Abstract

Several neutrino detectors, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the forthcoming large-scale JUNO, rely on liquid scintillator to detect reactor antineutrino interactions. In this context, inverse beta decay represents the golden channel for antineutrino detection, providing a pair of correlated events, thus a strong experimental signature to distinguish the signal from a variety of backgrounds. However, given the low cross-section of antineutrino interactions, the development of a powerful event selection algorithm becomes imperative to achieve effective discrimination between signal and backgrounds. In this study, we introduce a machine learning (ML) model to achieve this goal: a fully connected neural network as a powerful signal-background discriminator for a large liquid scintillator detector. We demonstrate, using the JUNO detector as an example, that, despite the already high efficiency of a cut-based approach, the presented ML model can further improve the overall event selection efficiency. Moreover, it allows for the retention of signal events at the detector edges that would otherwise be rejected because of the overwhelming amount of background events in that region. We also present the first interpretable analysis of the ML approach for event selection in reactor neutrino experiments. This method provides insights into the decision-making process of the model and offers valuable information for improving and updating traditional event selection approaches.

Abstract

High energy states in the self-conjugate 16O nucleus were investigated by analyzing 13C(3He,α)12C reactions in the bombarding energy range 1.4–2.2 MeV. Thanks to a low-threshold and high-resolution array, we succeed in measuring cross sections of the decay channel where an α particle is emitted in coincidence with a 12C nucleus in the Hoyle state, leading to 4α particles in the final channel. The analysis of angular distributions indicates the occurrence of two low-spin resonant states, respectively with Jπ=2+ and 3−, at energies of ≈ 24.1 and 24.5 MeV. In this energy window, the observed branching ratios for the transition involving the emission of the Hoyle state are well larger than calculations based on barrier penetration, signaling the possible occurrence of high-energy states in 16O with a large cluster component.

Abstract

Abstract A detailed knowledge of the decay properties of the so called Hoyle state in the $$^{12}$$ 12 C nucleus ( $$E_x=7.654$$ E x = 7.654 MeV, $$0^+$$ 0 + ) is required to calculate the rate at which carbon is forged in typical red-giant stars. This paper reports on a new almost background-free measurement of the radiative decay branching ratio of the Hoyle state using advanced charged particle coincidence techniques. The exploitation, for the first time in a similar experiment, of a bidimensional map of the coincidence efficiency allows to reach an unitary value and, consequently, to strongly reduce sources of systematic uncertainties. The present results suggest a value of the radiative branching ratio of $$\Gamma _{rad}/\Gamma _{tot}=4.2(6)\cdot 10^{-4}$$ Γ rad / Γ tot = 4.2 ( 6 ) · 10 - 4 . This finding helps to resolve the tension between recent data published in the literature.

Abstract

By using freeze-out properties of multifragmenting hot nuclei produced in quasifusion central $^{129}$Xe+$^{nat}$Sn collisions at different beam energies (32, 39, 45 and 50 AMeV) which were estimated by means of a simulation based on experimental data collected by the $4\pi$ INDRA multidetector, heat capacity in the thermal excitation energy range 4 - 12.5 AMeV was calculated from total kinetic energies and multiplicities at freeze-out. The microcanonical formulation was employed. Abstract

An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 A MeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. Abstract

We report on first experimental observations of nuclear fermionic and bosonic components displaying different behaviours in the decay of hot Ca projectile-like sources produced in mid-peripheral collisions at sub-Fermi energies. The experimental setup, constituted by the coupling of the INDRA 4π detector array to the forward angle VAMOS magnetic spectrometer, allowed to reconstruct the mass, charge and excitation energy of the decaying hot projectile-like sources. By means of quantum-fluctuation analysis techniques, temperatures and local partial densities of bosons and fermions could be correlated to the excitation energy of the reconstructed system. The results are consistent with the production of dilute mixed systems of bosons and fermions, where bosons experience higher phase-space and energy density as compared to the surrounding fermionic gas. Our findings recall phenomena observed in the study of Bose condensates and Fermi gases in atomic traps despite the different scales.

Abstract

The versatility in design of redox flow batteries makes them apt to efficiently store energy in large-scale applications at low cost. The discovery of inexpensive organic electroactive materials for use in aqueous flow battery electrolytes is highly attractive, but is thus far limited. Here we report on a flow battery using an aqueous electrolyte based on the sodium salt of flavin mononucleotide. Flavins are highly versatile electroactive molecules, which catalyse a multitude of redox reactions in biological systems. We use nicotinamide (vitamin B3) as a hydrotropic agent to enhance the water solubility of flavin mononucleotide. A redox flow battery using flavin mononucleotide negative and ferrocyanide positive electrolytes in strong base shows stable cycling performance, with over 99% capacity retention over the course of 100 cycles. We hypothesize that this is enabled due to the oxidized and reduced forms of FMN-Na being stabilized by resonance structures., Redox flow batteries using organic active materials are highly sought after because of their potential to satisfy low cost and sustainability requirements. Abstract

Electrochemical and UV-VIS measurements demonstrate that the pH value of a 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-pipperidinyloxyl (TEMPOL) electrolyte significantly impacts its redox reversibility. The diffusion coefficient and kinetic rate constant of TEMPOL in neutral aqueous solution are determined and shown to be comparable to those of vanadium ions used for industrially utilized redox flow batteries (RFBs). RFBs that incorporate a TEMPOL catholyte and Zn-based anolyte have an average voltage of 1.46 V and an energy efficiency of 80.4% during the initial cycle, when subject to a constant current of 10 mA cm −2 . We demonstrate several factors that significantly influence the concentration and capacity retention of TEMPOL upon cycling; namely, pH and atmospheric gases dissolved in electrolyte. We expand upon the known reactions of TEMPOL in aqueous electrolyte and propose several concepts to improve its electrochemical performance in a RFB. Controlling these factors will be the key to enable the successful implementation of this relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly battery.

Abstract

Batteries will play critical roles in modernizing energy grids, as they will allow a greater penetration of renewable energy and perform applications that better match supply with demand. Applying storage technology is a business decision that requires potential revenues to be accurately estimated to determine the economic viability, which requires models that consider market rules and prices, along with battery and application-specific constraints. Here we use models of storage connected to the California energy grid and show how the application-governed duty cycles (power profiles) of different applications affect different battery chemistries. We reveal critical trade-offs between battery chemistries and the applicability of energy content in the battery and show that accurate revenue measurement can only be achieved if a realistic battery operation in each application is considered. The findings in this work could call for a paradigm shift in how the true economic values of energy storage devices could be assessed. Large variations exist in the revenue prediction of grid-scale storage due to uncertainties in operations of storage technologies. Here the authors integrate the economic evaluation of energy storage with key battery parameters for a realistic measure of revenues.

Abstract

In this work we prepared Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 (LNMO) using a hydroxide co-precipitation method and investigated the effect of co-modification with NH4F and Al2O3. After surface co-modification, the first cycle Coulombic efficiency of Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 improved from 82.7% to 87.5%, and the reversible discharge capacity improved from 253 to 287 mAh g–1 at C/20. Moreover, the rate capability also increased significantly. A combination of neutron diffraction (ND), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (a-STEM)/electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the changes of surface structure and chemistry after NH4F and Al2O3 surface co-modification while the bulk properties showed relatively no changes. Abstract

Pristine and Gd-doped Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) in the form of Li 4−x/3 Ti 5−2x/3 Gd x O 12 (x = 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15) were prepared by a simple solid-state reaction in air. The structural and electrochemical properties of the as-prepared powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). XRD revealed that only a small amount of the dopant can enter the lattice structure of LTO; excessive addition beyond x = 0.10 resulted in a discrete Gd 2 O 3 impurity phase. The Gd doping did not change the spinel structure and electrochemical reaction process of LTO. The average particle size of as-prepared samples ranged between 0.5 and 1.5 μm. The Gd-doped materials showed much improved rate capability and specific capacity compared with undoped LTO. In particular, Li 4−x/3 Ti 5−2x/3 Gd x O 12 (x = 0.5) exhibited the best rate capability and cycling stability among all samples. Beyond this doping level, however, Gd 2 O 3 impurity phase in the LTO led to adverse electrochemical performance. The rate capability of the anode material made from the modified powder is significantly improved when discharged at high current rates due to the reduced charge transfer resistance and fast lithium insertion/extraction kinetics.

Abstract

We present a new experimental method to correlate the isotopic composition of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) emitted at midrapidity in semiperipheral collisions with the emission timescale: IMFs emitted in the early stage of the reaction show larger values of (N/Z) isospin asymmetry, stronger angular anisotropies, and reduced odd-even staggering effects in neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) distributions than those produced in sequential statistical emission. All these effects support the concept of isospin “migration”, that is sensitive to the density gradient between participant and quasispectator nuclear matter, in the so called neck fragmentation mechanism. By comparing the data to a stochastic mean field (SMF) simulation we show that this method gives valuable constraints on the symmetry energy term of nuclear equation of state at subsaturation densities. An indication emerges for a linear density dependence of the symmetry energy.

