This paper presents the synthesis and characterization of graphene–polymer composites, focusing on their mechanical and antibacterial properties. Graphene flakes were obtained via an electrochemical method and integrated into polyamide 6 (PA6) matrices using melt intercalation. Various characterization techniques confirmed the quality of the graphene flakes, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) imaging. Mechanical tests showed an increase in the elastic modulus with graphene incorporation, while the impact strength decreased. The SEM analysis highlighted the dispersion of the graphene flakes within the composites and their impact on fracture behavior. Antimicrobial tests demonstrated significant antibacterial properties of the composites, attributed to both oxidative stress and mechanical damage induced by the graphene flakes. Growing demand for electric energy in newly developed electronic systems causes increasing interest in research on piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs). Design and fabrication of such devices is challenging, considering cost of materials used in their construction. This is the main reason why intensive research has begun on 0‐3 composites with piezoelectric properties. One of the most promising constituent materials for composites fabrication are polymers, due to their low cost and easy processing. Herein, we present fabricated wearable PENG with good impact and vibration energy conversion properties. Correlation between matrix stiffness and piezoelectric properties of 0‐3 type composite is proposed. It was found that composite with 10 wt.% of BiFeO3 particles exhibits power output density for vibrations, finger tapping, and air stream pressure P = 11.12 nW cm−3, P = 4.83 μW cm−3, and P = 769.2 μW cm−3, respectively. Decrease in stiffness of epoxy matrix results at least in two‐times lower power output density for this same PENG. The obtained results demonstrate that the fabricated BFO/epoxy composites show the wide applicability and potential to be integrated with other functional devices, for example, as a part of wearable devices in smart shoes. This work presents state of the art rare-earth activated SnO2 nanocrystals - based transparent glass-ceramics. With combined enhancements in both photorefractivity and rare-earth photoluminescence, the glass-ceramic has unique benefits as a lasing material. It exhibits high photorefractivity with UV induced refractive index modifications in the order of 10-3. Exploiting its high photorefractivity, optical gratings are fabricated on the glass-ceramic under an energy-efficient direct UV writing process. Furthermore, SnO2 semiconductor nanocrystals are also employed as efficient rare-earth sensitizers enhancing drastically the rare-earth photoluminescence.

Nanocrystalline La0.9A0.1Mn0.9Cr0.1O3 (A: Li, K, Na) powders have been synthesized by combustion method. The powders were used to prepare ceramics by high-pressure low-temperature sintering technique. For all samples the structure, elemental composition and morphology were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Magnetic properties were studied using magnetometry methods and the valency changes of the cations after alkali ions doping were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The influence of the sintering pressure on the structural and magnetic properties of the manganites doped with different alkali ions and chromium was also investigated. Magnetization properties were studied as a function of sintering pressure and type of the dopant. Chemical doping with alkali ions as well as external pressure significantly changed the magnetic properties of the compounds. It was found that the magnetic properties of the manganites could be predictably modified through the use of a suitable dopant element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The gadolinium, gallium, aluminum garnet doped with cerium and co-doped with dysprosium ions were prepared using sol gel method. The SEM images show that after synthesis, the grains are below 100 nm. The powders were ultrasonically mixed with graphene nanoflakes and ceramics were prepared using the high pressure low temperature sintering technique. A series of the ceramics was prepared using different graphene content. The structure of the samples was examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman techniques. The spectroscopic properties were checked using conventional and persistent luminescence spectra measurements. The thermoluminescence glow curves and fading time of persistent luminescence measurements were performed to check how the graphene presence affects the electron traps number and depth. It was found that the addition of graphene improved the thermal conductivity of co-doped samples. This resulted in faster release of deeper traps and an increase in fading of persistent luminescence. The possibility of releasing energy from deep traps without additional stimulation may allow the use in different applications, the matrices and luminescent ions, which so far did not show persistent luminescence at room temperature. The aim of this work was to check the influence of Tb3+ ion concentration and synthesis method on the persistent luminescence properties. A series of Gd3−xTbxGa3Al2O12 nanopowders were obtained by using two different synthesis methods. The crystal structure refinement was performed to check the impact of the preparation method and doping level on the crystallization process. This revealed the influence of doping level on conventional and persistent luminescence color, intensity and decay time. It was demonstrated that it is possible to tune the persistent luminescence color by changing the Tb3+ doping level. The spectroscopic measurements show that persistent luminescence appears only under UV excitation, suggesting that the 5d levels of Tb3+ play an active role in this process. Thermoluminescence measurements indicate that the depth and number of electron traps in the samples are associated with the synthesis method and dopant concentration. Based on the results, the possible mechanism of energy transfer between the traps and luminescence centers is proposed and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the work was to check how the introduction of alkali and cobalt ions into a manganese structure can affect the structural disorder and, in consequence, lead to the changes (improvements) of magnetic properties. The high-pressure sintering technique was applied to check if the external factor can modify the magnetization of manganites. Nanocrystalline La0.9A0.1Mn0.9Co0.1O3 (where A is Li, K, Na) powders were synthesized by the combustion technique. The respective powders were used for nanoceramics preparation by the high-pressure sintering technique. The structure and morphology of the compounds were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Magnetization studies for all compounds were performed in order to check the changes induced by either codoping or the sintering pressure. It was found that the type of the dopant ion and sintering pressure produced significant changes to the magnetic properties of the studied compounds. Alkali ions lead to the stabilization of Co ions in the +2 oxidation state and the formation of positive exchange interactions Mn3+–Mn4+ and Co2+–Mn4+ and the subsequent increase in remanent magnetization. High sintering pressure leads to a decrease in grain size and reduction of long-range ferromagnetic order and lower magnetization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the synthesis, crystal structures, Raman, infrared, electron absorption and emission spectra of two novel luminescent MOFs, [(CH3)2NH2][Dy(HCOO)4] and [N2H5][Dy(HCOO)4]. These data show that [(CH3)2NH2][Dy(HCOO)4] and [N2H5][Dy(HCOO)4] crystallize in polar space groups of Pna21 and Pca21 symmetry, respectively. The polar properties of [N2H5][Dy(HCOO)4] come from the arrangement of template cations that possess an internal dipole moment as well as from the symmetry of the framework. In [(CH3)2NH2][Dy(HCOO)4], the Dy(iii)–formate framework is centrosymmetric and the polar properties of this compound arise from the arrangement of the DMA+ cations. Vibrational studies reveal that the position of the ν(NN) band, which is very sensitive to coordination changes, is characteristic for hydrazine molecules forming onium ions. Optical studies show that both compounds exhibit emission of Dy(iii) ions, in spite of full concentration of dysprosium ions in the studied compounds. Our data also show that radiative decay times, 57 μs for [(CH3)2NH2][Dy(HCOO)4] and 96 μs for [N2H5][Dy(HCOO)4], are very long compared to lifetimes observed in inorganic compounds. We have also preformed Judd–Ofelt analysis of the optical absorption spectrum of the hydrazinium analogue that provides information on various optical parameters such as electric-dipole oscillator strengths, Judd–Ofelt parameters Ωλ, branching ratios and spontaneous emission probabilities.
