A novel practical few-body method is formulated to include isospin symmetry for nuclear halo structures. The method is designed to describe β decay, where the basic concept of isospin symmetry facilitates a proper understanding. Both isobaric analog and antianalog states are treated. We derive general and explicit formulas for three-body systems using hyperspherical coordinates. The example of the β decaying Li11 (Li9+n+n) is chosen as a challenging application for numerical calculations of practical interest. The detailed results are compared to existing experimental data, and good agreement is found at high excitation energies, where the isobaric analog and antianalog states are situated in the daughter nucleus. An interpretation of the decay pattern at lower excitation energies is suggested. Decays of the Li9 core and the two halo neutrons are individually treated and combined with the daughter system with almost unique isospin, which we predict to be broken by about 0.4% probability. Properties of decay products are predicted as possible future tests of this model.

The proton drip-line nucleus 17Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17Ne(p,2p)16F→15⁎O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16F into 15O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l=0 and l=2 motion of the valence protons in 17Ne. With a resulting relatively small l=0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

13 pags., 5 figs., 2 tabs., The structure of Po208 populated through the EC/β+ decay of At208 is investigated using γ-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station. The presented level scheme contains 27 new excited states and 43 new transitions, as well as a further 50 previously observed γ rays which have been (re)assigned a position. The level scheme is compared to shell model calculations. Through this analysis approximately half of the β-decay strength of At208 is found to proceed via allowed decay and half via first-forbidden decay. The first-forbidden transitions predominantly populate core excited states at high excitation energies, which is qualitatively understood using shell model considerations. The main goal of this work is to study the structure of the highest energy states in 8Be populated following the β+-decay and the electron capture (EC) of 8B. With this aim, two experiments were performed at ISOLDE-CERN in 2017 and 2018. The first experiment had the aim to resolve the 2+ doublet at 16.6 and 16.9 MeV, in order to study their isospin mixing. The second experiment aimed to determine a value or give an experimental upper limit to the branching ratio of the exotic EC-p decay. In this paper, we present the experimental setups and we discuss the analysis and present the preliminary results obtained so far.

We investigate an implication of the most recent observation of a second Jπ=2+ state in C12, which was measured using the C12(γ,α)Be(g.s.)8 reaction. In addition to the dissociation of C12 to an α-particle and Be8 in its ground state, a small fraction of events (2%) were identified as direct decays and decays to excited states in Be8. This allowed a limit on the direct 3α partial decay width to be determined as Γ3α

The isobaric nuclei 20Ne and 20F were investigated with the 22Ne(p,t)20Ne and 22Ne(p,3He)20F reactions using a beam of protons at Ep = 80 MeV. The former reaction was employed to confirm a tentative candidate for the 5-alpha cluster state in 20Ne, while the latter was used to look for T = 2 isobaric analogue partner states in 20F to states which were already observed above Ex = 20 MeV in 20Ne. The existence of a state which could be considered as a candidate for the 5-alpha cluster state is confirmed here as well as the T = 2 IAS states in 20Ne.

openaire: EC/H2020/654002/EU//ENSAR2 We report the first detection of the second-forbidden, nonunique, 2(+) -> 0(+), ground-state transition in the beta decay of F-20. A low-energy, mass-separated F-20(+) beam produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyvaskyla, Finland, was implanted in a thin carbon foil and the beta spectrum measured using a magnetic transporter and a plastic-scintillator detector. The beta-decay branching ratio inferred from the measurement is b(beta) = [0.41 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.07(sys)] x 10(-5) corresponding to log ft = 10.89(11), making this one of the strongest second-forbidden, nonunique beta transitions ever measured. The experimental result is supported by shell-model calculations and has significant implications for the final evolution of stars that develop degenerate oxygen-neon cores. Using the new experimental data, we argue that the astrophysical electron-capture rate on Ne-20 is now known to within better than 25% at the relevant temperatures and densities.

Gamow-Teller β decay is forbidden if the number of nodes in the radial wave functions of the initial and final states is different. This Δn=0 requirement plays a major role in the β decay of heavy neutron-rich nuclei, affecting the nucleosynthesis through the increased half-lives of nuclei on the astrophysical r-process pathway below both Z=50 (for N>82) and Z=82 (for N>126). The level of forbiddenness of the Δn=1ν1g 9/2 →π0g 7/2 transition has been investigated from the β − decay of the ground state of 207 Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207 Tl in an experiment at the ISOLDE Decay Station. From statistical observational limits on possible γ-ray transitions depopulating the π0g 7/2 −1 state in 207 Tl, an upper limit of 3.9×10 −3 % was obtained for the probability of this decay, corresponding to log⁡ft>8.8 within a 95% confidence limit. This is the most stringent test of the Δn=0 selection rule to date.

