Abstract

Abstract Tricomb spectroscopy unveils a new dimension to standard linear and nonlinear spectroscopic analysis, offering the possibility to reveal the almost real-time evolution of complex systems with unprecedented accuracy. Current triple comb configurations are based on the use of mode-locked lasers, which impose constraints on the comb parameters, and require complex electronic synchronization, thus limiting potential applications. In this paper, we present the experimental demonstration of a new type of all-fiber, self-phase-locked, frequency-agile tri-comb light source. It is based on the nonlinear spectral broadening of three electro-optic modulator-based frequency combs in a three-core fiber. The exploitation of spatial multiplexing of light in optical fibers offers new possibilities to generate broadband-frequency combs that are highly coherent with each other. After characterizing the stability of the source and performing several dual-comb test measurements, we revealed the high mutual coherence between the three combs through the demonstration of a 2-D pump-probe four-wave mixing spectroscopy experiment.

Abstract

Cerium-doped-silica glasses are widely used as ionizing radiation sensing materials. However, their response needs to be characterized as a function of measurement temperature for application in various environments, such as in vivo dosimetry, space and particle accelerators. In this paper, the temperature effect on the radioluminescence (RL) response of Cerium-doped glassy rods was investigated in the 193–353 K range under different X-ray dose rates. The doped silica rods were prepared using the sol-gel technique and spliced into an optical fiber to guide the RL signal to a detector. Then, the experimental RL levels and kinetics measurements during and after irradiation were compared with their simulation counterparts. This simulation is based on a standard system of coupled non-linear differential equations to describe the processes of electron-hole pairs generation, trapping-detrapping and recombination in order to shed light on the temperature effect on the RL signal dynamics and intensity.

Abstract

The radiation-induced emission (RIE) of Gd3+-doped sol–gel silica glass has been shown to have suitable properties for use in the dosimetry of beams of ionizing radiation in applications such as radiotherapy. Linear electron accelerators are commonly used as clinical radiotherapy beams, and in this paper, the RIE properties were investigated under electron irradiation. A monochromator setup was used to investigate the light properties in selected narrow wavelength regions, and a spectrometer setup was used to measure the optical emission spectra in various test configurations. The RIE output as a function of depth in acrylic was measured and compared with a reference dosimeter system for various electron energies, since the dose–depth measuring abilities of dosimeters in radiotherapy is of key interest. The intensity of the main radiation-induced luminescence (RIL) of the Gd3+-ions at 314 nm was found to well represent the dose as a function of depth, and was possible to separate from the Cherenkov light that was also induced in the measurement setup. After an initial suppression of the luminescence following the electron bunch, which is ascribed to a transient radiation-induced attenuation from self-trapped excitons (STEX), the 314 nm component was found to have a decay time of approximately 1.3 ms. An additional luminescence was also observed in the region 400 nm to 600 nm originating from the decay of the STEX centers, likely exhibiting an increasing luminescence with a dose history in the tested sample.

Abstract

Radiation-induced emission of doped sol-gel silica glass samples was investigated under a pulsed 20-MeV electron beam. The studied samples were drawn rods doped with cerium, copper, or gadolinium ions, which were connected to multimode pure-silica core fibers to transport the induced luminescence from the irradiation area to a signal readout system. The luminescence pulses in the samples induced by the electron bunches were studied as a function of deposited dose per electron bunch. All the investigated samples were found to have a linear response in terms of luminescence as a function of electron bunch sizes between 10−5 Gy/bunch and 1.5×10−2 Gy/bunch. The presented results show that these types of doped silica rods can be used for monitoring a pulsed electron beam, as well as to evaluate the dose deposited by the individual electron bunches. The electron accelerator used in the experiment was a medical type used for radiation therapy treatments, and these silica rod samples show high potential for dosimetry in radiotherapy contexts.

Abstract

The incorporation of Ce3+ ions in silicate glasses is a crucial issue for luminescence-based sensing applications. In this article, we report on silica glass preforms doped with cerium ions fabricated by modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) under different atmospheres in order to favor the Ce3+ oxidation state. Structural analysis and photophysical investigations are performed on the obtained glass rods. The preform fabricated under reducing atmosphere presents the highest photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY). This preform drawn into a 125 µm-optical fiber, with a Ce-doped core diameter of about 40 µm, is characterized to confirm the presence of Ce3+ ions inside this optical fiber core. The fiber is then tested in an all-fibered X-ray dosimeter configuration. We demonstrate that this fiber allows the remote monitoring of the X-ray dose rate (flux) through a radioluminescence (RL) signal generated around 460 nm. The response dependence of RL versus dose rate exhibits a linear behavior over five decades, at least from 330 µGy(SiO2)/s up to 22.6 Gy(SiO2)/s. These results attest the potentialities of the MCVD-made Ce-doped material, obtained under reducing atmosphere, for real-time remote ionizing radiation dosimetry.

