1. Effect of snow-covered ground albedo on the accuracy of air temperature measurements

Abstract

Solar radiation is one of the main factors which introduce significant deviations between thermometers reading and true air temperature value. Techniques to protect the sensors from direct radiative influence have been adopted almost since the beginning of meteorological observations. Reflected radiation from a snow-covered surface can also cause extra warming to thermometers hosted in solar shields, which are not always optimised to protect the sensors from this further radiative heat transfer. This phenomenon can cause errors in near-surface temperature measurements results, with a relevant impact on the quality of data records and series. This study experimentally evaluates the effect of reflected radiation from a snow-covered surface on the accuracy of air temperature measurements. The investigation is based on the evaluation of temperature differences between pairs of identical instruments, positioned above ground covered by natural vegetation, with one instrument in snow-free conditions and the other above a snow-covered surface, at the same time and at the same site. The work involved a representative number of sensors and shields, in terms of different typologies, technologies and engineering solutions, from different manufacturers. A mountain site with acceptable field conditions, offering long-lasting snow presence to maximise data availability, was selected to perform the experiment. Quantities of influence, such as relative humidity, wind speed and direction and solar radiation (global and reflected), were constantly measured. The main findings of this work show that none of the involved instruments were immune to the extra heating due to the snow-reflected radiation. Excluding nighttimes and days of high wind or low incident radiation, the differences among sensors positioned above natural soil and identical ones exposed to snow albedo ranged up to more than 3 ∘C. Solar screens with forced ventilation showed a partially reduced effect compared to most of the naturally ventilated ones. A full data analysis is reported here, together with complete results and uncertainties.

Abstract

Abstract Non‐catching type gauges are the emerging class of in situ precipitation measurement instruments. For these instruments, rigorous testing and calibration are more challenging than for traditional gauges. Hydrometeors characteristics like particle size, shape, fall velocity and density must be reproduced in a controlled environment to provide the reference precipitation, instead of the equivalent water flow used for catching‐type gauges. They are generally calibrated by the manufacturers using internal procedures developed for the specific technology employed. No agreed methodology exists, and the adopted procedures are rarely traceable to internationally recognized standards. The EURAMET project 18NRM03 ‘INCIPIT’ on ‘Calibration and accuracy of non‐catching instruments to measure liquid/solid atmospheric precipitation’, funded by the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR), was initiated in 2019 to investigate calibration and accuracy issues of non‐catching measuring instruments used for liquid/solid atmospheric precipitation measurement. A survey of the existing models of non‐catching type instruments was initially performed and this paper provides an overview and a description of their working principles and the adopted calibration procedures. Both literature works and technical manuals disclosed by manufacturers are summarized and discussed, while current limitations and metrological requirements are identified.

Abstract

Abstract Atmospheric air temperature values are fundamental in meteorology and climate studies. To achieve high accuracy in the measurements, the features, characteristics and performances of instruments are of high importance. This study focuses on the most commonly used temperature sensors within automatic weather stations, with a specific focus on evaluating the self‐heating effect. Self‐heating in automatic weather stations originates not only from the temperature sensor itself but also from the electrical components housed together within. This effect introduces extra heating in the system, causing biases and errors in temperature records. The conducted measurements show the temperature change in the close vicinity of the thermometers over a time period of more than 66 hr with electric current and voltage supply values recommended by the respective sensor manufacturers. Furthermore, the temperature changes after increasing the voltage supply levels up to 80% of the maximum voltage recommended by the manufacturer are presented as well. The results of overall self‐heating indicated a +0.07°C increase in temperature for the tested sensors when using the manufacturers’ recommended electric current and voltage supply. However, the use of elevated voltage levels shows a considerably higher temperature increase in the vicinity of the temperature sensors. In the present study, the measured difference from the initial measured temperature can be as high as +0.32°C.

Abstract

Microbiological and chemical-physical characterization of Halal beef fresh and minced meat, vacuum-packaged and stored at +2°C and +8°C, were examined, at 0, 7, 14 and 21 days, to evaluate the shelf-life. Lactic Acid Bacteria and Coliforms were higher in samples stored at +8 °C, particularly in minced meat. Pseudomonas were the most prevalent flora in all the products, and the contamination level, above 4 log10 cfu/g, were reached at 7 days in all the samples and was maintained during the study. The shelf-life can be extended reducing the storage temperature (< +2°C), and improving the packaging conditions.