A significant fraction of stars between 7-11 solar masses are thought to become supernovae, but the explosion mechanism is unclear. The answer depends critically on the rate of electron capture on $^{20}$Ne in the degenerate oxygen-neon stellar core. However, due to the unknown strength of the transition between the ground states of $^{20}$Ne and $^{20}$F, it has not previously been possible to fully constrain the rate. By measuring the transition, we have established that its strength is exceptionally large and enhances the capture rate by several orders of magnitude. This has a decisive impact on the evolution of the core, increasing the likelihood that the star is (partially) disrupted by a thermonuclear explosion rather than collapsing to form a neutron star. The shape and normalization of the β-delayed α spectrum from Be11 was measured by implanting Be11 ions in a segmented Si detector. The spectrum is found to be dominated by a well-known transition to the 3/2+ state at Ex=9.87MeV in B11. A significant increase in the observed decay strength towards the higher end of the Qβ window means, however, that the 9.87MeV state cannot alone be responsible for the transition. Using the R-matrix framework we find that the inclusion of an extra 3/2+ state at Ex=11.49(10)MeV is required to obtain a satisfactory description of the spectrum. Both states show large widths towards α decay, exhausting significant fractions of the Wigner limit, a typical signature of α clusterization. The observed Gamow-Teller strength indicates large overlaps between the two states and the ground state of Be11.

The ^{12}C(α,γ)^{16}O reaction plays a central role in astrophysics, but its cross section at energies relevant for astrophysical applications is only poorly constrained by laboratory data. The reduced α width, γ_{11}, of the bound 1^{-} level in ^{16}O is particularly important to determine the cross section. The magnitude of γ_{11} is determined via sub-Coulomb α-transfer reactions or the β-delayed α decay of ^{16}N, but the latter approach is presently hampered by the lack of sufficiently precise data on the β-decay branching ratios. Here we report improved branching ratios for the bound 1^{-} level [b_{β,11}=(5.02±0.10)×10^{-2}] and for β-delayed α emission [b_{βα}=(1.59±0.06)×10^{-5}]. Our value for b_{βα} is 33% larger than previously held, leading to a substantial increase in γ_{11}. Our revised value for γ_{11} is in good agreement with the value obtained in α-transfer studies and the weighted average of the two gives a robust and precise determination of γ_{11}, which provides significantly improved constraints on the ^{12}C(α,γ) cross section in the energy range relevant to hydrostatic He burning. ispartof: PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS vol:121 issue:14 ispartof: location:United States status: published

The Iβ decay of O13 has been studied at the IGISOL facility of the Jyväskylä accelerator centre (Finland). By developing a low-energy isotope-separated beam of O13 and using a modern segmented charged-particle detector array an improved measurement of the delayed proton spectrum was possible. Protons with energy up to more than 12 MeV are measured and the corresponding log(ft) values extracted. A revised decay scheme is constructed. The connection to molecular states and the shell model is discussed.

Using [Formula presented] decays of a clean source of [Formula presented] produced at the IGISOL facility, we have measured the breakup of the [Formula presented] (12.71 MeV) state into three [Formula presented] particles with a segmented particle detector setup. The high quality of the data permits solving the question of the breakup mechanism of the 12.71 MeV state, a longstanding problem in few-body nuclear physics. Among existing models, a modified sequential model fits the data best, but systematic deviations indicate that a three-body description is needed.

The β decay of Hg207 into the single-proton-hole nucleus Tl207 has been studied through γ-ray spectroscopy at the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS) with the aim of identifying states resulting from coupling of the πs1/2-1, πd3/2-1, and πh11/2-1 shell model orbitals to the collective octupole vibration. Twenty-two states were observed lying between 2.6 and 4.0 MeV, eleven of which were observed for the first time, and 78 new transitions were placed. Two octupole states (s1/2-coupled) are identified and three more states (d3/2-coupled) are tentatively assigned using spin-parity inferences, while further h11/2-coupled states may also have been observed for the first time. Comparisons are made with state-of-the-art large-scale shell model calculations and previous observations made in this region, and systematic underestimation of the energy of the octupole vibrational states is noted. We suggest that in order to resolve the difference in predicted energies for collective and noncollective t=1 states (t is the number of nucleons breaking the Pb208 core), the effect of t=2 mixing may be reduced for octupole-coupled states. The inclusion of mixing with t=0,2,3 excitations is necessary to replicate all t=1 state energies accurately.
