We describe the atomic and molecular data that were used for the abundance analyses of FGK-type stars carried out within the Gaia-ESO Survey. We present an unprecedented effort to create a homogeneous line list, which was used by several abundance analysis groups to calculate synthetic spectra and equivalent widths. The atomic data are accompanied by quality indicators and detailed references to the sources. The atomic and molecular data are made publicly available in electronic form. In general experimental transition probabilities were preferred but theoretical values were also used. Astrophysical gf-values were avoided due to the model-dependence of such a procedure. For elements whose lines are significantly affected by hyperfine structure or isotopic splitting a concerted effort has been made to collate the necessary data for the individual line components. We also performed a detailed investigation of available data for line broadening due to collisions with neutral hydrogen atoms. Synthetic spectra calculated for the Sun and Arcturus were used to assess the blending properties of the lines. Among a subset of over 1300 lines of 35 elements in the wavelength ranges from 475 nm to 685 nm and from 850 nm to 895 nm we identified about 200 lines of 24 species which have accurate gf-values and are free of blends in the spectra of the Sun and Arcturus. For the broadening due to collisions with neutral hydrogen we recommend data based on Anstee-Barklem-O'Mara theory, where available, and to avoid lines of neutral species otherwise. Theoretical broadening data by R.L. Kurucz should be used for Sc II, Ti II, and Y II lines. For ionised rare-earth species the Uns\"old approximation with an enhancement factor of 1.5 for the line width can be used. Desirable improvements in atomic data were identified for a number of species, including Al I, S I, Cr II, Na I, Si I, Ca II, and Ni I., Comment: Accepted for publication in section 12. We report the discovery of eight lithium-rich field giants found in a high resolution spectroscopic sample of over 700 metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-0.5) selected from the RAVE survey. The majority of the Li-rich giants in our sample are very metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-1.9), and have a Li abundance (in the form of 7Li), A(Li)=log(n(Li)/n(H))+12, between 2.30 and 3.63, well above the typical upper red giant branch limit, A(Li)<0.5, while two stars, with A(Li)~1.7-1.8, show similar lithium abundances to normal giants at the same gravity. We further included two metal-poor, Li-rich globular cluster giants in our sample, namely the previously discovered M3-IV101 and newly discovered (in this work) M68-A96. This comprises the largest sample of metal-poor Li-rich giants to date. We performed a detailed abundance analysis of all stars, finding that the majority our sample stars have elemental abundances similar to that of Li-normal halo giants. Although the evolutionary phase of each Li-rich giant cannot be definitively determined, the Li-rich phase is likely connected to extra mixing at the red giant branch bump or early asymptotic giant branch that triggers cool bottom processing in which the bottom of the outer convective envelope is connected to the H-burning shell in the star. The surface of a star becomes Li-enhanced as 7Be (which burns to 7Li) is transported to the stellar surface via the Cameron-Fowler mechanism. Kinematic surveys of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites of the Milky Way are revealing tantalising hints about the structure of dark matter (DM) haloes at the low-mass end of the galaxy luminosity function. At the bright end, modelling of spiral galaxies has shown that their rotation curves are consistent with the hypothesis of a Universal Rotation Curve whose shape is supported by a cored dark matter halo. In this paper, we investigate whether the internal kinematics of the Milky Way dSphs are consistent with the particular cored DM distributions which reproduce the properties of spiral galaxies. Although the DM densities in dSphs are typically almost two orders of magnitude higher than those found in (larger) disk systems, we find consistency between dSph kinematics and Burkert DM haloes whose core radii r0 and central densities {\rho}0 lie on the extrapolation of the scaling law seen in spiral galaxies: log {\rho}0 \simeq {\alpha} log r0 + const with 0.9 < {\alpha} < 1.1. We similarly find that the dSph data are consistent with the relation between {\rho}0 and baryon scale length seen in spiral galaxies. While the origin of these scaling relations is unclear, the finding that a single DM halo profile is consistent with kinematic data in galaxies of widely varying size, luminosity