Search

Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. Gamma-ray bursts are the most energetic known explosions. Despite fading rapidly, they allow to measure redshift and important properties of their host-galaxies. We report the photometric and spectroscopic study of GRB 160203A and its host-galaxy. Fine-structure absorption lines, detected in the afterglow at different epochs, allow us to investigate variability due to the strong fading background source. We obtained two optical to near-infrared spectra of the afterglow with X-shooter on ESO/VLT, 18 min and 5.7 hrs after the burst, allowing us to investigate temporal changes of fine-structure absorption lines. We measured HI column density log N(HI/cm-2)=21.75+/-0.10, and several heavy-element ions along the GRB sight-line in the host-galaxy: SiII,AlII,AlIII,CII,NiII,SiIV,CIV,ZnII,FeII, and FeII and SiII fine structure transitions from energetic levels excited by the afterglow, at a redshift z=3.518. We measured [M/H]TOT=-0.78+/-0.13 and [Zn/Fe]FIT=0.69+/-0.15, representing the total(dust-corrected) metallicity and dust depletion, respectively. We detected additional intervening systems along the line of sight at z=1.03,z=1.26,z=1.98,z=1.99,z=2.20 and z=2.83. We could not measure significant variability in the fine-structure lines throughout all the observations and determined an upper limit for the GRB distance from the absorber of d<300 pc, adopting the canonical UV pumping scenario. However, we note that the quality of our data is not sufficient to conclusively rule out collisions as an alternative mechanism. GRB 160203A belongs to a growing sample of GRBs with medium resolution spectroscopy, provided by the Swift/X-shooter legacy program, which enables detailed investigation of the interstellar medium in high-redshift GRB host-galaxies. Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

One of the surprising early findings with JWST has been the discovery of a strong "roll-over" or a softening of the absorption edge of Ly$\alpha$ in a large number of galaxies at ($z\gtrsim 6$), in addition to systematic offsets from photometric redshift estimates and fundamental galaxy scaling relations. This has been interpreted as damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption (DLA) wings from high column densities of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI), signifying major gas accretion events in the formation of these galaxies. To explore this new phenomenon systematically, we assemble the JWST/NIRSpec PRImordial gas Mass AssembLy (PRIMAL) legacy survey of 494 galaxies at $z=5.5-13.4$. We characterize this benchmark sample in full and spectroscopically derive the galaxy redshifts, metallicities, star-formation rates, and ultraviolet slopes. We define a new diagnostic, the Ly$\alpha$ damping parameter $D_{\rm Ly\alpha}$ to measure and quantify the Ly$\alpha$ emission strength, HI fraction in the IGM, or local HI column density for each source. The JWST-PRIMAL survey is based on the spectroscopic DAWN JWST Archive (DJA-Spec). All the software, reduced spectra, and spectroscopically derived quantities and catalogs are made publicly available in dedicated repositories. The fraction of strong galaxy DLAs are found to be in the range $65-95\%$ at $z>5.5$. The fraction of strong Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) is found to increase with decreasing redshift, in qualitative agreement with previous observational results, and are predominantly associated with low-metallicity and UV faint galaxies. By contrast, strong DLAs are observed in galaxies with a variety of intrinsic physical properties. Our results indicate that strong DLAs likely reflect a particular early assembly phase of reionization-era galaxies, at which point they are largely dominated by pristine HI gas accretion. The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is a key period of cosmological history in which the intergalactic medium (IGM) underwent a major phase change from being neutral to almost completely ionized. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are luminous and unique probes of their environments that can be used to study the timeline for the progression of the EoR. Here we present a detailed analysis of the ESO Very Large Telescope X-shooter spectrum of GRB 210905A, which resides at a redshift of z ~ 6.3. We focus on estimating the fraction of neutral hydrogen, xHI, on the line of sight to the host galaxy of GRB 210905A by fitting the shape of the Lyman-alpha damping wing of the afterglow spectrum. The X-shooter spectrum has a high signal to noise ratio, but the complex velocity structure of the host galaxy limits the precision of our conclusions. The statistically preferred model suggests a low neutral fraction with an 3-sigma upper limit of xHI < 0.15, indicating that the IGM around the GRB host galaxy is mostly ionized. We explore the fraction of radio loud quasars in the eHAQ+GAIA23 sample, which contains quasars from the High A(V) Quasar (HAQ) Survey, the Extended High A(V) Quasar (eHAQ) Survey, and the Gaia quasar survey. All quasars in this sample have been found using a near-infrared color selection of target candidates that have otherwise been missed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We implemented a redshift-dependent color cut in g-i to select red quasars in the sample and divided them into redshift bins, while using a nearest-neighbors algorithm to control for luminosity and redshift differences between our red quasar sample and a selected blue sample from the SDSS. Within each bin, we cross-matched the quasars to the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters (FIRST) survey and determined the radio-detection fraction. We find similar radio-detection fractions for red and blue quasars within 1 sigma, independent of redshift. This disagrees with what has been found in the literature for red quasars in SDSS. It should be noted that the fraction of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars in red SDSS quasars is about five times lower than in our sample. BAL quasars have been observed to be more frequently radio quiet than other quasars, therefore the difference in BAL fractions could explain the difference in radio-detection fraction. The observed higher proportion of BAL quasars in our dataset relative to the SDSS sample, along with the higher rate of radio detections, indicates an association of the redness of quasars and the inherent BAL fraction within the overall quasar population. This finding highlights the need to explore the underlying factors contributing to both the redness and the frequency of BAL quasars, as they appear to be interconnected phenomena., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. The existence of a secondary (in addition to compact object mergers) source of heavy element ($r$-process) nucleosynthesis, the core-collapse of rapidly-rotating and highly-magnetized massive stars, has been suggested by both simulations and indirect observational evidence. Here, we probe a predicted signature of $r$-process enrichment, a late-time ($\gtrsim 40$ days post-burst) distinct red color, in observations of GRB-supernovae (GRB-SNe) which are linked to these massive star progenitors. We present optical to near-IR color measurements of four GRB-SNe at $z \lesssim 0.4$, extending out to $> 500$ days post-burst, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and large-aperture ground-based telescopes. Comparison of our observations to models indicates that GRBs 030329, 100316D and 130427A are consistent with both no enrichment and producing $0.01 - 0.15 M_{\odot}$ of $r$-process material if there is a low amount of mixing between the inner $r$-process ejecta and outer SN layers. GRB 190829A is not consistent with any models with $r$-process enrichment $\geq 0.01 M_{\odot}$. Taken together the sample of GRB-SNe indicates color diversity at late times. Our derived yields from GRB-SNe may be underestimated due to $r$-process material hidden in the SN ejecta (potentially due to low mixing fractions) or the limits of current models in measuring $r$-process mass. The NASA's Double-Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) was a unique planetary defence and technology test mission, the first of its kind. The main spacecraft of the DART mission impacted the target asteroid Dimorphos, a small moon orbiting asteroid (65803) Didymos, on 2022 September 26. The impact brought up a mass of ejecta which, together with the direct momentum transfer from the collision, caused an orbital period change of 33 +/- 1 minutes, as measured by ground-based observations. We report here the outcome of the optical monitoring campaign of the Didymos system from the Danish 1.54 m telescope at La Silla around the time of impact. The observations contributed to the determination of the changes in the orbital parameters of the Didymos-Dimorphos system, as reported by arXiv:2303.02077, but in this paper we focus on the ejecta produced by the DART impact. We present photometric measurements from which we remove the contribution from the Didymos-Dimorphos system using a H-G photometric model. Using two photometric apertures we determine the fading rate of the