What drives the liking of video advertisements? The authors analyzed neural signals during ad exposure from three functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data sets (113 participants from two countries watching 85 video ads) with automated meta-analytic decoding (Neurosynth). These brain-based measures of psychological processes—including perception and language (information processing), executive function and memory (cognitive functions), and social cognition and emotion (social-affective response)—predicted subsequent self-report ad liking, with emotion and memory being the earliest predictors after the first three seconds. Over the span of ad exposure, while the predictiveness of emotion peaked early and fell, that of social cognition had a peak-and-stable pattern, followed by a late peak of predictiveness in perception and executive function. At the aggregate level, neural signals—especially those associated with social-affective response—improved the prediction of out-of-sample ad liking compared with traditional anatomically based neuroimaging analysis and self-report liking. Finally, early-onset social-affective response predicted population ad liking in a behavioral replication. Overall, this study helps delineate the psychological mechanisms underlying ad processing and ad liking and proposes a novel neuroscience-based approach for generating psychological insights and improving out-of-sample predictions. Adolescence is characterized by dynamic neurodevelopment, which poses opportunities for risk and resilience. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) confer additional risk to the developing brain, where ACEs have been associated with alterations in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) BOLD signaling in brain regions underlying inhibitory control. Socioenvironmental factors like the family environment may amplify or buffer against the neurodevelopmental risks associated with ACEs. Using baseline to Year 2 follow-up data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, the current study examined how ACEs relate to fMRI BOLD signaling during successful inhibition on the Stop Signal Task in regions associated with inhibitory control and examined whether family conflict levels moderated that relationship. Results showed that greater ACEs were associated with reduced BOLD response in the right opercular region of the inferior frontal gyrus and bilaterally in the pre-supplementary motor area, which are key regions underlying inhibitory control. Further, greater BOLD response was correlated with less impulsivity behaviorally, suggesting reduced activation may not be behaviorally adaptive at this age. No significant two or three-way interactions with family conflict levels or time were found. As consumers are exposed to thousands of advertisements daily, researchers have sought to understand what makes people remember certain brands better than they remember others. Metaphors like Carvana's vending machines and taglines like "Red Bull gives you wings" have increasingly become a powerful way for marketers to communicate brand attributes. In this study, we sought to characterize the memorability of ads across three distinct categories (functional, emotional, and metaphorical) using behavioral and neuroimaging methods. Participants were exposed to 20 ads from each of these categories and underwent a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan while trying to recall details from these ads one week later. We found a significant effect of category on brand recall immediately after exposure and memory recognition for snippets from the ad a week later, with metaphorical and emotional ads outperforming functional ads. Insights from activation in key memory regions like the bilateral hippocampus during retrieval revealed that while people were likely to remember the salient aspects of emotional ads and rate them as highly vivid, they were weaker in recalling additional central details about the brands featured in them relative to metaphorical ads. LITT is a minimally-invasive laser ablation technique used to treat a wide variety of intracranial lesions. Difficulties performing intraoperative mapping have limited its adoption for lesions in/near eloquent regions. In this institutional case series, we demonstrate the utility of fMRI-adjunct planning for LITT near language or motor areas. Six out of 7 patients proceeded with LITT after fMRI-based tractography determined adequate safety margins for ablation. All underwent successful ablation without new or worsening postoperative symptoms requiring adjuvant corticosteroids, including those with preexisting deficits. fMRI is an easily accessible adjunct which may potentially reduce chances of complications in LITT near eloquent structures.

Functional neuroimaging emerged with great promise and has provided fundamental insights into the neurobiology of schizophrenia. However, it has faced challenges and criticisms, most notably a lack of clinical translation. This paper provides a comprehensive review and critical summary of the literature on functional neuroimaging, in particular functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), in schizophrenia. We begin by reviewing research on fMRI biomarkers in schizophrenia and the clinical high risk phase through a historical lens, moving from case-control regional brain activation to global connectivity and advanced analytical approaches, and more recent machine learning algorithms to identify predictive neuroimaging features. Findings from fMRI studies of negative symptoms as well as of neurocognitive and social cognitive deficits are then reviewed. Functional neural markers of these symptoms and deficits may represent promising treatment targets in schizophrenia. Next, we summarize fMRI research related to antipsychotic medication, psychotherapy and psychosocial interventions, and neurostimulation, including treatment response and resistance, therapeutic mechanisms, and treatment targeting. We also review the utility of fMRI and data-driven approaches to dissect the heterogeneity of schizophrenia, moving beyond case-control comparisons, as well as methodological considerations and advances, including consortia and precision fMRI. Lastly, limitations and future directions of research in the field are discussed. Our comprehensive review suggests that, in order for fMRI to be clinically useful in the care of patients with schizophrenia, research should address potentially actionable clinical decisions that are routine in schizophrenia treatment, such as which antipsychotic should be prescribed or whether a given patient is likely to have persistent functional impairment. The potential clinical utility of fMRI is influenced by and must be weighed against cost and accessibility factors. Future evaluations of the utility of fMRI in prognostic and treatment response studies may consider including a health economics analysis.

