Massive stars lead the ionization and mechanical feedback within young star-forming regions. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is an ideal galaxy for studying individual massive stars and quantifying their feedback contribution to the environment. We analyze eight exemplary targets in LMC N11 B from the Hubble UV Legacy Library of Young Stars as Essential Standards (ULLYSES) program, using novel spectra from HST (COS and STIS) in the UV, and from VLT (X-shooter) in the optical. We model the spectra of early to late O-type stars by using state-of-the-art PoWR atmosphere models. We determine the stellar and wind parameters (e.g., $T_\star$, $\log g$, $L_{\star}$, $\dot{M}$, $v_\infty$) of the analyzed objects, chemical abundances (C, N, O), ionizing and mechanical feedback ($Q_\mathrm{H}$, $Q_\mathrm{He{\small{I}}}$, $Q_\mathrm{He{\small{II}}}$, $L_\mathrm{mec}$) and X-rays. We report ages of $2-4.5$ Myr and masses of $30-60$ $M_\odot$ for the analyzed stars in N11 B, consistent with a scenario of sequential star formation. We note that the observed wind-momentum luminosity relation is consistent with theoretical predictions. We detect nitrogen enrichment in most of the stars, up to a factor of seven. However, we do not find a correlation between nitrogen enrichment and projected rotational velocity. Finally, based on their spectral type, we estimate the total ionizing photons injected from the O-type stars in N11 B into its environment. We report $\log$ ($\sum$ $Q_\mathrm{H}$)$=50.5$ ph s$^{-1}$, $\log$ ($\sum$ $Q_\mathrm{He{\small{I}}}$)$=49.6$ ph s$^{-1}$ and $\log$ ($\sum$ $Q_\mathrm{He{\small{II}}}$)$=44.4$ ph s$^{-1}$, consistent with the total ionizing budget in N11., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are high-mass X-ray binaries with an X-ray luminosity above $10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. These ULXs can be powered by black holes that are more massive than $20M_\odot$, accreting in a standard regime, or lighter compact objects accreting supercritically. There are only a few ULXs with known optical or UV counterparts, and their nature is debated. Determining whether optical/UV radiation is produced by the donor star or by the accretion disc is crucial for understanding ULX physics and testing massive binary evolution. We conduct, for the first time, a fully consistent multi-wavelength spectral analysis of a ULX and its circumstellar nebula. We aim to establish the donor star type and test the presence of strong disc winds in the prototypical ULX Holmberg II X-1 (Ho II X-1). We intent to obtain a realistic spectral energy distribution of the ionising source, which is needed for robust nebula analysis. We acquired new UV spectra of Ho II X-1 with the HST and complemented them with archival optical and X-ray data. We explored the spectral energy distribution of the source and analysed the spectra using the stellar atmosphere code PoWR and the photoionisation code Cloudy. Our analysis of the X-ray, UV, and optical spectra of Ho II X-1 and its nebula consistently explains the observations. We do not find traces of disc wind signatures in the UV and the optical, rejecting previous claims of the ULX being a supercritical accretor. The optical/UV counterpart of HoII X-1 is explained by a B-type supergiant donor star. Thus, the observations are fully compatible with Ho II X-1 being a close binary consisting of an $\gtrsim 66\,M_\odot$ black hole accreting matter from an $\simeq 22 M_\odot$ B-supergiant companion. Context. B supergiants (BSGs) represent an important connection between the main sequence and more extreme evolutionary stages of massive stars. Additionally, lying toward the cool end of the hot star regime, determining their wind properties is crucial to constrain the evolution and feedback of massive stars as, for instance, they might manifest the bi-stability jump phenomenon. Aims. We undertake a detailed analysis of a representative sample of 18 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) BSGs within the ULLYSES and XShootU datasets. Our UV and optical analysis spans BSGs from B0 to B8 - covering the bi-stability jump region. We aim to evaluate their evolutionary status and verify what their wind properties say about the bi-stability jump in a low-metallicity environment. Methods. We used the CMFGEN to model the spectra and photometry (from UV to infrared) of our sample. We compare our results with different evolutionary models, with previous determinations in the literature of OB stars, and with diverging mass-loss recipes at the bi-stability jump. Additionally, we provide the first BSG models in the SMC including X-rays. Results. (i) Within a single-stellar evolution framework, the evolutionary status of early BSGs seem less clear than that of late BSGs, which agree with H-shell burning