Abstract

The kinematical coincidence method is used to extract angular distribution of elastic scattering and transfer reactions. The detected light particle energy spectra are used to extract the angular distribution with around 1° resolution in the Center of Mass (CM) system. Examples with 10Be beam are presented. Abstract

This work provides insight regarding the fundamental lithiation and delithiation mechanism of the popular lithium ion battery anode material, Li4Ti5O12 (LTO). Our results quantify the extent of reaction between Li4Ti5O12 and Li7Ti5O12 at the nanoscale, during the first cycle. Lithium titanate's discharge (lithiation) and charge (delithiation) reactions are notoriously difficult to characterize due to the zero-strain transition occurring between the end members Li4Ti5O12 and Li7Ti5O12. Interestingly, however, the latter compound is electronically conductive, while the former is an insulator. We take advantage of this critical property difference by using conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM) to locally monitor the phase transition between the two structures at various states of charge. To do so, we perform ex situ characterization on electrochemically cycled LTO thin-films that are never exposed to air. We provide direct confirmation of the manner in which the reaction occurs, which proceeds via percolation channels within single grains. We complement scanning probe analyses with an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study that identifies and explains changes in the LTO surface structure and composition. In addition, we provide a computational analysis to describe the unique electronic differences between LTO and its lithiated form.

Abstract

Temperature-dependent induction of ecdysteroid deficiency in the ecdysoneless mutant ecd 1 adult Drosophila melanogaster results in altered courtship behavior in males. Ecdysteroid deficiency brings about significantly elevated male–male courtship behavior including song production resembling that directed toward females. Supplementation with dietary 20-hydroxyecdysone reduces male–male attraction, but does not change motor activity, courtship patterns or attraction to females. These observations support the hypothesis that reduced levels of ecdysteroids increase the probability that male fruit flies will display courtship behaviors to male stimuli.

Abstract

El objetivo del estudio fue determinar las zonas aptas potenciales para el cultivo de camu camu (Myrciaria dubia H.B.K. McVaugh). Las zonas potenciales fueron determinadas al aplicar siete criterios (geologico, clasificacion de suelos, fisiografia, clasificacion de capacidad de uso mayor, textura del suelo, distancia del ro y nivel de inundacion). Tambien, se elaboro un mapa tematico por cada criterio, obteniendose de la superposicion de los mapas las zonas potenciales para el sembrado del cultivo de camu camu. Se encontro que del total de la superficie evaluada, el sector de Masisea posee tierras en condiciones aptas, regulares y no aptas para el sembrado de camu camu en porcentajes de 12,2%, 82,2% y 3,7% respectivamente. El sector de Mashangay posee tierras en condiciones aptas y regulares para el sembrado de camu camu en porcentajes de 10,7% y 88,7% respectivamente. El sector de Yarinacocha posee tierras en condiciones aptas, regulares y no aptas para el sembrio de camu camu en porcentajes de 22,1%, 43,4% y 27,9 respectivamente. Por otro lado, el sector de Pucallpillo posee tierras en condiciones aptas, regulares y no aptas para el sembrio de camu camu en porcentajes de 10,54%, 60,85 y 23,3% respectivamente. Por ultimo, el sector de Utuquinia posee tierras en condiciones aptas, regulares y no aptas para el sembrio de camu camu en porcentajes de 17,0%, 23,7% y 53,11% respectivamente.

Abstract

Aim: To verify whether, with thorough practical and theoretical training, well-controlled, non-complicated diabetic patients can safely go diving underwater with no additional medical or metabolic risks. Methods: Twelve diabetic patients participated in the study after undergoing training focused on their diabetic status. Two dives per day were scheduled during two five-day stays on the island of Ventotene (Italy). Capillary blood glucose (BG) was checked at 60, 30 and 10 minutes before diving, and corrective measures adopted if necessary, based on BG absolute levels and dynamics. A device for continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring (CGM), expressly modified for the purpose, was worn during dives. Results: Data were gathered from 90 dives; mean BG at 60, 30 and 10 minutes before diving was 205.8 ± 69.6 mg/dL, 200.0 ± 66.4 mg/dL and 200.5 ± 61.0 mg/dL, respectively. In 56 of the 90 dives, supplementary carbohydrates or insulin were necessary, but only one dive was interrupted on account of hypoglycaemic symptoms. Mean post-dive BG was 158.9 ± 80.8 mg/dL. CGM recordings showed that glucose levels gradually decreased during the dives (nadir: -19.9%). Conclusion: Experienced, well-controlled, complication-free young diabetic patients can safely go scuba diving, provided that they apply a rigorous protocol based on serial pre-dive BG measurements. The specific variables of underwater diving do not appear to involve significant additional risks of hypoglycaemia.

