-beta decay events. In this paper, we describe a technique developed to study the pile-up rejection capability of cryogenic bolometers. Our approach, which consists of producing controlled pile-up events with a programmable waveform generator, has the benefit that we can reliably and reproducibly control the time separation and relative energy of the individual components of the generated pile-up events. The resulting data allow us to optimize and benchmark analysis strategies to discriminate between individual and pile-up pulses. We describe a test of this technique performed with a small array of detectors at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, in Italy; we obtain a 90% rejection efficiency against pulser-generated pile-up events with rise time of ~15 ms down to time separation between the individual events of 2 ms.

Abstract: A scintillating bolometer based on a large cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal (45 mm side) and a Ge wafer (scintillation detector) has been operated in the CROSS cryogenic facility at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. The dual-readout detector is a prototype of the technology that will be used in the next-generation $0\nu2\beta$ experiment CUPID. The measurements were performed at 18 and 12 mK temperature in a pulse tube dilution refrigerator. This setup utilizes the same technology as the CUORE cryostat that will host CUPID and so represents an accurate estimation of the expected performance. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer shows a high energy resolution of 6 keV FWHM at the 2615 keV $\gamma$ line. The detection of scintillation light for each event triggered by the Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer allowed for a full separation ($\sim$8$\sigma$) between $\gamma$($\beta$) and $\alpha$ events above 2 MeV. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal also shows a high internal radiopurity with $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra activities of less than 3 and 8 $\mu$Bq/kg, respectively. Taking also into account the advantage of a more compact and massive detector array, which can be made of cubic-shaped crystals (compared to the cylindrical ones), this test demonstrates the great potential of cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers for high-sensitivity searches for the $^{100}$Mo $0\nu2\beta$ decay in CROSS and CUPID projects., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract: In the past few years, attention has been drawn to the fact that a precision analysis of two-neutrino double beta decay (2υββ) allows the study of interesting physics cases like the emission of Majoron bosons and possible Lorentz symmetry violation. These processes modify the summed-energy distribution of the two electrons emitted in 2υββ. CUPID is a next-generation experiment aiming to exploit 100Mo-enriched scintillating Li2MoO4 crystals, operating as cryogenic calorimeters. Given the relatively fast half-life of 100Mo 2υββ and the large exposure that can be reached by CUPID, we expect to measure with very high precision the 100Mo 2υββ spectrum shape, reaching great sensitivities in the search for distortions induced by the physics beyond the Standard Model. In this contribution, we present the CUPID exclusion sensitivity for such New Physics processes, as well as the preliminary projected background of CUPID.

Abstract: We report new results from the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in ^{130} Te with the CUORE detector. This search benefits from a fourfold increase in exposure, lower trigger thresholds, and analysis improvements relative to our previous results. We observe a background of (1.38±0.07)×10^{-2} counts/(keV kg yr)) in the 0νββ decay region of interest and, with a total exposure of 372.5 kg yr, we attain a median exclusion sensitivity of 1.7×10^{25} yr. We find no evidence for 0νββ decay and set a 90% credibility interval Bayesian lower limit of 3.2×10^{25} yr on the ^{130} Te half-life for this process. In the hypothesis that 0νββ decay is mediated by light Majorana neutrinos, this results in an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass of 75-350 meV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used.

Its detector consists of 988 TeO2 crystals operating at a base temperature of ∼10 mK. It is the first ton-scale bolometric experiment ever realized for this purpose. Thanks to its large target mass and ultra-low background, the CUORE detector is also suitable for the search of other rare phenomena. In particular the low energy part of the spectra is interesting for the detection of WIMP-nuclei scattering reactions. One of the most important requirements to perform these studies is represented by the achievement of a stable energy threshold lower than 10 keV. Here, the CUORE capability to accomplish this purpose using a low energy software trigger will be presented and described.

Abstract: CUORE is a tonne-scale cryogenic experiment located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that exploits bolometric technique to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Thanks to its very low background and large mass, CUORE is also a powerful tool to study a broad class of phenomena, such as solar axions and WIMP scattering. The ability to conduct such sensitive searches crucially depends on the energy threshold, which has to be kept as low as possible. In this contribution, we show how the trigger algorithm affects the sensitivity to low-energy phenomena and the interpretation of the energy spectrum. In particular, we focus on the impact that the trigger algorithm has on the identification of the coincidence events among different crystals and, consequently, on the reconstruction of the background.

