Objective: In this study, it was aimed to examine the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of patients hospitalized in Ankara City Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit during the pandemic period. Material and Methods: Medical records of children and adolescents who were hospitalized in Ankara City Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit between March 2021 and March 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were evaluated in terms of sociodemographic characteristics, clinical diagnosis and treatment, duration of hospitalization, and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) scores at admission and discharge. Results: In our study, the mean age of 132 cases (86 girls, 46 boys) was found 15.1±1.8 years. The main diagnoses of the subjects were 30.3% (n=40) major depressive disorder, 25% (n=33) psychotic disorder, 14.4% (n=19) eating disorders, and the remaining 30.3% (n=40) were other disorders. Comorbidity was found in 63.6% (n=84) of the cases. The presence of eating disorders, comorbidity and antidepressant use were found significantly higher in females. There was a significant differences in major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), psychotic disorder, eating disorder, conduct disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) between admission and discharge CGI-Severity (CGI-S) scores. In addition, there was a significant difference between admission and discharge CGI side effects scores only for BD. Conclusion: In our study, major depressive disorder, psychotic disorder, and eating disorder were the most common diagnoses of cases hospitalized in inpatient unit. There was a comorbidity accompanying two out of every three cases. There are few child and adolescent psychiatry services in our country, and studies on this subject are scarce. It is thought that our study will contribute to the literature on child and adolescent psychiatry inpatient units.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate asthma control status, drug compliance and anxiety levels of children and their parents who were followed up with the diagnosis of asthma during the COVID-19 pandemic.Material and Methods: Sixty-seven children aged between 8-12 years diagnosed with asthma and their parents were prospectively recruited to the study. A questionnaire including demographic features such as age, gender, asthma medications and questions about COVID-19 prepared according to a 5-point Likert scale was conducted to the parents. Children completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventories for Children (STAI-C) scales, and childhood asthma control test(c-ACT). Parents also fulfilled STAI scales. Results: The mean age of the patients was 9.5±1.2 years, the median follow-up period for asthma (C-ACT) was 36 (21-66) months, and 45 (67.2%) were male. Most of the children were using their asthma medication regularly. Children’s STAI-C state and trait anxiety scores showed a statistically significant positive correlation with parents’ STAI state and trait anxiety scores. The anxiety levels of parents who thought that they would get the disease and that there would be no effective treatment and vaccine against COVID-19 were found to be higher.Conclusion: During the pandemic period, regular asthma follow-up and drug compliance are very important controlling asthma symptoms in children. Considering the effects of the pandemic in children with asthma, psychosocial evaluations during outpatient controls may have positive effects on children’s mental health and disease control., Amaç: Çalışmamızda astımlı çocuklarda ve ailelerinde yeni tip coronavirüs hastalığı (COVID-19) döneminde astım kontrol durumları, ilaç uyumları ve kaygı düzeylerinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Çalışmaya en az altı aydır astım tanısıyla izlenen 8-12 yaş arası 67 çocuk ve ebeveynleri dahil edilmiştir. Ebeveynlere yaş, cinsiyet, astım ilaçları gibi demografik özellikleri ve 5’li Likert ölçeğine göre hazırlanmış COVID-19 ile ilgili soruları içeren anket yapılmıştır. Ayrıca çocukluk çağı astım kontrol anketi (AKT) ve kaygı düzeyini değerlendirmek için çocuklara Çocuklar İçin Durumluk-Sürekli Kaygı Envanteri (Ç-DSKE), ebeveynlere de Erişkinler için Durumluk-Sürekli Kaygı Envanteri (DSKE) uygulanmıştır.Bulgular: Hastaların ortalama yaşı 9.5±1.2 yıl, astım takip süresi ortancası (çeyrekler arası aralık) 36 (21-66) aydı ve 45’i (%67.2) erkekti. Çocukların çoğu astım ilaçlarını düzenli kullanıyordu. Çocukların Ç-DSKE durumluk ve sürekli kaygı puanları, ebeveynlerin DSKE durumluk ve süreklik kaygı puanlarıyla istatistiksel olarak anlamlı pozitif yönde korelasyon gösteriyordu. Hastalığı geçireceğini, COVID-19’a karşı etkili tedavi ve aşı bulunamayacağını düşünen ebeveynlerin kaygı düzeyleri daha yüksek bulundu. Çocukların cinsiyeti, astım takip süreleri, astım kontrol durumları, düzenli takibe gelme ve astım ilacını düzenli kullanmasına göre gruplandırılarak karşılaştırıldığında yine çocuk Ç-DSKE ve ebeveynlerin DSKE skorları arasında fark yoktu.Sonuç: Pandemi döneminde düzenli kontrol ve ilaç uyumu çocuklarda astım semptomlarının kontrol altına alınmasında son derece önemlidir. Astımlı çocuklarda pandeminin etkileri de göz önünde bulundurularak poliklinik kontrolleri sırasında psikososyal değerlendirilmelerinin yapılması çocukların ruh sağlığı ve hastalık kontrolü üzerinde olumlu etkileri olabilir.