Abstract

Optically activated glasses are essential to the development of new radiation detection systems. In this study, a bulk glassy rod co-doped with Cu and Ce ions, was prepared via the sol-gel technique and was drawn at about 2000 °C into a cylindrical capillary rod to evaluate its optical and radioluminescence properties. The sample showed optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) bands attributed to Cu+ and Ce3+ ions. The presence of these two ions inside the host silica glass matrix was also confirmed using PL kinetics measurements. The X-ray dose rate was remotely monitored via the radioluminescence (RL) signal emitted by the Cu/Ce scintillating sensor. In order to transport the optical signal from the irradiation zone to the detection located in the instrumentation zone, an optical transport fiber was spliced to the sample under test. This RL signal exhibited a linear behavior regarding the dose rate in the range at least between 1.1 mGy(SiO2)/s and 34 Gy(SiO2)/s. In addition, a spectroscopic analysis of this RL signal at different dose rates revealed that the same energy levels attributed to Cu+ and Ce3+ ions are involved in both the RL mechanism and the PL phenomenon. Moreover, integrated intensities of the RL sub-bands related to both Cu+ and Ce3+ ions depend linearly on the dose rate at least in the investigated range from 102 mGy(SiO2)/s up to 4725 mGy(SiO2)/s. The presence of Ce3+ ions also reduces the formation of HC1 color centers after X-ray irradiation.

Abstract

International audience; We present a novel fiber-optic component, a “tapered multicore fiber (MCF)”, designed for integration into ultraminiaturized endoscopes for minimally invasive two-photon point-scanning imaging and to address the power delivery issue that has faced MCF-based lensless endoscopes. With it we achieve experimentally a factor 6.0 increase in two-photon signal yield while keeping the ability to point-scan by the memory effect and a factor 8.9 sacrificing the memory effect. To reach this optimal design, we first develop and validate a fast numerical model capable of predicting the essential properties of an arbitrarily tapered MCF from its structural parameters. We then use this model to identify the tapered MCF design parameters that result in a chosen set of target properties (point-spread function, delivered power, presence or absence of memory effect). We fabricate the identified target designs by stack-and-draw and postprocessing on a CO2 laser-based glass processing and splicing system. Finally, we demonstrate the performance gain of the fabricated tapered MCFs in two-photon imaging when used in a lensless endoscope system. Our results show that tailoring of the taper profile brings new degrees of freedom that can be efficiently exploited for lensless endoscopes.

Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate and evaluate a new design of micro-structured core erbium-doped few-mode fiber to be used as optical amplifier in the context of mode-division multiplexing. This concept is proposed so as to better control the distribution of the Er3+ ions in the core area, thus permitting to adjust the overall differential modal gains between the different signal modes. The design presented here consists of 19 erbium-doped inclusions embedded in a pedestal geometry guiding 10 modes in the C-band. It has been optimized numerically so as to reach the equalized amplification of all the signal modes. The fiber has been realized and combined with custom-made dual-wavelength mode multiplexers based on multi-plane light conversion to shape the signal and pump beams. Amplification properties have finally been evaluated experimentally.

Abstract

We report the development of a silica glass single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber with birefringence induced by artificial anisotropic glass in the circular core without any external stress zones or structured cladding. The fiber core is composed of silica and germanium-doped silica nanorods ordered in submicrometer interleaved layers. The fiber has a measured cut-off wavelength at 1113 nm, phase birefringence of 0.3×10−4, and an effective mode diameter of 10.5 µm at the wavelength of 1550 nm. The polarization extinction ratio in the fiber is 20 dB at 1550 nm. The fiber is compatible with the standard SMF-28 fiber and can be easily integrated using standard fusion splicing with losses of 0.1 dB.

In this paper, we propose a comparison of fiber in-line Fabry-Pérot pressure sensors with different structure. The modeling and simulation of pressure sensor with different diaphragm and cavity shape is made. The sensor temperature response up to 900°C is presented. Pressure measurement up to 70bar of four different sensors are demonstrated.