and Hubble Type is important for our understanding of observed galaxies and must be accounted for in models of galaxy formation., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have undertaken the study of the elemental abundances and kinematic properties of a metal-poor sample of candidate thick-disk stars selected from the RAVE spectroscopic survey of bright stars to differentiate among the present scenarios of the formation of the thick disk. In this paper, we report on a sample of 214 red giant branch, 31 red clump/horizontal branch, and 74 main-sequence/sub-giant branch metal-poor stars, which serves to augment our previous sample of only giant stars. We find that the thick disk [alpha/Fe] ratios are enhanced, and have little variation (<0.1 dex), in agreement with our previous study. The augmented sample further allows, for the first time, investigation of the gradients in the metal-poor thick disk. For stars with [Fe/H] < -1.2, the thick disk shows very small gradients, <0.03 +/- 0.02 dex/kpc, in alpha-enhancement, while we find a +0.01 +/- 0.04 dex/kpc radial gradient and a -0.09 +/- 0.05 dex/kpc vertical gradient in iron abundance. In addition, we show that the peak of the distribution of orbital eccentricities for our sample agrees better with models in which the stars that comprise the thick disk were formed primarily in the Galaxy, with direct accretion of stars contributing little. Our results thus disfavor direct accretion of stars from dwarf galaxies into the thick disk as a major contributor to the thick disk population, but cannot discriminate between alternative models for the thick disk, such as those that invoke high-redshift (gas-rich) mergers, heating of a pre-existing thin stellar disk by a minor merger, or efficient radial migration of stars., Comment: 21 pages, 31 figures, and 5 tables. We identify a new, nearby (0.5 < d < 10 kpc) stream in data from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE). As the majority of stars in the stream lie in the constellation of Aquarius we name it the Aquarius Stream. We identify 15 members of the stream lying between 30 < l < 75 and -70< b <-50, with heliocentric line-of-sight velocities V_los~-200 km/s. The members are outliers in the radial velocity distribution, and the overdensity is statistically significant when compared to mock samples created with both the Besan\c{c}on Galaxy model and newly-developed code Galaxia. The metallicity distribution function and isochrone fit in the log g - T_eff plane suggest the stream consists of a 10 Gyr old population with [m/H]~-1.0. We explore relations to other streams and substructures, finding the stream cannot be identified with known structures: it is a new, nearby substructure in the Galaxy's halo. Using a simple dynamical model of a dissolving satellite galaxy we account for the localization of the stream. We find that the stream is dynamically young and therefore likely the debris of a recently disrupted dwarf galaxy or globular cluster. We use N-body simulations of star clusters to investigate the possible dynamical origins of the observed spread in core radius among intermediate-age and old star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Two effects are considered, a time-varying external tidal field and variations in primordial hard binary fraction. Simulations of clusters orbiting a point-mass galaxy show similar core radius evolution for clusters on both circular and elliptical orbits and we therefore conclude that the tidal field of the LMC has not yet significantly influenced the evolution of the intermediate-age clusters. The presence of large numbers of hard primordial binaries in a cluster leads to core radius expansion; however, the magnitude of the effect is insufficient to explain the observations. Further, the range of binary fractions required to produce significant core radius growth is inconsistent with the observational evidence that all the LMC clusters have similar stellar luminosity functions., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

