20. TVL1shape approximation from scattered 3D data

Abstract

With the emergence in 3D sensors such as laser scanners and 3D reconstruction from cameras, large 3D point clouds can now be sampled from physical objects within a scene. The raw 3D samples delivered by these sensors however, contain only a limited degree of information about the environment the objects exist in, which means that further geometrical high-level modelling is essential. In addition, issues like sparse data measurements, noise, missing samples due to occlusion, and the inherently huge datasets involved in such representations makes this task extremely challenging. This paper addresses these issues by presenting a new 3D shape modelling framework for samples acquired from 3D sensor. Motivated by the success of nonlinear kernel-based approximation techniques in the statistics domain, existing methods using radial basis functions are applied to 3D object shape approximation. The task is framed as an optimization problem and is extended using non-smooth L1 total variation regularization. Appropriate convex energy functionals are constructed and solved by applying the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers approach, which is then extended using Gauss-Seidel iterations. This significantly lowers the computational complexity involved in generating 3D shape from 3D samples, while both numerical and qualitative analysis confirms the superior shape modelling performance of this new framework compared with existing 3D shape reconstruction techniques.

21. Evolutionary distinctiveness and conservation priorities in a large radiation of songbirds.

Abstract

Human‐induced impacts such as climate change and habitat alterations, coupled with limits on funding, have forced conservation actions into a mode of triage. Although no current method has been agreed upon as the best approach to select species for conservation, many studies have demonstrated the utility of incorporating phylogenetic diversity into these decisions. In many cases, degree of phylogenetic relatedness is thought to provide a measure of functional diversity, and greater phylogenetic distinctiveness is likely linked to ecosystem stability. Despite recent debate over the validity of this notion, phylogenetic information remains an important factor to consider in evaluating species and regions for conservation attention. Emberizoidea is a large radiation of 830 species, representing roughly 17% of all songbirds and 8% of all birds. Species in this clade are found throughout the Americas and occur in all terrestrial biomes in the region. The large distribution of this clade, coupled with its morphological and ecological diversity, makes it an important radiation to study from an evolutionary and conservation perspective. This study provides conservation priorities for all species in Emberizoidea using evolutionary distinctiveness (ED) and Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) values from a pseudoposterior distribution of time‐calibrated supertrees. We found that threat level is not correlated with degree of ED, indicating that the most threatened species do not represent a disproportionate amount of ED. In addition, threatened species are slightly clustered across the phylogeny, indicating similar threats may be affecting groups of closely related species such as island radiations or geographically restricted radiations in highly disturbed regions. Abstract

The head bobber transgenic mouse line, produced by pronuclear integration, exhibits repetitive head tilting, circling behavior, and severe hearing loss. Transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait, the homozygote has vestibular and cochlea inner ear defects. The space between the semicircular canals is enclosed within the otic capsule creating a vacuous chamber with remnants of the semicircular canals, associated cristae, and vestibular organs. A poorly developed stria vascularis and endolymphatic duct is likely the cause for Reissner's membrane to collapse post-natally onto the organ of Corti in the cochlea. Molecular analyses identified a single integration of ~3 tandemly repeated copies of the transgene, a short duplicated segment of chromosome X and a 648 kb deletion of chromosome 7(F3). The three known genes (Gpr26, Cpxm2, and Chst15) in the deleted region are conserved in mammals and expressed in the wild-type inner ear during vestibular and cochlea development but are absent in homozygous mutant ears. We propose that genes critical for inner ear patterning and differentiation are lost at the head bobber locus and are candidate genes for human deafness and vestibular disorders.

Abstract

Coal feeding systems are discussed which are capable of feeding 20-100 T/H and the range of pressure is up to 100 bar. Most emphasis is placed on dry feeding systems. The systems outlined are subdivided into continuous and intermittent and the influence of each system on lock gas losses and reactor design is shown. Finally a cost estimate is presented which indicates the areas of preferred application and permits conclusions to be drawn regarding the economics of the various systems.