Background: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) impairs hippocampal microglial efferocytosis, causing cognitive deficits. Previous research found that milk fat globule epidermal growth factor 8 protein (MFGE8) stimulates efferocytosis, reducing hippocampal inflammation in SAE rats. In this study, we explore MFGE8's role in alleviating cognitive impairment and its impact on neural activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods: Sixty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups: Sham, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), CLP+MFGE8, and CLP+MFGE8+CGT (Cilengitide). After CLP, CLP+MFGE8 rats received intracerebroventricular MFGE8 (3.3 µg), while CLP+MFGE8+CGT rats received intraperitoneal Cilengitide (10 mg/kg). We assessed cognitive function with the Morris water maze and open field test over five days. Eight days post-surgery, rats underwent T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and resting state (rs)-fMRI scans. Brain tissues were collected for western blot, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and immunofluorescence. Statistical analysis employed one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post-test for multiple comparisons. Results: MFGE8 improved neurobehavioral performance in open field task (OFT) and morris water maze (MWM) tests. fMRI indicated a significant reduction in abnormal neural activity in the right hippocampal CA1, CA3, and dentate gyrus of SAE rats following MFGE8 treatment. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis revealed decreased high-signal areas in the hippocampus, along with reduced hippocampal volume due to alleviated neural edema. Western blot analysis demonstrated that MFGE8 enhanced ras-related C3 botulinum toxin substrate 1 (Rac1) and microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3 (LC3) expression in the rat hippocampus, while CGT reduced these protein levels. Behavioral experiments and fMRI results confirmed that CGT reversed the cognitive effects of MFGE8 by inhibiting microglial αVβ3/αVβ5 integrin receptors. Conclusions: Our findings show that MFGE8 reduced amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) values in the right hippocampal CA1, CA3, and the dentate gyrus, mitigating abnormal neural activity and decreasing hippocampal volume. This led to an improvement in cognitive dysfunction in SAE rats. These results suggest that MFGE8 enhances microglial efferocytosis by activating αVβ3 and αVβ5 integrin receptors on microglial surfaces, ultimately improving cognitive function in SAE rats. Migraine is a common chronic neurological disorder that lacks objective imaging biomarkers, while resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) can be used to extract potential biomarkers. Recently, graph neural networks (GNNs) have gained significant popularity in the classification of brain disorders because of their powerful ability to model brains. Hypergraph neural networks (HGNNs), a branch of GNNs, are particularly effective in capturing high-order neighborhood information. In this paper, we proposed a hypergraph neural network model, incorporating hypergraph dual attention mechanism and hypergraph pooling strategy (APHGNN), for migraine classification derived from the preprocessed rs-fMRI data. First, we constructed hypergraphs from functional connectivity matrices based on the preprocessed rs-fMRI data. Then, we designed three network layers: in the hypergraph dual attention layer, we introduced attention mechanism in both the hyperedge feature aggregation phase and the node feature aggregation phase, making full use of both node and hyperedge information to update node features; in the hypergraph pooling layer, we employed a node selection-based pooling strategy to score and filter nodes, retaining key node features; in the readout layer, we calculated the average and maximum values of the key node features, concatenated and aggregated them, and used the resulting vectors for classification. The experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms other baseline methods in classification performance and exhibits good generalization. Additionally, the key brain regions extracted through the hypergraph pooling strategy can serve as potential biomarkers for migraine, providing valuable insights for migraine diagnosis. Parenting styles encompass negative and positive approaches, potentially affecting adolescents' brain reward and emotion regulation systems. However, the association between parenting style and brain networks remains unknown. This study investigates the link between parenting style and functional connectivity (FC) within the reward and emotion regulation brain networks, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). A total of forty-two middle-aged adolescents (26 males; 16 females) with no neurological or psychiatric symptoms participated in this study. We assessed parenting behaviors and extracted reward/emotion regulation FC from rs-fMRI. We examined the association between FC and parenting style, identified through principal component analysis. Correlation analysis investigated these links while controlling for sex. We delineated both positive (love-autonomy) and negative (hostility-control) parenting styles, accounting for 79 % of the explained variance in parenting behaviors. The negative parenting style displayed connections with FC within the reward system, particularly in the left nucleus accumbens (NAc), showcasing links to multiple frontal regions. Furthermore, it correlated with the social reward network, specifically the insula-NAc FC in bilateral hemispheres. Conversely, the positive parenting style exhibited an association with FC between the hippocampus and right lateral prefrontal cortex. Our findings support negative parenting's association with an immature reward system and suggest positive parenting's potential to enhance emotion regulation in brain function. These observations highlight two distinct parenting styles, including single-parenting behaviors. Although there are a few first-line treatment options for bipolar depression, none are rapid-acting. A new rTMS protocol, Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT®), has been shown to have a rapid antidepressant effect in major depressive disorder (MDD). We examined the preliminary safety, tolerability, and efficacy of SAINT for the treatment of depression in a small sample of persons with treatment-resistant bipolar I disorder. Participants with treatment-resistant bipolar I disorder currently experiencing moderate to severe depression were treated with open-label SAINT. Resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) was used to generate individualized treatment targets for each participant based on the region of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex most anticorrelated with the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex. Participants were treated with 10 iTBS sessions daily, with 50-min intersession intervals, for up to 5 consecutive days. The primary outcome was change in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) from baseline to immediate follow-up after treatment. We treated 10 participants and found a mean reduction of 16.9 in MADRS scores, with a 50 % response rate and 40 % remission rate immediately following treatment. 60 % of participants met remission criteria within the 1-month period following treatment. No serious adverse events, manic episodes, or cognitive side effects were observed. Our study has a limited sample size and larger samples are needed to confirm safety and efficacy. SAINT has shown preliminary feasibility, safety, tolerability, and efficacy in treating treatment-resistant bipolar I depression. Relatives of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) are at higher risk of developing the disorder. Identifying brain alterations associated with familial vulnerability in BD can help discover endophenotypes, which are quantifiable biological traits more prevalent in unaffected relatives of BD (BD-RELs) than the general population. This review aimed at expanding our knowledge on endophenotypes of BD by providing an overview of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) alterations in BD-RELs. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed to identify all available rs-fMRI studies conducted in BD-RELs up to January 2024. A total of 18 studies were selected. Six included BD-RELs with no history of psychiatric disorders and 10 included BD-RELs that presented psychiatric disorders. Two investigations examined rs-fMRI alterations in BD-RELs with and without subthreshold symptoms for BD. BD-RELs presented rs-fMRI alterations in the cortico-limbic network, fronto-thalamic-striatal circuit, fronto-occipital network, and, to a lesser extent, in the default mode network. This was true both for BD-RELs with no history of psychopathology and for BD-RELs that presented psychiatric disorders. The direct comparison of rs-fMRI alterations in BD-RELs with and without psychiatric symptoms displayed largely non-overlapping patterns of rs-fMRI abnormalities. Small sample sizes and the clinical heterogeneity of BD-RELs limit the generalizability of our findings. The current literature suggests that first-degree BD-RELs exhibit rs-fMRI alterations in brain circuits involved in emotion regulation, cognition, reward processing, and psychosis susceptibility. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a widespread mental health issue, impacting spatial and temporal aspects of brain activity. The neural mechanisms behind MDD remain unclear. To address this gap, we introduce a novel measure, spatiotemporal topology (SPT), capturing both the hierarchy and dynamic attributes of brain activity in depressive disorder patients. We analyzed fMRI data from 285 MDD inpatients and 141 healthy controls (HC). SPT was assessed by coupling brain gradient measurement and time delay estimation. A nested machine learning process distinguished between MDD and HC using SPT. Person's correlation tested the link between SPT's and symptom severity, and another machine learning method predicted the gap between patients' chronological and brain age. SPT demonstrated significant differences between patients and healthy controls (F = 2.944, p < 0.001). Machine learning approaches revealed SPT's ability to discriminate between patients and healthy controls (Accuracy = 0.65, Sensitivity = 0.67, Specificity = 0.64). Moreover, SPT correlated with the severity of depression symptom (r = 0.32. p FDR = 0.045) and predicted the gap between patients' chronological age and brain age (r = 0.756, p < 0.001). Evaluation of brain dynamics was constrained by MRI temporal resolution. Childhood trauma is closely tied to adult depression, but the neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear. Previous studies suggested associations between depression and large-scale brain networks such as the Ventral Attention Network (VAN) and Somatosensory Motor Network (SMN). This study hypothesized that functional connectivity (FC) within and between these networks mediates the link between childhood trauma and adult depression. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) assessed developmental experiences, and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) gauged depressive symptoms. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analyzed FC within and between the VAN and SMN. Depression group exhibited significantly higher HAMD and CTQ scores, as well as elevated FC within the VAN and between the VAN and SMN (P < 0.05). Positive correlations were found between HAMD total score and FC within the VAN (P < 0.05, r = 0.35) and between the VAN and SMN (P < 0.05, r = 0.34), as well as with CTQ total score (P < 0.05, r = 0.27). Positive correlations were also observed between CTQ total score and FC within the VAN (P < 0.05, r = 0.31) and between the VAN and SMN (P < 0.05, r = 0.29). In the mediation model, FC within and between the VAN and SMN significantly mediated childhood trauma and depression. The cross-sectional design limits causal inference. The sample size for different trauma types is relatively small, urging caution in generalizing findings. The study underscores the association between depression severity, VAN dysfunction, abnormal VAN-SMN FC, and childhood trauma. Abdominal acupuncture has definite efficacy for major depressive disorder (MDD). Our study examined how abdominal acupuncture regulates the integration within and between brain networks of MDD patients by neuroimaging and whether this functional integration can predict the efficacy. Forty-six female MDD patients were randomly divided into a fluoxetine + real acupuncture group (n = 22) and a fluoxetine + sham acupuncture group (n = 24). The differences in functional magnetic resonance imaging data in the intra- and inter-network functional connectivity (FC) of the default mode network (DMN), affective network (AN), salience network (SN), and cognitive control network (CCN) between the two groups were analyzed. The FCs in brain regions with the inter-group differences and support vector regression were used to predict the efficacy of abdominal acupuncture. Our results showed: that the intra- and inter-network FCs of DMN, AN, SN, and CCN could be changed by abdominal acupuncture. Using the baseline FCs within AN and DMN or AN–DMN as characteristics, combined with support vector regression, could better predict the efficacy of acupuncture. Our study suggests that abdominal acupuncture could treat MDD by regulating the integration of the functional networks DMN, AN, SN, and CCN. Mental time travel (MTT), a cornerstone of human cognition, enables individuals to mentally project themselves into their past or future. It was shown that this self-projection may extend beyond the temporal domain to the spatial and social domains. What about higher cognitive domains? Twenty-eight participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while self-projecting to different political, moral and temporal perspectives. For each domain, participants were asked to judge their relationship to various people (politicians, moral figures, personal acquaintances) from their actual or projected self-location. Findings showed slower, less accurate responses during self-projection across all domains. fMRI analysis revealed self-projection elicited brain activity at the precuneus, medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, temporoparietal junction and anterior insula, bilaterally and right lateral temporal cortex. Notably, 23.5% of active voxels responded to all three domains and 27% to two domains, suggesting a shared brain system for self-projection. For ordinality judgement (self-reference), 52.5% of active voxels corresponded to the temporal domain specifically. Self-projection activity overlapped mostly with the frontoparietal control network, followed by the default mode network, while self-reference showed a reversed pattern, demonstrating MTT's implication in spontaneous brain activity. MTT may thus be regarded as a 'mental-experiential travel', with self-projection as a domain-general construct and self-reference related mostly to time. Behavioral inhibition (BI), an early-life temperament characterized by vigilant responses to novelty, is a risk factor for anxiety disorders. In this study, we investigated whether differences in neonatal brain responses to infrequent auditory stimuli relate to children's BI at 1 year of age. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we collected blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) data from N = 45 full-term, sleeping neonates during an adapted auditory oddball paradigm and measured BI from n = 27 of these children 1 year later using an observational assessment. Whole-brain analyses corrected for multiple comparisons identified 46 neonatal brain regions producing novelty-evoked BOLD responses associated with children's BI scores at 1 year of age. More than half of these regions (n = 24, 52%) were in prefrontal cortex, falling primarily within regions of the default mode or frontoparietal networks or in ventromedial/orbitofrontal regions without network assignments. Hierarchical clustering of the regions based on their patterns of association with BI resulted in two groups with distinct anatomical, network, and response-timing profiles. The first group, located primarily in subcortical and temporal regions, tended to produce larger early oddball responses among infants with lower subsequent BI. The second group, located primarily in prefrontal cortex, produced larger early oddball responses among infants with higher subsequent BI. These results provide preliminary insights into brain regions engaged by novelty in infants that may relate to later BI. The findings may inform understanding of anxiety disorders and guide future research. Public Significance Statement: This study suggests that specific neural responses to novel sounds in the neonatal brain may be related to children's behavioral inhibition (BI), an early-life temperament characterized by increased vigilance to novelty, 1 year later. Neonatal brain areas producing these responses include regions of prefrontal cortex, temporal cortex, and subcortical structures including pons and amygdala. This study aims to elucidate the neuroimaging changes associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and their relationship with genetic characteristics. We conducted a global-brain functional connectivity (GFC) and genetic-neuroimaging correlation analysis on 42 MDD patients and 42 healthy controls (HCs), exploring the correlation between GFC abnormalities and clinical variables. Results showed that compared to HCs, MDD patients had significantly decreased GFC values in the bilateral posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus and increased GFC values in the left and right cerebellum Crus I/II. Additionally, a negative correlation was observed between the GFC values of the left cerebellum Crus I/II and subjective support scores, as well as social support revalued scale total scores. We identified genes associated with GFC changes in MDD, which are enriched in biological processes such as synaptic transmission and ion transport. Our findings indicate the presence of abnormal GFC values in severe depression, complementing the pathological research on the condition. Furthermore, this study provides preliminary evidence for the correlation between social support levels and brain functional connectivity, offering insights into the potential association between GFC changes and gene expression in MDD patients. Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative pathology that leads to cognitive decline and dementia, particularly in older adults. It disrupts brain structure and function, with neurotoxic amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques being a primary pathological hallmark. Pharmacotherapeutic trials targeting Aβ and other AD pathological features aim to slow disease progression. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive tool that visualizes brain functional activity, aiding in evaluating the efficacy of AD drugs in clinical trials. Objective: This mini-review explores the role of fMRI in evaluating the impact of AD pharmacotherapeutic clinical trials conducted in the past seven years. Methods: Literature was systematically searched using two databases. The risk of bias was assessed with the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (RoB-2) for randomized clinical trials (RCTs). Results: Four studies using fMRI to investigate AD drug efficacy were included. Cholinesterase, glutamatergic, and serotonergic drugs showed significant positive effects on brain functional activity, especially within the default mode network. Functional connectivity (FC) changes due to drug intake were linked to cerebellar and cholinergic decline in AD, correlating with improved global cognition and fMRI task performance. In the entorhinal cortex (EC), attempts have been made to identify the human homologue regions of the medial (MEC) and lateral (LEC) subregions using either functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). However, there are still discrepancies between entorhinal subdivisions depending on the choice of connectivity seed regions and the imaging modality used. While DTI can be used to follow the white matter tracts of the brain, fMRI can identify functionally connected brain regions. In this study, we used both DTI and resting‐state fMRI in 103 healthy adults to investigate both structural and functional connectivity between the EC and associated cortical brain regions. Differential connectivity with these regions was then used to predict the locations of the human homologues of MEC and LEC. Our results from combining DTI and fMRI support a subdivision into posteromedial (pmEC) and anterolateral (alEC) EC and reveal a confined border between the pmEC and alEC. Furthermore, the EC subregions obtained by either imaging modality showed similar distinct whole‐brain connectivity profiles. Optimizing the delineation of the human homologues of MEC and LEC with a combined, cross‐validated DTI‐fMRI approach allows to define a likely border between the two subdivisions and has implications for both cognitive and translational neuroscience research. Background: This study explores the compensatory neural mechanisms associated with congenital deafness through an examination of tactile discrimination abilities using high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Objective: To analyze the neural substrates underlying tactile processing in congenitally deaf individuals and compare them with hearing controls. Methods: Our participant pool included thirty-five congenitally deaf individuals and thirty-five hearing controls. All participants engaged in tactile discrimination tasks involving the identification of common objects by touch. We utilized an analytical suite comprising voxel-based statistics, functional connectivity multivariate/voxel pattern analysis (fc-MVPA), and seed-based connectivity analysis to examine neural activity. Results: Our findings revealed pronounced neural activity in congenitally deaf participants within regions typically associated with auditory processing, including the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, and right rolandic operculum. Additionally, unique activation and connectivity patterns were observed in the right insula and bilateral supramarginal gyrus, indicating a strategic reorganization of neural pathways for tactile information processing. Behaviorally, both groups demonstrated high accuracy in the tactile tasks, exceeding 90%. However, the deaf participants outperformed their hearing counterparts in reaction times, showcasing significantly enhanced efficiency in tactile information processing. Conclusion: These insights into the brain's adaptability to sensory loss through compensatory neural reorganization highlight the intricate mechanisms by which tactile discrimination is enhanced in the absence of auditory input. Using 3D T1-weighted structural data and movie watching functional magnetic resonance imaging data in a sample of 422 healthy individuals (ages from 18 to 87 years), we constructed regional structure–function coupling (SFC) of cortical and subcortical regions by quantifying the distribution similarity of gray matter volume (GMV) and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF). Further, we investigated age-related changes in SFC and its relationship with cognition. With aging, increased SFC localized in PFC, thalamus and caudate nucleus, decreased SFC in temporal cortex, lateral occipital cortex and putamen. Moreover, the SFC in the PFC was associated with executive function and thalamus was associated with the fluid intelligence, and partially mediated age-related cognitive decline. Collectively, our results highlight that tighter structure–function synchron of the PFC and thalamus might contribute to age-related cognitive decline, and provide insight into the substrate of the thalamo-prefrontal pathway with cognitive aging. Our study applied resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based support vector regression (SVR) to predict anhedonia in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FES) and analysed the correlation between the wavelet-based amplitude low-frequency fluctuation (wavelet-ALFF) of the main brain region and anhedonia. We recruited 31 patients with FES and 33 healthy controls (HCs) from the