Abstract

In Fig. 5 on p. 311 of our Phys. Lett. B 740 (2015) 303 an adjustment by 180∘ is required for the phases with respect to the L=2,M=1 wave, of the following waves: L=1,3,5 with M=1, and L=2 with M=2. After this correction (Fig. 5 (corrected) below), the extracted partial waves describe the angular distribution of the η(′) in the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frame, using Eq. (4) with implicit Condon-Shortley phase convention. The other results of our paper are not affected. The right-handed GJ coordinate system was defined by the z-axis pointing in the direction of the beam in the η(′)π− center-of-mass system and the y-axis pointing in the direction of precoilGJ×pbeamGJ.

Abstract

New results for the double spin asymmetry A1p and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g1p are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160 GeV, in particular at lower values of x. They improve the statistical precision of g1p(x) by about a factor of two in the region x≲0.02. A next-to-leading order QCD fit to the g1 world data is performed. It leads to a new determination of the quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin, ΔΣ, ranging from 0.26 to 0.36, and to a re-evaluation of the first moment of g1p. The uncertainty of ΔΣ is mostly due to the large uncertainty in the present determinations of the gluon helicity distribution. A new evaluation of the Bjorken sum rule based on the COMPASS results for the non-singlet structure function g1NS(x,Q2) yields as ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants |gA/gV|=1.22±0.05 (stat.)±0.10 (syst.), which validates the sum rule to an accuracy of about 9%.

Abstract

Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

Abstract

A search for the exclusive production of the Zc±(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±. The data cover the range from 7 GeV to 19 GeV in the centre-of-mass energy of the photon–nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Zc±(3900)→J/ψπ±)×σγN→Zc±(3900)N/σγN→J/ψN of 3.7×10−3 has been established at the confidence level of 90%. Keywords: COMPASS, Zc(3900), Photoproduction, Tetraquark

Abstract

Exclusive production of ηπ− and η′π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2,4,6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η′π− over ηπ− is found for the L=1,3,5 waves, which carry non-qq¯ quantum numbers. The L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η′π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2 are different.

Abstract

A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH3) targets is presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year 2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a 160 GeV/c muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about four the overall statistics with respect to the previously published data taken in the year 2007. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation.

Abstract

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS longitudinally polarised muon beam at 160 GeV/c and a 6LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations cos⁡ϕh, cos⁡2ϕh and sin⁡ϕh were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables x, z or pTh and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the cos⁡ϕh and cos⁡2ϕh modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Abstract

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons ω and ϕ is measured with a 190 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable xF of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on xF and on the invariant mass MpV of the system formed by fast proton pfast and vector meson V is discussed in terms of diffractive production of pfastV resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element ρ00 of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on xF and on MpV are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to ω production which are absent in the case of the ϕ meson. Removing the low-mass MpV resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of xF.

10. DEA-registered clinical pharmacist practitioners: Progressing practice to increase patient care access

Abstract

Purpose This descriptive review aims to describe the impact of controlled substance prescriptive authority (CSPA) among Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)–registered clinical pharmacist practitioners (pharmacists) within the Veterans Health Administration (VA). The practice perspectives of pharmacists with CSPA are also reviewed. A 3-part methodology included identification and query of DEA-registered pharmacists, practice impact data analysis, and time and motion prescribing analysis. Summary Between quarter 1 of fiscal year 2018 and quarter 2 of fiscal year 2022, the number of DEA-registered pharmacists in the VA grew by 314%, from 21 to 87 pharmacists. Pharmacists in pain management and mental health reported benefits of CSPA, with the most common being practice autonomy (93%), increased efficiency (92%), and reduced burden on other prescribers (89%). Initial challenges to pharmacists obtaining DEA registration included a lack of incentive (46%) and concern about increased liability (37%). A time and motion analysis demonstrated that pharmacists with CSPA saved a median of 12 minutes for prescription writing compared to those without CSPA. Conclusion There is an opportunity for DEA-registered pharmacists to meet patient care needs to fill gaps in care from physician shortages, improve health equity, and provide quality healthcare for vulnerable, underserved populations, especially in areas where controlled substance prescribing is common. To fully optimize the role of the pharmacist, it is imperative that state practice acts be expanded to include pharmacist DEA authority as part of collaborative practice and that fair and equitable payment models be established for pharmacist comprehensive medication management.

