Abstract

We report on a novel phase-locking technique for fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometers based on discrete single-photon detections, and demonstrate this in a setup. Our interferometer decodes relative-phase-encoded optical pulse pairs for quantum key distribution applications and requires no locking laser in addition to the weak received signal. Our new simple locking scheme is shown to produce an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck dynamic and achieve optimal phase noise for a given count rate. In case of wavelength drifts that arise during the reception of Doppler-shifted satellite signals, the arm-length difference gets continuously readjusted to keep the interferometer phase stable., Comment: 13 pages

Abstract

Abstract Endothelial dysfunction is a key factor promoting atherosclerosis and cardiovascular complications. Hemodialysis patients typically show various cardiovascular complications and impaired retinal venular dilation has been described as a risk factor for mortality. Non-invasive retinal vessel analysis provides insight into the microvasculature and endothelial function. Static retinal vessel analysis determines arteriolar and venular vessel diameters and dynamic retinal vessel analysis measures microvascular function by flicker-light induced stimulation, which results in physiological dilation of retinal vessels. We measured 220 healthy individuals and compared them to our preexisting cohort of hemodialysis patients (275 for static and 214 for dynamic analysis). Regarding static vessel diameters, hemodialysis patients and healthy individuals did not significantly differ between vessel diameters. Dynamic retinal vessel analysis showed attenuated dilation of the arteriole of hemodialysis patients with 1.6% vs 2.3% in healthy individuals (p = 0.009). Case–control matching for age (mean 65.4 years) did not relevantly diminish the difference. Hemodialysis patients also exhibited reduced venular dilation after matching for age (3.2% vs 3.8%, p = 0.019). Hemodialysis patients showed microvascular dysfunction compared to healthy individuals when using dynamic retinal vessel analysis. Further studies should focus on dynamic retinal vessel analysis which can add insights into the microvascular function and risk factors in multimorbid patients.

Abstract

We investigate estimation of fluctuating channels and its effect on security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution. We propose a novel estimation scheme which is based on the clusterization of the estimated transmittance data. We show that uncertainty about whether the transmittance is fixed or not results in a lower key rate. However, if the total number of measurements is large, one can obtain using our method a key rate similar to the non-fluctuating channel even for highly fluctuating channels. We also verify our theoretical assumptions using experimental data from an atmospheric quantum channel. Our method is therefore promising for secure quantum communication over strongly fluctuating turbulent atmospheric channels., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Transmittance fluctuations in turbulent atmospheric channels result in quadrature excess noise which limits applicability of continuous-variable quantum communication. Such fluctuations are commonly caused by beam wandering around the receiving aperture. We study the possibility to stabilize the fluctuations by expanding the beam, and test this channel stabilization in regard of continuous-variable entanglement sharing and quantum key distribution. We perform transmittance measurements of a real free-space atmospheric channel for different beam widths and show that the beam expansion reduces the fluctuations of the channel transmittance by the cost of an increased overall loss. We also theoretically study the possibility to share an entangled state or to establish secure quantum key distribution over the turbulent atmospheric channels with varying beam widths. We show the positive effect of channel stabilization by beam expansion on continuous-variable quantum communication as well as the necessity to optimize the method in order to maximize the secret key rate or the amount of shared entanglement. Being autonomous and not requiring adaptive control of the source and detectors based on characterization of beam wandering, the method of beam expansion can be also combined with other methods aiming at stabilizing the fluctuating free-space atmospheric channels., Comment: \copyright 2018 Optical Society of America. Abstract

Summary: Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is associated with reduced allograft survival, and each additional hour of cold ischemia time increases the risk of graft failure and mortality following renal transplantation. Receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) is a key effector of necroptosis, a regulated form of cell death. Here, we evaluate the first-in-human RIPK3 expression dataset following IRI in kidney transplantation. The primary analysis included 374 baseline biopsy samples obtained from renal allografts 10 minutes after onset of reperfusion. RIPK3 was primarily detected in proximal tubular cells and distal tubular cells, both of which are affected by IRI. Time-to-event analysis revealed that high RIPK3 expression is associated with a significantly higher risk of one-year transplant failure and prognostic for one-year (death-censored) transplant failure independent of donor and recipient associated risk factors in multivariable analyses. The RIPK3 score also correlated with deceased donation, cold ischemia time and the extent of tubular injury.

Abstract

Although somatic mutations in Histone 3.3 (H3.3) are well-studied drivers of oncogenesis, the role of germline mutations remains unreported. We analyze 46 patients bearing de novo germline mutations in histone 3 family 3A (H3F3A) or H3F3B with progressive neurologic dysfunction and congenital anomalies without malignancies. Molecular modeling of all 37 variants demonstrated clear disruptions in interactions with DNA, other histones, and histone chaperone proteins. Patient histone posttranslational modifications (PTMs) analysis revealed notably aberrant local PTM patterns distinct from the somatic lysine mutations that cause global PTM dysregulation. RNA sequencing on patient cells demonstrated up-regulated gene expression related to mitosis and cell division, and cellular assays confirmed an increased proliferative capacity. A zebrafish model showed craniofacial anomalies and a defect in Foxd3-derived glia. These data suggest that the mechanism of germline mutations are distinct from cancer-associated somatic histone mutations but may converge on control of cell proliferation.

Im Fokus stehen Interaktionen ausserhalb des engen klinischen Kontexts, narrative Interviews und Fokusgruppendiskussionen, mit von einer psychischen Erkrankung betroffenen Personen und ihren Angehörigen. Anhand ausgewählter Fallanalysen untersucht der Beitrag zentrale Formen entsprechender Darstellungen und fragt nach sich daraus ergebenden Implikationen für die medizinisch-psychiatrische Praxis.

Abstract

In order to enhance the intercultural competence of engineering students, an international collaborative course in intralogistics education was initiated and realized between the Technical University of Munich in Germany and the Tongji University in China. In this course, students worked in global virtual teams (GVTs) and solved a concrete case study in the field of intralogistics in a virtual setting via modern communication tools. This paper introduced the course in detail and reported lessons learned from conducting the course and student feedback. The findings of this study suggested that teaching using GVT-based virtual exchange is effective in improving intercultural competence of engineering students. Abstract Extended cut-off filtration by medium cut-off membranes (MCO) has been shown to be safe in maintenance hemodialysis (HD). The notion of using them for the control of chronic low-grade inflammation and positively influencing cellular immune aberrations seems tempting. We conducted an open label, multicenter, randomized, 90 day 2-phase cross over clinical trial (MCO- vs. high flux-HD). 46 patients underwent randomization of which 34 completed the study. Dialysate- or pre- and post-dialysis serum inflammatory mediators were assayed for each study visit. Ex vivo T cell activation was assessed from cryopreserved leucocytes by flow cytometry. Linear mixed models were used to compare treatment modalities, with difference in pre-dialysis serum MCP-1 levels after 3 months as the predefined primary endpoint. Abstract

Free-space optical communication links are promising channels for establishing secure quantum communication. Here we study the transmission of nonclassical light through a turbulent atmospheric link under diverse weather conditions, including rain or haze. To include these effects, the theory of light transmission through atmospheric links in the elliptic-beam approximation presented by Vasylyev et al. [D. Vasylyev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 090501 (2016); arXiv:1604.01373] is further generalized.It is demonstrated, with good agreement between theory and experiment, that low-intensity rain merely contributes additional deterministic losses, whereas haze also introduces additional beam deformations of the transmitted light.
