Due to the short harvest season and their sensitivity to storage, the preservation of fresh mulberry fruits is a very important process. Drying is a method used to preserve mulberry fruits in the long term. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied for the optimization of hybrid drying conditions of two different sour black mulberries. The linear and interaction effects of independent parameters such as temperature (50, 60 and 70°C) and microwave power (100, 200 and 300 W) variables were determined on mulberries. Bioactive properties and energy aspects were monitored as influenced by drying conditions. According to the results increase in microwave power provided a significant decrement in the specific energy consumption (SEC) and the total anthocyanin content (TAC), while increase in the energy efficiency (ηen) and total phenolic content (TPC) for both genotypes. In all cases, statistical values showed that all drying curves of black mulberry were best described by the Logistic model. Multiple response optimization was carried out for studied parameters and it was concluded that maximum antiradical activity (ARA), TPC, TAC, ηen and minimum drying time (DT) and SEC values would be at 300 W-50 ºC (desirability=0.842) and 300 W-66.5 ºC (desirability=0.744), for Morus nigra 1 (MN1) and Morus nigra 2 (MN2), respectively. According to the finding, the greatest TPC, ARA, TAC, DT, SEC and ηen were determined as 20.10 mg GAE/g, 86.00%, 456 mg/kg, 330 min, 18.59 kWh/kg and 9.04% for MN1, and 18.08 mg GAE/g, 83.92%, 835.81 mg/kg, 330 min, 16.16 kWh/kg and 10.40 % for MN2, respectively.

Among these plant species, naturally growing wild pears (Pyrus elaeagrifolia Pall.) are resistant to chlorosis and drought and could be used in rootstock development programs. In present study, genetic diversity in 96 wild pear genotypes collected from 11 different provinces (Kayseri, Ankara, Kahramanmaraş, Adana, Nevşehir, Konya, Isparta, Denizli, Uşak, Afyonkarahisar, Eskişehir) and regions of Turkey through selection was investigated with the use of SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) molecular marker system. Present analyses carried out in ABI (Applied Biosystem) 3500 capillary electrophoresis system revealed 93 scorable and all polymorphic bands, thus polymorphism rate was 100%. In UPGMA (Unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean) dendrogram of wild pear genotypes, similarity index values varied between 0.20-0.83 and a large variation was observed among the genotypes. Present finding may have significant contributions to further studies to be conducted for preservation of gene sources and breeding of wild pear genotype

