1. The Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment in the Excited Fermion Paradigm

Abstract

Extensions of the Standard Model featuring excited fermions present an interesting framework that motivates the search for exotic particles at the LHC. Additionally, these extensions offer potential explanations for the muon's anomalous magnetic moment and other precision observables, shedding light on the energy scale and key parameters of the new theory. Our analysis focuses on the one-loop radiative correction originating from excited lepton doublet and triplet states using the effective Lagrangian approach. The bounds derived from the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be complemented with the ones arising from other observables like the electroweak precision observable $\Delta \rho$ and the signals from direct LHC searches to constraint the effective theory. Our results suggest that the $(g-2)_\mu$ anomaly can be addressed within a very narrow region of the effective theory scale. Consequently, this imposes indirect constraints on the parameter space of excited fermions.

2. Muon g-2 and lepton flavor violation in supersymmetric GUTs

Abstract

We present a class of supersymmetric (SUSY) GUT models that can explain the apparent discrepancy between the SM predictions and experimental values of muon g-2 while providing testable signals for lepton flavor violation in charged lepton decays. Moreover, these models predict LSP neutralino abundance that is compatible with the Planck dark matter bounds. We find that scenarios in the framework of $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ unification, with additional symmetries to explain fermion masses and neutrino oscillations, provide interesting benchmarks for the search of SUSY by correlating a possible manifestation of it in dark matter, rare lepton decays and LHC signals., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures. 3. Vietoris-Rips Complexes of Split-Decomposable Spaces

Abstract

Split-metric decompositions are an important tool in the theory of phylogenetics, particularly because of the link between the tight span and the class of totally decomposable spaces, a generalization of metric trees whose decomposition does not have a ``prime'' component. We use this connection to study the Vietoris-Rips complexes of totally decomposable spaces. In particular, we characterize the homotopy type of the Vietoris-Rips complex of circular decomposable spaces whose metric is monotone. We extend this result to compute the homology of certain non-monotone circular decomposable spaces. We also use the block decomposition of the tight span of a totally decomposable metric to induce a decomposition of the VR complex of a totally decomposable metric.

6. Heat dissipation mechanisms in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor devices revealed by Joule spectroscopy

Abstract

Understanding heating and cooling mechanisms in mesoscopic superconductor-semiconductor hybrid devices is crucial for their application in quantum technologies. Owing to the poor thermal conductivity of typical devices, heating effects can drive superconducting-to-normal phase transitions even at low applied bias, observed as sharp conductance dips through the loss of Andreev excess currents. Tracking such dips across magnetic field, cryostat temperature, and applied microwave power, which constitutes Joule spectroscopy, allows to uncover the underlying cooling bottlenecks in different parts of a device. By applying this technique, we analyze heat dissipation in devices based on full-shell InAs-Al nanowires and reveal that superconducting islands are strongly susceptible to heating as their cooling is limited by the rather inefficient electron-phonon coupling, as opposed to grounded superconductors that primarily cool by quasiparticle diffusion. Our measurements indicate that powers as low as 50-150 pW are able to fully suprpress the superconductivity of an island. Finally, we show that applied microwaves lead to similar heating effects as DC signals, and explore the interplay of the microwave frequency and the effective electron-phonon relaxation time., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

7. Comparison of indicators to evaluate the performance of climate models

Abstract

The evaluation of climate models is a crucial step in climate studies. It consists of quantifying the resemblance of model outputs to reference data to identify models with superior capacity to replicate specific climate variables. Clearly, the choice of the evaluation indicator significantly impacts the results, underscoring the importance of selecting an indicator that properly captures the characteristics of a "good model". This study examines the behavior of six indicators, considering spatial correlation, distribution mean, variance, and shape. A new multi-component measure was selected based on these criteria to assess the performance of 48 CMIP6 models in reproducing the annual seasonal cycle of precipitation, temperature, and teleconnection patterns in Central America. The top six models were determined using multi-criteria methods. It was found that even the best model reproduces one derived climatic variable poorly in this region. The proposed measure and selection method can contribute to enhancing the accuracy of climatological research based on climate models.