As part of a large HST project to study the formation and evolution of rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we present results for the Galactic bulge metal-rich globular cluster NGC6553. HST observations using WFPC2, NICMOS and STIS were obtained for this cluster. The primarily reason for studying NGC6553 is to allow the possibility to transform our NICMOS and STIS magnitudes directly into stellar masses. This is particularly important for determining the low mass end of the IMF. NGC 6553 was chosen because its metallicity, [Fe/H]$=-0.22\pm 0.05$, is representative of the metallicities, Comment: newpasp Latex, 6 pages (incl. 3 PS figures). to appear in Massive Stellar Clusters, ASP Conf. We have identified a candidate 1-2 x 10^5 year old luminous white dwarf in NGC 1818, a young star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This discovery strongly constrains the boundary mass M_c at which stars stop forming neutron stars and start forming white dwarfs, to M_c > 7.6 Msun., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, greyscale image available by ftp from elson@ast.cam.ac.uk. We present V and I photometry of two open clusters in the LMC down to V ~ 26. The clusters were imaged with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera - 2 on board of the Hubble Space Telescope, as part of the Medium Deep Survey Key-Project. Both are low luminosity (Mv ~ -3.5), low mass systems (M ~ 10^3 Msolar). The chance discovery of these two clusters in two parallel WFPC2 fields suggests a significant incompleteness in the LMC cluster census near the bar. One of the clusters is roughly elliptical and compact, with a steep light profile, a central surface brightness Mu_v(0) 20.2 mag/arcsec2, half-light radius Rhl ~ 0.9 pc (total visual major diameter D ~ 3 pc) and an estimated mass M ~ 1500 Msolar. From the colour-magnitude diagram and isochrone fits we estimate its age as t ~ 2-5 10^8 years. Its mass function has a fitted slope of Gamma = \Delta log \phi (M) / \Delta log M = -1.8 +/- 0.7 in the range probed (0.9 < M/Msolar < 4.5). The other cluster is more irregular and sparser, having shallower density and surface brightness profiles. We obtain Gamma = -1.2 +/- 0.4, and estimate its mass as M ~ 400 Msolar. A derived upper limit for its age is t < 5 10^8 years. Both clusters have mass functions with slopes similar to that of R136, a massive LMC cluster, for which HST results indicate Gamma ~ -1.2. They also seem to be relaxed in their cores and well contained in their tidal radii., Comment: 16 pages plus 9 figures (2 large figs not included)

We present $V$ and $I$ photometry, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, for $\sim 15,800$ stars in a field in the inner disk of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We confirm previous results indicating that an intense star formation event, probably corresponding to the formation of the LMC disk, occurred a few times $10^9$ years ago. We find a small but real difference between our field and one further out in the disk observed by Gallagher et al (1996): either star formation in the inner disk commenced slightly earlier, or the stars are slightly more metal rich. We also find evidence for a later burst, around 1 Gyr ago, which may correspond to the formation of the LMC bar. About 5% of the stars in our field are substantially older than either burst, and are probably members of an old disk or halo population with age $\sim 12$ Gyr., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures: only 3 available ellectronically - complete copies by request from elson@ast.cam.ac.uk

We present V and I photometry for a field 5' from the center of 47 Tuc. The field was imaged with the HST WFPC2 as part of the Medium Deep Survey project. The luminosity function (LF) continually rises in the domain $5 < M_I < 9$ with a slope $\Delta log \Phi (M) / \Delta M \sim 0.15$ and then drops off sharply. We compare our LF with that derived by De Marchi \& Paresce for a neighbouring HST field. The two independent LFs are very similar in the entire range of luminosities probed ($M_I < 10$). Comparisons are also made to other HST LFs derived by several authors for different clusters in the Galaxy. We use the KS test to assess the significance of the differences found. The LFs obtained with HST are consistent with being derived from the same population down to $M_I \sim 9.0$. Beyond that, statistically significant variations arise. Globular cluster LFs also differ according to the prominence of a plateau in the bright end ($5 < M_I < 6.5$). Mass functions are sensitive to the mass-luminosity relation. Different approaches to deriving the 47 Tuc mass function from its LF lead to markedly different results at the low mass end. For $M > 0.4 M_\odot$, the 47 Tuc mass function is significantly different from that of \wcen. The calibrated HST $M_V(V-I)$ colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) show a trend with metallicity in the sense of metal richer systems having redder CMDs for a fixed absolute magnitude. The main-sequence becomes shallower with increasing metallicity. For metal-rich systems, the CMDs derived from HST are in general agreement with previous ground-based studies. However, the CMDs of metal poor subdwarfs observed from the ground are shallower than those of globular clusters observed with HST., Comment: 17 pages plus 8 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS
