The required heating power, P L H , to access the high confinement regime (H-mode) in tritium containing plasmas is investigated in JET with ITER-like wall at a toroidal magnetic field of B t = 1.8 T and a plasma current of I p = 1.7 MA. P L H , also referred to as the L-H power threshold, is determined in plasmas of pure tritium as well as mixtures of hydrogen with tritium (H-T) and mixtures of deuterium with tritium (D-T), and is compared to the L-H power threshold in plasmas of pure hydrogen and pure deuterium. It is found that, for otherwise constant parameters, P L H is not the same in plasmas with the same effective isotope mass, A e f f , when they differ in their isotope composition. Thus, A e f f is not sufficient to describe the isotope effect of P L H in a consistent manner for all considered isotopes and isotope mixtures. The electron temperature profiles measured at the L-H transition in the outer half of the radius are very similar for all isotopes and isotope mixtures, despite the fact that the L-H power threshold varies by a factor of about six. This finding, together with the observation of an offset linear relation between the L-H power threshold, P L H , and an effective heat diffusivity, χ e f f , indicates that the composition-dependent heat transport in the low confinement mode (L-mode) determines, how much power is needed to reach the necessary electron temperatures at the edge, and hence P L H .

We study localized edge turbulence in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak that appears if resonant magnetic perturbations (RMP) are applied to suppress edge localized modes (ELMs) in the high confinement mode. The concomitant density fluctuations are detected by microwave reflectometry at the outboard midplane. Two modes can be distinguished, (a) a broadband fluctuation below a threshold of the RMP field amplitude, and (b) a narrow-band quasi-coherent mode (QCM) above the threshold. The broadband fluctuation is toroidally spread out but disappears at the toroidal position of maximum E × B shear in the gradient region. Temporal and spatial correlation along field lines of the midplane density fluctuation and the divertor particle flux suggests that this mode is producing significant particle transport across the gradient region and into the divertor, hence contributing to the plasma density reduction that is often observed when applying RMP fields (the so-called ‘pump-out’ effect). The QCM is also toroidally localized, its radial extent grows with increasing RMP field amplitude, and leads to further increased divertor particle flux compared to the broadband mode. Our observations suggest that both modes not only play an important role in keeping the plasma density stationary in the absence of ELMs but also to reduce the plasma pressure such that the plasma edge becomes stable against ELMs.

This paper presents an overview of results from L–H transition experiments that were performed at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) with the aim of identifying the underlying mechanisms leading to H-mode confinement. With a broad variety of experiments and new diagnostic techniques, as well as modeling efforts, AUG has contributed substantially to improving our understanding of the L–H transition over the past years. In this review, the important roles of the ion heat channel and the edge radial electric field (E r ) in the L–H transition physics are brought into context with known dependencies of the H-mode power threshold ( P L H ), such as the impact of wall material, magnetic perturbations, and the magnetic configuration. Furthermore, experimental and theoretical results obtained at AUG on the L-mode edge turbulence are connected to the mean-field E r and its related shear flow. This led to a deeper understanding of the I-phase plasma regime, has resolved the so-called isotope effect of P L H , and led to the development of a semi-analytical model that can describe AUG’s experimental observations of the L–H transition together with the L- and H-mode density limits.

An overview of recent results obtained at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) is given. A work flow for predictive profile modelling of AUG discharges was established which is able to reproduce experimental H-mode plasma profiles based on engineering parameters only. In the plasma center, theoretical predictions on plasma current redistribution by a dynamo effect were confirmed experimentally. For core transport, the stabilizing effect of fast ion distributions on turbulent transport is shown to be important to explain the core isotope effect and improves the description of hollow low-Z impurity profiles. The L–H power threshold of hydrogen plasmas is not affected by small helium admixtures and it increases continuously from the deuterium to the hydrogen level when the hydrogen concentration is raised from 0 to 100%. One focus of recent campaigns was the search for a fusion relevant integrated plasma scenario without large edge localised modes (ELMs). Results from six different ELM-free confinement regimes are compared with respect to reactor relevance: ELM suppression by magnetic perturbation coils could be attributed to toroidally asymmetric turbulent fluctuations in the vicinity of the separatrix. Stable improved confinement mode plasma phases with a detached inner divertor were obtained using a feedback control of the plasma β. The enhanced Dα H-mode regime was extended to higher heating power by feedback controlled radiative cooling with argon. The quasi-coherent exhaust regime was developed into an integrated scenario at high heating power and energy confinement, with a detached divertor and without large ELMs. Small ELMs close to the separatrix lead to peeling-ballooning stability and quasi continuous power exhaust. Helium beam density fluctuation measurements confirm that transport close to the separatrix is important to achieve the different ELM-free regimes. Based on separatrix plasma parameters and interchange-drift-Alfvén turbulence, an analytic model was derived that reproduces the experimentally found important operational boundaries of the density limit and between L- and H-mode confinement. Feedback control for the X-point radiator (XPR) position was established as an important element for divertor detachment control. Stable and detached ELM-free phases with H-mode confinement quality were obtained when the XPR was moved 10 cm above the X-point. Investigations of the plasma in the future flexible snow-flake divertor of AUG by means of first SOLPS-ITER simulations with drifts activated predict beneficial detachment properties and the activation of an additional strike point by the drifts. We present an overview of results from a series of L–H transition experiments undertaken at JET since the installation of the ITER-like-wall (JET-ILW), with beryllium wall tiles and a tungsten divertor. Tritium, helium and deuterium plasmas have been investigated. Initial results in tritium show ohmic L–H transitions at low density and the power threshold for the L–H transition (P LH) is lower in tritium plasmas than in deuterium ones at low densities, while we still lack contrasted data to provide a scaling at high densities. In helium plasmas there is a notable shift of the density at which the power threshold is minimum ( n ¯ e , min ) to higher values relative to deuterium and hydrogen references. Above n ¯ e , min (He) the L–H power threshold at high densities is similar for D and He plasmas. Transport modelling in slab geometry shows that in helium neoclassical transport competes with interchange-driven transport, unlike in hydrogen isotopes. Measurements of the radial electric field in deuterium plasmas show that E r shear is not a good indicator of proximity to the L–H transition. Transport analysis of ion heat flux in deuterium plasmas show a non-linearity as density is decreased below n ¯ e , min . Lastly, a regression of the JET-ILW deuterium data is compared to the 2008 ITPA scaling law.

