Indigenous languages are a fundamental legacy in the development of human communication, embodying the unique identity and culture of local communities in America. The Second AmericasNLP (Americas Natural Language Processing) Competition Track 1 of NeurIPS (Neural Information Processing Systems) 2022 proposed the task of training automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for five Indigenous languages: Quechua, Guarani, Bribri, Kotiria, and Wa'ikhana. In this paper, we describe the fine-tuning of a state-of-the-art ASR model for each target language, using approximately 36.65 h of transcribed speech data from diverse sources enriched with data augmentation methods. We systematically investigate, using a Bayesian search, the impact of the different hyperparameters on the Wav2vec2.0 XLS-R (Cross-Lingual Speech Representations) variants of 300 M and 1 B parameters. Our findings indicate that data and detailed hyperparameter tuning significantly affect ASR accuracy, but language complexity determines the final result. The Quechua model achieved the lowest character error rate (CER) (12.14), while the Kotiria model, despite having the most extensive dataset during the fine-tuning phase, showed the highest CER (36.59). Conversely, with the smallest dataset, the Guarani model achieved a CER of 15.59, while Bribri and Wa'ikhana obtained, respectively, CERs of 34.70 and 35.23. Additionally, Sobol' sensitivity analysis highlighted the crucial roles of freeze fine-tuning updates and dropout rates. We release our best models for each language, marking the first open ASR models for Wa'ikhana and Kotiria. This work opens avenues for future research to advance ASR techniques in preserving minority Indigenous languages

Topological defects, or singularities, play a key role in the statics and dynamics of complex systems. In magnetism, Bloch point singularities represent point defects that mediate the nucleation of textures such as skyrmions and hopfions. However, while the textures are typically stabilised in chiral magnets, the influence of chirality on the Bloch point singularities remains relatively unexplored. Here we harness advanced three-dimensional nanofabrication to explore the influence of chirality on Bloch point singularities by introducing curvature-induced symmetry breaking in a ferromagnetic nanowire. Combining X-ray magnetic microscopy with the application of in situ magnetic fields, we demonstrate that Bloch point singularity-containing domain walls are stabilised in straight regions of the sample, and determine that curvature can be used to tune the energy landscape of the Bloch points. Not only are we able to pattern pinning points but, by controlling the gradient of curvature, we define asymmetric potential wells to realise a robust Bloch point shift-register with non-reciprocal behaviour. These insights into the influence of symmetry and chirality on singularities offers a route to the controlled nucleation and propagation of topological textures, providing opportunities for logic and computing devices.

To simulate a 200 nm photoexcitation in cyclobutanone to the n-3s Rydberg state, classical trajectories were excited from a Wigner distribution to the singlet state manifold based on excitation energies and oscillator strenghts. Twelve singlet and twelve triplet states are treated using TD-B3LYP-D3/6-31+G$^{**}$ for the electronic structure and the nuclei are propagated with the Tully Surface Hopping method. Using TD-DFT, we are able to predict the bond cleavage that takes place on the S$_1$ surface as well as the ultrafast deactivation from the Rydberg n-3s state to the n$\pi^*$. After showing that triplet states and higher-lying singlet states do not play any crucial role during the early dynamics (i.e., the first 300 fs), the SA(6)-CASSCF(8,11)/aug-cc-pvDZ method is used as an electronic structure and the outcome of the non-adiabatic dynamic simulations is recomputed. Gas-phase ultrafast electron diffraction (GUED) spectra are computed for both electronic structure methods, showing significantly different results.

We use surface acoustic waves of 1 and 3 GHz in hybrid piezoelectric-magnetic systems with either cobalt or nickel as a magnetic layer to generate magnetoacoustic waves and directly image them using stroboscopic X-ray magnetic circular dichroism imaging. Our measurements visualize and quantify the amplitudes of both acoustic and magnetic components of the magnetoacoustic waves, which are generated in the ferromagnetic layer and can propagate over millimeter distances. Additionally, we quantifiedy the magnetoelastic strain component for cobalt and nickel through micromagnetic simulations. We obtained a drop in the magnetoacoustic signal at 3 GHz suggesting a speed limit for the efficient magnetoelastic coupling in our hybrid devices., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Assuming a delta pulse excitation, quantum wavepackets are propagated on the excited state manifold in the energy range from 3.4-5.0 eV for coronene and 2.4-3.5 eV for circumcoronene to study the time evolution of the states as well as their lifetimes. The full-dimensional (102 and 210 degrees of freedom for coronene and circumcoronene respectively) non-adiabatic dynamics simulated with the ML-MCTDH method on twelve coupled singlet electronic states show that the different absorption spectra are only due to electronic delocalisation effects that change the excited state energies, but the structural dynamics in both compounds are identical. Breathing and tilting motions drive the decay dynamics of the electronic states away from the Frank-Condon region independently of the size of the aromatic system. This promising result allows the use of coronene as a model system for the dynamics of larger polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and graphene one dimensional sheets or nanoflakes.

