A new record of the genus Veneriserva Rossi, 1984 (Polychaeta: Dorvilleidae) is reported, as an endosymbiont in the coelom of the polychaete Laetmonice producta Grube, 1877 (Aphroditidae) in the eastern Weddell Sea and off King George Island (Southern Ocean, Antarctica). The specimens studied were very similar to Veneriserva pygoclava Rossi, 1984; however, due to the greater morphological variability and larger dimensions of our specimens, as well as different host species and geographic locations, a new sub-species, V. pygoclava meridionalis, was erected. A total of 842 specimens of L. producta were examined, 163 of which hosted 209 symbionts (183 in the Weddell Sea samples and 26 in the King George Island samples). Symbiont prevalence was higher in the Weddell Sea samples, and increased with depth (max. 51% at stn 14, 850 m depth). Symbiont intensity was equal to one for 78% and to two for 19.6% of all hosts examined; a maximum of six symbionts per single host was observed. Mean symbiont density was equal to 0.36 and 0.07 for the Weddell Sea and King George Island host populations, respectively. A weak linear relationship was found between symbiont and host size. Eight symbiont specimens (all found at a single station, 850 m depth) were bearing eggs, ranging between 10 and 200 µm in diameter, while 13 specimens were observed in regeneration of the posterior part, suggesting the occurrence of both sexual and asexual reproduction. The way of feeding is still not clear; reduction of the jaw apparatus suggests a parasitic host–symbiont relationship, however, no evident damage was observed in the tissues of the host. These results point out that occurrence of polychaete endoparasites in large aphroditids may be a more frequent and widespread phenomenon than previously believed, and that more attention should be paid to this aspect also in temperate and tropical aphroditid species.

The Polychaeta “Sedentaria” collected in Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) during the Second Italian Oceanographic Antarctic Expedition (1989–90) have been studied. A total of 1518 specimens have been examined and 43 species, belonging to 14 families, have been identified. A new species of Oweniidae, Myriochele antarctica and a new subspecies of Spionidae, Scolelepis eltaninae nudipalpa are described. Terebellidae was the most important family in number of species, Spionidae, Oweniidae and Orbiniidae in number of individuals. More than 60% of the species are endemic to Antarctic and sub-Antarctic areas.

An integrated low voltage RF receiver for digital satellite radio is presented. It contains all the basic building blocks from the low noise amplifier (LNA) to the baseband buffer and two phase-locked loops (PLLs) which provide the RF and the intermediate frequency (IF) local oscillator signals. Innovative solutions for critical blocks such as the LNA, the IF buffer, the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), etc., as well as new arrangements for bias circuits have been adopted which greatly increase circuit performance. Moreover, 2.4 V regulated power supplies with power down capability have also been included. The receiver needs a small number of external components that are principally the RF image filter and the surface acoustic wave (SAW) channel filter. It achieves a maximum gain of 120 dB and a noise figure of 5 dB. The internal regulators are set to 2.4 V and ensure correct operation with an external power supply varying from 2.7 to 5.5 V. The receiver was integrated in a high performance 20 GHz silicon bipolar technology. Its die size is 18 mm/sup 2/ and it needs a quiescent current of 75 mA.

Here is presented the development of the new BCD800 platform which conjugates 3.3V CMOS logic, 5/25/30V power devices and a 800V nLDMOS in a 0.35µm technology node. LV components can be placed into a floating pocket which can be referred up to 650V, furthermore this process features an innovative lateral junction isolation module obtained by a boron-doped poly-filled deep trench with great advantages in terms of performances and area saving. The process industrialization has been demonstrated and a fully functional test vehicle is available in the form of a single-chip High Voltage Smart Gate Driver for half bridges.

The paper describes a computational method to assess time response of critical life program units, presents some validation results and gives some implementation guidelines for a related tool. A complete environment currently used in industrial applications, has been used to compare software timeliness, computed by the proposed method, versus time measurement, typically performed along software development process.

A new species of Oweniidae from the Ross Sea (Antarctica) is described and compared with the remaining species of the genus Myriochele from the Antarctic seas. The authors also discuss the difficulty of detecting the shape of uncini (considered as an important diagnostic character) by optical microscopy; they propose a key to Antarctic Oweniidae based on characters easier to observe than uncini.

Wireless LAN systems target wireless communications for demanding multimedia applications in several types of environments. While meeting many transmitter and receiver specifications, designing a low-cost, efficient and portable system covering this whole design space becomes infeasible. Therefore we developed a methodology that translates this multitude of requirements into a system covering a part of the design space, but still attractive from an application point of view and with an optimal performance/cost-ratio. As a result, we show that there is only a limited set of applications that can be covered by a 5-GHz wireless LAN mobile terminal with 16 dBm average output power. Instead a mobile terminal with 23 dBm average output power can work in more scenarios. Further we show that implementing a more efficient power amplifier architecture has limited impact on the system efficiency in the 16-dBm system-on-chip (SoC) case, however this becomes crucial for integration of a 23-dBm mobile terminal using a system-in-a-package (SiP) approach.