Abstract

Goat farming is a very important resource, expecially in marginal and unlikely exploitable Mediterranean areas. They are extensively reared, mainly for milk production and for suckling kids meat. The meat from adult goats instead is not profitable, because of its very low commercial value. The transformation of the Sarda goat (native breed) meat in ripened products (ham) would contribute to safeguard the Sardinian goat supply chain. In the present study, in order to characterize the Sarda breed goat dry ham, five batches (L1–L5), processed in a traditional plant, were analyzed. The chemical-physical characteristics were determined in the following stages: fresh ham (MP), after salting (S), after drying (E) and at the end of ripening (P). The microbiological parameters were determined in MP and in P. The dynamics of pH during processing were similar to those of cured meat products (in P: 6.58±0.26). The aw value decreased during the processing up to 0.79±0.03. Regarding the microbiological parameters, in P the coagulase negative Staphylococci were the prevalent flora (4.38±1.08 Log10 cfu/g), followed by the Lactic acid bacteria (2.46±1.00). The Moulds and Yeasts were not constant and the presence of pathogens was not highlighted.

Abstract

In this study, we monitored the different stages of ovine sausage production for detecting the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in food matrices, the equipment and the environment. A total of 32 isolates were characterized using serotyping and PFGE. Five virulence genes (actA, hlyA, plcB, prfA, iap) were detected by PCR. In this study, furthermore, we determined the susceptibility of L. monocytogenes isolates to 20 antimicrobial agents using Sensititre plates. All isolates were resistant to oxacillin and tigecycline, but susceptible to the other antibiotics. All isolates resulted PCR-positive for the investigated virulence genes. PFGE identified two different pulsotypes. Five isolates, marked as type A and belonging to the serotype 1/2a, were isolated just from one batch samples whereas the type B (n=28), belonging to the serotype 1/2b, was isolated from five different food batches and from the floor drain.

Abstract

The subspecies of the biological species concept with incomplete reproductive isolation versus the incipient sibling species of the phylogenetic species concept with permeable reproductive barrier are still applied side by side in the everyday practice of taxonomy. Both terms refer to the same organisms diverged mostly in allopatry with various stages of repro-ductive isolation. Question remained: how human ranks these entities organised by nature? The reliable ranking of living hierarchies is retarded and even obscured by the suppressed state of taxonomy. Disappointing scenario: the science of biodiversity is stuck in century old macromorphologies without innovation of fine phenomics and without exploring its high-tech and high-throughput potential. The empirical science of taxonomy is “modernised” by the neutral DNA marker industry diverting the epistemological focus from empirical to virtual. Virtuality of noumenon is used to camouflage the phenomenon of the adverse environmental processes, the wasteful byproducts of the profit oriented liberalized economy. The sensual reality of species and the accelerated species extinction is effectively masked by the virtual sciences of the abstract: numbers, data, statistics, algorithms, equations, models and ideas. To understand the birth of a young incipient species we have briefly reviewed the postmodern development of the unified phylogenetic species concept. (1) The reality of species and higher phylogenetic taxa. (2) The biological and phylogenetic species. (3) How to delineate phylogenetic species? (4) The infinite versus finite division of phylogenetic species. (5) The construct of the unified species concept. (6) Taking subspecies and race out of science. Without recognition of incipient siblings of the phylogenetic species the biodiversity remains under-estimated and the pharisaic anti-science ranking of humans remains with us. The discovery of speciation trait that is the sexual adaptive structures in reproductive barrier building, which are detectable by fine phenomics, gives perspective to find the finite division, the dynamic initial split in the continuous process of diversification. The speciation traits produced by integrative organisation, as opposed to competitive selection, help to unify the operational criteria of the biological species concept that is the speciation by reproductive isolation with the general concept of phylogenetic species that is the causal process of the separately evolving metapopulation lineages. The subspecies and racial ranking is untenable anymore, we suggest taking subspecies and race out of science: the finite division of the initial split detected by speciation traits is the birth of the phylogenetic incipient sibling species. There is no “subspecies”and “races”, as there is no “subindividual” in the biological organisation. In the present caddisfly taxonomy the subspecies remained as a valid status in the Potamophylax cingulatus caddisfly species group. With a clear distinction between the neutral and adaptive traits in the P. cingulatus species group and applying the subtle and stable shape divergences in phallic fine structures we have proposed to change the taxonomic status of subspecies to incipient sibling phylogenetic species rank: Potamophylax alpinus stat. nov., P. depilis stat nov., P. ibericus stat. nov., P. inermis stat. nov., reinstated the species status of P. cingulatus stat. restit. and we have described three new species: P. fesus Oláh, P. portugalicus Oláh et Szczesny, and P. transalpinus Oláh & Coppa, spp. nov.