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy-ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. The results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model simulations favoured a moderately soft symmetry term, but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. These results have been confirmed by an independent analysis based on the Tübingen QMD simulations. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration. We discuss experimental data concerning 48Ca+48Ca and 42Ca+54Fe reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon obtained by using the 4pi multi-detector Chimera. Effects due due to the different neutron to proton ratios (N/Z) of the two systems have been investigated. Charge distributions of forwardly emitted fragments show even-odd staggering whose amplitude is larger for the neutron poor system. Moreover, the neutron excess of the total system influence the evolution of fusion-like sources formed in semi-central collisions. In particular, for the neutron rich system, the relative emission yield of heavy residues is larger, while multi-fragmentation and binary-like events prevail in the neutron poor system

27. Understanding the Role of NH₄F and Al₂O₃ Surface Co-modification on Lithium-Excess Layered Oxide Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O₂

Abstract

In this work we prepared Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 (LNMO) using a hydroxide co-precipitation method and investigated the effect of co-modification with NH4F and Al2O3. After surface co-modification, the first cycle Coulombic efficiency of Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 improved from 82.7% to 87.5%, and the reversible discharge capacity improved from 253 to 287 mAh g(-1) at C/20. Moreover, the rate capability also increased significantly. A combination of neutron diffraction (ND), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (a-STEM)/electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the changes of surface structure and chemistry after NH4F and Al2O3 surface co-modification while the bulk properties showed relatively no changes. These complex changes on the material's surface include the formation of an amorphous Al2O3 coating, the transformation of layered material to a spinel-like phase on the surface, the formation of nanoislands of active material, and the partial chemical reduction of surface Mn(4+). Such enhanced discharge capacity of the modified material can be primarily assigned to three aspects: decreased irreversible oxygen loss, the activation of cathode material facilitated with preactivated Mn(3+) on the surface, and stabilization of the Ni-redox pair. These insights will provide guidance for the surface modification in high-voltage-cathode battery materials of the future.

Abstract

We discuss experimental data concerning 40,48Ca+ 40,48Ca reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon; the 4π multi-detector Chimera has been used as detection device. Effects that can be attributed to the neutron to proton ratios (N/Z) degree of freedom have been investigated. From the analysis of experimental data it seems that the neutron richness of the interacting system plays an important role on the evolution of fusion-like sources formed in semi-central collisions. In particular, it is observed that the larger is the neutron content and the larger is the emission of heavy residues. Experimental data have been compared with CoMD-II model calculations; a moderately stiff symmetry energy should be used to reproduce satisfactorily the data. A thermodynamical analysis on fusion-like sources has been also performed. In semi-peripheral collisions, isospin diffusion signals have been found. They have been investigated by analyzing isobaric emission ( 7Li/7Be) of quasi-projectile sources. Experimental data indicate that an incomplete N/Z mixing is reached during the interaction phase.

Abstract

A new method to extract high resolution angular distributions from kinematical coincidence measurements in binary reactions is presented. Kinematics is used to extract the center of mass angular distribution from the measured energy spectrum of light particles. Results obtained in the case of 10Be+p→9Be+d reaction measured with the CHIMERA detector are shown. An angular resolution of few degrees in the center of mass is obtained. The range of applicability of the method is discussed.

International audience; Ar+Ni reactions have been studied to fix some constraints on the isospin dependence of the level density. The coupling of INDRA and VAMOS apparatuses allows to obtain highly exclusive data . The preliminary results on the Ar+Ni fusion-evaporation cross sections suggest a dependence on the entrance channel mass asymmetry.

Abstract

International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or lightcomplex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energieshas been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of thesymmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturationdensities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows ofneutrons and light charged particles were measured for 197Au+197Au,96Zr+96Zr and 96Ru+96Ru collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon with theLarge Area Neutron Detector LAND as part of a setup with severaladditional detection systems used for the event characterization. Flowresults obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictionsof the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to lineardensity dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlierFOPI-LAND data.