Abstract

International audience; In third generation sequencing, the production of quality data requires the selection of molecules longer than ∼20 kbp, but the size selection threshold of most purification technologies is smaller than this target. Here, we describe a technology operated in a capillary with a tunable selection threshold in the range of 3 to 40 kbp controlled by an electric field. We demonstrate that the selection cut-off is sharp, the purification yield is high, and the purification throughput is scalable. We also provide an analytical model that the actuation settings of the filter. The selection of high molecular weight genomic DNA from the melon Cucumis melo L., a diploid organism of ∼0.45 Gbp, is then reported. Linked-read sequencing data show that the N50 phase block size, which scores the correct representation of two chromosomes, is enhanced by a factor of 2 after size selection, establishing the relevance and versatility of our technology.

Abstract

L’avènement des fibres à cristal photonique dans les années 90 a été une révolution sur les plans tant scientifique qu’applicatif. Leur structuration transverse complexe leur confère en effet des propriétés de guidage inédites. Les fibres optiques topographiques introduites dans les années 2010 offrent, quant à elles, un degré de liberté supplémentaire grâce à leur structuration longitudinale contrôlée. Bien que leur potentiel applicatif soit loin d’être totalement exploré, elles ont déjà été largement exploitées en optique guidée.

Abstract

The incorporation of Ce3+ ions in silicate glasses is a crucial issue for luminescence-based sensing applications. In this article, we report on silica glass preforms doped with cerium ions fabricated by modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) under different atmospheres in order to favor the Ce3+ oxidation state. Structural analysis and photophysical investigations are performed on the obtained glass rods. The preform fabricated under reducing atmosphere presents the highest photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY). This preform drawn into a 125 µm-optical fiber, with a Ce-doped core diameter of about 40 µm, is characterized to confirm the presence of Ce3+ ions inside this optical fiber core. The fiber is then tested in an all-fibered X-ray dosimeter configuration. We demonstrate that this fiber allows the remote monitoring of the X-ray dose rate (flux) through a radioluminescence (RL) signal generated around 460 nm. The response dependence of RL versus dose rate exhibits a linear behavior over five decades, at least from 330 µGy(SiO2)/s up to 22.6 Gy(SiO2)/s. These results attest the potentialities of the MCVD-made Ce-doped material, obtained under reducing atmosphere, for real-time remote ionizing radiation dosimetry.

Abstract

International audience; We report an experimental investigation of the photoluminescence (PL) activities detected in as-drawn and γ-rayirradiated samples of a microstructured optical fiber elaborated with a silica-based core doped with Bismuthions. The presence of several visible emission bands is revealed and characterized under 325 nm laser excitation.In both samples, four narrow emission bands are studied and analyzed. They are similarly bleached by a long UVlaser exposure times. In addition, time-resolved luminescence data show that all these bands possess a similarlifetime of ∼4 μs Data analysis indicated that the energy levels scheme of the point defects responsible for thesebands consists of: one above 5 eV, one at ∼3.6 eV, and at least one in the range 2.6–2.8 eV and of the groundone. As a consequence, even if the exact structural model cannot yet be fully identified, we suggest that thebands originate from color centers related to the Bismuth ions.

Abstract

International audience; This work reports on the fabrication and the characterization of hybrid optical fibers with silicon core and silica cladding. Adopting a two-step manufacturing technique derived from the stack-and-draw method, silicon-core fibers with core dimensions ranging from about 0.8 mu m to 3.5 mu m have been successively drawn into hundreds of meter-long fibers. A 3.3 mu m diameter core fiber has been more extensively characterized and background losses for this as-drawn fiber are less than 0.2 dB/cm between 1250 nm and 1650 nm, with a minimum of 0.12 dB/cm around 1600 nm. The crystalline state of the core and the limited impact of oxygen contamination were confirmed by Raman scattering, x-ray diffraction, HR-STEM, and ToF-SIMS analysis. Transmission peaks associated with specific modal distributions are evidenced under certain injection conditions and their positions are shown to be in good accordance with mode cut-off wavelengths of a step-index silicon-core fiber.

Abstract

Radiation-induced emission of doped sol-gel silica glass samples was investigated under a pulsed 20-MeV electron beam. The studied samples were drawn rods doped with cerium, copper, or gadolinium ions, which were connected to multimode pure-silica core fibers to transport the induced luminescence from the irradiation area to a signal readout system. The luminescence pulses in the samples induced by the electron bunches were studied as a function of deposited dose per electron bunch. All the investigated samples were found to have a linear response in terms of luminescence as a function of electron bunch sizes between 10−5 Gy/bunch and 1.5×10−2 Gy/bunch. The presented results show that these types of doped silica rods can be used for monitoring a pulsed electron beam, as well as to evaluate the dose deposited by the individual electron bunches. The electron accelerator used in the experiment was a medical type used for radiation therapy treatments, and these silica rod samples show high potential for dosimetry in radiotherapy contexts.