Affiliated Brain Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University. All subjects completed the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS) and received resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI). We used the wavelet-ALFF method and SVR to analyse the data. Patients with FES had lower consummatory pleasure scores than healthy subjects (t = -2.71, P <0.01). FES displays variable wavelet-ALFF in a wide range of cerebral cortices (P <0.05, GFR corrected). The SVR analysis showed that wavelet-ALFF, based primarily on the right putamen (r = 0.40, P <0.05) and right superior occipital gyrus (r = -0.39, P <0.05), was effective in predicting consummatory pleasure scores with an accuracy of 56.43 %. Our study shows that abnormal spontaneous neural activity in FES may be related to the state of consummatory anhedonia in FES. Understanding neuro-temporal relationships, i.e., functional connectivity, between olfactory eloquent structures in such disorders, could shed light on their basic pathophysiology. To this end, we employed region-based analyses using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) obtained from cognitively normal (CN), MCI, and PD patients with cognitive impairment (PD-CogImp). Using machine learning (linear and ensemble learning), we determined whether the identified functional patterns could classify abnormal function from normal function. Olfaction, as measured by objective testing, was found to be most strongly associated with diagnostic status, emphasizing the fundamental association of this primary sensory system with these conditions. Consistently lower functional connectivity was observed in the PD-CogImp cohort compared to the CN cohort among all identified brain regions. Differences were also found between PD-CogImp and MCI at the level of the orbitofrontal and cingulate cortices. MCI and CN subjects had different functional connectivity between the posterior orbitofrontal cortex and thalamus. Regardless of study group, males showed significantly higher connectivity than females in connections involving the orbitofrontal cortex. The logistic regression model trained using the top discriminatory features revealed that caudate was the most involved olfaction-related brain structure (accuracy = 0.88, Area under the Receiver operator characteristic curve of 0.90). In aggregate, our study demonstrates that resting functional connectivity among olfactory eloquent structures has potential value in better understanding the pathophysiology of several neurodegenerative diseases. We propose a new method of independent component analysis (ICA) in order to extract appropriate features from high-dimensional data. In general, matrix factorization methods including ICA have a problem regarding the interpretability of extracted features. For the improvement of interpretability, sparse constraint on a factorized matrix is helpful. With this background, we construct a new ICA method with sparsity. In our method, the ℓ 1 -regularization term is added to the cost function of ICA, and minimization of the cost function is performed by a difference of convex functions algorithm. Resting heart rate may confer risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other adverse cardiovascular events. While the brainstem's autonomic control over heart rate is well established, less is known about the regulatory role of higher level cortical and subcortical brain regions, especially in humans. This study sought to characterize the brain networks that predict variation in prevailing heart rate in otherwise healthy adults. We used machine learning approaches designed for complex, high‐dimensional data sets, to predict variation in instantaneous heart period (the inter‐heartbeat‐interval) from whole‐brain hemodynamic signals measured by fMRI. Task‐based and resting‐state fMRI, as well as peripheral physiological recordings, were taken from two data sets that included extensive repeated measurements within individuals. Our models reliably predicted instantaneous heart period from whole‐brain fMRI data both within and across individuals, with prediction accuracies being highest when measured within‐participants. We found that a network of cortical and subcortical brain regions, many linked to visceral motor and visceral sensory processes, were reliable predictors of variation in heart period. This adds to evidence on brain–heart interactions and constitutes an incremental step toward developing clinically applicable biomarkers of brain contributions to CVD risk. Few studies have considered the neural underpinnings of binge eating disorder (BED) in children, despite clinical and subclinical symptom presentation occurring in this age group. Symptom presentation at this age is of clinical relevance, as early onset of binge eating is linked to negative health outcomes. Studies in adults have highlighted dysfunction in the frontostriatal reward system as a potential candidate for binge eating pathophysiology, although the exact nature of such dysfunction is currently unclear. Data from 83 children (mean age 9.9 years, SD = 0.60) with symptoms of BED (57% girls) and 123 control participants (mean age 10.0 years, SD = 0.60) (52% girls) were acquired from the 4.0 baseline release of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Task-based graph theoretic techniques were used to analyze data from anticipation trials of the monetary incentive delay task. Network and nodal properties were compared between groups. The BED-S group showed alterations in topological properties associated with the frontostriatal subnetwork, such as reduced nodal efficiency in the superior frontal gyrus, nucleus accumbens, putamen, and in normal sex-difference patterns of these properties, such as diminished girls-greater-than-boys pattern of betweenness-centrality in nucleus accumbens observed in controls. Distinct network properties and sex-difference patterns in preadolescent children with BED-S suggest dysregulation in the reward system compared to those of matched controls. For the first time, these results quantify this dysregulation in terms of systems-level properties during anticipation of monetary reward and significantly inform the early and sex-related brain markers of BED symptoms. The intrinsic functional network architecture accounts for task-evoked brain activity changes and variabilities in cognitive performance. Relationships between the intrinsic functional network architecture and task performance or learning ability have been previously reported. However, the relationships between learning benefits and the characteristics of intrinsic functional network architecture for different types of learning methods remain unclear. In this study, we used graph theoretical analysis to examine the relationships between intrinsic functional network connectivity and learning benefits in two well-known learning methods in the field of cognitive rehabilitation—errorless learning (EL learning) and trial-and-error learning (T&E learning). We focused on the default mode network (DMN) as a task-relevant network, which can differentiate between EL and T&E learning and was found to be more important for T&E learning in a previous study. Participants performed a color–name association task with both learning methods. The graph metrics used were within-network connectivity and efficiency for the DMN. Within-DMN connectivity and DMN efficiency showed a significantly weak positive correlation with T&E scores but not with EL scores. Opioid use disorder is a chronic relapsing disorder. The brain adapts to opioids that are taken for pain treatment or recreational use so that abstinence becomes a true challenge for individuals with opioid use disorder. Studying brain dysfunction at this stage is difficult, and human neuroimaging has provided highly heterogeneous information. Here, we took advantage of