ejecta to be 0.115 +/- 0.003 mag/d (in a 2" aperture) and 0.086 +/- 0.003 mag/d (5") over the first week post-impact. After about 8 days post-impact we note the fading slows down to 0.057 +/- 0.003 mag/d (2" aperture) and 0.068 +/- 0.002 mag/d (5"). We include deep-stacked images of the system to illustrate the ejecta evolution during the first 18 days, noting the emergence of dust tails formed from ejecta pushed in the anti-solar direction, and measuring the extent of the particles ejected sunward to be at least 4000 km., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. Much of what is known of the chemical composition of the universe is based on emission line spectra from star forming galaxies. Emission-based inferences are, nevertheless, model-dependent and they are dominated by light from luminous star forming regions. An alternative and sensitive probe of the metallicity of galaxies is through absorption lines imprinted on the luminous afterglow spectra of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs) from neutral material within their host galaxy. We present results from a JWST/NIRSpec programme to investigate for the first time the relation between the metallicity of neutral gas probed in absorption by GRB afterglows and the metallicity of the star forming regions for the same host galaxy sample. Using an initial sample of eight GRB host galaxies at z=2.1-4.7, we find a tight relation between absorption and emission line metallicities when using the recently proposed $\hat{R}$ metallicity diagnostic (+/-0.2dex). This agreement implies a relatively chemically-homogeneous multi-phase interstellar medium, and indicates that absorption and emission line probes can be directly compared. However, the relation is less clear when using other diagnostics, such as R23 and R3. We also find possible evidence of an elevated N/O ratio in the host galaxy of GRB090323 at z=3.58, consistent with what has been seen in other $z>4$ galaxies. Ultimate confirmation of an enhanced N/O ratio and of the relation between absorption and emission line metallicities will require a more direct determination of the emission line metallicity via the detection of temperature-sensitive auroral lines in our GRB host galaxy sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 24 pages, 15 figures

GRB~230812B is a bright and relatively nearby ($z =0.36$) long gamma-ray burst (GRB) that has generated significant interest in the community and has thus been observed over the entire electromagnetic spectrum. We report over 80 observations in X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and sub-millimeter bands from the GRANDMA (Global Rapid Advanced Network for Multi-messenger Addicts) network of observatories and from observational partners. Adding complementary data from the literature, we then derive essential physical parameters associated with the ejecta and external properties (i.e. the geometry and environment) of the GRB and compare with other analyses of this event. We spectroscopically confirm the presence of an associated supernova, SN2023pel, and we derive a photospheric expansion velocity of v $\sim$ 17$\times10^3$ km s$^{-1}$. We analyze the photometric data first using empirical fits of the flux and then with full Bayesian Inference. We again strongly establish the presence of a supernova in the data, with a maximum (pseudo-)bolometric luminosity of $5.75 \times 10^{42}$ erg/s, at $15.76^{+0.81}_{-1.21}$ days (in the observer frame) after the trigger, with a half-max time width of 22.0 days. We compare these values with those of SN1998bw, SN2006aj, and SN2013dx. Our best-fit model favours a very low density environment ($\log_{10}({n_{\rm ISM}/{\rm cm}^{-3}}) = -2.38^{+1.45}_{-1.60}$) and small values for the jet's core angle $\theta_{\rm core} = 1.54^{+1.02}_{-0.81} \ \rm{deg}$ and viewing angle $\theta_{\rm obs} = 0.76^{+1.29}_{-0.76} \ \rm{deg}$. GRB 230812B is thus one of the best observed afterglows with a distinctive supernova bump.

We report on further observations of the field of the quasar Q1218+0832. Geier et al. 2019 presented the discovery of the quasar resulting from a search for quasars reddened and dimmed by dust in foreground damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs). The DLA is remarkable by having a very large HI column density close to 10^22 cm^-2 . Its dust extinction curve shows the 2175 AA bump known from the Local Group. It also shows absorption from cold gas exemplified by CI and CO molecules. For this paper, we present narrow-band observations of the field of Q1218+0832 and also use an archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image to search for the galaxy counterpart of the DLA. No emission from the DLA galaxy is found in either the narrow-band imaging or in the HST image. In the HST image, we could probe down to an impact parameter of 0.3 arcsec and a 3-sigma detection limit of 26.8 mag per arcsec^2. In the narrow-band image, we probed down to a 0 arcsec impact parameter and detected nothing down to a 3-sigma detection limit of about 3x10-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 . We did detect a bright Lyman-alpha emitter 59 arcsec south of Q1218+0832 with a flux of 3x10^-16 erg s^-1 cm^-2 . We conclude that the DLA galaxy must be located at a very small impact parameter (<0.3 arcsec, 2.5 kpc) or it is optically dark. The chemical enrichment of dust and metals are vital processes in constraining the star formation history of the universe. Previously, the dust masses of high-redshift star-forming galaxies have been determined through their far-infrared continuum, however, equivalent, and potentially simpler, approaches to determining the metal masses have yet to be explored at $z\gtrsim 2$. Here, we present a new method of inferring the metal mass in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies out to $z\approx 8$, using the far-infrared [CII]$-158\mu$m emission line as a proxy. We calibrated the [CII]-to-$M_{\rm Z,ISM}$ conversion factor based on a benchmark observational sample at $z\approx 0$, in addition to gamma-ray burst sightlines at $z>2$ and cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies at $z\approx 0$ and $z\approx 6$. We found a universal scaling across redshifts of $\log (M_{\rm Z,ISM}/M_\odot) = \log (L_{\rm [CII]}/L_\odot) - 0.45,$ with a 0.4 dex scatter, which is constant over more than two orders of magnitude in metallicity. We applied this scaling to recent surveys for [CII] in galaxies at $z\gtrsim 2$ and determined the fraction of metals retained in the gas-phase ISM, $M_{\rm Z,ISM} / M_\star$, as a function of redshift showing that an increasing fraction of metals reside in the ISM of galaxies at higher redshifts. We place further constraints on the cosmic metal mass density in the ISM ($\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM}$) at $z\approx 5$ and $\approx 7$, yielding $\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM} = 6.6^{+13}_{-4.3}\times 10^{-7}\,M_\odot\, {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ ($z\approx 5$) and $\Omega_{\rm Z,ISM} = 2.0^{+3.5}_{-1.3}\times 10^{-7}\,M_\odot\, {\rm Mpc}^{-3}$ ($z\approx 7$). These results are consistent with the expected metal yields from the integrated star formation history at the respective redshifts. The chemical enrichment of dust and metals in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies throughout cosmic time is one of the key driving processes of galaxy evolution. Here we study the evolution of the gas-phase metallicities, dust-to-gas (DTG), and dust-to-metal (DTM) ratios of 36 star-forming galaxies at $1.7 < z < 6.3$ probed by gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We compile all GRB-selected galaxies with intermediate (R=7000) to high (R>40,000) resolution spectroscopic data for which at least one refractory (e.g. Fe) and one volatile (e.g. S or Zn) element have been detected at S/N>3. This is to ensure that accurate abundances and dust depletion patterns can be obtained. We first derive the redshift evolution of the dust-corrected, absorption-line based gas-phase metallicity [M/H]$_{\rm tot}$ in these galaxies, for which we determine a linear relation with redshift ${\rm [M/H]_{tot}}(z) = (-0.21\pm 0.04)z -(0.47\pm 0.14)$. We then examine the DTG and DTM ratios as a function of redshift and through three orders of magnitude in metallicity, quantifying the relative dust abundance both through the direct line-of-sight visual extinction $A_V$ and the derived depletion level. We use a novel method to derive the DTG and DTM mass ratios for each GRB sightline, summing up the mass of all the depleted elements in the dust-phase. We find that the DTG and DTM mass ratios are both strongly correlated with the gas-phase metallicity and show a mild evolution with redshift as well. While these results are subject to a variety of caveats related to the physical environments and the narrow pencil-beam sightlines through the ISM probed by the GRBs, they provide strong implications for studies of dust masses to infer the gas and metal content of high-redshift galaxies, and particularly demonstrate the large offset from the average Galactic value in the low-metallicity, high-redshift regime., Comment: Accepted in A&A

The physical processes which make a galaxy a Lyman Alpha Emitter have been extensively studied for the past 25 years. However, the correlations between physical and morphological properties of galaxies and the strength of the Ly$\alpha$ emission line are still highly debated. Therefore, we investigate the correlations between the rest-frame Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width and stellar mass, star formation rate, dust reddening, metallicity, age, half-light semi-major axis, S\'ersic index and projected axis ratio in a sample of 1578 galaxies in the redshift range $2 \leq z \leq 7.9$ from the GOODS-S, UDS and COSMOS fields. From the large sample of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) in the dataset we find that LAEs are typically common main sequence star forming galaxies which show stellar mass $ \leq 10^9 \text{M}_{\odot}$, star formation rate $ \leq 10^{0.5} \text{M}_{\odot}/\text{yr}$, $E(B-V) \leq 0.2$ and half-light semi-major axis $\leq 1 \text{kpc}$. Building on these findings we develop a new method based on Random Forest (i.e. a Machine Learning classifier) in order to select galaxies which have the highest probability of being Ly$\alpha$ emitters. When applied to a population in the redshift range $z \in [2.5, 4.5]$, our classifier holds a $(80 \pm 2)\%$ accuracy and $(73 \pm 4)\%$ precision. At higher redshifts ($z \in [4.5, 6]$), we obtain a $73\%$ accuracy and a $80\%$ precision. These results highlight it is possible to overcome the current limitations in assembling large samples of LAEs by making informed predictions that can be used for planning future large scale spectroscopic surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in the 4. The mergers of binary compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes are of central interest to several areas of astrophysics, including as the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), sources of high-frequency gravitational waves and likely production sites for heavy element nucleosynthesis via rapid neutron capture (the r-process). These heavy elements include some of great geophysical, biological and cultural importance, such as thorium, iodine and gold. Here we present observations of the exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst GRB 230307A. We show that GRB 230307A belongs to the class of long-duration gamma-ray bursts associated with compact object mergers, and contains a kilonova similar to AT2017gfo, associated with the gravitational-wave merger GW170817. We obtained James Webb Space Telescope mid-infrared (mid-IR) imaging and spectroscopy 29 and 61 days after the burst. The spectroscopy shows an emission line at 2.15 microns which we interpret as tellurium (atomic mass A=130), and a very red source, emitting most of its light in the mid-IR due to the production of lanthanides. These observations demonstrate that nucleosynthesis in GRBs can create r-process elements across a broad atomic mass range and play a central role in heavy element nucleosynthesis across the Universe., Comment: Submitted. We investigate the production efficiency of ionizing photons ($\xi_{ion}^*$) of 1174 galaxies with secure redshift at z=2-5 from the VANDELS survey to determine the relation between ionizing emission and physical properties of bright and massive sources. We constrain $\xi_{ion}^*$ and galaxy physical parameters by means of spectro-photometric fits performed with the BEAGLE code. The analysis exploits the multi-band photometry in the VANDELS fields, and the measurement of UV rest-frame emission lines (CIII]$\lambda 1909$, HeII$\lambda 1640$, OIII]$\lambda 1666$) from deep VIMOS spectra. We find no clear evolution of $\xi_{ion}^*$ with redshift within the probed range. The ionizing efficiency slightly increases at fainter $M_{UV}$, and bluer UV slopes, but these trends are less evident when restricting the analysis to a complete subsample at log(M$_{star}$/M$_{\odot}$)$>$9.5. We find a significant trend of increasing $\xi_{ion}^*$ with increasing EW(Ly$\alpha$), with an average log($\xi_{ion}^*$/Hz erg$^{-1}$)$>$25 at EW$>$50\AA, and a higher ionizing efficiency for high-EW CIII]$\lambda 1909$ and OIII]$\lambda 1666$ emitters. The most significant correlations are found with respect to stellar mass, specific star-formation rate (sSFR) and SFR surface density ($\Sigma_{SFR}$). The relation between $\xi_{ion}^*$ and sSFR shows a monotonic increase from log($\xi_{ion}^*$/Hz erg$^{-1}$) $\sim$24.5 at log(sSFR)$\sim$-9.5$yr^{-1}$ to $\sim$25.5 at log(sSFR)$\sim$-7.5$yr^{-1}$, a low scatter and little dependence on mass. The objects above the main-sequence of star-formation consistently have higher-than-average $\xi_{ion}^*$. A clear increase of $\xi_{ion}^*$ with $\Sigma_{SFR}$ is also found, with log($\xi_{ion}^*$/Hz erg$^{-1}$)$>$25 for objects at $\Sigma_{SFR}>$10 M$_{\odot}/yr/kpc^2$.(Abridged), Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Context: The extreme luminosity of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) makes them powerful beacons for studies of the distant Universe. The most luminous bursts are typically detected at moderate/high redshift, where the volume for seeing such rare events is maximized and the star-formation activity is greater than at z = 0. For distant events, not all observations are feasible, such as at TeV energies. Aims: Here we present a spectroscopic redshift measurement for the exceptional GRB 221009A, the brightest GRB observed to date with emission extending well into the TeV regime. Methods: We used the X-shooter spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) to obtain simultaneous optical to near-IR spectroscopy of the burst afterglow 0.5 days after the explosion. Results: The spectra exhibit both absorption and emission lines from material in a host galaxy at z = 0.151. Thus GRB 221009A was a relatively nearby burst with a luminosity distance of 745 Mpc. Its host galaxy properties (star-formation rate and metallicity) are consistent with those of LGRB hosts at low redshift. This redshift measurement yields information on the energy of the burst. The inferred isotropic energy release, $E_{\rm iso} > 5 \times 10^{54}$ erg, lies at the high end of the distribution, making GRB 221009A one of the nearest and also most energetic GRBs observed to date. We present JWST and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the afterglow of GRB 221009A, the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) ever observed. This includes the first mid-IR spectra of any GRB, obtained with JWST/NIRSPEC (0.6-5.5 micron) and MIRI (5-12 micron), 12 days after the burst. Assuming that the intrinsic spectral slope is a single power-law, with $F_{\nu} \propto \nu^{-\beta}$, we obtain $\beta \approx 0.35$, modified by substantial dust extinction with $A_V = 4.9$. This suggests extinction above the notional Galactic value, possibly due to patchy extinction within the Milky Way or dust in the GRB host galaxy. It further implies that the X-ray and optical/IR regimes are not on the same segment of the synchrotron spectrum of the afterglow. If the cooling break lies between the X-ray and optical/IR, then the temporal decay rates would only match a post jet-break model, with electron index $p<2$, and with the jet expanding into a uniform ISM medium. The shape of the JWST spectrum is near-identical in the optical/nIR to X-shooter spectroscopy obtained at 0.5 days and to later time observations with HST. The lack of spectral evolution suggests that any accompanying supernova (SN) is either substantially fainter or bluer than SN 1998bw, the proto-type GRB-SN. Our HST observations also reveal a disc-like host galaxy, viewed close to edge-on, that further complicates the isolation of any supernova component. The host galaxy appears rather typical amongst long-GRB hosts and suggests that the extreme properties of GRB 221009A are not directly tied to its galaxy-scale environment., Comment: Accepted for publication to the Astrophysical Journal Letters for the GRB 221009A Special Issue. The chemical composition of gas in galaxies can be measured in detail from absorption spectroscopy. By studying gas in galaxies in this way, it is possible to investigate the small and faint galaxies, which are the most numerous in the universe. In particular, the chemical distribution of gas in absorbing systems gives us insight into cycles of gas in and around galaxies. Here we study chemical enrichment within 64 Damped Lyman-alpha Absorption (DLA) systems between $1.7 < z < 4.2$. We use high-resolution spectra from VLT/UVES to infer dust depletion from relative abundances of several metals. We perform a component-by-component analysis within DLAs, and characterise variations in their chemical enrichment. Unlike hydrogen, the metal columns can be characterised for individual components. We use them to derive the dust depletion ([Zn/Fe]fit), as an indicator for chemical enrichment. We find that some DLAs are chemically diverse within themselves, with [Zn/Fe]fit ranging up to 0.62 dex within a single system. This suggests that absorbing gas within these galaxies is chemically diverse. Although we do not find a clear trend of decreasing dust