The detector consists of a segmented array of 988 natural TeO2 cubic crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers. The detector construction was completed in August 2016 and data taking started in Spring 2017. In this work, we present a brief description of the bolometric technique for rare events search and the CUORE detector, then we concentrate on the data analysis results. In this respect, we focus on the procedure for data processing and on the first 0νββ results we obtained from a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3kg yr. Next, we illustrate the main background sources and the CUORE background model, from which we obtain the most precise measurement of 130Te 2νββ half-life to date. Finally, we discuss the improvements achieved with 2018 and 2019 detector optimization campaigns and the current perspectives of our experiment.

Abstract: The Optimum Trigger (OT) is based on a threshold algorithm applied on waveforms filtered by exploiting the matched filter technique. The OT trigger thresholds improve by 60-90% with respect to the thresholds obtained with the standard trigger, ranging between ∼ 20 and 100 keV . Low trigger thresholds open the way to Dark Matter searches and to improvements in the neutrinoless double beta decay analysis. Nevertheless, running the OT on CUORE data is demanding from the computational resources point of view. For this reason, the algorithm has been revised and adapted to cope with CUORE data. The work done to implement OT in CUORE and its performances will be discussed.

Abstract: The cryogenic underground observatory for rare events (CUORE) is a cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay ($$0\nu \beta \beta$$0νββ) of $${^{130}\hbox {Te}}$$130Te. The detector consists of an array of $$988\,{\hbox {TeO}_{2}}$$988TeO2 crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. We report the CUORE initial operations and optimization campaigns. We then present the CUORE results on $$0\nu \beta \beta$$0νββ and $$2\nu \beta \beta$$2νββ decay of $${^{130}\hbox {Te}}$$130Te obtained from the analysis of the physics data acquired in 2017.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most massive bolometric experiment searching for neutrino-less double beta (0 ν β β ) decay. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals (742 kg) arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. This paper will describe the CUORE experiment, including the cryostat, and present the detector performance during the first year of running. Additional detail will describe the effort made in improving the energy resolution in the 130Te 0 ν β β decay region of interest (ROI) and the suppression of backgrounds. A description of work to lower the energy threshold in order to give CUORE the sensitivity to search for other rare events, such as dark matter, will also be provided.

Abstract: Aims.The primary aim of this study is to analyse the conformance of usual care patterns for persons with schizophrenia to treatment guidelines in three Italian Departments of Mental Health (DMHs). The secondary aim is to examine possible organisational and structural reasons accounting for variations among DMHs.Methods.Within the framework of the Evaluation of Treatment Appropriateness in Schizophrenia (ETAS) project, 20 consensus quality of care indicators were developed. Ten concerned pharmacological treatment and ten encompassed general care and psychosocial rehabilitation interventions. Indicators were calculated using data from a stratified random sample of 458 patients treated at three DMHs located in North-Eastern, North-Western and Southern Italy. Patients’ data were collected by combining information from medical charts and from a survey carried out by the health care professionals in charge of the patients. Data on the structural and organisational characteristics of the DMHs were retrieved from administrative databases. For each indicator, the number and percentage of appropriate interventions with and without moderators were calculated. Appropriateness was defined as the percentage of eligible patients receiving an intervention conformant with guidelines. Moderators, i.e., reasons justifying a discrepancy between the interventions actually provided and that recommended by guidelines were recorded. Indicators based on a sufficient number of eligible patients were further explored in a statistical analysis to compare the performance of the DMHs.Results.In the overall sample, the percentage of inappropriate interventions ranged from 11.1 to 59.3% for non-pharmacological interventions and from 5.9 to 66.8% for pharmacological interventions. Comparisons among DMHs revealed significant variability in appropriateness for the indicators ‘prevention and monitoring of metabolic effects’, ‘psychiatric visits’, ‘psychosocial rehabilitation’, ‘family involvement’ and ‘work’. After adjusting the patient's gender, age and functioning, only the indicators ‘Prevention and monitoring of metabolic effects’, ‘psychiatric visits’ and ‘work’ continued to differ significantly among DMHs. The percentage of patients receiving appropriate integrated care (at least one appropriate non-pharmacological intervention and one pharmacological intervention) was significantly different among the three DMHs and lower than expected.Conclusions.Our results underscore discrepancies among Italian DMHs in indicators that explore key aspects of care of patients with schizophrenia. The use of quality indicators and improved guideline adherence can address suboptimal clinical outcomes, and has the potential to reduce practice variations and narrow the gap between optimal and routine care.

Abstract: The Optimum Trigger (OT) is based on a threshold algorithm applied on waveforms filtered by exploiting the matched filter technique. The OT trigger thresholds improve by 60 – 90% with respect to the thresholds obtained with the standard trigger, ranging between ~ 20 and 100 keV. Low trigger thresholds open the way to Dark Matter searches and to improvements in the neutrinoless double beta decay analysis. Nevertheless, running the OT on CUORE data is demanding from the computational resources point of view. For this reason, the algorithm has been revised and adapted to cope with CUORE data. The work done to implement OT in CUORE and its performances will be discussed.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts / ( keV kg yr ) . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te &gt, 1.3 &middot, 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2 &nu, &beta, decay with a resulting half-life of T 1 / 2 2 &nu, = [ 7.9 &plusmn, 0.1 ( stat . ) &plusmn, 0.2 ( syst . ) ] &times, 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

The main aim of these introductory notes is exactly to cover these aspects, in order to allow the interested students to appreciate the modern developments and possibly to begin to do research in neutrino oscillations.

Abstract: The three precision measurements of the cross section σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)) using initial state radiation by the KLOE collaboration provide an important input for the prediction of the hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. These measurements are correlated for both statistical and systematic uncertainties and, therefore, the simultaneous use of these measurements requires covariance matrices that fully describe the correlations. We present the construction of these covariance matrices and use them to determine a combined KLOE measurement for σ(e + e − → π + π −γ(γ)). We find, from this combination, a two-pion contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly in the energy range 0.10 < s < 0.95 GeV2 of $$ {a}_{\mu}^{\pi^{+}{\pi}^{-}}=\left(489.8\pm {1.7}_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm {4.8}_{\mathrm{sys}}\right)\times {10}^{-10} $$ a μ π + π − = 489.8 ± 1.7 stat ± 4.8 s y s × 10 − 10 . Abstract: We searched for the $\mu^+\mu^-$ decay of a light vector gauge boson, also known as dark photon, in the $e^+ e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ process by means of the Initial State Radiation (ISR) method. We used 1.93~fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $\phi$-factory. No structures have been observed over the irreducible $\mu^+ \mu^-$ background. A 90\% CL limit on the ratio $\varepsilon^2=\alpha^{\prime}/\alpha$ between the dark coupling constant and the fine structure constant of $ 3\times 10^{-6}-2\times 10^{-7}$ has been set in the dark photon mass region between 519 MeV and 973 MeV. This new limit has been combined with the published result obtained investigating the hypothesis of the dark photon decaying into hadrons in $e^+ e^- \to \pi^+ \pi^- \gamma_{\rm ISR}$ events. The combined 90\% CL limit increases the sensitivity especially in the $\rho-\omega$ interference region and excludes $\varepsilon^2$ greater than $(13-2)\times 10^{-7}$. For dark photon masses greater than 600 MeV the combined limit is lower than 8~$\times\, 10^{-7}$ resulting more stringent than present constraints from other experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

Abstract: Rationale, aims and objectives Early reperfusion is the key to therapeutic success in acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The duration of the process is influenced by various factors which in most of the cases are not easily modifiable. Patients were divided into two groups for hospital access: A – ambulance access to Policlinico emergency room (ER); B – self-referral to ER. Abstract: BackgroundAsthma, rhinitis and eczema often co-occur in children, but their interrelationships at the population level have been poorly addressed. We assessed co-occurrence of childhood asthma, rhinitis and eczema using unsupervised statistical techniques. MethodsWe included 17209 children at 4years and 14585 at 8years from seven European population-based birth cohorts (MeDALL project). At each age period, children were grouped, using partitioning cluster analysis, according to the distribution of 23 variables covering symptoms ever’ and in the last 12months’, doctor diagnosis, age of onset and treatments of asthma, rhinitis and eczema; immunoglobulin E sensitization; weight; and height. We tested the sensitivity of our estimates to subject and variable selections, and to different statistical approaches, including latent class analysis and self-organizing maps. ResultsTwo groups were identified as the optimal way to cluster the data at both age periods and in all sensitivity analyses. The first (reference) group at 4 and 8years (including 70% and 79% of children, respectively) was characterized by a low prevalence of symptoms and sensitization, whereas the second (symptomatic) group exhibited more frequent symptoms and sensitization. Ninety-nine percentage of children with comorbidities (co-occurrence of asthma, rhinitis and/or eczema) were included in the symptomatic group at both ages. The children’s characteristics in both groups were consistent in all sensitivity analyses. ConclusionAt 4 and 8years, at the population level, asthma, rhinitis and eczema can be classified together as an allergic comorbidity cluster. Future research including time-repeated assessments and biological data will help understanding the interrelationships between these diseases.