The thermal helium beam diagnostic at ASDEX Upgrade is used to infer the electron density n e and temperature T e in the scrape-off layer and the pedestal region from the emission of visible lines of the locally injected helium. The link between n e and T e and the emission is provided by a collisional radiative model, which delivers the evolution of the populations of the relevant excited states as the He atoms travel through the plasma. A computationally efficient method with just three effective states is shown to provide a good approximation of the population dynamics. It removes an artificial rise of T e at the plasma edge when using a simple static model. Furthermore, the re-absorption of the vacuum ultra-violet resonance lines has been introduced as an additional excitation mechanism being mainly important in the region close to the injection point. This extra excitation leads to a much better fit of the measured line ratios in this region for larger puff rates.

The role of the divertor configuration and divertor plasma physics on the L–H transition is poorly understood, leading to large uncertainties in predicting the L–H power threshold in future devices. This contribution reports on edge perpendicular plasma flow measurements by Doppler backscattering in JET L–H transition experiments with the outer divertor strike-point at different positions: horizontal target (HT), vertical target (VT), and in the corner configuration (between the HT and VTs). The edge perpendicular flow was found to be significantly affected by changes in the divertor configuration in the region inside the separatrix. Our results do not show evidence for the existence of a critical edge flow shear needed to achieve H-mode for different divertor configurations, with a larger shear observed for the VT configuration. No significant change in the shear flow and in the density fluctuation level is measured preceding the L–H transition in the region just inside the separatrix. The dynamics of the L–H transitions are also influenced by the divertor configuration with divertor oscillations (DOs) observed only in the HT configuration. Interestingly, DOs are associated with marked changes in the edge perpendicular flow around the separatrix.

The impact of externally applied magnetic perturbations (MPs) on fast-ion losses has been investigated by means of the light ion beam probe (LIBP) technique in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. The LIBP technique allows to experimentally infer the fast-ion orbit displacement induced by MPs via first-orbit losses using scintillator based fast-ion loss detector (FILD) measurements. The fast-ion orbit displacement against different applied MP spectra has been studied. These shots were conducted in ELM mitigated H-mode plasmas. A rigid rotation of the MP coils was applied with a frequency of 1 Hz, with an n = 2 configuration and changing the differential phase between the upper and lower set of coils (ΔΦul) on a shot-to-shot basis. Beam sources Q7 (tangential) and Q8 (radial) were used to probe different fast-ion orbits with FILD1. The measured fast-ion orbit displacement ranges from 3 to 20 mm approximately, and no qualitative difference is observed between ions from beam sources Q7 and Q8. The minimum is found for a ΔΦul ∼ 50°, which is shifted with respect to the minimum of the plasma boundary displacement, found at ΔΦul ∼ 0°. A first attempt to validate the orbit following code ASCOT—including the plasma response calculated with the MARS-F code—against these experimental measurements is performed. While the dependence of the first-orbit fast-ion displacement with ΔΦul does not match the experimental measurements, these simulations do capture other features such as the order of magnitude of the orbit displacement and the importance of the toroidal spectrum of the applied perturbation.

A synthetic fast-ion loss (FIL) detector and an imaging Heavy Ion Beam Probe (i-HIBP) have been implemented in the 3D hybrid kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic code MEGA. First synthetic measurements from these two diagnostics have been obtained for neutral beam injection-driven Alfvén Eigenmode (AE) simulated with MEGA. The synthetic FILs show a strong correlation with the AE amplitude. This correlation is observed in the phase-space, represented in coordinates (P, E), being toroidal canonical momentum and energy, respectively. FILs and the energy exchange diagrams of the confined population are connected with lines of constant E, a linear combination of E and P. First i-HIBP synthetic signals also have been computed for the simulated AE, showing displacements in the strike line of the order of ∼1 mm, above the expected resolution in the i-HIBP scintillator of ∼100 μm., This work received funding from the European Starting Grant (ERC) from project 3D-FIREFLUC and from the Spanish Ministry of Science under Grant No. FPU19/02267. Microwave heating of over-dense plasmas is routinely achieved in the stellarator TJ-K. In contrast to usually applied heating scenarios in tokamaks or stellarators, an operational regime is described where the heating occurs well below the electron cyclotron frequency but still well above the lower hybrid frequency. Microwave energy is deposited at the so-called O-resonance, accompanied by a small population of high-energy electrons with an energy up to 100 keV. These electrons are responsible for a significant toroidal net current and the occurrence of hard x-rays. Requirements for achieving this heating regime are described together with a novel scheme for plasma-electron acceleration.

