The Carina Nebula is one of the major massive star-forming regions in the Galaxy. Its relatively nearby distance (2.35 kpc) makes it an ideal laboratory for the study of massive star formation, structure, and evolution, both for individual stars and stellar systems. Thanks to the high-quality spectra provided by the Gaia-ESO survey and the LiLiMaRlin library, as well as Gaia EDR3 astrometry, a detailed and homogeneous spectroscopic characterization of its massive stellar content can be carried out. Aims. Our main objective is to spectroscopically characterize all massive members of the Carina Nebula in the Gaia-ESO survey footprint to provide an updated census of massive stars in the region and an updated estimate of the binary fraction of O stars. Methods. We performed accurate spectral classification using an interactive code that compares spectra with spectral libraries of OB standard stars, as well as line-based classic methods. We calculated membership using our own algorithm based on Gaia EDR3 astrometry. To check the correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the rotational velocity, we used a semi-automated tool for the line-broadening characterization of OB stars based on a combined Fourier transform and goodness-of-fit methodology. Results. The Gaia-ESO survey sample of massive OB stars in the Carina Nebula consists of 234 stars. The addition of brighter sources from the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey and additional sources from the literature allows us to create the most complete census of massive OB stars so far in the region. It contains a total of 316 stars, with 18 of them in the background and 4 in the foreground. Of the 294 stellar systems in Car OB1, 74 are of O type, 214 are of nonsupergiant B type, and 6 are of WR or nonO supergiant (II to Ia) spectral class. We identify 20 spectroscopic binary systems with an O-star primary, of which 6 are reported for the first time, and another 18 with a B-star primary, of which 13 are new detections. The average observed double-lined binary fraction of O-type stars in the surveyed region is 0.35, which represents a lower limit. We find a good correlation between the spectroscopic n-qualifier and the projected rotational velocity of the stars. The fraction of candidate runaways among the stars with and without the n-qualifier is 4.4% and 2.4%, respectively, although nonresolved double-lined binaries could be contaminating the sample of fast rotators. © The Authors 2023., This paper is based mainly on data products from spectroscopic observations made with ESO Telescopes at the Paranal Observatory under programme ID 188.B-3002. The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a large public spectroscopic survey that was carried out using the multi-object FLAMES spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. The survey provides accurate radial velocities, stellar parameters, and elemental abundances for ~115 000 stars in all Milky Way components. Aims. In this paper, we describe the method adopted in the final data release to derive lithium equivalent widths (EWs) and abundances. Methods. Lithium EWs were measured using two different approaches for FGK and M-type stars, to account for the intrinsic differences in the spectra. For FGK stars, we fitted the lithium line using Gaussian components, while direct integration over a predefined interval was adopted for M-type stars. Care was taken to ensure continuity between the two regimes. Abundances were derived using a new set of homogeneous curves of growth that were derived specifically for GES, and which were measured on a synthetic spectral grid consistently with the way the EWs were measured. The derived abundances were validated by comparison with those measured by other analysis groups using different methods. Results. Lithium EWs were measured for ~40 000 stars, and abundances could be derived for ~38 000 of them. The vast majority of the measures (80%) have been obtained for stars in open cluster fields. The remaining objects are stars in globular clusters, or field stars in the Milky Way disc, bulge, and halo. Conclusions. The GES dataset of homogeneous lithium abundances described here will be valuable for our understanding of several processes, from stellar evolution and internal mixing in stars at different evolutionary stages to Galactic evolution. © E. Galactic star clusters are known to harbour a significant amount of binary stars, yet their role in the dynamical evolution of the cluster as a whole is not comprehensively understood. We investigated the influence of binary stars on the total mass estimate for the case of the moderately populated Galactic star cluster NGC 225. The analysis of multi-epoch radial velocities of the 29 brightest cluster members, obtained over two observational campaigns, in 1990-1991 and in 2019-2020, yields a value of binary fraction of α = 0.52 (15 stars out of 29). Using theoretical isochrones and Monte Carlo simulations we found that the cluster mass increases at least 1.23 times when binaries are properly taken into account. By combining Gaia EDR3 photometric data with our spectroscopic observations, we derived estimates of NGC 225 fundamental parameters foras follows: mean radial velocity = − 9.8 ± 0.7 km s−1, log (τ)=8.0-8.2 dex, distance D = 676 ± 22 pc, and colour excess E(B − V) = 0.29 ± 0.01 mag.

