En este trabajo se presentará la economía circular como alternativa a la economía lineal y el papel que puede desempeñar el consumidor. Además, se realizará una encuesta entre jóvenes para valorar su conocimiento sobre la economía circular y, a raíz de los resultados, se plantearán propuestas para favorecer su implicación en la misma. This paper presents an evaluation protocol that transforms a collection of rankings, defined over a set of alternatives, into a complete, transitive, and cardinal assessment. It combines the ideas of Borda and Condorcet by computing the support that each alternative receives on average when confronted with any other. The protocol evaluates those alternatives in terms of pairwise comparisons but weighs the outcomes differently depending on how each alternative fares with respect to the others. The evaluation appears as the stable distribution of an iterative process in which each alternative competes randomly with any other, and results in a vector of positive numbers that tells us the relative support of the different options. We show that this protocol does not require linear orderings and can also be applied in the presence of incomplete rankings and when dealing with several issues simultaneously. We report on two novel choice experiments with real goods where subjects in one treatment are forced to choose, as is the norm in economic experiments, while in the other they are not but can instead incur a small cost to defer choice. Using a variety of measures, we find that the active choices (i.e., those that exclude the deferral outside option) of subjects in the nonforced‐choice treatment are generally more consistent. We also find that the combined deferral and active‐choice behavior of subjects in that treatment is explained better by a model of dominant choice with incomplete preferences than it is by rational choice. Our results suggest that nonforced‐choice experiments and models can be helpful in separating people's rational, hesitant/not‐yet‐rational and genuinely irrational behavior, and can potentially offer important new insights in revealed preference analysis. We examine the relationship between immigration and preferences for redistribution in Europe using a newly assembled dataset of immigrant stocks for 140 regions in 16 Western European countries. Exploiting within-country variations in the share of immigrants at the regional level, we find that native respondents display lower support for redistribution when the share of immigrants in their residence region is higher. This negative association is driven by regions of countries with relatively large welfare states and by respondents at the center or at the right of the political spectrum. It is stronger when immigrants originate from Middle-Eastern or Eastern European countries, are less skilled than natives and experience more residential segregation. These results are unlikely to be driven by immigrants’ endogenous location choices, that is, by welfare magnet effects or by immigrants’ sorting into regions with better economic opportunities. They are also robust to instrumenting immigration using a standard shift-share approach. According to conventional wisdom, multinational enterprises (MNEs) undertake vertical FDI to take advantage of cross‐border factor cost differences and source inputs from abroad at better terms. However, recent empirical studies document many instances in which intrafirm trade between parent firms and their vertically related foreign affiliates is absent. We provide theoretical support for these findings, demonstrating that a firm can engage in vertical FDI to exploit its intangible assets in another country and improve its input sourcing terms domestically by enhancing its cross‐threat. Furthermore, we show that the welfare implications of vertical FDI on the home and host country are neither always positive nor aligned. The linear ordering problem is among core problems in combinatorial optimization. There is a squared non-negative matrix and the goal is to find the permutation of rows and columns which maximizes the sum of superdiagonal values. In this paper, we consider that columns of the matrix belong to different clusters and that the goal is to order the clusters. We introduce a new approach for the case when exactly one representative is chosen from each cluster. The new problem is called the linear ordering problem with clusters and consists of both choosing a representative for each cluster and a permutation of these representatives, so that the sum of superdiagonal values of the sub-matrix induced by the representatives is maximized. A combinatorial linear model for the linear ordering problem with clusters is given, and eventually, a hybrid metaheuristic is carefully designed and developed. Our study estimates the effects of exposure to a family planning program which promoted surgical contraception for the first time in Peru on women's use of birth control methods and their children's health. While a broad program, the Programa de Salud Reproductiva y Planificación Familiar forced many indigenous women to undergo sterilization. We compare provinces affected by the program earlier with provinces affected later, before and after the policy. Overall, the results indicate that women in treated areas were more likely to use both temporary and permanent contraceptive methods and their children were less likely to die within their first year of life, partly due to longer breastfeeding. However, we observe heterogeneity by ethnicity. In treated provinces, nonindigenous children benefited from the policy regardless of their mothers’ choice of contraceptive method, while there were few positive impacts for indigenous children whose mothers underwent sterilization. This suggests that coercive or aggressively implemented family planning programs may not confer health benefits on children. Engagement in risky behaviors is traditionally more prevalent among males than females, and the gap increases as youths move from adolescence to adulthood. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we identify a causal effect of exposure to high-school grade-mates with mothers who think that important skills for both boys and girls to possess are traditionally masculine ones (such as to think for oneself or work hard) as opposed to traditionally feminine ones (namely, to be well-behaved, popular, or help others) on the gender gap in teenagers’ engagement in risky behaviors. We find that a higher proportion of grade-mates’ mothers with non-traditional or non-stereotypical gender views who believe that independent thinking and working hard matter for either gender is associated with a reduction of the gender gap in risky behaviors both in the short and medium run. These results are driven by males curbing risky behaviors, suggesting that the relaxation of gender stereotypes results in boys behaving “more like girls”. In the long run, being exposed to grade-mates whose mothers have non-stereotypical gender beliefs reduces the gender gap in labor market outcomes by improving women's performance. This evidence, together with our exploration of several potential mechanisms, suggests that the transmission of gender norms is driving our results. This thesis includes four essays on risk assessment with financial econometrics models. The first chapter provides Monte Carlo evidence on the efficiency gains obtained in GARCH-base estimations of VaR and ES by incorporating dependence information through copulas and subsequently using full maximum likelihood (FML) estimates. First, individual returns series are considered; in this case, the efficiency gain stems from exploiting the relationship with another returns series using a copula model. Second, portfolio returns series obtained as a linear combination of returns series related with a copula model, are considered; in this case, the efficiency gain stems from using FML estimates instead of two-stage maximum likelihood estimates. Our results show that, in these situations, using copula models and FML leads to a substantial reduction in the mean squared error of the VaR and ES estimates (around 50\% when there is a medium degree of dependence between returns) and a notable improvement in the performance of backtesting procedures. Then, chapter 2 analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the conditional variance of stock returns. In this work, we look at this effect from a global perspective, employing series of major stock market and sector indices. We use the Hansen’s Skewed-t distribution with EGARCH extended to control for sudden changes in volatility. We oversee the COVID-19 effect on the VaR. Our results show that there is a significant sudden shift up in the return distribution variance post the announcement of the pandemic, which must be explained properly to obtain reliable measures for financial risk management. In chapter 3, we assess VaR and ES estimates assuming different models for standardised returns such as Cornish-Fisher and Gram-Charlier polynomial expansions, and well-known parametric densities such as normal, skewed Student-t family of Zhu and Galbraith (2010), and Johnson. This paper aims to check whether models based on polynomial expansions outperform the parametric ones. We carry out the model performance comparison in two stages. First, a backtesting analysis for VaR and ES, and second, using the loss function approach. Our backtesting results in our empirical exercise suggest that all distributions, but the normal, perform quite well in VaR and ES estimations. Regarding the loss function analysis, we conclude that the Cornish-Fisher expansion usually outperforms the others in VaR estimation, but Johnson distribution is the one that provides the best ES estimates in most cases. Although the differences among all distributions (excluding the normal) are not great. Finally, chapter 4 assess whether accounting for asymmetry and tail-dependence in returns distributions may help to identify more profitable investment strategies in asset portfolios. Three copula models are used to parameterize the multivariate distribution of returns: Gaussian, C-Vine and R-Vine copulas. Using data from equities and ETFs from the US market, we find evidence that, for portfolios of 48 constituents or less, the R-Vine copula is able to produce more profitable portfolios with respect to both, the C-Vine and Gaussian copulas. However, for portfolios of 100 assets, performance of R- and C-Vine copulas is quite similar, being both better than the Gaussian copula.

Ante el auge experimentado por la utilización de criptomonedas, este trabajo fin de grado realiza una descripción del concepto y revisión de las principales criptomonedas existentes. Se analizan sus funciones y su evolución en los mercados. La historia del dinero oficial permite deducir si existe relación entre las propiedades del dinero para ser considerado como tal y las propiedades de las criptomonedas. Ello conduce a reconsiderar el papel de los bancos centrales y la política monetaria. También se revisa cómo las criptomonedas se pueden considerar en las teorías económicas estudiadas en la asignatura de macroeconomía. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the contribution of land capital to the growth of emissions and income per capita in the long run. We collect new satellite data from the Earth Observatory to obtain estimates of the Enhanced Vegetation Index at the country level for the period 2000-2015. We use these data and the World Bank wealth estimates of natural capital to calibrate and empirically test an extension of the Green Solow model with land degradation and land capital investment. We show that the model is consistent with the cross-country variation in growth rates of carbon emissions per capita and find that there is convergence at the global level, with the contribution of land capital investment to the growth of emissions being negative and significant in all specifications. La crisis de 2008 sigue afectando doce años más tarde de forma directa al sistema financiero, la necesidad de estímulos desde entonces ha sido constante por lo que los bancos centrales han optado por políticas monetarias más allá del control de los tipos de interés, conocidas como “Políticas no convencionales”. Es por ello que se tratará de explicar las diversas políticas monetarias que se han aplicado a lo largo de estos años así como exponer los posibles riesgos que estas tienen. Durante el desarrollo del trabajo se tratarán por tanto los tipos de interés negativos, la trampa de liquidez y la consecuente expansión cuantitativa, tomando un especial enfoque en la cantidad de dinero impreso por los bancos centrales y concluyendo en la teoría del Dinero de Helicóptero planteada por el economista Milton Friedman (1969), que será relacionada con los recientes cheques de estímulos de Estados Unidos a raíz de la crisis del COVID-19. Se analizará cómo esta teoría podría estar influyendo en el consumo, la inflación, la recuperación económica y los mercados financieros.

We consider a symmetric homogeneous Cournot duopoly operating under increasing marginal costs. One of the firms owns a patented superior technology that reduces the intercept of the marginal cost function. We compare the incentives of the insider patentee to license the technology to the rival firm either through a fixed fee or through a royalty. We obtain that royalty licensing does not necessarily dominates in our setting: when decreasing returns are important, a royalty is superior only for small enough innovations, whereas a fixed fee is chosen for large innovations. Aditionally, we show that our model is able to replicate the results in Wang (2002), which analyzes the same question in a differentiated duopoly with constant marginal costs. [Esp]El trabajo fin de master presentado está destinado al análisis del turismo internacional, esto es las llegadas de no residentes a Ucrania, para identificar identificar en primer lugar sus principales características y analizar su relevancia e importancia en la economía ucraniana. Adicionalmente, se analizan los impactos recibidos por este sector de actividad, que como es sabido, es muy sensible a conflictos sociales, bélicos o de cualquier otra índole que puedan afectar a la seguridad del turista. Este análisis nos permitirá concluir la sensibilidad del turismo internacional llegando a Ucrania y establecer posibles escenarios sobre el desarrollo futuro del turismo en Ucrania como consecuencia de la guerra del año 2022. En consecuencia y en primer lugar, este Trabajo Fin de Master analiza las principales características del turismo ucraniano. En segundo lugar, el ensayo analiza la relevancia e importancia de la industria turística en la economía ucraniana. Finalmente, analiza el impacto en la industria turística de Ucrania de la crisis económica, social y sanitaria que han tenido lugar en el siglo XXI.[Eng]The presented study is dedicated to the analysis of the international tourism activity in Ukraine in order to identify the main characteristics and their economic relevance in the Ukrainian economy. Additionally, the factors that affect tourism industry are also analyzed. This last research lets us to establish assumptions about the tourism development in Ukraine after the current war of the 2022 year. First of all, the research analyses the main characteristics of the Ukrainian tourism. Secondly, the essay analyses the relevance of the tourism industry in the Ukrainian economy. Este trabajo realiza un análisis macroeconómico de las causas del mal funcionamiento de los últimos años del sistema Bretton Woods, seguido de la explicación de la transición del Sistema Monetario Internacional hacia los tipos de cambio flotante, incluyendo también la corriente de teoría económica que surgió de aquellas décadas inestables. La convertibilidad del dólar en oro, establecida después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, dejó en manos de Estados Unidos el SMI. La emisión de dólares de forma masiva provocó el problema de inconvertibilidad desembocando en el fin del sistema. La década de los 70 siguió empeorando el panorama económico mundial por las crisis petroleras y las de deuda. Durante esta década de cambios, en la mayoría de países avanzados se dejó fluctuar el tipo de cambio y, en Europa, se intentaba mantener un equilibrio monetario entre las diferentes monedas nacionales para una posterior unión monetaria y económica.

