1. A simple method for solving the Bussian equation for electrical conduction in rocks

Abstract

One of the most general and effective models for calculating the complex electrical conductivity and relative dielectric permittivity of rocks saturated with pore fluids is that of Bussian. Unlike most models, it is non-linear and cannot be solved algebraically. Consequently, researchers use reiterating numerical routines to obtain a solution of the equation, and then only for the real part of the solution. Here we present a different approach to the solution that uses conformal mapping in the complex plane, and implements it within MapleTM. The method is simple and elegant in that it requires, for example, only 3 lines of code in MapleTM 11 and little programming experience. The approach has been shown to be as precise as using the classical reiterating bisection method for real data implemented in C++ on an ordinary desktop computer to within a probability over 1 in 109. However, the conformal mapping approach is 52 times as fast. We show once more that the Bussian equation breaks down for low fluid conductivities, but recommend it (with the modified Archie's law) for use with rocks saturated with high salinity fluids when the matrix is conductive.

Abstract

International audience; OBJECTIVE: We aimed to report a community outbreak of an uncommon methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) originating in a maternity ward. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cases were defined by epidemiological, clinical, and microbiological investigations. Microbiological investigations included phenotypic analysis, molecular typing, and whole genome sequencing. To control the outbreak, we applied both national recommendations to prevent in-hospital transmission and the French High Council for Public Health guidelines on the management of community-acquired MRSA infections. RESULTS: Between March and July 2016, seven patients with MRSA infections were identified: six skin and soft tissue infections and one pulmonary infection, including six microbiologically confirmed infections. Infections occurred in community settings, but a link with the same maternity ward was found for all patients. All MRSA strains had a t690 spa type, were tetracycline-resistant, and produced Panton-Valentine leukocidin. All isolates belonged to the sequence type 88 (ST88). CONCLUSION: This outbreak highlights the largely underestimated risk of healthcare-associated infections in maternity wards. Healthcare workers should be aware of the importance of standard hygiene precautions and use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers for neonates and mothers.

Abstract

The zodiacal dust complex, a population of dust and small particles that pervades the Solar System, provides important insight into the formation and dynamics of planets, comets, asteroids, and other bodies. Here we present a new set of data obtained using a novel technique: direct measurements of momentum transfer to a spacecraft from individual particle impacts. This technique is made possible by the extreme precision of the instruments flown on the LISA Pathfinder spacecraft, a technology demonstrator for a future space-based gravitational wave observatory that operated near the first Sun-Earth Lagrange point from early 2016 through Summer of 2017. Using a simple model of the impacts and knowledge of the control system, we show that it is possible to detect impacts and measure properties such as the transferred momentum (related to the particle's mass and velocity), direction of travel, and location of impact on the spacecraft. In this paper, we present the results of a systematic search for impacts during 4348 hours of Pathfinder data. We report a total of 54 candidates with momenta ranging from 0.2$\,\mu\textrm{Ns}$ to 230$\,\mu\textrm{Ns}$. We furthermore make a comparison of these candidates with models of micrometeoroid populations in the inner solar system including those resulting from Jupiter-family comets, Oort-cloud comets, Hailey-type comets, and Asteroids. We find that our measured population is consistent with a population dominated by Jupiter-family comets with some evidence for a smaller contribution from Hailey-type comets. Abstract

We report on electrostatic measurements made on board the European Space Agency mission LISA Pathfinder. Detailed measurements of the charge-induced electrostatic forces exerted on free-falling test masses (TMs) inside the capacitive gravitational reference sensor are the first made in a relevant environment for a space-based gravitational wave detector. Employing a combination of charge control and electric-field compensation, we show that the level of charge-induced acceleration noise on a single TM can be maintained at a level close to 1.0 fm/s^2/sqrt(Hz) across the 0.1-100 mHz frequency band that is crucial to an observatory such as LISA. Using dedicated measurements that detect these effects in the differential acceleration between the two test masses, we resolve the stochastic nature of the TM charge build up due to interplanetary cosmic rays and the TM charge-to-force coupling through stray electric fields in the sensor. All our measurements are in good agreement with predictions based on a relatively simple electrostatic model of the LISA Pathfinder instrument., Comment: 9 Pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We study the anisotropy effects measured with INDRA at GSI in central collisions of Xe+Sn at 50 A.MeV and Au+Au at 60, 80, 100 A.MeV incident energy. The microcanonical multifragmentation model with non-spherical sources is used to simulate an incomplete shape relaxation of the multifragmenting system. This model is employed to interpret observed anisotropic distributions in the fragment size and mean kinetic energy. The data can be well reproduced if an expanding prolate source aligned along the beam direction is assumed. An either non-Hubblean or non-isotropic radial expansion is required to describe the fragment kinetic energies and their anisotropy. The qualitative similarity of the results for the studied reactions suggests that the concept of a longitudinally elongated freeze-out configuration is generally applicable for central collisions of heavy systems. Abstract

