Caring for cancer patients requires both technical and psychosocial nursing skills. The aim of this study was to determine the psychosocial care skill levels of nurses and affecting factors. This multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,189 nurses providing direct care to adult cancer patients in 32 hospitals in 12 geographical regions of Turkey. A questionnaire, the Psychosocial Skills Form, and the Professional Quality of Life Scale were used to collect the data. Nurses' psychosocial skill level was in the range of 2.72 ± 0.98 and 2.47 ± 0.89 out of four points. Communication skills such as empathic response, active listening, and the ability to provide information were found to be at a higher level than skills such as the activation of social support systems, therapeutic touch, and development of coping methods. Approximately 40% of nurses had received psychosocial care training, and 87% were interested in receiving additional psychosocial training. Gender, educational status, previous training in psychosocial care, and work experience with cancer patients were shown to affect psychosocial skill levels. There was a positive relationship between the level of psychosocial skills and the level of compassion satisfaction, and a negative relationship between the level of psychosocial skills and the level of burnout and compassion fatigue (p < 0.05). Nurses perceive themselves as having a medium to high level of psychosocial skills yet desire additional training. The results of this study may contribute to the development of training programs according to the needs of nurses who care for cancer patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Compassion fatigue, stress, and burnout have an adverse impact on nurse managers. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a compassion fatigue resiliency program on nurse managers and to obtain their views of the program. Methods: This mixed-methods study was conducted with 16 nurse managers. The compassion fatigue resiliency program was implemented; compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, burnout, perceived stress, and resilience were assessed before and after implementation of the program. Results: The mean compassion fatigue and perceived stress scores of nurses decreased significantly after the intervention. Four themes were identified from qualitative analysis, including awareness, coping with stress, effective communication skills in team management, and recommendations. Conclusions: The current study shows the training program reduced nurse managers' compassion fatigue and stress and enabled nurse managers to improve their coping skills and awareness. - Abstract
Objective: fertility is directly related to the socio-economic, political, and cultural structure of societies. Şanlıurfa is the Province with the highest fertility rate in Turkey. In Şanlıurfa, men play a decisive role regarding fertility-related issues. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine married men’s perspectives and reproductive behaviors on fertility in Şanlıurfa. Material and Method: the quantitative dimension of the study was carried out using a mixed methods approach in which 210 men were interviewed and a questionnaire was completed; the qualitative dimension was carried out through in-depth individual interviews with 8 men, using a semi-structured interview form. Analysis of the qualitative data was done using a content analysis technique. Results: in the quantitative dimension of this study, it was found that the mean number of children (3.2±2.0) in the families was high, and the most critical factor that increases the number of children was low education level (odds ratio [OR] 5.2, 95% Cl: 1.9-14.3) in men. In the qualitative dimension of this study, it was found that the most common factors increasing the number of children were "preference for male children, not knowing enough about contraceptive methods, using child labor force in agriculture, childcare being easier in an extended family." Besides, it was found that men perceive induced abortion as a sin, the crowded family as powerful, and their sons as insurance in old age. Conclusion: this study has shown that education, cultural norms, and values are instrumental in the fertility rate., NA

This study aimed to examine the psychosocial problems and their effects experienced by individuals diagnosed with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH syndrome) who had undergone surgical operations. Ten patients who had undergone a McIndoe operation after a MRKH syndrome diagnosis were recruited with a convenience sample. Data collection was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of a university hospital in Türkiye. This study produced four main themes: (1) Emotional Turmoil Upon Diagnosis, (2) Challenges to Sexual Identity and Intimate Relationships, (3) The Profound Impact of Infertility, and (4) Navigating the Complexities of Surgical Treatment. This study revealed that MRKH syndrome individuals experienced psychological reactions such as shock, resentment, anger, and sadness throughout their journey with the disease, including both before and after undergoing surgical operations. The study sheds light on the psychological needs of individuals (particularly during the initial diagnosis and postoperative period), offering important implications for nurses caring for such individuals. Background and Purpose : The Cancer Rehabilitation Evaluation System-Short Form (CARES-SF) is one of the first self-report measurement tools that addresses problems and rehabilitation needs of patients with cancer. This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the CARES-SF for Turkish-speaking patients with cancer. Methods : The Turkish version of the CARES-SF was administered to 300 patients with colorectal, lung, or breast cancer. Results : While the first six factors of the Turkish CARES-SF covered the same spectrum as the original scale's subscales, the present study suggests dividing the original psychosocial factors into two subscales: psychological and social (relatives and friends). Conclusions : This preliminary inquiry on the Turkish CARES-SF confirmed the validity and reliability of the original scale except for the shifting of a few items between subsections. - Abstract
Objectives: this study aimed to explore healthcare providers’ perceptions of noise in the intensive care unit. Design: a qualitative exploratory study was conducted using group interviews. Setting: the setting comprised a total of 15 participants (five physicians and ten registered nurses) working in an 18-bed medical surgical intensive care unit at a teaching hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. Semi-structured questions were formulated and used in focus group interviews, after which the recorded interviews were transcribed by the researchers. Thematic analysis was used to identify significant statements and initial codes. Findings: four themes were identified: the meaning of noise, sources of noise, effects of noise and prevention and management of noise. It was found that noise was an inevitable feature of the intensive care unit. The most common sources of noise were human-induced. It was also determined that device-induced noise, such as alarms, did not produce a lot of noise; however, when staff were late in responding, the sound transformed into noise. Furthermore, it was observed that efforts to decrease noise levels taken by staff had only a momentary effect, changing nothing in the long term because the entire team failed to implement any initiatives consistently. The majority of nurses stated that they were now becoming insensitive to the noise due to the constant exposure to device-induced noise. Conclusion: the data obtained from this study showed that especially human-induced noise threatened healthcare providers’ cognitive task functions, concentration and job performance, impaired communication and negatively affected patient safety. In addition, it was determined that any precautions taken to reduce noise were not fully effective. A team approach should be used in managing noise in intensive care units with better awareness.

- Abstract
Compassionate care behavior requires understanding others' values, establishing relationships with them, and re-sponding to them in meaningful ways. Compassionate care has important effects on patient care quality and is an indispensable element of patient-centered care. In recent years, studies of the effects of compassion on patients in clinical care have started to emerge. However, the literature reports that the effect of compassionate care on patient care has not been clearly defined nor has it been examined sufficiently. This review describes the benefits of compassionate care reported in the literature and example cases. It classifies the benefits of compassionate care as: positive effects on patient outcomes, improving nurses' understanding of involving patients and families in care, the ability to identify the needs of patients and families, and the ability to use appropriate approaches. Reviewing the factors that affect compassionate care positively or negatively is important in terms of guiding nursing practices. That is why this study also discusses the barriers to the provision of compassionate care related to work environment and individual factors and recommendations for compassionate care. - Abstract
The concept of compassion inherent in the nursing profession is a significant value. It motivates nurses to act ethically and in a sensitive way while providing care. Compassion is an essential element of good nursing care. Thus, compassionate care is not only a significant part of modern patient care but also a vital function of professional nursing. Although it is known as a fundamental characteristic of nursing, there are limited data about the characteristics of compassion. More data is needed regarding whether and how often compassion is included in nursing practices. As with the concept of compassion, there are difficulties with the exact definition of compassionate care, what compassionate care behaviors include, and how provision of compassionate care can be proven or measured. This review comprehensively discusses information regarding the concept of compassion and its significance in nursing, compassionate care, and compassionate care behaviors. We also discuss measurement of compassionate care in accordance with the current literature. - Abstract
The use of theory in the mental health field can be traced back before the 19th century. Later, with the detection of biological causes for the formation of mental health problems, psychosocial theories and biological approaches began to be used together. Accordingly, some authors tried to define the theoretical framework of psychiatric nursing, and it has been said that the biological and psychosocial theories used in the mental health field can also be used in the field of psychiatric nursing. This article discusses how psychiatric nurses can use the theories that constitute the framework of psychiatric nursing, and it explores this concept through the perspectives of the theories’ authors. - Abstract
Unless nursing practice is not based on theoretical foundations, it is not possible to consider it as a profession. Therefore, having a theoretical approach is very important for psychiatric nursing as well as in the all other areas of the profession. In addition, nursing should have a theoretical framework to provide direction and guidance for their applications. These frameworks which consist of different theoretical approaches constitute a guidance to explain and define the problems of patients. Alongside with nursing interventions in the light of theoretical framework, nursing care can gain a scientific basis. Some authors defined theoretical frameworks considering the most effective theories for psychiatric nursing practices, and some of them form theoretical frameworks considering the theories which are known as the most widely used in psychiatric nursing practices, whereas some authors have generated theoretical frameworks through the theories that are considered as the major theories for psychiatric nursing practices. In this article; the necessity of a theoretical framework for a profession, theoretical frameworks that are defined for psychiatric nursing and of the use of theories that exists within the theoretical framework at psychiatric nursing practices have been discussed in the light of existing literature.

'Compassion,' known as a fundamental feature of the nursing profession, and considered a motivation to act to alleviate the suffering of others. Compassion fatigue is expressed as an adverse effect of helping individuals suffering from traumatic events or otherwise. However, compassion fatigue is defined differently in in recent nursing studies, and the developmental process of compassion fatigue has been explained with the help of different models. Since compassion fatigue, a subject of interest for nurse researchers, lacks a clear understanding, it leads to a conceptual complexity in previous studies. In this review, compassion, compassion fatigue, concepts related to compassion fatigue, and the development of compassion fatigue are discussed in the light of previous studies. Objectives: Cancer tends to trigger a psychological response that represents a form of traumatic stress. Regardless of the nature of the noxious agent, therapeutic interventions conducted for the treatment of any post-traumatic reaction must take into consideration the tri-phasic structure of adaptation (i.e. shock, mourning and integration) in defining a balanced response to a vital threat. This paper aims to gather evidence on the psychosocial dimension of cancer by applying a three-phase approach model. Methods: To fulfill the stated aim, systematic reviews and meta-analyses on non-experimental studies published in the last 15 years were screened using the following databases: CINAHL, Pubmed, Cochrane, Joanna Briggs Institute, Ulakbim, and Google Scholar. Overall, 33 reviews met the inclusion criteria. Results: The obtained data, which included findings on different types of cancer and different psychiatric reactions, disclose the presence of a psychological trauma process that occurs in response to physical illness. Conclusion: The mental trauma process was studied and is discussed in three phases, namely, diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses how psychiatric nurses can use the theories that constitute the framework of psychiatric nursing, and it explores this concept through the perspectives of the theories' authors. This descriptive study has been carried out in order to assess the capability of the senior students of nursing schools for establishing nursing diagnosis. The study subjects are composed of senior students of Hacettepe University Nursing School, Istanbul University Florence Nightingale Nursing School, Ege University Nursing School, Cumhuriyet University Nursing School and Atatürk University Nursing School in 1993-1994 academic year. % 50 of all students, 196 subjects were eligible and included into the sample according to simple random sampling method. Chi- Square, Fisher1 s Exact Chi-Square Test.Kolmogorov Smirnov Two Sample Test and The Significance Test Between Proportions were employed in the evaluation of the data. While it was established that the students in the study were able to interpret data concerning physical disorders and make diagnosis more successfully, the number of students who could determine the etiological factors in the diagnosis were few. On the other hand, whilst the number of students who could make nursing diagnosis of psycho-social disorders are lower, percent age of the omes able to determine etiological factors in these disorders are higher. In sum, the number of students who both made a correct diagnosis and determined the etiological factors are established to be quite low. The most common error of the students in establishing nursing diagnosis was making wrong nursing diagnosis and confusing frequently the data and medical diagnosis with nursing diagnosis. The most common mistake in determining etiological factors was found to be writing data instead of etiological factors and this was followed by nursing diagnosis and incorrect etiological factors respectively. In the statistical evaluation of the difference between the two percentages, the effect of the school studied, being hospital diploma programme and the academic performance in vocational lessons on the performance of determining etiological factors and establishing diagnosis was found to be statistically insignificant. 110

Unless nursing practice is based on a sound theoretical foundation, it is not possible to consider it as a profession. Therefore, taking a theoretical approach is crucial for psychiatric nursing, as well as in other areas of the nursing profession. Ideally, nursing should be undergirded by a theoretical framework that provides direction and guides its applications. These guiding frameworks consist of various theoretical approaches that can explain and define the problems of patients. When nursing interventions are performed in the light of such theoretical frameworks, nursing care can gain a more scientific basis. Some authors have defined theoretical frameworks by considering the most effective ideas applicable to psychiatric nursing practices; some have formed theoretical frameworks by considering the most widely used theories in psychiatric nursing practice; and others have generated theoretical frameworks using major theories derived from psychiatric nursing practices. In this article, in light of the existing literature, we discuss the necessity of a theoretical framework for the profession, theoretical frameworks that have been formulated for psychiatric nursing, and the application of theories that exists within the framework of psychiatric nursing practices. Objective: Fertility is directly related to the socio-economic, political, and cultural structure of societies. 5anhurfa is the Province with the highest fertility rate in Turkey. In 5anhurfa, men play a decisive role regarding fertility-related issues. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine married men's perspectives and reproductive behaviors on fertility in 5anhurfa. Results: In the quantitative dimension of this study, it was found that the mean number of children (3.2±2.0) in the families was high, and the most critical factor that increases the number of children was low education level (odds ratio (OR] 5.2, 95% Cl: 1.9-14.3) in men. Conclusion: This study has shown that education, cultural norms, and values are instrumental in the fertility rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A team approach should be used in managing noise in intensive care units with better awareness., NA