Abstract: Objective: The northern-Italian region of Piedmont has a total population of 4.3 million. The regional territory is currently divided into 22 local health services, each serving a population not exceeding 300 000 and incorporating a Department of Mental Health. The organization of psychiatric assistance can be described as relatively stable and conforms with the standards imposed by national regulations. Drawing upon previous research experience, and with the support of the relevant regional authorities, our survey implements the methodology developed by the EPCAT team and will eventually embrace about 80% of all local health service areas in this region. Methods: The survey was preceded by a number of preliminary steps including the training of four researchers, inter-rater reliability testing (particularly for the International Classification of Mental Health Care), and the adjustment of the methodology developed by the EPCAT team to facilitate understanding and use of the instrumentation by the psychiatric professionals involved in the data collection. Results: This paper summarizes data on the structure and components of the mental health service in three areas of Piedmont, with special reference to structures funded by the National Health System. Conclusion: Overlooking the imbalances affecting both the resources available for different populations, and the operational profiles of psychiatric agencies of the same type, our data allow an assessment of the descriptive and comparative capabilities of the proposed methodology.

Abstract: TIPS is a percutaneous procedure which diverts blood from the portal to the systemic circulation preventing rebleeding from varices and stopping or reducing the formation of ascites. The choice of the anaesthetic technique is still a matter of debate. Since January 2003, 150 consecutive TIPS were performed using total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA), (propofol/fentanyl or remifentanil), endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation. Sixty-one patients were classified as ASA 2, 73 ASA 3, and 16 ASA 4. According to CHILD classification, 96 patients were in Class A, 48 in Class B, 6 in Class C. Mean duration f the procedure was 100+/-62 min. After TIPS placement Portal vein pressure decreased from 30+/-10 to 14+/-4 mmHg while RAP increased from 8+/-4 to 12+/-6 mmHg. Intraoperative fluid management included mainly crystalloids (750+/-200 ml, 5.4+/-1.5 ml/kg/h). Fresh frozen plasma (median 2 units, range 1-3) was given in 20 patients (13%) if PT INR was >2. Abstract: In this paper a modular structure for grid-connected photovoltaic generation systems is presented. The basic generation unit consists in a quasi-parallel connection of two PV panels, with a dedicated buck-boost (or fly-back) PWM converter. The chopper input voltage, i.e., the PV panels’ voltage, is regulated according to a novel MPPT algorithm, based on a forced small displacement in the working points of the PV panels. Outputs of the several generation units are parallel connected to the dc-bus of a standard active power filter, linked to the electric network. The grid-inverter regulates the dc-bus voltage to a proper fixed value, injecting the power coming from the units into the mains. Each generation unit works as a stand-alone converter, i.e., signal connections among the units or between each unit and the main active filter are not required.

Abstract: The anterior sacral meningocele is the congenital hernia of the thecal sac into the pelvis through a bone defect of the anterior wall of the sacrum. The association of anorectal anomaly, anterior sacral defect and presacral mass, known as Currarino's triad, can be diagnosed during the first decade of life in the eighty per cent of the cases However, in the incomplete syndrome, the symptoms appear in adults. In order to avoid late complications and due to the clear genetic origin of this uncommon pathology, the investigation of the family is of paramount importance for the early diagnosis and treatment. We review the literature and add two cases of anterior sacral meningocele with rectal fistula and incomplete Currarino's syndrome. In one of the cases the pathology is also present in another member of the same family and is complicated with meningitis. The importance of early diagnosis and treatment of these malformations and the need for fammily genetic investigation are discussed.

Abstract: Background— We investigated the association between 9 polymorphisms of genes encoding hemostasis factors and myocardial infarction in a large sample of young patients chosen because they have less coronary atherosclerosis than older patients, and thus their disease is more likely to be related to a genetic predisposition to a prothrombotic state. Methods and Results— This nationwide case-control study involved 1210 patients who had survived a first myocardial infarction at an age of Conclusions— This study provides no evidence supporting an association between 9 polymorphisms of genes encoding proteins involved in hemostasis and the occurrence of premature myocardial infarction or protection against it.