24. Meeting the needs of rural veterans through rapid implementation of pharmacist-provided telehealth management of diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

The rapid implementation of telehealth care owing to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic allowed clinical pharmacist practitioners (CPPs) within the Veterans Health Administration (VA) to continue to provide diabetes management to veterans with health care disparities, including rural veterans.This project aimed to describe the change in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in telehealth-naïve veterans with types 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) before and after the rapid implementation of CPP-provided telehealth DM management owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project also sought to describe potential health care disparities that may be addressed by the increase in telehealth use and the impact of metformin sustained action (SA) recalls.Analysis included patients receiving face-to-face DM-focused visits with a CPP before the COVID-19 pandemic (June 1, 2019, to December 1, 2019) who transitioned to telehealth care via telephone or VA Video Connect during the COVID-19 pandemic (June 1, 2020, to December 1, 2020). One or more HbA1c readings within each time frame was required for inclusion. Patients were excluded if previously enrolled in VA telehealth DM management.The rapidly implemented telehealth management of DM provided by VA CPPs was observed to maintain or improve HbA1c control in 84.2% of patients. During the same time frame, 10.9% of patients were taken off metformin SA secondary to national drug recalls. In total, 76% of patients were from rural communities and52% of patients traveled greater than 50 miles round trip to receive face-to-face DM care before the pandemic.Glycemic control was improved or maintained for most patients who were rapidly converted to pharmacist-provided telehealth DM management during the COVID-19 pandemic. A large majority of rural patients were reached as a result of CPP-provided telehealth care. This provides evidence to support the continued widespread telehealth utilization to effectively manage DM and reach veterans with health care disparities, particularly rural communities.

Abstract

This paper describes the technical specifications of the extensions made to the middle-atmospheric lidar facility at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Kühlungsborn, Germany (54.12° N, 11.77° E). The upgrade complements the existing daylight-capable Rayleigh–Mie–Raman (RMR) temperature lidar with a nighttime-only RMR wind–temperature lidar. The new system comprises an independent lidar with laser, telescopes, and detectors, which is synchronized with and adapted to the (old) temperature lidar. As a result, with the combination of RMR lidars the atmosphere is probed with three (vertical and tilted) beams. This work intends to highlight the recent innovations in the construction of a Doppler–Rayleigh lidar system using the single-edge iodine-cell technique, which allows for the simultaneous measurement of wind, temperature, and aerosols. We will detail supporting subsystems that allow for a high degree of lidar automation and concisely provide key technical information about the system that will support readers in the development of additional RMR wind–temperature lidar systems. We show an example of time-resolved temperature and wind soundings reaching up to ∼ 90 km. These data agree well with ECMWF-IFS profiles between 35 and ∼ 50 km but show a much larger variability above. In the companion article, we will present the algorithm design and uncertainty budgets associated with the data processing chain.

We present the first measurements of simultaneous horizontal and vertical winds using a new lidar system developed at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Kühlungsborn, Germany (54.12° N, 11.77° E), for the concept of Vertical And Horizontal COverage by LIdars (VAHCOLI). We describe the technical details of a multi-field-of-view (MFOV) upgrade, which allows the measurement of wind dynamics in the transition region from microscale to mesoscale (103–104 m). The method was applied at the edge of a developing high-pressure region, covering altitudes between 3 and 25 km. Comparisons between the lidar measurements and data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) show excellent agreement for the meridional wind component along the north beam of the lidar, which is better than 0.30±0.33 m s−1, while along the south beam, a higher deviation with -0.93±0.73 m s−1 is observed. Measurements of vertical wind show a significant underestimation of this component by ECMWF. Comparison of Aeolus winds to the lidar winds projected to the Aeolus viewing direction shows good agreement, with results better than -0.12±3.31 m s−1. The capability of the MFOV lidar to explore small-scale asymmetries in the wind field is shown by a comparison of the north and south field of view, where we observe a wind asymmetry in the meridional winds, which is also present in ECMWF but underestimated by a factor of approximately 4.