Abstract

In this paper, the dynamics of electrons emitted by a spherical object when the total charge of the system is constant is studied in detail. In particular, the condition for which the total electron charge presents damped oscillations is deduced rigorously by considering a perturbation with respect to the steady-state solution. The results obtained can be of utility in simulating the expansion of a spherical plasma by separating the ion and electron time scales.

Abstract

In the last few years we have described over 70 new incipient sibling limnephild species applying the discovered Trichoptera speciation traits of the paraproct and paramere for species recognition and delimitation. In this revision on Drusinae subfamily, comprising 177 species, we have applied these subtle, but rapid and stable speciation traits and described 49 new sibling species from the “well studied” European mountain ranges. Discussing the theoretical background we have elaborated and adapted a new character state ranking system of phenomics to revise the long-neglected taxonomy of the Drusinae subfamily and synonymised the Cryptothrix, Monocentra, Metanoea, Leptodrusus, Anomalopterygella, Hadimina genera with the Drusus genus. These old genera of artificial constructs were established exclusively by divergences of secondary sexual traits known already to have only species level ranking value. According to our new character ranking system in the Drusinae subfamily, beside the Drusus genus, only the Ecclisopteryx genus has been retained having robust generic level divegences of paraproct loss and ancestral duplication of spine organising centre on the paramere pattern. Speciation trait function of the peg-packed surface on the paraproct head in Drusus genus moved to the gonopod apices and integrated into variously shaped stimulatory organ in the Ecclisopteryx genus. In the Drusus genus the ancestral divergence of the single spine organising centre has integrated 11 species groups with remarkably stable paramere spine pattern. Based upon ancestral divergences in the paraproct architecture we have differenciated 28 species complexes inside the 11 species groups. The delineation of the 163 mostly incipient siblings species, inside the 28 species complexes with 44 new Drusus species, was based primarily on the divergences of speciation trait, that is in the stimulatory head shape of the apical arms on the dorsal branches of the paraproct. In the Ecclisopteryx genus with 14 species we have established two independent lineages both with a single species, as well as two species complexes with five new species applying the speciation trait of the genus, that is the shape divergence of the stimulatory organ on the dorsoapical surface of the gonopods. Based on the Darwinian natural selection, we do not understand how the discovered 70+49 new European incipient phylogenetic species of limnephilid caddisflies have been evolved in the isolated sky island habitats of high mountain ranges. This isolation induced speciation represents a challenge to the mechanistic reductionist concept of the natural selection. Our first trial to extract information from various disciplines to answer this question is presented in a brief theoretical discourse: (1) rethinking the status of natural selection towards postdarwinism; (2) teleology or teleonomy; (3) limits and potentials in understanding reality; (4) organisation of universe by integration; (5) what are and how the organising forces are powered to work in the emerging energy mechanisms; (6) divergence by integration; (7) divergence in isolation; (8) reproductive isolation by sexual selection; (9) shape divergence; (10) speciation traits; (11) generic ranking characters. Assessing the limits and potentials, the humility and hybris attitudes towards understanding reality, we hypothesise an integrative power of organisation, instead of simplistic natural selection, that works both in isolated and sympatric populations to maintain the integer state of the integrated autonomic entities against mutations, permutations, transmutations and perturbations. The permanent flux of these adverse, neutral or advantegous external and internal effects generates and gives rise to a responsive and balancing integrative mechanisms with comparative magnitude and multitude. This permanently balancing organisation process develops and drives a large number of interactions along various patterns of supervenient emergent mechanisms in order to integrate them into an oscillating autonomy. In isolation of the sky-islands on high altitudes, the divergences of new taxa are the adaptive autonomic byproducts of this integrative organisation. Integration and not the selection is the real force mechanism that harmonises the concerted flux of stochastic processes into reproductive isolation by sexual selection. The primacy of integration is clearly demonstrated by empirical evidences in the causes and consequences of the integrated speciation traits. Any kind of selection, artificial, natural, social or sexual, is only an emergent perturbating mechanism forced to integrate into the autonomy of an entity. This is how the entanglement of the quantum world and any supervenient integer work together through energeticism of the interactive realism. This is a must in the ontic, epistemic and semantic structural realism.