Abstract

CHIMERA is a 4π multidetector for charged particles available at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN‐LNS). A new method to measure the time scale of the emission of nuclear fragments is described, together with some applications in the field of the isospin dynamics of heavy‐ion collisions. Competition between fusion‐like and binary reactions near the energy threshold for nuclear multifragmentation is discussed. Opportunities are pointed out to use the detector at low and intermediate energies using the kinematical‐coincidence method.

Abstract

Oropharyngeal candidiasis caused by various species of Candida is one of the most common infections in HIV seropositive or AIDS patients. Drug resistance among these yeasts is an increasing problem. We studied the frequency of resistance profile to fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, amphotericin B and terbinafine of 137 isolates of Candida sp. From HIV positive or AIDS patients with oropharyngeal candidiasis at Instituto de Inmunologia, U.C.V. and the Hospital “Jose Ignacio Baldo”, Caracas Venezuela, using the well diffusion susceptibility test (Magaldi et al.). We found that nearly 10% of C. albicans isolates were primarily fluconazole resistant, 45% of C. albicans isolates from patients with previous treatment were resistant to fluconazole, of which 93% showed cross-resistance to itraconazole, and even about 30% of C. tropicalis (n = 13) were resistant to fluconazole and/or itraconazole. To this respect, several recent reports have been described antifungal cross-resistance among azoles. Therefore, we consider that C. tropicalis should be added to the growing list of yeast in which antifungal drug resistance is common. This report could be useful for therapeutic aspect in AIDS patients with oral candidiasis.

Abstract

This article describes the crystal selection and quality control utilized to develop and calibrate a high resolution array of CsI(TI) scintillator crystals for the detection of energetic charged particles. Alpha sources are used to test the light output variation due to thallium doping gradients. Selection of crystals with better than 1% non-uniformity in light output is accomplished using this method. Tests with 240 MeV alpha beam reveal that local light output variations within each of the tested CsI(TI) crystals limit the resolution to about 0.5%. Charge and mass dependences in the energy - light output relationship are determined by calibrating with energetic projectile fragmentation beams., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We measure the absorption spectrum of a rhodamine 101 solution in ethanol in the spectral region 555–583 nm as a function of the incident light fluence. We show that increasing the field fluence results in a blueshift of the spectrum and absorption depletion with no spectral broadening. These results are explained in terms of a model that includes the influence of the solvent over the spectrum of the dye molecule.

Abstract

In the last five years, as HAART has become standard therapy in HIV seropositive or AIDS patients, changes have been noted in the numbers and types of opportunistic fungal infections in these cohorts of patients. Particularly, oropharyngeal candidiasis have become rare in HIV infected patients since the introduction of new anti-HIV drugs of the protease inhibitors type. At the Immunology Institute of the Universidad Central de Venezuela the most frequent protease inhibitors (PIs) used for the treatment of these patients have been: Nelfinavir (ViraceptTM, Roche),Indinavir (Crixivan® Merck),Ritonavir (Norvir®, Abbott),Saquinavir (Fortovase®, Roche).Recently, we observed that recurrent candidiasis was less frequent and no Candidacould be isolated in our patients. A direct relation to the PIs was suspected. In order to assess the “in vitro” antifungal activity of the afore mentioned protease inhibitors on Candida sp., we used both the well diffusion test and the NCCLS broth microdilution test to assay 100 Candida sp. isolates from HIV seropositive or AIDS patients with syntomatic oropharyngeal Candida infection. In general, the data obtained with the well diffusion test were in agreement with those obtained by the broth microdilution test. All 100 isolates were susceptible to Saquinavir and 32 were susceptible to Indinavir using the NCCLS microdilution test,while 97 were susceptible to Saquinavir and 52 to Indinavir by the well diffusion test. From 17 C. albicans resistant to fluconazole, all were susceptible to Saquinavir by the NCCLS micro method and 16 by the well diffusion test. Our results showed anticandidal activity “in vitro” of PIs, mainly Saquinavir.

Abstract

International audience; Multi-breakup processes for the $^{124}$Sn+$^{64}$Ni system at 35 MeV/nucleon have been studied with the forward part of the CHIMERA detector. An extensive comparison between experimental data corresponding to almost complete ternary events and constrained molecular dynamics (CoMD-II) calculations suggests different characteristic times in the selected processes. This is in agreement with previous studies of the same reaction already published concerning the prompt intermediate-mass-fragment emission. Stimulated by CoMD-II calculations, we investigate the existence of more complex dynamical multi-breakup processes occurring on the same time scale. A detailed study of the rotational dynamics leading to slower dynamical fission processes is also presented.

48. Genomic association of the imprinting maintenance factor ZFP57 and associated chromatin regulators in murine embryonal stem cells at imprinted and non imprinted loci and its expression in the developing mouse embryo

Abstract

Several lines of evidence have provided clues for the pivotal role played by the KRAB-containing zinc finger protein ZFP57 in the maintenance of the parent of origin-dependent epigenetic state, DNA methylation and histone tails specific modifications, of the hundreds imprinted loci in mouse which include several non coding RNAs. ZFP57 associates with KAP1, a general co-repressor of the abundant KRAB-ZFPs family, which acts as a scaffold for the recruitment of chromatin modifiers that include the histone H3 methyltransferase SETDB1 and heterochromatin protein-1 (HP1) isoforms, thus promoting H3 trimethylation at lysine9 and chromoproteins recruitment at targeted sites. DNA methyltransferases are also present in KAP1 complexes. This finding correlates with the requirement for ZFP57 to maintain DNA methylation at imprinting control regions (ICRs). In this work we established the genome wide occupancy of ZFP57, along with associated chromatin modifiers KAP1, Hp1 and tri-methyl H3K9 and correlated it with the DNA methylation profile in murine embryonal stem cells (ESC). The data show that the majority of ZFP57 bound sites reside at DNA methylated non-imprinted loci, of which several encompass non-coding RNAs, implying a wider role for this factor in the shaping of the epigenome, notably at germ-line DNA methylated CpG islands and repeated retrotrasposons. Further, we show that ZFP57, while strongly expressed in ES cells and down regulated during differentiation, is also expressed at several sites during embryo development. The strong and sustained expression in the nervous system of the developing murine embryo is paralleled by association of the factor to ICRs extending its potential role beyond that of imprints maintenance at pre-implantation. We will report also on data suggesting a potential role for ZFP57 in the in vitro differentiation of ES cells toward the neural fate.

© 2014 American Chemical Society.We have determined the electrochemical characteristics of the high voltage, high capacity Li-ion battery cathode material Li[Li2/12Ni3/12Mn7/12]O2 prepared using three different synthesis routes: sol-gel, hydroxide coprecipitation, and carbonate coprecipitation. Each route leads to distinct morphologies and surface areas while maintaining the same crystal structures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements reveal differences in their surface chemistries upon cycling, which correlate with voltage fading. Indeed, we observe the valence state of Mn on the surface to decrease upon lithiation, and this reduction is specifically correlated to discharging below 3.6 V. Furthermore, the data shows a correlation of the formation of Li2CO3 with the Mn oxidation state from the decomposition of electrolyte. These phenomena are related to each material's electrochemistry in order to expand upon the reaction mechanisms taking place-specifically in terms of the particle morphology produced by each synthetic approach.

Abstract

Breakup temperatures were deduced from double ratios of isotope yields for target spectators produced in the reaction Au + Au at 1000 MeV per nucleon. Pairs of $^{3,4}$He and $^{6,7}$Li isotopes and pairs of $^{3,4}$He and H isotopes (p, d and d, t) yield consistent temperatures after feeding corrections, based on the quantum statistical model, are applied. The temperatures rise with decreasing impact parameter from 4 MeV for peripheral to about 10 MeV for the most central collisions. The good agreement with the breakup temperatures measured previously for projectile spectators at an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon confirms the observed universality of the spectator decay at relativistic bombarding energies. The measured temperatures also agree with the breakup temperatures predicted by the statistical multifragmentation model. For these calculations a relation between the initial excitation energy and mass was derived which gives good simultaneous agreement for the fragment charge correlations. The energy spectra of light charged particles, measured at $\theta_{lab}$ = 150$^{\circ}$, exhibit Maxwellian shapes with inverse slope parameters much higher than the breakup temperatures. The statistical multifragmentation model, because Coulomb repulsion and sequential decay processes are included, yields light-particle spectra with inverse slope parameters higher than the breakup temperatures but considerably below the measured values. The systematic behavior of the differences suggests that they are caused by light-charged-particle emission prior to the final breakup stage. PACS numbers: 25.70.Mn, 25.70.Pq, 25.75.-q
