Abstract

The pressure knapping technique develops circa 25,000 cal BP in Northeast Asia and excels at producing highly standardized microblades. Microblade pressure knapping spreads throughout most of Northeast Asia up to the Russian Arctic, and Alaska, in areas where the human presence was unknown. Swan Point CZ4b is the earliest uncontested evidence of human occupation of Alaska, at around 14,000 cal BP. It yields a pressure microblade component produced with the Yubetsu method, which is widespread in Northeast Asia during the Late Glacial period. Through the techno-functional analysis of 634 lithic pieces from this site, this study seeks to identify the techno-economical purposes for which the Yubetsu method was implemented. Data show that the microblade production system is related to an economy based on the planning of future needs, which is visible through blanks standardization, their overproduction, their functional versatility, and the segmentation of part of the chaîne opératoire. This expresses the efficiency and economic value of the microblade production system. The flexible use of pressure microblades identified at Swan Point CZ4b is also found in Japan, Korea, Kamchatka, and the North Baikal region, suggesting that their modes of use accompany the spread of early microblade pressure knapping over an immense territory across Beringia. Abstract

Cobble tools can provide useful information on the economy of sites and the function of activity areas. They can also reveal, through use-wear analysis, activities that would otherwise be invisible in the archaeological record. The use-wear analysis of cobble tools in the ca. 10,000 cal bp occupation (Component 2) of Little Panguingue Creek (Nenana River Valley, Alaska) offers new insights into the function of the site. Nine cobble tools (or fragments) have been found in this component. Most of these tools were used as hammerstones and clearly involved in lithic production at different stages of the knapping process. At least one cobble tool was used in the processing of pigments by pounding. Although so far only one Occupation Unit (U1) has been found, there are some indications that there may be a larger occupation than just a knapping workshop. The hidden activities revealed here through use-wear analysis add evidence that indicates that Little Panguingue Creek may not be just an ephemeral knapping station to exploit the local raw materials for microblade and tool production, but a larger occupation with various activities being carried out. "Researchers have explored how hearths were used and the composition of fuel to understand cultural differences and environmental adaptations. However, scant research has been conducted to understand and document methods for producing fires. Given the long-lasting durability of stone, the stone-on-stone method for producing fire with a strike-a-light will survive for thousands of years in the archaeological record; hence it is important to recognize and document these tools. This paper will present an artifact used as a strike-a-light for producing fire in the subarctic region of interior Alaska (middle Tanana Valley) some 5,500 years ago. The strike-a-light recognized at Goodpaster-IV is, to our knowledge, the most ancient example currently known in the American Subarctic. By reviewing the current state of research on European strike-a-lights from the French Mesolithic and Neolithic and describing use-wear analysis of the strike-a-light, we demonstrate important characteristics that reveal how strike-a-light tools were implemented in prehistory." Abstract

Débitage of pressure microblades appeared in the archaeological record about 20,000 years ago in Northeast Asia, followed by their diffusion toward Central Asia as well as toward Siberia, Alaska, and British Columbia. This research analyzes the spread of these microblade industries from the Asian Far East to North America, utilizing many archaeological collections from Primorye, Siberia, and northwest North America as the basis of a meticulous typo-technological study. The easy recognition of microblade-bearing sites allows studying the evolution, on a wide geographical and chronological scale, of the technoeconomic system during the initial peopling of the New World, while retaining technologically comparable backgrounds. The singularity of this work lies not only in the chosen subject but also in the chosen methodology, i.e., the application of lithic technology as developed by the French school to the study of Palaeolithic industries with microblade components, as well as to some issues concerning the first peopling of the New World. Many questions will be discussed, including: What is the geographical and chronological origin of the first pressure microblade industries? Can we highlight some factors that stimulated such an invention? How were microblades used? What elements can explain the variability of the débitage-producing methods? Is the progression of microblade industries the result of a technological diffusion or a human migration? Can any preferential migratory routes be identified? Is the associated toolkit highly variable or is it relatively constant? How does the analysis of lithic technology allow the assessment of interactions between groups? The new approach developed here addresses the issues from a different angle and leads to new visions, proposals, and results that are noticeably different from those that have been suggested to date., Les débitages de lamelles obtenues par pression apparaissent il y a environ 20 000 ans en Asie du nord-est et leur diffusion est attestée aussi bien vers l'Asie centrale que vers l'Alaska et la Colombie-Britannique en passant par la Sibérie. Cette recherche analyse ainsi la progression de ces industries depuis l'Extrême-Orient vers l'Amérique du Nord : de nombreuses séries en provenance du Primorye, de la Sibérie et du nord-ouest de l'Amérique du Nord font l'objet d'une étude typo-technologique rigoureuse. La facile reconnaissance des industries à composante lamellaire permet d'étudier l'évolution, à une large échelle géographique et chronologique, du système techno-économique du peuplement initial du Nouveau Monde, tout en restant sur des contextes technologiquement comparables. La singularité de ce travail repose non seulement dans le choix du sujet mais aussi dans la méthodologie employée, c'est-à-dire l'application de la technologie lithique développée par l'école française à l'étude des industries paléolithiques à composante lamellaire et à certaines problématiques concernant le premier peuplement du Nouveau Monde. De nombreuses questions seront abordées : quelle est l'origine géographique et chronologique des premiers débitages lamellaires par pression ? Pouvons-nous mettre en évidence certains facteurs moteurs ? Comment sont employées les lamelles ? Quels éléments expliquent la variabilité des méthodes de débitages ? Sommes-nous face à un phénomène de diffusion d'une idée ou de migration de population ? Observe-t-on certaines voies migratoires préférentielles ? L'outillage associé est-il constant ou très variable ? Comment la technologie lithique permet-elle de mettre en évidence certaines zones d'interaction ? L'approche inédite développée ici permet de traiter ces thématiques sous un angle particulier et d'aboutir à des résultats, à des visions et à des propositions sensiblement différents de ce qui a été avancé à ce jour.