All-optical wavelength conversion of dual-polarization signals over 9.6 nm in C+L-band is demonstrated in a twin-core highly nonlinear fibre for the first time. Conversion efficiencies between -1 dB and -8.5 dB for both cores are obtained simultaneously.

Abstract

We evaluate the temperature effect on the X-ray radiation-induced luminescence (RIL) of Cu- or Ce-single-doped and CuCe-codoped silica glass. Previous investigations showed that these optical materials exhibit interesting dosimetry properties, such as very good detection capabilities and linear response over a large range of dose rate. However, several radiation environments, such as space and particle accelerators, also require a careful assessment of the temperature effect. With this aim, we characterize their RIL efficiency and spectral dependence at several irradiation temperatures. We demonstrate that all the investigated materials present a nonnegligible temperature dependence of the RIL in the range −120 °C to 80 °C, whilst preserving linear dose rate dependence at each irradiation temperature. However, the temperature effect on the RIL signal is still compensable via calibration and temperature monitoring.

Abstract

Cerium doped silica glasses are attractive materials for radiation dosimetry. In this article, Ce-doped air-clad optical fiber has been fabricated for real-time X-ray dose rate measurements through the radioluminescence (RL) signal. The structural properties of the obtained material were studied using Raman spectroscopy. The presence of Ce3+ ions inside the sol-gel-derived silica core was confirmed using photoluminescence (PL) measurements. This optical fiber, with a high numerical aperture, was tested as active and guiding material in an all-fibered remote X-ray dosimeter configuration. We demonstrated that the response dependence of RL versus dose rate is linear from 52 mGy(SiO2)/s up to at least 1.5 Gy(SiO2)/s, allowing to monitor the dose rate evolution during an irradiation run. The presented results confirm the potentialities of this microstructured optical fiber to monitor ionizing radiations in harsh environments. They also pave the way toward an alternative to the widely used approach that uses scintillator material at the end of a transport’s optical fiber.

Abstract

The luminescence properties of several doped materials are explored in many fields of application, including ionizing radiation dosimetry. These luminescence properties are essentially provided by the doping element. In this article, we report thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) measurements of the trapping and recombination centers involved in the luminescence process of sol–gel-derived glasses. Three-doped species will be concerned: one transition metal (Cu), one rare-earth element (Ce), and a combination of both in the sol–gel silica matrix. By comparing the performances of these samples according to the criteria required for dosimetry by both TSL and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) (sensitivity, dose response, and thermal fading), the results show that the simply doped samples really are potential candidates for fibered-OSL dosimetry.

Abstract

The photonic nanojet (PNJ) was first reported by Chen et al.in 2004 through finite-difference time domain modeling of cylindrical structures under plan wave illumination. PNJ is a propagative beam with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) slightly smaller than a half wavelength. The power density can be more than 200 times higher than the one of the incident wave. This concentration can be achieved using a transparent dielectric microcylinder with a wavelength-scale radius. Gustav Mie obtained the exact solution of Maxwell’s equations for a dielectric microsphere in 1908. Applying this method, PNJ in the 3D case of a dielectric sphere was first reported by Li and Lecler. The photonic nanojet appears as a narrow and elongated spot with a high intensity electromagnetic field. The key parameters of PNJs, which are their FWHM, focal distance, decay length, and light intensity maximum, have been the subject of extensive theoretical and experimental studies. An in-depth understanding of photonic nanojet is nevertheless needed to fully exploit the potential of microspheres as optical super-lens. The original properties of PNJs make them ideal candidate in a wide range of applications, including nonlinear absorption enhancement, single-molecule fluorescence measurement, laser surgery, super-resolved microscopy, manipulation and detection of single sub-100 nm nanoparticles and biomolecules and laser sub-micro etching. Recently, the possibility to obtain a PNJ using an optical fiber with a shaped tip has opened new interests in the challenging field of direct laser subwavelength micromachining. To start with, the fiber is easier to move than the microsphere. Furthermore, the sphere is corrupted after the first irradiation due to their contact with the sample. On the opposite, the fiber tips have no contact with the processed surface and are not altered by the removed material. PNJs have already demonstrated the ability to reduce the laser etching size using shaped optical fiber tips. With a shaped optical fiber tips, the PNJ phenomenon is only due to the fundamental mode of the fiber. However, a standard single-mode fiber has three drawbacks for PNJ generation. Abstract

The lensless endoscope represents the ultimate limit in miniaturization of imaging tools: an image can be transmitted through a (multi-mode or multi-core) fiber by numerical or physical inversion of the fiber's pre- measured transmission matrix. However, the transmission matrix changes completely with only minute conformational changes of the fiber, which has so far limited lensless endoscopes to fibers that must be kept static. In this work we report a lensless endoscope which is exempt from the requirement of static fiber by designing and employing a custom-designed conformationally invariant fiber. We give experimental and theoretical validations and determine the parameter space over which the invariance is maintained.

