Abstract

We review aspects of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectral distortions which do not appear to have been fully explored in the literature. In particular, implications of recent evidences of heating of the intergalactic medium (IGM) by feedback from active galactic nuclei are investigated. Taking also into account the IGM heating associated to structure formation, we argue that values of the y parameter of several × 10-6, i.e. a factor of a few below the COBE/FIRAS upper limit, are to be expected. The Compton scattering by the re-ionized plasma also re-processes primordial distortions, adding a y-type contribution. Hence no pure Bose-Einstein-like distortions are to be expected. An assessment of Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds, taking into account the latest results from the Planck satellite as well as the contributions from the strong CII and CO lines from star-forming galaxies, demonstrates that a foreground subtraction accurate enough to fully exploit the PIXIE sensitivity will be extremely challenging. Motivated by this fact we also discuss methods to detect spectral distortions not requiring absolute measurements and show that accurate determinations of the frequency spectrum of the CMB dipole amplitude may substantially improve over COBE/FIRAS limits on distortion parameters. Such improvements may be at reach of next generation CMB anisotropy experiments. The estimated amplitude of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) dipole might be detectable by careful analyses of Planck maps at the highest frequencies. Thus Planck might provide interesting constraints on the CIB intensity, currently known with a simeq 30% uncertainty.

Abstract

arXiv:1501.02170v2.-- et al., We discuss the potential of a next generation space-borne CMB experiment for studies of extragalactic sources with reference to COrE+, a project submitted to ESA in response to the call for a Medium-size mission (M4). We consider three possible options for the telescope size: 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m (although the last option is probably impractical, given the M4 boundary conditions). The proposed instrument will be far more sensitive than Planck and will have a diffraction-limited angular resolution. These properties imply that even the 1 m telescope option will perform substantially better than Planck for studies of extragalactic sources. The source detection limits as a function of frequency have been estimated by means of realistic simulations taking into account all the relevant foregrounds. Predictions for the various classes of extragalactic sources are based on up-to-date models. The most significant improvements over Planck results are presented for each option. COrE+ will provide much larger samples of truly local star-forming galaxies (by about a factor of 8 for the 1 m telescope, of 17 for 1.5 m, of 30 for 2 m), making possible analyses of the properties of galaxies (luminosity functions, dust mass functions, star formation rate functions, dust temperature distributions, etc.) across the Hubble sequence. Even more interestingly, COrE+ will detect, at |b| > 30°, thousands of strongly gravitationally lensed galaxies (about 2,000, 6,000 and 13,000 for the 1 m, 1.5 m and 2 m options, respectively). Such large samples are of extraordinary astrophysical and cosmological value in many fields. Moreover, COrE+ high frequency maps will be optimally suited to pick up proto-clusters of dusty galaxies, i.e. to investigate the evolution of large scale structure at larger redshifts than can be reached by other means. Thanks to its high sensitivity COrE+ will also yield a spectacular advance in the blind detection of extragalactic sources in polarization: we expect that it will detect up to a factor of 40 (1 m option) or of 160 (1.5 m option) more radio sources than can be detected by Planck and, for the first time, from several tens (1 m option) to a few hundreds (1.5 m option) of star forming galaxies. This will open a new window for studies of the global properties of magnetic fields in star forming galaxies and of their relationships with star formation rates., Work supported in part by ASI/INAF agreement n. 2014-024-R.0. Abstract

The European Space Agency’s Planck satellite, dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched 14 May 2009 and has been scanning the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously since 12 August 2009. In March 2013, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the initial cosmology products based on the first 15.5 months of Planck data, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the mission and its performance, the processing, analysis, and characteristics of the data, the scientific results, and the science data products and papers in the release. The science products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and diffuse extragalactic foregrounds, a catalogue of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources, and a list of sources detected through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data and a lensing likelihood are described. Scientific results include robust support for the standard six-parameter ΛCDM model of cosmology and improved measurements of its parameters, including a highly significant deviation from scale invariance of the primordial power spectrum. The Planck values for these parameters and others derived from them are significantly different from those previously determined. Several large-scale anomalies in the temperature distribution of the CMB, first detected by WMAP, are confirmed with higher confidence. Planck sets new limits on the number and mass of neutrinos, and has measured gravitational lensing of CMB anisotropies at greater than 25σ. Planck finds no evidence for non-Gaussianity in the CMB. Planck’s results agree well with results from the measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations. Planck finds a lower Hubble constant than found in some more local measures. Some tension is also present between the amplitude of matter fluctuations (σ8) derived from CMB data and that derived from Sunyaev-Zeldovich data. The Planck and WMAP power spectra are offset from each other by an average level of about 2% around the first acoustic peak. Abstract