Sour black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) lives for many years like olives and is known to possess the highest known chromosome number among plant species. Although it is a medicinal aromatic mulberry species with significant economic potential, sour black mulberry is not integrated to modern production system. Sour black mulberry survey was conducted throughout Turkey in 2018-2021 to reveal its potential and cultivation culture in Turkey which is considered as genetic diversity center. Sour More than 200 ancient sour black mulberry trees, known to be from the pre-Republican era, have been identified. The densest ancient mulberry tree was observed in Kayseri Talas, Nevşehir, Ayaş and Orhanlı in Ankara, Erzincan Kemaliye in Erzincan, Eskişehir, Ahlat and Adilcevaz in Bitlis, Gölez village of Çankırı. The regions with the highest fruit production were determined as Ilıca in Kahramanmaraş, Besni in Adıyaman, Çiftehan in Niğde, and Canbazlı village in İzmir. Four antic orchards were observed. It was determined that all trees were monoic, and no male trees were observed. This situation weakens the possibility of Anatolia being the diversity center of sour black mulberry. Contrary to common knowledge, sour black mulberry is a sensitive species to diseases and pests. There is no variety. It has been determined that there are no cultivar(s) with known yield, disease and pest resistance, and the propagation is carried out by local nurseries from a random donor plant. A) The short shelf life of the fruits, B) the difficulty of breaking off the fruit from the branch are the important problems in the integration of sour black mulberry into horticulture production system, and these two characteristics have therefore been determined as the primary breeding issue in sour black mulberry. Önemli ekonomik potansiyele sahip tıbbi aromatik bir tür olmasına rağmen modern bahçeciliğe entegre edilememiştir. Anavatanı olduğu düşünülen Türkiye’de yetiştiricilik kültürü ve potansiyelini belirlemek üzere 2018-2021 yıllarında ülke çapında ekşi karadut sörveyi yapılmıştır. Anıtsal nitelikte, Cumhuriyet öncesinden kalma olduğu bilinen, 200 üzerinde antik ekşi karadut ağacı tespit edilmiştir. Bu ağaçlar genetik olarak özgün olma ihtimali en yüksek popülasyonu oluşturmaktadır. En yoğun antik dut ağacı Kayseri Talas, Nevşehir, Ankara Ayaş İlçesi ve Orhanlı köyü, Erzincan Kemaliye, Eskişehir, Bitlis Ahlat ve Adilcevaz ilçeleri, Çankırı Gölez köyünde gözlenmiştir. Meyve üretimin en fazla yapıldığı bölgeler ise Kahramanmaraş Ilıca, Adıyaman Besni, Niğde Çiftehan, İzmir Canbazlı köyü olarak tespit edilmiştir. Dört adet antik bahçe görülmüştür. Web sayfası kurularak tarihi ekşi karadut fotoğraf ve videoları paylaşılmıştır. Tüm ağaçların monoik olduğu belirlenmiş, erkek ağaç görülmemiştir. Bu durum Anadolu’nun ekşi karadutun anavatanı olma ihtimalini zayıflatmaktadır. Meyve derim zamanının 8-10 hafta olduğu görülmüştür. Yaygın bilginin aksine ekşi karadut hastalık ve zararlılara hassas bir tür olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Çeşit bulunmamaktadır. Verimi, hastalık ve zararlılara dayanıklılık durumu bilinen çeşit veya çeşitlerin mevcut olmadığı, çoğaltımın yerel fidancılar tarafından rastgele seçilen donör bir bitkiden göz alınarak gerçekleştirildiği tespit edilmiştir. A) meyvelerinin raf ömrünün kısa olması, B) meyvelerin daldan kopma güçlüğü ekşi karadutun kapama bahçeciliğe entegresyonu önündeki önemli problemler olarak tespit edilmiştir. Islah çalışmaları ile bu iki karakterde iyileştirme sağlanması gerekmektedir. Güvenilir çoğaltım yöntemlerinin mevcut olmadığı gözlenmiştir. Asırlık ağaçlar genetik ve kültürel miras niteliğinde olup anıt ağaç olarak tescillenmeleri ve koruma altına alınmaları gerekmektedir. Az da olsa Türkiye’nin her bölgesine bu dutun yetişiyor olması, tüketicinin ve yetiştiricinin ekşi karaduta verdiği yüksek değer, ekşi karadut kapama bahçeciliği açısından Türkiye’nin yüksek potansiyeli olduğunu göstermektedir.

Analysis of genetic diversity among genotypes and differentiation among populations are crucial for determination of conservation strategies and one of the best plant breeding approaches. In this study, ISSR markers were used to determine genetic variation and population structure in 23 hulled wheats. Together with control durum wheat and bread wheat registered cultivars, 32 wheat genotypes were analyzed with 14 ISSR markers located throughout the wheat genome. Number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 13 and the polymorphism information content (PIC) value ranged from 0.27 for the UBC-852 to 0.37 for the UBC-824 with an average of 0.33. High levels of polymorphism ratio (100%) were observed for ISSR primers. Mean number of polymorphic alleles (N), expected heterozygosity (He), PIC, number of effective allele (Ne), Shanon’s information index (I) and genetic variation (FST) were determined as 10.21, 0.42, 0.33, 1.78, 0.61 and 0.63, respectively. UPGMA analysis based on dice genetic similarity ranged between 0.981 and 0.112 showing the high genetic diversity among hulled wheat genotypes. Results showed that the ISSR markers provided reliable and reproducible fingerprinting profiles for assessment of population structure and genetic diversity of hulled wheat genotypes. Ortalama polimorfik alel sayısı (N), beklenen heterozigotluk (He), PIC, etkili allel sayısı (Ne), Shanon bilgi indeksi (I) ve genetik varyasyon (FST) sırasıyla 10.21, 0.42, 0.33, 1.78, 0.61 ve 0,63 olarak belirlenmiştir. Dice genetik benzerliğine dayanan UPGMA analizi, kavuzlu buğday genotipleri arasındaki yüksek genetik çeşitliliği göstermiş olup 0.981 ile 0.112 arasında değişmiştir. Sonuçlar, ISSR markörlerinin kavuzlu buğday genotiplerinin popülasyon yapısı ve genetik çeşitliliğinin değerlendirilmesi için güvenilir ve tekrarlanabilir parmak izi profilleri sağladığını göstermiştir. Mevcut çalışmadan elde edilen bu moleküler varyasyonlar, ıslah çalışmaları için ebeveyn seçiminde kullanılabilir.
