Kelp forests are critical marine ecosystems that provide habitat and ecological services, as well as economic benefits. However, kelp forests worldwide are facing multiple pressures, including climate change and human activities. In this study, we investigated whether recruitment success, an infrequently recorded variable in kelp monitoring studies, was affected in degraded kelp reefs where adult golden kelps (Laminaria ochroleuca) were persistently absent due to fish consumption. We conducted a three-year seasonal monitoring of kelp recruits and juveniles in both healthy and degraded kelp reefs in northwest Spain. Our findings reveal a decline in spring kelp recruitment over time on degraded reefs, while it remained stable on healthy reefs. The results indicate that continued herbivory pressure can decrease kelp recruitment, suggesting the potential exhaustion of kelp stand resilience. Altogether, our study highlights the importance of biotic interactions, such as herbivory, in understanding changes in kelp forest dynamics. La historia de Montserrat Martínez Ortega, catedrática de la Universidad de Salamanca y mostrar todo el desarrollo de una de las investigaciones en las que participa, ha sido la inspiración y transversalidad del proyecto.

The potential bioaccumulation of pollutants, such as heavy metals, may pose a threat to the western Mediterranean chondrichthyans and human consumers. Therefore, the first extensive assessment of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu) concentrations in the muscle tissue of 17 species of sharks, rays, and chimaeras in this region was conducted via Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE) and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (GFAAS). Significant differences between species were observed, particularly related to the rabbit fish (Chimaera monstrosa) and the velvet belly lantern shark (Etmopterus spinax), which exceeded the European Union (EU) Commission Regulation 2023/915 threshold of Cd. Overall, heavy metal concentrations correlated negatively with size and trophic level but positively with depth. Although the consumption of these species may entail minimal risk to adult humans, caution is advised, especially for children. These findings are important due to the widespread consumption of chondrichthyans in many western Mediterranean regions

The Balearic Archipelago (western Mediterranean) is an area of great ecological interest due to the combination of complex geomorphology, highly oligotrophic waters and low fishing pressure. Sponges play a key role in benthic habitats, providing structural complexity and significantly contributing to their diversity and biomass. Here, we present an insight into the sponge communities of this archipelago from the analysis of samples collected during several scientific research surveys carried out on bottom trawl fishing grounds around the Balearic Islands and on sedimentary and rocky bottoms of the Mallorca Channel seamounts. Sampling was carried out with experimental bottom trawl, beam trawl, rock dredge and remotely operated vehicle (ROV). We analyzed species presence/absence data using multivariate methods in order to identify assemblages. Once identified, we characterized their biodiversity, biomass and taxonomic composition. A dbRDA analysis was conducted to test the influence of environmental variables and fishing pressure on the sponge communities. Up to 350 species are reported: 220 at bottom trawl fishing grounds and 189 at seamounts. Communities were structured by depth, temperature, currents, substrate and fishing pressure with sponge presence/absense, biomass and diversity also linked to the presence of deep algae beds. Taxonomic composition differed between bottom trawl fishing grounds and the seamounts, where this fishing activity is almost negligible, pointing to different sensitivity to this fishing impact among the different orders, particularly for Tetractinellida, which was much more diverse and abundant at seamounts.

Successful marine spatial planning relies on understanding patterns of human use, with accurate, detailed, and up-to-date information about the spatial distribution of fishing effort. In commercial vessels, tracking systems like the vessel monitoring system (VMS) or the automatic identification system (AIS) have helped to maintain and enhance the biodiversity of areas by generating large sources of positional data that served for commercial marine spatial planning. However, there is no regulation regarding location systems such as VMS or AIS for marine recreational fishing boats. Obtaining spatial data on marine recreational fishing can be difficult and time-intensive given the widespread and variable nature of the fleet. Remote cameras and computer vision systems are increasingly used to overcome the cost limitations of these conventional methods. Here we show a novel high-resolution and low-cost tracking system based on photo time-lapses and state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms, including deep learning, to automatically classify and obtain precise trajectories of fishing and cruising boats in coastal areas. Our method contributes to the automatic surveillance of marine protected areas by providing an image-based tool for automatic, real-time monitoring. Our method also allows for determining the intensity and spatial-temporal distribution of recreational fishing effort, important to defining the sustainability of the activity and coastal areas. We finally discuss the opportunities and limitations of computer vision tools applied to marine recreational fisheries spatial planning.

The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to assess the presence of biological communities has emerged as a promising monitoring tool in the marine conservation landscape. Moreover, advances in Next-Generation Sequencing techniques, such as DNA metabarcoding, enable multi-species detection in mixed samples, allowing the study of complex ecosystems such as oceanic ones. We aimed at using these molecular-based techniques to characterise cetacean communities, as well as potential prey in the northern coast of Mainland Portugal. During seasonal campaigns, we collected seawater samples, along with visual records of cetacean occurrence. The eDNA extracted from 64 environmental samples was sequenced in an Illumina platform, with universal primers targeting marine vertebrates. Five cetacean species were identified by molecular detection: common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus). Overall, except for the fin whale (not sighted during the campaigns), this cetacean community composition was similar to that obtained through visual monitoring, and the complementary results suggest their presence in the region all year round. In addition, the positive molecular detections of B. physalus are of special relevance since there are no visual records reported in the area. The detection of multiple known preys of the identified dolphins indicates they use these coastal areas for feeding purposes. While this methodological approach remains in a development stage, the present work highlights the benefits of using eDNA to study marine communities, with specific applications for research on cetacean distribution and feeding ecology, ultimately serving as the baseline of a methodological approach for biodiversity monitoring and marine conservation

Monitoring threatened species is essential for setting conservation priorities and measures to prevent species extinction. The endemic species Pinna nobilis is now classified on the IUCN Red List as a critically endangered species, with the only possibility to observe entire populations in very specific coastal areas, and a few resistant individuals in open waters. Thus, monitoring and management of these populations are crucial to avoid global species extinction. The present study aims to monitor P. nobilis Mar Menor's coastal lagoon population and to evaluate its possible resilience to recuperate from several environmental catastrophes and human mediated impacts that drastically decimated the population between 2016 and 2019. To do so, between 2019 and 2022, we assessed its population maintenance and its reproductive success. First, we monitored changes in overall densities and shell growth, and we installed between 23 and 45 larvae collectors to assess reproductive success. We observed stabilization of population densities and positive shell growth of individuals. However, no incorporation of recruits into this ageing population was observed. Our results highlighted the lack of species recovery and the first signs of probable local population extinction. Therefore, urgent management and conservation actions focused on restoring the ecosystem and protecting P. nobilis individuals are needed to avoid this population extinction and loss of one of the last reservoirs of this emblematic species.

Pockmarks are concave depressions on the sea bottom produced by fluid escape from subaqueous sediments which can be found worldwide in muddy and silt/clay sediments. Due to their morphological and geochemical characteristics, certain pockmarks play an important role in structuring benthic communities, and consequently, they have been proposed to be protected. The present research provides a characterisation of the benthic macrofauna composition in pockmark fields in the southeaster Bay of Biscay. A total of 11 samples were acquired in and close to pockmarks covering a range of depths of 414–992 m. The survey strategy considered the acquisition of one sample inside of each of the selected pockmarks and another sample near, but out of them. Collected macrofaunal organisms were identified at lowest taxonomical level (species) when possible, structural parameters were calculated and a hierarchical cluster analysis carried out with species data. Species density, biomass, richness, diversity and evenness were found to be higher in samples collected inside pockmarks in comparison to samples obtained outside but not statistically significant. This could be explained by the inactivity of the studied pockmarks, which do not offer/generate a particular environment with unusual characteristics that limit or enhance the development of specific species/groups with special traits.

[EN] A monthly, seasonal and annual climatological aridity gridded data set over Spain (Iberian Peninsula territories, Balearic and Canary islands) between January 1961 and December 2020. The aridity index is a measure of the dryness or humidity of a region's climate, and along with average temperature, it is one of the climatic factors that best explain the distribution of different biomes on the planet. From the meteorological observation data of the National Climate Data Bank of the State Agency AEMET, and using the experience and methods developed by the research team for the elaboration of other databases such as the Historical Database of Drought in Spain (https://monitordesequia.csic.es/historico), a grid database of the Aridity Index defined by the United Nations Environmental Program has been obtained: (AI, mm / mm) as the ratio of precipitation (P, mm) to potential evapotranspiration (PET, mm): AI = P / PET. Here we use ETo (reference evapotranspiration), as computed by the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith equation. Data for P and ETo have been obtained from the Historical Database of Drought in Spain (https://monitordesequia.csic.es/historico). Both the time series and the climatologies of the periods/subperiods at monthly, seasonal and annual time scales have been calculated. Here we shall consider the period 1961-2020, spanning 60 years. This time frame can be sub-divided into two equal 30-year periods, also known as normal-periods: 1961-1990 and 1991-2020. [Background]: Poriferans (sponges) are highly adaptable organisms that can thrive in diverse marine and freshwater environments due, in part, to their close associations with internal microbial communities. This sponge microbiome can be acquired from the surrounding environment (horizontal acquisition) or obtained from the parents during the reproductive process through a variety of mechanisms (vertical transfer), typically resulting in the presence of symbiotic microbes throughout all stages of sponge development. How and to what extent the different components of the microbiome are transferred to the developmental stages remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the microbiome composition of a common, low-microbial-abundance, Atlantic-Mediterranean sponge, Crambe crambe, throughout its ontogeny, including adult individuals, brooded larvae, lecithotrophic free-swimming larvae, newly settled juveniles still lacking osculum, and juveniles with a functional osculum for filter feeding., [Results]: Using 16S rRNA gene analysis, we detected distinct microbiome compositions in each ontogenetic stage, with variations in composition, relative abundance, and diversity of microbial species. However, a particular dominant symbiont, Candidatus Beroebacter blanensis, previously described as the main symbiont of C. crambe, consistently occurred throughout all stages, an omnipresence that suggests vertical transmission from parents to offspring. This symbiont fluctuated in relative abundance across developmental stages, with pronounced prevalence in lecithotrophic stages. A major shift in microbial composition occurred as new settlers completed osculum formation and acquired filter-feeding capacity. Candidatus Beroebacter blanensis decreased significatively at this point. Microbial diversity peaked in filter-feeding stages, contrasting with the lower diversity of lecithotrophic stages. Furthermore, individual specific transmission patterns were detected, with greater microbial similarity between larvae and their respective parents compared to non-parental conspecifics., [Conclusions]: These findings suggest a putative vertical transmission of the dominant symbiont, which could provide some metabolic advantage to non-filtering developmental stages of C. crambe. The increase in microbiome diversity with the onset of filter-feeding stages likely reflects enhanced interaction with environmental microbes, facilitating horizontal transmission. Conversely, lower microbiome diversity in lecithotrophic stages, prior to filter feeding, suggests incomplete symbiont transfer or potential symbiont digestion. This research provides novel information on the dynamics of the microbiome through sponge ontogeny, on the strategies for symbiont acquisition at each ontogenetic stage, and on the potential importance of symbionts during larval development.

Cold-Water Corals play a paramount role in marine benthic ecosystems, increasing their complexity and providing spawning and nursery habitats to many species. However, due to their sessile lifestyle and ramified shape they are commonly entangled in nets and even by-caught during the practice of bottom-contact fishing, which includes impacts from both large-scale activities such as trawling and small-scale fishing (e.g., trammel nets or pots). In this context, passive and active restoration measures are crucial to avoid their damage and disappearance, which might cause the consequent loss of complexity and biodiversity of marine benthic communities. With the aim of modifying these fishing practices in the Marine Protected Area of Cap de Creus (North-Western Mediterranean), small-scale fishers and scientists (marine biologists) started a Participatory Process in which they agreed to develop a joint marine conservation program combining two distinct projects: a restoration project of the Cold-Water Corals incidentally captured on fishing nets for their subsequent reintroduction at sea (RESCAP project) and also a project on mitigation of fishing impacts on marine benthic communities (MITICAP project). Collaborative actions were carried out including interviews and exchanges of information with the purpose of collecting all the knowledge required for conducting the actions of the projects. This study shows the results of the assessment throughout five years (2017-2022) of cooperative work and highlights how crucial it is to develop long-term and revisable ocean literacy strategies for ensuring a sustainable ocean governance. An ocean literacy test evaluated the scientific knowledge of fishers at the end of the projects and revealed that despite all the efforts applied, still more work is needed, which reinforces the importance of improving the strategies of knowledge transfer for MPA management. Shallow lakes in semi-arid environments are very sensitive to hydrological alterations associated with climate change. Their shorelines and geometry can change according to water level fluctuations. Gallocanta Lake (NE Spain) is a typical example of such lacustrine conditions because it is exposed to strong winds parallel to its elongation axis and is located in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment. In this work, a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) of the area is used to compare the distribution of coastal forms (beaches, barrier islands, deltas, lagoons, etc.) with the frequency at which different water levels are attained. As a result, a clear relationship is obtained between presently active forms and the water levels most frequently reached in the lake. It is deduced that, once formed, the surrounding coastal plains related to these coastal forms control the permanence of water around a given height interval, favouring the development of these morphologies, in a positive feedback mechanism only broken by subsequent climate warming and lake water lowering. The hydrodynamic conditions responsible for activating the coastal forms have been analysed by applying a mathematical model of wind-driven currents in the lake that predicts the present erosional/progradational trends associated with them. The combination of the different results obtained was used to generate a synthetic map of active coastal processes and trends along the lake shore during high water episodes, with two versions according to the two dominant wind scenarios in the region. The distribution of erosion/sedimentation trends along the lake shores has helped to propose the existence of longitudinal littoral cells, each one recording different shoreline trend (retreat, progradation, and stability), depending on the prevailing wind scenario. This synthetic scheme can be useful for predicting the eco-morphological trends of the lake shore and adapting the present management practices in thi

leading to multi-faceted ecological, economic and health impacts worldwide. The Iberian Peninsula comprises an exceptionally biodiverse Mediterranean region with a high number of threatened and endemic aquatic species, most of them strongly impacted by biological invasions. Following a structured approach that combines a systematic review of available information and expert opinion, we provide a comprehensive and updated multi-taxa inventory of aquatic NIS (fungi, macroalgae, vascular plants, invertebrates and vertebrates) in Iberian inland waters. Moreover, we assess overall patterns in the establishment status, introduction pathways, native range and temporal introduction trends of listed NIS. In addition, we discuss the legal coverage provided by both national (Spanish and Portuguese) and European NIS regulations. We inventoried 326 aquatic NIS in Iberian inland waters, including 215 established, 96 with uncertain establishment status and 15 cryptogenic taxa. Invertebrates (54.6%) and vertebrates (24.5%) were the groups with the highest number of NIS, with Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Chordata being the most represented phyla. Recorded NIS originated from diverse geographic regions, with North and South America being the most frequent. Vertebrates and vascular plants were mostly introduced through intentional pathways (i.e. release and escape), whereas invertebrates and macroalgae arrived mostly through unintentional ways (i.e. contaminant or stowaway). Most of the recorded NIS were introduced in Iberian inland waters over the second half of the 20th century, with a high number of NIS introductions being reported in the 2000s. While only 8% of the recorded NIS appear in the European Union list of Invasive Alien Species of Union concern, around 25% are listed in the Spanish and Portuguese NIS regulations. This study provides the most updated checklist of Iberian aquatic NIS, meeting the requirements set by the EU regulation and providing a baseline for the evaluation

As offshore wind energy expands in Europe, maritime planners increasingly need to consider the potential effects of these activities on the different types of marine protected areas (MPAs), including Natura 2000 sites. The aim of this article is to critically review the initial development of offshore wind energy inside and/or in the vicinity of Mediterranean Natura 2000 sites and other types of MPAs. The western Mediterranean Sea is taken as an example as this is where most of the offshore wind developments have been proposed. In order to open up discussion of offshore wind energy policy and guide ecological research that supports holistic decisions regarding offshore wind farm (OWF) installation in the region, we (i) outline the context of Natura 2000 and other MPA policy in the Mediterranean for OWF development, (ii) summarize the potential impacts of OWF on EU-protected habitats and species, (iii) assess the interactions of OWFs, the Natura 2000 sites, and other MPAs, and (iv) propose recommendations to approach OWF development in the Mediterranean in order to safeguard the Natura 2000 sites and other MPAs. After documenting the potential overlaps between OWFs and MPAs in the western Mediterranean, we recommend OWFs be placed outside Natura 2000 and other MPA sites, including their buffer zones. We also advocate for rigorous and independent Appropriate Assessments to be carried out for OWF proposals that could affect protected areas

Monitoring compliance with environmental laws is essential to overcoming possible implementation shortfalls jeopardizing their effectiveness. Besides improving our ecological understanding of wildlife, remote tracking technologies also allow us to take advantage of such ecological knowledge to use wildlife as sentinels of compliance with law. We illustrate this sentinel potential of wildlife using GPS-tracking of large scavengers with complementary functional traits (i.e., 21 griffon vultures and 13 wolves) to assess compliance with EU sanitary regulations allowing livestock carcass disposal in the field. Wildlife sentinels allowed the systematic evaluation of 489 livestock carcasses left in the field, which revealed an important mismatch between on-paper and in-reality implementation of these regulations. While <45 % of the carcasses were placed in authorized areas, compliance with all the criteria required by the regulations on livestock carcass disposal (e.g., from carcass characteristics such as species, age, or production system to its location far away from water, buildings, or roads) ranged from 0 to 4.2%, with no major differences between regions with uneven implementation. Major gaps in compliance pointed towards insufficient and over-bureaucratized designation of Scavenger Feeding Zones (SFZs), where livestock carcass disposal is authorized. The indiscriminate nature of distance criteria from carcasses to watercourses, buildings, and infrastructure further affected compliance. Synthesis and applications: GPS-tagged scavengers allow the on-ground monitoring of carcasses, the addressing of potential risks for wildlife, livestock, and human health, the quantitative assessment of compliance with the law and would improve estimates of carcass availability, substantially contributing to more effective legislation enforcement. Our results show the huge potential of GPS-tagged wildlife as sentinels for monitoring compliance to enhance the environmental rule of law

[EN] Surveys based on abundance indices may still be the most cost-efficient method for monitoring programmes that aim to be extensive in time or space, but it is important to take into account differences in activity patterns when combining data collected at different times or from different areas. The European Turtle-dove Streptopelia turtur is a migratory game species that has declined in recent decades and for which identifying efficient and easy-to-apply monitoring schemes to assess changes in abundance is critical for adaptive management. We describe variation in cooing activity to help optimising Turtle Dove abundance monitoring schemes based on point-counts of cooing males. Cooing activity (number of minutes during a ten-minute sampling period when each Turtle Dove was cooing) declined markedly and linearly throughout the morning; in addition, it increased slightly from May to late June, and declined abruptly in the second half of July. The number of different turtle doves detected per ten-minute period significantly declined with time since dawn and was markedly lower after mid-July. Predicted abundance per observation point at dawn on 25 June (from a GLM per region including time and a quadratic relationship with date), correlated tightly (r = 0.95) with the average number of turtle doves detected at each point over multiple visits during the breeding season. Correlation of the latter with the number of birds observed in a single visit during the breeding period was weaker (0.68 ± 0.02). Estimated abundance per point was higher the longer the monitoring bout duration, but five-minute periods allowed detecting c. 80% of birds detected during ten-minute periods. La actividad de canto (el número de minutos durante un período de muestreo de 10 minutos en los que cada tórtola se escuchó cantando al menos una vez) disminuyó marcada y linealmente a lo largo de la mañana; además, aumentó levemente desde mayo a fines de junio, disminuyendo abruptamente en la segunda quincena de julio. Aquatic ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to the introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS), leading to multi-faceted ecological, economic and health impacts worldwide. The Iberian Peninsula comprises an exceptionally biodiverse Mediterranean region with a high number of threatened and endemic aquatic species, most of them strongly impacted by biological invasions. Following a structured approach that combines a systematic review of available information and expert opinion, we provide a comprehensive and updated multi-taxa inventory of aquatic NIS (fungi, macroalgae, vascular plants, invertebrates and vertebrates) in Iberian inland waters. Moreover, we assess overall patterns in the establishment status, introduction pathways, native range and temporal introduction trends of listed NIS. In addition, we discuss the legal coverage provided by both national (Spanish and Portuguese) and European NIS regulations. We inventoried 326 aquatic NIS in Iberian inland waters, including 215 established, 96 with uncertain establishment status and 15 cryptogenic taxa. Invertebrates (54.6%) and vertebrates (24.5%) were the groups with the highest number of NIS, with Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Chordata being the most represented phyla. Recorded NIS originated from diverse geographic regions, with North and South America being the most frequent. Vertebrates and vascular plants were mostly introduced through intentional pathways (i.e. release and escape), whereas invertebrates and macroalgae arrived mostly through unintentional ways (i.e. contaminant or stowaway). Most of the recorded NIS were introduced in Iberian inland waters over the second half of the 20th century, with a high number of NIS introductions being reported in the 2000s. While only 8% of the recorded NIS appear in the European Union list of Invasive Alien Species of Union concern, around 25% are listed in the Spanish and Portuguese NIS regulations. The fan mussel Pinna nobilis is experiencing a mass mortality event throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The survival of the remaining isolated populations and the maintenance and reproduction of individuals in captivity could determine the future of the species. This paper examines the clearance rate (CR) and oxygen consumption (VO) of fan mussel individuals measured under 5 different temperatures (8.5, 14, 18, 23 and 28ºC). The measurements of both physiological variables revealed a threshold limit of thermal tolerance at both extreme temperatures, indicating the critical situation of the remaining populations, which are located in coastal lagoons and shallow bays where these extreme temperatures usually occur. Besides, the high clearance rates observed highlight the significant ecosystem service provided by the species in terms of water filtration, especially in confined waters with low renewal rates. Routine control of the clearance rate as an early warning system is proposed for detecting ailing individuals. Such a system could also be used to improve captivity conditions.

Research on the ecology and biology of marine mammal populations is necessary to understand ecosystem dynamics and to support conservation management. Emerging monitoring tools and instruments offer the opportunity to obtain such information in an affordable and effective way. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become an important tool in the study of marine mammals. Here, we reviewed 169 research articles using UAVs to study marine mammals, published up until December 2022. The goals of these studies included estimating the number of individuals in populations and groups via photo-identification, determining biometrics and body condition through photogrammetry, collecting blow samples, and studying behavioural patterns. UAVs can be a valuable, non-invasive, and useful tool for a wide range of applications in marine mammal research. However, it is important to consider some limitations of this technology, mainly associated with autonomy, resistance to the marine environment, and data processing time, which could probably be overcome in the near future.

Artisanal fisheries, although considered less harmful, can still endanger marine ecosystems, especially in areas with long-standing tradition. In Cap de Creus, where artisanal fisheries has likely occurred for centuries, the status of benthic communities in fishing grounds was poorly understood. Through collaboration with local fishers, the benthic assemblages in three artisanal fishing grounds within Cap de Creus Marine Protected Area (MPA) were studied. Using video transects recorded by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the diversity and distribution of species were analysed in relation to substrate type, slope, and depth. The study also assessed the impacts on these communities by examining marine litter, lost fishing gear, and the condition of gorgonian populations. The findings identified three megabenthic assemblages and revealed higher fishing pressure and impact in the Maça d’Oros area, likely due to multiple fishing guilds converging. However, the study demonstrated lower impact in MPAs compared to unprotected Mediterranean areas, highlighting the importance of coastal management

To enrich spatio-temporal information on the distribution of alien, cryptogenic, and neonative species in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, a collective effort by 173 marine scientists was made to provide unpublished records and make them open access to the scientific community. Through this effort, we collected and harmonized a dataset of 12,649 records. It includes 247 taxa, of which 217 are Animalia, 25 Plantae and 5 Chromista, from 23 countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Chordata was the most abundant taxonomic group, followed by Arthropoda, Mollusca, and Annelida. In terms of species records, Siganus luridus, Siganus rivulatus, Saurida lessepsianus, Pterois miles, Upeneus moluccensis, Charybdis (Archias) longicollis, and Caulerpa cylindracea were the most numerous. The temporal distribution of the records ranges from 1973 to 2022, with 44% of the records in 2020–2021. Lethrinus borbonicus is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, while Pomatoschistus quagga, Caulerpa cylindracea, Grateloupia turuturu, and Misophria pallida are first records for the Black Sea; Kapraunia schneideri is recorded for the second time in the Mediterranean and for the first time in Israel; Prionospio depauperata and Pseudonereis anomala are reported for the first time from the Sea of Marmara. Many first country records are also included, namely: Amathia verticillata (Montenegro), Ampithoe valida (Italy), Antithamnion amphigeneum (Greece), Clavelina oblonga (Tunisia and Slovenia), Dendostrea cf. folium (Syria), Epinephelus fasciatus (Tunisia), Ganonema farinosum (Montenegro), Macrorhynchia philippina (Tunisia), Marenzelleria neglecta (Romania), Paratapes textilis (Tunisia), and Botrylloides diegensis (Tunisia).

The invasive seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae has recently arrived in Europe from the western Pacific. Its explosive spread on coastal areas of the Gulf of Cádiz (GoC), Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea is spoiling native coastal ecosystems and inflicting heavy losses on ecosystem services. We discovered for the first time large amounts (up to 17 g m) of detached R. okamurae thalli on deep-sea bottoms of the GoC that are being dragged from the Strait of Gibraltar shores into the NE Atlantic by the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW). Laboratory experiments revealed that collected unattached macroalgae from deep-sea locations were alive and healthy and maintained intact photosynthetic capacity after long dark periods, suggesting a tremendous resilience and invasive potential. Given the rapid transport of healthy thalli by the MOW and massive accumulation of them in the GoC basin, R. okamurae could represent a major threat to NE Atlantic ecosystems, affecting not only coastal but also deep-sea habitats.

In this study, we investigated the presence of the parasite Haplosporidium pinnae, which is a pathogen for the bivalve Pinna nobilis, in water samples from different environments. Fifteen mantle samples of P. nobilis infected by H. pinnae were used to characterize the ribosomal unit of this parasite. The obtained sequences were employed to develop a method for eDNA detection of H. pinnae. We collected 56 water samples (from aquaria, open sea and sanctuaries) for testing the methodology. In this work, we developed three different PCRs generating amplicons of different lengths to determine the level of degradation of the DNA, since the status of H. pinnae in water and, therefore, its infectious capacity are unknown. The results showed the ability of the method to detect H. pinnae in sea waters from different areas persistent in the environment but with different degrees of DNA fragmentation. This developed method offers a new tool for preventive analysis for monitoring areas and to better understand the life cycle and the spread of this parasite.

Fish movements are fundamental to their ecology and survival. Understanding the causes and consequences of the spatial behaviour of fish is of high relevance as it provides critical knowledge for conservation purposes. Skate (Rajidae) populations face an unprecedented global decline due to overfishing. In this study, we used acoustic telemetry to track the movements of nine individuals of the near threatened thornback skate (Raja clavata) around the Cíes Islands, a small marine protected area in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. Our results demonstrate the significant impacts of biotic and abiotic drivers on the spatial behaviour of R. clavata. Overall residency inside the study array was low (0.073), differed between sexes (higher for females) and over the course of the year (peaking in summer). The analysis of the direction of the excursions performed by R. clavata individuals revealed high consistency in the exit and entry areas and a strong connectivity with inshore waters connecting with the Ría de Vigo, as compared with offshore waters connecting with the open ocean. Finally, the activity space of R. clavata also varied over the time of the year with a peak in summer. This study provides an important baseline information for understanding the spatial behaviour of R. clavata that can serve as a starting point for planning future conservation actions or studies

In oceanic ecosystems, the nature of barriers to gene flow and the processes by which populations may become isolated are different from the terrestrial environment, and less well understood. In this study we investigate a highly mobile species (the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus) that is genetically differentiated between an open North Atlantic population and the populations in the Mediterranean Sea. We apply high-resolution single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis to study the nature of barriers to gene flow in this system, assessing the putative boundary into the Mediterranean (Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea region), and including novel analyses on structuring among sperm whale populations within the Mediterranean basin. Our data support a recent founding of the Mediterranean population, around the time of the last glacial maximum, and show concerted historical demographic profiles in both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. In each region there is evidence for a population decline around the time of the founder event. The largest decline was seen within the Mediterranean Sea where effective population size is substantially lower (especially in the eastern basin). While differentiation is strongest at the Atlantic/Mediterranean boundary, there is also weaker but significant differentiation between the eastern and western basins of the Mediterranean Sea. We propose, however, that the mechanisms are different. While post-founding gene flow was reduced between the Mediterranean and Atlantic populations, within the Mediterranean an important factor differentiating the basins is probably a greater degree of admixture between the western basin and the North Atlantic and some level of isolation between the western and eastern Mediterranean basins. Subdivision within the Mediterranean Sea exacerbates conservation concerns and will require consideration of what distinct impacts may affect populations in the two basins

Understanding the chemical composition of our planet's crust was one of the biggest questions of the 20th century. More than 100 years later, we are still far from understanding the global patterns in the bioavailability and spatial coupling of elements in topsoils worldwide, despite their importance for the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we measured the bioavailability and coupling of thirteen macro- and micronutrients and phytotoxic elements in topsoils (3–8 cm) from a range of terrestrial ecosystems across all continents (∼10,000 observations) and in response to global change manipulations (∼5,000 observations). For this, we incubated between 1 and 4 pairs of anionic and cationic exchange membranes per site for a mean period of 53 days. The most bioavailable elements (Ca, Mg, and K) were also amongst the most abundant in the crust. Patterns of bioavailability were biome-dependent and controlled by soil properties such as pH, organic matter content and texture, plant cover, and climate. However, global change simulations resulted in important alterations in the bioavailability of elements. Elements were highly coupled, and coupling was predictable by the atomic properties of elements, particularly mass, mass to charge ratio, and second ionization energy. Deviations from the predictable coupling-atomic mass relationship were attributed to global change and agriculture. Our work illustrates the tight links between the bioavailability and coupling of topsoil elements and environmental context, human activities, and atomic properties of elements, thus deeply enhancing our integrated understanding of the biogeochemical connections that underlie the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems in a changing world.

The development of tourism and intensification of agriculture has released large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus into the Mar Menor coastal lagoon in South-east Spain, resulting in a phytoplankton bloom in 2016. This bloom turned the clear and transparent waters turbid and greenish, and killed approximately 85% of benthic macrophytes. Nutrient bioextraction by flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, has been proposed for remediation of these eutrophication events and water quality recovery. This research aims to quantify the clearance rate and investigate the genetic origin of Mar Menor oysters under eutrophized conditions for potential applications to bioremediation projects. Oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions were replicated in the laboratory, and oyster feeding behaviour (i.e. clearance rates, ingestion rates, absorption efficiency and absorption rates) were studied using a flow-through system. The genetic characterization of oysters showed no significant difference between individuals from the Mar Menor and individuals collected from a nearby Mediterranean bed (Tabarca Island). Based on the physiological results observed, oysters were grouped into high-feeder (HF) and low-feeder (LF) categories according to their clearance rate, that was 3-fold higher in the HF group. Different responses in feeding behaviour were observed under eutrophic conditions in both oyster groups. Constraints in the absorption capacity of LF oysters seemed to be related to their reduced filtering activity. Lower body condition of LF oysters was evidenced by their negative scope for growth value. From this work, several conclusions can be drawn for future restoration/bioextraction actions: (i) the recovery of half of the oyster population that existed in the past would act as an effective top-down control on the phytoplankton community; (ii) using clearance rate measurements is recommended to select oysters as broodstock; and (iii) Mediterranean oysters could be used as broodstock in the event

Gorgonians play a fundamental role in the deep sea (below 200 m depth), composing three-dimensional habitats that are characterized by a high associated biodiversity and playing an important part in biogeochemical cycles. Here we describe the use of a benthic lander to monitoring polyps activity, used as a proxy of gorgonian feeding activity of three colonies of Placogorgia sp. Images cover a period of 22 days with a temporal resolution of 30 min. In addition, this seafloor observatory is instrumented with oceanographic sensors that allows continuous monitoring of the hydrographic conditions in the site. Deep-learning is used for automatic detection of the state of the polyps registered in the images. More than 1000 images of 3 large specimens of gorgonians are analyzed, annotating polyps as extended or retracted, using the semantic segmentation algorithm ConvNeXt. The segmentation results are used to describe the feeding patterns of this species. Placogorgia sp. shows a daily pattern of feeding conduct, depending on the hours of day and night. Using a Singular Spectrum Analysis approach, feeding activity is related to currents dynamics and Acoustic Doppler Current Profile (ADCP) return signal intensity, as proxy of suspended matter, achieving a linear correlation of 0.35 and 0.11 respectively. This is the first time that the behavior of the Placogorgia polyps, directly related to their feeding process, is described.

In developing a holistic and innovative approach to determining the carrying capacity in marine finfish aquaculture, we carried out a modified Delphi exercise in which we asked industry experts to identify the factors influencing the production levels of the activity under different scenarios. We disseminated and discussed three rounds of questionnaires in sectoral roundtables and workshops with experts, culminating in the development of a simple formula that adapts production levels to the physical, ecological, social and economic conditions of the activity on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. We used this formula to approach the carrying capacity of the system. Based on the developed model and its theoretical application, we estimated the carrying capacity for floating cages on the Spanish Mediterranean coast at 117,162 t—about 1.5 times the current granted production level of 79,440 t. We therefore concluded that, subject to the execution of an in-situ validation of the model, the production level of floating nurseries on the Spanish Mediterranean coast could be increased by up to 47.5%.

Despite the general belief that the Southern Ocean harbors low fish biodiversity, the Weddell Sea hosts one of the richest fish communities in the region. Parallelly, the Weddell Sea is also known for the presence of dense and diverse macrobenthos. Most macrobenthic invertebrates, such as gorgonians, sponges and bryozoans, are considered ecosystem engineers as they generate a three-dimensional structure that increases habitat heterogeneity. This structural complexity serves as a refuge against predators as well as a nursery ground for many organisms, including fish species. By analyzing video transects recorded by a Remotely Operated Vehicle, we investigated density, spatial distribution and size-frequency of populations of the demersal fish species inhabiting macrobenthic communities in the southernmost part of the Weddell Sea. We also attempted to unveil whether there is any relationship between benthic and fish communities and substrate, as well as some fish behavioral patterns. The dominance of juveniles in the surveyed fish assemblages provides evidence that, at this life stage, some fish species appear to be positively associated with complex benthic communities conformed by bryozoans, sponges and gorgonians which are more common in sand matrix with sparse rocks substrates. Moreover, about 37% of all specimens recorded were resting on benthic invertebrates or were using them to hide, implying that Antarctic benthic communities might offer suitable habitat. As such, it can be concluded that there was an apparent relationship between certain species of fish and the different benthic communities, yet the exact triggers and/or factors behind such an association remain partially elusive

Recreational spearfishing is a fishing method that occurs globally, yet receives considerably less attention in the scientific literature relative to other recreational fishing methods, such as angling. Lack of scientific information on spearfishing may negatively affect the development and management of marine recreational fisheries. We conducted a systematic review of 102 peer-reviewed papers published between 1967 and 2022 pertaining to marine recreational spearfishing. Based on this literature review, we provide an overview of key insights across social, economic, and ecological dimensions of marine recreational spearfishing. While spearfishers represent less than 5% of marine recreational fishers, the participants are younger and may differ from recreational anglers in their motivations, with suggestions of increased well-being generated from a close connection with the sea during underwater fishing. Recreational spearfishers mostly target species of moderate to high levels of vulnerability that are mid to high trophic level carnivores. Though spearfishers can deliberately target larger individuals of exploited populations, this is not a generalizable pattern. Despite a growing body of research on the ecological impacts of marine recreational spearfishing, there is limited knowledge of these effects and their mechanisms across biological levels of organization (e.g., individual, population, community and ecosystem) compared with those of other fishing methods. Recreational spearfishers can contribute to advances in marine ecological knowledge, and inclusive participatory management could represent a key step towards transformative sustainable development of marine recreational spearfishing. Throughout the review, we identify gaps in the research and areas where future research is needed to better inform the socio-economic importance, ecosystem impacts and future management of marine recreational spearfishing

The Mar Menor is a hypersaline coastal lagoon representing one of the most iconic natural areas in Southeastern Spain. However, it has suffered several catastrophic environmental events causing an exceptional eutrophication status. A study was performed to assess the recruitment of oysters in the Mar Menor, determine their taxonomic allocation and evaluate functionality in filtration and growth A total of 45 spat collectors were installed in June 2020 and posteriorly retrieved in October 2020. In total, 3431 oyster recruits were counted. Two species of oyster Ostrea edulis and O. stentina, inhabit the Mar Menor, but they are indistinguishable at the morphological level when they are small. Thus, a genetic tool was developed to identify both species. From a total of 90 oyster recruits, 95% of them corresponded to O. stentina. Finally, growth rate and clearance measurements were conducted on 661 oysters over 6 months under laboratory conditions to explore their possible use in the bioremediation of the lagoon.

On 15 March 2021, a male Hexanchus griseus was incidentally captured by a commercial bottom trawler at 550-730 m depth in the Gulf of Valencia (Spain). The specimen measured 251.8 cm in total length, weighed 86.2 kg and its reproductive system was fully developed, characterizing it as the smallest mature male bluntnose sixgill shark recorded in the Mediterranean Sea. The specimen hosted the ectoparasitic copepod Demoleus heptapus. Remains of a Stenella coeruleoalba calf were identified in its stomach content by applying molecular methods. The feeding behaviour of H. griseus as either actively preying on live cetaceans or as scavenging on carcasses is reviewed and discussed to better understand the species’ role in marine food webs

One of the most relevant information gaps in worldwide fisheries is related to the origin and consequences of the gender gap. Recreational fisheries show a remarkable gender gap, which has been especially poorly addressed in the scientific literature. In 2021, the Spanish Working Group on Marine Recreational Fishing (MRF) developed a broad diagnosis on the participation of women in MRF and agreed on a roadmap to address negative impacts derived from the gender gap. The network experts concluded that there is an urgent need to include the gender gap in the agendas of scientists, fishery managers, policy-makers, stakeholder organizations, and civil society. There is a need to better understand the gender-related socio-ecological impacts of MRF to improve fisheries governance and to develop policies and initiatives that facilitate the full access of women to the benefits derived from the practice of MRF. Establishing economic incentives, increasing the visibility of female success references, developing fishing-related programs specifically designed for girls, and promoting the perception of MRF as a family leisure activity in contact with nature will increase women’s engagement.

River discharge has experienced diverse changes in the last decades due to modification of hydrological patterns, anthropogenic intervention, re-vegetation or annual and interannual climatic and atmospheric fluctuations. Assessing the recent changes in river discharge and understanding the main drivers of these changes is thus extremely important from theoretical and applied points of view. More specifically, here we want to draw attention toward the impacts of streamflow changes on reservoir storage and operation. We describe the hydrological dynamics of the Yesa reservoir draining catchment, located in the central Spanish Pyrenees, and characterize the reservoir operation modes over the last 60 years (1956–2020). We analyze concurrent climatic (precipitation, air temperature, drought index), atmospheric mechanisms, land cover (Normalized Different Vegetation Index) and discharge (inlet and outlet of Yesa reservoir) time-series. By using the wavelet transform methodology, we detect historical breakpoints in the hydrological dynamics at different time-scales. Distinctive periods are thus identified. More regular seasonal flows characterized the catchment's dynamics during the first decades of the study period, while the last decades were characterized by a high inter-annual variability. These changes are primarily attributed to the natural re-vegetation process that the catchment experienced. Furthermore, we related changes in atmospheric circulation with a decline of the long-term discharge temporal features. This research contributes to the understanding of long-term river discharge changes and helps to improve the reservoir management practices.

[EN] In Europe, many bird populations have undergone strong declines over the last decades. The European Turtle Dove is an iconic declining bird species that can be legally hunted in ten EU countries, with hundreds of thousands of birds being harvested annually in western Europe alone. The European Union urgently required from these member states to tackle illegal and legal unsustainable hunting to support migratory bird conservation (BirdLife International in European red list of birds. Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, Luxembourg. http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22690419/1, 2021), and to consider that a careful regulation of harvest for declining hunted species should be the norm. In this study, we investigated turtle dove population dynamics in the western European flyway. The objective was to assess the current population growth rate, the relative importance of survival, and fecundity in determining prospective turtle dove population change, and to quantify the current level of harvest at the western flyway scale. We developed a population model including recent estimates of vital rates obtained from the core of the breeding distribution in the western flyway. The outputs of the model reproduced the declining trend of the European Turtle Dove and identified a predominant role of survival on prospective population dynamics, implying a potential positive effect of hunting regulation on population growth. Our results support the idea that actions increasing survival, among which hunting regulation, may be an important leverage for population management in this species. This study represents a major step towards a thoughtful adaptive management approach of the turtle dove population, and could be used as a template for other declining hunted bird species., [DE] In Europa haben viele Vogelpopulationen in den letzten Jahrzehnten einen starken Rückgang erfahren. Die Europäische Union forderte die betreffenden zehn Mitgliedstaaten dringend auf, die illegale und auch legale, aber nicht nachhaltige, Jagd zum Schutz der Zugvögel zu unterbinden (BirdLife International 2021) und darüber nachzudenken, dass eine schonende Regulierung der Jagd für solche vom Aussterben bedrohte Arten zur Norm erhoben weden sollte. In dieser Studie untersuchten wir die Populationsdynamik von Turteltauben auf ihrer westeuropäischen Zugroute. Ziel war es, die derzeitige Wachstumsrate der Population, die relative Bedeutung von Überleben und Fruchtbarkeit bei der Bestimmung der voraussichtlichen Populationsveränderung der Turteltaube zu bewerten und das derzeitige Ausmaß ihrer Bejagung auf der westlichen Zugroute zu quantifizieren. Wir entwickelten ein Populationsmodell mit aktuellen Schätzungen der Vitalitätsraten aufgrund von Daten aus den Haupt-Brutgebieten auf der westlichen Zugroute. Die Ergebnisse des Modells bestätigten den rückläufigen Trend bei der Europäischen Turteltaube und ergaben, dass die Überlebensrate bei der zukünftigen Populationsdynamik eine vorherrschende Rolle spielt, was eine potenziell positive Auswirkung der Regulierung der Bejagung auf das Populationswachstum nahelegt. Unsere Ergebnisse unterstützen die Annahme, dass Maßnahmen zur Erhöhung der Überlebensrate, darunter die Regulierung der Jagd, ein wichtiger Ausgangspunkt für das Bestandsmanagement bei dieser Art sein können. Die Studie stellt einen wichtigen Schritt in Richtung eines wohlüberlegten, angepassten Managementansatzes für die Turteltaubenpopulation dar und könnte als Modell für andere rückläufige, bejagte Vogelarten dienen.

As the number of introduced species keeps increasing unabatedly, identifying and prioritising current and potential Invasive Alien Species (IAS) has become essential to manage them. Horizon Scanning (HS), defined as an exploration of potential threats, is considered a fundamental component of IAS management. By combining scientific knowledge on taxa with expert opinion, we identified the most relevant aquatic IAS in the Iberian Peninsula, i.e., those with the greatest geographic extent (or probability of introduction), severe ecological, economic and human health impacts, greatest difficulty and acceptability of management. We highlighted the 126 most relevant IAS already present in Iberian inland waters (i.e., Concern list) and 89 with a high probability of being introduced in the near future (i.e., Alert list), of which 24 and 10 IAS, respectively, were considered as a management priority after receiving the highest scores in the expert assessment (i.e., top-ranked IAS). In both lists, aquatic IAS belonging to the four thematic groups (plants, freshwater invertebrates, estuarine invertebrates, and vertebrates) were identified as having been introduced through various pathways from different regions of the world and classified according to their main functional feeding groups. Also, the latest update of the list of IAS of Union concern pursuant to Regulation (EU) No 1143/2014 includes only 12 top-ranked IAS identified for the Iberian Peninsula, while the national lists incorporate the vast majority of them. This fact underlines the great importance of taxa prioritisation exercises at biogeographical scales as a step prior to risk analyses and their inclusion in national lists. Shark populations have suffered dramatic declines across the world as a result of overfishing. Marine protected areas (MPAs) can help restore overfished populations; however, their effectiveness largely relies on understanding the ecology of the targeted species. This study investigated the spatial ecology of the intensely harvested but understudied small spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) through acoustic telemetry in the Cíes Islands, a small MPA in the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. There were significant effects of diel, seasonal cycles, biotic (sex and total length) and abiotic (bottom sea temperature) variables on the spatial behaviour of S. canicula. The mean residency index was low (0.27) and movement patterns suggested a strong connection with inshore waters. While the probability of presence in the study area was mainly driven by sex (i.e. greater for females), a drastic increase in activity was observed at night (compared with daytime hours). The activity space decreased with larger body sizes. Warmer waters were related to higher activity levels and larger activity spaces. This study provides essential knowledge of the spatial behaviour of S. canicula, with significant implications for the conservation and management of this species. The results indicate that small MPAs may fail to protect the whole range of movements of S. canicula, but suggest a larger protection potential for females. To be effective for S. canicula conservation, MPAs should be appropriately sized and designed for the ranging behaviour of the target species in order to provide total protection. Temporal restrictions on fishing at night mirroring the peak activity pattern of S. canicula could be implemented to limit the probability of its capture

[EN] Recent climate change is one of the main threats to the sustainability of human societies. The reports of the IPCC, the Paris Agreement or the United Nations Conferences on climate change attest to the global political interest in urgently taking action to mitigate climate change. Mitigation efforts, however, are not enough to minimize the negative consequences of climate change. It is necessary, in parallel to the mitigation measures, to develop adaptation strategies that make it possible to minimize the risks that climate change poses to societies. With a necessarily local focus, the development of adaptation strategies must be based on an assessment of the vulnerability of society as a whole or of sectors of it to the expected consequences of climate change. This volume explores options for adaptation to climate change in relation to the management of water resources in an important transboundary region such as the Pyrenees mountain range. Cependant, les efforts d'atténuation ne suffisent pas à minimiser les conséquences négatives du changement climatique. Il est nécessaire, parallèlement aux mesures d'atténuation, de développer des stratégies d'adaptation qui permettent de minimiser les risques que le changement climatique fait peser sur les sociétés. Dans une optique nécessairement locale, l'élaboration de stratégies d'adaptation doit reposer sur une évaluation de la vulnérabilité de la société dans son ensemble ou de secteurs de celle-ci aux conséquences attendues du changement climatique. Ce volume explore les options d'adaptation au changement climatique en relation avec la gestion des ressources en eau dans une région transfrontalière importante telle que la chaîne de montagnes des Pyrénées. Introduction: Chondrichthyans (sharks, batoids and chimaeras) play key roles in the regulation of marine food webs dynamics. However, more than half of the assessed species in the Mediterranean are threatened, primarily by fishing pressure and compounded by habitat degradation and climate change. Nevertheless, there is an important knowledge gap in identifying the underlying drivers of their community structure and spatial distribution. Methods and Results: We provide insights into the current bycatch rates of chondrichthyans in the western Mediterranean commercial bottom trawling fishery by accurately depicting the unaltered practices of the local fleet. A total of 17 species were recorded in the studied fishing grounds (ranging from 50 to 800 m deep), including 7 sharks, 9 batoids, and 1 chimaera, although the total catch was dominated by few species. Furthermore, we tested the effect of environmental and fishing-related factors on multiple community descriptors by using analysis of community structure (multidimensional scaling and analysis of similitude) and generalized linear mixed models to further understand the drivers of the chondrichthyan community distribution and structure. This study revealed the importance of combining environmental and anthropogenic drivers to further understand the spatial distribution patterns of chondrichthyan communities. Our results indicate that depth was the main driver of the community structure, with deeper areas within the fishing grounds hosting a higher diversity. Sea bottom temperature and substrate type also influenced the distribution of the community, with substrate effects changing depending on the intensity of fishing pressure. In all cases, density, biomass, and diversity of chondrichthyans were negatively impacted by increasing fishing effort. Although Astrospartus mediterraneus (Risso, 1826) is an emblematic Mediterranean species, limited information is currently available, as it has not received much attention from the marine scientific community to date. In this context, an unusually high abundance of this basket star was observed in 2018 as part of the by-catch of local artisanal fishers in the Cap de Creus area (NW Mediterranean Sea). Indeed, fishers reported that this species had increased in abundance and expanded its distribution in recent years, ultimately interfering with their fishing activity. As such, this study aimed to elucidate the abundance, distribution, size, and structure of A. mediterraneus populations, as well as to evaluate the potential impact this species has on artisanal fisheries’ performance in the study area. To such aim, this work benefited from the Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) of the fishers, by-catch analyses of regular fishing events and video transects recorded employing Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV). Results show that A. mediterraneus has a specific distribution in the study area, mainly driven by habitat requirements. High abundances of the basket star were associated with rocky substrates with the presence of gorgonians, located between 50 and 80 m depth and preferentially occurring on sloping areas. Despite the lack of long-time monitoring data, A. mediterraneus' aggregations recorded in the studied area are the densest ones so far reported for the whole Mediterranean Sea with peak values of 18 ind. m−2 and a mean density of 0.45 ind. m−2 ± 0.71 ind. m−2. Additionally, the average size of their central disks (2.67 ± 0.97 cm), suggests that this is rather young population, which could be possibly linked with the beginning of a massive outbreak, which would be in accordance with the fishers’ own experiences, as it seems apparent that the species has been on the rise in recent years. At the end of the 20th century, the common vole (Microtus arvalis) colonized the practical totality of agricultural ecosystems in the northern sub-plateau of the Iberian Peninsula. To prevent crop damage, chemical control campaigns using anticoagulant rodenticides have been employed. This approach has a high environmental impact, and it has been banned in most countries in the European Union, including Spain. It is therefore essential to analyze alternative methods with lower environmental impacts. Here we explored the efficacy of biological control by avian predators to reduce vole abundance by providing nest-boxes in croplands. We used an indirect index based on the presence/absence of vole activity signs to measure the effect of nest-boxes on common vole abundance. We found that vole abundance was significantly lower near occupied nest-boxes at distances less than 180 m, where vole abundance increases progressively with increasing distance to the nearest nest-box. We also observed that the predatory pressure negatively affects the vole abundance at the end of the breeding period, considering the total number of fledglings. However, the effect of nest-boxes was highly variable depending on the study area and more limited in alfalfa fields, the optimal habitat for voles in agrarian ecosystems. Thus, nest-box supplementation would be a feasible measure for the biological control of the common vole in Mediterranean ecosystems, but it needs improvements for vole control in alfalfa fields within an integrated pest control program. We provide several recommendations to improve the performance of biological control in alfalfa fields.

The concept of ecosystem services has become increasingly important in understanding the interactions between humans and nature and the associated implications in terms of human well-being. Despite growing interest in ecosystem services research, knowledge of their ecological underpinnings and their integration with socioeconomic and management components remains limited. In this study, we propose a multi-layered network approach to assess the connection between ecological components, ecosystem functions and societal uses and benefits, management actions, and global change impacts in four Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Spain. An interaction matrix between all relevant components in the MPAs was built based on scientific knowledge, published records, and validated in stakeholder workshops. Then, we applied network analysis to explore the emergent properties of the network of connected elements in the MPAs. For example, habitat foundation species, such as kelp or seagrasses, were central to the networks and concentrated most connections with other ecological, social, and management components. The positive-negative index showed that human activities often had negative indices, ecological components had positive indices, and management, mitigation action, and infrastructure had variable effects across MPAs. Betweenness identified the foundation species or the scientific community as playing a key role in facilitating connections across the network in MPAs. This research provides valuable insights into the complex interactions between ecosystems, human activities, ecosystem functions and services, and management opportunities for coastal MPAs, with important consequences for the local management of the areas.

This paper explains the current seafloor morphology and processes that affect the formation and evolution of three mud volcanoes and one mud volcano/mud diapir complex in the deepest sector of the Spanish margin of the Gulf of Cádiz. The present study provides novel results and interpretations based on an extensive multidisciplinary data set. New high resolution bathymetric and backscatter data from multibeam echosounders enabled a detailed geomorphological analysis aimed at identifying diverse seafloor features in the different edifices studied and their adjacent bottoms. These features are mainly related to fluid escape (e.g., mud volcanoes, mud flows and depressions), gravitational (e.g., slide deposits and scars), and tectonic (e.g., faults and uplifted antiforms) processes. Very high-resolution parametric profiles and single channel seismic reflection profiles were interpreted for further analysis of the internal structures, demonstrating their important interplay with diapiric processes. Box-corer and gravity-corer have been used to identify different sediment types that have been correlated with backscatter values. The dominant benthic species associated with fluid venting and also with different types of substrates (hard and soft) were characterized using submarine images obtained with an underwater camera deep-towed sled. The benthic species observed were contrasted, and added to those collected with beam trawl and box-corer for characterisation of the benthic and demersal communities. Different geological and biological indicators have been used as proxies of the interaction of these features with the geological processes (such as fluid-escape-related, gravitational, or structural) to characterise the environmental conditions that determine the geomorphology, substrates, habitats and their associated biota. Marine protected areas (MPAs) are widely used tools for conservation and management. Their correct delimitation is challenging, especially when the target species are small, elusive and inconspicuous, as little data are generally available to adequately assess their distribution at sea. Therefore, currently designated MPAs may not effectively cover key areas for small seabirds, particularly during migration and wintering seasons. We used ensemble species distribution models (ESDMs) on a 15-year time-series data set of at-sea census along the Atlantic Iberian arc to predict the potential distribution of the smallest European seabird, the European storm-petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus), and compare it with official marine special protection areas (SPAs). Occurrence of European storm-petrel was related to shifts in sea surface temperature, and to small distances from the coast over the continental shelf. Most relevant area for the species in the Atlantic Iberian arc was west-central Portugal to north-western coast of the Iberian Peninsula, with an additional key area in the Gulf of Cádiz. Both zones host significant SPAs, but they inadequately cover key areas for European storm-petrels. Our findings support extending marine SPAs in the Atlantic Iberian arc to ensure their effective protection. The distribution of the species expands over the years, varying in both size and location. These changes might be attributed to dynamic oceanographic variables, such as sea surface temperature and biomass of micronekton, which seem to play a significant role in their foraging behaviour. Different leaf (evergreen vs. deciduous habit) and xylem (diffuse-vs. ring-porous wood) traits represent contrasting strategies to face seasonal changes in water availability and temperature. However, how contrasting leaf and xylem habits of coexisting tree species affect stem wood formation and tree-ring development remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the spatio-temporal patterns of wood formation in two deciduous oaks (Quercus faginea and Quercus petraea) and two evergreen oaks (Quercus ilex and Quercus suber) coexisting in seasonally dry Mediterranean forests along an aridity gradient in Spain. We hypothesized that growth responses to drought and intra- and inter-annual growth patterns would differ between functional groups. We simulated intra- and inter-annual growth using a modified version of the Vaganov-Shashkin (VS) process-based, growth model. The VS model simulations were used to estimate growth changes under a high emission scenario (RCP 8.5) for the current distribution of the study oak species and to forecast their future performance under warm (4.8 ​°C) conditions in the Iberian Peninsula. Our simulations indicate that climate warming would induce a shortening of the ring-growth season and a reduction of radial growth in evergreen and deciduous Mediterranean oaks, particularly in dry sites from southern and eastern Iberia currently occupied by Q. ilex and Q. faginea. Evergreen oaks may better recover after dry periods than deciduous oaks by resuming growth after the summer drought. Low soil water availability in spring would be more detrimental to growth of deciduous oaks. Process-based growth models should be refined and validated to better forecast changes in tree growth as a function of climate.

The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, once formed extensive reef habitats throughout European seas and estuaries. These reefs are now largely functionally extinct, yet interest and support for their restoration is rapidly growing. A major bottleneck to scaling up oyster reef restoration is the lack of available oysters to supply the growing demand. This study aimed to identify the ten questions which, if answered, would increase the consistency and success in hatchery production of O. edulis for habitat restoration. Candidate questions were submitted by representatives from twelve commercial and research hatcheries across Europe. The list of 98 candidate questions were collaboratively discussed by experts from nine research hatcheries across eight countries in Europe, to identify the top ten questions via an iterative and open process. Questions were grouped into the following themes: Conditioning and feeding, larval rearing, disease and water quality, hatchery protocol, genetics, and hatchery management. There were several overarching topics spanning these themes, including diet optimisation, maximising the effective population size, and developing the technical skillbase in order to increase hatchery production to meet the projected increase in demand for oyster seed for habitat restoration efforts. We anticipate this list will provide a starting point for collaborative research efforts across Europe, as well as assisting policy makers and funders in identifying key knowledge gaps.

[EN] The conservation of wildlife is one of the most pressing issues in the current times, but wildlife conservation economic values have often been largely ignored due to an absence of market prices, as setting an economic value on biodiversity or whole ecosystems can be challenging. Nevertheless, valuing wildlife can be of great significance to improve decision-making in the conservation field, as it can provide a complementary perspective based on economic principles. Whale-watching provides an opportunity for the economic valuation of wildlife. Specifically, it offers a framework in which the economic revenue allows the economic valuation of the targeted cetaceans to be estimated through the direct and indirect expenditure of the tourists who purchase whale-watching tours. Here, we performed an economic analysis based on population abundances of the three main species targeted by the whale-watching companies in the Strait of Gibraltar (Spain): long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas), common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and killer whales (Orcinus orca). These species generated a total annual income of €4,089,056, €1,876,833, and €505,389, respectively, and each individual would generate an average of €14,048, €951, and €36,099 each year, respectively. Incorporating life expectancy, this corresponded to a total population value of €112,426,185, €16,685,147, and €19,171,107, respectively, over their lifetime. These values provide an idea of the potential contribution of cetaceans to the local economy but only represent their non-consumptive value based on tourism. Our results reinforce the idea that a sustainable, high-quality whale-watching culture, under ACCOBAMS High-Quality Whale-Watching requirements, should be promoted to ensure a sustainable industry, stable economic income and the viability of cetacean populations in the Strait of Gibraltar, [ES] La conservación de la vida salvaje es uno de los retos clave del mundo actual. En este estudio, realizamos un análisis económico basado en las abundancias poblacionales de las tres principales especies objetivo de las compañías de avistamiento de cetáceos en el Estrecho de Gibraltar (España): calderones comunes (Globicephala melas), delfines comunes (Delphinus delphis) y orcas (Orcinus orca). Estas especies generaron respectivamente un ingreso total anual de 4.089.056 €, 1.876.833 € y 505.389 €, donde cada individuo generaría un promedio de 14.048 €, 951 € y 36.099€ cada año.