Abstract

We connect tropospheric deep convective events over western Europe, as measured by the 8.1 µm radiance observations from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on NASA's Aqua satellite, to horizontal brightness temperature variance in the 4.3 µm AIRS channel (maximum sensitivity at around 40 km) and temperature perturbations in vertical lidar profiles (between 33-43 km) over Kühlungsborn, Germany (54.12∘ N, 11.77∘ E). Although the lidar and AIRS are sensitive to different parts of the gravity wave spectrum, they both capture the same peaks in gravity wave activity tied to convection. This suggests that a broad range of vertical wavelengths is present in the convective gravity waves. To account for wave propagation conditions from the troposphere to the stratosphere, we also consider the horizontal winds in the troposphere and stratosphere using the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) operational analysis. In this work, we highlight sporadic peaks in gravity wave activity in summer greatly exceeding those typical of summer, which is generally a season with lower wave activity compared to winter. Although these events are present in roughly half of the years (between 2003 and 2019), we focus our study on two case study years (2014 and 2015). These case study years were chosen because of the high cadence of lidar soundings close in time to the convective events. Abstract

We present a thorough investigation into the accuracy and reliability of gravity wave (GW) spectral estimation methods when dealing with observational gaps. GWs have a significant impact on atmospheric dynamics, exerting influence over weather and climate patterns. However, empirical atmospheric measurements often suffer from data gaps caused by various factors, leading to biased estimations of the spectral power-law exponent (slope) β. This exponent describes how the energy of GWs changes with frequency over a defined range of GW scales. In this study, we meticulously evaluate three commonly employed estimation methods: the fast Fourier transform (FFT), generalized Lomb–Scargle periodogram (GLS), and Haar structure function (HSF). We assess their performance using time series of synthetic observational data with varying levels of complexity, ranging from a signal with one frequency to a number of superposed sinusoids with randomly distributed wave parameters. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the advantages and limitations of these methods, our aim is to provide a valuable roadmap for selecting the most suitable approach for accurate estimations of β from sparse observational datasets.

B 740 (2015) 303 an adjustment by 180 ∘ is required for the phases with respect to the L = 2 , M = 1 wave, of the following waves: L = 1 , 3 , 5 with M = 1 , and L = 2 with M = 2 . After this correction (Fig. 5 (corrected) below), the extracted partial waves describe the angular distribution of the η ( ′ ) in the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frame, using Eq. (4) with implicit Condon-Shortley phase convention. The other results of our paper are not affected. The right-handed GJ coordinate system was defined by the z-axis pointing in the direction of the beam in the η ( ′ ) π − center-of-mass system and the y-axis pointing in the direction of p recoil GJ × p beam GJ .

Abstract

Our understanding of muscle glycosylation to date has derived from studies in mouse models and a limited number of human lectin histochemistry studies. As various therapeutic approaches aimed at treating patients with muscular dystrophies are being translated from rodent models to human, it is critical to better understand human muscle glycosylation and relevant disease-specific differences between healthy and dystrophic muscle. Here, we report the first quantitative characterization of human muscle glycosylation, and identify differentiation- and disease-specific differences in human muscle glycosylation. Utilizing a panel of 13 lectins with varying glycan specificities, we surveyed lectin binding to primary and immortalized myoblasts and myotubes from healthy and dystrophic sources. Following differentiation of primary and immortalized healthy human muscle cells, we observed increased binding of Narcissus pseudonarcissus agglutinin (NPA), PNA, MAA-II and WFA to myotubes compared to myoblasts. Following differentiation of immortalized healthy and dystrophic human muscle cells, we observed disease-specific differences in binding of NPA, Jac and Tricosanthes japonica agglutinin-I (TJA-I) to differentiated myotubes. We also observed differentiation- and disease-specific differences in binding of NPA, Jac, PNA, TJA-I and WFA to glycoprotein receptors in muscle cells. Additionally, Jac, PNA and WFA precipitated functionally glycosylated α-DG, that bound laminin, while NPA and TJA-I did not. Lectin histochemistry of healthy and dystrophic human muscle sections identified disease-specific differences in binding of O-glycan and sialic acid-specific lectins between healthy and dystrophic muscle. These results indicate that specific and discrete changes in glycosylation occur following differentiation, and identify specific lectins as potential biomarkers sensitive to changes in healthy human muscle glycosylation.