La economía del comportamiento (que aúna economía y psicología) ofrece claves para entender las decisiones tomadas por dirigentes políticos y por la ciudadanía durante la pandemia de COVID-19 a través de los llamados sesgos cognitivos. Estos sesgos pueden ser contrarrestados mediante intervenciones conductuales, denominadas nudges, para promocionar conductas responsables en la «nueva normalidad». Además de repasar, desde la óptica de la economía del comportamiento, el pasado, el presente y el futuro de los elementos conductuales que rodean a la pandemia y su gestión, este artículo propone la formalización jurídica de los nudges, para lo cual deben cumplirse tres estándares mínimos: la exigencia de transparencia, la proscripción de la arbitrariedad y la puesta en valor de su eficiencia. Sugerimos, de igual forma, diseñar protocolos para futuras pandemias, de suerte que los nudges y las medidas legislativas duras puedan complementarse de una manera armónica y escalonada. Los nudges se prestan a una implementación rápida y poco coercitiva, por lo que resultan especialmente apropiados en orden al encauzamiento de las conductas más leves, pudiendo así reservarse otras medidas, como las sanciones, para las situaciones más graves. Behavioural economics (a combination of economics and psychology) provides keys to understand decisions made by politicians and citizens along the COVID-19 pandemic through the so-called cognitive biases. These biases can be offset by implementing behavioural interventions named “nudges” in order to promote responsible behaviours in the “new normality”. This paper analyses, from a behavioural economics perspective, past, present and future of behavioural aspects surrounding the pandemic. Besides, this paper proposes different ways to formalize nudges according to law, which needs the fulfilment of three minimum requirements, namely: transparency, non-arbitrariness and efficiency. Furthermore, it is also suggested that protocols and contingency plans are set up to face future pandemics, in which both soft (nudge-type) interventions and hard legal regulations play different roles but complementary ones. Nudges can be implemented in a fast and less coercive way, so they are particularly suitable for changing mild misbehaviour, reserving legal sanctions for the more serious ones. D. Esta tesis esta compuesta por tres capítulos. Los dos primeros capítulos estudian los efectos macroeconómicos de una consolidación fiscal y estímulos fiscales cuando la deuda privada es elevada. El tercer capítulo, estudia proyecciones de deuda púbica para el caso español bajo diferentes escenarios macroeconómicos. En el primer capítulo se analiza los efectos macroeconómicos de diferentes planes de consolidación fiscal en los que el gobierno reduce de forma gradual la ratio deuda pública-PIB y el sector privado está altamente endeudado. Lo resultados muestran que en el largo plazo, la consolidación fiscal genera beneficios en términos de output que son mayores en el caso en el que el sector público este altamente endeudado. En el corto plazo, la efectividad de la política fiscal en un escenario de deuda alta, depende del instrumento fiscal utilizado. Finalmente se analiza el bienestar social, encontrando que la política de consolidación fiscal produce una ganancia en términos de bienestar cuando el gasto público o el impuesto al consumo se utilizan como instrumento y este bienestar es mayor en el caso de endeudamiento privado alto. Sin embargo, cuando el instrumento fiscal son los impuestos al trabajo o al capital, se produce una pérdida de bienestar que es amplificada en un escenario de endeudamiento alto. En el segundo capítulo, se estudia como el tamaño de los multiplicadores fiscales depende del nivel de endeudamiento privado. Este artículo contribuye al debate de los efectos de los estímulos fiscales demostrando que el impacto de las políticas fiscales depende del nivel de endeudamiento, considerando el endeudamiento de los hogares y empresas. Finalmente, en el tercer capítulo se examina las proyecciones de deuda para la economía española bajo diferentes escenarios macroeconómicos. Se encuentra que la deuda aumentará hasta un 174% en 2035 si se cumple el escenario macroeconómico que predice la Comisión Europea. En el caso de considerar una subida de impuestos, la deuda disminuye pero lejos de llegar a los niveles pre-COVID.

En este trabajo se presentará un análisis crítico comparativo del bienestar en las distintas comunidades autónomas de España desde dos perspectivas diferentes: (i) tradicional, basada en el PIB y (ii) alternativa, a partir de un conjunto de variables que se determinarán en base a la literatura económica reciente. Finalizada la II Guerra Mundial, el nuevo orden económico internacional acordado en la conferencia de Bretton Woods con el apoyo de Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos impulsó un crecimiento económico mundial sin precedentes que se quiebra con la crisis del petróleo de 1973. Durante esta etapa, considerada la edad de oro del capitalismo, los menos industrializados, que vieron como un ejemplo a seguir el modelo de cooperación y ayuda que supuso el Plan Marshall, hicieron grandes intentos para desarrollar acuerdos de integración regional, especialmente en Latinoamérica. A partir de 1973, como consecuencia de la crisis económica provocada por el brusco encarecimiento de los precios del petróleo, nace un nuevo modelo que deja de lado las políticas intervencionistas y regulatorias y donde predomina el libre mercado, el librecambio y las privatizaciones, acordadas en lo que se conoce como el Consenso de Washington, dando pie a un nuevo ciclo de crecimiento que es aprovechado por los países emergentes para lograr la convergencia con los más desarrollados. En la última Ronda del GATT (Ronda de Uruguay) celebrada entre los años 1986 y 1994 se acordó la creación de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC), con un estatus similar al Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) o al Banco Mundial (BM), así como nuevas reducciones de aranceles, compromisos para negociar la liberalización del mercado de productos agrícolas y textiles y para la defensa de los derechos de propiedad intelectual, y acuerdos para la liberalización del comercio de servicios. Es en este contexto de la liberalización comercial multilateral llevado a cabo en el seno de la OMC donde se produce una expansión de Acuerdos Comerciales Regionales (ACR), principalmente en una gran mayoría de países de Latinoamérica, África y Asia, así como avances en la integración económica de algunas áreas regionales, como la Unión Europea (UE). Los impactos que para el comercio global tienen los acuerdos de integración comercial, tanto los firmados en la década de los noventa como los de última generación, y más concretamente aquellos en los que intervienen países industrializados, unido a la preocupación que suscita en gran parte de la población occidental el hecho de que los beneficios de las políticas comerciales liberalizadoras no se hayan compartido ampliamente dando pie a argumentos para el proteccionismo y un mayor nacionalismo económico hacen relevante abrir una investigación que proporcione una comprensión más profunda sobre sus efectos en el bienestar económico de países avanzados como EE. UU y España analizando 1) grado de intensidad en que dichos acuerdos han logrado aumentos en el volumen exportador e importador de bienes al reducirse o eliminarse aranceles y otras restricciones; y 2) en qué medida existen perjuicios en forma de desviación de comercio para aquellos otros países socios no-miembros. La investigación se apoya en la teoría de las uniones aduaneras, cuyos principios surgen mayormente de los trabajos de Viner (1950), quien mostró que las preferencias comerciales podían mejorar o empeorar la asignación de recursos, produciendo unas ganancias debido a la creación de comercio o unas pérdidas debido a la desviación de comercio. La posibilidad de que en un futuro exista un ACR entre EE. UU y la UE tendría efectos para las economías tanto de EE. UU como de España, por lo que adquirir mayor comprensión de cómo les afecta en términos de creación y desviación de comercio los ACR que mantienen en vigor justifica un estudio de estas características, considerando, además, que los intereses de EE. UU y la UE en materia de comercio internacional no siempre son coincidentes. Además de una introducción general y las conclusiones, esta tesis consta de tres capítulos o trabajos independientes que mantienen un nexo en común, un análisis de los efectos sobre el comercio exterior de Estados Unidos y de España a través de los Acuerdos Comerciales Regionales suscritos con terceros países. En el capítulo 2 se señalan los principales fundamentos en los que se basa la teoría de la integración económica, una revisión de la literatura más reciente y relevante y la metodología y datos empleados. El capítulo 3 se inicia con un análisis sobre los flujos comerciales de Estados Unidos para a continuación describir los acuerdos de integración comercial suscritos, así como sus características más comunes, con un análisis algo más exhaustivo sobre el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN) y su impacto en las economías de los tres países miembros. Posteriormente, y aplicando un modelo de gravedad estructural, se cuantifican los impactos que para el comercio bilateral tienen los diferentes ACR que mantiene en vigor. Los resultados del modelo muestran una alta heterogeneidad según tipo de acuerdo. En el capítulo 4 se describe, en primer término, la estructura productiva y comercial de España así como un análisis sobre sus flujos comerciales, con especial interés en los índices de complementariedad comercial y su orientación regional. Dos análisis posteriores evalúan los impactos que en el volumen exportador español han tenido los ACR firmados por la Unión Europea en los últimos años. Los coeficientes referidos al impacto de los ACR son altamente significativos y positivos, con aumentos del 33 por ciento en las exportaciones y el 41 por ciento en las importaciones si se exceptúan los intercambios producidos en el seno de la UE. Por sectores, el impacto es notablemente positivo en bienes primarios, otros productos de baja tecnología como la cerámica, el juguete o el mueble, la industria automotriz y en los de alta tecnología electrónicos.

This thesis is a collection of three essays that examine the macroeconomic impact of natural resource windfalls and the microeconomic impact of Chinese development finance. The aim is to understand how fiscal windfalls largely driven by events in the world affect economic development. The first chapter studies the impact of commodity related income gains on the number of exporters and the average export value per exporter within the manufacturing sector. A large body of theoretical and empirical literature showed that these windfalls could be detrimental to the manufacturing sector, but none untangled the margins through which the exports from the manufacturing sector adjusts to these windfalls. I exploit the exogenous variation in the windfalls generated by the increase in prices of all major commodities during the early 2000s to fill this gap in the literature. First, I find that manufacturing industries that historically had a relatively higher share of exports to value added ratio (more exportable) tend to be negatively affected relative to the other manufacturing industries at both margins. Secondly, the extensive margin is largely driven by entrants. i.e., the number of new exporting firms that enter more exportable industries decline relative to the less exportable industries. Thirdly, for the more exportable industries, the average export value per incumbent exporters industries decline while that of the new exporters increases relative to the less exportable industries. It has often been argued that countries that produce natural resources mobilize less non-resource tax revenues than other countries. In the second chapter, I exploit the arguably exogenous variation in the timing of giant oilfield discoveries to examine the impact of natural resource abundance on non-resource tax revenue. The timing of giant oilfield discoveries is arguably exogenous and thus renders them appealing to empirically examine this argument. This allows me to examine the performance of non-resource tax revenue effort before and immediately after discovery as well as the period corresponding to the inflow of revenues from the production. I find that non-resource tax revenues tend to increase in the period following the discovery before the onset of production and after production commences. This effect is due to an increase in non-resource indirect tax revenues. Further analysis shows that both the total and indirect non-resource tax revenues, experience an increase in only low- middle income countries. This effect is largely driven by an increase in the consumption of goods and services. Improvement in agricultural productivity plays a key role in the process of economic development. Investment in critical infrastructure has been documented in the literature as one of the pathways to boost agricultural productivity. In the third chapter, I study the causal impact of Chinese development finance on agricultural productivity in Tanzania, at the sub-national level. I combine household panel data with rich farm level information with geocoded Chinese development projects. I then exploit the within village level variation in the total number of Chinese financed development projects in a panel fixed effects model to examine their effects on agricultural productivity. I find a positive effect on agricultural productivity in villages that are located within 25 km of these projects. This is largely driven by economic infrastructure. The results are robust to alternative definitions of Chinese financed development projects. I also find that the potential mechanisms driving the results are agricultural commercialization and access to improved seeds. This suggests that these projects connect farmers to input and output markets.

In this note we revisit the paper by Fonseca et al. (Series 11: 83-103, 2020) who find that education has a positive effect on health. They use several compulsory schooling reforms as instruments for education. Our objective is to replicate this causal finding, so we start by thoroughly discussing their identification strategy. In particular, we emphasize the importance of carefully defining birth cohort groups and using country-specific time trends. Once we take these issues into account, we show that the instrument they use is too weak.

We study a standard duopoly model of simultaneous divisionalization and Cournot competition, assuming that firms have different marginal costs and divisions are costless. We obtain that in equilibrium only the divisions of the efficient firm are active because price is equal to the marginal cost of the inefficient firm. In the sequential case, however, this “entry-deterrence” strategy is only profitable for the efficient firm when its cost advantage is important enough. So in our setting, both firms coexist in equilibrium only when the cost difference is small enough and divisions are chosen sequentially. In order to support economic development across all European Union regions, €351.8 billion –almost a third of the total EU budget– has been set aside for the Cohesion Policy during the 2014–2020 period. The distribution of this budget is made through five main structural and investment funds, after long and difficult negotiations among the EU member states. This paper analyzes the problem of allocating the limited resources of the European Regional Development Fund as a conflicting claims problem. Specifically, we attempt to show how the conflicting claims approach fits this actual problem, and we propose alternative ways of distributing the budget via (i) claims solutions or (ii) the imposition of bounds (guarantees) to each of the regions. By applying this approach we also show that there is a claims solution that performs better than the others by reducing inequality and promoting convergence to a greater degree. It is clear that political bargaining will always be part of the allocation process. However, having an intuitive initial proposal may help politicians to find the best agreement. To that effect, we propose the use of a claims solution as a way to find an initial proposal for future policy changes concerning the allocations of the EU structural funds. We consider a cooperative game defined by an economic lot-sizing problem with heterogeneous costs over a finite time horizon, in which each firm faces demand for a single product in each period and coalitions can pool orders. The model of cooperation works as follows: ordering channels and holding and backlogging technologies are shared among the members of the coalitions. This implies that each firm uses the best ordering channel and holding technology provided by the participants in the consortium. That is, they produce, hold inventory, pay backlogged demand and make orders at the minimum cost of the coalition members. Thus, firms aim at satisfying their demand over the planing horizon with minimal operation cost. Our contribution is to show that there exist fair allocations of the overall operation cost among the firms so that no group of agents profit from leaving the consortium. Then we propose a parametric family of cost allocations and provide sufficient conditions for this to be a stable family against coalitional defections of firms. Finally, we focus on those periods of the time horizon that are consolidated and we analyze their effect on the stability of cost allocations. We measure the marginal effects of two crucial dimensions of the Investment Game design of Gneezy and Potters (1997, GP97) and its replications: time frequency and time horizon. To this aim, we randomize between subjects five different time frequencies: 1 round (“High Frequency” in GP97), 3 rounds (“Low Frequency”), but also 6, 9 and 12 rounds. As for time horizon, we compare the baseline GP97 horizon (9 rounds) with smaller (3 and 6 rounds), but also higher (12 rounds) alternatives. We find that, holding the time horizon constant, subjects invest more when they evaluate their investments less frequently, but this result is significant only when time horizon is sufficiently long. We also find that lower frequencies increase the marginal investment at a decreasing rate. As for time horizon, we find that, holding time frequency constant, the higher the horizon, the lower the investment (although, as in the previous case, investment lowers at a decreasing rate). Our reduced form results also show that subjects’ behavior is sensitive to the endowment stock provided along the experiment, independently of time frequency. Evidence from empirical literature highlights income, education and pre-marriage assets as major factors in determining intrahousehold bargaining power of women. In this paper, I examine another possible determinant of female bargaining power: type of marriage. More specifically, I evaluate the impact of an Islamic law reform in northern Nigeria on polygamy while also exploiting differences in exposure to the reform by state of residence, age and year of marriage as a source of exogenous variation in polygamy to estimate its direct causal effect on female intrahousehold bargaining power. The results suggest that, compared to similar women not exposed to the reform, those in the affected group are 0.149 percentage points less likely to be polygamous. Further, on the average, not being polygamous increases female bargaining power by 0.335 percentage points.