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100 000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for the homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper introduces the survey results. Methods. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus, all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202 000 spectra of 115 000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. © G. Gilmore et al. 2022. Conclusions. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022. C.; Zaggia, S., Context. The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a large public spectroscopic survey that has collected, over a period of six years, spectra of ~105 stars. This survey provides not only the reduced spectra, but also the stellar parameters and abundances resulting from the analysis of the spectra. Aims. The GES dataflow is organised in 19 working groups. Working group 13 (WG13) is responsible for the spectral analysis of the hottest stars (O, B, and A type, with a formal cutoff of Teff > 7000 K) that were observed as part of GES. We present the procedures and techniques that have been applied to the reduced spectra in order to determine the stellar parameters and abundances of these stars. Methods. The procedure used was similar to that of other working groups in GES. A number of groups (called Nodes) each independently analyse the spectra via state-of-the-art techniques and codes. Specific for the analysis in WG13 was the large temperature range covered (Teff ≈ 7000–50 000 K), requiring the use of different analysis codes. Most Nodes could therefore only handle part of the data. Quality checks were applied to the results of these Nodes by comparing them to benchmark stars, and by comparing them to one another. For each star the Node values were then homogenised into a single result: the recommended parameters and abundances. Results. Eight Nodes each analysed part of the data. In total 17 693 spectra of 6462 stars were analysed, most of them in 37 open star clusters. The homogenisation led to stellar parameters for 5584 stars. Abundances were determined for a more limited number of stars. The elements studied are He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si, and Sc. Abundances for at least one of these elements were determined for 292 stars. Conclusions. We report the identification of a set of old super metal-rich dwarf stars with orbits of low eccentricity that reach a maximum height from the Galactic plane between ~0.5-1.5 kpc. We discuss their properties to understand their origins. We use data from the internal data release 6 of the Gaia-ESO Survey. We selected stars observed at high resolution with abundances of 21 species of 18 individual elements. We apply hierarchical clustering to group the stars with similar chemical abundances within the complete chemical abundance space. According to their chemical properties, this set of super metal-rich stars can be arranged into five subgroups. Four seem to follow a chemical enrichment flow, where nearly all abundances increase in lockstep with Fe. The fifth subgroup shows different chemical characteristics. All subgroups have the following features: median ages of the order of 7-9 Gyr, Solar or sub-Solar [Mg/Fe] ratios, maximum height between 0.5-1.5 kpc, low eccentricities, and a detachment from the expected metallicity gradient with guiding radius. The high metallicity of our stars is incompatible with a formation in the Solar neighbourhood. Their dynamic properties agree with theoretical expectations that these stars travelled from the inner Galaxy due to blurring and, most importantly, to churning. We suggest that most of this population's stars originated in the Milky Way's inner regions (inner disc and/or the bulge) and later migrated to the Solar neighbourhood. The region from where the stars originated had a complex chemical enrichment history, with contributions from supernovae types Ia and II and possibly asymptotic giant branch stars., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures. This is an Open Access article, published by EDP Sciences, under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present a spectroscopic analysis of the GIRAFFE and UVES data collected by the Gaia-ESO survey for the young open cluster NGC 3293. Archive spectra from the same instruments obtained in the framework of the ‘VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars’ are also analysed. Atmospheric parameters, non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) chemical abundances for six elements (He, C, N, Ne, Mg, and Si), or variability information are reported for a total of about 160 B stars spanning a wide range in terms of spectral types (B1 to B9.5) and rotation rate (up to 350 km s−1). Our analysis leads to about a five-fold increase in the number of cluster members with an abundance determination and it characterises the late B-star population in detail for the first time. We take advantage of the multi-epoch observations on various timescales and a temporal baseline, sometimes spanning ∼15 years, to detect several binary systems or intrinsically line-profile variables. A deconvolution algorithm is used to infer the current, true (deprojected) rotational velocity distribution. We find a broad, Gaussian-like distribution peaking around 200–250 km s−1. Although some stars populate the high-velocity tail, most stars in the cluster appear to rotate far from critical. We discuss the chemical properties of the cluster, including the low occurrence of abundance peculiarities in the late B stars and the paucity of objects showing CN-cycle burning products at their surface. We argue that the former result can largely be explained by the inhibition of diffusion effects because of fast rotation, while the latter is generally in accord with the predictions of single-star evolutionary models under the assumption of a wide range of initial spin rates at the onset of main-sequence evolution. However, we find some evidence for a less efficient mixing in two quite rapidly rotating stars that are among the most massive objects in our sample. Finally, we obtain a cluster age of ∼20 Myr through a detailed, star-to-star correction of our results for the effect of stellar rotation (e.g., gravity darkening). This is significantly older than previous estimates from turn-off fitting that fully relied on classical, non-rotating isochrones. © T. A., Context. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey, the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100 000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. Methods. We made use of the information recorded and archived in the observing blocks; during the observing runs; in a number of relevant documents; in the spectra and master catalogue of spectra; in the parameters delivered by the analysis nodes and the working groups; in the final catalogue; and in the science papers. Based on these sources, we critically analyse and discuss the output and products of the Survey, including science highlights. We also determined the average metallicities of the open clusters observed as science targets and of a sample of clusters whose spectra were retrieved from the ESO archive. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110 000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. Conclusions. The final catalogue will be released through the ESO archive in the first half of 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. We present and discuss photometric optical data in the area of the OB association Sco OB1 covering about 1 deg2. UBVI photometry is employed in tandem with Gaia DR2 data to investigate the three-dimensional structure and the star formation history of the region. By combining parallaxes and proper motions, we identify seven physical groups located between the young open cluster NGC 6231 and the bright nebula IC 4628. The most prominent group coincides with the sparse open cluster Trumpler 24. We confirm the presence of the intermediate-age star cluster VdB-Hagen 202, which is unexpected in this environment, and provide for the first time estimates of its fundamental parameters. After assessing individual groups membership, we derive mean proper motion components, distances, and ages. The seven groups belong to two different families. To the younger family (family I) belong several pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars as well. These are evenly spread across the field, and also in front of VdB-Hagen 202. VdB-Hagen 202, and two smaller, slightly detached, groups of similar properties form family II, which do not belong to the association, but are caught in the act of passing through it. As for the younger population, this forms an arc-like structure from the bright nebula IC 4628 down to NGC 6231, as previously found. Moreover, the PMS stars density seems to increase from NGC 6231 northward to Trumpler 24.

