Žymus XX a. mąstytojas, gydytojas, teologas, muzikas, visuomenės veikėjas, Nobelio taikos premijos laureatas Albertas Schweitzeris (1875–1965 ) buvo ir tebėra viena iš įstabiausių pasaulio asmenybių. Schweitzerio veiklos atgarsiai Lietuvą pasiekė palyginti neseniai, o stipresnį rezonansą, ypač medicininėje etikoje, įgauna tik dabar. Tačiau nemaža jo idėjų nebuvo visiška naujiena: jos kitonišku pavidalu sklido iš savojo šaltinio. Lietuviškaisis Schweitzerio analogas – bemaž tuo pat metu gyvenęs mūsų mąstytojas, kultūros ir visuomenės veikėjas Vydūnas. Būdami labai saviti, bet daug kuo analogiški, Schweitzerio ir Vydūno fenomenai dar nėra sulaukę lyginamosios analizės. Šis straipsnis – tai pirmasis bandymas. Schweitzeris ir Vydūnas – savo epochos pagimdyti fenomenai, bandę panašiai spręsti aktualias jos problemas. Tiek vieną, tiek kitą jaudino disproporcija tarp civilizacijos tempų ir dvasinės raidos pokyčių. Šiuos mąstytojus vienija apsisprendimas tiesiogiai tarnauti žmonėms. Jie ėjo tais pačiais ieškojimų keliais, gilinosi į pasaulio religijas kaip į kultūrų fundamentus bei įvairias žmoniškumo santykio su būtimi formas, rėmėsi Rytų ir Vakarų dvasinių patirčių analize, mėgindami suartinti šias patirtis. Schweitzeris ir Vydūnas filosofiją laikė pasaulėžiūra, padedančia praktiškai pertvarkyti pasaulį. Abudu humanistai panašiai suvokė dvasinį būties pagrindą. Juodu teigė pasaulio vertingumą ir pabrėžė moralios kultūros svarbą, derino dvasingumą su doroviniu veikimu. Abiejų mąstytojų mokymo alfa ir omega – ypatinga pagarba gyvybei. Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) and Vydūnas (1868-1953) can be said to represent an anologous phenomenon in that they put much effort in looking for the solutions of the most acute problems of the time. Their main concern was a strive for balancing the main challenge of the beginning of the XXth century which can be identified as a disproportion between the tempo of the civilizational and spiritual development on the one hand, and its results on the other. Their lives strongly support their intellectual principles. Both of them were united in determination to serve the people. There are parallels in their interests as well. Their investigations were centred around world religions as a fundamental form of human and cultural relations and the analysis of Eastern and Western spiritual experience with the aim of its depolarization. Schweitzer and Vydūnas were kindred in their understanding of the vocation of philosophy - they deemed it to be a way of approaching the world in order to solve its practical problems. They were akin in the interpretation of Being's spiritual background. As humanists, both thinkers emphasized the importance of moral culture and were searching for the harmony of spiritual and practical moral actions. Morality was the highest spiritual form for them. In sum, the alpha and omega for both philosophers was a deep respect towards life.