Abstract

Aim. Was the analysis prospective follow-up data of children undergoing long conjugational jaundice at an early age.Materials and methods. The analysis of medical documentation data (the form-112) outpatient care, 87 children, 41 of them a boy and 46 girls. All patients in the first three months of life had a clinical and laboratory-confirmed indicators of long conjugational jaundice. All the examinees were divided into 4 main clinical groups according to the periods of childhood: group 1 (1 to 3 years) – 21 children; group 2 (from 4 to 6 years) – 23 of the child; 3 group (7 to 11 years) – 21 children; 4 group (12 to 17 years) – 22 subject. All patients underwent clinical, laboratory and instrumental examinations, sonographic examination of the abdominal cavity in dynamic monitoring, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EFGDS).Results. Patients who had at an early age the signs of impaired conjugation of bilirubin, are at risk for the development of the pathology of the gastro-biliary system. The presence of anatomical peculiarities of structure of gall bladder and biliary tract lead to the appearance of clinical manifestations at the age of 4 years and older. Special attention pediatricians and gastroenterologists should be focused on patients of school age where there is a pain syndrome characterized by persistent, regular presence, amid signs violations of the outflow of bile, presence of possible infection with H. pylori, and provoked by defects in the supply. In this period you can observe the appearance and progression of neurological symptoms, often accompanied by pathology of the gastro-biliary system. Conclusion. When analysing follow-up data of children who had a protracted conjugational jaundice in the first months of life, it is revealed that everything observed in the different age periods had evidence of violations of the gastrointestinal tract, require continuous long-term dynamic monitoring of a gastroenterologist and pediatrician.

42. Greenhouse gas effects on the solar cycle response of water vapour and noctilucent clouds

Abstract

The responses of water vapour (H2O) and noctilucent clouds (NLCs) to the solar cycle are studied using the Leibniz Institute for Middle Atmosphere (LIMA) model and the Mesospheric Ice Microphysics And tranSport (MIMAS) model. NLCs are sensitive to the solar cycle because their formation depends on background temperature and the H2O concentration. The solar cycle affects the H2O concentration in the upper mesosphere mainly in two ways: directly through the photolysis and, at the time and place of NLC formation, indirectly through temperature changes. We found that H2O concentration correlates positively with the temperature changes due to the solar cycle at altitudes above about 82 km, where NLCs form. The photolysis effect leads to an anti-correlation of H2O concentration and solar Lyman-α radiation, which gets even more pronounced at altitudes below ∼ 83 km when NLCs are present. We studied the H2O response to Lyman-α variability for the period 1992 to 2018, including the two most recent solar cycles. The amplitude of Lyman-α variation decreased by about 40 % in the period 2005 to 2018 compared to the preceding solar cycle, resulting in a lower H2O response in the late period. We investigated the effect of increasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) on the H2O response throughout the solar cycle by performing model runs with and without increases in carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). The increase of methane and carbon dioxide amplifies the response of water vapour to the solar variability. Applying the geometry of satellite observations, we find a missing response when averaging over altitudes of 80 to 85 km, where H2O has a positive response and a negative response (depending on altitude), which largely cancel each other out. One main finding is that, during NLCs, the solar cycle response of H2O strongly depends on altitude.

Abstract

Changes in the T cell surface redox environment regulate critical cell functions, such as cell migration, viral entry and cytokine production. Cell surface protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) contributes to the regulation of T cell surface redox status. Cell surface PDI can be released into the extracellular milieu or can be internalized by T cells. We have found that galectin-9, a soluble lectin expressed by T cells, endothelial cells and dendritic cells, binds to and retains PDI on the cell surface. While endogenous galectin-9 is not required for basal cell surface PDI expression, exogenous galectin-9 mediated retention of cell surface PDI shifted the disulfide/thiol equilibrium on the T cell surface. O-glycans on PDI are required for galectin-9 binding, and PDI recognition appears to be specific for galectin-9, as galectin-1 and galectin-3 do not bind PDI. Galectin-9 is widely expressed by immune and endothelial cells in inflamed tissues, suggesting that T cells would be exposed to abundant galectin-9, in cis and in trans, in infectious or autoimmune conditions.