depletion with redshift, we do see that the most chemically enriched systems are at lower redshifts. We also observe evidence for dust-poor components at all redshifts, which may be due to the accretion of pristine gas onto galaxies. We combine the chemical and kinematic properties of the individual gas components and observe potential signatures of infalling gas, with low depletion at velocities below $\sim$100km/s, and outflows, with high depletion and velocities of $\sim$600km/s. We find over-abundances of alpha-elements (an enhancement of $\sim$0.3dex) and under-abundances of Mn in several components, which is likely a signature of core-collapse SNe nucleosythesis in the ISM. The study of the properties of galaxies in the first billion years after the Big Bang is one of the major topic of current astrophysics. Optical/near-infrared spectroscopy of the afterglows of long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) provide a powerful diagnostic tool to probe the interstellar medium (ISM) of their host galaxies and foreground absorbers, even up to the highest redshifts. We analyze the VLT/X-shooter afterglow spectrum of GRB 210905A, triggered by the Swift Neil Gehrels Observatory, and detect neutral-hydrogen, low-ionization, high-ionization, and fine-structure absorption lines from a complex system at z=6.3118, that we associate with the GRB host galaxy. We study the ISM properties of the host system, revealing the metallicity, kinematics and chemical abundance pattern. The total metallicity of the z~6.3 system is [M/H]=-1.72+/-0.13, after correcting for dust-depletion and taking into account alpha-element enhancement. In addition, we determine the overall amount of dust and dust-to-metal mass ratio (DTM) ([Zn/Fe]_fit=0.33+/-0.09, DTM=0.18+/-0.03). We find indications of nucleosynthesis due to massive stars and evidence of peculiar over-abundance of aluminium. From the analysis of fine-structure lines, we determine distances of several kpc for the low-ionization gas clouds closest to the GRB. Those farther distances are possibly due to the high number of ionizing photons. Using the HST/F140W image of the GRB field, we show the GRB host galaxy as well as multiple objects within 2" from the GRB. We discuss the galaxy structure and kinematics that could explain our observations, also taking into account a tentative detection of Lyman-alpha emission. To better understand the ionizing properties of galaxies in the EoR, we investigate deep, rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of $\simeq 500$ star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ selected from the public ESO-VANDELS spectroscopic survey. The absolute ionizing photon escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$) is derived by combining absorption line measurements with estimates of the UV attenuation. The ionizing production efficiency ($\xi_{ion}$) is calculated by fitting the far-UV (FUV) stellar continuum of the VANDELS galaxies. We find that the $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$ and $\xi_{ion}$ parameters increase towards low-mass, blue UV-continuum slopes and strong Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies, and both are just slightly higher-than-average for the UV-faintest galaxies in the sample. Potential Lyman Continuum Emitters (LCEs) and selected Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) show systematically higher $\xi_{ion}$ ($\log \xi_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.38, 25.41$) than non-LCEs and non-LAEs ($\log \xi_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.18, 25.14$) at similar UV magnitudes. This indicates very young underlying stellar populations ($\approx 10~{\rm Myr}$) at relatively low metallicities ($\approx 0.2~{\rm Z_{\odot}}$). The FUV non-ionizing spectra of potential LCEs is characterized by very blue UV slopes ($\leq -2$), enhanced Ly$\alpha$ emission ($\leq -25$A), strong UV nebular lines (e.g., high CIV1550/CIII]1908 $\geq 0.75$ ratios), and weak absorption lines ($\leq 1$A). The latter suggests the existence of low gas-column-density channels in the interstellar medium which enables the escape of ionizing photons. By comparing our VANDELS results against other surveys in the literature, our findings imply that the ionizing budget in the EoR was likely dominated by UV-faint, low-mass and dustless galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS on April 24, 2023

Gaseous flows inside and outside galaxies are key to understanding galaxy evolution, as they regulate their star formation activity across cosmic time. We study the ISM kinematics of 330 CIII or HeII emitters, using far-UV ISM absorption lines detected in the VANDELS spectra. These galaxies span a broad range of stellar masses M$_\ast$ from $10^8$ to $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, and SFRs from 1 to 500 M$_\odot$/yr, in the redshift range between 2 and 5. We find that the bulk ISM velocity v$_{ism}$ is globally in outflow, with v$_{ism}$ of -60 $\pm$ 10 km/s for low ionization gas traced by SiII 1260 Angstrom, CII 1334, SiII 1526, and AlII 1670, and v$_{ism}$ of -160 $\pm$ 30 and -170 $\pm$ 30 km/s for higher ionization gas traced respectively by AlIII 1854-1862 and SiIV 1393-1402. Interestingly, BPASS models are able to better reproduce the stellar continuum around the SiIV doublet than other stellar population templates. For individual galaxies, $34\%$ of the sample has a positive ISM velocity shift, almost double the fraction reported at lower redshifts. Comparing v$_{ism}$ to the host galaxies properties, we find no significant correlations with M$_\ast$ or SFR, and only a marginally significant dependence (at $\sim 2\sigma$) on morphology-related parameters, with slightly higher velocities in galaxies of smaller size (probed by the equivalent radius), higher concentration, and higher SFR surface density. The outflows are consistent with models of accelerating, momentum-driven winds, with densities decreasing towards the outskirts. Our moderately lower ISM velocities compared to those found in similar studies at lower redshifts suggest that inflows and internal turbulence might play an increased role at $z>2$. We estimate mass outflow rates comparable to the SFRs of the galaxies, and an average escape velocity of 625 km/s, suggesting that most of the ISM will remain bound to the galaxy halo., Comment: 24 pages, 2 tables and 20 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. Here, we report the discovery of a kilonova associated with the nearby (350 Mpc) minute-duration GRB 211211A. In tandem with deep optical limits that rule out the presence of an accompanying supernova to $M_I > -13$ mag at 17.7 days post-burst, the identification of a kilonova confirms that this burst's progenitor was a compact object merger. While the spectrally softer tail in GRB 211211A's gamma-ray light curve is reminiscent of previous extended emission short GRBs (EE-SGRBs), its prompt, bright spikes last $\gtrsim 12$ s, separating it from past EE-SGRBs. GRB 211211A's kilonova has a similar luminosity, duration and color to AT2017gfo, the kilonova found in association with the gravitational wave (GW)-detected binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817. We find that the merger ejected $\approx 0.04 M_{\odot}$ of r-process-rich material, and is consistent with the merger of two neutron stars (NSs) with masses close to the canonical $1.4 M_{\odot}$. This discovery implies that GRBs with long, complex light curves can be spawned from compact object merger events and that a population of kilonovae following GRBs with durations $\gg 2$ s should be accounted for in calculations of the NS merger r-process contribution and rate. At 350 Mpc, the current network of GW interferometers at design sensitivity would have detected the merger precipitating GRB 211211A, had it been operating at the time of the event. While emission-selected galaxy surveys are biased towards the most luminous part of the galaxy population, absorption selection is a potentially unbiased galaxy selection technique with respect to luminosity. However, the physical properties of absorption-selected galaxies are not well characterised. Here we study the excitation conditions in the interstellar medium (ISM) in damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption-selected galaxies. We present a study of the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) in four high-metallicity absorption-selected galaxies with previously reported CO detections at intermediate ($z \sim 0.7$) and high ($z \sim 2$) redshifts. We find further evidence for a wide variety of ISM conditions in these galaxies. Two out of the four galaxies show CO SLEDs consistent with that of the Milky Way inner disk. Interestingly, one of these galaxies is at $z \sim 2$ and has a CO SLED below that of main-sequence galaxies at similar redshifts. The other two galaxies at $z>2$ show more excited ISM conditions, with one of them showing thermal excitation of the mid-$J$ (J$=3, 4$) levels, similar to that seen in two massive main-sequence galaxies at these redshifts. Understanding how super-massive black holes form and grow in the early Universe has become a major challenge