Pre-main sequence models with inflated radii are needed to simultaneously reproduce the colour-magnitude diagram and the lithium depletion pattern in young open clusters. We tested a new set of PMS models including radius inflation due to starspots or magnetic inhibition of convection, using five clusters observed by the Gaia-ESO Survey, spanning the age range ~10-100 Myr where such effects could be important. Gaia-ESO radial velocities were combined with Gaia EDR3 astrometry to obtain clean lists of high-probability members for the five clusters. A Bayesian maximum likelihood method was adopted to derive the best model parameters and the cluster reddening and age. Models were calculated for different values of the mixing length parameter ($\alpha_{ML}=2.0$, 1.5 and 1.0), without spots or with effective spot coverage $\beta_{spot}=0.2$ and 0.4. To reproduce the CMD and the Li depletion pattern in Gamma Vel A and B and in 25 Ori we need both a reduced convection efficiency $\alpha_{ML}=1.0$ and an effective spot coverage of ~20%. We obtained ages of 18 Myr and 21 Myr for Gamma Vel A and B, respectively, and 19 Myr for 25 Ori. However, a single isochrone is not sufficient to account for the Li dispersion, and an increasing level of spot coverage as mass decreases seems to be required. The older clusters (NGC2451B at 30 Myr, NGC2547 at 35 Myr, and NGC2516 at 138 Myr) are consistent with standard models ($\alpha_{ML}=2.0$ and no spots) except at low masses: a 20% spot coverage seems to reproduce the sequence of M-type stars better and might explain the observed abundance spread. The quality of Gaia-ESO data combined with Gaia allows us to gain important insights on PMS evolution. The chemical makeup of a star provides the fossil information of the environment where it formed. Under this premise, it should be possible to use chemical abundances to tag stars that formed within the same stellar association. This idea - known as chemical tagging - has not produced the expected results, especially within the thin disk where open stellar clusters have chemical patterns that are difficult to disentangle. The ultimate goal of this study is to probe the feasibility of chemical tagging within the thin disk population using high-quality data from a controlled sample of stars. We also aim at improving the existing techniques of chemical tagging and giving guidance on different strategies of clustering analysis in the elemental abundance space. Here we develop the first blind search of open clusters' members through clustering analysis in the elemental abundance space using the OPTICS algorithm applied to data from the Gaia-ESO survey. First, we evaluate different strategies of analysis, determining which ones are more performing. Second, we apply these methods to a data set including both field stars and open clusters attempting a blind recover of as many open clusters as possible. We show how specific strategies of data analysis can improve the final results. Specifically, we demonstrate that open clusters can be more efficaciously recovered with the Manhattan metric and on a space whose dimensions are carefully selected. Using these (and other) prescriptions we are able to recover open clusters hidden in our data set and find new members of these stellar associations. Our results indicate that there are chances of recovering open clusters' members via clustering analysis in the elemental abundance space. We exploit the unique characteristics of a sample of open clusters (OCs) and field stars for which high-precision 7Li abundances and stellar parameters are homogeneously derived by the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES). We derive possibly undepleted 7Li abundances for 26 OCs and star forming regions with ages from young to old spanning a large range of Galactocentric distances, which allows us to reconstruct the local late Galactic evolution of lithium as well as its current abundance gradient along the disc. Field stars are added to look further back in time and to constrain 7Li evolution in other Galactic components. The data are then compared to theoretical tracks from chemical evolution models that implement different 7Li forges. We find that the upper envelope of the 7Li abundances measured in field stars of nearly solar metallicities traces very well the level of lithium enrichment attained by the ISM as inferred from observations of cluster stars. We confirm previous findings that the abundance of 7Li in the solar neighbourhood does not decrease at supersolar metallicity. The comparison of the data with the chemical evolution model predictions favours a scenario in which the majority of the 7Li abundance in meteorites comes from novae. Current data also seem to suggest that the nova rate flattens out at later times. This requirement might have implications for the masses of the white dwarf nova progenitors and deserves further investigation. Neutrino-induced reactions taking place in core-collapse supernovae also produce some fresh lithium. Gaia DR2 catalog provides a unique possibility to study the three-dimensional structure and the three-dimensional velocity field of the nearby open clusters. We can either select stars with a maximum membership probability and the most accurate values for the proper motions, parallaxes, and the radial velocities, or study these clusters statistically using overwhelmingly large areas of sky of tens by tens degrees. The second approach allows us to reveal the extensive outer parts of the clusters - a corona and the tidal tails and to study the luminosity and mass functions of these clusters. We present the first results of the investigation of several nearby open clusters, including Pleiades, Alpha Persei, Ruprecht 147.

On October 29, 2018, the Vaia storm hits the North-Eastern regions of Italy by wind gusts exceeding 200 km h-1. The forests in these regions have been seriously damaged. This contribution illustrates the methodology adopted in the emergency phase to estimate forest damages caused by Vaia storm, both in terms of damaged forest areas and growing stock volume of fallen trees. 494 Municipalities registered forest damages caused by Vaia, destroyed or intensely damaged forest stands amounted to about 42.500 ha, spread in Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy and, only marginally, Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta. The growing stock volume of fallen trees was about 8.5 millions m3.

Context. NGC 1851 is one of several globular clusters for which multiple stellar populations of the subgiant branch have been clearly identified and a difference in metallicity detected. A crucial piece of information on the formation history of this cluster can be provided by the sum of A(C+N+O) abundances. However, these values have lacked a general consensus thus far. The separation of the subgiant branch can be based on age and/or A(C+N+O) abundance differences. Aims. Our main aim was to determine carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances for evolved giants in the globular cluster NGC1851 in order to check whether or not the double populations of stars are coeval. Methods. High-resolution spectra, observed with the FLAMES-UVES spectrograph on the ESO VLT telescope, were analysed using a differential model atmosphere method. Results. We provide abundances of up to 29 chemical elements for a sample of 45 giants in NGC 1851. The investigated stars can be separated into two populations with a difference of 0.07 dex in the mean metallicity, 0.3 dex in the mean C/N, and 0.35 dex in the mean s-process dominated element-to-iron abundance ratios [s/Fe]. No significant difference was determined in the mean values of A(C+N+O) as well as in abundance to iron ratios of carbon, alpha- and iron-peak-elements, and of europium. Conclusions. As the averaged A(C+N+O) values between the two populations do not differ, additional evidence is given that NGC 1851 is composed of two clusters, the metal-rich cluster being by about 0.6 Gyr older than the metal-poor one. Context. Open clusters are recognised as excellent tracers of Galactic thin-disc properties. At variance with intermediate-age and old open clusters, for which a significant number of studies is now available, clusters younger than ≲ 150 Myr have been mostly overlooked in terms of their chemical composition until recently (with few exceptions). On the other hand, previous investigations seem to indicate an anomalous behaviour of young clusters, which includes (but is not limited to) slightly sub-solar iron (Fe) abundances and extreme, unexpectedly high barium (Ba) enhancements. Aims. In a series of papers, we plan to expand our understanding of this topic and investigate whether these chemical peculiarities are instead related to abundance analysis techniques. Methods. We present a new determination of the atmospheric parameters for 23 dwarf stars observed by the Gaia-ESO survey in five young open clusters (τ < 150 Myr) and one star-forming region (NGC 2264). We exploit a new method based on titanium (Ti) lines to derive the spectroscopic surface gravity, and most importantly, the microturbulence parameter. A combination of Ti and Fe lines is used to obtain effective temperatures. We also infer the abundances of Fe » I, Fe » II, Ti » I, Ti » II, Na » I, Mg » I, Al » I, Si » I, Ca » I, Cr » I, and Ni » I. Results. Our findings are in fair agreement with Gaia-ESO iDR5 results for effective temperatures and surface gravities, but suggest that for very young stars, the microturbulence parameter is over-estimated when Fe lines are employed. This affects the derived chemical composition and causes the metal content of very young clusters to be under-estimated. Conclusions. Our clusters display a metallicity [Fe/H] between +0.04 ± 0.01 and +0.12 ± 0.02; they are not more metal poor than the Sun. We employ Gaia DR2 proper motions for 151 Milky Way globular clusters from Vasiliev (2019) in tandem with distances and line-of-sight velocities to derive their kinematical properties. To assign clusters to the Milky Way thick disk, bulge, and halo we follow the approach of Posti et al. (2018) who distinguished among different Galactic stellar components using stars's orbits. In particular, we use the ratio $L_{z}/e$, the $Z$ projection of the angular momentum to the eccentricity, as population tracer, which we complement with chemical abundances extracted from the literature and Monte-Carlo simulations. We find that 20 globular clusters belong to the bar/bulge of the Milky Way, 35 exhibit disk properties, and 96 are members of the halo. Moreover, we find that halo globular clusters have close to zero rotational velocity with average value $$ =1$\pm$ 4 km s$^{-1}$. On the other hand, the sample of clusters that belong to the thick disk possesses a significant rotation with average rotational velocity 179 $\pm$ 6 km s$^{-1}$. The twenty globular clusters orbiting within the bar/bulge region of the Milky Way galaxy have average rotational velocity of 49 $\pm$ 11 km s$^{-1}$., Comment: 25 pages, 10 Figures, 5 Tables. This paper presents the results of determination of the molybdenum abundances in 13 G, K type stars in the open clusters NGC 2477 and NGC 2506. The abundances of molybdenum were determined using stellar atmosphere models by Castelli & Kurucz (2004), as well as a modified STARSP LTE spectral synthesis code (Tsymbal, 1996). For the used Mo I lines 5506 and 5533 Å the oscillator strengths log gf were adopted from the latest version of the VALD database dated 2016 (Kupka et al., 1999). The high resolution spectra were obtained with a VLT telescope at the European Southern observatory (ESO, Chile).We used atmospheric parameters of the investigated stars which we had obtained earlier. We have found out that the molybdenum abundances depend on metallicity [Fe/H] in giants of NGC 2506 and NGC 2477. For the stars in NGC 2506, molybdenum is slightly overabundant as compared to the solar abundance; such an overabundance is slightly higher in the stars of the second investigated cluster NGC 2477. Further investigation of the Mo abundance in larger number of open clusters is required to draw reliable conclusions.

