Anterior cingulate (ACC) hypo-activity is commonly observed in chronically ill schizophrenia patients. However, it is unclear whether this is secondary to persistent illness and/or medication. We examined eight antipsychotic-naïve first-episode patients and matched healthy controls undergoing PET scanning while performing the Stroop task.Group-averaged and single-subject analyses showed ACC activation in both controls and patients, albeit in different sub-regions (paracingulate and cingulate respectively). A direct comparison revealed relative under-activity of the left paracingulate cortex in patients. These findings suggest that the more pervasive hypo-activation observed in chronic patients may be secondary to persistent illness and/or medication.

UA2 EXPERIMENT - Abstract
A measurement of the inclusive cross-section for production of direct photons in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 630 GeV is presented as a function of the photon transverse momentum. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb -1. The results support predictions from QCD theory.

UA2 experiment - Abstract
A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays of W and Z bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order αs2. A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass. © 1991 Springer-Verlag.

UA2 EXPERIMENT - Abstract
The large sample of W→ev events collected by the UA2 experiment at the CERN pp̄ collider between 1988 and 1990 has been used to determine the strong coupling constant α s. From a measurement of the ratio of the production rate of W events with one jet to that with no jets, α s has been extracted to second order in the MS scheme: α s (M W 2) = 0.123 ± 0.0.18 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.).

We used positron emission tomography (PET) with 15O-labelled water to record patterns of cerebral activation in six patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), studied when clinically "off" and after turning "on" as a result of dopaminergic stimulation. They were asked to imagine a finger opposition movement performed with their right hand, externally paced at a rate of 1 Hz. Trials alternating between motor imagery and rest were measured. A pilot study of three age-matched controls was also performed. We chose the task as a robust method of activating the supplementary motor area (SMA), defects of which have been reported in PD. The PD patients showed normal degrees of activation of the SMA (proper) when both "off" and "on." Significant activation with imagining movement also occurred in the ipsilateral inferior parietal cortex (both "off" and when "on") and ipsilateral premotor cortex (when "off" only). The patients showed significantly greater activation of the rostral anterior cingulate and significantly less activation of the left lingual gyrus and precuneus when performing the task "on" compared with their performance when "off." PD patients when imagining movement and "off" showed less activation of several sites including the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) when compared to the controls performing the same task. No significant differences from controls were present when the patients imagined when "on." Our results are consistent with other studies showing deficits of pre-SMA function in PD with preserved function of the SMA proper. In addition to the areas of reduced activation (anterior cingulate, DLPFC), there were also sites of activation (ipsilateral premotor and inferior parietal cortex) previously reported as locations of compensatory overactivity for PD patients performing similar tasks. Both failure of activation and compensatory changes are likely to contribute to the motor deficit in PD.

We studied 24 patients up to 51 hours after ischemic stroke using 18F-fluoromisonidazole positron emission tomography to determine the fate of hypoxic tissue likely to represent the ischemic penumbra. Areas of hypoxic tissue were detected on positron emission tomography in 15 patients, and computed tomography was available in 12 patients, allowing comparison with the infarct volume to determine the proportions of the hypoxic tissue volume that infarcted and survived. The proportion of patients with hypoxic tissue and the amount of hypoxic tissue detected declined with time. On average, 45% of the total hypoxic tissue volume survived and 55% infarcted. Up to 68% (mean, 17.5%) of the infarct volume was initially hypoxic. Most of the tissue "initially affected" proceeded to infarction. We correlated hypoxic tissue volumes with neurological and functional outcome assessed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, Barthel Index, and Rankin Score. Initial stroke severity correlated significantly with the "initially affected" volume, neurological deterioration during the first week after stroke with the proportion of the "initially affected" volume that infarcted, and functional outcome with the infarct volume. Significant reductions in the size of the infarct and improved clinical outcomes might be achieved if hypoxic tissue can be rescued.

