Abstract

Observing wear debris during friction is crucial for comprehending the wear behavior of lubrication systems. Despite various techniques attempted for observation, a persistent challenge is the oversight of wear debris with a diameter less than 1 μm, mainly due to limitations in measurement systems. Consequently, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of whether these small particles can infiltrate contact points and serve as abrasives. In this study, we conducted in-situ friction tests to investigate the entrainment of imitation wear particles at the contact point under boundary lubrication conditions. These imitation wear particles were glass beads with diameters of approximately 0.8 μm, 1.0 μm, and 3.0 μm, respectively. To address optical limitations, we stained these particles using silane coupling to attach Rhodamine B to the glass beads. We examined the effect of particle diameter on entrainment numbers under varying outside oil film thicknesses. The results showed that the entrainment number was highest when the outside oil film thickness matched the particle diameter. This clearly indicated that the outside oil film thickness significantly influenced the entrainment of particles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Older barnacle cyprids of the species Balanus amphitrite settle less successfully than younger cyprids after being subjected to temperature treatments of 15, 20 and 25 degrees centigrade. However, settlement differences due to age were hardly apparent at temperature treatments of five degrees centigrade. Gel electrophoresis analysis of cyprid protein extract indicates that much less of the cyprid storage protein Cyprid Major Protein exists in older cyprids at the higher temperature levels. 16. Perplexing distribution of 3-alkylpyridines in haplosclerid sponges

Abstract

In this study we reviewed the natural product literature for the distribution of 3-alkylpyridines among sponge taxa. In parallel, we traced selected 3-alkylpyridines, amphitoxins, in three haplosclerid genera (Amphimedon, Callyspongia, Haliclona) in order to establish the utility of such compounds as genuine chemotaxonomic markers. We confirmed that this group of compounds had been almost solely extracted from sponges of the order Haplosclerida. Three groups of compounds within the 3-alkylpyridine derivatives were noteworthy, as they appear to be concentrated in restricted taxonomic units within the order Haplosclerida: 1) polymers, 2) cyclic dimers, and 3) bicyclic dimers. There was a concentration of the polymer amphitoxin in the families Niphatidae and Callyspongiidae of the suborder Haplosclerina, and more particularly in the genera Amphimedon and Callyspongia. Our experimental results reconfirmed the presence of amphitoxin in Callyspongia (Euplacella) biru, but we were unable to trace any amphitoxins or 3-alkylpyridines of any kind in Callyspongia (Callyspongia) truncata, Haliclona sp., and Amphimedon aff. queenslandica. Assuming that these classifications are correct, our results diminish the value of both amphitoxins and 3-alkylpyridines as monophyletic markers.