since the discovery of luminous quasars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. Simulations indicate an evolutionary sequence of dust-reddened quasars emerging from heavily dust-obscured starbursts that then transition to unobscured luminous quasars by expelling gas and dust. Although the last phase has been identified out to a redshift of 7.6, a transitioning quasar has not been found at similar redshifts owing to their faintness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Here we report observations of an ultraviolet compact object, GNz7q, associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst at a redshift of z=7.1899+/-0.0005. The host galaxy is more luminous in dust emission than any other known object at this epoch, forming 1,600 solar masses of stars per year within a central radius of 480 parsec. A red point source in the far-ultraviolet is identified in deep, high-resolution imaging and slitless spectroscopy. GNz7q is extremely faint in X-rays, which indicates the emergence of a uniquely ultraviolet compact star-forming region or a Compton-thick super-Eddington black-hole accretion disk at the dusty starburst core. In the latter case, the observed properties are consistent with predictions from cosmological simulations and suggest that GNz7q is an antecedent to unobscured luminous quasars at later epochs., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. We present a detailed follow-up of the very energetic GRB 210905A at a high redshift of z = 6.312 and its luminous X-ray and optical afterglow. We obtained a photometric and spectroscopic follow-up in the optical and near-infrared (NIR), covering both the prompt and afterglow emission from a few minutes up to 20 Ms after burst. With an isotropic gamma-ray energy release of Eiso = 1.27E54 erg, GRB 210905A lies in the top ~7% of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in terms of energy released. Its afterglow is among the most luminous ever observed. It starts with a shallow evolution that can be explained by energy injection, and it is followed by a steeper decay, while the spectral energy distribution is in agreement with slow cooling in a constant-density environment within the standard fireball theory. A jet break at ~ 46.2+-16.3 d (~6.3 d rest-frame) has been observed in the X-ray light curve; however, it is hidden in the H band due to the contribution from the likely host galaxy, the fourth GRB host at z > 6 known to date. We derived a half-opening angle of 8.4+-1.0 degrees, which is the highest ever measured for a z>6 burst, but within the range covered by closer events. The resulting collimation-corrected gamma-ray energy release of 1E52 erg is also among the highest ever measured. The moderately large half-opening angle argues against recent claims of an inverse dependence of the half-opening angle on the redshift. The total jet energy is likely too large to be sustained by a standard magnetar, and it suggests that the central engine of this burst was a newly formed black hole. Despite the outstanding energetics and luminosity of both GRB 210905A and its afterglow, we demonstrate that they are consistent with those of less distant bursts, indicating that the powering mechanisms and progenitors do not evolve significantly with redshift., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables, accepted in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a study designed to measure the average LyC escape fraction ($\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$) of star-forming galaxies at z=3.5. We assemble a sample of 148 galaxies from the VANDELS survey at $3.35\leq z_{\rm spec}\leq3.95$, selected to minimize line-of-sight contamination of their photometry. For this sample, we use ultra-deep, ground-based, $U-$band imaging and HST $V-$band imaging to robustly measure the distribution of $\mathcal{R_{\rm obs}}$ $=(L_{\rm LyC}/L_{\rm UV})_{\rm obs}$. We then model the distribution as a function of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$, carefully accounting for attenuation by dust, and the IGM (and CGM). A maximum likelihood fit to the $\mathcal{R_{\rm obs}}$ distribution returns a best-fitting value of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle =0.07\pm0.02$, a result confirmed using an alternative Bayesian inference technique (both exclude $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle=0.0$ at $> 3\sigma$). By splitting our sample in two, we find evidence that $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$ is positively correlated with Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width, with high and low sub-samples returning best fits of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle=0.12^{+0.06}_{-0.04}$ and $\langle f_{\rm esc} \rangle=0.02^{+0.02}_{-0.01}$, respectively. In contrast, we find evidence that $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$ is anti-correlated with intrinsic UV luminosity and UV dust attenuation; with low UV luminosity and dust attenuation sub-samples returning best fits in the range $0.10 \leq \langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle \leq 0.22$. We do not find evidence for a clear correlation between $f_{\rm esc}$ and galaxy stellar mass, suggesting it is not a primary indicator of leakage. Although larger samples are needed to further explore these trends, they suggest that it is entirely plausible that the low dust and metallicity galaxies found at z > 6 will display the $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle\geq0.1$ required to drive reionization., Comment: 15 pages (+ appendix), 12 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We observed GRB190114C (redshift z = 0.4245), the first GRB ever detected at TeV energies, at optical and near-infrared wavelengths with several ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope, with the primary goal of studying its underlying supernova, SN2019jrj. The monitoring spanned the time interval between 1.3 and 370 days after the burst, in the observer frame. We find that the afterglow emission can be modelled with a forward shock propagating in a uniform medium modified by time-variable extinction along the line of sight. A jet break could be present after 7 rest-frame days, and accordingly the maximum luminosity of the underlying SN ranges between that of stripped-envelope corecollapse supernovae (SNe) of intermediate luminosity, and that of the luminous GRB-associated SN2013dx. The observed spectral absorption lines of SN2019jrj are not as broad as in classical GRB-SNe, and are rather more similar to those of less-luminous core-collapse SNe. Taking the broad-lined stripped-envelope core-collapse SN2004aw as an analogue, we tentatively derive the basic physical properties of SN2019jrj. We discuss the possibility that a fraction of the TeV emission of this source might have had a hadronic origin and estimate the expected high-energy neutrino detection level with IceCube., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) has become a cornerstone of extragalactic astronomy. Since the last public catalog in 2015, a wealth of new imaging and spectroscopic data has been collected in the COSMOS field. This paper describes the collection, processing, and analysis of this new imaging data to produce a new reference photometric redshift catalog. Source detection and multi-wavelength photometry is performed for 1.7 million sources across the $2\,\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ of the COSMOS field, $\sim$966,000 of which are measured with all available broad-band data using both traditional aperture photometric methods and a new profile-fitting photometric extraction tool, The Farmer, which we have developed. A detailed comparison of the two resulting photometric catalogs is presented. Photometric redshifts are computed for all sources in each catalog utilizing two independent photometric redshift codes. Finally, a comparison is made between the performance of the photometric methodologies and of the redshift codes to demonstrate an exceptional degree of self-consistency in the resulting photometric redshifts. We present a pilot search of CO emission in three H$_2$-absorbing, long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies at z~2-3. We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) to target the CO(3-2) emission line and report non-detections for all three hosts. These are used to place limits on the host molecular gas masses, assuming a metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$). We find, $M_{\rm mol} < 3.5\times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$ (GRB\,080607), $M_{\rm mol} < 4.7\times 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$ (GRB\,120815A), and $M_{\rm mol} < 8.9\times 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$ (GRB\,181020A). The high limits on the molecular gas mass for the latter two cases are a consequence of their low stellar masses $M_\star$ ($M_\star \lesssim 10^{8}\,M_{\odot}$) and low gas-phase metallicities ($Z\sim 0.03\,Z_{\odot}$). The limit on the $M_{\rm mol}/M_\star$ ratio derived for GRB\,080607, however, is consistent with the average population of star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts and stellar masses. We discuss the broader implications for a metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, and demonstrate that the canonical Galactic $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, will severely underestimate the actual molecular gas mass for all galaxies at $z>1$ with $M_\star < 10^{10}\,M_\odot$. To better quantify this we develop a simple approach to estimate the relevant $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ factor based only on the redshift and stellar mass of individual galaxies. The elevated conversion factors will make these galaxies appear CO-"dark" and difficult to detect in emission, as is the case for the majority of GRB hosts. GRB spectroscopy thus offers a complementary approach to identify low-metallicity, star-forming galaxies with abundant molecular gas reservoirs at high redshifts that are otherwise missed by current ALMA surveys., Comment: 7 pages, 5 Figs, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results of an optical spectroscopic survey using SALT and NOT to build a WISE mid-infrared color-based, dust-unbiased sample of powerful radio-bright ($>$200 mJy at 1.4 GHz) AGN for the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS). Our sample has 250 AGN (median $z=1.8$) showing emission lines, 26 with no emission lines, and 27 without optical counterparts. Overall, our sample is fainter ($\Delta i$=0.6 mag) and redder ($\Delta(g-i)$=0.2 mag) than radio-selected quasars, and representative of fainter quasar population detected in optical surveys. About 20% of the sources are narrow line AGN (NLAGN) $-$ 65% of these, at $z < 0.5$ are galaxies without strong nuclear emission, and 10% at $z>1.9$, have emission line ratios similar to radio galaxies. The farthest NLAGN in our sample is M1513$-$2524 ($z_{em}=3.132$), and the largest (size$\sim$330 kpc) is M0909$-$3133 ($z_{em}=0.884$). We discuss in detail 110 AGN at $1.9 < z < 3.5$. Despite representing the radio loudest quasars (median $R$=3685), their Eddington ratios are similar to the SDSS quasars having lower $R$. We detect 4 CIV BALQSOs, all among AGN with least $R$, and highest black hole masses and Eddington ratios. The BAL detection rate ($4^{+3}_{-2}$%) is consistent with that seen in extremely powerful ($L_{1.4GHz}>10^{25}$ WHz$^{-1}$) quasars. Using optical light-curves, radio polarization and $\gamma$-ray detections, we identify 7 high-probability BL Lacs. We present the updated census and statistics of Lyman-$\alpha$ emitting long gamma-ray bursts host galaxies (LAE-LGRBs). We investigate the properties of a sub-sample of LAE-LGRBs and test the shell model commonly used to fit Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission line spectra. Among the LAE-LGRBs detected to date, we select a golden sample of four LAE-LGRBs allowing us to retrieve information on the host galaxy properties and of its interstellar medium gas. We fit their Ly$\alpha$ spectra using the shell model, and constrain its parameters with the observed values. From the comparison of the statistics and properties of LAE-LGRBs to those of LAE samples in the literature, we find evidences of Ly$\alpha$ suppression in dusty systems, and a fraction of LAE-LGRBs among the overall LGRB hosts lower than that found for Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) samples at similar redshift range. However, we find that LAE-LGRBs are representative of Ly$\alpha$ emission from the bulk of UV-selected galaxies at z~2. We find that the golden sample of LAE-LGRBs are complex systems characterized by multiple emission blobs and by signs of possible galaxy interactions. The fitting procedure fails in recovering the HI column densities (NHI) measured from the afterglow spectra, and the other properties described by the shell-model parameters in the cases with very high NHI. The afterglows of most LGRBs and LAE-LGRBs show high NHI, implying that statistically the bulk of Ly$\alpha$ photons expected to be produced by massive stars in the star-forming region hosting the GRB will be surrounded by such opaque lines of sight. We interpret our results in the context of more sophisticated models and of different dominant Ly$\alpha$ emitting regions. We also compare LAE-LGRBs to LAE Lyman continuum (LyC) leakers in the literature in terms of properties identified as possible indirect indicators of LyC leakage. We use VANDELS spectroscopic data overlapping with the $\simeq$7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South survey to extend studies of high-mass X-ray binary systems (XRBs) in 301 normal star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $3 < z < 5.5$. Our analysis evaluates correlations between X-ray luminosities ($L_X$), star formation rates (SFR) and stellar metallicities ($Z_\star$) to higher redshifts and over a wider range in galaxy properties than hitherto. Using a stacking analysis performed in bins of both redshift and SFR for sources with robust spectroscopic redshifts without AGN signatures, we find convincing evolutionary trends in the ratio $L_X$/SFR to the highest redshifts probed, with a stronger trend for galaxies with lower SFRs. Combining our data with published samples at lower redshift, the evolution of $L_X$/SFR to $z\simeq5$ proceeds as $(1 + z)^{1.03 \pm 0.02}$. Using stellar metallicities derived from photospheric absorption features in our spectroscopic data, we confirm indications at lower redshifts that $L_X$/SFR is stronger for metal-poor galaxies. We use semi-analytic models to show that metallicity dependence of $L_X$/SFR alone may not be sufficient to fully explain the observed redshift evolution of X-ray emission from high-mass XRBs, particularly for galaxies with SFR $<30$ $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. We speculate that the discrepancy may arise due to reduced overall stellar ages in the early Universe leading to higher $L_X$/SFR for the same metallicity. We use our data to define the redshift-dependent contribution of XRBs to the integrated X-ray luminosity density and, in comparison with models, find that the contribution of high-mass XRBs to the cosmic X-ray background at $z>6$ may be $\gtrsim 0.25$ dex higher than previously estimated., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, Published in MNRAS

We present results from a spectroscopically blind search for associated and intervening HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption lines towards 88 AGNs at $2\le z\le5$ using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The sample of AGNs with 1.4 GHz spectral luminosity in the range, $10^{27 - 29.3}$ W/Hz, is selected using mid-infrared colors and closely resembles the distribution of the underlying quasar population. The search for associated or proximate absorption, defined to be within 3000 km/s of the AGN redshift, led to one HI 21-cm absorption detection (M1540-1453; $z_{abs}$= 2.1139). This is only the fourth known absorption at $z>2$. The detection rate ($1.6^{+3.8}_{-1.4}$%) suggests low covering factor of cold neutral medium (CNM; T$\sim$100 K) associated with these powerful AGNs. The intervening absorption line search, with a sensitivity to detect CNM in damped Ly$\alpha$ systems (DLAs), has comoving absorption path lengths of $\Delta$X = 130.1 and 167.7 for HI and OH, respectively. The corresponding number of absorber per unit comoving path lengths are $\le$0.014 and $\le$0.011, respectively. The former is at least 4.5 times lower than that of DLAs and consistent with the CNM cross-section estimated using H$_2$ and CI absorbers at $z>2$. Our AGN sample is optically fainter compared to the quasars used to search for DLAs in the past. In our optical spectra obtained using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT), we detect 5 intervening (redshift path$\sim9.3$) and 2 proximate DLAs. This is slightly excessive compared to the statistics based on optically selected quasars. Aim. Our aim is to analyse the variance of the Inter-Galactic Medium transmission (IGM) by studying this parameter in the rest-frame UV spectra of a large sample of high redshift galaxies. Method. We make use of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey and the VANDELS public survey to have an insight into the far UV spectrum of $2.7

