4. Dietary Taurine Improves The Growth Performance, Health Status and Liver Histopathology of Meagre (Argyrosomus Regius) Fed A Reduced Fish Meal Diet.

Abstract

Research has focused on alternative plant materials or additives that can be used instead of fish meal due to limited stocks and increased feed prices, although it is important for carnivorous fish species. Taurine is a functional amino acid supplemented to low fish meal diets to improve the growth performance of fish. In this study, eight experimental diets with 0%, 0.5%, 1% and 2% ratios of taurine supplemented (T0, T0.5, T1 and T2) high (HFM) and low fish meal (LFM) diets were prepared (defined as HFMT0, HFMT0.5, HFMT1, HFMT2, LFMT0, LFMT0.5, LFMT1 and LFMT2). The experiment was carried out in twenty-four 400 L rectangular fiberglass tanks conducted in a marine water system, and fish (initial mean weight of 23.5 g) were stocked in each tank. The nutrition trial was carried out for 90 days with three replicates. Meagre fed with the HFMT1 diet had a higher final mean weight (FMW) and specific growth rate (SGR) than fish fed with HFMT0 and all LFM diets. Including taurine in all LFM diets also enhanced growth performance. The FMW and SGR of fish fed the LFMT0.5 diet were similar when compared to HFMT0 (P>0.05) and increased compared to that of other LFM diets with taurine (P<0.05). Meagre fed the LFM0.5 diet had a lower feed conversion rate (FCR) than those provided for all HFM diets, although there was no significant difference between treatments. Dietary taurine has decreased the hepatosomatic index (HSI), viscerosomatic index (VSI) and total ammonia-nitrogen excretion (TAN), irrespective of taurine and fish meal levels. Including dietary taurine at both fish meal levels enhances the number of red blood cells (RBC) and whole-body amino acids of meagre. The most remarkable conclusion of this study is the inclusion of taurine in low fish meal diets improved growth performance and profitability in meagre, and the level of 0.5% has been recommended. Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional and sensory qualities of muffins containing fresh Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) or Spirulina powder (dried Spirulina). Materials and Methods: Spirulina forms of fresh or dried was added to muffins at 3 different levels (4‰, 6‰ and 8‰). Spirulina-free muffins was prepared as a control group. Groups were evaluated by sensory analysis in terms of appearance, texture, taste, odor, color and general acceptability. Protein and phycoyanin analyzes wereperformed in muffins.Results and Conclusion: In groups containing 6‰ and 8‰ fresh Spirulina were found to contain higher phycocyanin than the all groups containing dried Spirulina (p>0,05). Abstract

Lipids and their constituent fatty acids play essential and dynamic roles in the maintenance of optimum growth, feed efficiency and health of fish species. Lipids are primarily included in formulated diets to maximize their protein sparing effects. However, increasing the concentration of dietary fatty acids (EPA and DHA) in the fish diet can negatively affect fish immune response. In this study, some immune parameters were evaluated in European Sea Bass, Dicentrarchus labrax fed by a diet (50% crude protein) supplemented with fish oil at levels of 13–22%. In a 50-day feeding trial, 12 plastic tanks (80-L) were stocked with 18 fish per tank (~8g). The results showed that lysozyme and myeloperoxidase significantly decreased in fish fed diets with 16-22% fish oil inclusion. In conclusion, high–fat diets negatively affected some immune parameters of Sea Bass. Further studies are encouraged on the effect of dietary levels of fish oil on disease resistance.

Abstract

An experiment was designed to determine the optimum dietary protein level of a freshwater ornamental fish, Blue streak hap (Labidochromis caeruleus). Four isocaloric fish meal based diets ranging from 30% to 45% in protein were fed to triplicate groups of Blue streak hap for 8 weeks. Fish (initial weight, 0.85 g) were reared in twelve 50 L aquarium with biological filter and controlled temperature (27.5°C), in stocking density of ten fish/aquarium. Results showed that dietary protein level significantly influenced final weight, weight gain and specific growth rate of fish. Maximum growth of fish was observed in the 40% protein diet, although this was not significantly different from the 35% and 45% protein diets (P>0.05). Abstract

In a 12-week feeding trial, the effect of 2 algae meals (Ulva rigida or Cystoseira barbata) on feed intake, growth, and nutrient utilization of juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was investigated. This was the first attempt to utilize Cystoseira barbata as a feed supplement for Nile tilapia. The fish were fed to apparent satiation with formulated diets supplemented with various levels of Ulva meal (5%, 10%, or 15%) or Cystoseira meal (5%, 10%, or 15%). A diet without algae meal served as a control diet. The highest values for weight gain were for fish fed the 5% Cystoseira diet, control diet, and 5% Ulva diet (156%, 151%, and 150%, respectively), but the values were not significantly different (P > 0.05) compared to other treatments, except for the fish fed on the 15% Ulva diet (P < 0.05), which exhibited the lowest weight gain. Fish fed the diet containing 15% Ulva meal showed the poorest feed conversion ratio (FCR). Protein and energy utilization tended to decrease in the groups fed the algae meals at the highest supplementation level of 15%. Carcass lipid levels decreased with increasing levels of Ulva meal, while an increase in carcass lipid level with increasing levels of Cystoseira meal was observed (P < 0.05). Abstract

Bu tezde, ham ve otoklavlanmış Ulva rigida (Agard, 1822) ile Spirulina platensis unlarının yavru gökkuşağı alabalığının (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792) yemlerinde kullanımının büyüme performansı, besin kullanımı, vücut kompozisyonu ve yağ asidi profili üzerine olan etkileri araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla, eş zamanlı olarak yürütülen iki ayrı besleme denemesi yapılmıştır. Üç paralelli olarak yürütülen denemelerde, 150 lt lik her bir tanka ortalama ağırlıkları 7,90±0,01 gr olan 20 adet yavru gökkuşağı alabalığı konmuş ve 12 hafta boyunca günde üç kez doyuncaya kadar %45 protein ve %14 yağ içeriğine sahip yemlerle beslenmişlerdir.Besleme denemesi I'de, alg içermeyen bir kontrol yemi (K) ve çeşitli seviyelerde ham Ulva unu (%5= HU5; %10= HU10) ve otoklavlanmış Ulva unu (%5=OU5; %10=OU10) içeren 4 deneme yemi formüle edilmiştir. HU10 grubunun spesifik büyüme oranı ve son vücut ağırlığı OU10 grubundan önemli derece daha yüksek bulunmuştur (p0,05). OU10 grubunda hepatosomatik indeks değerleri diğer gruplardan daha düşüktür (p0,05), OU%5 grubunda karkas proteini değerleri, diğer gruplara göre önemli derecede düşük bulunmuştur (p0,05). Balıkların kuru madde ve kül içeriği, deneme grupları arasında benzer bulunmuştur. Net protein sindirilebilirlik kat sayısı Spirulina ile beslenen grupta kontrol yemine göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur. The present thesis was performed to determine the effects of the use of raw and autoclaved Ulva rigida and Spirulina platensis meals on the growth performance, nutrient utilization, whole-body composition and fatty acid profile of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792). Two different fish feding trials were carried out in this thesis as simultaneous. The trout (initial weight ~ 7.9 g) were were stocked into each fiberglass tank (150 l) 20 fish in triplicate and fed close to apparent satiation by hand three daily during 12 weeks. All the treatment diets contained 45% protein and 14%lipid.In the feeding trial I, an algae-free control diet (C) and 4 experimental diets, including varying levels of raw Ulva meal (5%=U5; 10%=U10) and autoclaved Ulva meal (5%=AU5; 10%=AU10) were formulated. Specific Growth Rate and final weight of U10 group were significantly higher than those of AU10 group (p0,05). Hepato somatic index of U10 group was lower than the other treatments. Viscera somatic index of autoclaved Ulva groups were higher than the control and raw Ulva groups. No significant differences in carcass moisture, lipid and ash were observed. Among the carcass protein in AU5 decreased significantly than the other groups (p 0,05), except hepato somatic index (HSI). Dry matter and ash of the fish were similar among treatments. The apparent digestibility coefficients of protein were significantly higher in fish fed Spirulina diets relative to those fed the control diet. The results show that dietary Spirulina improves growth, feed utilization and fatty acid composition of rainbow trout.According to both feeding trials results, it was found that dietary level of 10% of autoclaved Ulva and 5 ? 10% of Spirulina positively influenced growth performance, feed conversion ratio and flesh quality of juvenile rainbow trout. 94

Abstract

A 12-week growth trial was conducted to determine the effects of dietary protein on the growth of the yellow tail cichlid, Pseudotropheus acei, and on water quality in closed recirculating systems. Six test diets were formulated to contain protein levels ranging 25-50% by substituting corn oil and a-starch for fishmeal. Diets were assigned to triplicate groups of 10 fish in a completely randomized design. The feed conversion ratios of fish fed the 35% and 50% crude protein diets were significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of fish fed the 30% protein diet. The protein efficiency ratio declined as the dietary protein level increased. Dietary protein levels significantly influenced total ammonia-nitrogen excretion (TAN); fish fed 50% protein excreted higher concentrations of ammonia-nitrogen than fish fed 25-35% dietary protein (p<0.05). Results suggest that inclusion of more than 35% protein in diets containing 10% crude lipid does not benefit juvenile yellow tail growth performance. Further, as TAN excretion and feed costs increased at protein levels beyond 35%, we recommend a diet containing 35% protein and 10% lipid for promoting good growth of juvenile yellow tail cichlids under the conditions used in the present trial.

Abstract

A nutrition trial with meagre, Argyrosomus regius was assessed to determine the effect of dietary replacement of fish oil ( FO) by soybean oil ( SO) on the growth, feed utilization, body composition, fatty acid composition and basic haematological parameters. Six isonitrogenous (47% crude protein) and isoenergetic (gross energy 22 kJ/g) experimental diets were formulated by replacing 0 ( FO), 20 (S20), 40 (S40), 60 (S60), 80 (S80) and 100 (S100) % of the FO with SO. Fish were fed three times daily to near satiation for 14 weeks. The specific growth rate ( SGR) of fish fed S100 diet was significantly lower than the other treatments, except SO80 diet. The fish fed SO100 diet displayed significantly higher feed conversion ratio than that of other diets ( P < 0.05). It was observed that fish fed the SO100 and SO80 diets displayed haemoglobin ( HGB) levels significantly lower ( P < 0.05) than fish fed the SO20 diet. Packed cell volume ( PCV) of fish fed SO20 diet was significantly higher compared to SO100. The white blood cell ( WBC) and red blood cell ( RBC) remained unaffected by dietary treatment. The docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) levels of meagre were significantly reduced by the substituting of dietary SO by FO at the end of the feeding period. The level of linoleic acid (18:2n-6, LA) and linolenic acid (18:3n-3, LNA) significantly raised in fish fed with SO diets ( P < 0.05). The results of this study showed that SO could be replaced FO up to 80% in meagre diet without negative effect on growth performance and basic haematological parameters. Furthermore, the maximum level of FO replacement with SO determined by second order polynomial regression analysis, was 30.1% on the basis of maximum SGR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A feeding trial was performed to determine the effect of a commercial source of Yucca schidigera and Quillaja saponaria extracts (Nutrafito Plus®), in practical diets, on striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus growth, feed utilization, body composition, total ammonia-nitrogen ( TAN) excretion and haematological parameters. Four experimental diets were supplemented with Nutrafito Plus® at 0%, 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.03% (diets: control, N01, N02 and N03 respectively). Three replicate groups of striped catfish, with initial mean weight of 1.78 ± 0.05 g, were fed one of the four diets for 12 weeks. The specific growth rate ( SGR) and final weight of fish fed diet N03 was significantly higher ( P < 0.05) than fish fed the other dietary treatments. The growth performance of fish fed diets N01 and N02 were not significantly different compared to fish fed the control diet. Striped catfish fed diet N03 had improved feed conversion ratio ( FCR), net protein utilization ( NPU) and protein efficiency ratio ( PER) than the control ( P < 0.05). The inclusion of the high dietary level of Yucca schidigera and Quillaja saponaria, diet N03, reduced TAN compared to all groups. Dietary inclusion of Yucca schidigera and Quillaja saponaria at all levels investigated did not affect the whole body proximate composition of the striped catfish ( P > 0.05). The packed cell volume ( PCV) and haemoglobin level in fish fed diet N03 was significantly higher than in the fish fed the control diet. The present study demonstrates that dietary inclusion of Yucca schidigera and Quillaja saponaria induced positive effects on growth performance and haematological parameters and decreased TAN excretion in striped catfish. A feeding trial with striped catfish, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus was performed to determine the effect of Yucca schidigera in practical diet on the growth, feed utilization, body composition, total ammonia-nitrogen ( TAN) excretion and haematological parameters. A diet with fish meal as the main protein source without yucca extract was used as the control diet (Diet 1). Four diets were formulated with 0.075 (Diet 2), 0.1 (Diet 3) and 0.15 (Diet 4)% of yucca extract respectively. Fifteen fish per tank (initial mean weight 1.78 ± 0.05 g) were randomly allocated to 15 fibreglass tanks (80-L) connected to a freshwater closed recirculation system (temperature 29.7 ± 1.0°C). The experimental diets were tested in triplicates for 12 weeks. The specific growth rate of fish fed Diet 4 was significantly higher when compared with fish fed Diet 1. The growth of fish fed diets Diet 2 and Diet 3 were not significantly different compared with fish fed the Diet 1. Striped catfish fed Diet 4 had significantly lower feed conversion ratio compared with fish fed Diet 1 and Diet 2 ( P < 0.05).The incorporation of high level Yucca schidigera extract in the diets reduced TAN compared with Diet 1. Dietary inclusion of Yucca extract levels did not significantly affect the biometric parameters or whole body proximate composition of the striped catfish ( P > 0.05). The PCV (%) in fish significantly increased with high levels of Yucca inclusion (Diet 4) compared with control diet. Fish fed Diet 4 showed significantly higher haemoglobin levels than Diet 1 ( P < 0.05). The results indicate that dietary inclusion of Yucca schidigera extract is promising as a feed additive that could improve growth performance and some haematological parameters and the best Yucca schidigera level was 0.15%. Abstract

As no information is available regarding the efficacy of using rice protein concentrate ( RPC) to replace fishmeal ( FM) in diets for European sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax), a trial was conducted to determine the optimum inclusion for European sea bass juveniles. Diets were formulated to replace 25%, 50% and 75% of fishmeal with RPC. Additional high level inclusion diets (50% and 75%) were supplemented with lysine and methionine to determine if these were limiting factors. Fish (18.0 ± 0.06 g) were fed the experimental diets for 12 weeks. The final mean weight and specific growth rate ( SGR) were significantly higher in fish fed the control diet (diet FM) and low level RPC (diet RPC25) than in fish fed the other diets. The supplementation of the amino acids had a positive effect on growth, elevating the final weight of the high level RPC ( RPC75 + AA) group above that of the non-supplemented group ( RPC75). However, this was still not comparable to fish fed FM and RPC25 diets. No significant differences in body composition were observed. A digestibility study demonstrated an inverse relationship between elevating inclusion levels of RPC and apparent digestibility coefficients ( ADCs) for dry matter and lipid, with significantly lower values than the control being observed with RPC inclusions above 25%. The mesenteric fat index followed this trend. Circulating leucocyte levels, leucocyte ratios and serum lysozyme activity remained unaffected by dietary treatment. However, compared with the control group, fish fed RPC75, RPC50 + AA RPC75 + AA displayed significantly lower haematocrit values. The present study demonstrates that the inclusion of RPC at 140 g kg−1 (effectively replacing 25% of FM content) does not compromise European sea bass growth performance, body quality or basic haematological parameters. It is suggested that future studies including higher levels test the efficacy of additional amino acid supplementation (e.g. tryptophan). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In a 12-week feeding trial, the effect of 2 algae meals (Ulva rigida or Cystoseira barbata) on feed intake, growth, and nutrient utilization of juvenile Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was investigated. This was the first attempt to utilize Cystoseira barbata as a feed supplement for Nile tilapia. The fish were fed to apparent satiation with formulated diets supplemented with various levels of Ulva meal (5%, 10%, or 15%) or Cystoseira meal (5%, 10%, or 15%). A diet without algae meal served as a control diet. The highest values for weight gain were for fish fed the 5% Cystoseira diet, control diet, and 5% Ulva diet (156%, 151%, and 150%, respectively), but the values were not significantly different (P > 0.05) compared to other treatments, except for the fish fed on the 15% Ulva diet (P < 0.05), which exhibited the lowest weight gain. Fish fed the diet containing 15% Ulva meal showed the poorest feed conversion ratio (FCR). Protein and energy utilization tended to decrease in the groups fed the algae meals at the highest supplementation level of 15%. Carcass lipid levels decreased with increasing levels of Ulva meal, while an increase in carcass lipid level with increasing levels of Cystoseira meal was observed (P < 0.05). Abstract

Tezin amacı, müzikal uyarıların Koi balıklarında (Cyprinus carpio) büyüme performansı, yem kullanımı, davranış ve stres üzerine etkilerini araştırmaktır. Çalışma kontrollü koşullarda gerçekleşen iki ayrı denemeden oluşmaktadır. Birinci denemede, alfa, beta, teta ve gama ses dalgaları ile klasik, country, metal, elektro, kentsel gürültü, silk-road, sufi ney, Kuran dinletisi olmak üzere, 12 farklı ses uyarısının balık davranışlarına etkisi incelenmiştir. Farklı davranışlar sergilediği düşünülen kentsel gürültü, silk-road (enstrümental), sufi ney (enstrümental), Kuran dinletisi sesleri, balıkların büyümesi, yemden yararlanma ve stres üzerine etkisini incelemek amacıyla seçilmiştir. Seçilen sesler, ikinci denemede balıklara 90 gün süresince, 08:00 - 08:30, 12:30 - 13:00 ve 17:00 - 17:30 saatleri arasında dinletilmiştir. Tüm çalışmalar 3 tekrarlı olarak yürütülmüştür.İkinci deneme sonunda, Kuran dinletisi, sufi ney, silk-road uyarılarına (67 dB re 1 μPa SPL) maruz kalan deneme grupları, kontrol grubuna (57 dB re 1 μPa SPL) göre daha iyi, yem kullanım ve büyüme performansı sergilemiştir. Kentsel gürültü (67 dB re 1 μPa SPL), balıkların büyümesini ve yem verimliliğini olumsuz etkilemiştir. Farklı müzik uyarılarının hematolojik, immünolojik ve serum biyokimyasal parametrelerde önemli değişimlere neden olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, yoğun kültür balıkçılığı yapılan tesislerde, Kuran dinletisi, sufi ney, silk-road uyarılarının, `büyüme teşvik faktörü` olarak değerlendirilebileceği, balık refahının üzerinde olumlu etkiler gösterebileceği, kentsel gürültünün ise balık refahı, büyüme performansı ve yem kullanımı üzerinde olumsuz etkiler yapabileceği düşünülmektedir. Ayrıca, farklı ses uyarılarının farklı balık türleri ve büyüme dönemlerinde araştırılması ve özellikle balıklarda stresi azaltıcı etkisinin araştırılması önerilebilir. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the effects of musical stimuli on growth performance, feed utilization, behavior and stress in Koi fish (Cyprinus carpio). The study consists of two separate experiments. In the musical stimuli selection experiment (preliminary experiment), alpha, beta, classical theta and gamma sound waves, country, metal, electroplating, urban noise, silk-road, sufi ney, and Quran performance on fish behavior were examined, and silk-road (instrumental), sufi ney (instrumental), Quran performance groups exhibited different behaviours were chosen to evaluate the effect of musical stimuli on growth performance, feed utilization and stress condition of fish. Selected musical stimuli sounds were underwater-transmitted to fishes in the selected experimental groups (secondary experiments) between 08:00-08:30, 12:30-13:00 and 17:00-17:30 hours for a period of 90 days. All experiments were performed in three replicates.End of the trial, the experimental groups exposed to instrumental sufi Ney and Quran performance (67 dB re 1 μPa SPL) showed better growth performance than the control group (57 dB re 1 μPa SPL). Urban noise (67 dB re 1 μPa SPL) adversely affected fish growth and feed efficiency. It has been determined that different musical stimuli cause significant changes in hematologic, immunologic and serum biochemical parameters. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that underwater sound transmisisons of silk-road (instrumental), sufi ney (instrumental), or Quran performance can be accepted as a `growth promoting effect` with improvement of fish welfare in intensive fish culture facilities. Urban noise, however, presented negative effects on fish welfare, growth performance and feed utilization. Further investigations are encouraged to focus on stress-reducing effects of different underwater sound transmissions and their effects on various kinds of fish species of different growth periods. 100
