Abstract

For photovoltaic cells to convert solar into electric energy is probably the most interesting research challenge nowadays. A good efficiency of these devices has been obtained by using inorganic semiconductor materials. On the other hand, manufacture processes are very expensive in terms of both materials and techniques. For this reason organic-based photovoltaic (OPV) cells are attracting the general attention because of the possible realization of more economical devices. Organic materials are abundant and easily handling. Unfortunately OPV cells efficiency is significantly lower than that of inorganic-based devices, representing a big point of weakness at the present. This is mainly due to the fact that organic semiconductors have a much higher band gap with respect to inorganic semiconductors. In addition, OPV cells are very susceptible to oxygen and water. In this paper we will describe some of the different approaches to the understanding and improving of organic photovoltaic devices.

Abstract

This paper presents an automatic system for fibers extraction from brooms, realized by Calabrian High Tech S.r.l. in the framework of PON MATRECO. Base of this system is a suspended rail from which a series of hoists are hanging, pulled by a chain. Six work stations are devoted to perform each a specific task, from hanging the plants manually to bars, placing them in position and pushing a button, to immerge them in a maceration bath held at 80° where the plants must be kept for about 20 min, to lift them, then rinse, detach fibers and finally discard the plants to restart the process. The entire cycle, controlled by a PC, will need only one person in operation, even if at the moment, being yet in an experimental phase, more people are involved. Broom is an endemic plant in Calabria, with good mechanical properties and long fibers, but fibers extraction was up to now extremely labor intensive, thus too expensive. Other fibers extraction, such as those of hemp or flax, require simpler treatments, even if the sequence of operations described in this paper, with minor modifications, could be adopted to treat all of them, obtaining long fibers. A patent application has been filed on this plant scheme, taking into account a number of possible variations [7], and a second patent is about to be deposited.

Abstract

In this work, potential use of Spanish broom fibers for removing from aqueous solutions heavy metal ions such as copper Cu(II) and lead Pb(II) was investigated. The fibers were extracted by DiCoDe (Digestion-Compression-Decompression) process changing experimental conditions. Morphology of fibers was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and chemical composition, as well as the carboxylic group content, was determined by conventional methods. Various initial concentrations of heavy metal ions were studied to explore potential sorption on cellulose fibers. The results suggest that cellulose fibers, extracted by different conditions of DiCoDe process, are capable of sorbing metal ions.

Abstract

Chitosan is a natural cationic biopolymer produced fron N-deacetylation of chitin. Chitosan’s unique characteristics make it potentially useful in a variety of applications suche as a drug carrier, wound healing, implantation and gene therapy because of the following advantages: chitosan is inexpensive, non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible. Vancomycin hydrochloride was used as a model peptide drug: following oral administration, peptide drugs suffer from poor intestinal absorption due to the susceptibility to the proteolytic enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract and poor membrane permeability. The absorption of peptide drugs could be enhanced in the colon because of the lower proteilytic activity and longer residence time. In this study, chitosan tartrate microparticles were prepared using spray-drying technique. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy were carried out to understand respectively the morphology and the structural interations between chitosan and tartaric acid. The release of vancomycin was also evaluated.

Abstract

Recently, microsphere technology has been applied in designing formulations for nasal drug delivery. Drugs which are not absorbed from such dosage forms, stand better chance of absorption when formulated in “gelling” microspheres made by using biocompatible materials e.g. starch, gelatin, albumin, chitosan and dextran. In particular, chitosan (CH) is a positively charged linear polysaccharide that is bioadhesive and able to interact strongly with the nasal epithelial cells and the overlaying mucus layer thereby providing a longer contact time for drug. Poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic anhydride) (PVM/MA) is widely used for pharmaceutical purposes. It is a biodegradable polyanhydride and could be an appropiate copolymer for the preparation of particulate dosage forms with bioadhesive or mucoadhesive properties. The aim of this work was firstly to entrap propranolol hydrochloride (PH) within CH-PVM/MA microparticles prepared by spray-drying technique and secondly to characterize the formulation in terms of morphology, size, swelling properties, drug loading and release.

Abstract

13C and 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to characterize the in vivo kinetics of glucose metabolism and intracellular ATP and 2,3-DPG concentrations in erythrocytes obtained from beta-thalassaemia intermedia, heterozygous beta-thalassaemic and normal individuals and maintained in suspension. Except for an upfield chemical shift in the 2P and 3P resonance of 2,3-DPG in the thalassaemia intermedia erythrocytes, the 31P spectra were comparable between all three blood types, showing similar concentrations of ATP (from 4.5 to 5.2 mumol/g Hb) and 2,3-DPG (from 17.2 to 19.7 mumol/g Hb). However, the profile of glucose metabolism was quite different in beta-thalassaemia intermedia erythrocytes, whereas glucose was consumed at a rate of 0.089 +/- 0.035 fmol/cell/h, significantly higher than that of normal (0.032 +/- 0.018 fmol/cell/h; P = 0.01) and heterozygous (0.025 +/- 0.004 fmol/cell/h; P = 0.01) erythrocytes. This near 3-fold faster rate of glucose metabolism in the thalassaemia intermedia erythrocytes could not be accounted for by any increase in glucose flux via the Embden-Meyerhof pathway, since no significant difference in 3-13C-lactate synthesis was observed among the three blood types (in units of fmol/cell/h, normal, 0.021 +/- 0.013; heterozygous, 0.021 +/- 0.006; beta-thalassaemia intermedia 0.045 +/- 0.025). These results reflect an accelerated rate of glucose metabolism in thalassaemia intermedia erythrocytes because the contribution of reticulocytes to this altered pattern of metabolism could be excluded. As the only other route of glucose metabolism in erythrocytes is the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), these results indicate that the PPP is more active in beta-thalassaemia intermedia erythrocytes, perhaps as a consequence of their elevated intracellular oxidative state.

