Abstract

Heart of a Peach and "Are We Such Savages?" Mary Beckett's Fiction and the Failure of Social Mobility' is a PhD thesis comprising two components: a novel and a critical essay. My novel, Heart of a Peach, is structured in two chronological parts: part one is set in Ardoyne, a Catholic working-class area in Belfast, 1981, the year Bobby Sands died, and part two in a university in London, 2005, the year of the London bombings. The two main characters are an ex-parachute regiment soldier who served in Belfast and who is now a porter, and a native woman of Ardoyne who is now an art history lecturer: both work at the same university. Thematically, the novel is concerned with: emotional and sexual repression, surveillance and public space and the failure of social mobility. These themes are further examined in my critical essay. Formally, the work combines realistic storytelling with experimental methods, and is written in close third person through a continuous present tense. The critical essay examines and discuss the work of Mary Beckett, (1926-2013), a Belfast-born writer whose small output of finely wrought short stories, radio plays and one novella make a shrewd contribution to the fictional narrative histories of Northern Irish working-class women. Beckett worked in Ardoyne, the same area of Belfast I write about in my novel. Looking at her two collections of short stories, A Belfast Woman and A Literary Woman together with her novel Give Them Stones, I address the overarching theme of the failure of social mobility in three chapters: 'Displacement', 'Desired Acts of Unfeminine Violence' and 'Shame and Belonging' drawing upon relevant fictional sources and first person oral history accounts from the period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. There is currently little substantive research on Beckett's work, save for a few interviews and brief mentions in larger survey works of Northern Irish writing; it is my aim therefore that my research will provide new and original knowledge in this area.

Abstract

The present essay traces the intertextual relationship between Breaking Bad and Macbeth looking at two main areas of structural correspondence. The first one consists in issues of rhythm, pace, and textual overlapping, with regard to which specific attention is given to scenes from the TV series that echo moments in the Shakespearean tragedy. The second area of analysis is constituted by the focus both works bring on the question of sovereign power. Through the lens offered by Agamben’s theory of the perturbing similarities between the structural positioning of the sovereign and the homo sacer at the margin of the law, the article looks at Macbeth’s and Walter White’s respective parabolas as attempts to attain sovereign power, while at the same time rejecting the inevitable implications such positioning brings with it., Memoria di Shakespeare. Abstract

ObjectiveEarly diagnosis of natalizumab-related progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (NTZ-PML) in multiple sclerosis has been deemed a major priority by the regulatory agencies but has yet to become a reality. The current paper aims to: (1) investigate whether patients with NTZ-PML pass through a prolonged presymptomatic phase with MRI abnormalities, (2) estimate the longitudinal PML lesion volume increase during the presymptomatic phase and (3) estimate the presymptomatic phase length and its impact on therapy duration as a risk stratification parameter.MethodsAll Italian patients who developed NTZ-PML between 2009 and 2018 were included. The data of patients with available prediagnostic MRI were analysed (n=41). Detailed clinical and neuroradiological information was available for each participant.Results(1) PML lesions were detectable in the presymptomatic phase in 32/41 (78%) patients; (ii) the lesion volume increased by 62.8 % for each month spent in the prediagnostic phase; (3) the prediagnostic phase length was 150.8±74.9 days; (4) PML MRI features were detectable before the 24th month of therapy in 31.7 % of patients in our cohort.ConclusionsConsidering the latency of PML clinical manifestation, the presymptomatic phase length supports the usefulness of MRI surveillance every 3–4 months. Early diagnosis could prompt a better outcome for patients due to the relationship between lesion volume and JC virus infection. The insight from this study might also have an impact on risk stratification algorithms, as therapy duration as a parameter of stratification appears to need reassessment.

Objective early diagnosis of natalizumab-related progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (NTZ-pML) in multiple sclerosis has been deemed a major priority by the regulatory agencies but has yet to become a reality.