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured with PET in seven healthy subjects while they carried out a mental rotation task in which they decided whether alphanumeric characters presented in different orientations were in their canonical form or mirror-reversed. Consistent with previous findings, subjects took proportionally longer to respond as characters were rotated further from the upright, indicating that they were mentally rotating the characters to the upright position before making a decision. We used a parametric design in which we varied the mental rotation demands in an incremental fashion while keeping all other aspects of the task constant. In four different scanning conditions, 10, 40, 70 or 100% of the stimuli presented during the scan required mental rotation while the rest were upright. The statistical parametric mapping technique was used to identify areas where changes in rCBF were correlated with the rotational demands of the task. Significant activation was found in only one area located in the right posterior parietal lobe, centred on the intraparietal sulcus (Brodmann area 7). The experimental literature on monkeys and humans suggests that this area is involved in a variety of spatial transformations. Our results contribute evidence that such transformations are recruited during mental rotation and add to a body of evidence which suggests that the right posterior parietal lobe is important for carrying out visuospatial transformations.

We retrospectively compared ictal technetium 99m hexamethylpropyleneamineoxime single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and interictal 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) in 35 patients with well-lateralized temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Based on SPECT scans the two observers correctly lateralized seizure foci with certainty in 89% of patients; interobserver agreement was excellent. Both observers incorrectly lateralized the seizure focus on two SPECT scans; one error was explained by rapid electroencephalographic spread to the contralateral side and for the other patient, isotope was injected during a brief aura. Based on PET scans, observers correctly lateralized the foci with certainty in 63% and with lesser confidence in 83%; four incorrect lateralizations were made by one observer and none by the other. PET interobserver disagreement was explained by differences between observers in weighting the relative hypometabolism in medial and lateral temporal regions. The detection rate for PET was lower in the absence of structural imaging abnormalities (60 vs 87%). PET yielded correct lateralizations in the 2 patients for whom SPECT interpretation was difficult. We conclude that both ictal SPECT and interictal PET are sensitive methods for the lateralization of TLE, but SPECT can be interpreted with greater certainty and is more sensitive when magnetic resonance imaging findings are negative. False lateralization is rare with ictal SPECT and can be explained when interpreted in conjunction with electroclinical data. Both investigations have complementary roles when localization is difficult.

Fischer 344 rats were exposed by inhalation to 0, 1, 5 or 50 ppm dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) vapor 6 hr/day, 5 days/week for 13 weeks, followed by a 13-week recovery period. Animals were euthanized following completion of exposure at 2, 6, or 13 weeks and at postexposure weeks 4 or 13. No mortality, overt signs, body weight changes, hematologic or clinical chemistry values were related to DCPD exposure. In the high-exposure male rats, relative liver weights were significantly increased but with no accompanying histopathologic changes. Exposure to DCPD produced adverse kidney effects in male, but not female, rats as evidenced by the excretion of epithelial cells in the urine. Histologic changes were localized to the proximal tubules of the kidney and included increased accumulation of protein droplets, regenerative epithelium, and the presence of intraluminal proteinaceous material. In addition, several alterations in renal function were observed. Urinary Na+ excretion rates were decreased and urinary K+ excretion rates were increased throughout the exposure period; however, glucose was not present in the urine, and creatinine clearance was normal. The ability of the kidney to concentrate urine was also impaired. After the recovery period, many of the treatment-related kidney effects were not observed, including the presence of hyaline droplets in the proximal tubules and epithelial cells in the urine. These findings indicate an overall low degree of systemic toxicity following subchronic inhalation exposure of dicyclopentadiene at exposure levels up to 50 ppm. The only effect that was observed was a male rat-specific nephropathy that is characteristic of the hyaline droplet nephropathy produced by a diverse group of compounds.

A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Centre is currently being established at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne. The Centre has recently purchased a Siemens Model 951/31 PET scanner and an Ion Beam Applications (IBA) Model 10/5 cyclotron with associated targetry and automated radiochemistry modules. The initial areas of clinical investigation at the Austin Hospital will be heart and brain studies using 18Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and 13Nitrogen-ammonia (13NH3). The heart studies will concentrate on determining myocardial viability in patients following infarction whilst studies of epileptic patients will involve determination of the epileptic focus in the brain. A description of the major technical instrumentation is given together with an overview of the radiopharmaceutical production processes and the initial program of clinical investigations to be undertaken.

