1. Separation of electrons from pions in GEM TRD using deep learning

Abstract

Machine learning (ML) is no new concept in the high-energy physics community, in fact, many ML techniques have been employed since the early 80s to deal with a broad spectrum of physics problems. In this paper, we present a novel technique to separate electrons from pions in the Gas Electron Multiplier Transition Radiation Detector (GEM TRD) using deep learning. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model is trained on the Monte Carlo data simulated using the ATHENA-based detector and simulation framework for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) experiment. The ANN model does a good job of separating electrons from pions.

Many current and future nuclear physics (NP) experiments across the United States have and are implementing micro-pattern gas detectors (MPGDs) to be used for tracking and PID purposes. MPGDs are capable of operating in high rate environments and providing excellent spatial resolution over a large-area with a low material budget. 3. Probing charged lepton flavor violation with a positron beam at CEBAF (JLAB)

Abstract

The addition of a high intensity 11 GeV polarized positron beam at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at JLAB would allow for a search of Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) via the process $e^+N \rightarrow \mu^+ X$. The proposed Solenoidal Large Intensity Detector (SoLID) spectrometer, in the configuration with muon chambers, would be ideal for such CLFV searches. Various new physics scenarios, including the phenomenologically convenient Leptoquark (LQ) framework, predict CLFV rates that are within reach of current or planned experiments. A positron beam with instantaneous luminosity, ${\cal L}\sim 10^{38}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, could improve on existing HERA limits by two or three orders of magnitude. Abstract

How the bulk of the Universe's visible mass emerges and how it is manifest in the existence and properties of hadrons are profound questions that probe into the heart of strongly interacting matter. Paradoxically, the lightest pseudoscalar mesons appear to be the key to the further understanding of the emergent mass and structure mechanisms. These mesons, namely the pion and kaon, are the Nambu-Goldstone boson modes of QCD. Unravelling their partonic structure and the interplay between emergent and Higgs-boson mass mechanisms is a common goal of three interdependent approaches -- continuum QCD phenomenology, lattice-regularised QCD, and the global analysis of parton distributions -- linked to experimental measurements of hadron structure. Experimentally, the foreseen electron-ion collider will enable a revolution in our ability to study pion and kaon structure, accessed by scattering from the "meson cloud" of the proton through the Sullivan process. With the goal of enabling a suite of measurements that can address these questions, we examine key reactions to identify the critical detector system requirements needed to map tagged pion and kaon cross sections over a wide range of kinematics. The excellent prospects for extracting pion structure function and form factor data are shown, and similar prospects for kaon structure are discussed in the context of a worldwide programme. Successful completion of the programme outlined herein will deliver deep, far-reaching insights into the emergence of pions and kaons, their properties, and their role as QCD's Goldstone boson modes., Comment: 73 pages, 27 figures

Abstract

We explore the feasibility of the measurement of charm-jet cross sections in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering at the future Electron-Ion Collider. This channel provides clean sensitivity to the strangeness content of the nucleon in the high-$x$ region. We estimate charm-jet tagging performance with parametrized detector simulations. We show the expected sensitivity to various scenarios for strange parton distribution functions. We argue that this measurement will be key to future QCD global analyses, so it should inform EIC detector designs and luminosity requirements., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables; added new plots showing PDF error bands in s(x,Q) and Rs(x,Q) to illustrate range of uncertainty on these quantities

Abstract

This volume is a collection of contributions for the 7-week program "Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions" that was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle, WA, USA, from October 1 until November 16, 2018. The program was dedicated to the physics of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the USA. Abstract

Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a particle accelerator facility planned for construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island, New York by the United States Department of Energy. EIC will provide capabilities of colliding beams of polarized electrons with polarized beams of proton and light ions. EIC will be one of the largest and most sophisticated new accelerator facilities worldwide, and the only new large-scale accelerator facility planned for construction in the United States in the next few decades. The versatility, resolving power and intensity of EIC will present many new opportunities to address some of the crucial and fundamental open scientific questions in particle physics. Abstract

In addition to the day-one primary Interaction Region (IR), the design of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) must support operation of a 2nd IR potentially added later. The 2nd IR is envisioned in an existing experimental hall at RHIC IP8, compatible with the same beam energy combinations as the 1st IR over the full center of mass energy range of ~20 GeV to ~140 GeV. The 2nd IR is designed to be complementary to the 1st IR. In particular, a secondary focus is added in the forward ion direction of the 2nd IR hadron beamline to optimize its capability in detecting particles with magnetic rigidities close to those of the ion beam. Abstract

We identify accelerator and beam conditions at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) that need to be included in physics and detector simulations. For our studies, we implement accelerator and beam effects in the Pythia 8 Monte Carlo event generator and examine their influence on the measurements in the central and far-forward regions of the detector. In our analysis, we demonstrate that the accelerator and beam effects can be also studied accurately by modifying the Monte Carlo input to detector simulations, without having to implement the effects directly in the event generators.

Abstract

The possibility of two interaction regions (IRs) is a design requirement for Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). There is also a significant interest from the nuclear physics community to have a 2nd IR with measurement capabilities complementary to those of the 1st IR. While the 2nd IR will be in operation over the entire energy range of ~20GeV to ~140GeV center of mass (CM). The 2nd IR can also provide an acceptance coverage complementary to that of the 1st. Abstract

Nuclear physics experiments envisioned at a proposed future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) require high luminosity of 10³³-10³⁴ cm⁻²s⁻¹ and a full-acceptance detector capable of reconstruction of a whole electron-ion collision event. Due to a large asymmetry in the electron and ion momenta in an EIC, the particles associated with the initial ion tend to go at very small angles and have small rigidity offsets with respect to the initial ion beam. They are detected after they pass through the apertures of the final focusing quadrupoles. Therefore, the apertures must be sufficiently large to provide the acceptance required by experiments. In addition, to maximize the luminosity, the final focusing quadrupoles must be placed as close to the interaction point as possible. A combination of these requirements presents serious detection, optics and engineering design challenges. We present a design of a full-acceptance interaction region of Jefferson Lab Electron-Ion Collider (JLEIC). The paper presents how this design addresses the above requirements up to an ion momentum of 200 GeV/c. We summarize the magnet parameters, which are kept consistent with the Nb-Ti superconducting magnet technology., Proceedings of the 10th Int.