models. (ii) UV analysis shows evidence that BSGs contain X-rays in their atmospheres, for which we provide constraints. In general, we find higher X-ray luminosity (close to the standard log(L_X/L) ~ -7) for early BSGs. For cooler BSGs, lower values are preferred, log(L_X/L) ~ -8.5. (iii) The obtained mass-loss rates suggest neither a jump nor a monotonic decrease with temperature. Instead, a rather constant trend is observed, which is at odds with the increase found for Galactic BSGs. CONTEXT: The spectral analysis of hot, massive stars is a fundamental astrophysical method to obtain their intrinsic properties and their feedback. Quantitative spectroscopy for hot, massive stars requires detailed numerical modeling of the atmosphere and an iterative treatment to obtain the best solution within a given framework. AIMS: We present an overview of different techniques for the quantitative spectroscopy of hot stars employed within the X-Shooting ULLYSES collaboration, from grid-based approaches to tailored fits. By performing a blind test, we gain an overview about the similarities and differences of the resulting parameters. Our study aims to provide an overview of the parameter spread caused by different approaches. METHODS: For three different stars from the sample (SMC O5 star AzV 377, LMC O7 star Sk -69 50, and LMC O9 star Sk -66 171), we employ different atmosphere codes (CMFGEN, Fastwind, PoWR) and strategies to determine their best-fitting model. For our analyses, UV and optical spectra are used to derive the properties with some methods relying purely on optical data for comparison. To determine the overall spectral energy distribution, we further employ additional photometry from the literature. RESULTS: Effective temperatures for each of three sample stars agree within 3 kK while the differences in log g can be up to 0.2 dex. Luminosity differences of up to 0.1 dex result from different reddening assumptions, which seem to be larger for the methods employing a genetic algorithm. All sample stars are nitrogen-enriched. CONCLUSIONS: We find a reasonable agreement between the different methods. Tailored fitting tends to be able to minimize discrepancies obtained with more course or automatized treatments. UV spectral data is essential for the determination of realistic wind parameters. We present the analysis of archival Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of 179 HII regions in the star-forming double-ring collisional galaxy AM 0644-741 at 98.6 Mpc. We determined ionic abundances of He, N, O and Fe using the direct method for the brightest H II region (ID 39); we report $\log\rm{(\frac{N}{O})}=-1.3\pm0.2$ and $12+\log\rm{(\frac{O}{H})}=8.9\pm0.2$. We also find the so-called `blue-bump', broad He II $\lambda4686$, in the spectrum of this knot of massive star-formation; its luminosity being consistent with the presence of $\sim430$ Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars of the Nitrogen late-type. We determined the O abundances for 137 HII regions using the strong-line method; we report a median value of $12+\log\rm{(\frac{O}{H})}=8.5\pm0.8$. The location of three objects, including the WR complex, coincide with that of an Ultra Luminous X-ray source. Nebular He II is not detected in any H II region. We investigate the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed spectral lines using appropriate diagnostic diagrams and ionization models. We find that the H II regions are being photoionized by star clusters with ages $\sim2.5-20$ Myr and ionization potential $-3.5<$$\log\langle U\rangle$$<-3.0$. We here present the results of an analysis of the optical spectroscopy of 42 globular cluster (GC) candidates in the nearby spiral galaxy M81 (3.61~Mpc). The spectra were obtained using the long-slit and MOS modes of the OSIRIS instrument at the 10.4~m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) at a spectral resolution of $\sim$1000. We used the classical H$\beta$ vs [MgFe]$'$ index diagram to separate genuine old GCs from clusters younger than 3 Gyr. Of the 30 spectra with continuum signal-to-noise ratio $>10$, we confirm 17 objects to be classical GCs (age $>10$~Gyr, $-1.4<$[Fe/H]$<-$0.4), with the remaining 13 being intermediate-age clusters (1-7.5~Gyr). We combined age and metallicity data of other nearby spiral galaxies ($\lesssim18$~Mpc) obtained using similar methodology like the one we have used here to understand the origin of GCs in spiral galaxies in the cosmological context. We find that the metal-poor ([Fe/H]<$-$1) GCs continued to form up to 6~Gyr after the first GCs were formed, with all younger systems (age $<8$~Gyr) being metal-rich., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 8 tables; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results obtained by analysing new Astrosat/UVIT far ultraviolet (FUV) image