3. Best Practices for Model Calibration in Smartphone-based Indoor Positioning Systems

User location and tracking information are increasingly used for contact tracing and social community detection. In-door positioning and indoor navigation systems are reaching good performances in several realistic scenarios. After an evaluation exclusively done through simulations, nowadays, these systems are trying to reach robust performances and good accuracy in heterogeneous environments. Problems are manifold as each environment presents a structure that strongly affects inertial sensors and radio signal propagation. Generally, systems showing the best performances rely on an extended knowledge of the indoor map. Moreover, they implement a model for pedestrian dynamics in terms of e.g step length, stride and the behaviour of the target users. Experimental results obtained during realistic indoor competitions, clearly show that performances drop when such systems are used in unseen scenarios in which an external user test the proposed solution. In fact, many parameters that are generally calibrated and set to maximize the performances might not work as expected. In this paper, we highlight which best practices should be applied for model calibration in smartphone-based indoor positioning systems. We describe a reference system based on a particle filter, and we show the most relevant parameters and the main factors that are generally in common with all similar systems in the literature. We also present the Run-Once tool for reaching optimal parameters, highlighting those best practices that should be applied to indoor positioning systems to maximize their performances and improve their robustness.

In particolare, vengono presentati i vari standard di comunicazione radio per dispositivi IoT che sono stati integrati nella nostra piattaforma, e per ogni tecnologia vengono descritti i sensori ed attuatori che sono integrati nella piattaforma. Inoltre, viene descritta l'architettura software dei componenti che permettono di integrare le diverse tecnologie di comunicazione IoT (ZigBee, ZWave e 6LoWPAN) con il Middleware di comunicazione e gestione dei dati di tipo publish/subscribe che è stato adottato come riferimento per la piattaforma ICT di raccolta e gestione dei dati. Infine, viene descritta l'architettura software della dashboard, cioè una applicazione web il cui scopo principale è la visualizzazione e manipolazione, attraverso un'interfaccia web, delle serie temporali e dei metadati dei dispositivi (sensori e attuatori) di una rete di sensori.

The present report accompanies deliverable D3.3 "Software Building Blocks", resulting from Task T3.3 "Development of Building Blocks to Fill Gaps" of the VRE4EIC project. As the name of the tasks says, Task T 3.3 has received as inputs the Reference Architecture (D3.1), specifying the components of the enhanced VRE (e-VRE for short), and the Gap Analysis (D3.2), indicating which components needs to be implemented to fill the gaps in existing VREs. Based on these inputs, as well on the non-functional requirements collected in D2.1, Task T3.3 has designed a Technical Architecture for implementing the Reference Architecture, and has implemented the components of the Technical Architecture indicated by the Gap Analysis. These components will be taken as input by Task T3.4 "Integration of Reference VRE and Enhanced Existing VREs" to be integrated into the architectures of the EPOS and the ENVRIplus VREs (Task 3.4), thereby enhancing these VREs. D3.3 delivers the implemented components of the Technical Architecture, named "Building Blocks" (BBs from now on for short) for their role in the enhancement of the VREs.

Deliverable D4.3 describes the process of training, model selection and validation adopted to identify the most adequate setting (and fitting of the parameters) for the activity recognition components developed in WP4 and deployed in the DOREMI pilot phase. A detailed account of the experimental assessment of the expected performances on DOREMI laboratory data collected by task 6.1 (as per DoW) is provided. The deliverable also reports basic aggregated statistics on the data generated by the activity recognition and reasoning components during the DOREMI pilot experimental phases. Finally, it is provided a post-hoc assessment of the unsupervised exploratory data analysis and reasoning components following the UK pilots.

In this paper we present SIDEMAN, a service discovery algorithm that exploits human mobility patterns in Mobile Social Networks (MSN). SIDEMAN takes advantage of two aspects of MSN, namely, that users tend to form communities, and that users in the same community share interests for similar services. The performance of SIDEMAN has been evaluated through simulations in real and synthetic scenarios: A set of traces collected at IEEE Infocom 2006 and traces obtained from the HCMM mobility model, respectively.We have compared our algorithm to the social version of two popular discovery techniques, namely, flooding and gossiping. We investigated the following key metrics: How proactive an algorithm is in distributing services of interest (Recall); how many services are already with a user when s/he needs them (Gain); the energy cost necessary for service discovery; the time needed to reply to a service query, and the average number of services stored and exchanged. Our results show that in all considered scenarios SIDEMAN is remarkably effective in obtaining flawless Recall and a Gain that is always comparable to that of the other algorithms. Furthermore, most services are retrieved in reasonable time and at a remarkably lower energy cost than that of flooding and gossiping-based solutions.

