Differences are expected to arise for sexually dimorphic species exposed to distinct ecological opportunities, as well as intrinsic differences in physiological abilities or energetic requirements. We assess seasonal and sexual differences in isotopic niche overlap and width and analyze inter-individual foraging variation throughout the year of the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis). We obtained chronologically ordered δ13C and δ15N data from vibrissae of 25 males and 24 females from southern Brazil and Uruguay. There were significant differences between sexes for both isotopes with males showing higher values (δ13C = − 14.5 ± 0.5‰; δ15N = 18.9 ± 1.2‰) than females (δ13C = − 15.2 ± 0.5‰; δ15N = 17.8 ± 1.2‰), but not among seasons or years. A very small isotopic niche overlap found between sexes (1.1–9.5%), with limited seasonal variation, likely resulted from differences in prey consumption and foraging habitats. Compared to other seasons, females had a wider isotopic niche in spring. While males showed seasonal stability in the foraging niche, females showed some small variation, which is probably influenced by central place foraging. Both sexes had considerable interindividual variation in estimated dietary composition and had different proportions of potential prey contribution at the population level. These findings enlighten the knowledge of South American fur seal trophic ecology, and how they may seasonally and spatially shift their foraging strategies according to their distinct life histories. It ultimately reflects in a small niche partitioning and possibly low intraspecific competition at the species northernmost area of occurrence in the western South Atlantic. Aim.To perform a morphological study of seal lice (Anoplura: Echinophthiriidae) of the genus Antarctophthirus Enderlein, 1906 taken from Northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus L., 1758) at Tyuleniy Island, Okhotsk Sea, Russia).Material and Methods. Seal lice were collected from the nasal passages of Northern fur seal C. ursinus pups during a scheduled ecological and virological expedition to Tyuleniy Island in August 2017. Fourteen samples of seal lice (11 imago males, 1 imago female, 1 nymph of the 2nd age, 1 nymph of the 3-rd age) were stored in 70% ethanol at room temperature from the time of collection until the start of the study. Morphological features of the insects were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy and compared with the available data in the scientific literature.Results.Unique patterns of the arrangement of spines were found in the examined samples that is a sufficient species feature for representatives of this family and allows the identification of a new species of seal lice.Conclusion.A new species of seal lice, Antarctophthirus nevelskoyi n.sp., was identified and described and named after the famous Russian explorer of the Far East, Admiral Gennady Ivanovich Nevelskoy (18131876).

The study of the population status of Arctocephalus gazella (Peters, 1875) in waters of the Argentine Islands was carried out in the period from April 2015 to March 2016 in accordance with the objectives of the State Target Scientific and Technical Research Program of Ukraine in Antarctica for 2011–2020. The aim of the article is to study the population dynamics and distribution of the southern fur seal in waters of the Argentine Islands. Due to the lack of data on the specifics of the seal’s dispersal in different periods of the year and the dynamics of the species population at the southern border of the distribution range, the results of the research are relevant and of great importance. In the second half of the 20th century, some publications presented the results of monitoring of pinnipeds at the Argentine Islands and adjacent territories, but the objects of these studies usually were other seal species: Hydrurga leptonyx, Lobodon carcinophagus, Leptonychotes weddelli, and Mirounga leonina. In the early 21st century, monitoring of the fauna of the Argentine Islands was carried out by Ukrainian biologists. However, they focused on Leptonychotes weddelli and less on other species of pinnipeds. The field material was collected in waters of the Argentine Islands, which is located in the Pacific sector of Antarctica. The fur seal population census and distribution studies were conducted according to the generally accepted methods. After breeding season on the subantarctic islands, during the migration southwards, fur seals reach the Argentine Islands, usually in the third decade of January. In the summer of 2016, the first fur seal was recorded within the archipelago on 31 January. During the study period, the largest number of animals within the archipelago was recorded in March–April and it ranged from 300 to 400 individuals. On the islands of the archipelago, the main resting places of seals were identified. The movement of animals northwards starts in May, consequently a decrease in the number of animals in this region is observed at that time. The last individuals are recorded in the first half of August. In 2015, migration began in May and ended in early August. There are several periods that were characterized by intensive migration of the animals: late June, 5–8 July, and 29 July to 6 August. In winter, one individual was last found within the archipelago on 12 August. The migration is launched by the worsening of weather conditions, formation of a continuous ice cover, reduced availability of food, and other factors.