Acute exposures of rats, mice, dogs and monkeys to nitrogen trifluoride have been carried out and median lethal concentrations were determined for rats and mice. Confirmative evidence was obtained that the immediate effects of acute exposure are caused by extensive methemoglobin formation and resulting anoxia. Dogs surviving exposure to 9600 ppm for 60 min exhibit a Heinz body anemia with red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit decreasing 33% to minimum values by the end of the second week postexposure. Recovery of hematologic values to preexposure levels is attained in 40 days. In dogs, the anemia caused by a dose level of 120,000 ppm-min is severe enough to invalidate that dose as an emergency exposure limit (EEL). At 30,000 ppm-min, however, no detectable anemia occurs, and no other toxic effects are discernible. The results of experiments conducted at subacute levels justify recommending an upward revision of the EEL to 30,000 ppm-min from the proposed National Academy of Science, National Research Council value of 3000 ppm-min.

The preclinical rationale for the use of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in combination with leucovorin has been well described in a number of articles [1]. Briefly, the formation and stability of the ternary complex formed between an active metabolite of 5-FU (FdUMP), thymidylate synthase (TS), and the reduced folate 5-10-methylene tetrahydrofolate is highly dependent on the concentration and polyglutamated state of the folate [2,3]. The addition of exogenous folate has been shown to enhance ternary complex formation, and thereby enzyme inhibition, in in vitro and in vivo investigations [4,5]. Inhibition of TS results in thymidylate deficiency and presumably cytotoxicity due to a diminished ability of cells to replicate and repair DNA. In light of the encouraging experience using 5-FU with leucovorin for the treatment of metastatic colon cancer [1], we sought to test this combination for the therapy of metastatic breast cancer wherein 5-FU is known to be an active agent. The objectives of our study were twofold: 1) to assess the efficacy of 5-FU combined with leucovorin for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, and 2) to determine the effect of leucovorin on the binding of FdUMP to TS in serial tumor samples obtained from patients undergoing therapy. This report represents a preliminary assessment of the efficacy and toxicity of the 5-FU and leucovorin combination and the biochemical studies relevant to the interaction of 5-FU with TS.

Current EEL values for monomethylhydrazine (MMH), a rocket propellant, have been based on minimal information consisting primarily of acute effects. The acute effects of MMH are seen only at lethal or supralethal dose levels and consequently a series of experiments were conducted to define an atmospheric concentration of MMH which would produce no irreversible injury and no clinical evidence of central nervous system (CNS) injury. Dogs, monkeys, rats and mice were exposed to MMH vapors for periods of 15, 30, and 60 minutes to concentration x time (CT) doses of 900 ppm-minutes. The 900 ppm-minute CT dose of MMH, which was 25% of the LC concentration for the most susceptible animal species tested, included a safety margin below the lowest dose reported to produce marginal decrement of performance in trained cats and monkeys. In view of the negative finding in all species exposed to the 900 ppm-minute CT dose level of MMH, we recommend an upward revision of current emergency exposure limits (EEL) values.

The decays W --> ev and Z --> e+e- are studied in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The products of production cross section and branching ratio are measured as sigma(W)e = 682 +/- 12 +/- 40 pb and sigma(Z)e = 65.6 +/- 4.0 +/- 3.8 pb. The results are in good agreement with O (alpha(s)2) calculations of the production cross sections. Many systematic effects cancel in the ratio, R = 10.4 +/- 0.6(0.7) +/- 0.3, which can be used to give an indirect measurement of the total width of the W boson: GAMMA(W) = 2.10 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.09 GeV. The width gives a limit on the top quark mass, m(top) > 53 GeV (95% CL), which is independent of the top decay mode.

Results on the cross section for the production of electron pairs in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV are presented. The measured value is sigma = 405 +/- 51 (syst.) +/- 84 (syst.) pb, in the invariant mass interval 10 < m < 70 GeV. The results are compared to recent theoretical calculations which include O(alpha(s)2) QCD contributions. The comparison of these data with those of lower energy experiments show approximate scaling as a function of the variable square-root tau = m/ square-root s.