Abstract

International audience; Hybrid optical fibers, i.e. optical fibers that combine, in the same structure, glass with crystal, metal, polymer or a second type of glass, open access to a wide range of optical properties or optical functions not accessible to common single-glass-made optical fibers. Silicon-core fibers are one type of hybrid fibers that have been intensively studied since 2006 with the aim to take benefit of the mid-infrared transparency of silicon or to implement opto-electrical functions in the optical fiber itself. Some of the unique optical properties of these semiconductor-core fibers have been demonstrated but it is admitted that optical losses are still today a drag on the rise of performances and hence devote specific attention. Post-processing based on laser or thermal annealing can be applied on the as-drawn fibers to improve core crystallinity and then reduce optical losses. However, such processing techniques have been demonstrated on centimeter-long fibers only. In the present paper, we demonstrate as-drawn silicon-core fiber with loss level below 0.2 dB/cm on the 1250-1650nm wavelength range, this fiber being continuously manufactured over length exceeding one hundred of meters. Several fibers have been fabricated from a rod-in-stack approach and different core dimensions ranging from about 0.8 to 3.4 mu m have been successively realized and extensive characterizations (XRD, micro-Raman spectroscopy, TEM and ToF-SIMS analysis) have been conducted on the 3.4 mu m core fiber. The crystalline state of the core, the absence of oxygen contamination and the optical transmission from 1.1 to 4 mu m will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; We report the fabrication and characterization of the first double clad tubular anti-resonant hollow core fiber. It allows to deliver ultrashort pulses without temporal nor spectral distortions in the 700-1000 nm wavelength range and to efficiently collect scattered light in a high numerical aperture double clad. The output fiber mode is shaped with a silica microsphere generating a photonic nanojet, making it well suitable for nonlinear microendoscopy application. Additionally, we provide an open access software allowing to find optimal drawing parameters for the fabrication of tubular hollow core fibers.

Abstract

Optically activated glasses are essential to the development of new radiation detection systems. In this study, a bulk glassy rod co-doped with Cu and Ce ions, was prepared via the sol-gel technique and was drawn at about 2000 &deg, C into a cylindrical capillary rod to evaluate its optical and radioluminescence properties. The sample showed optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) bands attributed to Cu+ and Ce3+ ions. The presence of these two ions inside the host silica glass matrix was also confirmed using PL kinetics measurements. The X-ray dose rate was remotely monitored via the radioluminescence (RL) signal emitted by the Cu/Ce scintillating sensor. In order to transport the optical signal from the irradiation zone to the detection located in the instrumentation zone, an optical transport fiber was spliced to the sample under test. This RL signal exhibited a linear behavior regarding the dose rate in the range at least between 1.1 mGy(SiO2)/s and 34 Gy(SiO2)/s. In addition, a spectroscopic analysis of this RL signal at different dose rates revealed that the same energy levels attributed to Cu+ and Ce3+ ions are involved in both the RL mechanism and the PL phenomenon. Moreover, integrated intensities of the RL sub-bands related to both Cu+ and Ce3+ ions depend linearly on the dose rate at least in the investigated range from 102 mGy(SiO2)/s up to 4725 mGy(SiO2)/s. The presence of Ce3+ ions also reduces the formation of HC1 color centers after X-ray irradiation.

Abstract

This Letter reports on a large mode area pixelated Bragg fiber in which some high refractive index rods were replaced by boron-doped rods that allows polarization maintaining behavior while keeping single-mode behavior. The realized all-solid fiber has a core diameter of 35 µm. The fundamental mode is circular with a 25 µm mode field diameter around 1 µm wavelength, and the polarization extinction ratio reaches 30 dB. Finally, this fiber is single-mode and bendable up to a 20 cm radius with fundamental mode losses lower than 0.3 dB/m.

Abstract

Optical fibers are close to ideal detectors to measure radiation beams for cancer therapy, either as beam monitors or for dosimetiy. Several organic and inorganic fibers were tested with proton and neutron beams. One material stood out in its almost complete lack of quenching for low proton energies.