The heating power to access the high confinement mode (H-mode), PLH, scales approximately inversely with the isotope mass of the main ion plasma species as found in (protonic) hydrogen, deuterium and tritium plasmas in many fusion facilities over the last decades. In first dedicated L–H transition experiments at the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak facility with the ITER-like wall (ILW), the power threshold, PLH, was studied systematically in plasmas of pure tritium and hydrogen–tritium mixtures at a magnetic field of 1.8 T and a plasma current of 1.7 MA in order to assess whether this scaling still holds in a metallic wall device. The measured power thresholds, PLH, in Ohmically heated tritium plasmas agree well with the expected isotope scaling for metallic walls and the lowest power threshold was found in Ohmic phases at low density. The measured power thresholds in ion cyclotron heated plasmas of pure tritium or hydrogen–tritium mixtures are significantly higher than the expected isotope mass scaling due to higher radiation levels. However, when the radiated power is taken into account, the ion cyclotron heated plasmas exhibit similar power thresholds as a neutral beam heated plasma, and are close to the scaling. The tritium plasmas in this study tended to higher electron heating fractions and, when heated with ion cyclotron waves, to relatively higher radiation fractions compared to other isotopes potentially impeding access to sustained H-modes. A confinement database with mainly electron-heated hydrogen plasmas from ASDEX Upgrade and Wendelstein 7-X was assembled. Stellarator confinement scaling expressions describe both standard discharges in the stellarator and L-mode plasmas in the tokamak similarly well and indicate a similar quality of energy confinement in both devices. While the energy confinement time in ASDEX Upgrade benefits from the smaller aspect ratio of the device, the transport coefficients in Wendelstein 7-X appear to be smaller possibly due to reduced average magnetic field curvature. A physics based confinement scaling is derived from a model that successfully describes transport in tokamaks. The dimensionally correct scaling has very similar parameter dependencies as the stellarator scalings and reproduces also the trends in the data from ITER L- and H-mode databases reasonably well. On the basis of this scaling, which represents the confinement times of the present data base, average tokamak L-mode and H-mode confinement is 7% lower and 76% higher, respectively.

The imaging heavy ion beam probe (i-HIBP) is a new diagnostic concept realized at the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) in order to obtain two-dimensional information about the density, the magnetic field and the electrostatic potential at the plasma edge. Although the two main components of the i-HIBP, an alkali beam based injector and a scintillator based detector, involve well-developed technologies, further developments were necessary to realize the i-HIBP at AUG. In dedicated laboratory tests, a new type of cesium source was characterized and the neutralization efficiency and properties of the primary cesium beam were found to be similar to alkali beams made of lighter elements. The use of cesium had also impact on the choice of the scintillator material, which was experimentally investigated in terms of photon yield, energy dependence and degradation revealing significant differences under irradiation with cesium ions compared to irradiation with hydrogenic beams. Due to constrictions of the AUG experiment setup, the high voltage components, the in-vessel shutter technology and the maintenance capabilities of the i-HIBP required new developments for the commissioning of the diagnostic., This work received funding from the Helmholtz Association under grant no. The ITPA multi-machine confinement database has been recently extended, in particular to account for the effect of the metallic plasma facing components installed in the ASDEX Upgrade and JET tokamaks during the last decade. Confinement data from the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak have been contributed to the ITPA confinement database since 1994. The present version, which includes data from 1994 to 2017, is described and discussed in this article. The aim of this work is to document the database before it is made public and report on the main results on the confinement properties reflected in this database. Through the transition from carbon to metallic wall, the operation at low density originally accessible with the carbon wall, has been strongly limited by the occurrence of tungsten accumulation. However, at medium and high densities, the confinement properties with the carbon and metallic walls are rather similar. The database analysis yields in both cases a rather strong plasma current dependence and a clearly negative magnetic field dependence. The density dependence is negligible, while the well-known positive impact of triangularity appears very clearly. These dependences are partly at variance with the widely-used IPB98(y,2) confinement scaling, but in agreement with the analysis of the upgraded ITPA multi-machine and JET databases. The confinement degradation observed at high density with strong gas puffing can be clearly attributed to the density profile in the outer plasma region, as reported in previous studies.

We present a study of the power threshold for L–H transitions (PLH) in almost pure helium plasmas, obtained in recent experiments at JET with an ITER-like wall (Be wall and W divertor). The most notable new result is that the density at which PLH is minimum, ${\bar{n}}_{\text{e},\mathrm{min}}$, is considerably higher for helium than for deuterium and hydrogen plasmas. We discuss the possible implications for ITER in its pre-fusion operating power phase.

