The distribution of bases spacing in human genome was investigated. An analysis of the frequency of occurrence in the human genome of different sequence lengths flanked by one type of nucleotide was carried out showing that the distribution has no self-similar (fractal) structure. The results nevertheless revealed several characteristic features: (i) the distribution for short-range spacing is quite similar to the purely stochastic sequences; (ii) the distribution for long-range spacing essentially deviates from the random sequence distribution, showing strong long-range correlations; (iii) the differences between (A, T) and (C, G) bases are quite significant; (iv) the spacing distribution displays tiny oscillations., Comment: LaTeX, 9 figures

The differential cross sections for low-energy muonic hydrogen atom scattering in liquid hydrogenic targets have been calculated in the incoherent approximation using the Van Hove response function. A simple model of liquids and the available experimental parameters have been employed for a description of the diffusive and vibrational modes in these targets. At collision energies below about 10 meV, the obtained cross sections are very different from the analogous cross sections for scattering in hydrogenic gases., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

We derive isospectral flows of the mass density in the string boundary value problem corresponding to general boundary conditions. In particular, we show that certain class of rational flows produces in a suitable limit all flows generated by polynomials in negative powers of the spectral parameter. We illustrate the theory with concrete examples of isospectral flows of discrete mass densities which we prove to be Hamiltonian and for which we provide explicit solutions of equations of motion in terms of Stieltjes continued fractions and Hankel determinants., Comment: 15 pages, uses fourier.sty

In this model study of the commodity market, we present some evidence of competition of commodities for the status of money in the regime of parameters, where emergence of money is possible. An agent-based computational economical toy model for the emergence of money from the initial barter trading, inspired by Menger's postulate that money can spontaneously emerge in a commodity exchange economy, is extensively studied. The model considered, while manageable, is significantly complex, however. It is already able to reveal phenomena that can be interpreted as emergence and collapse of money as well as the related competition effects. In particular, it is shown that - as an extra emerging effect - the money lifetimes near the critical threshold value develop multiscaling, which allow one to set parallels to critical phenomena and, thus, to the real financial markets., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

We analyze structure of the world foreign currency exchange (FX) market viewed as a network of interacting currencies. We analyze daily time series of FX data for a set of 63 currencies, including gold, silver and platinum. We group together all the exchange rates with a common base currency and study each group separately. By applying the methods of filtered correlation matrix we identify clusters of closely related currencies. The clusters are formed typically according to the economical and geographical factors. We also study topology of weighted minimal spanning trees for different network representations (i.e., for different base currencies) and find that in a majority of representations the network has a hierarchical scale-free structure. In addition, we analyze the temporal evolution of the network and detect that its structure is not stable over time. A medium-term trend can be identified which affects the USD node by decreasing its centrality. Our analysis shows also an increasing role of euro in the world's currency market.

Fractal exponents ($d$) for human cranial sutures are calculated using the box counting method. The results were found around $d = 1.5$ (within the range $1.3\div 1.7$), supporting the random walk model for the suture formation process. However, the calculated dispersion above the estimated accuracy suggests that other mechanisms are also present. Similar numbers were obtained for both the sagittal and coronal sutures, with the coronal sutures displaying a better scaling. We show that for sets with the Hausdorff--Besicovitch dimension equal zero the box counting algorithm commonly used to calculate Renyi exponents ($d_q$) can exhibit perfect scaling suggesting non zero $d_q$'s. Properties of these pathological sets ({\it pseudofractals}) are investigated. Numerical, as well as analytical estimates for $d_q$'s are obtained. A simple indicator is given to distinguish pseudofractals and fractals in practical applications of the box counting method. We construct a class of representations of the Heisenberg algebra in terms of the complex shift operators subject to the proper continuous limit imposed by the correspondence principle. We find a suitable Hilbert space formulation of our construction for two types of shifts: (1) real shifts, (2) purely imaginary shifts. The representations involving imaginary shifts are free of spectrum doubling. We determine the corresponding coordinate and momentum operators satisfying the canonical commutation relations. The fractal properties of the energy spectra of quantum systems are discussed in connection with the paper by S\'aiz and Mart\'inez [Phys. Rev. E 54, 2431 (1996)]. It is shown that for discrete energy levels the Hausdorff--Basicovitch dimension is zero and differs from the Renyi scaling exponents computed by the standard box counting algorithm. The Renyi exponents for the inverse power series data sets (x_n = 1/n^a, n=1,2,...) are computed analytically and they are shown to be d_0 = 1/(1+a) and, as a consequence, d_0 = 1/3 for the Balmer formula., Comment: 2 pages, LaTeX+RevTeX 3.1

We suggest in this Letter that the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy accounts for the degrees of freedom which are excited at low temperatures only and hence it leads to the negative specific heat. Taking into account the physical degrees of freedom which are excited at high temperatures, the existence of which we postulate, we compute the total specific heat of the quantum black hole that appears to be positive. This is done in analogy to the Planck's treatment of the black body radiation problem. Other thermodynamic functions are computed as well. Our results and the success of the thermodynamic description of the quantum black hole suggest an underlying atomic (discrete) structure of gravitation. Multifractal scaling analysis of nuclear giant resonance transition probability distributions is performed within the approximation which takes into account the one-particle-one-hole (1p-1h) and 2p-2h states. A new measure to determine the fractal dimensions of the spectra is introduced. It is found that chaotic dynamics governing the decay leads to non-trivial multifractal scaling properties. Different finite difference replacements for the derivative are analyzed in the context of the Heisenberg commutation relation. The type of the finite difference operator is shown to be tied to whether one can naturally consider $P$ and $X$ to be self-adjoint and skew self-adjoint or whether they have to be viewed as creation and annihilation operators. The first class, generalizing the central difference scheme, is shown to give unitary equivalent representations.