The use of rare-earth-based permanent magnets is one of the critical points for the development of the current technology. On the one hand, industry of the rare-earths is highly polluting due to the negative environmental impact of their extraction and, on the other hand, the sector is potentially dependent on China. Therefore, investigation is required both in the development of rare-earth-free permanent magnets and in sintering processes that enable their greener fabrication with attractive magnetic properties at a more competitive price. This work presents the use of a cold sintering process (CSP) followed by a post-annealing at 1100 {\deg}C as a new way to sinter composite permanent magnets based on strontium ferrite (SFO). Composites that incorporate a percentage < 10% of an additional magnetic phase have been prepared and the morphological, structural and magnetic properties have been evaluated after each stage of the process. CSP induces a phase transformation of SFO in the composites, which is partially recovered by the post-thermal treatment improving the relative density to 92% and the magnetic response of the final magnets with a coercivity of up to 3.0 kOe. Control of the magnetic properties is possible through the composition and the grain size in the sintered magnets. These attractive results show the potential of the sintering approach as an alternative to develop modern rare-earth-free composite permanent magnets.

We have grown high-quality magnetite micrometric islands on ruthenium stripes on sapphire through a combination of magnetron sputtering (Ru film), high-temperature molecular beam epitaxy (oxide islands), and optical lithography. The samples have been characterized by atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism in a photoemission microscope. The magnetic domains on the magnetite islands can be modified by the application of current pulses through the Ru stripes in combination with magnetic fields. The modification of the magnetic domains is explained by the Oersted field generated by the electrical current flowing through the stripes underneath the magnetite nanostructures. The fabrication method is applicable to a wide variety of rock salt and spinel oxides.

The incessant technological pursuit towards a more sustainable and green future depends strongly on permanent magnets. At present, their use is widespread, making it imperative to develop new processing methods that generate highly competitive magnetic properties reducing the fabrication temperatures and costs. Herein, a novel strategy for developing dense sintered magnets based on Sr-hexaferrites with upper functional characteristics is presented. An innovative cold sintering approach using glacial acetic acid as novelty, followed by a post-annealing at 1100 {\deg}C, achieves a densification of the ceramic magnets of 92% with respect to the theoretical density and allows controlling the particle growth. After the cold sintering process, a fraction of amorphous SrO is identified, in addition to a partial transformation to {\alpha}-Fe2O3 as secondary crystalline phase. 46 wt% of SrFe12O19 remains, which is mostly recuperated after the post-thermal treatment. These findings do not significantly modify the final structure of ferrite magnets, neither at short- nor long-range order. The innovative process has a positive impact on the magnetic properties, yielding competitive ferrite magnets at lower sintering temperatures with an energy efficiency of at least 25%, which opens up a new horizon in the field of rare-earth free permanent magnets and new possibilities in other applications.

Magnetoelastic effects in antiferromagnetic CuMnAs are investigated by applying dynamic strain in the 0.01% range through surface acoustic waves in the GaAs substrate. The magnetic state of the CuMnAs/GaAs is characterized by a multitude of submicron-sized domains which we image by x-ray magnetic linear dichroism combined with photoemission electron microscopy. Within the explored strain range, CuMnAs shows magnetoelastic effects in the form of N\'eel vector waves with micrometer wavelength, which corresponds to an averaged overall spin-axis rotation up to 2.4 deg driven by the time-dependent strain from the surface acoustic wave. Measurements at different temperatures indicate a reduction of the wave amplitude when lowering the temperature. However, no domain wall motion has been detected on the nanosecond timescale

We describe a setup that is used for high-frequency electrical sample excitation in a cathode lens electron microscope with the sample stage at high voltage as used in many synchrotron light sources. Electrical signals are transmitted by dedicated high-frequency components to the printed circuit board supporting the sample. Sub-miniature push-on connectors (SMP) are used to realize the connection in the ultra-high vacuum chamber, bypassing the standard feedthrough. A bandwidth up to 4 GHz with -6 dB attenuation was measured at the sample position, which allows to apply sub-nanosecond pulses. We describe different electronic sample excitation schemes and demonstrate a spatial resolution of 56 nm employing the new setup.