Abstract

Aim. The aim of the study was to study the clinical and epidemiological features of visceral forms of toxocariasis in children. Materials and methods. The study involved 34 children (17 boys and 17 girls from 1 to 17 years old) with a diagnosis of toxocariasis. The diagnosis was confirmed by the method of immunoenzymatic analysis (ELISA) of blood, which allows to determine the level of specific antibodies of JgG to antigens of toxocar in children. In all patients, antibodies to toxocaram were found in a titer of 1: 800 and above, which was considered a diagnostic criterion. To exclude mixed infections, antibodies to lamblia antigens, ascarids, trichinelles and opistarchs were determined using the ELISA method of blood. Feces were studied for eggs of helminths threefold in all children. Results. Toxocarosis in children is characterized by a polymorphism of clinical manifestations. In 85.3% of patients the gastrobiliary system was damaged, dyspepsia, unstable stool, hepatosplenomegaly, which was confirmed by instrumental research methods (ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity organs, esophagogastroduodenoscopy). In addition to lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, 44.1% of patients showed lung damage, and 63.3% of patients had skin manifestations. Eye damage was noted in 10.2% of sick children, a kind of strabismus and reduced vision. Conclusion. Analysis of clinical and epidemiological data of children with toxocarosis showed that all observed had signs of impairment from the gastrointestinal tract, bronchopulmonary system and skin. In the epidemic process, preschool children are primarily involved. The decisive role in the prevention of toxocarias is played by public health education and early education of children with health skills.

Abstract

Accurate measurement of knee alignment, quantified by the hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle (varus-valgus), serves as an essential biomarker in the diagnosis of various orthopaedic conditions and selection of appropriate therapies. Such angular deformities are assessed from standing X-ray panoramas. However, the limited field-of-view of traditional X-ray imaging systems necessitates the acquisition of several sector images to capture an individual's standing posture, and their subsequent 'stitching' to reconstruct a panoramic image. Such panoramas are typically constructed manually by an X-ray imaging technician, often using various external markers attached to the individual's clothing and visible in two adjacent sector images. To eliminate human error, user-induced variability, improve consistency and reproducibility, and reduce the time associated with the traditional manual 'stitching' protocol, here we propose an automatic panorama construction method that only relies on anatomical features reliably detected in the images, eliminating the need for any external markers or manual input from the technician. The method first performs a rough segmentation of the femur and the tibia, then the sector images are registered by evaluating a distance metric between the corresponding bones along their medial edge. The identified translations are then used to generate the standing panorama image. The method was evaluated on 95 patient image datasets from a database of X-ray images acquired across 10 clinical sites as part of the screening process for a multi-site clinical trial. The panorama reconstruction parameters yielded by the proposed method were compared to those used for the manual panorama construction, which served as gold-standard. The horizontal translation differences were 0:43 ± 1:95 mm 0:26 ± 1:43 mm for the femur and tibia respectively, while the vertical translation differences were 3:76 ± 22:35 mm and 1:85 ± 6:79 mm for the femur and tibia, respectively. Our results showed no statistically significant differences between the HKA angles measured using the automated vs. the manually generated panoramas, and also led to similar decisions with regards to the patient inclusion/exclusion in the clinical trial. Thus, the proposed method was shown to provide comparable performance to manual panorama construction, with increased efficiency, consistency and robustness.

Abstract

A new academic year began in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to allow for in-person learning, a fundamental part of medical education, some medical schools grappled with how to safely move students into shared on-campus housing. The authors describe a behavior-based strategy to safely move students from all parts of the United States to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. This strategy included a school-organized phased move-in that included 14-day quarantines for students coming from states with high COVID prevalence; requiring students to sign a COVID-agreement; the use of a phone-based daily COVID risk assessment; and facilitation of safe in-person social activities with peer monitoring of adherence to behavior guidelines. This strategy resulted in no known transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in student housing between July and October of the 2020 to 2021 academic year. The authors share this strategy in the hope that colleagues at other medical schools will find it useful in utilizing similar behavior-based strategies to keep students safe in shared housing.