Careful analyses of photometric and star count data available for the nine putative young clusters identified by Camargo et al. (2015, 2016) at high Galactic latitudes reveal that none of the groups contain early-type stars, and most are not significant density enhancements above field level. 2MASS colours for stars in the groups match those of unreddened late-type dwarfs and giants, as expected for contamination by (mostly) thin disk objects. A simulation of one such field using only typical high latitude foreground stars yields a colour-magnitude diagram that is very similar to those constructed by Camargo et al. (2015, 2016) as evidence for their young groups as well as the means of deriving their reddenings and distances. Although some of the fields are coincident with clusters of galaxies, one must conclude that there is no evidence that the putative clusters are extremely young stellar groups., Accepted for publication (MNRAS)

In the era of large high-resolution spectroscopic surveys, high-quality spectra can contribute to our understanding of the Galactic chemical evolution, providing chemical abundances belonging to the different nucleosynthesis channels, and also providing constraints to stellar age. Some abundance ratios have been proven to be excellent indicators of stellar ages. We aim at providing an empirical relationship between stellar ages and [C/N] using, as calibrators, open star clusters observed by both the Gaia-ESO and APOGEE surveys. We use stellar parameters and abundances from the Gaia-ESO and APOGEE of the Galactic field and open cluster stars. Ages of star clusters are retrieved from the literature sources and validated using a common set of isochrones. We use the same isochrones to determine, for each age and metallicity, the surface gravity at which the first dredge-up and red giant branch bump occur. We study the effect of extra-mixing processes in our sample of giant stars, and we derive the mean [C/N] in evolved stars, including only stars without evidence of extra-mixing. Combining the Gaia-ESO and APOGEE samples of open clusters, we derive a linear relationship between [C/N] and logarithmic cluster ages. We apply our relationship to selected giant field stars in both Gaia-ESO and APOGEE. We find an age separation between thin and thick disc stars and age trends within their populations, with an increasing age towards lower metallicity populations. With such empirical relationship, we are able to provide an age estimate for giant stars in which C and N abundances are measured. Isochrone fitting is less sensitive for giant than dwarf stars at the turn off. The present method can be thus considered as an additional tool to give an independent estimate of the age of giant stars, with uncertainties in their ages comparable to those obtained using isochrone fitting for dwarf stars., Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures. We take advantage of the Gaia-ESO Survey iDR4 bulge data to search for abundance anomalies that could shed light on the composite nature of the Milky Way bulge. The α-element (Mg, Si, and whenever available, Ca) abundances, and their trends with Fe abundances have been analysed for a total of 776 bulge stars. In addition, the aluminum abundances and their ratio to Fe and Mg have also been examined. Our analysis reveals the existence of low-α element abundance stars with respect to the standard bulge sequence in the [α/ Fe] versus [Fe/H] plane. Eighteen objects present deviations in [α/ Fe] ranging from 2.1 to 5.3σ with respect to the median standard value. Those stars do not show Mg-Al anti-correlation patterns. Incidentally, this sign of the existence of multiple stellar populations is reported firmly for the first time for the bulge globular cluster NGC 6522. The identified low-α abundance stars have chemical patterns that are compatible with those of the thin disc. Their link with massive dwarf galaxies accretion seems unlikely, as larger deviations in α abundance and Al would be expected. The vision of a bulge composite nature and a complex formation process is reinforced by our results. Context. Trumpler 23 is a moderately populated, intermediate-age open cluster within the solar circle at a RGC ~ 6 kpc. It is in a crowded field very close to the Galactic plane and the color-magnitude diagram shows significant field contamination and possible differential reddening; it is a relatively understudied cluster for these reasons, but its location makes it a key object for determining Galactic abundance distributions. Aims. New data from the Gaia-ESO Survey enable the first ever radial velocity and spectroscopic metallicity measurements for this cluster. We aim to use velocities to isolate cluster members, providing more leverage for determining cluster parameters. Methods. Gaia-ESO Survey data for 167 potential members have yielded radial velocity measurements, which were used to determine the systemic velocity of the cluster and membership of individual stars. Atmospheric parameters were also used as a check on membership when available. Literature photometry was used to re-determine cluster parameters based on radial velocity member stars only; theoretical isochrones are fit in the V, V-I diagram. Cluster abundance measurements of ten radial-velocity member stars with high-resolution spectroscopy are presented for 24 elements. These abundances have been compared to local disk stars, and where possible placed within the context of literature gradient studies. Results. We find Trumpler 23 to have an age of 0.80 ± 0.10 Gyr, significant differential reddening with an estimated mean cluster E(V-I) of 1.02, and an apparent distance modulus of 14.15 ± 0.20. We find an average cluster metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.14 ± 0.03 dex, a solar [α/Fe] abundance, and notably subsolar [s-process/Fe] abundances. © 2017 ESO.

The results of many observational studies and some randomized clinical trials seem to point toward intensive home hemodialysis (IHD) as being able to improve the outcome of uremic patients under chronic dialysis with a cost/benefit ratio more favorable than conventional hemodialysis. The increasing interest in home hemodialysis in the last years is due to its identification as the easiest strategic option for the realization of programs of intensive hemodialysis. However, a careful attention has to be paid in the selection of candidate patients for home hemodialysis; specifically, the psychosocial, demographic, and clinical factors are some of the aspects that need a major consideration due to their impact on the success of such programs. Further studies are strongly needed to better clarify the clinical ground and the limits of IHD use in dialysis patients.

We present eight new T4.5-T7.5 dwarfs identified in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) Data Release 1 (DR1). In addition we have recovered the T4.5 dwarf SDSS J020742.91+000056.2 and the T8.5 dwarf ULAS J003402.77-005206.7. Photometric candidates were picked up in two-colour diagrams over 190 square degrees (DR1) and selected in at least two filters. All candidates exhibit near-infrared spectra with strong methane and water absorption bands characteristic of T dwarfs and the derived spectral types follow the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006). We have found 6 new T4.5-T5.5 dwarfs, one T7 dwarf, one T7.5 dwarf, and recovered a T4.5 dwarf and a T8.5 dwarf. We provide distance estimates which lie in the 15-85 pc range; the T7.5 and T8.5 dwarfs are probably within 25 pc of the Sun. We present the first evidence of clear signatures of tidal distortions in the density distribution of the fascinating open cluster NGC 6791. We used deep and wide-field data obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope covering a 2x2 square degrees area around the cluster. The two-dimensional density map obtained with the optimal matched filter technique shows a clear elongation and an irregular distribution starting from ~300" from the cluster center. At larger distances, two tails extending in opposite directions beyond the tidal radius are also visible. These features are aligned to both the absolute proper motion and to the Galactic center directions. Moreover, other overdensities appear to be stretched in a direction perpendicular to the Galactic plane. Accordingly to the behaviour observed in the density map, we find that both the surface brightness and the star count density profiles reveal a departure from a King model starting from ~600" from the center. These observational evidence suggest that NGC 6791 is currently experiencing mass loss likely due to gravitational shocking and interactions with the tidal field. We use this evidence to argue that NGC 6791 should have lost a significant fraction of its original mass. A larger initial mass would in fact explain why the cluster survived so long. Using available recipes based on analytic studies and N-body simulations, we derived the expected mass loss due to stellar evolution and tidal interactions and estimated the initial cluster mass to be M_ini=(1.5-4) x 10^5 M_sun., Comment: Accepted for publication in the MNRAS (9 pages, 8 Figures)

This paper describes the analysis of UVES and GIRAFFE spectra acquired by the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey in the fields of young clusters whose population includes pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. Both methods that have been extensively used in the past and new ones developed in the contest of the Gaia-ESO survey enterprise are available and used. The internal precision of these quantities is estimated by inter-comparing the results obtained by such different methods, while the accuracy is estimated by comparison with independent external data, like effective temperature and surface gravity derived from angular diameter measurements, on a sample of benchmarks stars. Specific strategies are implemented to deal with fast rotation, accretion signatures, chromospheric activity, and veiling. The analysis carried out on spectra acquired in young clusters' fields during the first 18 months of observations, up to June 2013, is presented in preparation of the first release of advanced data products. Stellar parameters obtained with the higher resolution and larger wavelength coverage from UVES are reproduced with comparable accuracy and precision using the smaller wavelength range and lower resolution of the GIRAFFE setup adopted for young stars, which allows us to provide with confidence stellar parameters for the much larger GIRAFFE sample. Precisions are estimated to be $\approx$ 120 K r.m.s. in Teff, $\approx$0.3 dex r.m.s. in logg, and $\approx$0.15 dex r.m.s. in [Fe/H], for both the UVES and GIRAFFE setups., 22 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

