The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report describes an increase in the number and intensity of marine heatwaves (MHWs) and a decrease in marine cold spells (MCSs) in the global ocean. However, these reported changes are not uniform on a regional to local basis, and it remains unknown if coastal areas follow the open-ocean trends. Surface ocean temperature measurements collected by satellites (from 1982–2022) and 13 coastal buoys (from 1990–2022) are analyzed in the northeastern Atlantic and three subregions: the English Channel, Bay of Brest and Bay of Biscay. The activity metric, combining the number of events, intensity, duration and spatial extent, is used to evaluate the magnitude of these extreme events. The results from in situ and satellite datasets for each of the studied regions are quite in agreement, although the satellite dataset underestimates the amplitude of activity for both MHWs and MCSs. This supports the applicability of the method to both in situ and satellite data, albeit with caution on the amplitude of these events. Also, this localized study in European coastal northeastern Atlantic water highlights that similar changes are being seen in coastal and open oceans regarding extreme events of temperature, with MHWs being more frequent and longer and extending over larger areas, while the opposite is seen for MCSs. These trends can be explained by changes in both the mean of and variance in sea-surface temperature. In addition, the pace of evolution and dynamics of marine extreme events differ among the subregions. Among the three studied subregions, the English Channel is the region experiencing the strongest increase in summer MHW activity over the last 4 decades. Summer MHWs were very active in the English Channel in 2022 due to long events, in the Bay of Biscay in 2018 due to intense events and in the Bay of Brest in 2017 due to a high occurrence of events. Winter MCSs were the largest in 1987 and 1986 due to long and intense events in the English Channel. Finally, our findings suggest that at an interannual timescale, the positive North Atlantic Oscillation favors the generation of strong summer MHWs in the northeastern Atlantic, while low-pressure conditions over northern Europe and a high off the Iberian Peninsula in winter dominate for MCSs. A preliminary analysis of air–sea heat fluxes suggests that, in this region, reduced cloud coverage is a key parameter for the generation of summer MHWs, while strong winds and increased cloud coverage are important for the generation of winter MCSs.

The French coast of the eastern English Channel (ECC) is classified as a potential eutrophication zone by the Oslo and Paris (OSPAR) Convention and as moderate to poor according to the phytoplankton quality element of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). It is regularly affected by Phaeocystis globosa bloom events, which have detrimental effects on the marine ecosystem, economy, and public health. In this context and to improve our observation strategy, MAREL Carnot, a multi-sensor oceanographic station, was installed in the eastern English Channel in 2004 at the Carnot wall in Boulogne-sur-Mer. The aim of this station was to collect high-frequency measurements of several water quality parameters to complement conventional low-resolution monitoring programs. The purpose of this paper is to describe the MAREL Carnot dataset and show how it can be used for several research objectives. MAREL Carnot collects high-frequency, multi-parameter observations from surface water as well as meteorological measurements and sends the data in near real-time to an onshore data center. In this paper, we present several physical, chemical, and biological parameters measured by this station. We also demonstrate that the MAREL Carnot dataset can be used to assess environmental or ecological statuses and conduct research in the field of marine phytoplankton ecology and oceanography. In addition, we show that this dataset may indirectly aid in improving European environmental management strategies. Decadal time series of chlorophyll a concentrations sampled at high and low frequencies are explored to study climate-induced impacts on the processes inducing interannual variations in the initiation of the phytoplankton growing period (IPGP) in early spring. We specifically detail the IPGP in two contrasting coastal temperate ecosystems under the influence of rivers highly rich in nutrients: the Bay of Brest and the Bay of Vilaine. In both coastal ecosystems, we observed a large interannual variation in the IPGP influenced by sea temperature, river inputs, light availability (modulated by solar radiation and water turbidity), and turbulent mixing generated by tidal currents, wind stress, and river runoff. We show that the IPGP is delayed by around 30 d in 2019 in comparison with 2010. In situ observations and a one-dimensional vertical model coupling hydrodynamics, biogeochemistry, and sediment dynamics show that the IPGP generally does not depend on one specific environmental factor but on the interaction between several environmental factors. In these two bays, we demonstrate that the IPGP is mainly caused by sea surface temperature and available light conditions, mostly controlled by the turbidity of the system before first blooms. While both bays are hydrodynamically contrasted, the processes that modulate the IPGP are similar. In both bays, the IPGP can be delayed by cold spells and flood events at the end of winter, provided that these extreme events last several days.

In the north-east Atlantic Ocean, the Bay of Biscay is an intersection between a coastal constrained dynamics (wide continental shelf and shelf break regions) and an eastern boundary circulation system. In this framework, the eddy kinetic energy is 1 order of magnitude lower than in western boundary systems. To explore this coastal complex system, a high-resolution (1 km, 100 vertical sigma layers) model experiment including tidal dynamics over a period of 10 years (2001–2010) has been implemented. The ability of the numerical environment to reproduce main patterns over interannual scales is demonstrated. Based on this experiment, the features of the (sub)mesoscale processes are described in the deep part of the region (i.e. abyssal plain and continental slope). A system with the development of mixed layer instabilities at the end of winter is highlighted. Beyond confirming an observed behaviour of seasonal (sub)mesoscale activity in other regions, the simulated period allows exploring the interannual variability of these structures. A relationship between the winter maximum of mixed layer depth and the intensity of (sub)mesoscale related activity (vertical velocity, relative vorticity) is revealed and can be explained by large-scale atmospheric forcings (e.g. the cold winter in 2005). The first submesoscale-permitting exploration of this 3-D coastal system shows the importance of (sub)mesoscale activity in this region with its evolution implying a potentially significant impact on vertical and horizontal mixing.

An eddy-permitting coupled ecosystem-circulation model including dissolved organic matter is used to estimate the dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) supply sustaining primary production in the subtropical north Atlantic Ocean. After an analysis of the coupled model performances compared to the data, a sensitivity study demonstrates the strong impact of parameter values linked to the hydrolysis of particulate organic nitrogen and remineralisation of dissolved organic nitrogen on surface biogeochemical concentrations. The physical transport of dissolved organic nitrogen contributes to maintain the level of primary production in this subtropical gyre. It is dominated by the meridional component. We estimate a meridional net input of 0.039 molN m−2 yr−1 over the domain (13–35° N and 71–40° W) in the subtropical gyre. This supply is driven by the Ekman transport in the southern part and by non-Ekman transport (meridional current components, eddies, meanders and fronts) in the northern part of the subtropical gyre. At 12° N, our estimate (18 kmolN s−1) confirms the estimation (17.9 kmolN s−1) made by Roussenov et al. (2006) using a simplified biogeochemical model in a large scale model. This DON meridional input is within the range (from 0.05 up to 0.24 molN m−2 yr−1) (McGillicuddy and Robinson, 1997; Oschlies, 2002) of all other possible mechanisms (mesoscale activity, nitrogen fixation, atmospheric deposition) fuelling primary production in the subtropical gyre. The present study confirms that the lateral supply of dissolved organic nitrogen might be important in closing the N budget over the north Atlantic Ocean and quantifies the importance of meridional input of dissolved organic nitrogen.

Rossby waves appear to have a clear signature on surface chlorophyll concentrations which can be explained by a combination of vertical and horizontal mechanisms. In this study, we investigate the role of the different physical processes in the north Atlantic to explain the surface chlorophyll signatures and the consequences on primary production, using a 3-D coupled physical/biogeochemical model for the year 1998. The analysis at 20 given latitudes, mainly located in the subtropical gyre, where Rossby waves are strongly correlated with a surface chlorophyll signature, shows the important contribution of horizontal advection and of vertical advection and diffusion of inorganic dissolved nitrogen. The main control mechanism differs according to the biogeochemical background conditions of the area. The surface chlorophyll anomalies, induced by these physical mechanisms, have an impact on primary production. We estimate that Rossby waves induce, locally in space and time, increases (generally associated with the chlorophyll wave crest) and decreases (generally associated with the chlorophyll wave trough) in primary production, ~±20% of the estimated background primary production. This symmetrical situation suggests a net weak effect of Rossby waves on primary production.

The purpose of neurometabolic screening is the earliest possible detection of treatable disorders. The disorders currently offered to general population screening are phenylketonuria, congenital hypothyroidism, galactosemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, cystic fibrosis, biotinidase deficiency, maple syrup urine disease, sickle cell disease, homocystinuria. The methods used for these evaluations are mass spectroscopy and genetic testing.

We report on 2 children with Fabry disease who had radiologic evidence of microvascular central nervous system involvement despite the clinical absence of renal, cardiac, or cerebral manifestations. This suggests that treatment with enzyme replacement therapy may be necessary early in the disease to avoid irreversible complications.

A 2 month old male infant was found to have mild growth retardation, prominent forehead, low set ears, low nasal bridge, rounded facies, cleft palate, webbed neck, shawl scrotum, and absent right kidney. The propositus, a product of a consanguineous marriage, had extremely rare abnormal cytogenetic findings. His karyotype contained three derivative chromosomes that originated from a familial translocation, t(16;18)(p13.3;p11.2) carried by both parents. Based on parental studies, the infant's unbalanced karyotype was defined as: [46,XY,t(16;18)(p13.3;p11.2), der(18)t(16;18).ish t(16;18)(16ptel-,16qtel+,18ptel+,wcp16+,wcp18+;16ptel+,18ptel-,wcp16+,wcp18+), der(18)t(16;18)(16ptel+,18ptel-,wcp16+,wcp18+)]. We describe this child at 2 months of age with a follow up at 4 1/2 years, exhibiting a mixed clinical picture with features of both 18p- and partial trisomy 16p13.3.

Background and Purpose: Fabry disease is an X-linked inherited disorder resulting from a deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A. Cerebrovascular disease in Fabry disease includes small-vessel disease and larger-vessel ectasia in a predominantly posterior distribution. We assessed transcranial Doppler (TCD) blood flow velocities in naive and enzyme-treated Fabry patients., Methods: TCD was used to noninvasively examine patients with Fabry disease for abnormal cerebral blood flow velocities. TCD measurements were also made during CO2 retention by breathholding to examine cerebrovascular vessel reactivity. Twenty-six patients were enrolled in a 6-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of enzyme replacement therapy consisting of biweekly intravenous alpha-galactosidase A infusions, with a subsequent 18-month follow-up in an open-label trial. Statistical analysis consisted of applying a mixed-effects ANOVA model for correlated outcomes., Results: Peak velocity, mean velocity, pulsatility index, and resistance index were found to be significantly higher in patients compared with control subjects. When the individual vessels were considered, elevated flow velocities were found in the middle cerebral M1 branch and the posterior cerebral artery. Enzyme replacement therapy significantly decreased peak, mean, and end-diastolic velocities and flow acceleration at the 18-month follow-up time point., Conclusions: Patients with Fabry disease have elevated cerebral blood flow velocities. These velocities significantly improved with enzyme replacement therapy.