B4.4 Performance Analysis and Design Aids. Verification ,Localization ,Tracking ,AAL ,Community building ,Open source - Abstract
AALOA, the Ambient Assisted Living Open source Association, was born to create an environment to foster initiatives linked to AAL. AALOA offers an environment where people and organizations can start an AAL project. Most projects are expected to be software projects, to be released using a Free / Libre / Opens Source software licence, but other types of activities, like research, conference organization, standardization and lobbying are envisioned as well. This paper illustrates the idea of the Ambient Assisted Living Open Association, the actions initiated by AALOA and those planned for the future. The main focus is on the exploitation possibilities which AALOA provides to the outcome of several European and non-European projects. A collaboration here would be a win-win situation. On one side, AALOA has already appropriate prominence and is linked to European strategies which can help to group people and associations around different project results and to position them in the right way and manner. On the other side AALOA is depending on the community and on the projects it hosts. To demonstrate this ambition and to give a demonstration for other European projects, the paper presents the identified exploitable results of the universAAL FP7 project and their planned incubation in AALOA.

In the recent past Smart Environments, and in particular Smart Homes, have attracted the attention of many re- searchers and industrial vendors. In such environments, according to the Ambient Intelligence paradigm, heterogeneous de- vices may operate collectively using context information and intelligence that is usually hidden in the home networks. The networks of ZigBee devices play an important role in this scenario. However they require an easier interaction model with IP- based networks. This work presents an open source platform that seamlessly integrates ZigBee devices with applications run- ning on smart phones and other connected devices available at home. It can be deployed on low-cost devices, such as Plug- PC, and it exploits the OSGi execution environment to discover devices and to notify the smart home of new available ser- vices1.

This work proposes an efficient proactive service discovery protocol that leverages the social behavior and the mobility of the people. The protocol is based on the concept that the service discovery performance is strongly affected by the mobility of the users and by their behavior along the time. Indeed, people generally have significant contacts with others like themselves with similar interests, hence they could be interested on similar services. We present simulation results that show that our protocol achieves increased efficiency in discovering services (compared to traditional broadcast-based mechanisms) by efficiently using bandwidth, thus decreasing the energy consumption.

It is a practical, short guide to the FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) communities and introduces the software commodity and coopetition concepts, which are used to justify the needs of a convergence process towards a common shared platform for AAL. These concepts in addition to the AAL market fragmentation are the essence of the call for action expressed from the Manifesto of AALOA, which is reported in the appendix A. This document clarifies also the changes to the initial strategy of universAAL for creating a community of interested developers around its own platform as proposed in Description of Work. AALOA does not represent the specific community of universAAL project. AALOA will be the community of communities and universAAL will be one of those communities working in synergy for preparing the AAL market breakthrough. The document additionally reports about the status of the AALOA community, the current governing board composition, the communication infrastructures and tools activated, and the list of projects already incubated in AALOA. It sketches a road map for the association and gives an overview on what one should expect from it.

This document reports on the second prototype of the system that is going to be deployed and installed at 6 test sites. The second prototype at month 18 provides the Giraff robot and the sensors integrated in a flexible and robust communication infrastructure. A middleware solution helps to integrate the software components developed by the WP3 and WP4 and enhanced Giraff platform with safer and semi-autonomous mobility features. Currently the prototype includes the Giraff robot, the Look4Myhealth kit, the monitoring sensors from Tunstall, additional environmental sensors, a physiological sensor for pulse oximetry measurements based on Android, the context recognition and configuration planning modules, and the remote storage and repository to collect user data. A new olfactory sensor is also considered that can be placed in strategic location like the fridge or near the garbage can and give alarms if needed. A new version of the middleware is presented and the semi-autonomy features for the giraffe robot are described.

This document is produced as part of the Deliverable n°1 of the contract n°6/2013 between Institute of Information Science and Technologies, Italian National Research Council (CNR-ISTI) and Telecom Italia (TI). In particular, with respect to the technical part of the contract, this document analyzes the current status of ZigBee Specification proposed by the OSGi Alliance, and it highlights the weakness of the current abstraction layer prosed by the OSGi Alliance in the RFC-192. Moreover, we defined a set of solution to overcome the lack of important feature from RFC-192 for abstracting the ZigBee network, and as part of the contract CNR-ISTI and TI are elaborating an official proposal to the OSGi Alliance for integrating the proposed solution. It is worth to notice that all the features that we mentioned in this document are selected because they are needed for supporting real life scenario of ZigBee network, so they are extremely important for enabling the wide spreading the RFC-192 standard and avoid the blooming of several vendor driven solution which, as result, would lock the gateway provider to a particular provider for its own gateway solution.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are supposed to be widely deployed in indoor settings and on people's bodies in tomorrow's pervasive computing environments. The key idea of this work is to leverage their presence by collecting the Received Signal Strength (RSS) measured among fixed general purpose wireless sensor devices, deployed in the environment, and a wearable one. The RSS measurements are used to classify a set of user's positions in the bed, monitoring the activities of the user, and thus supporting the bedsores and the sleep monitoring issues. Moreover, the proposed services are able to decrease the energy consumption by exploiting the context information coming from the proposed middleware.

Robotic ecologies often comprise a large number of envi- ronmental sensors and actuators, that, on the other hand, operate by means of their proper standards, among which ZigBee is one of the most widely used. Being designed to build autonomous sensor networks, the use of sensors based on ZigBee requires a deep knowledge of its logic and protocols. In order to facilitate interoperability between ZigBee sen- sors and external applications we designed ZB4O, an application-level gateway that exports ZigBee services in external networks. This paper describes the experience of integration of ZB4O and ZigBee networks within the robotic ecology GiraffPlus which is being developed within the EU project GiraffPlus.

The goal of universAAL is defining and implementing a reference architecture and platform for AAL applications that becomes widely accepted in the whole AAL community, and to define and realize on such platform a number of services that prove its validity and open business opportunities. To do that, it is essential that the universAAL architecture, platform, and services are supported by communities of different stakeholders (ranging from developers to industries, service providers, end users, etc.) that guarantee a development of universAAL even after the end of the project. For this reason universAAL implements tasks that realize specific community building strategies for different sets of stakeholders (such as tasks 8.1, 8.2, and 8.4). The EvAAL competition (Evaluating AAL Systems through Competitive Benchmarking), which is implemented in Task 8.5 and described in this deliverable, supports the community building activities. In fact, EvAAL has the role of expanding the community and attracting stakeholders around the universAAL architecture and platform. The evaluation and comparison of complex AAL systems is still far from being a reality, this implies that, at the present, the universAAL architecture and platform can hardly be compared with other solutions, and thus even the impact of new solutions and strategies to be adopted in the universAAL development can hardly be evaluated. EvAAL aims at advancing the state of the art in the evaluation and comparison of AAL platforms and architectures. In particular, one of the goals of the EvAAL competition is to generate an environment in which the researchers, students, and even industries can compare their solutions and exchange ideas on which such comparisons may become feasible. For this reason, EvAAL adopts a step by step approach, by dividing the problem into smaller pieces. First, it promotes competitions on specific topics in order to create a large data set and to create benchmarks and evaluation methodologies, then EvAAL will be able to evaluate and compare more complex (and even complete) AAL solutions. From the point of view of WP 2, 3, and 4, (development work package of universAAL) the creation of data sets, benchmarks, and evaluation methodologies, achieved by EvAAL, will become the mean to evaluate the quality of their findings, thus EvAAL results are also inputs for the validation work package (WP5). Moreover, EvAAL will also promote the use of the universAAL platform since it will base the benchmarking and evaluation of competing artefacts on the tools and platform developed in WP2 and WP3.

To address this, we founded the AALOA (AAL Open Association). The vision of AALOA is to create a ecosystem for the domain of assistive technology for independent living. Community building activities as well as the hosting of AAL related projects like EvAAL and several open source software projects1 has been used to attract different stakeholders of the AAL community. Two main initiatives for the AALOA community building and promotion of the idea among all stakeholder groups has been brought forth so far. The AMB11 workshop, organised together with the eInclusion unit of the EC and the Lecce Declaration, which gained support from 44 projects mostly at the EU level.

Deliverable 1.2 defines and presents the universAAL Reference Architecture Requirements and the process of requirements collection and consolidation. In universAAL, reference architecture requirements drive the development of universAAL's reference and concrete architecture that are described and defined in D1.3 "universAAL Reference Architecture". Requirements act as the central point of reference in software development like a contract between the involved parties. In essence, they capture the functional and non-functional expectations from the tar- get system, on one side, and the general concerns of users and stakeholders that deal with the system, on the other side. Hence, requirements glue the concerns defined by users to the target system that is implemented by the developers. As a consequence, at the very end of software development, the success of a software system or application is measured according to its compliance to the requirements. The universAAL consortium has agreed on using the ARCADE architecture development framework1 to guide development of the universAAL reference architecture in WP1. Developing the architecture according to the ARCADE approach enhances architectural consistency, enables integration of other systems and ensures that concerns and requirements of stakeholders are properly acknowledged. Considering the ARCADE method, this deliverable will present the Requirements View on the universal architecture. ARCADE's Requirement Viewpoint specifies two models for identifying and specifying requirements: the Requirement Model and the Target System Interface Model. Consequently, D1.2 specifies these two models.

The purpose of the chapter "Target Groups" is to identify main dissemination target groups, to describe their interests and to specify methods to address these interests. "Dissemination activities" describes initiatives and strategies taken with the aim of spreading out the project. The AALOA community is a key element to guarantee the acceptance of universAAL results and their adoption after the end of the project. A section of this document is dedicated to the dissemination of the AALOA community. Dissemination monitoring and evaluation is needed in order to track the number and quality of dissemination activities throughout the whole project, as well as throughout individual partners. This section introduces the required templates and establishes the approach toward dissemination consisting of regular updates and evaluation of the templates by a group of experts. Finally, this document presents the individual dissemination plans for each partner of the universAAL consortium.

General project presentation . PowerPoint template . Newsletter The universAAL website is the main starting point for people interested in the project. It describes the project objectives, related news and events, as well as providing detailed information of the different project parts. It includes links to and information about the universAAL developer depot and the uStore. Additionally the AALOA website is maintained by the universAAL consortium within the project runtime, a work shared by work packages 8 & 9. The plan is to move the site to AALOA once the project is concluded. The universAAL leaflet and brochure give a general overview of the project and are intended for being handed out at conferences and exhibitions. In order to enable a consistent dissemination WP9 furthermore provides a generic PowerPoint template that is to be used for all project related presentations, as well as a general universAAL presentation that is intended to streamline the introduction to the project on certain events and accordingly help the different presenters.

This document reports on the first prototype of the system deployed and installed at month 12 in the pilot apartment A?ngen in O?rebro. It is an integration of the information already reported in the Deliverable 5.1 which describes the preliminary technological integration achieved at month 9. In addition to that deliverable this document provides a refinement of the initial system architecture according the feedback obtained during the implementation phase, and updates the status of development of the WP2. An analysis of security and privacy requirements regarding collecting, processing and transferring of personal information is also presented. Currently the prototype includes the Giraff robot, the Look4Myhealth kit, the monitoring sensors from Tunstall, additional environmental sensors, a physiological sensor for pulse oximetry measurements based on Android, the context recognition and configuration planning modules, and the remote storage and repository to collect user data. An initial version of the middleware is also present. The final version of the middleware will be available at month 18 (Deliverable D2.2) when the development of the several modules composing the system is more mature and all the technical requirements completed.

The GiraffPlus project aims at developing a system that addresses the above challenges. The system consists of a network of home sensors which e.g. are measuring blood pressure or detecting if someone falls off a chair. The data is then interpreted in terms of activities, health and well-being, such as if the person is relaxed or need to go to bed. Events can trigger alerts or reminders to a healthcare provider, or be analyzed by a healthcare professional. A telepresence robot, Giraff, can be moved around in the home of someone who is online via the Internet, e.g. a caregiver or family member, and helps the user to keep their social connections alive. The GiraffPlus project aims to contribute to a reduction in healthcare costs as many health ailments can be addressed in an early stage of on-set. For the elderly, the concept presented in this proposal provides a tool to address concerns about isolation and safety by encouraging social contact and thereby increasing quality of life and possibilities to prolong independent living. For the caregiver, the specific technologies developed in this project allow for continuous information about the status of the elderly, encourage a meaningful interaction concerning patient well-being, enable timely involvement, provide time effective care and not least lead to economical savings.