Abstract

We empirically test the relation between the SFR(LIR) derived from the infrared luminosity, LIR, and the SFR(Ha) derived from the Ha emission line luminosity using simple conversion relations. We use a sample of 474 galaxies at z = 0.06 - 0.46 with both Ha detection (from 20k zCOSMOS survey) and new far-IR Herschel data (100 and 160 {\mu}m). We derive SFR(Ha) from the Ha extinction corrected emission line luminosity. We find a very clear trend between E(B - V) and LIR that allows to estimate extinction values for each galaxy even if the Ha emission line measurement is not reliable. We calculate the LIR by integrating from 8 up to 1000 {\mu}m the SED that is best fitting our data. We compare SFR(Ha) with the SFR(LIR). We find a very good agreement between the two SFR estimates, with a slope of m = 1.01 \pm 0.03 in the SFR(LIR) vs SFR(Ha) diagram, a normalization constant of a = -0.08 \pm 0.03 and a dispersion of sigma = 0.28 dex.We study the effect of some intrinsic properties of the galaxies in the SFR(LIR)-SFR(Ha) relation, such as the redshift, the mass, the SSFR or the metallicity. The metallicity is the parameter that affects most the SFR comparison. The mean ratio of the two SFR estimators log[SFR(LIR)/SFR(Ha)] varies by approx. 0.6 dex from metal-poor to metal-rich galaxies (8.1 < log(O/H) + 12 < 9.2). This effect is consistent with the prediction of a theoretical model for the dust evolution in spiral galaxies. Considering different morphological types, we find a very good agreement between the two SFR indicators for the Sa, Sb and Sc morphologically classified galaxies, both in slope and normalization. For the Sd, irregular sample (Sd/Irr), the formal best-fit slope becomes much steeper (m = 1.62 \pm 0.43), but it is still consistent with 1 at the 1.5 sigma level, because of the reduced statistics of this sub-sample.

Abstract

We identify 42 "candidate groups" lying between 1.8 < z < 3.0 from a sample of 3502 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the zCOSMOS-deep redshift survey within this same redshift interval. These systems contain three to five spectroscopic galaxies that lie within 500 kpc in projected distance (in physical space) and within 700 km s–1 in velocity. Based on extensive analysis of mock catalogs that have been generated from the Millennium simulation, we examine the likely nature of these systems at the time of observation, and what they will evolve into down to the present epoch. Although few of the "member" galaxies are likely to reside in the same halo at the epoch we observe them, 50% of the systems will have, by the present epoch, all of the member galaxies in the same halo, and almost all (93%) will have at least some of the potential members in the same halo. Most of the candidate groups can therefore be described as "proto-groups." A crude estimate of the overdensities of these structures is also consistent with the idea that these systems are being seen as they assemble. We also examine present-day halos and ask whether their progenitors would have been seen among our candidate groups. For present-day halos between 1014 and 1015 M ⊙ h –1, 35% should have appeared among our candidate groups, and this would have risen to 70% if our survey had been fully sampled, so we can conclude that our sample can be taken as representative of a large fraction of such systems. There is a clear excess of massive galaxies above 1010 M ⊙ around the locations of the candidate groups in a large independent COSMOS photo-z sample, but we see no evidence in this latter data for any color differentiation with respect to the field. This is, however, consistent with the idea that such differentiation arises in satellite galaxies, as indicated at z < 1, if the candidate groups are indeed only starting to be assembled.

Abstract

We present the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function (MF) up to z~1 from the zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample. We investigate the total MF and the contribution of ETGs and LTGs, defined by different criteria (SED, morphology or star formation). We unveil a galaxy bimodality in the global MF, better represented by 2 Schechter functions dominated by ETGs and LTGs, respectively. For the global population we confirm that low-mass galaxies number density increases later and faster than for massive galaxies. We find that the MF evolution at intermediate-low values of Mstar (logM, Revised version, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

Summary Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is an autosomal dominantly inherited malformation syndrome characterized by anal, renal, limb, and ear anomalies. Recently, we showed that mutations in the putative zinc finger transcription factor gene SALL1 cause TBS. To determine the spectrum of SALL1 mutations and to investigate the genotype-phenotype correlations in TBS, we examined 23 additional families with TBS or similar phenotypes for SALL1 mutations. In 9 of these families mutations were identified. None of the mutations has previously been described. Two of these mutations are nonsense mutations, one of which occurred in three unrelated families. Five of the mutations are short deletions. All of the mutations are located 5′ of the first double zinc finger (DZF) encoding region and are therefore predicted to result in putative prematurely terminated proteins lacking all DZF domains. This suggests that only SALL1 mutations that remove the DZF domains result in TBS. We also present evidence that in rare cases SALL1 mutations can lead to phenotypes similar to Goldenhar syndrome. However, phenotypic differences in TBS do not seem to depend on the site of mutation.

(Abridged) We analyze the environments and galactic properties (morphologies and star-formation histories) of a sample of 153 close kinematic pairs in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1 identified in the zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample of galaxies. Correcting for projection effects, the fraction of close kinematic pairs is three times higher in the top density quartile than in the lowest one. This translates to a three times higher merger rate because the merger timescales are shown, from mock catalogues based on the Millennium simulation, to be largely independent of environment once the same corrections for projection is applied. We then examine the morphologies and stellar populations of galaxies in the pairs, comparing them to control samples that are carefully matched in environment so as to remove as much as possible the well-known effects of environment on the properties of the parent population of galaxies. Once the environment is properly taken into account in this way, we find that the early-late morphology mix is the same as for the parent population, but that the fraction of irregular galaxies is boosted by 50-75%, with a disproportionate increase in the number of irregular-irregular pairs (factor of 4-8 times), due to the disturbance of disk galaxies. Future dry-mergers, involving elliptical galaxies comprise less than 5% of all close kinematic pairs. In the closest pairs, there is a boost in the specific star-formation rates of star-forming galaxies of a factor of 2-4, and there is also evidence for an increased incidence of post star-burst galaxies. Although significant for the galaxies involved, the "excess" star-formation associated with pairs represents only about 5% of the integrated star-formation activity in the parent sample. Abstract

We investigate the properties and the environment of radio sources with optical counterpart from the combined VLA-COSMOS and zCOSMOS samples. The advantage of this sample is the availability of optical spectroscopic information, high quality redshifts, and accurate density determination. By comparing the star formation rates estimated from the optical spectral energy distribution with those based on the radio luminosity, we divide the radio sources in three families, passive AGN, non-passive AGN and star forming galaxies. These families occupy specific regions of the 8.0-4.5 $\mu$m infrared color--specific star formation plane, from which we extract the corresponding control samples. Only the passive AGN have a significantly different environment distribution from their control sample. The fraction of radio-loud passive AGN increases from ~2% in underdense regions to ~15% for overdensities (1+delta) greater than 10. This trend is also present as a function of richness of the groups hosting the radio sources. Passive AGN in overdensities tend to have higher radio luminosities than those in lower density environments. Since the black hole mass distribution is similar in both environments, we speculate that, for low radio luminosities, the radio emission is controlled (through fuel disponibility or confinement of radio jet by local gas pressure) by the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, while in other cases it is determined by the structure (group or cluster) in which the galaxy resides., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, A&A in press