The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

SCINTILLATING FIBER DETECTOR, STRUCTURE-FUNCTION F2(X - Abstract
A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV is presented. The x-range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q2 range is between 280 GeV2 and 3670 GeV2. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb-1. The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q2 values.

CHARGED WEAK BOSON ,UA2 EXPERIMENT ,ANOMALOUS MAGNETIC-MOMENT ,SCINTILLATING FIBER DETECTOR - Abstract
The process ppBAR --> e-nu-gamma + X is studied as square-root s = 630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters-kappa and lambda which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WW-gamma coupling. We find kappa = 1(-2.2)+2.6 and lambda = 0(-1.8)+1.7 and their 95% confidence limits -3.5 < kappa < 5.9 and -3.6 < lambda < 3.5. The results are model independent and in good agreement with the standard model values, kappa = 1 and lambda = 0.

A measurement of the cross-sections for single and double prompt photon production in p p interactions at s = 630 GeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 13.2 pb−1. The results are in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD. The signal from double prompt photon production has a statistical significance of 4.3 standard deviations.

The process t-H+b, H+ --> tau+nu, tau+ --> hadrons + nuBar and its charge conjugate are investigated by seeking an excess in number of observed theta's beyond that expected from the standard model under the assumption of e-tau-universality. No such excess is found and new regions of the m(H)-m(t) plane are excluded for B(H+ --> tau(nu) = 0.5 and 1.O. In addition, the ratio of couplings of the tau and eto the W is precisely measured as g-tau(W)/g-e(W) = 1.02 +/- 0.04(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.).

A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN ppBAR Coolider at square-root s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb-1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

The W and Z bosons masses, m(W) and m(Z), are measured using samples of W --> ev and Z --> e+e- decays observed in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. The ratio is found to be m(W)/m(Z) = 0.8813 +/- 0.0036 +/- 0.0019. This gives a value sin2 theta(w) = 0.2234 +/- 0.0064 +/- 0.0033, and in combination with precise m(Z) measurements from LEP yields m(W) = 80.35 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.17 GeV. This result is in good agreement with other experiments, and with the standard model for a top quark mass lighter than 250 GeV.

UA2 EXPERIMENT ,SCINTILLATING FIBER DETECTOR - Abstract
Results are given on a search for the decay W+/- --> pi+/--gamma with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. No signal for such a process is observed and upper limits on the ratio R = GAMMA(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma)/GAMMA(W+/- --> e+/--nu) < 4.9 x 10(-3) and on the branching ratio BR(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma) < 5.4 x 10(-4) are derived at 95% confidence level.

A search for supersymmetric decays of the Z boson into a pair of scalar electrons or winos (partners of the electron and W boson) has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p collider at s = 630 GeV . The analysis of the sample of electron pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb −1 , shows no evidence for such exotic decays. The 90% confidence level lower mass limits obtained exclude selectron masses up to e40 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light photino, and wino masses up to 45 GeV/ c 2 in the case of a light scalar neutrino.

A search has been made with the upgraded UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at s =630 GeV for multi-jet events with large transverse momentum imbalance in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.4 pb−1. Under the assumption that the photino is the lightest stable supersymmetric (SUSY) particle, the data have been used to deduce lower limits in a minimal SUSY model for the squark ( m q ) and the gluino ( m g ) masses. The 90% CL bounds are m g > 74 GeV independent of m g , m g > 79 GeV independent of m g , and and m> 106 GeV for m q =m q =m .

The upgraded UA 2 detector has collected data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 7.5 pb−1 from\(\bar pp\) collisions at a centre of mass energy of 630 GeV during 1988 and 1989. A search has been performed for the production and decay of the top quark (t) or a member of a hypothetical fourth family (b′). No evidence has been found for such processes. Using the expected rates for production and decay branching ratios from the Standard Model, this implies that the top quark mass is greater than 69(71) GeV/c2, and that theb′ mass is greater than 54(57) GeV/c2, at 95(90)% confidence.