[Abridged] We present a comprehensive investigation of the cosmological evolution of the luminosity function (LF) of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the infrared (IR). Based on the observed dichotomy in the ages of stellar populations of early-type galaxies on one side and late-type galaxies on the other, the model interprets the epoch-dependent LFs at z \geq 1.5 using a physical model for the evolution of proto-spheroidal galaxies and of the associated AGNs, while IR galaxies at z, 48 pages, 18 figures, Accepted by Astrophysical Journal. Abstract

We have developed an approximate technique, based on the principles of multi-mode Gaussian optics, for studying the behaviour of shaped off-axis mirrors. We describe a mirror as an inclined phase-transforming plane, where the phase transformation across the plane is determined by the depth of the mirror as a function of position. The scattering matrix is calculated in the usual way by evaluating the overlap integrals over some surface for which the amplitudes and phases of the incoming and outgoing fields are known; because, however, the modes are not orthogonal over the surface of interest, a system of linear equations has to be solved. We demonstrate the “thin-mirror” technique by studying the behaviour of paraboloidal and ellipsoidal mirros, and we show how the performance of measured and approximate surfaces can be assessed.

Abstract

J. Delabrouille et al., We present the Planck Sky Model (PSM), a parametric model for generating all-sky, few arcminute resolution maps of sky emission at submillimetre to centimetre wavelengths, in both intensity and polarisation. Several options are implemented to model the cosmic microwave background, Galactic diffuse emission (synchrotron, free-free, thermal and spinning dust, CO lines), Galactic H ii regions, extragalactic radio sources, dusty galaxies, and thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich signals from clusters of galaxies. Each component is simulated by means of educated interpolations/extrapolations of data sets available at the time of the launch of the Planck mission, complemented by state-of-the-art models of the emission. Distinctive features of the simulations are spatially varying spectral properties of synchrotron and dust; different spectral parameters for each point source; modelling of the clustering properties of extragalactic sources and of the power spectrum of fluctuations in the cosmic infrared background. The PSM enables the production of random realisations of the sky emission, constrained to match observational data within their uncertainties. It is implemented in a software package that is regularly updated with incoming information from observations. The model is expected to serve as a useful tool for optimising planned microwave and sub-millimetre surveys and testing data processing and analysis pipelines. It is, in particular, used to develop and validate data analysis pipelines within the Planck collaboration. Abstract

M. Negrello et al., The Planck Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC) has offered the first opportunity to accurately determine the luminosity function of dusty galaxies in the very local Universe (i.e. distances ≲ 100 Mpc), at several (sub-)millimetre wavelengths, using blindly selected samples of low-redshift sources, unaffected by cosmological evolution. This project, however, requires careful consideration of a variety of issues including the choice of the appropriate flux density measurement, the separation of dusty galaxies from radio sources and from Galactic sources, the correction for the CO emission, the effect of density inhomogeneities and more. We present estimates of the local luminosity functions at 857 GHz (350 μm), 545 GHz (550 μm) and 353 GHz (850 μm) extending across the characteristic luminosityL, and a preliminary estimate over a limited luminosity range at 217 GHz (1382 μm). At 850 μm and for luminosities L ≲ L* our results agree with previous estimates, derived from the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) Local Universe Galaxy Survey, but are higher than the latter at L ≲ L*. We also find good agreement with estimates at 350 and 500 μm based on preliminary Herschel survey data. © 2012 The Authors. 11. Dioestrous ovariectomy: a model to study the role of progesterone in the onset of canine pseudopregnancy

Abstract

It has been suggested that overt pseudopregnancy in bitches is caused by an increase in the concentration of serum prolactin as a result of an abrupt decrease in progesterone concentration in the late luteal phase. This hypothesis was tested by using ovariectomy at dioestrus as an experimental model. A total of 18 intact cross- and purebred bitches were used. Eleven animals were ovariectomized (day 0) between day 25 and day 40 of the oestrous cycle, and seven intact bitches were used as controls. Blood samples for determination of prolactin and progesterone concentrations were collected on days -1, 1, 2, 3 and 7 in the ovariectomized group, and on day 1 and day 7 in the control group. On day 7, the presence or absence of overt pseudopregnancy was recorded. The four ovariectomized bitches with a history of pseudopregnancy showed signs of overt pseudopregnancy (P0.01). On day 7, progesterone concentrations were significantly higher in the control than in the ovariectomized bitches (P0.01). The expected decrease in serum progesterone concentration after ovariectomy was similar in pseudopregnant bitches and non-pseudopregnant bitches. However, in pseudopregnant bitches, but not in non-pseudopregnant bitches, there was a marked increase (expressed as percentage change) in the concentration of prolactin between day -1 and day 7 (P0.01). It was concluded that the abrupt decrease in progesterone concentrations does not lead systematically to pseudopregnancy. Only in bitches predisposed to pseudopregnancy would an abrupt decrease in progesterone concentrations induce a substantial increase in prolactin concentrations, which in turn would trigger the typical signs of pseudopregnancy.

Context. About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. Aims. The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. Methods. Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. Results. For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. The Planck satellite mission has provided the first SZ detection of the hot and diffuse intercluster gas.

Abstract

We describe the processing of the 336 billion raw data samples from the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) which we performed to produce six temperature maps from the first 295 days of Planck-HFI survey data. These maps provide an accurate rendition of the sky emission at 100, 143, 217, 353, 545 and 857GHz with an angular resolution ranging from 9.9 to 4.4'. The white noise level is around 1.5 mu K degree or less in the 3 main CMB channels (100-217 GHz). The photometric accuracy is better than 2% at frequencies between 100 and 353 GHz and around 7% at the two highest frequencies. The maps created by the HFI Data Processing Centre reach our goals in terms of sensitivity, resolution, and photometric accuracy. They are already sufficiently accurate and well-characterised to allow scientific analyses which are presented in an accompanying series of early papers. At this stage, HFI data appears to be of high quality and we expect that with further refinements of the data processing we should be able to achieve, or exceed, the science goals of the Planck project.

Abstract

[Context]: About half of the baryons of the Universe are expected to be in the form of filaments of hot and low-density intergalactic medium. Most of these baryons remain undetected even by the most advanced X-ray observatories, which are limited in sensitivity to the diffuse low-density medium. [Aims]: The Planck satellite has provided hundreds of detections of the hot gas in clusters of galaxies via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect and is an ideal instrument for studying extended low-density media through the tSZ effect. In this paper we use the Planck data to search for signatures of a fraction of these missing baryons between pairs of galaxy clusters. [Methods]: Cluster pairs are good candidates for searching for the hotter and denser phase of the intergalactic medium (which is more easily observed through the SZ effect). Using an X-ray catalogue of clusters and the Planck data, we selected physical pairs of clusters as candidates. Using the Planck data, we constructed a local map of the tSZ effect centred on each pair of galaxy clusters. ROSAT data were used to construct X-ray maps of these pairs. After modelling and subtracting the tSZ effect and X-ray emission for each cluster in the pair, we studied the residuals on both the SZ and X-ray maps. [Results]: For the merging cluster pair A399-A401 we observe a significant tSZ effect signal in the intercluster region beyond the virial radii of the clusters. A joint X-ray SZ analysis allows us to constrain the temperature and density of this intercluster medium. We obtain a temperature of kT = 7.1 ± 0.9 keV (consistent with previous estimates) and a baryon density of (3.7 ± 0.2) × 10-4 cm -3. Conclusions. Abstract

The survey of galaxy clusters performed by Planck through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect has already discovered many interesting objects, thanks to its full sky coverage. One of the SZ candidates detected inthe early months of the mission near to the signal-to-noise threshold, PLCKG214.6+37.0, was later revealed by XMM-Newton to be a triple system of galaxy clusters. We present the results from a deep XMM-Newton re-observation of PLCKG214.6+37.0, part of a multi-wavelength programme to investigate Planck discovered superclusters. The characterisation of the physical properties of the three components has allowed us to build a template model to extract the total SZ signal of this system with Planck data. We have partly reconciled the discrepancy between the expected SZ signal derived from X-rays and the observed one, which are now consistent within 1.2σ. We measured the redshift of the three components with the iron lines in the X-ray spectrum, and confirm that the three clumps are likely part of the same supercluster structure. 17. COVID-19: The impact of social distancing policies, cross-country analysis.

Abstract

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic a large number of countries introduced a range of non-pharmaceutical interventions. Whereas the policies are similar across countries, country characteristics vary substantially. We examine the effectiveness of such policies using a cross-country variation in socio-economic, environmental and geographic, and health system dimensions. The effectiveness of policies that prescribe closures of schools and workplaces is declining with population density, country surface area, employment rate and proportion of elderly in the population; and increasing with GDP per capita and health expenditure. Cross-country human mobility data reinforce some of these results. We argue that the findings can be explained by behavioural response to risk perceptions and resource constraints. Voluntary practice of social distancing might be less prevalent in communities with lower perceived risk, associated with better access to health care and smaller proportion of elderly population. Higher population density, larger geographical area, and higher employment rate may require more resources to ensure compliance with lockdown policies., (© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.)

18. Shortening of interestrous intervals with cabergoline in bitches: a clinical trial.

Abstract

Two consecutive interestrous intervals (n=46) were recorded in 23 bitches of different breeds. At varying times after day 100 from the onset of the second proestrus, cabergoline (5 microg/kg per os q 24 hours) was administered from early (n=11), mid- (n=10), and late (n=2) anestrus until 2 days after the beginning of the following proestrus. Interestrous intervals (IEI) were significantly shorter in the cabergoline-treated time periods when compared to the nontreated IEI (184+/-4.5 days versus 239+/-4.5 days; P<0.01). The mean number of days of cabergoline treatment until the onset of proestrus was 21.4+/-2.9 (least square means and standard error of the mean [LSM+/-SEM]). Mean cabergoline treatment durations beginning in early, mid-, and late anestrus were 27.4+/-3.7, 17.6+/-3.8, and 5+/-3 days (LSM+/-SEM), respectively. A significant correlation was found between the stage of anestrus in which the treatments began and the duration of the treatments required to induce estrus (0.51, P=0.01).

Abstract

To compare the efficacy and safety of two protocols using a combination of aglepristone and cloprostenol for the treatment of open cervix pyometra in the bitch and to describe the progesterone (P4) serum profiles before and during treatments, 15 bitches were randomly allocated into two treatment groups: I (n = 8): aglepristone was administered at 10mg/kg, s.c., on Days 1, 3, 8, and 15 (if not cured), combined with cloprostenol at the dose of 1 microg/kg, s.c., on Days 3 and 8, and II (n = 7): received the same treatment with aglepristone as Treatment I but cloprostenol on Days 3, 5, 8 10, 12, and 15 (if not cured). Before the beginning of the treatments and then on Days 8, 15, and 29 all bitches were evaluated for clinical signs, side effects, hemogram, serum P4 concentrations, and uterus diameters. Bitches in both treatment groups, with (n = 6) or without (n = 9; > or =1.2 ng/ml) initial basal P4 serum concentrations, achieved treatment success without side effects and no significant differences, either on Day 15 (6/8 for Treatment I and 4/7 for Treatment II) or on Day 29 (2/8 for Treatment I and 3/7 for Treatment II). In both treatments groups, clinical signs, blood parameters, and uterine diameters improved to normal values throughout the experiments. A significant interaction between day and treatment was found for percentage change in P4 when all bitches were considered together. Redevelopment of pyometra in the next estrous cycle occurred in 20% of the bitches. One nonrecurrent bitch was mated and whelped a normal litter. It is concluded that these two combined protocols proved to be efficient and safe in reversing clinical signs of open cervix pyometra independently of initial P4 concentrations and that the number of cloprostenol administrations seemed to have an effect on P4 serum changes throughout treatments.

