Abstract

The construction industry makes a significant contribution to global CO2 emissions. Material extraction, processing, and demolition account for most of its environmental impact. As a response, there is an increasing interest in developing and implementing innovative biomaterials that support a circular economy, such as mycelium-based composites. The mycelium is the network of hyphae of fungi. Mycelium-based composites are renewable and biodegradable biomaterials obtained by ceasing mycelial growth on organic substrates, including agricultural waste. Cultivating mycelium-based composites within molds, however, is often wasteful, especially if molds are not reusable or recyclable. Shaping mycelium-based composites using 3D printing can minimize mold waste while allowing intricate forms to be fabricated. In this research, we explore the use of waste cardboard as a substrate for cultivating mycelium-based composites and the development of extrudable mixtures and workflows for 3D-printing mycelium-based components. In this paper, existing research on the use of mycelium-based material in recent 3D printing efforts was reviewed. This review is followed by the MycoPrint experiments that we conducted, and we focus on the main challenges that we faced (i.e., contamination) and the ways in which we addressed them. The results of this research demonstrate the feasibility of using waste cardboard as a substrate for cultivating mycelia and the potential for developing extrudable mixtures and workflows for 3D-printing mycelium-based components. Abstract

Shape-changing materials have become increasingly popular among architects in designing responsive systems. One of the greatest challenges of designing with these materials is their dynamic nature, which requires architects to design with the fourth dimension, time. This article presents a study that formalizes the shape-changing behavior of three-dimensional printed wood-based composite materials and the rules that serve to compute their shape-change in response to variations in relative humidity. In this research, we first developed custom three-dimensional printing protocols and analyzed the effects of three-dimensional printing parameters on shape-change. We thereafter three-dimensional printed kirigami geometries to amplify hygroscopic material transformation of wood-based composites.

Abstract

Tasarım sürecinin erken dönemlerinde eskiz yapımının önemini ortaya koymak için, çeşitli bilim adamları tarafından çok sayıda çalışma yürütülmüştür. Ancak, tasarım çalışmalarında, eskiz, genellikle çizimle ilişkilendirilmekte ve eskiz yapımının bilişsel yönlerine ilişkin araştırmalar, tasarımın erken dönemlerinde, maket ve bilgisayar modeli kullanılarak yapılan üç-boyutlu eskizleri kapsamamaktadır. Bu araştırmanın amacı, maket ve model yapımını, bir eskiz yapma yöntemi olarak, tasarım sürecinde ve bilişsel tasarımda etkili kılan yönlerini ortaya koymaktır. Eskiz yapımının muğlak ve belirsiz olma durumunun tasarım sürecinin erken dönemlerindeki önemini vurgulayan eskiz üzerine yapılmış temel araştırmalardan yola çıkarak, bu tez, maket ve modelin de muğlak tasarım araçları arasında sayılıp sayılamayacağına bakmaktadır. Bu sorgulama süreci, mimarlık bölümü yüksek lisans öğrencisi olan üç öğrenciyle yapılmış protokol analizlerinden çıkan ampirik bulgularla desteklenmektedir. Considerable research has been done by various scholars to assess the significance of sketching in the early stages of the design process. However, sketching in design studies usually corresponds to drawing and the extensive research on the cognitive aspects of sketching does not always include three-dimensional sketching through physical and digital models produced in the early phases of design process. The aim of the presented research is to identify some characteristics of model-making that make it effective in the design process and design cognition as a form of sketching. Departing from key research on sketching which articulates its uncertain nature as a positive drive in early design phases, this thesis looks at whether physical and digital models can also be counted among ambiguous design tools. The inquiry is supported by empirical data from the protocol studies realized with three graduate students of architecture. 124

Abstract

Shape computation in design is never purely limited to visual aspects and ideally includes material aspects as well. The physicality of designing introduces a wide range of variables for designers to tackle within the design process. We present a simple design exercise realised in four stages where we physically manipulate perforated cardboard sheets as a case to make material variables explicit in the computation. The emphasis is on representing sensory aspects rather than easily quantifiable properties more suitable for simulations. Our explorations demonstrate the use of visual rules to represent actions, variables and form as well as how to control the variables to create new results, both desired and surprising, in materially informed ways.