of the collisional-ring galaxy Cartwheel. The FUV emission is principally associated with the star-forming outer ring, with no UV detection from the nucleus and inner ring. A few sources are detected in the region between the inner and the outer rings, all of which lie along the spokes. The FUV fluxes from the detected sources are combined with aperture-matched multi-band photometric data from archival images to explore the post-collision star formation history of the Cartwheel. The data were corrected for extinction using Av derived from the Balmer decrement ratios and commonly used extinction curves. We find that the ring regions contain stellar populations of wide range of ages, with the bulk of the FUV emission coming from non-ionizing stars, formed over the last 20 to 150 Myr, that are ~25 times more massive than the ionizing populations. On the other hand, regions belonging to the spokes have negligible current star formation, with the age of the dominant older population systematically increasing as its distance from the outer ring increases. The presence of populations of a wide range of ages in the ring suggests that the stars formed in the wave in the past were dragged along it to the current position of the ring. We derive an average steady star formation rate, SFR=5 Msun/yr, over the past 150 Myr, with an increase to ~18 Msun/yr in the recent 10 Myr., Comment: 16 pages, to appear in MNRAS

(Photo)electrocatalysts capture sunlight and use it to drive chemical reactions such as water splitting to produce H2. A major factor limiting photocatalyst development is their large heterogeneity which spatially modulates reactivity and precludes establishing robust structure-function relationships. To make such links requires simultaneously probing of the electrochemical environment at microscopic length scales (nm to um) and broad timescales (ns to s). Here, we address this challenge by developing and applying in-situ steady-state and transient optical microscopies to directly map and correlate local electrochemical activity with hole lifetimes, oxygen vacancy concentration and the photoelectrodes crystal structure. Using this combined approach alongside spatially resolved X-Ray absorption measurements, we study microstructural and point defects in prototypical hematite (Fe2O3) photoanodes. We demonstrate that regions of Fe2O3, adjacent to microstructural cracks have a better photoelectrochemical response and reduced back electron recombination due to an optimal oxide vacancy concentration, with the film thickness and carbon impurities also dramatically influencing activity in a complex manner. Our work highlights the importance of microscopic mapping to understand activity and the impact of defects in even, seemingly, homogeneous solid-state metal oxide photoelectrodes.

Observations of individual massive stars, super-luminous supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and gravitational-wave events involving spectacular black-hole mergers, indicate that the low-metallicity Universe is fundamentally different from our own Galaxy. Many transient phenomena will remain enigmatic until we achieve a firm understanding of the physics and evolution of massive stars at low metallicity (Z). The Hubble Space Telescope has devoted 500 orbits to observe 250 massive stars at low Z in the ultraviolet (UV) with the COS and STIS spectrographs under the ULLYSES program. The complementary ``X-Shooting ULLYSES'' (XShootU) project provides enhanced legacy value with high-quality optical and near-infrared spectra obtained with the wide-wavelength coverage X-shooter spectrograph at ESO's Very Large Telescope. We present an overview of the XShootU project, showing that combining ULLYSES UV and XShootU optical spectra is critical for the uniform determination of stellar parameters such as effective temperature, surface gravity, luminosity, and abundances, as well as wind properties such as mass-loss rates in function of Z. As uncertainties in stellar and wind parameters percolate into many adjacent areas of Astrophysics, the data and modelling of the XShootU project is expected to be a game-changer for our physical understanding of massive stars at low Z. Major players in the global aerospace industry are shifting their focus toward achieving net carbon-neutral operations by 2050. A considerable portion of the overall carbon emission reduction is expected to come from new aircraft technologies, such as flight path optimization. In pursuing these sustainability objectives, we delve into the capacity of quantum computing to tackle computational challenges associated with flight path optimization, an essential operation within the aerospace engineering domain with important ecological and economic considerations. In recent years, the quantum computing field has made significant strides, paving the way for improved performance over classical algorithms. In order to effectively apply quantum algorithms in real-world scenarios, it is crucial to thoroughly examine and tackle the intrinsic overheads and constraints that exist in the present implementations of these algorithms. Our study delves into the application of quantum computers in flight path optimization problems and introduces a customizable modular framework designed to accommodate specific simulation requirements. We examine the running time of a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm across various quantum architectures and their simulations on CPUs and GPUs. A temporal comparison between the conventional classical algorithm and its quantum-improved counterpart indicates that achieving the theoretical speedup in practice may necessitate further innovation. The origin of the observed population of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in low-metallicity (low-Z) galaxies, such as the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), is not yet understood. Standard, single-star evolutionary models predict that WR stars should stem from very massive O-type star progenitors, but these are very rare. On the other hand, binary evolutionary models predict that WR stars could originate from primary stars in close binaries. We conduct an analysis of the massive O star, AzV 14, to spectroscopically determine its fundamental and stellar wind parameters, which are then used to investigate evolutionary paths from the O-type to the WR stage with stellar evolutionary models. Multi-epoch UV and optical spectra of AzV 14 are analyzed using the non-LTE stellar atmosphere code PoWR. An optical TESS light curve was extracted and analyzed using the PHOEBE code. The obtained parameters are put into an evolutionary context, using the MESA code. AzV 14 is a close binary system consisting of two similar main sequence stars with masses of 32 Msol. Both stars have weak stellar winds with mass-loss rates of log $\dot{M}$ = -7.7. Binary evolutionary models can explain the empirically derived stellar and orbital parameters. The model predicts that the primary will evolve into a WR star with T = 100 kK, while the secondary, which will accrete significant amounts of mass during the first mass transfer phase, will become a cooler WR star with T = 50 kK and are predicted to have compared to other WR stars increased oxygen abundances. This model prediction is supported by a spectroscopic analysis of a WR star in the SMC. We hypothesize that the populations of WR stars in low-Z galaxies may have bimodal temperature distributions. Hotter WR stars might originate from primary stars, while cooler WR stars are the evolutionary descendants of the secondary stars if they accreted a significant amount of mass., Comment: 21 pages (13 main body + 8 appendix), 16 figures, 9 tables

We here study the multi-band properties of a kiloparsec-size superbubble in the late-type spiral galaxy NGC628. The superbubble is the largest of many holes seen in the early release images using JWST/MIRI filters that trace the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions. The superbubble is located in the interarm region ~3 kpc from the galactic center in the south-east direction. The shell surrounding the superbubble is detected in HI, CO, and Halpha with an expansion velocity of 12 km/s, and contains as much as 2x10^7 Msun of mass in gas that is mostly in molecular form. We find a clear excess of blue, bright stars inside the bubble as compared to the surrounding disk on the HST/ACS images. These excess blue, bright stars are part of a stellar population of 10^5 Msun mass that is formed over the last 50 Myr in different star formation episodes, as determined from an analysis of color-magnitude diagrams using a Bayesian technique. The mechanical power injected by the massive stars of these populations is sufficient to provide the energy necessary for the expansion of the shell gas. Slow and steady, rather than violent, injection of energy is probably the reason for the maintenance of the shell structure over the kiloparsec scale. The expanding shell is currently the site for triggered star formation as inferred from the JWST 21 micron (F2100W filter) and the Halpha images., Comment: 18 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We here report the detection of the nebular HeII4686 line in 32 HII regions in the metal-poor collisional ring galaxy Cartwheel using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) dataset. The measured I(HeII4686)/I(Hbeta) ratio varies from 0.004 to 0.07, with a mean value of 0.010+/-0.003. Ten of these 32 HII regions are coincident with the location of an Ultra Luminous X-ray (ULX) source. We used the flux ratios of important diagnostic lines and results of photoionization by Simple Stellar Populations (SSPs) to investigate the likely physical mechanisms responsible for the ionization of He+. We find that the majority of the regions (27) are consistent with photoionization by star clusters in their Wolf-Rayet (WR) phase with initial ionization parameter -3.5

Objective: To conduct a proof-of-concept study of the detection of two synthetic models of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) using polarimetric imaging. Methods: Two SARS-CoV-2 models were prepared as engineered lentiviruses pseudotyped with the G protein of the vesicular stomatitis virus, and with the characteristic Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. Samples were preparations in two biofluids (saline solution and artificial saliva), in four concentrations, and deposited as 5-{\mu}L droplets on a supporting plate. The angles of maximal degree of linear polarization (DLP) of light diffusely scattered from dry residues were determined using Mueller polarimetry of 87 samples at 405 nm and 514 nm. A polarimetric camera was used for simultaneous imaging of several samples under 380-420 nm illumination at angles similar to those of maximal DLP. A per-pixel image analysis included quantification and combination of polarization feature descriptors in other 475 samples. Results: The angles (from sample surface) of maximal DLP were 3 degrees for 405 nm and 6 degrees for 514 nm. Similar viral particles that differ only in the characteristic spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2, their corresponding negative controls, fluids, and the sample holder were discerned from polarimetric image analysis at 10-degree and 15-degree configurations. Conclusion: Polarimetric imaging in the visible spectrum has the potential for non-contact, reagent-free detection of viruses in multiple dry fluid residues simultaneously. Further analysis including real SARS-CoV-2 in human samples -- particularly, fresh saliva -- are required. Significance: Polarimetric imaging under visible light could contribute to fast, cost-effective screening of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens.

Today, there exists a wide variety of algorithms dedicated to high-contrast imaging, especially for the detection and characterisation of exoplanet signals. These algorithms are tailored to address the very high contrast between the exoplanet signal(s), which can be more than two orders of magnitude fainter than the bright starlight residuals in coronagraphic images. The starlight residuals are inhomogeneously distributed and follow various timescales that depend on the observing conditions and on the target star brightness. Disentangling the exoplanet signals within the starlight residuals is therefore challenging, and new post-processing algorithms are striving to achieve more accurate astrophysical results. The Exoplanet Imaging Data Challenge is a community-wide effort to develop, compare and evaluate algorithms using a set of benchmark high-contrast imaging datasets. After a first phase ran in 2020 and focused on the detection capabilities of existing algorithms, the focus of this ongoing second phase is to compare the characterisation capabilities of state-of-the-art techniques. The characterisation of planetary companions is two-fold: the astrometry (estimated position with respect to the host star) and spectrophotometry (estimated contrast with respect to the host star, as a function of wavelength). We here present the results from a detailed analysis of nebular abundances of commonly observed ions in the collisional ring galaxy Cartwheel using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) dataset. The analysis includes 221 HII regions in the star-forming ring, in addition to 40 relatively fainter H$\alpha$ emitting regions in the spokes, disk and the inner ring. The ionic abundances of He, N, O and Fe are obtained using the direct method (DM) for 9, 20, 20, and 17 ring HII regions, respectively, where the S$^{++}$ temperature-sensitive line is detected. For the rest of the regions, including all the nebulae between the inner and the outer ring, we obtained O abundances using the strong-line method (SLM). The ring regions have a median $12+\log\rm{\frac{O}{H}}$=8.19$\pm$0.15, $\log\rm{\frac{N}{O}}=-$1.57$\pm$0.09 and $\log\rm{\frac{Fe}{O}}=-$2.24$\pm$0.09 using the DM. Within the range of O abundances seen in the Cartwheel, the N/O and Fe/O values decrease proportionately with increasing O, suggesting local enrichment of O without corresponding enrichment of primary N and Fe. The O abundances of the disk HII regions obtained using the SLM show a well-defined radial gradient. The mean O abundance of the ring HII regions is lower by $\sim$0.1 dex as compared to the extrapolation of the radial gradient. The observed trends suggest the preservation of the pre-collisional abundance gradient, displacement of most of the processed elements to the ring, as predicted by the recent simulation by Renaud et al. (2018), and post-collisional infall of metal-poor gas in the ring., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the analysis of Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations of the planetary nebula (PN) IC 4406. MUSE images in key emission lines are used to unveil the presence of at least 5 ring-like structures North and South of the main nebula of IC 4406. MUSE spectra are extracted from the rings to unambiguously assess for the first time in a PN their physical conditions, electron density (ne) and temperature (Te). The rings are found to have similar Te than the rim of the main nebula, but smaller ne. Ratios between different ionic species suggest that the rings of IC 4406 have a lower ionization state than the main cavity, in contrast to what was suggested for the rings in NGC6543, the Cat's Eye Nebula., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. After performing the morpho-kinematic analysis of the planetary nebula (PN) PC 22, we now present its nebular and stellar analysis. The plasma investigation relies on the novel use of a Monte Carlo analysis associated to the PyNeb code for the uncertainty propagation. The innermost region of the nebula shows electronic temperatures $T_{\rm e}$ $\approx$ 10,800~K using [NII] and $\approx$ 13,000 K using [OIII] and electronic densities $n_{\rm e}$ $\approx$ 600~cm$^{-3}$. We also used for the first time a Machine Learning Algorithm to calculate Ionisation Correction Factors (ICFs) specifically adapted to PC 22. This has allowed us to have pioneer ICFs for (S$^{+}$ + S$^{++}$)/O$^{++}$, Cl$^{++}$/O$^{++}$, and Ar$^{3+}$+Ar$^{4+}$, as well as a possible new determination for the total abundance of neon. The study of the stellar spectrum revealed the presence of broad emission lines consistent with a Wolf-Rayet-type [WR] classification and more precisely a [WO1]-subtype based on different qualitative and quantitative criteria. This classification is also coherent with the high stellar temperature derived from the reproduction of the ionization state of the gas with the Mexican Million Models database (3MdB) and the best fit model obtained with the NLTE model atmosphere code PoWR. We present a multi-wavelength characterisation of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6905 and its [Wolf-Rayet]-type ([WR]) central star (CSPN) HD 193949. Our Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) Alhambra Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (ALFOSC) spectra and images unveil in unprecedented detail the high-ionization structure of NGC 6905. The high-quality spectra of HD 193949 allowed us to detect more than 20 WR features including the characteristic O-bump, blue bump and red bump, which suggests a spectral type no later than a [WO2]-subtype. Moreover we detect the Ne VII and Ne VIII broad emission lines, rendering HD 193949 yet another CSPN with $T_\mathrm{eff}\lesssim150$ kK exhibiting such stellar emission lines. We studied the physical properties ($T_\mathrm{e}$ and $n_\mathrm{e}$) and chemical abundances of different regions within NGC 6905 including its low-ionization clumps; abundances are found to be homogeneous. We used the PoWR stellar atmosphere code to model the spectrum of HD 193949, which is afterwards used in a photoionization model performed with Cloudy that reproduces the nebular and dust properties for a total mass in the 0.31-0.47 M$_{\odot}$ range and a mass of C-rich dust of $\sim$2 $\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$. Adopting a current stellar mass of 0.6 M$_{\odot}$, our model suggests an initial mass $\sim$1 M$_\odot$ for HD 193949, consistent with the observations., Comment: To appear in MNRAS; 17 pages, 9 figures, 10 tables

We present a comprehensive analysis of the compact planetary nebula M2-31 investigating its spectral properties, spatio-kinematical structure and chemical composition using GTC MEGARA integral field spectroscopic observations and NOT ALFOSC medium-resolution spectra and narrow-band images. The GTC MEGARA high-dispersion observations have remarkable tomographic capabilities, producing an unprecedented view of the morphology and kinematics of M2-31 that discloses a fast spectroscopic bipolar outflow along position angles 50$^\circ$ and 230$^\circ$, an extended shell and a toroidal structure or waist surrounding the central star perpendicularly aligned with the fast outflows. These observations also show that the C II emission is confined in the central region and enclosed by the [N II] emission. This is the first time that the spatial segregation revealed by a 2D map of the C II line implies the presence of multiple plasma components. We present an infrared (IR) characterization of the born-again planetary nebulae (PNe) A30 and A78 using IR images and spectra. We demonstrate that the carbon-rich dust in A30 and A78 is spatially coincident with the H-poor ejecta and coexists with hot X-ray-emitting gas up to distances of 50$''$ from the central stars (CSPNs). Dust forms immediately after the born-again event and survives for 1000 yr in the harsh environment around the CSPN as it is destroyed and pushed away by radiation pressure and dragged by hydrodynamical effects. Spitzer IRS spectral maps showed that the broad spectral features at 6.4 and 8.0 $\mu$m, attributed to amorphous carbon formed in H-deficient environments, are associated with the disrupted disk around their CSPN, providing an optimal environment for charge exchange reactions with the stellar wind that produces the soft X-ray emission of these sources. Nebular and dust properties are modeled for A30 with Cloudy taking into account different carbonaceous dust species. Our models predict dust temperatures in the 40-230 K range, five times lower than predicted by previous works. Gas and dust masses for the born-again ejecta in A30 are estimated to be $M_\mathrm{gas}=(4.41^{+0.55}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ M$_\odot$ and $M_\mathrm{dust}=(3.20^{+3.21}_{-2.06})\times10^{-3}$ M$_\odot$, which can be used to estimate a total ejected mass and mass-loss rate for the born-again event of $(7.61^{+3.76}_{-2.20})\times10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ and $\dot{M}=[5-60]\times10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively. Taking into account the carbon trapped into dust grains, we estimate that the C/O mass ratio of the H-poor ejecta of A30 is larger than 1, which favors the very late thermal pulse model over the alternate hypothesis of a nova-like event., Comment: 14 pages, 11 Figures, 1 Table; Accepted to MNRAS

Jets (fast collimated outflows) are claimed to be the main shaping agent of the most asymmetric planetary nebula (PNe) as they impinge on the circumstellar material at late stages of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase. The first jet detected in a PN was that of NGC 2392, yet there is no available image because its low surface brightness contrast with the bright nebular emission. Here we take advantage from the tomographic capabilities of GTC MEGARA high-dispersion integral field spectroscopic observations of the jet in NGC 2392 to gain unprecedented details of its morphology and kinematics. The jet of NGC 2392 is found to emanate from the central star, break through the walls of the inner shell of this iconic PN and extend outside the nebula's outermost regions with an S-shaped morphology suggestive of precession. At odds with the fossil jets found in mature PNe, the jet in NGC 2392 is currently being collimated and launched. The high nebular excitation of NGC 2392, which implies a He$^{++}$/He ionization fraction too high to be attributed to the known effective temperature of the star, has been proposed in the past to hint at the presence of a hot white dwarf companion. In conjunction with the hard X-ray emission from the central star, the present-day jet collimation would support the presence of such a double-degenerate system where one component undergoes accretion from a remnant circumbinary disk of the common envelope phase., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Exoplanet Imaging Data Challenge is a community-wide effort meant to offer a platform for a fair and common comparison of image processing methods designed for exoplanet direct detection. For this purpose, it gathers on a dedicated repository (Zenodo), data from several high-contrast ground-based instruments worldwide in which we injected synthetic planetary signals. The data challenge is hosted on the CodaLab competition platform, where participants can upload their results. The specifications of the data challenge are published on our website. The first phase, launched on the 1st of September 2019 and closed on the 1st of October 2020, consisted in detecting point sources in two types of common data-set in the field of high-contrast imaging: data taken in pupil-tracking mode at one wavelength (subchallenge 1, also referred to as ADI) and multispectral data taken in pupil-tracking mode (subchallenge 2, also referred to as ADI mSDI). In this paper, we describe the approach, organisational lessons-learnt and current limitations of the data challenge, as well as preliminary results of the participants submissions for this first phase. In the future, we plan to provide permanent access to the standard library of data sets and metrics, in order to guide the validation and support the publications of innovative image processing algorithms dedicated to high-contrast imaging of planetary systems., Comment: 36 pages, 27 figures.