Abstract

Cabergoline or bromocriptine were administered orally to 60 bitches at doses of 5 microg/kg and 15 microg/kg daily, respectively, for two to 45 days for the treatment of pseudopregnancy or for oestrus induction. Seven of the dogs which received cabergoline for more than 14 days developed coat colour changes from the second week of administration to the next coat shedding. Of these, fawn-coloured bitches developed a yellowish coat colour while Argentine boar hounds became black spotted, mainly on their extremities. In previous untreated oestrous periods, these bitches had shown no coat colour changes. It is concluded that a colour shift in certain haircoats of particular breeds could be mediated through the inhibition of the secretion of melanocyte-stimulating hormone by the administration of the dopaminergic agonist cabergoline for more than two weeks. Transient coat colour changes should be considered a possible side effect when planning long-term treatment with dopaminergic agonists in dogs.

21. Secretory patterns of prolactin in dogs: circannual and ultradian rhythms.

Abstract

The objectives of the present study were to characterize in dogs circannual and ultradian prolactin (PRL) secretory patterns and also to compare gender differences in the ultradian period of study in the Southern hemisphere. Blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals for 2.5 h from seven male and seven female dogs and a single monthly sampling, over a 1-year time span, from six male dogs for the ultradian and circannual studies, respectively. Plasma PRL was measured by a homologous enzyme immunometric assay. The ultradian study evidenced PRL elevations suggesting pulsatile secretion in both genders. Significantly higher mean smoothed baseline (ng / ml [7.02 +/- 1.2 vs 1.23 +/- 1.0, p < 0.01]) and AUC (ng/ml * 2.5 h [25.2 +/- 3.8 vs 4.4 +/- 3.8, p < 0.01]) were found in females when compared with males. In the circannual study, plasma PRL concentrations did not statistically differ among the months of the year. When grouped together the 3 months with a longer daylight had significantly higher PRL concentrations than the 3 months with the shortest (2.31 +/- 0.37 vs 0.96 +/- 0.37, p < 0.01). The correlation between length of daylight and PRL concentrations was 0.24, p < 0.05. It is concluded that PRL does have a circannual rhythmicity and that there are ultradian gender-related differences in the period under study in these groups of dogs. This study also demonstrates plasma PRL elevations suggesting pulsatile secretion in male dogs.

Objective: To determine whether cabergoline would be safe and effective for induction of estrus in dogs with primary or secondary anestrus., Design: Prospective case series., Animals: 6 privately owned otherwise healthy pure-bred dogs with primary or secondary anestrus., Procedure: Dogs were treated with cabergoline (5 microg/kg [2.3 microg/lb], p.o., q 24 h) until 2 days after the onset of proestrus. Follicular development was assessed by means of cytologic examination of vaginal smears; ovulation was assessed by measuring serum progesterone concentration 3 weeks after the onset of estrus. Five bitches were mated during behavioral estrus., Results: All dogs had normal estrus periods, and all 5 dogs that were mated whelped normal litters. Mean duration of cabergoline treatment was 16 days. None of the dogs had any adverse effects associated with cabergoline administration., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Results suggest that administration of cabergoline is safe and effective for treatment for primary and secondary anestrus in dogs.