Aim of this work is to determine C, N, and O abundances in stars of Galactic open clusters of the Gaia-ESO survey and to compare the observed abundances with those predicted by current stellar and Galactic evolution models. In this pilot paper, we investigate the first three intermediate-age open clusters. High-resolution spectra, observed with the FLAMES-UVES spectrograph on the ESO VLT telescope, were analysed using a differential model atmosphere method. Abundances of carbon were derived using the C2 band heads at 5135 and 5635.5 {\AA}. The wavelength interval 6470- 6490 {\AA}, with CN features, was analysed to determine nitrogen abundances. Oxygen abundances were determined from the [O i] line at 6300 {\AA}. The mean values of the elemental abundances in Trumpler 20 as determined from 42 stars are: [Fe/H] = 0.10 +- 0.08 (s.d.), [C/H] = -0.10 +- 0.07, [N/H] = 0.50 +- 0.07, and consequently C/N = 0.98 +- 0.12. We measure from five giants in NGC 4815: [Fe/H] = -0.01 +- 0.04, [C/H] = -0.17 +- 0.08, [N/H] = 0.53 +- 0.07, [O/H] = 0.12 +- 0.09, and C/N = 0.79 +- 0.08. We obtain from 27 giants in NGC 6705: [Fe/H] = 0.0 +- 0.05, [C/H] = -0.08 +- 0.06, [N/H] = 0.61 +- 0.07, [O/H] = 0.13 +- 0.05, and C/N = 0.83 +- 0.19. The C/N ratios of stars in the investigated open clusters were compared with the ratios predicted by stellar evolutionary models. For the corresponding stellar turn-off masses from 1.9 to 3.3 solar masses, the observed C/N ratio values are very close to the predictions of standard first dredge-up models as well as to models of thermohaline extra-mixing. The average [O/H] abundance ratios of NGC 4815 and NGC 6705 are compared with the predictions of two Galactic chemical evolution models. In 2012, we applied a three-dimensional formulation to kinematic measurements of the Galactic thick disk and derived a surprisingly low dark matter density at the solar position. This result was challenged by Bovy & Tremaine (2012, ApJ, 756, 89), who claimed that the observational data are consistent with the expected dark matter density if a one-dimensional approach is adopted. We analyze the assumption at the bases of their formulation and their claim that this returns a lower limit for the local dark matter density, which is accurate within 20%. We find that the validity of their formulation depends on the underlying mass distribution. We therefore analyze the predictions that their hypothesis casts on the radial gradient of the azimuthal velocity dV/dR and compare it with observational data as a testbed for the validity of their formulation. We find that their hypothesis requires too steep a profile of dV(Z)/dR, which is inconsistent with the observational data both in the Milky Way and in external galaxies. As a consequence, their results are biased and largely overestimate the mass density. Dynamical simulations also show that, contrary to their claims, low values of dV/dR are compatible with a Milky Way like potential with radially constant circular velocity. We nevertheless confirm that, according to their criticism, our assumption dV/dR=0 is only an approximation. If this hypothesis is released, and the available information about dV/dR in the thick disk is used, the resulting local dark matter density increases by a tiny amount, from 0+-1 to 2+-3 mM_sun pc^(-3), with an upper limit of ~3.5 mM_sun pc^(-3). Hence, this approximation has negligible influence on our results. Our analysis shows that their criticism is not a viable explanation for the inferred lack of dark matter at the solar position detected by us. More studies are required to understand these unexpected results.

Photometry alone is not sufficient to unambiguously distinguish between ultra-faint star clusters and dwarf galaxies because of their overlap in morphological properties. Here we report on VLT/GIRAFFE spectra of candidate member stars in two recently discovered ultra-faint satellites Reticulum 2 and Horologium 1, obtained as part of the ongoing Gaia-ESO Survey. We identify 18 members in Reticulum 2 and 5 in Horologium 1. We find Reticulum 2 to have a velocity dispersion of ~3.22 km/s, implying a M/L ratio of ~ 500. We have inferred stellar parameters for all candidates and we find Reticulum 2 to have a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -2.46+/-0.1, with an intrinsic dispersion of ~ 0.29, and is alpha-enhanced to the level of [alpha/Fe]~0.4. We conclude that Reticulum 2 is a dwarf galaxy. We also report on the serendipitous discovery of four stars in a previously unknown stellar substructure near Reticulum 2 with [Fe/H] ~ -2 and V_hel ~ 220 km/s, far from the systemic velocity of Reticulum 2. For Horologium 1 we infer a velocity dispersion of 4.9^{+2.8}_{-0.9} km/s and a consequent M/L ratio of ~ 600, leading us to conclude that Horologium 1 is also a dwarf galaxy. Horologium 1 is slightly more metal-poor than Reticulum 2 [Fe/H] = -2.76 +/- 0.1 and is similarly alpha-enhanced: [alpha/Fe] ~ 0.3. Despite a large error-bar, we also measure a significant spread of metallicities of 0.17 dex which strengthen the evidence that Horologium 1 is indeed a dwarf galaxy. The line-of-sight velocity of Reticulum 2 is offset by some 100 km/s from the prediction of the orbital velocity of the LMC, thus making its association with the Cloud uncertain. However, at the location of Horologium 1, both the backward integrated LMC's orbit and the LMC's halo are predicted to have radial velocities similar to that of the dwarf. Recent studies have shown that L-carnitine may improve clinical status and reduce the need for erythropoietin in dialysis patients with cardiovascular diseases. In this observational study, we investigated whether the addition of L-carnitine to conventional therapy might improve cardiac function (as assessed by M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography) and clinical status in dialysis patients with left ventricular dysfunction.Eleven dialysis patients with reduced left ventricular function (EF45%) were treated with L-carnitine for 8 months. Two-dimensional (2-D) echocardiography was performed at baseline and every 2 months up to the end of the treatment period. The dosage of erythropoietin was also monitored during the study and the patients' clinical status was assessed by a questionnaire.Carnitine increased mean LV ejection fraction from 32.0% to 41.8% (p0.05 vs baseline). There was also a slight reduction of erythropoietin dosage and an improvement of clinical status.Eight months' therapy with carnitine appears to improve LV function and clinical status in dialysis patients with impaired LVF.