As large carnivores recover from over-exploitation, managers often lack evidence-based information on species habitat requirements and the efficacy of management practices, particularly where species repopulate areas from which they have long been extirpated. We investigated the movement and habitat use by 2 semi-aquatic carnivores (Australian fur seals Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus and New Zealand fur seals A. forsteri) at the northern end of their distributions in Australia, where after a long absence both are recolonising their historic range. We also assessed male fur seal habitat use overlap with terrestrial and marine protected areas (PAs). While at the margin of the range during winter and early spring, the males remained inshore close to terrestrial sites and where interactions with humans often occur. From early spring, the males from the range margin showed uniform movement toward colonies in the core of the species’ range prior to their breeding seasons. This contrasts with males tracked from the core of the species’ range that returned periodically to colonies during the year, and highlights the importance of range-wide monitoring of a species to inform conservation planning. Habitat use by some males included over 90% of a marine PA at the margin of the species’ range. Most terrestrial haul-outs used were within terrestrial PAs, while sites not protected were on the margin of the range. Despite wide-ranging habits, their dependence on coastal sites, where human access and activities can be regulated and more readily enforced, suggests that terrestrial and marine PAs will continue to play an important role in managing the recovery of these fur seals.

The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), occupying tundra habitats with highly variable resource distribution, is a convenient research model for studying the impact of food availability on space use. Previous studies have shown that the Arctic fox home ranges can vary from 4 to 125 km2. In areas with abundant food resources, home range sizes are smaller and overlap increases. It is theoretically assumed that with an excess of resources, territoriality should disappear. We investigated a fox settlement at the Northern fur seal rookery on Bering Island (North Pacific). We used GPS collars to track nine foxes in the summer of 2014 and 2016. GPS locations were recorded at 5-min intervals. In the home range estimation, we used the Brownian bridge movement model. We also calculated home range sizes using 100% minimum convex polygon (MCP100) and 95% fixed kernel methods to compare our results with previous studies. Home ranges were extremely small with an average of 0.5 km2 (range of 0.2–0.9 km2) by Brownian Bridge and 0.7 km2 (0.3–1.4 km2) by MCP100. We revealed no sex differences in home range size but discovered strong differentiation of activity spatial concentration between males and females. We found a surprisingly small overlap between neighboring foxes, reflecting high territoriality. This runs counter to the trend expected with an overabundant food source. We assume that the combination of the super small size of the home ranges and their exclusivity may be a feature of the island fox land tenure system, which prevents inbreeding and deters infanticide.

The genetic diversity of populations is the basis for individual fitness and potential adaptability to environmental changes. The South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) is a pinniped species that is widely distributed along the southern cone of South America. However, two distinct populations have evolved: the Northern Pacific/Peruvian population and the Southern Pacific/Atlantic population. One of the main breeding colonies of the Southern Pacific/Atlantic population is located on Guafo Island, in southern Chilean Patagonia. This breeding colony represents the closest reproductive population to the remote Peruvian group. Therefore, our study aimed to determine whether the Guafo colony may potentially facilitate gene flow, contribute new alleles, and increase genetic variability of the Peruvian populations, thereby linking the Northern and Southern Pacific populations for the species. In this study, species‐specific microsatellite markers were developed to genetically characterize Guafo Island's South American fur seal population. Our results confirm that the Guafo colony is a panmictic population with evidence of lack of genetic structure. Further, our results indicate that most individuals are unrelated and that half‐siblings are rare, suggesting that polygyny in this species is less frequent than previously thought. Finally, based on the identification of multiple pairs of full siblings, we also present the first genetic evidence of twins in South American fur seals. These attributes suggest that the Guafo colony is a large, panmictic population, which could act as a potential genetic reservoir, and ultimately assist in linking two genetically distinct populations.