an established mouse model of morphine abstinence together with functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) first at rest and then in response to an acute morphine challenge during image acquisition. Hierarchical clustering of seed pair correlation coefficients showed modified FC in abstinent animals, brainwide and regardless of the condition. Seed-to-voxel analysis and random forest classification, performed on data at rest, indicated that the retrosplenial cortex (a core component of the default mode network) and the amygdala (a major aversion center) are the best markers of abstinence, thus validating the translatability of the study. Seed pair network clustering confirmed disruption of a retrosplenial cortex–centered network, reflecting major reorganization of brain FC. The latter analysis also identified a persistent but unreported morphine signature in abstinent mice at rest, which involves cortical and midbrain components and characterizes the enduring morphine footprint. Finally, dynamic FC analysis revealed that the intrascanner acute morphine challenge modified FC faster and more broadly in abstinent animals, demonstrating brainwide adaptations of FC reactivity to an acute opioid challenge. This study used a unique experimental design to demonstrate that a prior history of chronic opioid exposure leaves a durable pharmacological signature on brain communication, with implications for pain management and recovery from opioid use disorder. Anti-contactin associated protein receptor 2 (CASPR2) encephalitis is a severe autoimmune encephalitis with a variable clinical phenotype including behavioral abnormalities, cognitive decline, epileptic seizures, peripheral nerve hyperexcitability and neuropathic pain. The detailed mechanisms of how CASPR2 autoantibodies lead to synaptic dysfunction and clinical symptoms are largely unknown. Aiming for analyses from the molecular to the clinical level, we isolated antibody-secreting cells from the cerebrospinal fluid of two patients with CASPR2 encephalitis. From these we cloned four anti-CASPR2 human monoclonal autoantibodies (mAbs) with strong binding to brain and peripheral nerves. All were highly hypermutated and mainly of the IgG4 subclass. Mutagenesis studies determined selective binding to the discoidin domain of CASPR2. Surface plasmon resonance revealed affinities with dissociation constants K D in the pico- to nanomolar range. CASPR2 mAbs interrupted the interaction of CASPR2 with its binding partner contactin 2 in vitro and were internalized after binding to CASPR2-expressing cells. Electrophysiological recordings of rat hippocampal slices after stereotactic injection of CASPR2 mAbs showed characteristic afterpotentials following electrical stimulation. In vivo experiments with intracerebroventricular administration of human CASPR2 mAbs into mice and rats showed EEG-recorded brain hyperexcitability but no spontaneous recurrent seizures. Behavioral assessment of infused mice showed a subtle clinical phenotype, mainly affecting sociability. Mouse brain MRI exhibited markedly reduced resting-state functional connectivity without short-term structural changes. Together, the experimental data support the direct pathogenicity of CASPR2 autoantibodies. Yet little is known about the neurobiological changes that confer depression or resilience to depression, that occur when episodes of heightened inflammation are frequent or span many years. We used an innovative combination of longitudinal resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging coupled to segmental bronchial provocation with allergen (SBP-Ag) to assess changes in resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the salience network (SN) caused by an acute inflammatory exacerbation in twenty-six adults (15 female) with asthma and varying levels of depressive symptoms. Eosinophils measured in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and blood provided an index of allergic inflammation and the Beck Depression Inventory provided an index of depressive symptoms. We found that in those with the highest symptoms of depression at baseline, SN rsFC declined most from pre- to post-SBP-Ag in the context of a robust eosinophilic response to challenge, but in those with low depressive symptoms SN rsFC was maintained or increased, even in those with the most pronounced SBP-Ag response. Thus, the maintenance of SN rsFC during inflammation may be a biomarker of resilience to depression, perhaps via more effective orchestration of large-scale brain network dynamics by the SN. These findings advance our understanding of the functional role of the SN during inflammation and inform treatment recommendations for those with comorbid inflammatory disease and depression. Primary tumor failure is common in patients treated with chemoradiation (CRT) for locally advanced NSCLC (LA-NSCLC). Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) yields high rates of primary tumor control (PTC) in early-stage NSCLC. This trial tested an SBRT boost to the primary tumor before the start of CRT to improve PTC. Patients with LA-NSCLC received an SBRT boost in 2 fractions (central location 12 Gy, peripheral location 16 Gy) to the primary tumor, followed by standard CRT (60 Gy in 30 fractions). The primary objective was PTC rate at 1 year, and the hypothesis was that the 1-year PTC rate would be ≥90%. Secondary objectives included objective response rate, regional and distant control, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS). Correlative studies included functional magnetic resonance imaging and blood-based miRNA analysis. The study enrolled 21 patients (10 men and 11 women); the median age was 62 years (range, 52-78). The median pretreatment primary tumor size was 5.0 cm (range, 1.0-8.3). The most common nonhematologic toxicities were pneumonitis, fatigue, esophagitis/dysphagia, dyspnea, and cough. Only 1 treatment-related grade 4 nonhematologic toxicity occurred (respiratory failure/radiation pneumonitis), and no grade 5 toxicities occurred. The objective response rate at 3 and 6 months was 72.7% and 80.0%, respectively, and PTC at 1 and 2 years was 100% and 92.3%, respectively. The 2-year regional and distant control rates were 81.6% and 70.3%, respectively. Disease-free survival and overall survival at 2 years were 46.1% and 50.3%, respectively, and median survival was 37.8 months. Functional magnetic resonance imaging detected a mean relative decrease in blood oxygenation level–dependent signal of –87.1% (P =.05), and miR.142.3p was correlated with increased risk of grade ≥3 pulmonary toxicity (P =.01). Dose escalation to the primary tumor using upfront SBRT appears feasible and safe. PTC was high and other oncologic endpoints compared favorably to standard treatment. Chronic insomnia disorder (CID) is commonly associated with mood disorders. The cingulate gyrus (CG) plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of CID and anxiety. However, the specific characteristics of altered brain networks in the CG in CID with anxiety remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of CG functional connectivity (FC) in CID with and without anxiety. Methods: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was conducted on 92 CID and 36 healthy controls (HC). CID was divided into CID with anxiety (CID-A, N = 37) and CID without anxiety (CID-NA, N = 55) groups based on anxiety scores. Using the Human Brainnetome Atlas, the subregion CG FC network was constructed. Compared with HC, CID showed significantly decreased CG FC with the precuneus, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), and hippocampus, while showing significantly increased CG FC with the middle temporal gyrus (MTG)/superior temporal gyrus (STG). In contrast, CID-A showed significantly decreased CG FC with the salience network (insular, putamen) and default mode network (MTG/STG and inferior parietal lobule), while showing significantly increased CG FC with the thalamus and MFG compared to CID-NA. Further, CID-A and CID-NA could be classified with 84.21 % accuracy by using the CG FCs as features. Among these features, the CG FC with MFG, thalamus, and putamen had the highest contribution weights. This study revealed specific changes in the brain network of the CG subregion in CID-A. Objective: The objective of this study is to compare the differences in effective connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) subsystems between patients with Parkinson's disease with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and patients with Parkinson's disease with normal cognition (PD-CN). The mechanisms underlying DMN dysfunction in PD-MCI patients and its association with clinical cognitive function in PD-MCI are aimed to be investigated. Methods: The spectral dynamic causal model (spDCM) was employed to analyze the effective connectivity of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in the resting state for the DMN subsystems, which include the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), left and right angular gyrus (LAG, RAG) in 23 PD-MCI and 22 PD-CN patients, respectively. The effective connectivity values of DMN subsystems in the two groups were statistically analyzed using a two-sample t-test. The Spearman correlation analysis was used to test the correlation between the effective connectivity values of the subsystems with significant differences between the two groups and the clinical cognitive function (as measured by Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA) score). Results: Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in the effective connections of MPFC-LAG and LAG-PCC between the two patient groups (MPFC-LAG: t = -2.993, p < 0.05; LAG-PCC: t = 2.174, p < 0.05). Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental illness, with high rates of co-morbid depression and suicidality. Despite the importance of optimizing treatment in BPD, little is known about how neural processes relate to individual treatment response. This study examines how baseline regional brain blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) activation during a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) task of emotion regulation is related to treatment response following a six-month randomized clinical trial of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) treatment. Unmedicated females with BPD (N = 37), with recent suicidal behavior or self-injury, underwent an fMRI task in which negative personal memories were presented and they were asked to distance (i.e., downregulate their emotional response) or immerse (i.e., experience emotions freely). Patients were then randomized to DBT (N = 16) or SSRI (N = 21) treatment, with baseline and post-treatment depression and BPD severity assessed. BOLD activity in prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate, and insula was associated with distancing. Baseline BOLD during distancing in dorsolateral, ventrolateral, and orbital prefrontal cortex (dlPFC, vlPFC, OFC) differentially predicted depression response across treatment groups, with higher activity predicting better response in the SSRI group, and lower activity predicting better response in the DBT group. Findings indicate that greater prefrontal engagement during emotion regulation may predict more antidepressant benefit from SSRIs, whereas lower engagement may predict better response to DBT. Depression is closely related to suicidal ideation (SI); however, it is unclear who is most vulnerable to SI within the context of depression. Research suggests that individual differences in emotion reactivity and regulation may be potential moderators of the link between depression and SI. Therefore, the current study tested this hypothesis using objective markers of emotion reactivity and volitional cognitive regulation capacity during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Adults (n = 91) with active SI completed validated self-report measures of current depressive symptoms and SI severity. Participants completed an fMRI task designed to probe neural response to aversive stimuli and during cognitive reappraisal – a form of volitional emotion regulation. Activation of the amygdala during aversive emotion reactivity was measured. Activation of ventrolateral, dorsolateral, and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (vlPFC, dlPFC, and dmPFC) during cognitive reappraisal were also measured. A series of hierarchical linear regressions testing the unique and interactive effects of depression symptoms and neural activation on severity of SI were conducted. Analyses revealed a depression x amygdala activation interaction. The positive association between depression and SI severity was more robust in the context of high amygdala reactivity than low amygdala reactivity. Analyses also indicated there was no PFC activity (neural cognitive reappraisal) by depression interaction. Psychoactive medications were allowed and all participants endorsed suicidal intent. To investigate the neural mechanism underlying functional reorganization and motor coordination strategies in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP). Whole brain blood oxygen level-dependent signals were measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method to identify pain-induced changes in regional spontaneous brain activity. A novel approach based on the surface electromyogram (EMG) system and fine-wire electrodes was used to record EMG signals in the deep multifidus, superficial multifidus, and erector spinae. In cLBP, compared with healthy groups, ALFF was higher in the medial prefrontal, primary somatosensory, primary motor, and inferior temporal cortices, whereas it was lower in the cerebellum and anterior cingulate and posterior cingulate cortices. Furthermore, the decrease in the average EMG activity of the 3 lumbar muscles in the cLBP group was positively correlated with the ALFF values of the primary somatosensory cortex, motor cortex, precuneus, and middle temporal cortex but significantly negatively correlated with the ALFF values of the medial prefrontal and inferior temporal cortices. Interestingly, the correlation between the functional activity in the cerebellum and the EMG activity varied in the lumbar muscles. These findings suggest a functional association between changes in spontaneous brain activity and altered voluntary neuromuscular activation patterns of the lumbar paraspinal muscles, providing new insights into the mechanisms underlying pain chronicity as well as important implications for developing novel therapeutic targets of cLBP. Purpose: The study aims to analyze alterations in dynamic functional connectivity density (dFCD) and effective connectivity (dEC) patterns using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), hypothesizing that overactive bladder (OAB) patients will exhibit distinct dFCD and dEC patterns, reflecting altered neural communication underlying the OAB. Methods: Forty‐three female OAB patients and 40 female healthy controls (HC) underwent resting‐state fMRI. Sliding window correlation was used to calculate the variability of the dFCD. The changes in dFCD‐based dEC between the two groups were examined using Granger causal analysis. To describe the time‐varying Granger causality, a sliding‐window approach was utilized to divide time courses into a group of windows. We adopted a k‐means clustering method to cluster all matrices into discrete connectivity states. Results: Compared with HC, OAB females consistently had a dFCD (decreased) in the left anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and left medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) (p < 0.05, GRF corrected). In state 1, OAB patients had excitatory effective connections from