Aim:Dietary factors are considered one of the possible environmental risk factors for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to demonstrate the relationship between ADHD and celiac disease (CD) and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) in children.Materials and Methods:In this prospective study, children with ADHD, aged 6-18 years, were asked about the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms and their relationship with gluten intake with a previously prepared questionnaire form. Also, they were screened for CD [anti-tissue transglutaminase immunoglobulin (Ig) A and total IgA] and NCGS (anti-gliadin IgA/IgG antibodies).Results:Of the 117 children (76% male), the mean age was 9.2±2.4 years. Ninety-six patients (82%) had no gastrointestinal complaints. There was no relationship between gluten intake and complaints in the patients who had constipation (12.8%), recurrent abdominal pain (2.5%), dyspeptic symptoms (1.7%), and irritable bowel syndrome (0.8%). None of the patients had anti-tissue transglutaminase IgA or IgG positivity. Only 1 (0.8%) patient had anti-gliadin IgA, and 6 (5.1%) patients had anti-gliadin IgG positivity. There was no relation between the presence of symptoms and anti-gliadin IgG positivity (p=0.08).Conclusion:There was no increase in the frequency of CD and NCGS in children with ADHD.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the clinical and developmental characteristics of toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); and find out early manifestations. Material and method: Medical records of 134 newly diagnosed children under 4 years of age and followed by both developmental-behavioral pediatrics, and child and adolescent psychiatry between January 2017 and May 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Developmental features of children who diagnosed ≤24 months of age and later were compared. Results: ASD diagnosis was performed at ≤24 and >24 months of age in 43 (32.1%) and 91 (67.9%) children, respectively. The most common concern expressed by parents at admission was language delay (46.2%). While only 1.5% of parents named “autism” spontaneously as a concern, 73.9% of parents expressed concerns about ASD when the history was deepened. Parental concern about ASD (p=0.031) and mother’s education level ≥8 years (p=0.002) were associated with earlier diagnosis. Children diagnosed at ≤24 months of age were more likely to have inability to follow verbal commands (p=0.012) and delayed motor milestones (p=0.008). Other ASD signs and clinical characteristics were similar between children who diagnosed at ≤24 and >24 months of age. Conclusion: The signs of ASD emerge over the first 2 years of life. Children who diagnosed ASD ≤24 months of age have poorer receptive language and motor skills. Whereas parents were recognising warming signs of ASD, they may not express their concerns clearly. Pediatricians should take time to listen to parents and realize their concerns reflecting ASD.

Background Symptomatic COVID-19 cases in children occur mostly in those with primary immunodeficiency (PID), chronic lung diseases, and heart disease. Guidelines recommend that patients with PID continue to use their regular medication during the pandemic. Objectives This study aimed to evaluate anxiety related to COVID-19 in the parents of patients receiving intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment in our hospital and to evaluate the effect of their anxiety on the continuity of treatment. Methods The parents of the patients who underwent IVIG therapy in our clinic during the pandemic (between May 15, 2020 and July 1, 2020) were included in our study. Results Twenty-seven patients with PID whose IVIG therapy was initiated before the pandemic and 29 non- PID control subjects were included in the study. All patients received IVIG treatment in our clinic continued treatment during the pandemic at the same dose intervals. Parents in the IVIG group had significantly higher state (p=0.003) and trait (p=0.003) anxiety scores compared to control parents. IVIG group showed statistically significant higher scores in Beck depression inventory, than the control group (p=0.002). Conclusions The parents of PID patients who needed to come to the hospital for IVIG therapy had higher anxiety levels than the parents of similar aged children who presented to our clinic for different complaints between the same dates. Despite their concerns, the parents of all patients under IVIG therapy maintained treatment continuity at the recommended treatment intervals. None of our immunodeficient patients who presented for treatment during the pandemic contracted COVID-19 infection during our study.

Objective Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder frequently seen in childhood with deficits in many areas of functioning. Although the etiology of SLD is known to be multifactorial, research findings are limited. In this study, we aimed to compare the serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in children with SLD to healthy children to find out whether BDNF has a role in the pathophysiology of SLD. Method The study included 30 children between the ages of 7-12, diagnosed with SLD and 30 age and gender matched healthy controls. The groups were tested on the Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia Interview Schedule for School-age Children-Now and Lifetime Form (K-SADS-PL), the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-revised form (WISC-R), the Teacher Information Form (TIF) and the Specific Learning Difficulty Battery (SLDB). Results No difference the serum BDNF levels in children with SLD and the healthy controls. BDNF levels did not correlate with the WISC-R scores and reading rate in the SLD group. Conclusion An association was not determined between SLD and and serum BDNF levels. Our study was the first to investigate this relationship and provided preliminary data on this topic. There is a need for further studies with large patient groups of phenotypic homogeneity.

Information on psychological problems and affecting factors in children hospitalized with the suspicion or diagnosis of COVID-19 is limited. We aimed to screen the psychiatric symptoms of children hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ankara City Children`s Hospital and evaluate the caregivers` depression, anxiety, stress, and resilience levels during hospitalization.Among the children and adolescents hospitalized in Ankara City Children`s Hospital between 1 May 2020 and 31 May 2020 due to the diagnosis of COVID-19, those who agreed to participate in the study were included. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS- 21) scale, and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) were used to determine the symptoms.The mean age of study group (n = 49) was 8.7 ± 5.0 years, 59.2% (n = 29) were girls. The mean children`s SDQ-externalizing problems scores were higher in the COVID-19 positive mothers group than the COVID-19 negative mothers` group. The SDQ-total score was positively and strongly correlated with the DASS total score, DASS-depression score, and DASS-anxiety score. BRS scale scores were negatively correlated with the SDQtotal, externalizing, and DASS-21scale scores.COVID-19 positivity in mothers could be associated with externalizing problems in children. The high resilience of caregivers of inpatients seems to be related to less psychopathology in children. During hospitalization, caregivers` psychological evaluation and psychosocial support may be important for preventive child mental health.

Amaç: Ergenlik dönemindeki intihar girişimi, tüm dünyada yaygın bir halk sağlığı sorunudur. İntihar davranışı için biyolojik, psikolojik ve sosyal olmak üzere pek çok risk faktörü bulunmaktadır. Ergen intiharlarında, intiharla ilişkili davranışlarla ebeveyne güvensiz bağlanmanın ilişkisi çeşitli çalışmalarda gösterilmiştir. Ülkemizde ergenlerde bağlanma ve intihar girişimi arasındaki ilişkiyi inceleyen az sayıda araştırma bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, intihar davranışı olan ve olmayan ergenlerde anneye bağlanma ve intihar davranışıyla ilişkili diğer faktörlerin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.Yöntem: İntihar girişimi nedeniyle bir eğitim araştırma hastanesine başvuran 49 ergen çalışma grubu olarak, intihar girişim öyküsü bulunmayan 47 sağlıklı ergen ise kontrol grubu olarak çalışmaya alındı. Tüm katılımcılara sosyodemografik veri formu, Çocuklar için Depresyon Ölçeği (ÇGÖ), Ebeveyn ve Arkadaşlara Bağlanma Envanteri- Kısa Formu (EABE-KF), İntihar Davranışı Ölçeği (İDÖ), Güçler ve Güçlükler Anketi-Ergen Formu (GGA) verildi ve Okul Çağı Çocukları için Duygulanım Bozuklukları ve Şizofreni Görüşme Çizelgesi- Şimdi ve Yaşam Boyu Şekli uygulandı. Bulgular: İntihar girişimi grubunda %81.6 oranında psikopatoloji saptandı. İntihar girişiminde bulunan grubun, GGA akran sorunları alt ölçeği dışındaki tüm alt ölçeklerinin (duygusal, davranışsal, hiperaktivite, dışavurum ve içeatım) puan ortalamaları, ÇDÖ puan ortalamaları, İDÖ toplam puan, İDÖ-1, İDÖ-2 ve İDÖ-4 puan ortalamaları sağlıklı kontrollerden istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde daha yüksekken, EABÖ anne bağlanma ölçek ortancası anlamlı düzeyde daha düşüktü. İDÖ toplam, İDÖ-1 ve İDÖ-2 ve İDÖ-4 puanları ile ÇDÖ puanı ve GGA toplam puanı ve tüm alt ölçek puanları arasında pozitif korelasyon, EABÖ anne bağlanma alt ölçeği puanı ile ise negatif korelasyon saptandı. Lojistik regresyon analizinde, EABÖ anne bağlanma ölçek puanları İDÖ toplam ve İDÖ-4 puanlarını yordamakta idi.Tartışma: İntihar grubunda anneye bağlanma puanlarının düşük olması güvensiz bağlanmanın intihar davranışı için önemli bir risk faktörü olabileceği şeklindeki yazınla uyumludur. İntihar girişimi olan ergenlerde anneye bağlanma, intiharın ciddiyeti ve gelecekteki intihar niyetini yordamaktadır. Ebeveyn-ergen bağlanmasını iyileştirecek yaklaşımlar, intiharın önlenmesi açısından önemli rol oynayabilir. Bu alanda ileri çalışmalara gereksinim bulunmaktadır., Objective: Adolescent suicide attempt is a common public health problem all over the world. There are many biological, psychological and social risk factors for suicidal behavior. In adolescent suicides, the relationship between suicidal behaviors and insecure attachment to parents has been shown in various studies. In our country, there are few studies examining the relationship between attachment and suicide attempt in adolescents. In this study, we aimed to investigate other factors related to mother attachment and suicidal behavior in adolescents with and without suicidal behavior.Methods: Of 49 adolescents who admitted to a training and research hospital for suicide attempt were included in the study group and 47 healthy adolescents whose no history of suicide attempt were included. All participants were applied a sociodemographic data form, Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Inventory of Parents and Peer Attachment-Short Form (IPPA-SF), Suicidal Behavior Scale (SBS), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire-Adolescent Form (SDQ-A) and Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime (K-SADS).Results: Psychopathology was found in 81.6% of the suicide attempts group. The mean scores of all the subscales (emotional, behavioral, hyperactivity, expression and introductory) of the group attempting suicide except the GGA peer problems subscale, the mean scores of CDI, the total score of SBS and SBS-1, SBS-2 and SBS-4 subscale scores were significantly higher and the median IPPA-SF scale was significantly lower than that of the healthy control group. There was a positive correlation between total score of SBS, SBS-1, SBS-2, SBS-4, CDI, SDQ total score and its all subscale scores whereas a negative correlation was found with IPPA-SF maternal attachment subscale score. In the logistic regression analysis, the IPPA-SF mother attachment scale scores was predicted by SBS total score and SBS-4 subscale score.Discussion: The low attachment scores to the mother in the suicide group are consistent with the literature that insecure attachment may be an important risk factor for suicidal behavior. In adolescents with suicide attempts, attachment to the mother predicts the seriousness of suicide and the intention of future suicide. Approaches to improve parent-adolescent attachment may play an important role in preventing suicide. Further studies are needed in this field.

EgeUn###, Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of childhood psychopathologies in Turkey. Method: A nation-wide, randomly selected, representative population of 5830 children (6-13 years-old) enrolled as a 2nd,3rd or 4th grade student in 30 cities were evaluated for presence of a psychiatric or mental disorder by a Sociodemographic Form, Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL), and DSM-IV-Based Screening Scale for Disruptive Behavior Disorders in Children and Adolescents scales. Impairment criterion was assessed via a 3 point-Likert scale by the parent and the teacher independently. Results: Overall prevalence of any psychopathology was 37.6% without impairment criterion, and 17.1% with impairment criterion. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder was the most frequent diagnosis, followed by anxiety (19.5% and 16.7% without impairment, 12.4% and 5.3% with impairment, respectively). Lower education level and presence of a physical or psychiatric problem of the parents were independent predictors of any psychopathology of the offspring. Conclusion: This is the largest and most comprehensive epidemiological study to determine the prevalence of psychopathologies in children and adolescents in Turkey. Our results partly higher than, and partly comparable to previous national and international studies. It also contributes to the literature by determining the independent predictors of psychopathologies in this age group.

Amac: Ergenler arasinda akran zorbaligi evrensel bir sorundur. Calismada klinik orneklemde ergenlerde akran zorbaliginin demografik degiskenler, siber zorbalik, siber magduriyet ve ofke ifade tarzlariyla iliskisinin incelenmesi amaclanmistir. Gerec ve Yontemler: Cocuk psikiyatri poliklinigine basvuran 61 ergen calismaya alindi. Sosyodemografik form, Surekli Ofke ve Ofke Tarz Olcegi, Akran Zorbaligi Belirleme Olcegi-Ergen Formu, Siber Zorbalik Olcegi ve Siber Magduriyet Olcekleri kullanildi. Ergenlerde psikopatoloji varligi DSM-5 olcutleri esas alinarak yapilan klinik degerlendirme ile belirlendi. Bulgular: Calismaya katilan 61 ergenin %57.4’u kizdi. Yas ortancasi 15 yildi (min=11, maks= 18 yil). Ergenlerin %27.9’u magdur, %45.9’u hem zorba hem magdur ve %4.9’u zorba olarak tanimlandi. Diger siniflandirmayla ergenlerin %78.7’sinin zorba/magdur dongusunde olduklari saptandi. En sik gorulen zorbalik turu; sozel zorbalik (%37.7), en sik gorulen magduriyet turu ise fiziksel magduriyetti (%60.7). Protez varligi magdur grubunda anlamli duzeyde yuksek bulundu (p=0.041). Zorbaligin orta ergenlikte anlamli duzeyde yuksek (p=0.026), zorbalarin akademik basarisinin daha kotu oldugu bulundu (p=0.008). Magdurlarin babalarinin anlamli olarak dusuk duzeyde egitim almis olduklari saptandi (p=0.036). Background The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life (QoL) of mothers of children with Down syndrome (DS) and the factors related to it. Methods Seventy-five DS child-mother diads and 54 healthy child-mother diads were included in this study. The brief World Health Organization Quality of Life scale - Turkish version (WHOQOL-BREF-TR), Symptom Check List-90-Revised (SCL-90-TR), Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were completed by mothers to assess maternal QoL, burnout, anxiety, depression and general psychiatric symptoms. Results Mothers of DS children had significantly higher SCL-90 general symptom index scores, Beck depressive symptom scores and higher scores in all domains of the brief World Health Organization Quality of Life scale - (WHOQOL-BREF-TR) except the WHOQOL-BREF-TR-psychological health domain. MBI personal achievement scores were weakly correlated with psychological health in mothers of DS children. There was a reverse correlation between comorbid disorders and the WHOQOL-BREF-TR psychological health domain, and a weak correlation between sex (having a baby girl with DS) and increased WHOQOL-BREF-TR physical health domain score. Number of offspring was negatively correlated with maternal social quality of life. Conclusion Mothers of children with DS are negatively affected in terms of QoL and mental health, even in the early period. It would be useful to systematically screen these mothers and to refer them for appropriate intervention at an early stage.

Objective Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in adolescence, however, the etiology has not been described. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is one potential factor that may be involved in the etiology of ADHD. The goal of this study was to evaluate NPY levels in children with ADHD and compare the findings to healthy controls. Methods Forty-eight ADHD patients and 40 healthy controls were included in this study. The age range of ADHD patients was 6 to 16 years. All patients were diagnosed according to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). Results The NPY levels of children with ADHD were compared to healthy controls but were not significantly different (t (86)= -0.887, p= 0.378). NPY levels were similar (F= 0.191, p= 0.826) between ADHD presentations, and included 8 children with predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type (14.3%), 14 children with predominantly inattentive type (30.4%), and 26 children with a combined type (55.4%). There was also no difference between ADHD patients using medical treatment, ADHD patients not using medical treatment, and control subjects in terms of NPY levels (F= 0.572, p= 0.566). There was a significant positive correlation between age and NPY levels in the ADHD group (r= 0.349, p= 0.015). Conclusion This study demonstrated that the NPY levels of ADHD subjects were not different than those of controls. Future studies with homogeneous phenotypes and a larger sample population are needed.

Methods: This study was conducted as a part of the "The Epidemiology of Childhood Psychopathology in Turkey" (EPICPAT-T) Study, which was designed by the Turkish Association of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. The inclusion criterion was being a student between the second and fourth grades in the schools assigned as study centers. The assessment tools used were the K-SADS-PL, and a sociodemographic form that was designed by the authors. Impairment was assessed via a 3 point-Likert type scale independently rated by a parent and a teacher. Results: A total of 5842 participants were included in the analyses. The prevalence of affective disorders was 2.5 % without considering impairment and 1.6 % when impairment was taken into account. In our sample, the diagnosis of bipolar disorder was lacking, thus depressive disorders constituted all the cases. Among depressive disorders with impairment, major depressive disorder (MDD) (prevalence of 1.06%) was the most common, followed by dysthymia (prevalence of 0.2%), adjustment disorder with depressive features (prevalence of 0.17%), and depressive disorder-NOS (prevalence of 0.14%). There were no statistically significant gender differences for depression. Maternal psychopathology and paternal physical illness were predictors of affective disorders with pervasive impairment. Conclusion: MDD was the most common depressive disorder among Turkish children in this nationwide epidemiological study. This highlights the severe nature of depression and the importance of early interventions. Populations with maternal psychopathology and paternal physical illness may be the most appropriate targets for interventions to prevent and treat depression in children and adolescents.

Objective: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic disease affecting both the child and the family system. The mental state of the family can be affected with the burden brought on by the disease, and family functioning can become problematic. Coping abilities and strategies are important in determining the psychological adjustment in difficult situations. The aim of this study was to evaluate psychiatric symptoms, parental attitudes and coping strategies in mothers of children with CF and to examine the relationship of psychiatric symptoms with parental attitudes and coping skills. Material and Methods: The study included the mothers of 35 children with CF and of 40 children with acute medical problems and no chronic diseases. The Symptom Checklist-90-Revised, the COPE inventory, the Parent Attitude Research Instrument and the sociodemographic information form were used in the evaluation of the subjects. Results: All scores on the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised were higher than the control group in mothers of children with CF. Additionally; these mothers had higher scores on dependency and strictness/authoritarianism on the Parent Attitude Research Instrument. In the COPE inventory; focus on and venting of emotions, denial, religious coping and acceptance subscale scores were higher, whereas humor, use of instrumental social support and planning subscale scores were lower in mothers of children with CF. When mothers of children with CF were categorized according to the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised Global Severity Index with a cut-off score of “1”; mothers with scores higher than 1 suggesting psychopathology had higher scores for rejection of the homemaking role and marital conflict and coping strategies such as mental disengagement, denial, use of emotional social support, and ways of maladaptive composites. Conclusion: Coping abilities, marital relationship and mental health are negatively affected in mothers of children with CF. There is a need for further studies and developing programs that will improve the coping skills and provide psychosocial support for mothers of children with CF in our country.

Although genetic factors have been thought to be main cause for gender dysphoria, its etiology is still not clearly understood. Klinefelter syndrome is the most seen sex chromosomal disorder. In the literature, there are fewer case reports in connection with Klinefelter syndrome and gender dysphoria. Herein, we report a 16-year-old adolescent patient displaying gender dysphoria features, who has revealed Klinefelter syndrome after genetic examination, and has been treated with testosterone hormone, and his gender dysphoria symptoms have disappeared. In our case, chromosomal anomaly and lower levels of androgen could play a role in the etiopathogenesis of gender dysphori. Bringing Klinefelter syndrome disorder to mind in gender dysphoria cases, even it is a rare disorder, could positively affect the course of the treatment as was in our case. The relation between psychiatric symptoms, which can be seen in gender dysphoria, and testosterone does not known exactly. Further studies, which are randomized-controlled ones, can help to better understand the subject.

Objective: We aimed to study characteristics of child and mother reported parenting styles of children with Attention Deficit Hyperacitivity Disorder (ADHD) and association of parenting styles of mothers with demographic and clinical variables like ADHD symptoms, sex, age, ADHD subtype, and comorbidity. Method: 58 children with ADHD and 30 healthy children were included in this study. All children were assessed by The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged ChildrenPresent and Lifetime Version. ADHD symptom severity was assessed by The Conners Parent Rating Scale and The Conners Teacher Rating Scale. The Parenting Style Inventory (PSI) and The Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) were used to assess parenting styles of mothers. Results: ADHD group had lower scores on two subscales of PSI (acceptance/involvement and strictness/supervision) and democratic attitude and equality subscale of PARI and higher scores on strict discipline subscale of PARI compared to control group. In ADHD group, higher symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder were associated with higher mother's strict discipline scores and lower child reported mother's acceptance/involvement scores. Conclusion: Our findings supported the idea that there may be an association between parenting attitudes and ADHD symptoms in families having a child with ADHD. These results indicated the importance of integrated approach to ADHD diagnosis and treatment and evaluating the child with ADHD in the context of family environment.

Identification and treatment of familial factors may enhance the treatment efficacy in encopresis.

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most frequently occurring neuropsychiatric disorder in childhood with an etiology that is not fully understood. A number of reviews that have addressed the neurobiology of ADHD have focused on imaging and genetics. Relatively little attention has been given to factors/mechanisms involved in the brain dysfunction. We suggest that changes in cellular immunity may be involved. Neopterin is a good indicator of cellular immunity, and we evaluated serum levels of neopterin in patients with ADHD. The study group consisted of 49 patients with ADHD. An age- and gender-matched control group was composed of 31 healthy subjects. Venous blood samples were collected, and the levels of neopterin were measured. The levels of neopterin were significantly higher in ADHD than in the comparison subjects. Cellular immunity may have a role in the etiopathogenesis of ADHD. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Background Anxiety disorders are common in children and adolescents, and they can significantly impair quality of life. Genetic, neurobiological, neurochemical, and psychological factors are believed to play a role in the etiopathogenesis of anxiety disorders. Recent evidence suggests that the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders may be associated with oxidative stress. In this study, we investigated whether there are associations between children with anxiety disorders and total oxidant/antioxidant status. Methods The experimental group consisted of 40 patients (children and adolescents) with anxiety disorders. An age- and gender-matched control group composed of 35 healthy subjects was also assessed. Venous blood samples were collected and total antioxidative status (TAS), total oxidative status (TOS), and the oxidative stress index (OSI) were determined. Results Both the TOS and the OSI of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group. There were no significant differences in TAS between the experimental and control groups. Limitations The main limitation of our study was the small sample size. Conclusions This study suggests that oxidative balance is impaired in children with anxiety disorders. Oxidative stress may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of anxiety disorders, and TOS may be a useful diagnostic tool in this context.

PubMed: 30102477, The aim of this study was to investigate psychiatric disorders, depression and anxiety levels, and quality of life in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF), and to compare them with those of children with non-cystic fibrosis (non-CF) bronchiectasis and healthy controls. A total of 103 children and adolescents aged 7-16 years (35 CF, 28 non-CF bronchiectasis, 40 healthy) were evaluated using The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children (K-SADS), The Child Depression Inventory (CDI), The State-Trait Anxiety Inventories for Children (STAI-C) and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL)-C. The three groups were not statistically different with respect to age, sex, and familial sociodemographic variables. 80% of the children and adolescents in the CF group were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, which was significantly more compared to those of the two other groups. The CF group had significantly greater rates of depressive and oppositional defiant disorder and the non-bronchiectasis group had a significantly greater rate of anxiety disorder than the control group. The depression and anxiety symptom levels were significantly greater and the quality of life levels significantly lower in both the CF and non-CF bronchiectasis groups than the healthy controls. In the CF group, the presence of any associated psychiatric disorder led to significantly lower total and psychosocial quality of life scores. In conclusion, CF is associated with poorer QOL in childhood. In order to improve quality of life in CF, the psychiatric conditions of children and adolescents should also be evaluated and their follow-up and treatment should involve a multidisciplinary team approach. © 2018, Turkish Journal of Pediatrics. Objective: Urotensin-II (U-II) is one of the most vasoconstrictive substrates for the mammals. Lately, this substrate is thought to be responsible for developing of the neuropsychiatric disorders, by causing an abnormal brain bloodstream situation. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are frequently seen disorders in childhood and their etiologies are remain unclear. This study evaluated the serum urotensin-II levels of children with ASD and ADHD and compared with healthy subjects' urotensin-II levels. Methods: Total of 179 children between age of 4-12, 60 of them diagnosed with ADHD and 60 of children with ASD, according to the DSM-5 criteria and both had no treatment for at least a month and 59 of healthy subjects whom they all admitted to the Ankara Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Training and Research Hospital were included. Objective Numerous factors, including genetic, neurobiological, neurochemical, and psychological factors, are thought to be involved in the development of anxiety disorders. The latest findings show that the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders might be associated with oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation; however, no studies have so far investigated lipid peroxidation markers in children with anxiety disorders. Serum levels of lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) are a reliable marker of lipid peroxidation. Paraoxonase and arylesterase are two enzymes that protect against such peroxidation, and might also be diagnostic markers. In this study, we investigated whether there are associations between anxiety disorders and lipid peroxidation markers in children, and assessed the diagnostic performance of these markers. Methods The study group consisted of 37 patients (children and adolescents) with anxiety disorders. A control group, matched for age and gender, was composed of 36 healthy subjects. Venous blood samples were collected, and LOOH levels and paraoxonase and arylesterase activity were measured. Results LOOH levels were significantly higher in the anxiety disorders group than in the control group. There were no significant differences in paraoxonase or arylesterase activities between the patient and the control groups. Discussion Lipid peroxidation or oxidative damage might play a role in the aetiopathogenesis of anxiety disorders. LOOH may be a potential biological marker for anxiety disorders in children.

The etiopathogeny of ADHD has not been totally defined. Recent reports have suggested a pathophysiological role of neurotrophins in ADHD. In this study, we evaluated serum levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) in patients with ADHD. The sample population consisted of 44 child or adolescent patients diagnosed with ADHD according to DSM-IV criteria; 36 healthy subjects were included in the study as controls. Venous blood samples were collected, and NGF levels were measured. The mean serum NGF levels of the ADHD patients were significantly higher than those of the controls. Age and gender of the patients were not correlated with serum NGF levels. There were no significant differences in NGF levels among the combined and predominantly inattentive subtypes of ADHD. Our study suggests that there are higher levels of serum NGF in drug naive ADHD patients, and that increased levels of NGF might have an important role in the pathophysiology of ADHD.

Background: To evaluate of child or adolescent with specific learning disorder (SLD) was aimed and if there are any distinctive patterns of Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) performance, accepted as a determiner of cognitive functioning, was explored. Method: Over a-year period of data related to SLD diagnosed with DSM-IV-TR criteria was reviewed. Socio-demographic and clinical features were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0 program. Results: In a year of period, 716/25,013 had any type of SLD (2.9%). Mean age was 8.9±1.7 years with 65.4% of boys and 87.2% of under 12-year-old group. The majority of SLD subtype was “reading disorder (71.6%)”. There was no difference of SLD subtypes either distribution between sexes or age groups. Neither verbal IQ nor performance IQ was significantly different amongst four subtypes of SLD as well as total IQ scores. Also any relation was not found between subtypes of SLD and sexes or age groups in the distribution of WISC-R scores terms. Also there were not any consistent discrepancy patterns (VIQ>PIQ or PIQ>VIQ) in SLD subtypes. The presence of “reading disorder” was found significantly related with attention deficit-hyperactivity (ADHD) comorbidity (X2=7.006, p=0.008). Conclusions and Recommendations: ADHD is one of neurodevelopmental disorders and its presence could very well affect the SLD or vice versa. Further research would make clear both the relation between ADHD and SLD. Alongside cognitive measurements by using a number of intelligence scales would be enlightening in SLD field.

The aim of this study was to examine clinical outcomes, psychiatric comorbidity and neuropsychological characteristics in Turkish adolescents with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis in childhood. A total of 45 children with ADHD diagnosis and 28 children with a psychiatric diagnosis other than ADHD in a 1-year cohort of 7-10-year-olds were reevaluated 6 years later using Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children Present and Lifetime version and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised and Stroop Test TBAG version. This study shows that the clinical outcomes and the comorbidity patterns for ADHD from childhood to adolescence in Turkey are similar to reported rates in the Western countries. In the ADHD group, 75.6 % still has impairing ADHD symptoms and 46.6 % has comorbid psychiatric disorders. The main difference is anxiety disorders being the most common comorbid disorders (37.8 %) in Turkish ADHD youth. These findings stress the high comorbidity associated with ADHD and support the importance of assessment and treatment for ADHD and comorbidities during adolescence.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the medication use in children and adolescents with mental retardation (MR) retrospectively in a cross-sectional study. Method: Between June and December 2013, records of the children and adolescents admitted by our policlinic were retrospectively evaluated and those who had MR diagnosis were analyzed. Results: Male sex was found as statistically related to the presence of psychiatric comorbidity and the pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). At least one medical diagnosis accompanying with MR was found in 49.7% (n=781) of all patients. 79.6% (n=1252) of all patients did not use any medication, 16.7% (n=262) of all sample were using one medication agent, 3.5% (n=55) of patients were using combined pharmacotherapy. The predictors of psychotropic medication were the following: the presence of comorbid any of psychiatric disorders, having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), having conduct disorders (CD) and having anxiety disorders. Conclusions and Recommendations: This study has a descriptive nature of the children with MR admitted to the child psychiatry department. It was noticed that psychotropic agent use is preferable if there is a comorbid situation in mental retardation. There is a need for further studies with prospectively planned, multi-central with larger sampling in our country to draw up a way of health policies related to the children with MR.

Objective: Temperament and character is central to social behavioral development. It has been shown that various temperament and character dimensions are related with developmental pathologies in children and adolescents. It has been suggested that there is a complex and multi-mensional interaction between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and temperament and character. In this study it was aimed to investigate the relationship of the ADHD, a developmental psychopathology, with temperament and character properties in adolescence and young adulthood in a Turkish sample. Methods: The study included 37 adolescents and young adults of 17-22 years of age with the diagnosis of ADHD. The control group consisted of healthy individuals with no psychiatric disorder. The patients were assessed with Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) following the diagnosis-oriented interview. Results: ADHD group had significantly higher points for novelty seeking, and significantly lower points for persistence, self-directedness, cooperativeness, and self-transcendence. Harm avoidance points were not significantly different except for points for fear of uncertainty. Conclusion: The results of this study in the direction of a higher novelty seeking detected in individuals with ADHD supports the literature on adults. Lower persistence, self-directedness, and cooperativeness properties, on the other hand, are consistent with previous literature on children and adolescents. The results of this study support the notion that certain temperament and character properties interact with ADHD