We report the first results of the LISA Pathfinder in-flight experiment. The results demonstrate that two free-falling reference test masses, such as those needed for a space-based gravitational wave observatory like LISA, can be put in free fall with a relative acceleration noise with a square root of the power spectral density of 5.2 +/- 0.1 fm s(exp -2)/square root of Hz, or (0.54 +/- 0.01) x 10(exp -15) g/square root of Hz, with g the standard gravity, for frequencies between 0.7 and 20 mHz. This value is lower than the LISA Pathfinder requirement by more than a factor 5 and within a factor 1.25 of the requirement for the LISA mission, and is compatible with Brownian noise from viscous damping due to the residual gas surrounding the test masses. Above 60 mHz the acceleration noise is dominated by interferometer displacement readout noise at a level of (34.8 +/- 0.3) fm square root of Hz, about 2 orders of magnitude better than requirements. At f less than or equal to 0.5 mHz we observe a low-frequency tail that stays below 12 fm s(exp -2)/square root of Hz down to 0.1 mHz. This performance would allow for a space-based gravitational wave observatory with a sensitivity close to what was originally foreseen for LISA.

10. Épidémiologie locale de la résistance des entérobactéries au mécillinam : adéquation aux recommandations actualisées de la SPILF

Abstract

Introduction Les recommandations actualisees en 2015 de la SPILF sur les infections urinaires (IU) communautaires rehabilitent le mecillinam (MEC) devant des arguments de tolerance, de pharmacocinetique et d’impact ecologique. L’objectif de ce travail est d’evaluer au sein d’un CHU la resistance au MEC des enterobacteries isolees d’IU communautaires et nosocomiales. Materiels et methodes Cette etude retrospective des antibiogrammes de toutes enterobacteries isolees d’ECBU a ete realisee entre janvier et juin 2016. La sensibilite a ete determinee par methode des disques en milieu gelose. Les taux de resistance au MEC ont ete analyses en fonction des caracteristiques de la population etudiee (sexe ; âge ; grossesse), du phenotype des isolats en fonction de leur resistance naturelle ou acquise aux β-lactamines et du type communautaire ou nosocomial des infections a enterobacteries productrices de β-lactamases a large spectre (EBLSE). Resultats Pour la periode consideree, les antibiogrammes de 1798 isolats ont ete analyses (16 % des ECBU recus). La resistance globale au MEC est de 12 % et constante entre les differents groupes demographiques etudies. Les enterobacteries isolees appartiennent en majorite au groupe 1 (83,6 %, dont 93,7 % d’ E. coli ) suivi des groupes 2 (12,9 %) et 3 (3,4 %), ce dernier presentant le taux de resistance le plus eleve au MEC (30 %, p p = 0,01), groupe representant 60 % des EBLSE analysees. Conclusion Un taux de resistance local au MEC ≤ 20 %, conforte son utilisation en tant que traitement probabiliste des IU communautaires non compliquees, meme en cas de presence d’EBLSE. En revanche, avec un taux de resistance globale observe > 10 %, l’utilisation probabiliste du MEC ne peut pas etre conseillee pour les IU a risques de complication mais reste neanmoins une bonne alternative lorsque l’antibiogramme documente la sensibilite. Le MEC actif, in vitro sur plus de 2/3 des souches d’EBLSE responsables d’IU nosocomiales est un candidat prometteur pour le relais per os propose sous reserves d’etudes cliniques validant son efficacite.

