Abstract

Resume Le risque d’embolie gazeuse en fin de perfusion est connu. Il semblait theoriquement aboli avec l’utilisation des poches souples. Pourtant des cas ont ete rapportes lors de perfusion sous pression. Cette etude experimentale s’attache a etablir le risque d’embolie gazeuse avec les poches souples de type Ecoflac®. Ces dernieres, du fait de leur texture et de leur deformabilite, nˈexposent pas a un risque dˈembolie gazeuse dans des conditions normales de perfusion sous pression a lˈaide de manchette pneumatique : il nˈa ete possible d’expulser que des quantites minimes d’air, a priori sans danger, meme chez l’enfant. Cependant, le fabricant pour eviter tout risque, recommande la purge de l’air residuel avant une administration sous pression. Cette recommandation sˈapplique a toute poche souple contenant de lˈair residuel, elle reste trop peu connue et de ce fait rarement mise en œuvre par les utilisateurs.

Abstract

The s dependence of the electromagnetic proton form factors in the time-like region has been determined from the threshold (s = 4Mp2) up to s = 4.2 GeV2. Data were collected in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics. Total and differential cross section of the p p → e − e + reaction have been measured. The electric and magnetic form factors are found to have comparable value. The observed form factor shows a clear steep s dependence close to the threshold.

Abstract

We report the first determination of CP violation parameters from parameter from particle—antiparticle asymmetry in the decay of neutral kaons into two charged pions. Observation of such an asymmetry is direct proof of CP violation. A fit to the asymmetry enabled a determination of the parameter η+− to be made, yielding the result |η+−|=[2.32±0.14 (stat.)±0.03 (syst.)]×10−3 and σ+−=42.3°±4.4° (stat.)±0.4° (syst.), with an additional uncertainty of ±1.0° due to the error on the present published value of Δm, the KL0-KS0 mass difference. The magnitudes of both statistical and systematic errors will be significantly reduced in the future.

Abstract

Gas embolism at the end of infusion is a well known hazard, that should have disappeared with the use of flexible bags. However, some cases have been reported after pressure infusion. This experimental study evaluates the risk for gas embolism with Ecoflac type flexible bags. These bags are safe under normal pressure infusion conditions with a pneumatic sleeve, because of their texture and pliability; indeed, only minimal air volumes could be expelled, without any risk even in children. However, to be on the safe side, the manufacturer recommends to expel any residual air before pressure administration. This recommendation applies to any bag containing residual air, and since many people are not aware of this, it is rarely put into practice.

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment is aiming at precise CP violation tests using initially pure K0- and K0BAR beams from the intense source provided by the annihilation of the LEAR pBAR-beam in hydrogen. The strangeness tagging efficiency and the systematic errors have been studied and found to be in agreement with the design specifications. The measurement of the differential time asymmetry of the pi+pi- decays allowed the direct observation of differences in the decay rates of particles and antiparticles.The CP violating parameters were determined as \eta+/-\ = (2.32 +/- 0.14) . 10(-3) and phi+/- = 42.3-degrees +/- 4.4-degrees. First results in the reconstruction and analysis of the neutral kaon decays into two neutral pions and the K(e)3 decay are presented. Nuclear Physics B

Abstract

We describe the status of experiment PS195, which is under way on LEAR at CERN to study CP violation starting with pure K0 or K0 states. Early results on backgrounds and systematic effects agree with expectations from the original proposal. An asymmetry in particle‐anti‐particle partial decay rates has been seen for the first time.

Abstract

The values of the proton form factor in the time‐like region have been determined for values of Q2 ranging from threshold to 4.2 (GeV/c)2. The data were collected in an experiment performed at the LEAR at CERN. The final results are presented here. We observed a s dependence of the form factor near threshold which is not in agreement with the previous experiments. We found also the CM angular distributions of the e+e− pair at various energies compatible with the ‖Ge‖=‖Gm‖ hypothesis.

Abstract

The s dependence of the proton form factor in the time-like region has been determined up to s=4.2 GeV2, assuming the validity of the |Ge| = |Gm| = |G| hypothesis. Data were taken in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics on the proton form factor near threshold in the time-like region. Our result consist of cross section measurements of the p p → e + e − reaction for different beam momenta in the kinematical r 3.6⩽s⩽4.2 GeV2. The observed s dependence of the form factor close to threshold differs appreciably from the one suggested by previous experiments.

