Introduction: The objective of this study was to assess stress and anxiety in a sample of elderly patients suffering from temporomandibular joint disorders who did not have previously diagnosed emotional disturbances. It is well known that patients presenting with temporomandibular joint disorders are more commonly affected by anxiety and depression. However, there is a lack of data regarding the prevalence of undiagnosed anxiety and emotional stress disorders among elderly patients with temporomandibular joint disorders. Materials and Method: Clinical examination was performed using Research Diagnostic Criteria (Axis I). Patients with previously diagnosed and managed psychiatric and psychological disorders were excluded. Magnetic resonance imaging findings were also used to confirm the diagnosis. Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory forms were obtained to assess stress and anxiety levels. Results: A total of 125 patients (103 [82.4%] women and 22 [17.6%] men) aged 60 to 87 (71.89 ± 10.39) years were included. The highest depression and anxiety scores were found among patients suffering from bruxism, followed by those with disc displacement without reduction and myofascial pain syndrome. All the patients showed significantly elevated depression levels. Conclusion: The emotional health status of elderly patients with intraand extra-articular temporomandibular joint disorders should be attentively assessed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study is the histological and immunohistochemical evaluation of ex vivo produced oral mucosal equivalents using keratinocytes cultured by direct explant technique. Material and Methods: Oral mucosa tissue samples were obtained from the keratinized gingival tissues of 14 healthy human subjects. Human oral mucosa keratinocytes from an oral mucosa biopsy specimen were dissociated by the explant technique. Once a sufficient population of keratinocytes was reached, they were seeded onto the type IV collagen coated "AlloDerm" and taken for histological and immunohistochemical examinations at 11days postseeding of the keratinocytes on the cadaveric human dermal matrix. Results: Histopathologically and immunohistochemically, 12 out of 14 successful ex vivo produced oral mucosa equivalents (EVPOME) that consisted of a stratified epidermis on a dermal matrix have been developed with keratinocytes cultured by the explant technique. Conclusion: The technical handling involved in the direct explant method at the beginning of the process has fewer steps than the enzymatic method and use of the direct explant technique protocol for culturing of human oral mucosa keratinocyte may be more adequate for EVPOME production. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the losses in pulp vitalites occurring in teeth adjacent to the mobilized segment following premaxillary distraction osteogenesis. Twelve patients (4 males and 8 females) constituted the study group. Electrical pulp test was used to assess the vitality of the upper first bicuspids, canines and lateral and central incisors adjacent to the mobilized segment. Tests were quantitatively performed preoperatively, and on the 5th, 7th, 10th, 30th and 60th postoperative days. The affection and healing processes of the 24 upper central and lateral incisors examined were in parallel with each other. The affection and healing processes of the 12 canines which were vital preoperatively and included in the statistical analysis were significantly different from the other teeth when the vitality levels of the canines and small first bicuspids adjacent to the osteotomy line were assessed. However, a positive response was achieved in all the teeth on the 60th postoperative day. No sensorial loss was detected in small bicuspids which were adjacent to osteotomy line, and however, not present in the segment. In order to preserve the pulpal blood during osteotomies of the jaws, a safety margin of 5 mm is recommended between the apices of the teeth and the osteotomy line. Premaxillary distraction osteogenesis is a safe procedure regarding the pulpal changes of the teeth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