Abstract

One of the most general and effective models for calculating the complex electrical conductivity and relative dielectric permittivity of rocks saturated with pore fluids is that of Bussian. Unlike most models, it is non-linear and cannot be solved algebraically. Consequently, researchers use reiterating numerical routines to obtain a solution of the equation, and then only for the real part of the solution. Here we present a different approach to the solution that uses conformal mapping in the complex plane, and implements it within MapleTM. The method is simple and elegant in that it requires, for example, only 3 lines of code in MapleTM 11 and little programming experience. The approach has been shown to be as precise as using the classical reiterating bisection method for real data implemented in C++ on an ordinary desktop computer to within a probability over 1 in 109. However, the conformal mapping approach is 52 times as fast. We show once more that the Bussian equation breaks down for low fluid conductivities, but recommend it (with the modified Archie's law) for use with rocks saturated with high salinity fluids when the matrix is conductive.

Resume But de l’etude Depuis 2000, une recrudescence du nombre de cas de syphilis a ete observee en France plus particulierement en region parisienne. Le but de ce travail etait d’evaluer l’ampleur de cette evolution dans la region nantaise et son impact sur l’activite de notre laboratoire. Patients et methodes Entre 1999 et 2006, les demandes de serologies de syphilis (veneral disease research laboratory [VDRL] et Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay [TPHA]) adressees au service de bacteriologie-hygiene du CHU de Nantes ont ete analysees en fonction des resultats de ces serologies, de l’âge, du sexe du patient et du service prescripteur. Resultats Nous avons traite 32 001 prelevements sur une periode de huit ans. Le nombre de prescriptions par an a progresse de 7,5 % et celui des patients avec une serologie positive a presque ete multiplie par trois. Ces patients etaient, pour 78 %, des hommes âges en moyenne de 43,4 ans. Les demandes ayant fourni des resultats positifs provenaient en general de deux secteurs, le centre de depistage anonyme et gratuit et les services de medecine interne et maladies infectieuses. Conclusion Notre etude a mis en evidence une forte augmentation du nombre de serologies positives, depuis 2001, avec une tendance nette vers une sex-ratio essentiellement masculine. Dans notre region, cette augmentation ne connait actuellement aucun ralentissement, contrairement a ce qui a ete observe par l’Institut national de veille sanitaire(InVS), en region parisienne.

Abstract

The LISA Pathfinder mission will demonstrate the technology of drag-free test masses for use as inertial references in future space-based gravitational wave detectors. To accomplish this, the Pathfinder spacecraft will perform drag-free flight about a test mass while measuring the acceleration of this primary test mass relative to a second reference test mass. Because the reference test mass is contained within the same spacecraft, it is necessary to apply forces on it to maintain its position and attitude relative to the spacecraft. These forces are a potential source of acceleration noise in the LISA Pathfinder system that are not present in the full LISA configuration. While LISA Pathfinder has been designed to meet it's primary mission requirements in the presence of this noise, recent estimates suggest that the on-orbit performance may be limited by this `suspension noise'. The drift-mode or free-flight experiments provide an opportunity to mitigate this noise source and further characterize the underlying disturbances that are of interest to the designers of LISA-like instruments. This article provides a high-level overview of these experiments and the methods under development to analyze the resulting data., 13 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Thermal Diagnostics experiments to be carried out on board LISA Pathfinder (LPF) will yield a detailed characterisation of how temperature fluctuations affect the LTP (LISA Technology Package) instrument performance, a crucial information for future space based gravitational wave detectors as the proposed eLISA. Amongst them, the study of temperature gradient fluctuations around the test masses of the Inertial Sensors will provide as well information regarding the contribution of the Brownian noise, which is expected to limit the LTP sensitivity at frequencies close to 1mHz during some LTP experiments. In this paper we report on how these kind of Thermal Diagnostics experiments were simulated in the last LPF Simulation Campaign (November, 2013) involving all the LPF Data Analysis team and using an end-to-end simulator of the whole spacecraft. Abstract

Magnetically-induced forces on the inertial masses on-board LISA Pathfinder are expected to be one of the dominant contributions to the mission noise budget, accounting for up to 40%. The origin of this disturbance is the coupling of the residual magnetization and susceptibility of the test masses with the environmental magnetic field. In order to fully understand this important part of the noise model, a set of coils and magnetometers are integrated as a part of the diagnostics subsystem. During operations a sequence of magnetic excitations will be applied to precisely determine the coupling of the magnetic environment to the test mass displacement using the on-board magnetometers. Since no direct measurement of the magnetic field in the test mass position will be available, an extrapolation of the magnetic measurements to the test mass position will be carried out as a part of the data analysis activities. In this paper we show the first results on the magnetic experiments during an end-to-end LISA Pathfinder simulation, and we describe the methods under development to map the magnetic field on-board. Abstract