VANDELS is an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey designed to build a sample of high signal to noise, medium resolution spectra of galaxies at redshift between 1 and 6.5. Here we present the final Public Data Release of the VANDELS Survey, comprising 2087 redshift measurements. We give a detailed description of sample selection, observations and data reduction procedures. The final catalogue reaches a target selection completeness of 40% at iAB = 25. The high Signal to Noise ratio of the spectra (above 7 in 80% of the spectra) and the dispersion of 2.5{\AA} allowed us to measure redshifts with high precision, the redshift measurement success rate reaching almost 100%. Together with the redshift catalogue and the reduced spectra, we also provide optical mid-IR photometry and physical parameters derived through SED fitting. The observed galaxy sample comprises both passive and star forming galaxies covering a stellar mass range 8.3< Log(M*/Msolar)<11.7. We present UV to NIR spectroscopic observations of the quasar J0015+1842 and its proximate molecular absorber at z=2.631. The [OIII] emission line of the quasar is composed of a broad (FWHM~1600 km/s), spatially-unresolved component, blueshifted by ~600 km/s from a narrow, spatially-resolved component (FWHM~650 km/s). The wide, blueshifted, unresolved component is consistent with the presence of outflowing gas in the nuclear region. The narrow component can be further decomposed into a blue and a red blob with velocity width of several hundred km/s each, seen ~5 pkpc on opposite spatial locations from the nuclear emission, indicating outflows over galactic scales. The presence of ionised gas over kpc-scales is also seen from a weak CIV emission component, detected in the trough of a saturated CIV absorption that removes the strong nuclear emission from the quasar. Towards the nuclear emission, we observe absorption lines from atomic species in various ionisation and excitation stages and confirm the presence of strong H2 lines. The overall absorption profile is very wide, spread over ~600 km/s, roughly matching in velocities the blue narrow [OIII] blob. From detailed investigation of the chemical and physical conditions in the absorbing gas, we infer densities of about nH ~ 10^4-10^5 cm^-3 in the cold (T~100 K) H2-bearing gas, which we find to be located at ~10 kpc distances from the central UV source. We conjecture that we are witnessing different manifestations of a same AGN-driven multi-phase outflow, where approaching gas is intercepted by the line of sight to the nucleus. We corroborate this picture by modelling the scattering of Ly-a photons from the central source through the outflowing gas, reproducing the peculiar Ly-a absorption-emission profile, with a damped Ly-a absorption in which red-peaked, spatially offset and extended Ly-a emission is seen. The estimate of stellar metallicities (Z*) of high-z galaxies are of paramount importance in order to understand the complexity of dust effects and the reciprocal interrelations among stellar mass, dust attenuation, stellar age, and metallicity. Benefiting from uniquely deep FUV spectra of >500 star-forming galaxies at redshifts 2

We report on the stellar content, half-light radii and star formation rates of a sample of 10 known high-redshift ($z\gtrsim 2$) galaxies selected on strong neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption (log(N(HI)/cm$^{-2})>19$) toward background quasars. We use observations from the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 in three broad-band filters to study the spectral energy distribution(SED) of the galaxies. Using careful quasar point spread function subtraction, we study their galactic environments, and perform the first systematic morphological characterisation of such absorption-selected galaxies at high redshifts. Our analysis reveals complex, irregular hosts with multiple star-forming clumps. At a spatial sampling of 0.067 arcsec per pixel (corresponding to 0.55 kpc at the median redshift of our sample), 40% of our sample requires multiple S\'ersic components for an accurate modelling of the observed light distributions. Placed on the mass-size relation and the `main sequence' of star-forming galaxies, we find that absorption-selected galaxies at high redshift extend known relations determined from deep luminosity-selected surveys to an order of magnitude lower stellar mass, with objects primarily composed of star-forming, late-type galaxies. We measure half-light radii in the range $r_{1/2} \sim$ 0.4 to 2.6 kpc based on the reddest band (F160W) to trace the oldest stellar populations, and stellar masses in the range $\log (\mathrm{M}_{\star}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}) \sim$ 8 to 10 derived from fits to the broad-band SED. Here we explore the efficiency and fidelity of a purely astrometric selection of quasars as point sources with zero proper motions in the {\it Gaia} data release 2 (DR2). We have built a complete candidate sample including 104 Gaia-DR2 point sources brighter than $G<20$ mag within one degree of the north Galactic pole (NGP), all with proper motions consistent with zero within 2$\sigma$ uncertainty. In addition to pre-existing spectra, we have secured long-slit spectroscopy of all the remaining candidates and find that all 104 stationary point sources in the field can be classified as either quasars (63) or stars (41). The selection efficiency of the zero-proper-motion criterion at high Galactic latitudes is thus $\approx 60\%$. Based on this complete quasar sample we examine the basic properties of the underlying quasar population within the imposed limiting magnitude. We find that the surface density of quasars is 20 deg$^{-2}$, the redshift distribution peaks at $z\sim1.5$, and that only eight systems ($13^{+5}_{-3}\%$) show significant dust reddening. We then explore the selection efficiency of commonly used optical, near- and mid-infrared quasar identification techniques and find that they are all complete at the $85-90\%$ level compared to the astrometric selection. Finally, we discuss how the astrometric selection can be improved to an efficiency of $\approx70\%$ by including an additional cut requiring parallaxes of the candidates to be consistent with zero within 2$\sigma$. The selection efficiency will further increase with the release of future, more sensitive astrometric measurement from the Gaia mission. This type of selection, purely based on the astrometry of the quasar candidates, is unbiased in terms of colours and emission mechanisms of the quasars and thus provides the most complete census of the quasar population within the limiting magnitude of Gaia., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We present the observations of Lyman continuum (LyC) emission in the afterglow spectra of GRB 191004B at $z=3.5055$, together with those of the other two previously known LyC-emitting long gamma-ray bursts (LGRB) (GRB 050908 at $z=3.3467$, and GRB 060607A at $z=3.0749$), to determine their LyC escape fraction and compare their properties. From the afterglow spectrum of GRB 191004B we determine a neutral hydrogen column density at the LGRB redshift of $\log(N_{\rm HI}/cm^{-2})= 17.2 \pm 0.15$, and negligible extinction ($A_{\rm V}=0.03 \pm 0.02$ mag). The only metal absorption lines detected are CIV and SiIV. In contrast to GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A, the host galaxy of GRB 191004B displays significant Ly$\alpha$ emission. From its Ly$\alpha$ emission and the non-detection of Balmer emission lines we constrain its star-formation rate (SFR) to $1 \leq$ SFR $\leq 4.7$ M$_{\odot}\ yr^{-1}$. We fit the Ly$\alpha$ emission with a shell model and find parameters values consistent with the observed ones. The absolute LyC escape fractions we find for GRB 191004B, GRB 050908 and GRB 060607A are of $0.35^{+0.10}_{-0.11}$, $0.08^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$ and $0.20^{+0.05}_{-0.05}$, respectively. We compare the LyC escape fraction of LGRBs to the values of other LyC emitters found from the literature, showing that LGRB afterglows can be powerful tools to study LyC escape for faint high-redshift star-forming galaxies. Indeed we could push LyC leakage studies to much higher absolute magnitudes. The host galaxies of the three LGRB presented here have all $M_{\rm 1600} > -19.5$ mag, with the GRB 060607A host at $M_{\rm 1600} > -16$ mag. LGRB hosts may therefore be particularly suitable for exploring the ionizing escape fraction in galaxies that are too faint or distant for conventional techniques. Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from ultra-relativistic jets launched from the collapsing cores of dying massive stars. They are characterised by an initial phase of bright and highly variable radiation in the keV-MeV band that is likely produced within the jet and lasts from milliseconds to minutes, known as the prompt emission. Subsequently, the interaction of the jet with the external medium generates external shock waves, responsible for the afterglow emission, which lasts from days to months, and occurs over a broad energy range, from the radio to the GeV bands. The afterglow emission is generally well explained as synchrotron radiation by electrons accelerated at the external shock. Recently, an intense, long-lasting emission between 0.2 and 1 TeV was observed from the GRB 190114C. Here we present the results of our multi-frequency observational campaign of GRB~190114C, and study the evolution in time of the GRB emission across 17 orders of magnitude in energy, from $5\times10^{-6}$ up to $10^{12}$\,eV. We find that the broadband spectral energy distribution is double-peaked, with the TeV emission constituting a distinct spectral component that has power comparable to the synchrotron component. This component is associated with the afterglow, and is satisfactorily explained by inverse Compton upscattering of synchrotron photons by high-energy electrons. We find that the conditions required to account for the observed TeV component are not atypical, supporting the possibility that inverse Compton emission is commonly produced in GRBs.

We investigate how damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at z ~ 2-3, detected in large optical spectroscopic surveys of quasars, trace the population of star-forming galaxies. Building on previous results, we construct a model based on observed and physically motivated scaling relations in order to reproduce the bivariate distributions of metallicity, Z, and HI column density, N(HI). Furthermore, the observed impact parameters for galaxies associated to DLAs are in agreement with the model predictions. The model strongly favours a metallicity gradient, which scales with the luminosity of the host galaxy, with a value of $\gamma$* = -0.019 $\pm$ 0.008 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for L* galaxies that gets steeper for fainter galaxies. We find that DLAs trace galaxies over a wide range of galaxy luminosities, however, the bulk of the DLA cross-section arises in galaxies with L ~ 0.1 L* at z ~ 2.5 broadly consistent with numerical simulations., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 8 pages

We explore X-ray emission from a sample of 18 He II 1640 emitting star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2.3-3.6 from the VANDELS survey in the Chandra Deep Field South, to set constraints on the role of X-ray sources in powering the He II emission. We find that 4 He II emitters have tentative detections with S/N ~ 2 and have X-ray luminosities, L_X = 1.5-4.9 x 10^41 erg/s. The stacked luminosity of all 18 He II emitters is 2.6 x 10^41 erg/s, and that of a subset of 13 narrow He II emitters (FHWM(He II) < 1000 km/s) is 3.1 x 10^41 erg/s. We also measure stacked L_X for non-He II emitters through bootstrapping of matched samples, and find L_X = 2.5 x 10^41 erg/s, which is not significantly different from L_X measured for He II emitters. The L_X per star-formation rate for He II emitters (log (L_X/SFR) ~ 40.0) and non-emitters (log (L_X/SFR) ~ 39.9) are also comparable and in line with the redshift evolution and metallicity dependence predicted by models. Due to the non-significant difference between the X-ray emission from galaxies with and without He II, we conclude that X-ray binaries or weak or obscured AGNs are unlikely to be the dominant producers of He II ionising photons in VANDELS star-forming galaxies at z ~ 3. Given the comparable physical properties of both He II emitters and non-emitters reported previously, alternative He II ionising mechanisms such as localised low-metallicity stellar populations, Pop-III stars, etc. may need to be explored., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

On 2019 August 14, the LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected a high-significance event labelled S190814bv. Preliminary analysis of the GW data suggests that the event was likely due to the merger of a compact binary system formed by a BH and a NS. ElectromagNetic counterparts of GRAvitational wave sources at the VEry Large Telescope (ENGRAVE) collaboration members carried out an intensive multi-epoch, multi-instrument observational campaign to identify the possible optical/near infrared counterpart of the event. In addition, the ATLAS, GOTO, GRAWITA-VST, Pan-STARRS and VINROUGE projects also carried out a search on this event. Our observations allow us to place limits on the presence of any counterpart and discuss the implications for the kilonova (KN) possibly generated by this NS-BH merger, and for the strategy of future searches. Altogether, our observations allow us to exclude a KN with large ejecta mass $M\gtrsim 0.1\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ to a high ($>90\%$) confidence, and we can exclude much smaller masses in a subsample of our observations. This disfavours the tidal disruption of the neutron star during the merger. Despite the sensitive instruments involved in the campaign, given the distance of S190814bv we could not reach sufficiently deep limits to constrain a KN comparable in luminosity to AT 2017gfo on a large fraction of the localisation probability. This suggests that future (likely common) events at a few hundreds Mpc will be detected only by large facilities with both high sensitivity and large field of view. Galaxy-targeted observations can reach the needed depth over a relevant portion of the localisation probability with a smaller investment of resources, but the number of galaxies to be targeted in order to get a fairly complete coverage is large, even in the case of a localisation as good as that of this event., Comment: 52 pages, revised version now accepted for publication in A&A. We present the results of a new study investigating the relationship between observed Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width ($W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$)) and the metallicity of the ionizing stellar population ($Z_{\star}$) for a sample of $768$ star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ drawn from the VANDELS survey. Dividing our sample into quartiles of rest-frame $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) across the range $-58 \unicode{xC5} \lesssim$ $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) $\lesssim 110 \unicode{xC5}$ we determine $Z_{\star}$ from full spectral fitting of composite far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra and find a clear anti-correlation between $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) and $Z_{\star}$. Our results indicate that $Z_{\star}$ decreases by a factor $\gtrsim 3$ between the lowest $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) quartile ($\langle$$W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$)$\rangle=-18\unicode{xC5}$) and the highest $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) quartile ($\langle$$W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$)$\rangle=24\unicode{xC5}$). Similarly, galaxies typically defined as Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs; $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) $>20\unicode{xC5}$) are, on average, metal poor with respect to the non-LAE galaxy population ($W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) $\leq20\unicode{xC5}$) with $Z_{\star}$$_{\rm{non-LAE}}\gtrsim 2 \times$ $Z_{\star}$$_{\rm{LAE}}$. Finally, based on the best-fitting stellar models, we estimate that the increasing strength of the stellar ionizing spectrum towards lower $Z_{\star}$ is responsible for $\simeq 15-25\%$ of the observed variation in $W_{\lambda}$(Ly$\alpha$) across our sample, with the remaining contribution ($\simeq 75-85\%$) being due to a decrease in the HI/dust covering fractions in low $Z_{\star}$ galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, MNRAS accepted

We present a study of the galaxy environment of 9 strong HI+CIV absorption line systems ($16.2<{\rm log}(N({\rm HI}))<21.2$) spanning a wide range in metallicity at $z\sim4-5$, using MUSE integral field and X-Shooter spectroscopic data collected in a $z\approx 5.26$ quasar field. We identify galaxies within a 250 kpc and $\pm1000$ km s$^{-1}$ window for 6 out of the 9 absorption systems, with 2 of the absorption line systems showing multiple associated galaxies within the MUSE field of view. The space density of Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) around the HI and CIV systems is $\approx10-20$ times the average sky density of LAEs given the flux limit of our survey, showing a clear correlation between the absorption and galaxy populations. Further, we find that the strongest CIV systems in our sample are those that are most closely aligned with galaxies in velocity space, i.e. within velocities of $\pm500$ km s$^{-1}$. The two most metal poor systems lie in the most dense galaxy environments, implying we are potentially tracing gas that is infalling for the first time into star-forming groups at high redshift. Finally, we detect an extended Ly$\alpha$ nebula around the $z\approx 5.26$ quasar, which extends up to $\approx50$ kpc at the surface brightness limit of $3.8 \times 10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$. After scaling for surface brightness dimming, we find that this nebula is centrally brighter, having a steeper radial profile than the average for nebulae studied at $z\sim3$ and is consistent with the mild redshift evolution seen from $z\approx 2$., Comment: 19 pages (+2 pages appendices), 19 figures (+4 in appendices).