Abstract

The identities of the main processes triggering and quenching star-formation in galaxies remain unclear. A key stage in evolution, however, appears to be represented by post-starburst galaxies. To investigate their impact on galaxy evolution, we initiated a multiwavelength study of galaxies with k+a spectral features in the COSMOS field. We examine a mass-selected sample of k+a galaxies at z=0.48-1.2 using the spectroscopic zCOSMOS sample. K+a galaxies occupy the brightest tail of the luminosity distribution. They are as massive as quiescent galaxies and populate the green valley in the colour versus luminosity (or stellar mass) distribution. A small percentage (, 17 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

The expansion of laser-irradiated clusters or nanodroplets depends strongly on the amount of energy delivered to the electrons and can be controlled by using appropriately shaped laser pulses. In this paper, a self-consistent kinetic model is used to analyze the transition from quasineutral, hydrodinamic-like expansion regimes to the Coulomb explosion (CE) regime when increasing the ratio between the thermal energy of the electrons and the electrostatic energy stored in the cluster. It is shown that a suitable double-pump irradiation scheme can produce hybrid expansion regimes, wherein a slow hydrodynamic expansion is followed by a fast CE, leading to ion overtaking and producing multiple ion flows expanding with different velocities. This can be exploited to obtain intracluster fusion reactions in both homonuclear deuterium clusters and heteronuclear deuterium-tritium clusters, as also proved by three-dimensional molecular-dynamics simulations., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion

Abstract

Identification of iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS) gene mutations in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II, Hunter syndrome) allows fast and reliable carrier detection in females, relatives of the patients. We describe here a study on a Hunter family where, after the identification of the primary genetic defect in the patients, we identified carriers unambiguously among at-risk female relatives and excluded such status in other subjects. This is an example of direct, DNA based diagnosis.

Finally, the most advanced characterization techniques are presented including new methods developed by the authors.

Abstract

Leukocyte alkaline phosphatase (LAP) from cord blood was characterized by means of acrylamide gel disc electrophoresis, eneuraminidase sensitivity, heat inactivation, L-phenylalanine and L-homoargÍnine in hibition and EDTA inactivation. No differences were found between the LAP of cord blood and that of children in acrylamide gel disc electrophoresis, neuraminidase sensitivity, heat inactivation and L-homoarginine inhibition. Acrylamide gel disc electrophoresis of the agarose purified enzyme and EDTA inhibition studies suggest that the increase of LAP in cord blood depends on an increase of the catalytic efficiency of the enzyme.

Abstract

We describe a family with two male members showing an X/Y translocation (karyotype: 46,Y,der(X)t(X;Y)(p22;q11]. At physical examination both patients showed ichthyosis, mental retardation and dysmorphic features. Chondrodysplasia punctata and short stature were present in one case. Direct DNA analysis, using a steroid sulphatase cDNA probe, was performed in one patient, his mother and sister, both carriers of the translocation. We found that the translocated region of the Y chromosome includes the steroid sulphatase pseudogene. These results suggest that in our patients the X/Y translocation may be derived from a recombinational event between homologous regions located on the short arm of the X chromosome and the long arm of the Y chromosome. Clinical and molecular studies on the present family add further information for the construction of a tentative physical map of the distal Xp.

Abstract

The intracellular "Na+ activity" was measured in erythrocytes of normotensive subjects (46), in essential hypertensive patients (18), in their children (20) and in patients with secondary hypertension (8). In normotensive subjects without a genetic trait of hypertension intracellular "Na+ activity" was 7.3 +/- 0.8 mmol/l, in secondary hypertensive patients was 7.5 +/- 0.6 mmol/l, in essential hypertensive patients was 10.9 +/- 1.1 mmol/l and in their children was 8.6 +/- 2.1 mmol/l. In this group (children) it was possible to differentiate between 2 population, the 1 degree with height intracellular "Na+ activity" (8); the 2 degrees with normal intracellular "Na+ activity".