An H-mode plasma state free of edge-localized mode (ELM), close to the L-H transition with clear density and temperature pedestal has been observed both at the Joint European Torus (JET) and at the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamaks usually identified by a low frequency (LFO, 1-2 kHz), m=1, n=0 oscillation of the magnetics and the modulation of pedestal profiles. The regime at JET is referred to as M-mode while at AUG as intermediate phase or I-phase. This contribution aims at a comparative analysis of these phenomena in terms of the density and temperature pedestal properties, the magnetic oscillations and symmetries. Lithium beam emission spectroscopy (Li-BES) and reflectometer measurements at JET and AUG show that the M-mode and the I-phase modulates the plasma edge density. A high frequency oscillation of the magnetics and the density at the pedestal is also associated with both the M-mode and the I-phase, and its power is modulated with the LFO frequency. The power modulation happens simultaneously in every Mirnov coil signal where it can be detected. The bursts of the magnetic signals and the density at the pedestal region are followed by the flattening of the density profile, and by a radially outward propagating density pulse in the scrape-off layer (SOL). The analysis of the helium line ratio spectroscopy (He-BES) signals at AUG revealed that the electron temperature is modulated in phase with the density, thus the I-phase modulates the pressure profile gradient. This analysis gave opportunity to compare Li-BES and He-BES density profiles at different locations suggesting a toroidal and poloidal symmetry of the density modulation. The presented results indicate that the regimes, the AUG I-phase and the JET M-mode, exhibit similar characteristics, which leads to the conclusion that the regimes are likely the same., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

The thermal helium beam diagnostic at ASDEX Upgrade can access the whole plasma edge region simultaneously with a high spatiotemporal resolution. Manifold dynamics of plasma edge transport is observed for different plasma confinement regimes, comprising L- and H-mode scenarios with type-I and small ELMs as well as ELM free EDA regimes. The measurements show that the plasma dynamics in the confined region close to the separatrix is often dominated by regular high frequency modes (10–100 kHz), whereas filaments with an intermittent occurrence rate of 0.1–2 kHz dominate in particular the far scrape-off layer (SOL). The comparison among different regimes shows a similar filamentary activity between L-mode and inter-ELM H-mode phases. An increased filamentary activity in H-mode, however, is found for rising densities n ∕ n GW . This is the case for the regime of quasi continuous exhaust (QCE) with three times higher filament velocities compared to a clean inter-ELM H-mode.

The imaging heavy ion beam probe (i-HIBP) developed at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak is a new diagnostic concept for investigations at the edge of high temperature plasmas. By means of a heavy alkali beam injector, a neutral primary beam of an energy of 70 keV is injected into the fusion plasma, where it is ionized generating a fan of secondary beams. These are deflected by the magnetic field of the tokamak and intersect a scintillator plate in the limiter shadow of the tokamak. The light pattern on the scintillator detected with a high speed camera contains radial information on the density, electrostatic potential and the magnetic field in the edge region of the plasma. For the design of the i-HIBP, a detailed beam model including the 3D tokamak magnetic field and beam attenuation effects for cesium and rubidium atoms is developed in order to find the optimum injection scheme within the limited space of the tokamak environment for maximum signal intensities. Based on the optimized injection, the arrangement of the injector outside the vacuum-vessel and the detailed design of the optical in-vessel system is determined. Helmholtz Association grant no. Alternating radiation phenomena between the inner and outer divertor regions in the sub kHz range are investigated in the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade. While the inner divertor oscillates between the onset and fluctuating state of detachment, the outer divertor oscillates between conditions where it can maintain high recycling conditions or not. The detachment state of the inner divertor determines the magnitude of the neutral flux through the private flux region, thus sets the recycling conditions at the outer divertor. In return these recycling conditions determine the particle content in the divertor, hence the detachment state at the inner divertor.

The relation between the macroscopic input power required at ASDEX Upgrade to access the H-mode Pthr and the microscopic E x B shear has been investigated via fast charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) measurements at various toroidal magnetic fields, different electron densities, and in both hydrogen and deuterium plasmas. For the H-mode onset, a threshold in the v E x B minimum, an approximation of the E x B shear, has been found. This identifies v E x B and not Er as the important player for the L-H transition. A database of measurements including CXRS, Doppler reflectometry measurements and comparison to neoclassical approximations shows a threshold v E x B of (6.7 ± 1.0) km/s ranging over a factor of three in Pthr. Using these findings, a simple derivation of the Pthr scaling is proposed giving a physics interpretation of the Bt, density and surface dependence of Pthr. The RF properties of the four ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) antennas in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak are characterized in H-mode magnetically perturbed 3D discharges. An n = 2 magnetic perturbation (MP) field is applied and rigidly rotated, which allows diagnosing the separatrix displacement and consequent coupling change. We find the antenna loading resistance to be coherently modified by the resulting non-axisymmetric plasma equilibria, thus becoming a function of the applied MP field poloidal mode spectra. We perform a detailed statistical analysis, which correlates the change in loading resistance to the fast wave R-cutoff layer movements. From it, a 1D scaling is derived that differs from previous studies evaluated in pure axisymmetric plasma conditions. This experimentally derived scaling is used to predict the average loading resistance change of the ITER ICRF antenna under applied MPs. ICRF coupling simulations using measured 1D density profiles are performed with the RAPLICASOL code, in order to investigate the predictive capabilities of numerical state of the art tools. We find that both 1D conventional scaling laws and 1D numerical simulations fail to capture the 3D physics, and can substantially overestimate the measured loading resistance change up to a factor of ∼3.