Some concepts and tools used to verify the time boundaries of sequential software for hard-real-time applications are based on program control flow and the execution time of instructions or blocks. The paper extends a structural approach from sequential to distributed software. It is conceptually and practically based on timed Concurrent Graphs, TCGs, which extend the concept of sequential program d-graphs. The properties of the concurrent exploration of a 'system' of timed concurrent d-graphs are considered, and TCGs are shown to be useful tools for predicting the initial and the steady state worst temporal behaviours of life-time critical distributed static or dynamic systems of messaging only processes, in the maximum pure parallel model. The semantics of Ada-like tasking and communication models are considered. Also, obstacles to predictability are identified and predictable solutions are provided. The proposed approach holds for different tasking and communication models, as shown by an included CSP-like case-study. >

A case of male breast carcinoma in a very young subject (seventeen years old) is described. Breast carcinoma in male is infrequent, and at a so young age it is really rare. The patient was subjected to "Patey" mastectomy with removing the lymph nodes of the breast with the tumor, and subcutaneous mastectomy at the opposite side breast. As agreed with the oncologist other therapy was carried out.

The authors explore the correlation between the neuroradiologic and clinical patterns of "subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy" (SAE) or Binswanger's disease. The typical neuroradiologic pattern has been found in 62 of the 1804 CT scans of the department's archive. Available patients were enrolled for neuropsychologic evaluation. The authors point out that there is no correlation whatever between severity of the CT pattern and findings of psychological decline. Therefore SAE may be considered merely a neuroradiologic pattern. The discrepancy between neuroradiologic and clinical pattern depends on the individual history of every single patient as well as on the quality of the neuronal cells involved in vascular pathology. It may in fact be thought that the injury to command neurones plays a fundamental role in bringing about the psychopathologic picture.

Results of personal experience of the application of enteral nutrition in a group of patients (21) submitted to surgery for gastric cancer are reported. Enteral nutrition proved easy to perform, provided a significant improvement in some of the parameters considered in the study, was without significant complications and presented acceptable management costs.

This paper proposes a methodology relating to the design and implementation of code changes in the code modification phase of the software maintenance cycle. This methodology aims at maintaining the structurization of the control-flow. Also illustrated are the characteristics of a tool which supports the methodology proposed and calculates the variation of entropy, considered as the complexity of the control-flow, induced in a program by a maintenance operation.

In the present paper the authors aim to make a contribution towards solving the problems regarding the definition of module testing effort prediction metrics. To this end they firstly define a set of metrics for the evaluation of the complexity of program paths, and then propose a linear combination of these matrics as a guide for the definition of path testing adequacy criteria. Finally, with reference to a specific path testing strategy, they show these metrics make it possible to define and measure module testability.

The present paper deals with a strategy, recently outlined by the authors, for the automatic insertion of recovery points in systems of processes that communicate by message passing only. The insertion of state restoration requests is analitically approached and calibrated to the process communication rate and the system fault rate. The extension to synchronous-asynchronous environments and to system communications is also presented.

This paper deals with the behavior of programs in time. It indicates some constraints for the low-level design and coding of programs for use in critical applications, and defines an algebraic method for the static evaluation of the response time of a critical program and proposes a tool for the temporal verification of a critical task in a software engineering laboratory.

In order to characterize neurological, intellectual and behavioral sequelae better after surgical treatment of brain abscess in childhood, 32 children were studied over a 10-year time span after treatment of a brain abscess. Depending on the clinical condition, surgical treatment consisted of simple aspiration through a burr hole or of total excision after craniotomy. There were only 3 postoperative deaths (9%). The scheduled time for long-term follow-up was 3 years after surgery. The patient assessment included information concerning the presence of seizures, accurate neurological examination, an EEG, and a battery of intellectual tests to evaluate the presence of behavioral-mental deficits. Late seizures developed in 7 of the 29 survivors. Five patients presented permanent hemiparesis after surgical treatment. It is noteworthy that the intellectual impairment observed was more severe in younger patients, while the behavioral disturbances were more marked in school-age children.