Abstract

The measurements of intracellular "Na+ activity" was performed in 10 ml of heparinized venous blood. First the blood was three times washed in isotonic magnesium chloride solution (114 mmol/l). Thereby the buffy coat was removed. Then the microhematrocrit was taken for packet cell volume determination. After the erythrocytes were lysed by ultrasound. Sodium "Na+ Activity" is measured in the hemolysate by Ion-Selective electrode. With this method all "pipetting" operations are eliminated and for the "Na+ activity" determination was used ion-selective electrode with an indirect measurements, which is less influenced by the matrix. Reference intervals determined for a healthy population were 7.3 +/- 0.6 mmol/l.

Abstract

The object of this work is to present the foraminifera associations found in seven cores of holocoenic period from the continental shelf of southern Sardinia. The percentage of benthos is always definitely greater than 82,5 % . The benthic species are very numerous. There are no extinct species or species which present a paleoclimatic interest. The top-core samples collected from the infralittoral zone present two different associations based on its granulometry (sand and silt). The species most commonly found in sand are : Cibicides lobatulus, Ammonia beccarii, Rosalina globularis, Asterigerinata mamilla, Gavelinopsis praegeri, Buccella frigida granulata, Eponides répandus, Quinqueloculina aspera, etc. The species most commoly found in silt are Rosalina globularis, R. obtusa, Cibicides lobatulus. The presence of Posidonia oceanica may lead to a greater peercentage of some species (i.e. Nubecularia lucifuga, Rosalina bradyï). They may be referred respectively to the biocenose of well calibrated fine sands ("SFBC" of Peres & Picard, 1964) and to the biocenose of the "herbier" of Posidonie ("HP" of Peres & Picard, 1964). The species most commoly found in the top-core samples of the circalittoral zone are Asterigerinata mamilla, Cibicides pseudoungerianus, C. lobatulus, Neoconorbina terquemi, Ammonia beccarii, Spiroplectammina wrighti, etc. The planktonic foraminifera are mostly represented by Globorotalia truncatulinoides, Globigerina bulloides, Globorotalia inflata, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, Globigerinoides trilobus. The association may be attributed, with great probability, to the biocenose of the coastal detritus ("DC" of Peres & Picard, 1964). Along the cores, the associations present characteristics similar to those of the surface samples., Ce travail rend compte des associations de foraminifères de sept carottes d'âge holocène, provenant delà plate-forme continentale de la Sardaigne méridionale. Dans les carottes, le pourcentage du benthos est nettement supérieur (82,5 %) ; il n'y a pas d'espèces éteintes ou présentant un intérêt paléo-climatique. Dans les échantillons du sommet des carottes appartenant à l'étage infralittoral, on distingue deux types d'associations en fonction de la granulométrie (sables et silt). Abstract

Platelet alkaline phosphatase from normal subjects and from trisomy 21 Down's syndrome patients was characterized by means of acrylamide gel disc electrophoresis, neuraminidase sensitivity, heat inactivation, l -phenylalanine and l -homoarginine inhibition. The platelet enzyme from normal and mongoloid children showed the same biophysical and biochemical characteristics. The biochemical properties of platelet alkaline phosphatase were compared with those already found for leukocyte alkaline phosphatase. Alkaline phosphatase derived from these two blood cells showed similar properties. These results suggested that within platelets and leukocytes there exists only a single enzyme. The independent variation of platelet and leukocyte alkaline phosphatase activity in Down's syndrome is therefore probably not caused by differences in structural or regulator genes between these blood cells. Cellular differences in genetic and environmental interactions or tissue specific variations in enzyme regulation should be considered.

Abstract

In 364 serum samples of cord blood, infants, children, and adults alkaline phosphatase was characterized by means of L-phenylalanine inhibition, L-homoarginine inhibition, heat inactivation, acrylamide gel disc electrophoresis, and neuraminidase sensitivity. The increase of serum alkaline phosphatase in cord blood serum and in infant's and children's serum in comparison with adult levels was attributed mainly to the bone enzyme and in smaller proportion to the intestinal enzyme. Using acrylamide gel disc electrophoresis, an increase in the frequency of subjects with an intestinal alkaline phosphatase band with increasing age values was found.