In addition to the relaxation of the pedestal, edge localised modes (ELMs) introduce changes to the divertor and scrape-off layer (SOL) conditions. Their impact on the inter-ELM pedestal recovery is investigated, with emphasis on the electron density (ne) evolution. The typical ELM cycle occurring in an exemplary ASDEX Upgrade discharge interval at moderate applied gas puff and heating power is characterised, utilising several divertor, SOL and pedestal diagnostics. In the studied discharge interval the inner divertor target is detached before the ELM crash, while the outer target is attached. The particles and power expelled by the ELM crash lead to a reattachment of the inner target plasma. After the ELM crash, the outer divertor target moves into a high recycling regime with large ne in front of the plate, which is accompanied by high main chamber neutral fluxes. On similar timescales, the inner target fully detaches and the high field side high density region (HFSHD) is formed reaching up to the high field side midplane. This state evolves again to the pre-ELM state, when the main chamber neutral fluxes are reduced later in the ELM cycle. Neither the timescale of the appearance of the HFSHD nor the increase of the main chamber neutral fluxes fit the timescale of the ne pedestal, which is faster. It is found that during the ne pedestal recovery, the magnetic activity at the low field side midplane is strongly reduced indicating a lower level of fluctuations. A rough estimation of the particle flux across the pedestal suggests that the particle flux is reduced in this period. In conclusion, the evolution of the ne pedestal is determined by a combination of neutral fluxes, HFSHD and reduced particle flux across the pedestal. A reduced particle flux explains the fast, experimentally observed reestablishment of the ne pedestal best, whereas neutrals and HFSHD impact on the evolution of the SOL and separatrix conditions. Electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) provides measurements of electron temperature (Te) and its fluctuations (δTe). However, when measuring at the plasma edge, in the steep gradient region, radiation transport effects must be taken into account. It is shown that due to these effects, the scrape-off layer region is not accessible to the ECEI measurements in steady state conditions and that the signal is dominated by the shine-through emission. Transient effects, such as filaments, can change the radiation transport locally, but cannot be distinguished from the shine-through. Local density measurements are essential for the correct interpretation of the electron cyclotron emission, since the density fluctuations influence the temperature measurements at the plasma edge. As an example, a low frequency 8 kHz mode, which causes 10%–15% fluctuations in the signal level of the ECEI, is analysed. The same mode has been measured with the lithium beam emission spectroscopy density diagnostic, and is very well correlated in time with high frequency magnetic fluctuations. With radiation transport modelling of the electron cyclotron radiation in the ECEI geometry, it is shown that the density contributes significantly to the radiation temperature (Trad) and the experimental observations have shown the amplitude modulation in both density and temperature measurements. The poloidal velocity of the low frequency mode measured by the ECEI is 3 km s–1. The calculated velocity of the high frequency mode measured with the magnetic pick-up coils is about 25 km s–1. The plasma shape, in particular the triangularity (δ), impacts on the pedestal stability. A scan of δ including a variation of heating power (P heat) and gas puff was performed to study the behaviour of edge localised modes (ELMs) and the pre-ELM pedestal stability for different plasma shapes. Generally, at higher δ the pedestal top electron density (n e) is enhanced and the ELM repetition frequency (f ELM) is reduced. For all δ, the pedestal top n e is already fully established to its pre-ELM value during the initial recovery phase of the n e pedestal, which takes place immediately after the ELM crash. The lowering of the f ELM with increasing δ is related to longer pedestal recovery phases, especially the last pre-ELM phase with clamped pedestal gradients (after the recovery phases of the n e and electron temperature (T e) pedestal) is extended. In all investigated discharge intervals, the pre-ELM pedestal profiles are in agreement with peeling-ballooning (PB) theory. Over the investigated range of δ, two well-separated f ELM bands are observed in several discharge intervals. Their occurrence is linked to the inter-ELM pedestal stability. In both kinds of ELM cycles the pedestal evolves similarly, however, the 'fast' ELM cycle occurs before the global plasma stored energy (W MHD) increases, which then provides a stabilising effect on the pedestal, extending the inter-ELM period in the case of the 'slow' ELM cycle. At the end of a 'fast' ELM cycle the n e profile is radially shifted inwards relative to the n e profile at the end of a 'slow' ELM cycle, leading to a reduced pressure gradient. The appearance of two f ELM bands suggests that the pedestal becomes more likely PB unstable in certain phases of the inter-ELM evolution. Such a behaviour is possible because the evolution of the global plasma is not rigidly coupled to the evolution of the pedestal structure on the timescales of an ELM cycle.