23. Use of prostaglandins and bromocriptine mesylate for pregnancy termination in bitches.

Abstract

Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of 2 protocols using bromocriptine mesylate and prostaglandins to terminate unwanted pregnancy in bitches., Design: Prospective randomized single-blind controlled study., Animals: 34 crossbred and purebred bitches referred for possible pregnancy termination. Seven additional pregnant bitches were used as controls., Procedure: Pregnancy was assessed by ultrasonographic examination from day 25 after mating in all bitches. Of the 34 bitches, 25 were pregnant and were randomly allocated to a treatment group. Group-1 dogs (n = 12) received a combination of increasing amounts of bromocriptine mesylate (15 to 30 microg/kg [6.8 to 13.6 microg/lb], p.o., q 12 h) and dinoprost tromethamine (0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg [0.045 to 0.09 mg/lb], s.c., q 24 h). Group-2 dogs (n =13) received a combination of increasing amounts of bromocriptine mesylate (the same schedule as group-1 dogs) and cloprostenol sodium (1 microg/kg [0.45 microg/lb], s.c., q 48 h). Both groups were treated until pregnancy termination. Results-Treatment success was 100% in both groups. Days of treatment required for pregnancy termination did not significantly differ between groups (5.0 +/- 0.6 vs 3.7 +/- 0.6 days, group-1 and group-2 dogs, respectively) although adverse effects only developed in group-1 dogs. At the end of the protocols, pseudopregnancy was observed in 3 of 12 and 6 of 13 group-1 and group-2 dogs, respectively. Pregnancy termination was followed by a mucoid sanguineous vulvar discharge for 3 to 10 days., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Results of this study indicate that protocols that combine the use of bromocriptine mesylate and prostaglandins for the termination of unwanted pregnancy in bitches are efficient and safe. The use of bromocriptine mesylate and cloprostenol had the best results and could be easily used on an outpatient basis.

Abstract

Serum and seminal biologic substances that are produced either by normal or abnormal tissues of the organism and that can be used to diagnose pathological conditions are usually referred as markers. The aim of this article is to briefly review the most relevant clinical features of the main genital markers in the male dog: alkaline phosphatase (AP), carnitine and canine prostate-specific arginine esterase (CPSE). Carnitine and AP are markers for the presence of epididymal fluid in the ejaculate and their measurement in azoospermic dogs has been used as an indicator of tubular patency of the ductal network. Although AP is not present in high concentrations in the testis, this does not preclude the possibility that testicular cells might secrete some AP. If this were true, AP could also reflect, at least in some degree, germ cell function in this species. Prostate-specific arginine esterase, the major secretory product of the canine prostate, is a known marker of gland secretion in the dog. Tumor markers frequently used in human medicine, such as prostatic acid phosphatase and prostate-specific antigen, are is still controversial in the diagnosis of prostatic carcinoma of the dog. Although further research is necessary to define the exact role of CPSE, it seems to be a promising diagnostic tool in nonneoplasic canine prostatic disorders. Future studies should also address the quantitative relationship among serum and prostatic androgen levels, prostatic androgen-dependent problems and how these are affected by anti-androgen treatment. The aim of this article is to briefly review the most relevant clinical features of three main genital markers of the male dog.

25. Dioestrous ovariectomy: a model to study the role of progesterone in the onset of canine pseudopregnancy.

Abstract

It has been suggested that overt pseudopregnancy in bitches is caused by an increase in the concentration of serum prolactin as a result of an abrupt decrease in progesterone concentration in the late luteal phase. This hypothesis was tested by using ovariectomy at dioestrus as an experimental model. A total of 18 intact cross- and purebred bitches were used. Eleven animals were ovariectomized (day 0) between day 25 and day 40 of the oestrous cycle, and seven intact bitches were used as controls. Blood samples for determination of prolactin and progesterone concentrations were collected on days -1, 1, 2, 3 and 7 in the ovariectomized group, and on day 1 and day 7 in the control group. On day 7, the presence or absence of overt pseudopregnancy was recorded. The four ovariectomized bitches with a history of pseudopregnancy showed signs of overt pseudopregnancy (P < 0.01). On day 7, progesterone concentrations were significantly higher in the control than in the ovariectomized bitches (P < 0.01). The expected decrease in serum progesterone concentration after ovariectomy was similar in pseudopregnant bitches and non-pseudopregnant bitches. However, in pseudopregnant bitches, but not in non-pseudopregnant bitches, there was a marked increase (expressed as percentage change) in the concentration of prolactin between day -1 and day 7 (P < 0.01). It was concluded that the abrupt decrease in progesterone concentrations does not lead systematically to pseudopregnancy. Only in bitches predisposed to pseudopregnancy would an abrupt decrease in progesterone concentrations induce a substantial increase in prolactin concentrations, which in turn would trigger the typical signs of pseudopregnancy.