Abstract

We explore emerging relationships between the Gromov-Hausdorff distance, Borsuk-Ulam theorems, and Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes. The Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric spaces $X$ and $Y$ can be lower bounded by the distortion of (possibly discontinuous) functions between them. The more these functions must distort the metrics, the larger the Gromov-Hausdorff distance must be. Topology has few tools to obstruct the existence of discontinuous functions. However, an arbitrary function $f\colon X\to Y$ induces a continuous map between their Vietoris-Rips simplicial complexes, where the allowable choices of scale parameters depend on how much the function $f$ distorts distances. We can then use equivariant topology to obstruct the existence of certain continuous maps between Vietoris-Rips complexes. With these ideas we bound how discontinuous an odd map between spheres $S^k\to S^n$ with $k>n$ must be, generalizing a result by Dubins and Schwarz (1981), which is the case $k=n+1$. As an application, we recover or improve upon all of the lower bounds from Lim, M\'emoli, and Smith (2022) on the Gromov-Hausdorff distances between spheres of different dimensions. We also provide new upper bounds on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres of adjacent dimensions.

13. Joule spectroscopy of hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanodevices

Abstract

Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor devices offer highly tunable platforms, potentially suitable for quantum technology applications, that have been intensively studied in the past decade. Here we establish that measurements of the superconductor-to-normal transition originating from Joule heating provide a powerful spectroscopical tool to characterize such hybrid devices. Concretely, we apply this technique to junctions in full-shell Al-InAs nanowires in the Little-Parks regime and obtain detailed information of each lead independently and in a single measurement, including differences in the superconducting coherence lengths of the leads, inhomogeneous covering of the epitaxial shell, and the inverse superconducting proximity effect; all-in-all constituting a unique fingerprint of each device and highlighting the large variability present in these systems. Besides the practical uses, our work also underscores the importance of heating in hybrid devices, an effect that is often overlooked.

Abstract

For $n \geq 2$, the $n$-th curvature set of a metric space $X$ is the set consisting of all $n$-by-$n$ distance matrices of $n$ points sampled from $X$. Curvature sets can be regarded as a geometric analogue of configuration spaces. In this paper we carry out a geometric and topological study of the curvature sets of the unit circle $\mathbb{S}^1$ equipped with the geodesic metric. Via an inductive argument we compute the homology groups of all curvature sets of $\mathbb{S}^1$. We also construct an abstract simplicial complex, called the $n$-th State Complex, whose geometric realization is homeomorphic to the $n$-th Curvature Set of $\mathbb{S}^1$., Comment: Reworked Section 4 to work directly with cluster structures rather than using state matrices. 17. Muon g-2, Neutralino Dark Matter and Stau NLSP

Abstract

We explore the implications of resolving the muon g-2 anomaly in a SU(4)_c x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R model, where the soft supersymmetry breaking scalar and gaugino masses break the left-right (LR) symmetry. A 2 sigma resolution of the anomaly requires relatively light sleptons, chargino and LSP neutralino. The stau turns out to be the NLSP of mass <~ 400 GeV, and the sleptons from the first two families can be as heavy as about 800 GeV. The chargino is also required to be lighter than about 600 GeV to accommodate the muon g-2 solutions consistent with the dark matter relic density constraint. The dominant right-handed nature of the light slepton states suppress the sensitivity of possible signals which can be probed in Run3 experiments at the LHC. We also discuss the impact of accomodating the Higgs boson mass and the vacuum stability of the scalar potential for these solutions. The Higgsinos are heavier than about 4 TeV, and the LSP neutralino has the correct relic density if it is Bino-like. We identify stau-neutralino coannihilation as the dominant mechanism for realizing the desired dark matter relic density, with sneutrino-neutralino coannihiliation playing a minor role. These bino-like dark matter solutions can yield a spin-independent scattering cross-section on the order of 10^{-3} pb which hopefully, can be expected to be tested in the near future.

18. The Four Point Condition: An Elementary Tropicalization of Ptolemy's Inequality

Abstract

Ptolemy's inequality is a classic relationship between the distances among four points in Euclidean space. Another relationship between six distances is the 4-point condition, an inequality satisfied by the lengths of the six paths that join any four points of a metric (or weighted) tree. The 4-point condition also characterizes when a finite metric space can be embedded in such a tree. The curious observer might realize that these inequalities have similar forms: if one replaces addition and multiplication in Ptolemy's inequality with maximum and addition, respectively, one obtains the 4-point condition. We show that this similarity is more than a coincidence. We identify a family of Ptolemaic inequalities in CAT-spaces parametrized by a real number and show that a certain limit involving these inequalities, as the parameter goes to negative infinity, yields the 4-point condition, giving an elementary proof that the latter is the tropicalization of Ptolemy's inequality., Comment: Improved the introduction by adding the history of Ptolemy's inequality and related works, context for tropical geometry, and Gromov hyperbolicity. 19. Cosmology of an Axion-Like Majoron

Abstract

We propose a singlet majoron model that defines an inverse seesaw mechanism in the $\nu$ sector. The majoron $\phi$ has a mass $m_\phi\approx 0.5$ eV and a coupling to the $\tau$ lepton similar to the one to neutrinos. In the early universe it is initially in thermal equilibrium, then it decouples at $T\approx 500$ GeV and contributes with just $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.026$ during BBN. At $T=26$ keV (final stages of BBN) a primordial magnetic field induces resonant $\gamma \leftrightarrow \phi$ oscillations that transfer 6% of the photon energy into majorons, implying $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.55$ and a 4.7% increase in the baryon to photon ratio. At $T\approx m_\phi$ the majoron enters in thermal contact with the heaviest neutrino and it finally decays into $\nu \bar \nu$ pairs near recombination, setting $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.85$. The boost in the expansion rate at later times may relax the Hubble tension (we obtain $H_0=(71.4\pm 0.5)$ km/s/Mpc), while the processes $ \nu\bar \nu \leftrightarrow \phi$ suppress the free streaming of these particles and make the model consistent with large scale structure observations. Its lifetime and the fact that it decays into neutrinos instead of photons lets this axion-like majoron avoid the strong bounds that affect other axion-like particles of similar mass and coupling to photons., Comment: 23 pages, version to appear in JCAP

28. Curvature Sets Over Persistence Diagrams

Abstract

We study a family of invariants of compact metric spaces that combines the Curvature Sets defined by Gromov in the 1980s with Vietoris-Rips Persistent Homology. For given integers $k\geq 0$ and $n\geq 1$ we consider the dimension $k$ Vietoris-Rips persistence diagrams of \emph{all} subsets of a given metric space with cardinality at most $n$. We call these invariants \emph{persistence sets} and denote them as $\mathbf{D}_{n,k}^\textrm{VR}$. We establish that (1) computing these invariants is often significantly more efficient than computing the usual Vietoris-Rips persistence diagrams, (2) these invariants have very good discriminating power and, in many cases, capture information that is imperceptible through standard Vietoris-Rips persistence diagrams, and (3) they enjoy stability properties. We precisely characterize some of them in the case of spheres and surfaces with constant curvature using a generalization of Ptolemy's inequality. We also identify a rich family of metric graphs for which $\mathbf{D}_{4,1}^\textrm{VR}$ fully recovers their homotopy type by studying split-metric decompositions. Along the way we prove some useful properties of Vietoris-Rips persistence diagrams using Mayer-Vietoris sequences. These yield a geometric algorithm for computing the Vietoris-Rips persistence diagram of a space $X$ with cardinality $2k+2$ with quadratic time complexity as opposed to the much higher cost incurred by the usual algebraic algorithms relying on matrix reduction., Comment: Added Example 4.15 (in Section 4.3) to show that persistence sets and persistent homology distinguish different spaces, and added more running time comparisons to Section 4.4

Abstract

We explore $t-b-\tau$ Yukawa unification (YU) in a supersymmetric $SU(4)_c \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R $ model without imposing a discrete left-right (L-R) symmetry. A number of interesting solutions that are compatible with $t-b-\tau$ YU, LSP neutralino dark matter (DM), and LHC and other experimental constraints are identified. In particular, they include gluino-neutralino and stau-neutralino co-annihilation scenarios, where the NLSP gluino mass can range from 1-3 TeV. Higgsino-like dark matter solutions are also identified for which gluino masses can approach 5 TeV or so. This scenario will be tested at LHC Run-3 and its future upgrades.

Abstract

The evaluation of climate models is a crucial step in climate studies. It consists of quantifying the resemblance of model outputs to reference data to identify models with superior capacity to replicate specific climate variables. Clearly, the choice of the evaluation indicator significantly impacts the results, underscoring the importance of selecting an indicator that properly captures the characteristics of a "good model". This study examines the behaviour of six indicators, considering spatial correlation, distribution mean, variance and shape. Monthly data for precipitation, temperature and teleconnection patterns in Central America were utilized in the analysis. A new multicomponent measure was selected based on these criteria to assess the performance of 32 CMIP6 models in reproducing the annual seasonal cycle of these variables. The top six models were determined using multicriteria methods. It was found that even the best model reproduces one derived climatic variable poorly in this region. Abstract

Severe aortic stenosis (AS) coexists with coronary artery disease (CAD) in approximately 50% of patients. The preferred treatment is combined surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) along with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has emerged as a viable alternative. This study sought to compare the outcomes of PCI + TAVR vs CABG + SAVR. This national multicenter retrospective study in Spain involved patients with severe AS and CAD treated between 2018 and 2021. Patients underwent either PCI + TAVR or CABG + SAVR and were compared. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality and stroke at 1 year. Propensity score analysis was performed to mitigate baseline differences. Of the 1,342 included patients, 625 (46.6%) underwent PCI + TAVR, and 713 (53.1%) underwent CABG + SAVR. Patients in the percutaneous arm were older (age 81.6 ± 5.8 years vs 72.1 ± 7 years; P < 0.001), had a higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease (40.6% vs 14.9%; P < 0.001), and had higher Society of Thoracic Surgeons risk scores (4.3% [interquartile range (Q1-Q3): 2.8-6.4] vs 2.2% [Q1-Q3: 1.4-3.3]; P < 0.001). Technical success rates were 96% for PCI + TAVR and 98.4% for CABG + SAVR (P = 0.008), with similar periprocedural mortality (0.8% vs 0.7%; P = 0.999). However, the mortality + stroke rate at 30 days was higher in the CABG + SAVR group compared with PCI + TAVR, both in the unmatched (12.2% vs 4.7%; P = 0.005) and matched cohorts (8.8% vs 4.5%; P = 0.002), persisting at the 1-year follow-up. Despite a lower baseline risk, CABG + SAVR in patients with severe AS and CAD was associated with a higher rate of death and stroke compared with PCI + TAVR, highlighting the necessity for a large, randomized analysis. Abstract

The overarching vision of Society 5.0 seeks to integrate technology to enhance quality of life and address social issues, with the primary goal of creating human-centered communities, which nowadays represent the inhabitants of smart cities. In this context, this work addresses the design of a modular strategic platform for the smart supervision of public expenditure, to be used by the Directorate of Information, Analysis, and Immediate Reaction (DIARI) of the General Comptroller of the Republic (CGR) of Colombia as a significant contribution towards the country's transition into Society 5.0. The design was performed by conducting a detailed literature review on fiscal control; performing a comprehensive analysis of the legal, organizational, and technological aspects of the country and the CGR; and developing six functional modules focused on topics such as continuous learning, strategic decision making, distinctive value, strategic achievements, capacity building, and organization, within a three-year implementation plan, through a participatory approach. This plan aims to integrate the platform to enable real-time monitoring, early detection of irregularities, and increased transparency in the management of data and public resources; since the start of the operation of the strategic platform in 2024, the DIARI increased the number of alerts generated by 29% over a three-month period with respect to the year 2023. The strategic platform for the DIARI of the CGR is useful for smart cities and the transition into Society 5.0 since it ensures efficient public expenditure management, enhancing transparency and citizen empowerment through modern technologies, data analytics, and active participation in governance processes.