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme, jointly run with the EUROfusion MST1 task force, continues to significantly enhance the physics base of ITER and DEMO. Here, the full tungsten wall is a key asset for extrapolating to future devices. The high overall heating power, flexible heating mix and comprehensive diagnostic set allows studies ranging from mimicking the scrape-off-layer and divertor conditions of ITER and DEMO at high density to fully non-inductive operation (q95 = 5.5, ) at low density. Higher installed electron cyclotron resonance heating power 6 MW, new diagnostics and improved analysis techniques have further enhanced the capabilities of AUG. Stable high-density H-modes with MW m−1 with fully detached strike-points have been demonstrated. The ballooning instability close to the separatrix has been identified as a potential cause leading to the H-mode density limit and is also found to play an important role for the access to small edge-localized modes (ELMs). Density limit disruptions have been successfully avoided using a path-oriented approach to disruption handling and progress has been made in understanding the dissipation and avoidance of runaway electron beams. ELM suppression with resonant magnetic perturbations is now routinely achieved reaching transiently . This gives new insight into the field penetration physics, in particular with respect to plasma flows. Modelling agrees well with plasma response measurements and a helically localised ballooning structure observed prior to the ELM is evidence for the changed edge stability due to the magnetic perturbations. The impact of 3D perturbations on heat load patterns and fast-ion losses have been further elaborated. Progress has also been made in understanding the ELM cycle itself. Here, new fast measurements of and Er allow for inter ELM transport analysis confirming that Er is dominated by the diamagnetic term even for fast timescales. New analysis techniques allow detailed comparison of the ELM crash and are in good agreement with nonlinear MHD modelling. The observation of accelerated ions during the ELM crash can be seen as evidence for the reconnection during the ELM. As type-I ELMs (even mitigated) are likely not a viable operational regime in DEMO studies of 'natural' no ELM regimes have been extended. Stable I-modes up to have been characterised using -feedback. Core physics has been advanced by more detailed characterisation of the turbulence with new measurements such as the eddy tilt angle—measured for the first time—or the cross-phase angle of and fluctuations. These new data put strong constraints on gyro-kinetic turbulence modelling. In addition, carefully executed studies in different main species (H, D and He) and with different heating mixes highlight the importance of the collisional energy exchange for interpreting energy confinement. A new regime with a hollow profile now gives access to regimes mimicking aspects of burning plasma conditions and lead to nonlinear interactions of energetic particle modes despite the sub-Alfvénic beam energy. This will help to validate the fast-ion codes for predicting ITER and DEMO. A new thermal helium beam diagnostic has been implemented as plasma edge diagnostic at the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamak. The helium beam is built to measure the electron density ne and temperature Te simultaneously with high spatial and temporal resolution in order to investigate steady-state as well as fast transport processes in the plasma edge region. For the thermal helium beam emission line ratio spectroscopy, neutral helium is locally injected into the plasma by a piezo valve. This enabled the measurement of the line resolved emission intensities of seven He i lines for different plasma scenarios in AUG. The different line ratios can be used together with a collisional-radiative model (CRM) to reconstruct the underlying electron temperature and density. Ratios from the same spin species are used for the electron density reconstruction, whereas spin mixed ratios are sensitive to electron temperature changes. The different line ratios as well as different CRMs are tested for their suitability for diagnostic applications. Furthermore their consistency in calculating identical parameters is validated and the resulting profiles are compared to other available diagnostics at AUG. We report on first EMC3-Eirene simulations with an extended computational grid including both divertor- and main chamber (MC) 3D wall plasma-facing components (PFCs). In a first step we compare the simulations to low-power L-mode discharges systematically analyzed by Carralero et al., who observed a transition from a low- to a high density regime (Carralero et al., 2014). Case A is a configuration at low density and high clearance, while B is a high density regime configuration at medium clearance. In order to explain the upstream far-SOL n e profiles of B the MC PFCs and an enhanced transport region at ρ = 1.01 , … , 1.03 need to be included in the simulations. In a second step we compute the particle-, and power fluxes to the limiter for the realistic geometry, for limiters displaced radially inward and for a toroidally symmetric limiter. Almost the same fraction of power as that to the divertor is absorbed by the MC PFCs in the simulation of case B.

The impact of lithium (Li) on plasma performance was investigated at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, which features a full tungsten wall. Li pellets containing 1.6 × 1020 Li atoms were launched with a speed of 600 m s−1 to achieve deep penetration into the plasma and minimize the impact on the first wall. Homogeneous transient Li concentrations in the plasma of up to 15% were established. The Li sustainment time in the plasma decreased with an increasing heating power from 150 to 40 ms. Due to the pellet rate being restricted to 2 Hz, no Li pile-up could take place. No significant positive impact on plasma properties, as reported from other tokamak devices, could be found; the Li pellets rather caused a small reduction in plasma energy, mainly due to enhanced radiation. Due to pellet injection, a short-lived Li layer was formed on the plasma-facing components, which lasted a few discharges and led to moderately beneficial effects during plasma start-up. Most pellets were found to trigger type-I ELMs, either by their direct local perturbation or indirectly by the altered edge conditions; however, reliability was less than 100%.

Trabajo presentado en el 2nd European Conference on Plasma Diagnostics, celebrado en Bordeaux (Francia), del 18 al 22 de abril de 2017, A conceptual design of a new diagnostic for the simultaneous space and time resolved measurement of plasma density, potential and poloidal magnetic field fluctuations at ASDEX Upgrade is proposed. The diagnostic combines the detection techniques of standard heavy ion beam probes (HIBP) and scintillator based fast ion loss detectors (FILD), making use of an atomic beam to probe plasma parameters with high spatio-temporal resolution. This new approach takes advantage of using a neutral probe beam and a scintillator plate as detection system. The combination of these two techniques makes the diagnostic more compact than standard HIBP facilitating its integration in the machine. Simulations using an orbit following code have been carried out to investigate the viability of the proposed detection method based on the displacement of the beam strike-line on the scintillator plate. Relative plasma potential fluctuations from 10% to 100% in the potential well induce localized displacements in the strike line in the range of 0.1-1.0 mm, while poloidal magnetic field fluctuations such as those arising from edge currents produce displacements in the order of mm. The use of a scintillator screen provides virtually infinite spatial resolution together with a temporal resolution up to the MHz range, needed for the identification of internal fluctuations

In the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade the influence of a non-axisymmetric n = 2 error field on the turbulence in the far scrape-off layer of a low density L-mode discharge has been studied. There is no density pump-out with the non-axisymmetric perturbation but an increase of the scrape-off layer density at the outer midplane. While the relative ion saturation current fluctuation level in the far scrape-off layer is decreasing, the skewness rises and especially the excess kurtosis grows by a factor of 1.5–3. The frequency of intermittent events (blobs) is increasing by 50 %. Also the poloidal velocity grows with the magnetic perturbation while the typical turbulent structure size becomes smaller by a factor 5–10 about 20–25 mm outside the separatrix. The local spectral density has been calculated from a two-point measurement of the ion saturation current. It is used to derive a dispersion relation. Two poloidal propagation velocities depending on the wave number have been found. One is an upper limit for the bulk E × B velocity and the second one the lower limit of the phase velocity. The L–H transition power threshold () in full tungsten (W) wall discharges is lower by 25% compared to those with graphite (C) mix tungsten walls in ASDEX Upgrade (Ryter et al 2013 Nucl. Fusion 53 113003). The lower power threshold in the full tungsten wall discharges has been found to correlate with higher edge density as well as steeper edge density gradient. An estimate of the minimum in the neoclassical radial electric field well inside the separatrix yields a constant value for all analyzed L–H transitions at fixed toroidal magnetic field (). The decrease of the threshold power is explained by the steeper edge density gradient in the discharges with full tungsten wall.

Experiments have been performed at ASDEX Upgrade, aiming to investigate the impact of lithium in an all-metal-wall tokamak and attempting to enhance the pedestal operational space. For this purpose, a lithium pellet injector has been developed, capable of injecting pellets carrying a particle content ranging from 1.82 × 10(19) atoms (0.21 mg) to 1.64 × 10(20) atoms (1.89 mg). The maximum repetition rate is about 2 Hz. Free flight launch from the torus outboard side without a guiding tube was realized. In such a configuration, angular dispersion and speed scatter are low, and a transfer efficiency exceeding 90% was achieved in the test bed. Pellets are accelerated in a gas gun; hence special care was taken to avoid deleterious effects by the propellant gas pulse. Therefore, the main plasma gas species was applied as propellant gas, leading to speeds ranging from 420 m/s to 700 m/s. In order to minimize the residual amount of gas to be introduced into the plasma vessel, a large expansion volume equipped with a cryopump was added into the flight path. In view of the experiments, an optimal propellant gas pressure of 50 bars was chosen for operation, since at this pressure maximum efficiency and low propellant gas flux coincide. This led to pellet speeds of 585 m/s ± 32 m/s. Lithium injection has been achieved at ASDEX Upgrade, showing deep pellet penetration into the plasma, though pedestal broadening has not been observed yet.

In order to understand the mechanisms that determine the structure of the high confinement mode (H-mode) pedestal, the evolution of the plasma edge electron density and temperature profiles between edge localised modes (ELMs) is investigated. The onset of radial magnetic fluctuations with frequencies above 200 kHz is found to correlate with the stagnation of the electron temperature pedestal gradient. During the presence of these magnetic fluctuations the gradients of the edge electron density and temperature are clamped and stable against the ELM onset. The detected magnetic fluctuation frequency is analysed for a variety of plasma discharges with different electron pressure pedestals. It is shown that the magnetic fluctuation frequency scales with the neoclassically estimated E×B velocity at the plasma edge. This points to a location of the underlying instability in the gradient region. Furthermore, the magnetic signature of these fluctuations indicates a global mode structure with toroidal mode numbers of approximately 10. The fluctuations are also observed on the high field side with significant amplitude, indicating a mode structure that is symmetric on the low field side and high field side. The associated fluctuations in the current on the high field side might be attributed to either a strong peeling part or the presence of non-adiabatic electron response.

Limit-cycle oscillations (LCOs) close to the power threshold of L- to H-mode transitions are investigated in plasmas of ASDEX Upgrade. During this phase, referred to as I-phase, a strong magnetic activity in the poloidal magnetic field B ⋅ θ with an up–down asymmetry is found. In some cases, the regular LCOs during I-phase transition smoothly into a phase with intermittent bursts which have similar properties to type-III edge localised modes (ELMs). Indications of precursors during the intermittent phase as well as in the regular LCO phase point to a common nature of the I-phase and type-III ELMs. The LCO frequency measured in a set of discharges with different plasma currents and magnetic fields scales as f ∼ ( B t 1 / 2 I p 3 / 2 ) / ( n T ) .

Intense Langmuir-probe measurements were carried out in the toroidal low-temperature plasma of the torsatron TJ-K in order to investigate the origin and dynamics of intermittent transport events, so-called blobs, at the transition from closed to open field lines. The statistical properties of the fluctuations at the plasma boundary agree with observations made in fusion edge plasmas. Blobs were found to be generated locally through a change in turbulence drive across the separatrix. The non-linear spectral energy transfer from small-scale fluctuations into large-scale flows was measured with a 128-probe array. The results point to the transfer being a key loss channel for turbulence energy leading to a reduction in turbulent transport. Earlier observations [M.A. Pedrosa et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 215003 (2008)] of enhanced long-range correlations in the plasma potential through externally induced shear flows in TJ-II stellarator were verified. Density fluctuations in I-mode discharges in ASDEX Upgrade are studied. The I-mode specific weakly coherent mode (WCM) appears at the transition from the L to I-mode. The WCM but also the turbulence in general are strongly modulated by a low frequency mode which can be related to the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM). The GAM induces an energy transfer away from the central WCM frequency, indicating an underlying instability responsible for the WCM. During the I-mode magnetic fluctuations close to the WCM frequency are intensified, which can be assigned to the geodesic Alfvénic oscillation. The geodesic Alfvénic oscillation is already present in the L-mode, and does not follow changes of frequency of the WCM, therefore it is not responsible for the WCM.

The formation of plasma blobs is studied by analyzing their trajectories in a gyrofluid simulation in the vicinity of the separatrix. Most blobs arise at the maximum radial electric field outside the separatrix. In general, blob generation is not bound to one particular radial position or instability. A simple model of turbulence spreading for the scrape-off layer is derived. The simulations show that the blob dynamics can be represented by turbulence spreading, which constitutes a substantial energy drive for far scrape-off layer turbulence and is a more suitable quantity to study blob generation compared to the skewness.

A multidiagnostic approach, utilizing Langmuir probes in the midplane, X-point and divertor walls, along with Lithium beam and infrared measurements is employed to evaluate the evolution of the Scrape-off Layer (SOL) of ASDEX Upgrade across the L-mode density transition leading to the formation of a density shoulder. The flattening of the SOL density profiles is linked to a regime change of filaments, which become faster and larger, and to a similar flattening of the $q_{\parallel}$ profile. This transition is related to the beginning of outer divertor detachment and leads to the onset of a velocity shear layer in the SOL. Experimental measurements are in good agreement with several filament models which describe the process as a transition from conduction to convection-dominated SOL perpendicular transport caused by an increase of parallel collisionality. These results could be of great relevance since both ITER and DEMO will feature detached divertors and densities largely over the transition values, and might therefore exhibit convective transport levels different to those observed typically in present-day devices.

This article proposes a new method to evaluate basic characteristics of the dynamics of a coherent plasma structure (blob). With this method, one can evaluate the propagation angle of a blob in a two-dimensional plasma cross section as well as the blob velocity, size, and amplitude from one-dimensional data. The method is applied to blob measurements from the Lithium beam emission spectroscopy system in ASDEX-Upgrade. Statistical features of the observed blob velocities, angles of propagation, blob sizes, and amplitudes are discussed. The validity of the method is examined by comparing two values of the propagation angle that are evaluated in an independent manner.

When the electron transport barrier remains in its final shape before a type-I edge localized mode (ELM) crash in ASDEX Upgrade, ELM precursors appear as electron temperature fluctuations. In order to relate these precursors to an instability, spatial scales, parity and the cross-phase between electron temperature and radial velocity fluctuations are evaluated by means of velocimetry of measured 2D electron temperature fluctuations. A comprehensive comparison with properties of different instabilities points to microtearing modes. Bispectral analysis indicates a nonlinear coupling of these precursors to a ballooning-type mode prior to the ELM onset.

The spatio-temporal interplay between turbulence, mean and zonal flows has been investigated at the L–H and H–L transitions in the edge region of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. Close to both transitions, an intermediate phase (I-phase) characterized by ‘limit cycle like oscillations’ (LCOs) is observed in which periodic bursts of turbulence correlate with E × B flow reduction and relaxation of gradients. During the I-phase, the E × B velocity is dominated by the mean flows indicating that turbulence driven flows are small. Periodic dithers between L-mode and the phases with LCOs are also observed just before the H-mode onset where the edge density and temperature profile gradients evolve on similar timescale as the flows. Thus connection between mean and E × B flows holds during the all evolution from L-mode to H-mode demonstrating the fundamental role of the neoclassical flows in the L–H transition physics.

To investigate the binding of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) to human alpha 2-macroglobulin (alpha 2-M) and to alpha 1-antichymotrypsin (ACT).Binding analysis was evaluated by electrophoresis, Western-blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorption assay (ELISA) and size exclusion chromatography. Quantification of PSA and of different forms of alpha 2-M was performed using commercial test kits. The cleavage site of PSA in alpha 2-M was analyzed by SDS-PAGE and microsequencing.Binding of PSA to alpha 2-M is initiated by the cleavage of the peptide bond between amino acids Tyr 686 and Glu 687 of the bait region indicating a chymotrypsin-like activity of the PSA. The PSA's proteolytic cleavage triggers the transformation of alpha 2-M as detected by conformation-specific monoclonal antibodies. Kinetic analysis revealed faster binding of PSA to alpha 2-M than to ACT. The PSA bound to alpha 2-M is caged by the inhibitor and thus escapes detection by antibodies. This results in an incorrect calculation of the level of PSA when released from prostate into the blood. Complexes of PSA-alpha 2-M and PSA-ACT were found to bind to the alpha 2-macroglobulin receptor/LDL receptor-related protein (alpha 2-M-R/LRP) which may be the clearance receptor for PSA.Quantifying free PSA and PSA-ACT complexes, as routinely done in managing prostate-associated diseases, does not represent the total secretion capacity of the prostate. The proteinase inhibitor alpha 2-M has to be considered as a main contributor to PSA complex formation in the blood.