This work proposes a multimodal approach with which to predict the regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by combining historical GDP values with the embodied information in Twitter messages concerning the current economic condition. This proposal is of great interest, since it delivers forecasts at higher frequencies than both the official statistics (published only annually at the regional level in Spain) and the existing unofficial quarterly predictions (which rely on economic indicators that are available only after months of delay). The proposed method is based on a two-stage architecture. In the first stage, a multi-task autoencoder is initially used to obtain a GDP-related representation of tweets, which are then filtered to remove outliers and to obtain the GDP prediction from the consensus of opinions. In a second stage, this result is combined with the historical GDP values of the region using a multimodal network. The method is evaluated in four different regions of Spain using the tweets written by the most relevant economists, politicians, newspapers and institutions in each one. The results show that our approach successfully learns the evolution of the GDP using only historical information and tweets, thus making it possible to provide earlier forecasts about the regional GDP. This method also makes it possible to establish which the most or least influential opinions regarding this prediction are. As an additional exercise, we have assessed how well our method predicted the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. We study the link between residential segregation and fertility for the socially excluded and marginalized Roma ethnic minority. Using original survey data we collected in Serbia, we investigate whether fertility differs between ethnically homogeneous and mixed neighborhoods. Our results show that Roma in less-segregated areas tend to have significantly fewer children (around 0.8). Most of the difference arises from Roma in less-segregated areas waiting substantially more after having a boy than their counterparts in more-segregated areas. We exploit variation in the share of Serbian sounding first names to provide evidence that a mechanism at play is a shift in preferences toward lower fertility and sons rather than daughters induced by a higher exposure to the Serbian majority culture. In this paper, we first characterize the class of contest success functions (CSFs) that yield contests with equilibria in dominant strategies. Then we study the optimal contest as a decision problem under uncertainty. We consider the classical criteria of Wald, Laplace, Hurwicz and Savage. We find that the CSF that maximizes aggregate effort under these criteria has the form of an additively separable cutoff CSF. The objective of this research is to build models for various time resolutions to predict global solar irradiation using data mining and statistical techniques. The time resolutions analyzed are 5 min, 1 hour and one-day horizon ahead. The models tested herein are three supervised machine learning (ML) techniques: nonlinear autoregressive neural network (NAR), support vector regression (SVR) and random forest (RF). A linear autoregressive (AR) model and the naive persistence (PER) model have also been included. The datasets come from two sites situated in Algeria: Algiers and Ghardaia that have different climatic conditions during the year corresponding to two types of climate, Mediterranean and Arid. One important contribution of this research to global irradiance forecasting is the benchmarking of the ML used, taking into account the lack of practical results and the needs detected in the literature, especially for the case of RF model; according to our best knowledge, the random forest method has never been tested as it has been done in our study: it is just based on past values of the same variable without exogenous data to forecast the future ones. The results of this research show that RF is the best technique with a slight difference in performance, specially for hourly forecasts ahead. The proposed models appear to be less outstanding both in the case of unstable sky conditions (Algiers) and when the resolution is 1 day, due to the fact that time series become significantly less correlated by including more randomness characteristic.

Using a unique dataset from Italy, we show that the local unemployment rate at entry has a persistent positive effect on severe and non‐severe workplace injuries of young workers. Entrants during recessions, despite receiving marginally higher entry wages, also experience slower wage growth. The observed pattern in the differences between severe and non‐severe injuries indicates that entrants during recessions might under‐report non‐severe workplace injuries. Our findings suggest that workers entering during recessions are persistently locked into low‐quality jobs and that the mix of hazardous tasks endogenously adjusts to the business cycle. This paper provides evidence of different teenage-smoking dynamics between genders with social progression. In particular, we find that descending from more gender-equal societies makes girls relatively more prone to smoke than those from less gender-equal societies relative to their male counterparts. Using data from over 6,000 second-generation immigrant teenagers sharing culture and institutions from one host country (Spain) but coming from 45 different countries of ancestry, we find that the higher the degree of gender equality in the country of ancestry, the higher the likelihood that girls smoke relative to boys. Our result holds even after we control for parental, sibling, and peer smoking, as well as for country-of-ancestry indicators of economic development and the smoking gender gap, among others. Production-Inventory settings with heterogeneous agents appear frequently in the study of supply chain management. For instance, there are Production-Inventory situations in which certain agents are essential as they can reduce the costs of other agents (followers) when they cooperate with each other. The study of such a cooperation can be modelled by means of a cooperative game and studied finding fair cost allocations. These class of cooperative games was introduced in Guardiola et al. (in Games Econ Behav 65:205–219, 2009) where it was also proposed the Owen point. This cost allocation is an appealing solution concept that for Production-Inventory games (PI-games) is always stable, in the sense of the core. The Owen point allows all the players in the game to operate at minimum cost but it does not take into account the cost reduction induced by essential players over their followers. Thus, it may be seen as an altruistic allocation for essential players what can be criticized. The aim of this paper is two-fold: to introduce new core allocations for PI-games improving the weaknesses of the Owen point and to study the structure and complexity of set of stable cost allocations (the core) of PI-games. This paper analyzes cost sharing in uncapacitated lot-sizing models with backlogging and heterogeneous costs. It is assumed that several firms participate in a consortium aiming at satisfying their demand over the planning horizon with minimal operating cost. Each individual firm has its own ordering channel and holding technology, but cooperation with other firms consists in sharing that information. Therefore, the firms that cooperate can use the best ordering channels and holding technology among members of the consortium. This mode of cooperation is stable. in that allocations of the overall operating cost exist, so that no group of agents benefit from leaving the consortium. Our contribution in the current paper is to present a new family of cost sharing allocations with good properties for enforcing cooperation: the unitary Owen points. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the unitary Owen points to belong to the core of the cooperative game. In addition, we provide empirical evidence, through simulation, showing that, in randomly-generated situations, the above condition is fulfilled in 99% of the cases. Additionally, a relationship between lot-sizing games and a certain family of production-inventory games, through Owen’s points of the latter, is described. This interesting relationship enables easily constructing a variety of coalitionally stable allocations for cooperative lot-sizing models. Can oil discovery shocks affect the demand for protectionism? An intertemporal model of Dutch disease indicates that if the tradable sector is politically dominant then an oil discovery can induce protectionism. If the economy is also credit constrained, this effect is intensified upon discovery, but partially reversed when oil revenues start to flow. We test these predictions using 16.2 million, HS-6 level, bilateral tariff rates that cover 5718 products in 155 countries over the period 1988–2012, and data on worldwide discoveries of giant oil and gas fields. Our identification strategy rests on the exogeneity of the timing of discoveries. Our empirical results indicate that an oil discovery increases tariffs during pre-production years and decreases tariffs in the years to follow yet to a lesser extent, most notably in capital scarce economies with a relatively dominant tradable sector. Our baseline estimates indicate that a giant oil field discovery induces a rise of approximately 13% in the average tariff over the course of 10 years; this increase is approximately 2.5 times larger during the pre-production period when the oil discovery represents a pure news shock. Why people participate in public good provision is one of the oldest questions in Economics. In the absence of enforcement mechanisms public goods would be under-provided. I develop a dynamic model of forward-looking agents in the presence of social pressure, which provides a potential enforcement mechanism. I show that social pressure is effective in generating provision in a public good game: after an agent starts contributing to the public good, other agents decide to contribute as well because of fear of being punished, what generates contagion in the network. In contrast to the previous literature, contagion happens fast, as part of the best response of fully rational individuals. The network topology has implications for whether the contagion starts and the extent to which it spreads. I find conditions under which an agent decides to be the first to contribute in order to generate contagion in the network, as well as conditions for contribution due to a self-fulfilling fear of social pressure.

Durante el ciclo de la vida, los individuos se ven expuestos a distintos factores tanto exógenos como endógenos, con diversas consecuencias sobre el comportamiento y el bienestar de los mismos. Entender la forma en que dichos factores afectan desenlaces de interés tanto a nivel individual como agregado, permite formular políticas públicas que mitiguen o potencien los efectos encontrados. En esta tesis analizo como factores socio-económicos, ambientales y genéticos afectan las decisiones de consumo y los niveles de salud de los individuos. En el primer capítulo de esta tesis, evalúo el efecto de una asignación gratuita de agua otorgada a hogares de bajos niveles socio-económicos en la ciudad de Bogotá (Colombia). Específicamente, evalúo el efecto de la asignación sobre las decisiones de consumo de agua de los individuos, encontrando que gracias a la intervención, los hogares incrementan su consumo de agua, al tiempo que experimentan una disminución en la factura del agua. Este resultado sugiere que la asignación funciona como una transferencia en efectivo. Adicionalmente, encuentro un incremento en el porcentaje de hogares que poseen un lavamanos; de esta forma el subsidio genera un incremento en el consumo de bienes durables relacionados con el consumo de agua. Finalmente, encuentro que entre la población más vulnerable, hay una disminución en la prevalencia de diarrea en menores de cinco años. En el segundo capítulo, analizo como la asociación entre variantes genéticas relacionadas con la obesidad y el índice de masa corporal (IMC) varía a lo largo del ciclo de la vida en varias cohortes poblacionales en Estados Unidos. Para tal fin empleo puntuaciones poligénicas, índices que resumen el riesgo genético de las personas hacia un elevado IMC. Encuentro que el efecto de las puntuaciones poligénicas del IMC sobre el IMC aumenta significativamente a medida que los adolescentes pasan a la edad adulta. Sin embargo, este no es el caso de las personas mayores de 55 años, cuya influencia genética en el IMC es notablemente estable a medida que avanzan hacia la vejez. Finalmente, en el último capítulo, evalúo el efecto que tienen los niveles de lluvia sobre medidas objetivas de salud mental en un país en vías de desarrollo. Usando un modelo de efectos y datos colombianos, encuentro que incrementos en los niveles de lluvia generan incrementos en el número de intentos de suicidios, en el número de personas tratadas por problemas de salud relacionados con el estrés y en el número de personas tratadas por depresión. A su vez encuentro una relación positiva entre niveles de lluvia y desempleo. Entre la población trabajadora, encuentro que incrementos en los niveles de lluvia únicamente afecta a los trabajadores del sector formal. Este resultado sugiere que los trabajadores del sector informal continúan trabajando aún bajo condiciones climáticas adversas.

La crisis iniciada en 2007 provoco problemas en el mecanismo de transmisión de la política monetaria, como solución, los bancos centrales realizaron políticas: «convencional» y «no convencional», desde un enfoque cuantitativo, pero los resultados no fueron rápidos y los problemas se agudizaban. El día 27/07/2012 con unas palabras del presidente Mario Draghi, se produjeron cambios rápidos y significativos en los mercados financieros, resaltando la importancia de las expectativas. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo el estudio de las políticas monetarias para comprender cuáles fueron los factores ocurridos, con el fin de integrar la gestión de las expectativas como instrumento del marco operativo del banco central europeo. En el trabajo se realiza un análisis histórico económico, seguido del análisis del diseño del banco central y de su presidente/a, finalizando con técnicas econométricas y de big data para obtener dichos factores, donde se encuentran diferencias econométricas entre los bonos gubernamentales Europeos, debido a la racionalidad.

La tesis engloba tres capítulos: el primero sobre fertilidad y "calidad" infantil, el segundo sobre planificación familiar y salud infantil, y el tercero sobre la estimación de un indicador de la actividad económica agregada regional. Concretamente, el primer capítulo examina empíricamente usando un modelo de diferencia-en-diferencias con efectos fijos, cómo un aumento inesperado de riqueza (proveniente de una transferencia intergeneracional) afecta a la fertilidad y la inversión de los padres en la calidad de los hijos. Se encuentra un efecto negativo en la cantidad de hijos junto a un efecto positivo en la calidad de los hijos demandados por los hogares. Estos efectos ocurren en diferentes momentos del tiempo para la muestra completa. En el corto plazo se observa una reducción de la fertilidad mientras que en el largo plazo se observa un aumento de la inversión en calidad infantil. También se encuentra un efecto positivo en la inversión en calidad infantil a corto plazo para las parejas que ya tenían hijos. En el segundo capítulo se evalúa una política, estudiando el impacto de haber sido expuesto a un programa de planificación familiar que promovió la anticoncepción quirúrgica/esterilización por primera vez en Perú (Programa de Salud Reproductiva y Planificación Familiar o PNSRPF, 1996- 2000). Los resultados muestran un mayor uso de métodos anticonceptivos temporales y permanentes entre las mujeres expuestas al programa y un menor riesgo de mortalidad infantil entre sus hijos. Este efecto es, en parte, debido a la prolongación de la lactancia materna. Finalmente, en el tercer capítulo se estima un indicador resumen de la actividad económica agregada, en frecuencia mensual, para las regiones españolas. Se utiliza un Modelo de Factores Dinámico dada la escasez de datos a nivel regional. Los indicadores estimados muestran la heterogeneidad del sistema productivo entre regiones a través de la inclusión de diferentes variables con el fin de reflejar con mayor precisión la evolución económica regional. Los indicadores obtenidos son especialmente útiles para estimar el impacto económico del reciente brote de COVID 19 a nivel regional en España. La presente red docente se ha centrado en la creación, implementación y evaluación de una experiencia en la enseñanza de Estadística y Econometría, con el objetivo de facilitar el logro de aprendizajes y competencias de los estudiantes, así como el de promover el trabajo colaborativo en entornos virtuales. En esta experiencia educativa los principales actores implicados han sido los propios alumnos y ha derivado en la creación de nuevo material digital creado completamente por ellos de manera colaborativa, y que ha sido compartido con los alumnos matriculados en el presente curso académico 2020-21. Este nuevo material es complementario al ya existente en la asignatura Estadística e introducción a la Econometría de 2º curso del grado de Administración y Dirección de Empresas (ADE) de la Universidad de Alicante (UA). Además, se ha realizado una evaluación de la experiencia mediante el análisis de percepción por parte de los estudiantes matriculados en los grupos 2 y 4 de la citada asignatura.

Chile, pese a sus buenos resultados macroeconómicos se encuentra entre los países del mundo con mayor desigualdad, un problema que persiste en el tiempo. Este trabajo tiene por objetivo entregar evidencia empírica que explique la relación entre desigualdad del ingreso y crecimiento económico desde una perspectiva regional, en el período 1990-2017. Para ello el Capítulo 1 retrata la dinámica de las desigualdades chilenas a través de la construcción de una amplia base de datos para las 15 regiones del país. Los resultados revelan la gran heterogeneidad de las regiones, siendo en general las del sur las perdedoras en materia de desarrollo y equidad. Se observa que la desigualdad chilena es alta y persistente, lo que motiva el Capítulo 2, cuyo objetivo es identificar los principales determinantes de la desigualdad del ingreso. A través de un análisis econométrico con datos de panel se demuestra una relación cuadrática (en forma de U) entre el PIB per cápita y la desigualdad, comportamiento observado también en países como Estados Unidos (EE.UU.) y Reino Unido. Si bien, altos ingresos disminuyen la desigualdad, la tendencia negativa se convierte en positiva a partir de un cierto nivel de renta. Se revela que, la actividad económica principal de la región; la concentración de la población indígena, que se relaciona con mayores niveles de inequidad; y el capital humano, que favorece la equidad, son importantes y robustos determinantes de la desigualdad del ingreso chilena. Entendiendo que el crecimiento de las regiones de Chile no es inclusivo, ya que no todos se ven beneficiados de la mayor renta promedio del país, es natural cuestionarse si esta desigualdad está mermando el crecimiento. Ante ello, el Capítulo 3 responde a las preguntas ¿cuál es el efecto de la desigualdad del ingreso sobre el crecimiento económico? y ¿es diferente la relación desigualdad-crecimiento para Chile que para el conjunto de países latinoamericanos? Se propone un análisis econométrico basado principalmente en las metodologías utilizadas por Forbes (2000), Ríos (2003) y Rayuela, Veneri, y Ramos (2019), quienes estiman el crecimiento en función de la desigualdad, el ingreso inicial, y otras variables de control. Utilizando cuatro medidas diferentes de desigualdad: índice de Gini; ratio 20/20; ratio 20/80 e índice de Palma (ratio 10/40), se muestra que a nivel de países latinoamericanos el impacto negativo de la desigualdad sobre el crecimiento se ve atenuado por el nivel de desarrollo, volviéndose positivo para países de desarrollo relativamente alto como Chile o Argentina. Por su parte, los resultados de las regiones chilenas evidencian una relación en forma de U invertida entre la desigualdad y el crecimiento, sin embargo, el efecto regional es, en promedio, positivo. A raíz de los resultados obtenidos, se ha observado que el crecimiento de Chile ha ido perdiendo dinamismo, sobre todo a partir del año 2014, asimismo, se ha concluido que las variables sectoriales juegan un papel importante tanto como determinantes de la desigualdad como del crecimiento. Ante ello surgen las preguntas ¿cómo es el patrón de crecimiento de Chile? ¿qué papel juegan los distintos sectores de la economía? En respuesta, el Capítulo 4 expone el proceso de crecimiento chileno, explora el rol de los sectores intensivos en recursos naturales y aborda el problema de la Productividad Total de los Factores (PTF) y su posible relación con la desigualdad. La metodología central es la contabilidad del crecimiento. De este capítulo se desprende que la dinámica del crecimiento chileno está determinada por el bajo e incluso negativo crecimiento de la PTF, y la baja contribución del capital humano (al crecimiento del valor agregado). Se observa una correlación negativa entre la desigualdad y el crecimiento de la PTF a nivel nacional y regional. Se concluye con una reflexión sobre la importancia de diseñar políticas públicas desde una perspectiva regional que tenga en cuenta la heterogeneidad del territorio chileno.

We study the Covid-19 pandemic from the point of view of behavioral economics, which combines economics and psychology. We analyze the biases (for example, optimism bias) that may have had a greater impact on decision-making regarding the pandemic, as well as potential public health policies from a behavioral economics perspective. We contrast the use of «nudges» (non-coercive measures that do not use economic incentives) with legislative measures, and we advocate for a comprehensive approach that jointly uses the best interventions available, to generate healthy habits (that reduce the transmission of the virus). Finally, we apply this approach to the promotion of vaccination. Estudiamos la pandemia de Covid-19 desde el punto de vista de la economía del comportamiento, que aúna economía y psicología. Analizamos los sesgos (por ejemplo, exceso de optimismo) que pueden haber tenido un mayor impacto en la toma de decisiones referentes a la pandemia, así como posibles políticas de salud pública desde el enfoque de la economía del comportamiento. Contrastamos el uso de «nudges» (medidas no coercitivas y que no usan incentivos económicos) con medidas legislativas, y abogamos por un enfoque integral que utilice las mejores intervenciones disponibles en conjunto, para generar hábitos de conducta saludables (que reduzcan la transmisión del virus). Por último, aplicamos este enfoque a la promoción de la vacunación.

La temática central del proyecto está referida a la aceptación de las innovaciones educativas por parte del estudiantado. Desde el 14 marzo de 2020, el Gobierno español decretó la entrada en vigor del estado de alarma en todo el territorio nacional debido a la pandemia mundial por Coronavirus, y toda la comunidad universitaria, al igual que todos los entornos docentes, se vio abocada a una inmersión total en las tecnologías para continuar con el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. El sistema docente, incluido el universitario, de manera forzada, tuvo que aprender nuevas herramientas de organización, de evaluación, de colaboración, de formación y también de comunicación que han sido adoptadas con mayor o menor facilidad y con mayor o menor voluntariedad. La aceptación de las innovaciones es fundamental para tener éxito (Brown y Karagozoglu, 1989), mientras que los efectos negativos a largo plazo están asociados al uso forzoso de tales innovaciones (Ram y Jung, 1991). Esta investigación se interesa en conocer los efectos positivos, pero también los efectos negativos para poder mejorarlos y alcanzar una docencia de éxito en cursos futuros.

We consider two manufacturers producing two symmetric and independent goods. They sell them through two undifferentiated retailers (homogeneous retailers). Manufacturers propose linear contracts. Before supply contracts are set by producers, retailers decide whether to be a multi‐product retailer by carrying the two goods or a single product retailer and sell only one good. In this symmetric setting, we find asymmetric retail formats in equilibrium, which results in lower total welfare compared to a situation where both retailers would be multi‐product retailers. Este trabajo tiene como propósito dar una visión de la integración actual que tiene el Mercosur, así como de estudiar su viabilidad actual, dando respuesta a si el Mercosur ha fracasado como unión o si por lo contrario no termina de desarrollarse. Para ello primero hablaremos de la historia del Mercosur, para ver como se ha ido desarrollando, así como de las crisis que han afrontado los países miembros en su contexto. Procederemos a explicar cómo funciona el Mercosur tanto en lo institucional como en la integración financiera que presenta, con el fin de poderlo comparar con otra unión latinoamericana como es la Comunidad Andina de las Naciones. Por último, explicaremos como ha surgido la Unión Monetaria Europea y la experiencia que esta misma desprende, con el fin de obtener valores clave para saber si el Mercosur está siguiendo un camino correcto o si peligra su continuidad.

El Programa de Acción Tutorial de la Facultad de Económicas (PATEC) se entiende como una experiencia educativa de orientación cuyo objetivo es desarrollar acciones de apoyo dirigidas a lograr un mayor nivel de formación del alumnado y un mayor éxito en sus resultados de aprendizaje a lo largo de su carrera académica. Este objetivo cobra especial relevancia en el contexto actual caracterizado por los efectos que está provocando la COVID-19 y que afectan directamente al alumnado. Es por ello que la Red de Tutores del PATEC durante el curso 2020-2021 ha centrado su atención en conocer la percepción del alumnado ante esta situación. Para ello se ha diseñado una encuesta para analizar cómo ha afectado la pandemia al estudiantado en distintos ámbitos y si conocen, usan y están satisfechos con los recursos que la UA ha implementado ante esta situación. Los resultados nos han permitido conocer las necesidades de atención tutorial en el nuevo contexto de enseñanza-aprendizaje, la emergencia de nuevas necesidades académicas y el desarrollo de nuevas habilidades académicas del alumnado a la hora de hacer frente a este nuevo contexto.

This is the first paper to examine the role of the real estate sector and housing unaffordability in the determination of systemic risk. We measure the systemic risk of the UK by employing the ΔCoVaR method developed by Adrian and Brunnermeier [(2016). CoVaR. American Economic Review, 106(7), 1705–1741] and we explore both its cross-sectional and time series behaviour. Regarding the former, we show that when the real estate sector is under distress the tail risk of the entire financial system increases significantly. With respect to the latter, the findings of our dynamic model suggest that sustainable house prices positively contribute to the stability of the financial sector; whilst house price exuberance and rapid increases in housing unaffordability amplify systemic risk. Finally, we examine the conjecture that the banking sector comprises a transmission channel from the housing market to systemic risk. Our empirical results are in line with this argument and highlight the key role of housing unaffordability.

Esta tesis es una colección de tres ensayos en el campo de la economía industrial. Los dos primeros ensayos son contribuciones empíricas en el tema de la discriminación de precios. El último ensayo está relacionado con la heterogeneidad en las expectativas futuras de precios. Ese ensayo es una contribución a la literatura que trata el tema de demanda dinámica. El objetivo del primer capítulo es determinar la relevancia de la discriminación de precios en los mercados de alimentos orgánicos (cereales para desayuno). El principal problema al responder a esta pregunta es que los costes no son observables y, por lo tanto, a priori, no puedo saber si el sobreprecio de los alimentos orgánicos se debe a la discriminación precios o simplemente por diferencias de costes. Para evitar este problema, utilizo un modelo de elección discreta para obtener la elasticidad de la demanda y, con un modelo de oferta, obtener el valor de los costes marginales. Lo resultados indican que, aproximadamente, el 6% de la diferencia de precio entre productos orgánicos y productos no orgánicos se debe a la discriminación de precios. Además, yo encuentro que un impuesto en los productos no orgánicos no es suficiente para disminuir la discriminación de precios, y tiene un efecto negativo en el bienestar social: hay reducción en el excedente del consumidor que es superior al aumento de los beneficios de las empresas. Por fin, encuentro que la discriminación de precios resulta de la existencia de consumidores con renta alta en el mercado. En el segundo capítulo yo estudio si hay una relación no monótona entre los descuentos por cantidad y el nivel de competencia en el mercado. Los resultados encontrados sugieren que la relación es sí no-monótona y que tiene formato en U. Eso implica que los descuentos por cantidad son más comunes en los mercados menos concentrados y en los más concentrados. Además, los resultados sugieren que la firma líder es la responsable por esa situación. Por fin, el tercer capítulo analiza la heterogeneidad en la expectativa de precios en el mercado de un bien no duradero (refrescos) y que son comprados con alta frecuencia. Los resultados sugieren que, en media, los consumidores son racionales y forman expectativas con respecto al futuro. Sin embargo, consumidores de baja renta forman expectativas basadas en un modelo de Markov de primer orden (donde solo importa el precio actual y del período anterior para formar sus expectativas), y a los consumidores con renta mediana solo les importa el precio actual al decidir comprar (o sea, son impacientes - miopes).