The duration of maternal foraging trips has been regarded as an indicator of foraging conditions in many marine mammals, including northern fur seals Callorhinus ursinus (NFS). However, previous work has focused on individual variation, was conducted during limited portions of the lactation period, and/or reached conclusions based on relatively small sample sizes. Here, we build upon the substantial foundations of this previous work to establish maternal foraging trip duration (MFTD) as an index of foraging success at the rookery level. We found that a 1 d increase in rookery-averaged MFTD corresponded to a 6.52% reduction in the average mass of female pups. Furthermore, rookery-averaged MFTD increased by 0.34 d per 1°C increase in average ocean bottom temperature. The magnitude of variation observed in both MFTD and pup mass is likely too small to help explain the general decline in population size seen over recent decades. However, the correlation between rookery-averaged MFTD and pup mass highlights the potential power of the MFTD index to detect bottom-up effects on pup growth, a likely indicator of survival. Furthermore, when compared with concurrently conducted studies on prey distribution, availability, and quality, the relationship between MFTD and bottom temperature suggests a northward shift in distribution of NFS preferred prey, walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus, that is associated with an increase in trip duration across the study period. Thus, rookery-averaged MFTD is a promising metric for tracking broad environmental changes, such as northerly shifts in the Eastern Bering Sea cold pool.

Objectives Here, we present the first record of stable colonies of the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis), in an area where their presence has never been documented (hereafter distribution gap), as well as an update of the current distribution range of the species in central Chile. Results A national synoptic aerial census of pinnipeds was performed during the austral summer of 2019 on the Chilean coast. An additional aerial census was conducted in the same area during the austral spring of 2019 as well as a maritime census during the austral summer of 2020. The data showed the presence of South American fur seals in central Chile within their well-known distribution gap. The total abundance was registered in three colonies where fur seals were sighted: one non-breeding colony, Punta Topocalma (summer 2019: mean = 46 ± 3; spring 2019: mean = 9 ± 1); and two breeding colonies, Punta Curaumilla (summer 2019: mean = 595 ± 7; spring 2019: mean = 45 ± 4; summer 2020: mean = 744 ± 5) and Isla Santa María (summer 2019: mean = 246 ± 6). Specifically, we suggest that it is crucial to elucidate the origin of the described settled colonies, and to determine whether there has been an augment in the distribution range from either the northern population, the southern population, or both simultaneously.

The South American fur seal, Arctocephalus australis, is a common Otariidae species, and it is widely distributed on the Atlantic and Pacific rocky coasts and off-shore islands of South America. Despite information about genetic characteristics of some fur seals had been published, the genetic information of A. australis is limit and there is still no its complete mitochondrial genome report. In present study, the complete mitochondrial genome of A. australis was determined and the size of genome is 16,579 bp. It contains 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes and two rRNA genes, and one displacement loop (D-loop) region. The A+T content of the A. australis is 59.2% (A = 33.1%; C = 26.7%; G = 14.1%; T = 26.1%). The PCGs of A. australis (11,394 bp) encode 3,798 amino acids. The 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA mitochondrial genes of A. australis are encoded on the heavy strand, with 960 bp and 1,577 bp, respectively. The tRNA genes range in size from 59 to 76 bp. The origin region of replication on the light strand (OL) is located in 5186–5218 bp. The D-loop region located between the tRNA-Pro gene and tRNA-Phe gene is 1,121 bp in length. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that A. australis belongs to the family Otariidae and has a close relationship with Arctocephalus forsteri.

Currently, the Galapagos sea lion (GSL, Zalophus wollebaeki) and Galapagos fur seal (GFS, Arctocephalus galapagoensis) are among the most important endemic species for conservation in the Galapagos Archipelago. Both are classified as “Endangered” since their populations have undergone drastic declines over the last several decades. In this study we estimated the abundance of both otariids, and their population trends based using counts conducted between 2014 and 2018 in all their rookeries, and we analyzed the influence of environmental variability on pup production. The GSL population size in 2018 in the archipelago was estimated to be between 17,000 to 24,000 individuals and has increased at an average annual rate of 1% over the last five years after applying correction factors. The highest number of GSL counted in the archipelago was in 2014 followed by a population decline of 23.8% in 2015 that was associated with the El Niño event that occurred during that year. Following this event, the population increased mainly in the northern, central and southeastern rookeries. The GSL pup abundance showed a decreasing trend with the increase in intensity of the El Niño. The GFS population in 2018 was counted in 3,093 individuals and has increased at an annual rate of 3% from 2014 to 2018. A high number of GFS counted in 2014 was followed by a population decrease of 38% in 2015, mainly in the western rookeries. There was interannual population fluctuations and different growth trends among regions of the archipelago. GSL and GFS pup abundance has a strong decreasing tendency with the increase in the subthermocline temperature (ST) and the El Niño 1 + 2 index. Our results provide evidence that both species are highly vulnerable to periodic oceanographic-atmospheric events in the Galapagos Archipelago which impact prey abundance and the flow of energy in the unique Galapagos ecosystem.