In order to investigate the role of EEG in minor head traumata in the pediatric age, EEG and CT scan findings were compared in a series of 103 consecutive cases of children hospitalized within 24 h after head trauma. The EEGs were classified as normal in 50 patients, borderline in 10 patients, and abnormal in 43 patients. CT scan showed contusion in 6 patients and extracerebral hematoma in 4. All cases of abnormal CT scans were reported for patients with frankly abnormal EEG findings. In contrast, no pathological findings were found in CT scans for patients with normal EEG. The data suggest that EEG findings can play a major role in the diagnostic workup of patients with minor head traumata. Specifically, in the case of asymptomatic patients with normal EEG findings, it is likely that the CT scan will also be normal.

Rehabilitation by means of periodic irrigation is an easy-to-use method that is generally well accepted by the patient. By "giving up" an hour less a day, or better still every 48 hours, the patient can avoid the inconvenience of numerous, continual and uncontrollable evacuations. In confirmation of previous experiments, no significant differences were observed concerning early rehabilitation (up to 10 years after the operation). Irrigation has also been shown to have few negative aspects.

The author shows that formula (9) of the above mentioned paper (see ibid., vol.C-33, p.113-124, (1984)) is erroneous. A new solution is proposed, and its congruency is shown. >

Palazzo Donn'Anna come teatro della Magnificenza

Il saggio ricostruisce le vicende della villa Odescalchi fuori porta del Popolo a Roma, che oggi non esiste più, appartenuta dalla fine del Seicento a Livio Odescalchi, committente di nuovi lavori. L’approfondimento delle trasformazioni della vigna e dei suoi edifici ha consentito di fare nuove considerazioni sulla committenza di Livio e sull’architetto di fiducia Carlo Buratti che lavorò per lui anche in questo cantiere. La villa, letta come una sorta di emblematica sintesi “arcadica” tra committente, architetto e tipologia d’intervento, ha offerto nuovi spunti per avvalorare l’interpretazione critica che ha individuato la premessa all’ondata classicistica promossa a Roma da Clemente XII proprio negli anni a cavallo tra Seicento e Settecento, intorno alla linea formativa che fa capo alla scuola di Carlo Fontana. Si è cercato, in tal senso, di riconsiderare il contributo di personaggi, forse finora non sufficientemente approfonditi dalla storiografia, tra i quali appunto Livio Odescalchi che, attraverso scelte programmatiche di una committenza misurata e raziocinante, diede un apporto determinante al distacco dal barocco in campo architettonico.

Viene condotta un'attenta analisi documentaria con riferimento alla formazione e trasformazione della piazza della Seta a San Leucio tra la fine del Settecento e gli inizi dell'Ottocento, nel contesto dell'ampio programma urbanistico di Ferdinando IV, relativo alla città operaia e al modello urbanistico filantropico adottato dal sovrano e dal suo architetto Francesco Collecini. In particolare, dalla parte eseguita del progetto di città 'ideale' operaia si comprende come, prima dei tristi eventi rivoluzionari, il re fosse propenso ad attuare in questo caso un esperimento di 'socialismo illuminato'. Nello studio si procede quindi ad una lettura storico-tipologica del sito e dell'edificio detto "Trattoria", anche sulla base di testimonianze archivistiche inedite.

Nella cultura architettonica francese del secondo Settecento, l'abbé Marc-Antoine Laugier spicca per l'influenza esercitata a scala europea, sebbene i suoi contributi debbano non poco alle idee dell'abbé de Cordemoy. Ma nel tempo che trascorre tra la pubblicazione dell' " Essai..." e quella delle "Observations sur l'Architecture", significative vicende editoriali e biografiche mutano il contesto in cui maturano le sue personali vedute sul tema.

La Congregazione camaldolese di Monte Corona conobbe il periodo di massima espansione fra il XVI e il XVII secolo, quando si diffuse anche in Campania dove si susseguirono ben sei fondazioni, dal 1577 al 1687, che si costituirono nella “Nazione Napoletana”, le uniche dell’Italia meridionale. Del primo complesso dell’Incoronata a Sant’Angelo a Scala, sorto per volontà del futuro papa Paolo IV Carafa, rimangono i ruderi; d’altro canto dell’eremo di Maiori si conserva solo la chiesa, rifatta nell’Ottocento. Il solo edificio religioso rimane anche a Torre del Greco, ma di particolare interesse formale, riedificato nel Settecento. Un disegno ottocentesco testimonia inoltre la conformazione dell’intero complesso scomparso. Dall’esame di quest’ultimo e degli eremi di Vico Equense - che conserva l’impianto delle celle e della foresteria - e di Nola - integro in tutte le sue parti - meno noti rispetto alla “casa madre” napoletana, e con un’adesione alla cultura gesuitica, emergono dati interessanti ai fini di una sistematizzazione degli eremi camaldolesi, da confrontare con gli altri esistenti in Italia.