The energy-integrated reaction cross-sections of several neutron-rich nuclei ( 17−22 N, 19−24 O, 21−27 F, 23−30 Ne, 26−33 Na, 28−35 Mg, 31−38 Al, 33−40 Si, 36−42 P, 39−44 S, 42−45 Cl, 45,46 Ar), measured at intermediate energy (30–65 A MeV), via direct method, are presented. Silicon detectors have been used as the active target as well as for particles identification. The reduced strong absorption radii r 0 2 are extracted and compared to the data available from the literature. New measurements for 19 nuclei ( 27 F, 27,30 Ne, 33 Na, 28,34–35 Mg, 36−38 Al, 38−40 Si, 41−42 P, 42−44 S, 45 Cl) are revealed. From the study of the isospin dependence of the reduced strong absorption radius, a new quadratic parameterisation of the nuclear radii in the closed shell regions N = 8 and N = 28 , is proposed. According to this parameterisation, the proton/neutron rich nuclei skin effect is well described and a new anomalous structure: halo-structure or large deformation is suggested for 35 Mg and 44 S nuclei.

Abstract

Submitted to European Physical Journal A - Expérience GANIL; The odd-Z isotope 255Lr, its daughter 251Md and grand-daughter 247Es were studied in two experiments performed at GANIL and the University of Jyväskylä. The 255Lr nuclei were produced using the cold fusion-evaporation reaction 209Bi(48Ca, 2n)255Lr at a bombarding energy of 217MeV. The single-particle structure and decay properties were investigated using α, γ and electron spectroscopy. The ground-state spin and parity could be assigned for 255Lr (1/2-) and 251Md (7/2-). States corresponding to the 7/2+[633], 7/2-[514] and 1/2-[521] Nilsson orbitals were observed. Results are compared to experimental data obtained in neighbouring isotopes and to Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the Skyrme interaction SLy4 and a density-dependent pairing interaction. The position of the 1/2-[521] orbital from the spherical 2f5/2 shell is discussed.

Abstract

The nucleus-nucleus Lie`ge intranuclear-cascade+percolation+evaporation model has been applied to the 12 C+ 197 Au data measured by the INDRA-ALADIN collaboration at GSI. After the intranuclear cascade stage, the data are better reproduced when using the Statistical Multiframentation Model as afterburner. Further checks of the model are done on data from the EOS and KAOS collaborations.

Abstract

An efficient method of energy scale calibration for the CsI(Tl) modules of the INDRA multidetector (rings 6–12) using elastic and inelastic 12C+1H scattering at E(12C)=30MeV per nucleon is presented. Background-free spectra for the binary channels are generated by requiring the coincident detection of the light and heavy ejectiles. The gain parameter of the calibration curve is obtained by fitting the proton total charge spectra to the spectra predicted with Monte-Carlo simulations using tabulated cross section data. The method has been applied in multifragmentation experiments with INDRA at GSI.

Abstract

We present a new technical simulator for the eLISA mission, based on state space modeling techniques and developed in MATLAB. This simulator computes the coordinate and velocity over time of each body involved in the constellation, i.e. the spacecraft and its test masses, taking into account the different disturbances and actuations. This allows studying the contribution of instrumental noises and system imperfections on the residual acceleration applied on the TMs, the latter reflecting the performance of the achieved free-fall along the sensitive axis. Abstract

The main goal of LISA Pathfinder (LPF) mission is to estimate the acceleration noise models of the overall LISA Technology Package (LTP) experiment on-board. This will be of crucial importance for the future space-based Gravitational-Wave (GW) detectors, like eLISA. Here, we present the Bayesian analysis framework to process the planned system identification experiments designed for that purpose. In particular, we focus on the analysis strategies to predict the accuracy of the parameters that describe the system in all degrees of freedom. The data sets were generated during the latest operational simulations organised by the data analysis team and this work is part of the LTPDA Matlab toolbox. Abstract

Objective: To determine whether IV immunoglobulin (IVIg) reverses chronic visual impairment in MS patients with optic neuritis (ON). Methods: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase II trial, 55 patients with persistent acuity loss after ON were randomized to receive either IVIg 0.4 g/kg daily for 5 days followed by three single infusions monthly for 3 months, or placebo. Results: The trial was terminated by the National Eye Institute because of negative results when 55 of the planned 60 patients had been enrolled. Fifty-two patients completed the scheduled infusions, and 53 patients completed 12 months of follow-up. Analysis of this data indicated that a difference between treatment groups was not observed for the primary outcome measure, improvement in logMAR visual scores at 6 months (p = 0.766). Exploratory secondary analyses suggested that IVIg treatment was associated with improvement in visual function (including logMAR visual scores at 6 months and visual fields at 6 and 12 months) in patients with clinically stable MS during the trial. Conclusions: IVIg administration does not reverse persistent visual loss from ON to a degree that merits general use.

Abstract

Mass measurements of the N = Z nuclei 80Zr, 76Sr, 68Se were performed for the first time and a new measurement was obtained for 80Y, using the second cyclotron CSS2 of GANIL as a high-resolution spectrometer. Ions around N = Z were produced by fusion-evaporation in the inverse 58Ni (4.32 MeV A) + 24Mg and 12C reactions. New masses were measured by a time-of-flight method, with a precision of 2 · 10-6, by using well-known masses as references. Study of the double binding energy difference δV np is then performed leading to a strong N = Z Wigner effect around N = Z = 40. Knowledge of new masses in this region also plays a crucial role in the modelling of the astrophysical rp process.

Abstract

The mass-measurement programme at GANIL aims to measure the masses of heavy nuclei close to the N = Z line which is the ideal region to study neutron-proton pairing. An original direct time-of-flight mass-measurement method was developed at GANIL which uses the CSS2 cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. The masses of ions of A = 68, 76, 80 and 100 have been measured with a precision of a few 10-6. Mass measurements will be performed with the new CIME cyclotron of SPIRAL using a similar method based on the measurement of the phase of the accelerated ions for different radio-frequencies. A recently approved experiment will help develop this new technique and aims to measure the mass of 31 Ar radioactive nuclei with a precision of 10-6.

Abstract

A mass measurement experiment by a time of flight method with the SPEG spectrometer at GANIL has been performed to investigate the N = 20 and N = 28 shell closures far from stability. The masses of 31 neutron-rich nuclei in the range A = 29–47 have been measured. The precision of 19 masses has been significantly improved and 12 masses were measured for the first time. The neutron-rich Cl, S and P isotopes are seen to exhibit a change in shell structure around N = 28. Comparison with shell model and relativistic mean field calculations demonstrate that the observed effects arise from deformed prolate ground state configurations associated with shape coexistence. The evidence of an isomeric state in the 43S and its interpretation by a shell model calculation confirm the analysis of the masses and constitutes the first evidence of the predicted shape coexistence around N = 28.

Abstract

Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The prompt component at intermediate velocity of light charged particles is investigated. An improved coalescence model coupled to the intra-nuclear cascade code ISABEL is used to obtain light complex particle energy spectra and multiplicities as a function of impact parameter. The results are compared with experimental data from the 36Ar + 58Ni experiment at 95 MeV/nucleon, performed with the INDRA 4π detection system. The calculated prompt component is found to rather well reproduce proton spectra. For complex light charged particles the calculated components well populate the high energy part of spectra. Prompt emission can therefore explain the large transverse energies experimentally observed at mid-rapidity.

Abstract

Future third-generation mobile communication systems will require improved sensitivity and selectivity to support the growth in multi-media services, increased coverage, longer talk time and larger numbers of subscribers. The paper describes a transceiver for use in mobile and personal communications base transceiver stations (BTS). Key components of the transceiver are fabricated using thin film high temperature superconductor technologies to achieve, in the receiver chain, enhanced sensitivity and selectivity and, in the transmitter chain, reduced combiner losses and increased selectivity. Cryo-packaging techniques, which provide a long between-service interval are described. The cryogenic r.f. module encapsulation design features novel r.f. and thermal interconnects which obviates the need for long lossy input cables. In-situ tuning methods allow the HTS filters to be optimised at the operating temperature, 60 K, and in vacuum. The transceiver incorporates an integrated miniature Stirling-cycle cooling engine designed for a 5-watt heat lift at 60 K, over an ambient temperature range of -40/spl deg/C to +65/spl deg/C. Abstract

Isotopic effects in spectator fragmentations following heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies are investigated using data from recent exclusive experiments with SIS beams at GSI. Reactions of 12C on 112,124Sn at incident energies 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA multidetector while the fragmentation of stable 124Sn and radioactive 107Sn and 124La projectiles was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer. The global characteristics of the reactions are very similar. This includes the rise and fall of fragment production and deduced observables as, e.g., the breakup temperature obtained from double ratios of isotope yields. The mass distributions depend strongly on the neutron-to-proton ratio of the decaying system, as expected for a simultaneous statistical breakup. The ratios of light-isotope yields from neutron-rich and neutron-poor systems follow the law of isoscaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. Abstract

A new method to determine compound nuclear lifetimes at high excitation energies is proposed and applied to the system 12 C( 28 Si, α ) 36 Ar at two different bombarding energies, 190 and 277 MeV. The alpha particle spectra show a structure which directly reflects the fluctuating behavior of the first de-excitation step. Coherence widths and thus lifetimes for the nucleus 36 Ar were obtained via a correlation function analysis. The results at low excitation energies are consistent with standard statistical models while the result at high excitation energy is compatible with a theoretically predicted change of the level density parameter.

Abstract

Secondary ions of100Ag,100Cd,100In and100Sn were produced via the fusion-evaporation reaction50Cr+58Ni at an energy of 5.1 MeV/nucleon. TheA=100 secondary ions were accelerated in the second cyclotron of GANIL, which was used as a high-resolution mass spectrometer. The masses of the three latter isobars were measured with respect to the abundantly produced100Ag. The known mass of100Cd was very well reproduced and the masses of100In and100Sn were determined for the first time with precisions of 3×10−6 and 10−5, respectively.

Abstract

LISA Pathfinder (formerly known as SMART-2) is an European Space Agency mission designed to pave the way for the joint ESA/NASA Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission by testing in flight the critical technologies required for space-borne gravitational wave detection; it will put two test masses in a near-perfect gravitational free-fall and control and measure their motion with unprecedented accuracy. This is achieved through technology comprising inertial sensors, high precision laser metrology, drag-free control, and an ultra precise micro-Newton propulsion system. LISA Pathfinder (LPF) essentially mimics one arm of spaceborne gravitational wave detectors by shrinking the million kilometre scale armlengths down to a few tens of centimetres, giving up the sensitivity to gravitational waves, but keeping the measurement technology. The scientific objective of the LISA Pathfinder mission consists then of the first in-flight test of low frequency gravitational wave detection metrology. In this paper I will give a brief overview of the mission, focusing on scientific and technical goals.

Abstract

In Ar-36 + Al-27 reactions at bombarding energies E/A from 55 to 95 MeV, the mass and excitation energy of the quasi-projectile have been reconstructed at all impact parameters. Up to excitation energies E*/A of similar to 5-6 MeV, the mean kinetic energies of Z = 1 to Z = 9 fragments are in agreement with values predicted by sequential statistical decay, Above, a collective expansion energy is needed that grows with E*/A, reaching 1 to 2.2 MeV/u, depending on the de-excitation process, at E*/A similar to 10 MeV. It decreases with the fragment charge, The dominant role of excitation energy supports the scenario of thermal expansion.

Abstract

Formation and decay of hot nuclei have been studied in Zn-64 + Ti-nat collisions between 35 and 79 MeV/nucleon. The mass and excitation energy of excited quasiprojectiles are reconstructed from the kinematical characteristics of their decay products. In central collisions, excitation energies larger than 10 MeV/nucleon are reached. Comparisons with theoretical predictions indicate that a fraction of the excitation energy is associated with an isotropic radial flow.

Abstract

Sideward flow values have been determined with the INDRA multidetector for Ar+Ni, Ni+Ni and Xe+Sn systems studied at GANIL in the 30 to 100 A.MeV incident energy range. The balance energies found for Ar+Ni and Ni+Ni systems are in agreement with previous experimental results and theoretical calculations. Negative sideward flow values have been measured. The possible origins of such negative values are discussed. They could result from a more important contribution of evaporated particles with respect to the contribution of promptly emitted particles at mid-rapidity. But effects induced by the methods used to reconstruct the reaction plane cannot be totally excluded. Complete tests of these methods are presented and the origins of the ``auto-correlation'' effect have been traced back. For heavy fragments, the observed negative flow values seem to be mainly due to the reaction plane reconstruction methods. For light charged particles, these negative values could result from the dynamics of the collisions and from the reaction plane reconstruction methods as well. These effects have to be taken into account when comparisons with theoretical calculations are done., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures
