Organising primary prevention programs for child abuse and neglect is among the key responsibilities of the Turkish Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (TSPCAN). TSPCAN conducted a project which provided university students who in the future may encounter individuals with child abuse experiences with guidance with regards to a child abuse prevention program. The aim of this study was to qualitatively evaluate the influences of TSPCAN's project on young professionals who were the facilitators of this program as undergraduate students in medical, health and social science degrees. Twenty participants were recruited through a purposeful and convenient sampling method. The data were first collected with a structured questionnaire. Then, two focus groups were conducted with nine (45%) of these participants. Thematic analysis was utilised for both data collection waves. Findings were organised under three themes: (i) aims for participation in the project; (ii) acquired awareness in the project; and (iii) contributions of the project in their professional lives. Findings highlight the importance of including university students in child abuse prevention programs to provide the knowledge and awareness they need as future professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and its association with perinatal risk factors in preterm children at the age of 5. Material and Method: The cohort was derived from children born between 30-36 weeks of gestation and hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Children who have survived beyond age 5, without a history of congenital anomaly, neurological or chronic disease and mental motor retardation. 106 children who met the inclusion criteria were evaluated when they were five years old. The Perinatal Risk Factors Form was completed for each child. All children and their parents were interviewed using the schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia for school aged children- present and lifetime version for psychiatric diagnosis. Approval from the ethics committee (HEK 08/3-4) and written assent from all parents were obtained. Results: 20.8% of the children were diagnosed as ADHD. Diagnosis of ADHD was more common in children who had smaller gestational age and lower birth weight, who developed respiratory distress syndrome, received surfactant therapy and mechanical ventilation treatment and had longer hospitalization period. ADHD was less prevalent among children from high socioeconomic status families. Among the perinatal factors assessed, gestational age was found to be the main predictor for ADHD. Conclusions: In the long term follow up of premature children, with regard to perinatal risk factors, psychopathologies and especially ADHD should be taken into account for early recognition and intervention. MUNCHAUSEN syndrome ,CONTEXT effects (Psychology) ,PSYCHOSES ,SYMPTOMS ,PERSONALITY disorders ,PERSUASION (Psychology) ,EMOTIONS ,SENSORY perception - Abstract
The occurrence of similar psychotic symptoms in two or more people is called shared paranoid disorder. In this disease, the person who exhibits psychotic symptoms first is the "primary patient". The symptoms are contracted by the other people through persuasion. This disorder is seen among people who share the same house or are emotionally bound. In some cases, shared paranoid disorder may include other diagnoses, such as Munchausen Syndrome. This report discusses the case of a six-year-old, sexually abused boy who, when admitted to the hospital at the age of 10 claimed to have been repeatedly sexually harassed by several different people. His family's frequent changes in hospitals, negative perceptions of and accusations against medical staff, and improper methods of responding to harassment led clinicians to a diagnosis of Munchausen by proxy syndrome. In addition, both parents believed the abuse story, suggesting a potential diagnosis of shared psychotic disorder. In the literature, Munchausen by proxy has rarely been reported with symptoms of sexual abuse. The psychotic symptoms were shared by the family, complicating the case. This report emphasizes that psychodynamic evaluations of Munchausen by proxy and shared psychotic disorder may be helpful in understanding underly ing factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of child abuse and neglect (CAN) cases. Subjects were 102 cases that were clinically assessed by the multidisciplinary hospital team. Early and late childhood cases (according to the age at first abuse) were compared by means of characteristics of abuse. Among the 102 subjects, 64 were female and 38 were male (mean age: 8.68 years): Being, abused by someone within the family was found to be significantly higher in preschool children compared to children in late childhood. 27.5% (n: 28) of the cases concomitantly had low socioeconomic and educational level and high parental psychological problems and 64.8% had psychiatric problems. A limited number of studies have compared characteristics of early and late childhood abuse considering the age of onset of maltreatment. Consistent with the literature, our study showed that early age of onset of maltreatment is a poor prognostic factor in many ways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aims of this study were to determine the rate of psychopathology in the children of parents with bipolar disorder and to examine the relationship between the psychopathology in these children and the characteristics of bipolar disorder in their parents. Method: The study included 36 children of 28 bipolar I parents and 33 children of 28 control parents, all between the ages of 6 and 17 years. The bipolar parents and all of the children were screened using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Lifetime Version (SADS-L) and the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children, Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL), respectively. The spouses of bipolar parents completed the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and the children completed the Parenting Style Scale (PSS). Results: The rate of psychopathology was higher in the children of bipolar parents than in those of the control parents. Affective disorders and disruptive behavior disorders were observed with significantly greater frequency in the children of the bipolar parents. Attitudes in study group parents were related to the presence of psychopathology in their children. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that children of bipolar parents have an increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders, especially affective disorders and disruptive behavior disorders. The children of bipolar patients need to be screened for psychiatric symptoms and referred for psychiatric assistance when necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Child abuse and neglect should be a main topic in trainings of students who have a possibility to encounter a neglected and abused child in their future professional lives. Use of psychodrama in training such an important and sensitive subject is a novel approach. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the effects of psychodrama method for the training about child abuse and neglect given to university students. Method: In this training, a group of 11 students attended the 16 week course, once a week for 2,5 hours. The effects of this training were evaluated by quantitative and qualitative methods. Results: For quantitative analysis pre and post training knowledge tests revealed scores of 33 and 39 respectively. The difference was statistically significant (p<0.05). Awareness test scores for pre and post training evaluation were 85 and 89 respectively. Although there was an increase after training this increase was not statistically significant (p=0.65). Focus group interview which was performed for qualitative analysis revealed that the training increased the participants' awareness and empathy, made them more sensitive for the news about children and child abuse, taught them not to judge people, encouraged them for their future career and made them understand the importance of multidisciplinary approach. Discussion: These perceived benefits indicate that psychodrama method may be used to teach the topic of child abuse and neglect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IV ÖZET Akdemir, D., Bipolar Duygudurum Bozukluğu Olan Ana Babaların Çocuklarında Psikopatoloji, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Çocuk Ruh Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Tezi. Ankara, 2004. ABSTRACT Akdemir, D., Psychopathology In Children Of Bipolar Parents, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Thesis in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Ankara, 2004. In this research, children with bipolar I disorder either in their fathers or mothers were compared with a control group of children without any psychiatric disorder in their parents in respect to presence and kind of any psychopathology and in the study group several clinical variables that are believed to have role in development of these psychopathologies were examined. In the study group 36 children (aged between 6 and 17) of 17 mothers and 11 fathers with bipolar I disorder were evaluated. Thirty -three children (aged between 6 and 17) of parents without any psychiatric disease were included in the control group. Clinical interview and SADS (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia) were applied to the diseased parent in the study and both parents in the control groups. Diagnosis of psychopathology in children and adolescents were scanned with K- SADS (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Aged Children). All children and adolescents filled out Parent Attitude Scale and their parents filled out Hacettepe Attention Deficit and Behavior Evaluation Scale and Hacettepe Psychological Adaptation Scale. As a result of these evaluations, more frequent psychopathologies and multiple psychiatric diagnoses were found in children of parents with bipolar I disorder in respect to controls. Affective disorders and destructive behavior disorders were the most common diagnoses in these children. In the study group of children, parents' attitude was found to be effective in psychopathology development, where no connection between other clinical variables and presence of psychopathology was detected. The results of this study suggests that in children of parents with bipolar disorder, affective disorders and destructive behavior disorders might be the precursors of a possible future bipolar disorder. Biological and psychosocial risk factors affecting psychopathology development in these children should be studied prospectively in larger groups in order to have more illuminating results. Keywords: Bipolar affective disorder in parents, psychopathology in children. 63

The aim of this study was to present child abuse and neglect (CAN) cases of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department of Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine. The charts of all the patients seen at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic between 2000 and 2004 were screened regarding the presence of CAN. The mean age of the children was 10.9 years. The offender was generally an extra-familial acquaintance (40.7%). The most common type of abuse was sexual (77.8%) and the most common associated types of abuse were physical and sexual (7.4%). Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was observed as the most common psychiatric diagnosis (22.2%). Abuse types in relation to age and gender of abused child, risk factors and associated psychopathologies are discussed. Issues related to legislative process and ecology of the abuse experience are mentioned as restrictions for the prevention and treatment of CAN.