Pancino, E. et. al., We use Gaia-ESO (GES) Survey iDR4 data to explore the Mg-Al anti-correlation in globular clusters that were observed as calibrators, as a demonstration of the quality of Gaia-ESO Survey data and analysis. The results compare well with the available literature, within 0.1 dex or less, after a small (compared to the internal spreads) offset between the UVES and GIRAFFE data of 0.10-0.15 dex was taken into account. In particular, for the first time we present data for NGC 5927, which is one of the most metal-rich globular clusters studied in the literature so far with [Fe/H] =-0.39 ± 0.04 dex; this cluster was included to connect with the open cluster regime in the Gaia-ESO Survey internal calibration. The extent and shape of the Mg-Al anti-correlation provide strong constraints on the multiple population phenomenon in globular clusters. In particular, we studied the dependency of the Mg-Al anti-correlation extension with metallicity, present-day mass,and age of the clusters, using GES data in combination with a large set of homogenized literature measurements.We find a dependency with both metallicity and mass, which is evident when fitting for the two parameters simultaneously, but we do not find significant dependency with age. We confirm that the Mg-Al anti-correlation is not seen in all clusters, but disappears for the less massive or most metal-rich clusters. We also use our data set to see whether a normal anti-correlation would explain the low [Mg/α] observed in some extragalactic globular clusters, but find that none of the clusters in our sample can reproduce it; a more extreme chemical composition, such as that of NGC 2419, would be required. C.; Zaggia, S., Milky Way open clusters are very diverse in terms of age, chemical composition, and kinematic properties. Intermediate-age and old open clusters are less common, and it is even harder to find them inside the solar Galactocentric radius, due to the high mortality rate and strong extinction inside this region. NGC 6802 is one of the inner disk open clusters (IOCs) observed by the Gaia-ESO survey (GES). This cluster is an important target for calibrating the abundances derived in the survey due to the kinematic and chemical homogeneity of the members in open clusters. Using the measurements from Gaia-ESO internal data release 4 (iDR4), we identify 95 main-sequence dwarfs as cluster members from the GIRAFFE target list, and eight giants as cluster members from the UVES target list. The dwarf cluster members have a median radial velocity of 13.6 ± 1.9 km s, while the giant cluster members have a median radial velocity of 12.0 ± 0.9 km s and a median [Fe/H] of 0.10 ± 0.02 dex. The color-magnitude diagram of these cluster members suggests an age of 0.9 ± 0.1 Gyr, with (m-M) = 11.4 and E(B-V) = 0.86. We perform the first detailed chemical abundance analysis of NGC 6802, including 27 elemental species. To gain a more general picture about IOCs, the measurements of NGC 6802 are compared with those of other IOCs previously studied by GES, that is, NGC 4815, Trumpler 20, NGC 6705, and Berkeley 81. NGC 6802 shows similar C, N, Na, and Al abundances as other IOCs. These elements are compared with nucleosynthetic models as a function of cluster turn-off mass. We describe a new implementation of a parallel Tree-SPH code with the aim of simulating galaxy formation and evolution. The code has been parallelized using SHMEM, a Cray proprietary library to handle communications between the 256 processors of the Silicon Graphics T3E massively parallel supercomputer hosted by the Cineca Super-computing Center (Bologna, Italy). The code combines the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method to solve hydrodynamical equations with the popular Barnes and Hut (1986) tree-code to perform gravity calculation with a N × log N scaling, and it is based on the scalar Tree-SPH code developed by Carraro et al. (1998). Parallelization is achieved by distributing particles along processors according to a workload criterion. Benchmarks of the code, in terms of load balance and scalability, are analysed and critically discussed against the adiabatic collapse of an isothermal gas sphere test using 2 × 104 particles on eight processors. The code turns out to be balanced at more than 95% level. If the number of processors is increased, the load balance worsens slightly. The deviation from perfect scalability at increasing number of processors is negligible up to 64 processors. Additionally we have incorporated radiative cooling, star formation, feedback and an algorithm to follow the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium.

Polymorphisms of several clotting factors have been associated during the past few years with an increased risk of both venous or arterial thrombosis. However, final proof for the existence of a pathogenetic relationship between a given polymorphism and an increased risk for thrombosis is still lacking. Particular emphasis has been placed recently on a 20210 G to A prothrombin polymorphism. A critical review of available data indicates that such an abnormality may be associated with an increased risk of venous thrombosis but not arterial thrombosis (with a possible exception for myocardial infarction). However, this conclusion is based only on retrospective cohort studies which compared the prevalence of the abnormality in a group of patients with past venous or arterial thrombosis with a normal group (with no thrombosis). No prospective study has yet to show that patients with the abnormality, given similar additional acquired risk factors, have a higher incidence of thrombotic complications as compared with controls. The mechanism whereby the abnormality might cause thrombosis has been assumed to be an increase in prothrombin levels. Since an association between two phenomena does not necessarily mean that a causal relationship exists between the same events, it is important to be cautious before claiming that such abnormality is responsible for thrombosis. Therefore, although included commonly in the investigation profile, the search for the 20210 G to A prothrombin abnormality should not be considered yet to be an essential component in the routine study of hypercoagulable and/or thrombotic conditions.