In this work we set up a model Hamiltonian to study the excited state quantum dynamics of 1,1-difluoroethylene, a molecule that has equivalent atoms exchanged by a torsional symmetry operation leading to equivalent minima on the potential energy surface. In systems with many degrees of freedom where the minimum energy geometry is not unique, the ground state wavefunction will be delocalised among multiple minima. In this small test system, we probe the excited state dynamics considering localised (in a single minimum) and delocalised (spread over among multiple minima) wavefunctions and check whether this choice would influence the final outcome of the quantum dynamics calculations. Our molecular Hamiltonian comprises seven electronic states, including valence and Rydberg states, computed with the MS-CASPT2 method and projected onto the vibrational coordinates of the twelve normal modes of 1,1-difluoroethylene in its vibrational ground state. This Hamiltonian has been symmetrised along the torsional degree of freedom to make both minima completely equivalent and the model is supported by the excellent agreement with the experimental absorption spectrum. Magnetic skyrmions are compact chiral spin textures that exhibit a rich variety of topological phenomena and hold potential for developing high-density memory devices and novel computing schemes driven by spin currents. Here, we demonstrate room temperature interfacial stabilization and current-driven control of skyrmion bubbles in the ferrimagnetic insulator Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) coupled to Pt. We track the current-induced motion of individual skyrmion bubbles. The ferrimagnetic order of the crystal together with the interplay of spin-orbit torques and pinning determine the skyrmion dynamics in TmIG and result in a strong skyrmion Hall effect characterized by a negative deflection angle and hopping motion. Further, we show that the velocity and depinning threshold of the skyrmion bubbles can be modified by exchange coupling TmIG to an in-plane magnetized Y3Fe5O12 layer, which distorts the spin texture of the skyrmions and leads to a directional-dependent rectification of their dynamics. We have monitored the Verwey transition in micrometer-wide, nanometer-thick magnetite islands on epitaxial Ru films on Al2O3(0001) using Raman spectroscopy. The islands have been grown by high-temperature oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Below 100 K and for thicknesses above 20 nm the Raman spectra correspond to those observed in bulk crystals and high quality thin films for the sub-Verwey magnetite structure. At room temperature the width of the cubic phase modes is similar to the best reported in bulk crystals, indicating a similar level of electron-phonon interaction. The evolution of the Raman spectra upon cooling suggests that for islands thicker than 20 nm, structural changes appear first at temperatures starting at 150 K and the Verwey transition itself takes place at around 115 K. However, islands thinner than 20 nm show a very different Raman spectra indicating that while a transition takes place, the charge order of the ultrathin islands differs markedly from their thicker counterparts, Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

A detailed correlative structural, magnetic and chemical analysis of non-stoichiometric cobalt ferrite micrometric crystals was performed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism combined with photoemission microscopy, low energy electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The vector magnetization at the nanoscale is obtained from magnetic images at different x-ray incidence angles and compared with micromagnetic simulations, revealing the presence of defects which pin the magnetic domain walls. A comparison of different types of defects and the domain walls location suggests that the main source of pinning in these microcrystals are linear structural defects induced in the spinel by the substrate steps underneath the islands., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

The spin Hall effect and its inverse are important spin-charge conversion mechanisms. The direct spin Hall effect induces a surface spin accumulation from a transverse charge current due to spin orbit coupling even in non-magnetic conductors. However, most detection schemes involve additional interfaces, leading to large scattering in reported data. Here we perform interface free x-ray spectroscopy measurements at the Cu L_{3,2} absorption edges of highly Bi-doped Cu (Cu_{95}Bi_{5}). The detected X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal corresponds to an induced magnetic moment of (2.7 +/- 0.5) x 10-12 {\mu}_{B} A^{-1} cm^{2} per Cu atom averaged over the probing depth, which is of the same order as for Pt measured by magneto-optics. The results highlight the importance of interface free measurements to assess material parameters and the potential of CuBi for spin-charge conversion applications.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures holding great potential as nanoscale information carriers. Recently, skyrmions have been predicted in antiferromagnets, with key advantages in terms of stability, size, and dynamical properties over their ferromagnetic analogs. However, their experimental demonstration is still lacking. Here, we show the imprint from ferromagnetic skyrmions into a thin film of an IrMn antiferromagnet, at room temperature and zero external magnetic field, using exchange-bias. Using high-spatial-resolution x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM), we observed the imprinted spin textures within the IrMn from the XMCD signal of the uncompensated Mn spins at the interface with the ferromagnet. Spin Hall effect provides an efficient tool for the conversion of a charge current into a spin current, opening the possibility of producing pure spin currents in non-magnetic materials for the next generation of spintronics devices. In this sense, giant Spin Hall Effect has been recently reported in Cu doped with 0.5 % Bi grown by sputtering and larger values are expected for larger Bi doping, according to first principles calculations. In this work we demonstrate the possibility of doping Cu with up to 10 % of Bi atoms without evidences of Bi surface segregation or cluster formation, as studied by different microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. In addition, YIG/BiCu structures have been grown, showing a spin mixing conductance larger that the one shown by similar Pt/YIG structures.