Abstract

The rate of the reaction pp→e+e− has been measured in liquid hydrogen for antiprotons at momentum values between 150 and 300 MeV/c. New precise values of the proton electromagnetic form factor in the time-like region have been obtained assuming |Ge|=|Gm| in the investigated region. The q2 dependence of the form factor close to threshold is found to have a steeper slope than indicated by existing calculations based on vector dominance models.

Abstract

The aim of the CP LEAR experiment is to study symmetry-violation effects, making use of tagged K0's and K0's. The detector, although missing some electronic components, has been operational for a few weeks at the end of 1989 at the CERN Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). At the moment, the analysis of the data is in progress. This paper gives a description of the experimental method and of the detector; the sensitivities of some measurements and some preliminary results are also discussed.

Abstract

We have measured the absolute cross section for dimuon production in hadron collisions at 200 GeV/c in the continuum region M = 4–8.5 GeV. In all the channels studied (pN, p N, π±N and π−H2) the experimental cross section is significantly larger by a factor of 2.3 ± 0.5 than expected from the Drell-Yan model. Furthermore, our proton-nucleon data allow a determination of the nucleon valence structure function which agrees with the deep inelastic lepton scattering data.

Abstract

We have studied the transverse momentum of dimuons in the mass interval 4.1 to 8.5 GeV/c2 produced on hydrogen and platinum targets by different hadrons. For incident π−, we give a model independent parametrisation of the data and compare our results to QCD perturbative calculations. First order diagrams predict a transverse momentum s dependence smaller than the observed value.

Abstract

From events with two like-sign muons, or with three or four muons, observed in the NA3 spectrometer with 280 GeV/c incoming π− beam, we deduce upper limits on the production of beauty meson pairs B B . We use the leptonic branching ratios of B meson measured at CESR storage rings, and assume that no nuclear effects occur in the platinum target. We find σ(B B ) nb/nucleon for centrally produced B B nb/nucleon for a diffractive production. These values are one order of magnitude lower than previously published limits. As a consequence, the ψψ events observed in our experiment cannot come from B B decays.

Abstract

We present results on the measurement of the Drell-Yan absolute cross section and of the shape of the nucleon structure functions by the analysis of massive dimuon events produced by antiprotons at 150 GeV and by protons at 150 and 200 GeV. Good agreement is found with the results of the neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments, for the shape of the valence structure function. The measured cross section however, when compared to the model predictions assuming the DIS nucleon structure function exhibits a normalization factor K = 2.3 ± 0.4.

Abstract

We have studied high statistics samples of dimuon events (∼35,000) produced from π± on platinum target in the mass interval 4.2≦Mμμ≦8.5 GeV at 150, 200 and 280 GeV/c. The π structure function is obtained by a fit ofd2σ/dx1dx2 to π+ and π− data. At 200 GeV, the simultaneous use of π+ and π− data allows a separate determination of the valence and sea structure functions of the π. Furthermore, the 150 and 280 GeV data allow an accurate determination of the shape of the valence structure function and give an estimate of its evolution betweenQ2=25 and 50 GeV2.

Abstract

We present here the analysis of low mass dimuon events (1.8 < Mμμ < 2.6 GeV/c2) produced by positive and negative pion and proton beams at 200 GeV/c. Using the difference between the π- and the π+ cross sections, and comparing to the Drell-Yan model, we find a K-factor of 2.47 ± 0.5. Only about 12 of the events can be attributed to the Drell-Yan mechanism. If the remaining events are attributed to muonic decays of D mesons we findan upper limit for the cross section of charmed meson production.

From the analysis of multimuon events produced by π− interactions at 150 and 280 GeV/c in the NA3 spectrometer, we present evidence for the production of two J/ψ mesons in the same interaction (13 events seen, for an expected background of about 0.2 events). Some possible production mechanisms are described and an estimation of the cross section is given.

Abstract

This paper gives the outlines of the NA3 large acceptance magnetic spectrometer equipped with multiwire proportional chambers running at the CERN-SPS in an extensive study of the production of high mass muon pairs by hadronic beams. A special feature of this experiment is the powerful and efficient trigger and data acquisition system which allows operation of the spectrometer with intense beams, yielding at the same time low trigger rate and high proportion of good events. Some aspects of the off-line analysis program are also described.

A measurement of the total cross section for the reaction p p → π+π− has been performed for seven values of the incident momentum between 158 and 275 MeV/c. The values obtained, if compared with previous results at higher momenta, agree with a 1/s dependence. The differential cross section sssumed over the whole incident momentum range has also been measured and the result of a fit by Legendre polynomials is given.

Abstract

We use low mass dimuons (0.35 M μμ ⩽ 2 GeV/ c 2 ) to analyse the production at high transverse momentum ( P T ⩾ 2 GeV/ c ) of the resonances ϱ, ω, π. We have studied the variation of the cross section with the type of incident particle (π, K, p) at 150, 200, 280 GeV/ c and the nuclear effects by comparison of platinum and hydrogen targets. There is no significant difference between the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions with those observed at lower P T (0 P T c ), meanwhile x F -distributions show a leading effect in the production of gf by kaons at these relatively high transverse momenta.

Abstract

We have studied the time distribution of semi-leptonic decays of the neutral K meson produced in a hydrogen bubble chamber in the reaction K+p → Kopπ+ with K+ momenta between 1.2 and 1.7 GeV/c. We have identified 306 πev decays and 74 πμv decays of known lepton charge with proper times between 0.04 and 20 KS lifetimes. The results are compatible with no violation of the ΔS = ΔQ rule. For the ratio x of the ΔS = −ΔQ amplitude to the ΔS = ΔQ amplitude we find the values +0.06+0.13inKe3decays:Re⁡xe=0.05inKμ3decays:Re⁡xμ=0.10−0.07−0.16+0.06+0.16Im⁡xe=0.08Im⁡xμ=−0.03−0.07,−0.18. Assuming ΔS = ΔQ we find the rate Γ(KoL → πev + πμv) = (12.4 ± 0.7) × 106 s−1.

Abstract

From a study of 70 000 K° decays in the CERN 2m hydrogen bubble chamber, we have estimated the rate for KS0 → π+π−γ for different cuts in the γ momentum. The results are in good agreement with inner bremsstrahlung on KS0 → π+π−. For γ momentum in the K° c.m. greater than 50 MeV/c, we obtain the branching ratio: Γ(KS → π+π−γ, k>50 MeV/c)/Γ(KS→π+π−)=(2.8. ± 0.6)×10−3. This leads to an estimate for the direct γ emission process: Γ(KS→π+π−γ direct)/Γ(KS → π+π−)=(0.3 ± 0.6) × 10−3.

We have studied the time distribution of π + π − π o decays of the neutral K meson produced in the reaction K + p → K o pπ + with K + momenta at 1.4 and 1.7 GeV/ c . Within our fiducial volume we have 98 uniquely identified π + π − π o decays with proper times between 0.04 and 20 K s lifetimes. For the ratio η +− o of the amplitude K s → π + π − π o to the amplitude K L → π + π − π o , it is found that: Re η +−0 = 0.01 ± 0.22 0.20 , Im η +−o = 0.33 ± 0.42 0.50 . This result is consistent with no CP -violation. Assuming η +− o = 0, we find the rate Г( K L → π + π − π o ) = (2.5 ± 0.3) 10 6 sec −1 .

The observation of 70 000 K0 pπ+ events produced with K+ incident momenta of 1.21, 1.29, 1.38 and 1.69 GeV/c allows a detailed description of the production and decay of the Δ(1236) and K∗(892) resonances which dominate the K0pπ+ final state. No striking variations with energy are observed. The associated production of Δ and K∗ near threshold shows striking similarities with the same production at higher energy.

Abstract

The strength functions of the πf5/2, πp3/2 and πf7/2 orbitals in neutron-rich 71Cu were obtained in a 72Zn(d,3He)71Cu proton pick-up reaction in inverse kinematics using a radioactive beam of 72Zn at 38 MeV/u. A dedicated set-up was developed to overcome the experimental challenges posed by the low cross section of the reaction and the low energy of the outgoing 3He particles. The excitation-energy spectrum was reconstructed and spectroscopic factors were obtained after analysis of the angular distributions with the finite-range Distorted-Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). The results show that unlike for the πf5/2 orbital and contrary to earlier interpretation, the πf7/2 single-particle strength distribution is not appreciably affected by the addition of neutrons beyond N=40.

Abstract

We have performed in the NA3 experiment the study of high mass dimuon production by a hadronic unseparated beam on hydrogen and platinum targets. The comparison of the production cross‐section for proton and antiproton together with the differential cross‐section dσ/dx allows us to compare the data with a production mechanism involving quark‐antiquark and gluon‐gluon interactions. The cosΘ* distribution of the same J/ψ data have also been analysed and results will be presented. Finally we have observed T production from 150 GeV/c incident pions.

Abstract

From π- interactions at 150 GeV/c on a heavy target, we present the final analysis of the dimuon decay angular distribution in the mass interval 4.5–8.5 GeV/c2. Results are presented and discussed in various reference frames and are also given in terms of the density matrix elements. Finally the possible contribution of higher-twist effects at largex1 is discussed; we find that our data are not compatible with higher twist contributions as proposed by the Berger and Brodsky Model.

Abstract

The detector presented is designed to measure the proton e.m. form factors by measuring e+e− pairs produced in pp annihilations at low energy or at rest. In this paper the apparatus is described in detail, with emphasis on how to achieve a suppression factor of about 1010 of the hadronic background.

Abstract

A detailed study ofJ/ψ hadronic production has been performed in a high statistics experiment (more than 1.5 106J/ψ observed in their dimuon decay mode). Data have been taken with incident π±,K±,p±, on hydrogen and platinum targets, at 150, 200 and 280 GeV/c. We find from the observed nuclear dependance of the cross sections, that about 18% of theJ/ψ are produced diffractively. Using known structure functions of the quarks in the nucleon and in the pion, we derive estimations for the gluon structure functions.

Abstract

The reaction p p→K + K − has been studied for incident antiproton momenta between 1.3 and 1.5 GeV/c. A continuous scan has been made for invariant masses of the p p system between 2220 and 2240 MeV/c2 with a resolution of 0.6 MeV/c2 in the ξ (2230) region. No structure has been observed. Upper limits are given.

Abstract

We present the final analysis of the nuclear effects on the cross section of dimuon production, using simultaneously a hydrogen and a platinum target in a 150, 200 and 280 GeV pion beam. For the dimuon mass interval 4.1 to 8.5 GeV, the ratio of the cross sections is in agreement with the Drell-Yan model within a 10% error, mainly due to systematics. The variation of this ratio with the dimuon mass, x 1 and x 2 is also in good agreement, and no variation with the transverse momentum is observed.

Abstract

Direct photon production has been studied by an experiment performed with the NA3 spectrometer at CERN, using incident negative and positive beams at 200 GeV/c interacting with an isoscalar Carbon target. Two different triggers have been used; one of them requires the photon conversion. The experiment is sensitive to direct photons produced with 3.0≦P T ≦6 GeV/c and center-of-mass rapidity −0.4≦y *≦1.2. Inclusive cross sections are given for incident π± and protons, and compared with second order QCD predictions; finally an estimation of the gluon structure function of the nucleon is given.

Abstract

From a study of multimuon events obtained in a high luminosity proton-platinum experiment at 400 GeV/ c , we find 5 ± 4 ψψ events, which correspond to a production cross section σ ( ψψ = 27 ± 10 pb. The observed production is compared to the ψψ events previously found in the same apparatus from incoming π − ; a comparison with QCD predictions is performed, giving a good agreement with expectations from gluon-gluon fusion. Finally, using like-sign dimuon, trimuon and quadrimuon events, we give model-dependent upper limits on beauty meson production: 2 nb/nucleon for central models, 20 nb/nucleon for diffractive production.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: The purpose of this article is to document where a lumbar plexus catheter introduced by the posterior approach will track and to evaluate the benefit of using systematic radiographic verification of catheter placement., Methods: A continuous lumbar plexus block (CLPB) by the posterior approach was performed on 169 consecutive adult patients scheduled for major hip, thigh, or knee surgery. Each catheter was verified by radiography using 10 mL contrast medium. The correct position of the catheter showed a caudally and laterally oriented contrast spindle., Results: Epidural spread of the contrast medium occurred in 3 of 169 patients (1.8%). Only 1 patient had a clinically relevant epidural spread of local anesthetic. Successful block of the lumbar plexus was achieved in the other 166 cases., Conclusions: Epidural spread of local anesthetic during lumbar plexus block should be expected to be relatively common. It can be easily identified clinically with fractionated doses of local anesthetic. The catheter tip was identified in the epidural space by radiographic verification in only 1.8% of cases. This expensive procedure is therefore unnecessary except when an unusual location is suspected, but not necessary to confirm a catheter assumed to be correctly positioned.