Some top predator populations in the South Atlantic and South Indian oceans are in decline, presumably contingent upon reduced food availability, precipitated by climate change. This phenomenon impacts on the positions of major ocean frontal zones which are hypothesised to act as natural dispersal borders for fish in the Southern Ocean. We investigate this hypothesis by establishing the fish diet of sub-Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus tropicalis, at Tristan da Cunha Island (37°15′S, 12°25′W) and Gough Island (40°19′S, 9°57′W), South Atlantic Ocean. The diets of these island populations, located on either side of the Subtropical Convergence, are compared with published dietary information from populations further south on islands located within the Polar Frontal Zone. To this end, fur seal scats were collected and analysed for remains of hard parts from prey in 2012–2013. The myctophid fish Gymnoscopelus piabilis, Protomyctophum tenisoni and Symbolophorus barnardi predominated in the diet. Lampichthys gemellarii, Myctophum aurolaternatum, S. barnardi and the Diaphus genus are recorded for the first time in the diet of A. tropicalis. Sub-Antarctic fur seal populations clustered around the Subtropical Convergence (~ 41°40′S), compared with those in the Polar Frontal Zone (~ 47°25′S to ~ 50°47′S), showed a considerable difference in the myctophid fish prey taken. The latitudinal differences in the fish diet of sub-Antarctic fur seals support suggestions that major frontal zones act as natural dispersal borders for fish in the Southern Ocean.

Knowledge of extra-limital movements of seals improves our understanding of species’ dispersal and dispersion abilities and patterns, and perhaps environmental changes. Canvassing and internet literature searches revealed the sighting of a vagrant adult male sub-Antarctic fur seal Arctocephalus tropicalis on the coast adjacent to George Town (7° 56′ S, 14° 25′ W), Ascension Island, in 2010. Although finer details of the sighting are sketchy, this is the first sighting of any seal at Ascension Island, and the northernmost sighting on record for the species on the mid-Atlantic Ridge islands. The likely source of the vagrant is the population at Gough Island (40° 20′ S, 9° 54′ W) some 3624 km further south in the Atlantic. The vagrant likely moved westward from Gough Island to the Brazilian coast, then northwards in coastal waters, eventually reaching Ascension Island.

Although the causes have not been specified yet, wild populations of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) have been decreasing, which is why conservation techniques such as captive breeding and health maintenance should be established. Hematological parameters can be used to maintain the health status of northern fur seals kept in captivity for artificial reproduction and public education. Year-round fluctuations of blood parameters have not been examined for northern fur seals due to the difficulties in obtaining serial blood samples from wild animals during the oceanic migration period from late autumn to spring. In this study, blood samples were collected from four captive northern fur seals and analyzed monthly for more than three years to clarify the seasonal fluctuation patterns in 14 hematological parameters. Many hematological parameters seemed to be seasonal patterns: summer-autumn and winter-spring; leukocyte-related parameters were higher in summer and autumn than in winter and spring; erythrocyte-related parameters were lower in summer and autumn than in winter and spring. Significant seasonal differences in nine of the 14 parameters were observed using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) analysis. These results have improved our understanding of the seasonal patterns of hematological characteristics in the northern fur seal and can contribute to the health care of protected or captive northern fur seals.

[Extract] The Guadalupe fur seal (GFS; Arctocephalus philip-pii townsendi) and Juan Fernandez fur seal (JFFS; Arctocephalus philippii philippii) have a restricted distribution to islands in the North and South Pacific Ocean, respectively. GFS only breeds in Mexico, concentrating its population on Guadalupe and the San Benito Islands (Figure 1), with a regional abundance of around 40,000 individuals (Garcia-Aguilar et al., 2018; Hernandez-Camacho & Trites, 2018), while JFFS is limited to the Juan Fernandez Archipelago in Chile (Figure 1), with an estimated population of 20,000 animals (Osman, 2007). Both species were considered extinct by the end of the 1800s because of intense commercial hunting (Townsend, 1931; Hubbs & Norris, 1971). However, a small number of GFS and JFFS were discovered breeding on Guadalupe Island in 1954 and Alejandro Selkirk Island in 1965, respectively (Hubbs, 1956; Bahamonde, 1966). These populations grew slowly and colonized other nearby islands over time (Goldsworthy et al., 2000; Aurioles-Gamboa et al., 2010), surviving in caves or on inaccessible beaches, thereby maintaining their populations and probably facilitating the increase of their genetic diversity (Goldsworthy et al., 2000).

We present estimates of the seasonal and spatial occupation by pinnipeds of the Wildlife Refuge of Ilha dos Lobos (WRIL), based on aerial photographic censuses. Twenty aerial photographic censuses were analysed between July 2010 and November 2018. To assess monthly differences in the numbers of pinnipeds in the WRIL we used a Generalized Linear Mixed Model. Spatial analysis was carried out using Kernel density analysis of the pinnipeds on a grid plotted along the WRIL. Subadult male South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) were the most abundant pinniped in the WRIL. Potential females of this species were also recorded during half of the census. The maximum number of pinnipeds observed in the WRIL was 304 in September 2018, including an unexpected individual southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina), and a high number of South American fur seal yearlings (Arctocephalus australis). However, there was no statistically significant difference in counts between months. In all months analysed, pinnipeds were most often found concentrated in the northern portion of the island, with the highest abundances reported in September. This study confirms the importance of the WRIL as a haulout site for pinnipeds in Brazil, recommends that land research and recreational activities occur in months when no pinnipeds are present, and encourages a regulated marine mammal-based tourism during winter and spring months. Behavioral foraging differences are known to aid in food resource partitioning in pinniped communities, but it is not known whether skull biomechanical efficiency also contributes to dietary niche partitioning. We tested this hypothesis in a community of four sympatric species of pinnipeds that co-occur along the coast of Baja California: California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris), harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), and Guadalupe fur seal (Arctocephalus townsendi). We tested whether their preferred prey items differed in resistivity to puncture and whether those differences were linked to the mass of the muscles of mastication and the biomechanical efficiency with which they can puncture prey items. For each prey species, we measure resistivity to puncture using texture profile analysis. We found that M. angustirostris consumes the most resistant prey and that A. townsendi consumes the least resistant. We estimated physiological cross-sectional area of the muscles of mastication for each pinniped and found that the same pair of species respectively has the largest and smallest theoretical value of muscular force. Finally, we estimated the bite force that each pinniped species requires to puncture its prey by solving Euler-Lagrange equations based on biomechanical lever model parameters measured from 3D digital models of the skulls. We also found differences in efficiency between the species. These data allowed us to classify the three ecomorphological types. Type 1 features a hydrodynamic skull with relatively low mandibular forces, characteristic of pelagic carnivore feeders such as A. townsendi. Type 2, represented by Z. californianus and M. angustirostris (both opportunistic feeders), is characterized by broad insertion areas for the mandibular muscles and strong teeth, permitting these predators to vary the prey target species as a function of prey availability. Type 3 features a less robust skull and a lower muscle efficiency, characteristic of benthic feeders such as P. vitulina. This evidence indicates that biomechanical differences between the species contribute to dietary niche construction.

Knowledge of animal foraging behaviour has implications for management and conservation. While Cape fur sealsArctocephalus pusillus pusilluscomprise a major proportion of the southern African marine predator biomass, little is known about their at-sea movements. We investigated foraging distribution, habitat use and diving behaviour for 35 adult female Cape fur seals from 3 breeding colonies experiencing contrasting oceanographic regimes. Animals from Black Rocks, the smallest and eastern-most colony, undertook shorter foraging trips and utilised shallower waters over the shelf. In comparison, animals from the larger west coast colonies, at Kleinsee and False Bay, travelled further and utilised deeper shelf and shelf-slope waters. However, across colonies, females typically preferred depths of 22°C). Dive behaviour was similar between Kleinsee and False Bay individuals (unavailable from Black Rocks), with both pelagic and benthic foraging evident. Diel patterns were apparent at both sites, as dive depth and benthic diving increased significantly during daylight hours, likely reflecting vertical movements of prey species. We provide the first assessment of Cape fur seal movement behaviour for the South African component of the population. Observed geographic differences likely reflect the availability of suitable habitat but may also indicate differences in foraging strategies and density-dependent effects throughout the range of this species.

Ornithogenic soils in Antarctica provide a biological archive of the occupation history and trophic ecology of penguins and other marine species over geological timescales. Hard prey remains and predator tissues, which are well preserved in ornithogenic soils, can act as paleoecological proxies of past environmental conditions. Here we examine ornithogenic soils from an active colony of Pygoscelis spp. penguins on Platter Island in the Danger Islands Archipelago along the northeastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula. We radiocarbon dated penguin tissues from excavated ornithogenic soils and parameterized an age-depth model of penguin occupation history. Hard prey remains were enumerated and recovered Pygoscelis spp. penguin and Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) tissues were analyzed for stable isotopes carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) analysis. The oldest recovered ornithogenic soils at Platter Island date to 502–653 years BP and coincide with the start of a period of increased warming and glacial discharge in the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula. Penguin tissues δ15N values increased between the oldest and youngest dated ornithogenic soils but seal tissues did not. This may indicate that the trophic level of penguins, but not seals, has increased over time, a hypothesis supported by the concurrent increase in the hard prey remains of fish and squid taxa common to penguin diets recovered from ornithogenic soils. Future studies of ornithogenic soils in the Danger Islands Archipelago are warranted to test this hypothesis and assess the potential confounding effects of varying ecosystem isotopic baselines and penguin species composition over time.

Non-invasive tracking the on-shore occurrence of the atypically pigmented animals and determination of land residency duration of leucistic seals would help us find out more about the rotation of the migrating population. During seven austral summer seasons (2011–2018), by counting the animals every 10 days at the Cape Lions Rump shore, King George Island, South Shetlands, in the Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 151 and the adjacent ice-free land (31.52 km2) we registered fourteen leucistic individuals per a total of 43,919 animals. Moreover, daily monitoring of local fauna resulted in further 33 leucistic animals (together 47, in all seasons). Whilst the results of 10-day censuses of the total population were similar inter-seasonally, a tendency for increased occurrence of leucistic individuals in successive seasons was revealed. Generally, the number of animals increased significantly as season progressed. Since leucistic individuals stayed on-shore for 1–2 days usually, it can be hypothesised that the observation of migrating Antarctic fur seals every 3 days does not involve the same individuals. Also, additional every 5-day censuses taken in one season in ASPA 151 resulted in a higher seasonal number of animals, which proves that more frequent counts help us estimate population abundance more efficiently. Thus, every 5-day counts are proposed as a feasible and justified method of population monitoring.

Sexual segregation has important ecological implications, but its initial development in early life stages is poorly understood. We investigated the roles of size dimorphism, social behavior, and predation risk on the ontogeny of sexual segregation in Antarctic fur seal, Arctocephalus gazella, pups at South Georgia. Beaches and water provide opportunities for pup social interaction and learning (through play and swimming) but increased risk of injury and death (from other seals, predatory birds, and harsh weather), whereas tussock grass provides shelter from these risks but less developmental opportunities. One hundred pups were sexed and weighed, 50 on the beach and 50 in tussock grass, in January, February, and March annually from 1989 to 2018. Additionally, 19 male and 16 female pups were GPS-tracked during lactation from December 2012. Analysis of pup counts and habitat use of GPS-tracked pups suggested that females had a slightly higher association with tussock grass habitats and males with beach habitats. GPS-tracked pups traveled progressively further at sea as they developed, and males traveled further than females toward the end of lactation. These sex differences may reflect contrasting drivers of pup behavior: males being more risk prone to gain social skills and lean muscle mass and females being more risk averse to improve chances of survival, ultimately driven by their different reproductive roles. We conclude that sex differences in habitat use can develop in a highly polygynous species prior to the onset of major sexual size dimorphism, which hints that these sex differences will increasingly diverge in later life., Sexual segregation is common in the animal kingdom, but how it develops is rarely studied. Small sex differences in habitat use occur in Antarctic fur seal pups as males spend more time in riskier habitats than females. Only the “best” males get to reproduce, so they must take risks to gain strength and social skills in preparation for future fights over access to mates. In contrast, females need to prioritize survival and, hence, prefer safer habitats.

Resource partitioning can contribute to species coexistence by redudcing interspecific competition. To understand whether resource partitioning contributes towards sympatric populations of two otariids in Peru's dynamic Humboldt Current System (HCS), we compared seasonal diet composition of South American fur seals (SAFS, Actocephalus australis) and South American sea lions (SASL., Otaria byronia) over 15 seasons between 2015 and 2018 to determine whether there is a detectable mechanisms for resource partitioning at population level. The rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major concern for wildlife and ecosystem health globally. Genetic determinants of AMR have become indicators of anthropogenic pollution due to their greater association with humans and rarer presence in environments less affected by humans. The objective of this study was to determine the distribution and frequency of the class 1 integron, a genetic determinant of AMR, in both the faecal microbiome and in Escherichia coli isolated from neonates of three pinniped species. Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) and long-nosed fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) pups from eight breeding colonies along the Southern Australian coast were sampled between 2016-2019. DNA from faecal samples (n=309) and from E. coli (n=795) isolated from 884 faecal samples were analysed for class 1 integrons using PCRs targeting the conserved integrase gene (intI) and the gene cassette array. Class 1 integrons were detected in A. p. doriferus and N. cinerea pups sampled at seven of the eight breeding colonies investigated in 4.85% of faecal samples (n=15) and 4.52% of E. coli isolates (n=36). Integrons were not detected in any A. forsteri samples. DNA sequencing of the class 1 integron gene cassette array identified diverse genes conferring resistance to four antibiotic classes. The relationship between class 1 integron carriage and the concentration of five trace elements and heavy metals was also investigated, finding no significant association. The results of this study add to the growing evidence of the extent to which antimicrobial resistant bacteria are polluting the marine environment. As AMR determinants are frequently associated with bacterial pathogens, their occurrence suggests that these pinniped species are vulnerable to potential health risks. The implications for individual and population health as a consequence of AMR carriage is a critical component of ongoing health investigations.

We studied the diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur Seals Arctocephalus gazella (Peters, 1875) at two different localities of the South Shetland Islands: Stranger Point, King George Island/Isla 25 de Mayo and Duthoit Point, Nelson Island, by the analysis of 65 faecal samples collected in February 2012. Overall, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba (Dana, 1850) and fish were the main prey taxa followed by penguins and cephalopods. Myctophids were dominant among fish; Gymnoscopelus nicholsi (Gilbert, 1911) was the most important prey species at both sampling sites, followed by Electrona antarctica (Gunther, 1878) at Stranger Point and by the nototheniid Pleuragramma antarctica (Boulenger, 1902) at Duthoit Point. The relative similarity found in the dietary composition of fur seals from both locations suggest they might have been sharing common feeding areas. Our results were compared with those reported in the literature for different localities of the South Shetland Islands and the Scotia Sea region. The absence of formerly harvested demersal notothenioid species in the diet of fur seals may reflect the negative impact that commercial fisheries had on some fish populations and supports the importance of implementing long-term monitoring studies on the feeding habits of A. gazella in the area. RESUMEN Se estudió la dieta de ejemplares macho no reproductivos de lobo fino antártico, Arctocephalus gazella (Peters, 1875) en dos localidades de las Islas Shetland del Sur: Cabo Funes/Punta Stranger, Isla 25 de Mayo / Isla Rey Jorge y Punta Duthoit, Isla Nelson; por medio del análisis de 65 muestras de materia fecal colectadas en Febrero de 2012. En general, el krill antártico Euphausia superba (Dana, 1850) y los peces fueron los taxa presa más consumidos, seguidos por pingüinos y cefalópodos. Entre los peces, los mictófidos fueron dominantes; Gymnoscopelus nicholsi (Gilbert, 1911) fue la especie más importante en ambos apostaderos, seguido por Electrona antarctica (Gunther, 1878) en Punta Stranger y por el nototénido Pleuragramma antarctica (Boulenger, 1902) en Punta Duthoit. La similitud hallada en la composición dietaria de los agrupamientos de lobo estudiados sugiere áreas de alimentación en común. Nuestros resultados fueron comparados con aquellos reportados en la literatura para diferentes localidades de las Islas Shetland del Sur y la región del Mar de Scotia. La ausencia de especies de nototenoideos demersales históricamente diezmadas en la dieta del lobo fino podría estar reflejando el impacto negativo que las pesquerías comerciales han tenido sobre algunas poblaciones de peces y enfatizar la necesidad de realizar un monitoreo a largo plazo de los hábitos alimentarios de A. gazella en el archipiélago de las Islas Shetland del Sur.