Abstract

The paper reports results of both surface charge vs pH measurements and of electrokametie determinations performed on suspension of monoelmic zirconia. The time length os the pre-conditioning of the oxide in the electrolyte (KNO3) appears to affect the value both of the c. !i. p. and of the i. e. p. and to modify the pattern of charge curves. The transition from »fast« to »slow« titrations also introduces remarkable differences in the degree of hysteresis and in the overal trend of charge curves. A common interpretation of these phenomena is proposed considering the high temperature of preparation of the samples and the possible consequent removal of the surface chemisorbed water.

37. Photoelectrochromic switchable nematic emulsions.

Abstract

Switchable nematic emulsions are composite systems formed by liquid-crystal droplets dispersed in a fluid, homogeneous, monomer matrix. These systems can be switched from an opaque to a transparent state by application of a suitable alternating electric field. An electrochromic device provides a reversible and visible change in its transmittance as a result of either oxidizing or reducing electrochemical processes. A photochromic device provides a reversible and visible change in its transmittance as the result of a single chemical transformation of the species induced by suitable electromagnetic radiation. These devices have been proven to be useful for a variety of electro-optical applications as switchable windows, electromagnetic shutters, and displays. Our article reports preliminary results on trifunctional devices based on nematic emulsions that host electrochromic and photochromic guest molecules. These trifunctional films are able to modulate the light transmission (with an external alternating electric field) and to change their color (with static field or UV light) by means of suitable electric fields or electromagnetic radiation. Abstract

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) are composite materials consisting of micron-sized droplets of liquid crystal dispersed in a polymer matrix. The easiest method to obtain a PDLC film is the polymerisation-induced phase separation process (PIPS). The liquid crystal is mixed with a monomer of low molecular weight and polymerisation is induced by heat or UV light. The increasing molecular weight of the polymer causes the phase separation of liquid crystal from the polymer matrix as micron-sized droplets. In this work, we have studied the structural changes induced in the polymer matrix of a PDLC after the PIPS process by deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance. Two different selectively deuterated monomers have been synthesized and investigated: isobutyl methacrylate (IBMA-d 2) and methyl methacrylate (MMA-d 3). The main results were the disappearance of the characteristic two-site hop in poly-IBMA, due to liquid crystal molecules, and the lack of unreacted MMA molecules in the liquid crystal droplets. In this last case, we found that it is possible to confine temporarily the unreacted MMA molecules within liquid crystal droplets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

15 patients with aneurysm of ascending aorta associated with aortic valve incompetence has been treated by the replacement of the aortic valve and ascending aorta with reimplantation of the right coronary artery in 8 patients and both coronary arteries in 7. The operative mortality was 13% (2 patients). The follow up interval ranged from 6 months to three years (mean 20 months) and in all 13 patients there was an improving of functional class. A post-operative angiography was performed in 6 patients and in all of them was demonstrated the patency of the neoostia, a minimum paravalvular leak in one patient, and a pseudoaneurysm in another one. Proving the necessity of complete replacement of aneurysmal aorta, the Authors discuss the technique adopted with particular reference to the problem of reimplantation of the coronary arteries.

Abstract

The Authors describe two cases in which the outlet of the left ventricle was recreated by means of a bypass with a valve tube. The first is a case of correct levo-transposition of the great vessels with atresia of the pulmonary, in which a valve tube was applied between the inverted left ventricle and the right branch and trunk of the pulmonary. The second is a case of "long" fibrous subvalvular aortic stenosis, a relapse from former correction of membranous subaortic stenosis, in which bypass was applied between the left ventricle and the ascending aorta. This latter method, adopted by McGoon, is held by the Authors to be easier to apply and more physiological in its hemodynamic effects. The clinical and instrumental results were good in both cases. The hemodynamic and cardioangiographic controls carried out in the second case, 4 months after the surgical operation, showed the normal functioning of the prosthesis, an outflow equal to 60.3% of the total capacity through the bypass, and the ample neostomy of the left ventricle in systolic phase.

Abstract

The Authors report a case of aneurysm of the ascending aorta in Marfan syndrome, with fatal outcome (2 months after the onset of the symptoms), caused neither by dissection nor by rupture of the aorta, but by serious myocardial involvement due to anoxic damage and acute volume overload of left ventricle. The Authors describe the possible mechanisms of this evolution and point out the usefulness of the identification of this uncommon evolution for a useful and opportune surgical therapy.

Abstract

Mitral insufficiency due to ruptured chordae tendinaee is not easily diagnosed by M-mode Echocardiography: of the several patterns that have been described, none has proven quite reliable. Two-dimensional study, on the other hand, seems to be more useful in that it permits to identify an abnormal movement of the involved leaflet which appears quite characteristic. Out of a group of 14 patients we were able to diagnose chordal rupture in 5 proven cases. Further investigation is necessary to ascertain specificity and sensitivity if this echo pattern.

Abstract

Because Cross-Sectional Echocardiography offers the advantage of correct spatial orientation, it is said to permit a more exact localization of the level of the outflow tract obstruction and a determination of the nature of the lesion. Our experience confirms that B-Mode Echo is more reliable in diagnosing an extensive sub-valvular narrowing, while the existence of a thin sub-valvular membrane can also be detected by M-Mode examination. The latter has moreover proven very useful in that it records indirect signs of obstruction, such as a mid-systolic closure of the aortic cusps. We therefore suggest that both methods should be employed in studying these patients.