bilateral ACC to left mPFC in comparison to HC. In state 2, there was an increase in dEC from the SMA to the mPFC. Participants with OAB showed significantly more inhibitory dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) connections between the left ACC and the right ACC in state 4, as well as an excitatory dEC connection between the right dlPFC and the left ACC in state 2 (p < 0.05, GRF corrected). Objectives: The objective of this study is to explore the functional connectivity (FC) of the cerebellum during the storage phase of micturition, through detecting spontaneous blood‐oxygen‐level dependent signal between the cerebellum and different brain regions using a high‐resolution 7 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. Materials and Methods: We recruited healthy individuals with no reported history of neurological disease or lower urinary tract (LUT) symptoms. Participants were asked to drink 500 mL of water and then empty their bladders before entering the MRI scanner. They underwent a T1‐weighted anatomical scan, followed by an initial (8 min) empty bladder resting state functional MRI (rs‐fMRI) acquisition. Once subjects felt the desire to void, a second rs‐fMRI scan was obtained, this time with a full bladder state. We established a priori cerebellar regions of interest from the literature to perform seed‐to‐voxel analysis using nonparametric statistics based on the Threshold Free Cluster Enhancement method and utilized a voxel threshold of p < 0.05. Results: Twenty individuals (10 male and 10 female) with a median age of 25 years (IQR [3.5]) participated in the study. We placed 31 different 4‐mm spherical seeds throughout the cerebellum and assessed their FC with the remainder of the brain. Three of these (left cerebellar tonsil, right posterolateral lobe, right posterior lobe) showed significant differences in connectivity when comparing scans conducted with a full bladder to those with an empty bladder. Additionally, we observed sex differences in FC, with connectivity being higher in women during the empty bladder condition. Conclusion: Our initial findings reveal, for the first time, that the connectivity of the cerebellar network is modulated by bladder filling and is associated with LUT function. Purpose: To mitigate the B0/B1+ sensitivity of velocity‐selective inversion (VSI) pulse trains for velocity‐selective arterial spin labeling (VSASL) by implementing adiabatic refocusing. This approach aims to achieve artifact‐free VSI‐based perfusion imaging through single‐pair label‐control subtractions, reducing the need for the currently required four‐pair dynamic phase‐cycling (DPC) technique when using a velocity‐insensitive control. Methods: We introduce a Fourier‐transform VSI (FT‐VSI) train that incorporates sinc‐modulated hard excitation pulses with MLEV‐8‐modulated adiabatic hyperbolic secant refocusing pairs. We compare performance between this train and the standard composite refocusing train, including with and without DPC, for dual‐module VSI VSASL. We evaluate (1) simulated velocity‐selective profiles and subtraction fidelity across a broad B0/B1+ range, (2) subtraction fidelity in phantoms, and (3) image quality, artifact presence, and gray‐matter perfusion heterogeneity (as measured by the spatial coefficient of variation) in healthy human subjects. Results: Adiabatic refocusing significantly improves FT‐VSI robustness to B0/B1+ inhomogeneity for a single label‐control subtraction. Subtraction fidelity is dramatically improved in both simulation and phantoms compared with composite refocusing without DPC, and is similar compared with DPC methods. In humans, marked artifacts seen with the non‐DPC composite refocusing approach are eliminated, corroborated by significantly reduced gray‐matter heterogeneity (via lower spatial coefficient of variation values). Conclusion: A novel VSASL labeling train using adiabatic refocusing pulses for VSI was found to reduce artifacts related to B0/B1+ inhomogeneity, thereby providing an alternative to DPC and its associated limitations, which include increased vulnerability to physiological noise and motion, reduced functional MRI applicability, and suboptimal data censoring. Purpose: To develop and demonstrate a fast 3D fMRI acquisition technique with high spatial resolution over a reduced FOV, named k‐t 3D reduced FOV imaging (3D‐rFOVI). Methods: Based on 3D gradient‐echo EPI, k‐t 3D‐rFOVI used a 2D RF pulse to reduce the FOV in the in‐plane phase‐encoding direction, boosting spatial resolution without increasing echo train length. For image acceleration, full sampling was applied in the central k‐space region along the through‐slab direction (kz) for all time frames, while randomized undersampling was used in outer kz regions at different time frames. Images were acquired at 3T and reconstructed using a method based on partial separability. fMRI detection sensitivity of k‐t 3D‐rFOVI was quantitively analyzed with simulation data. Human visual fMRI experiments were performed to evaluate k‐t 3D‐rFOVI and compare it with a commercial multiband EPI sequence. Results: The simulation data showed that k‐t 3D‐rFOVI can detect 100% of fMRI activations with an acceleration factor (R) of 2 and ˜80% with R = 6. In the human fMRI data acquired with 1.5‐mm spatial resolution and 800‐ms volume TR (TRvol), k‐t 3D‐rFOVI with R = 4 detected 46% more activated voxels in the visual cortex than the multiband EPI. Additional fMRI experiments showed that k‐t 3D‐rFOVI can achieve TRvol of 480 ms with R = 6, while reliably detecting visual activation. Conclusions: k‐t 3D‐rFOVI can simultaneously achieve a high spatial resolution (1.5‐mm isotropically) and short TRvol (480‐ms) at 3T. Semantic verbal fluency (SVF) impairment is present in several neurological disorders. Although activation in SVF-related areas has been reported, how these regions are connected and their functional roles in the network remain divergent. We assessed SVF static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) and effective connectivity in healthy participants using functional magnetic resonance imaging. We observed activation in the inferior frontal (IFG), middle temporal (pMTG) and angular gyri (AG), anterior cingulate (AC), insular cortex, and regions of the superior, middle, and medial frontal gyri (SFG, MFG, MidFG). Our static FC analysis showed a highly interconnected task and resting state network. Increased connectivity of AC with the pMTG and AG was observed for the task. The dynamic FC analysis provided circuits with connections similarly modulated across time and regions related to category identification, language comprehension, word selection and recovery, word generation, inhibition of speaking, speech planning, and articulatory planning of orofacial movements. Finally, the effective connectivity analysis provided a network that best explained our data, starting at the AG and going to the pMTG, from which there was a division between the ventral and dorsal streams. The SFG and MFG regions were connected and modulated by the MidFG, while the inferior regions formed the ventral stream. Therefore, we successfully assessed the SVF network, exploring regions associated with the entire processing, from category identification to word generation. Objectives: This study is aimed at evaluating gender differences in neural activity change response to the acupuncture on left Jianyu (LI 15) in healthy volunteers. Methods: Forty healthy volunteers (20 males and 20 females) received 20‐min acupuncture on left LI 15 and underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans before and after acupuncture. Amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in the 0.01–0.08 Hz range were determined for both scans. Paired t‐tests were performed on ALFF between two scans separately for the male and female groups to identify neural changes related to acupuncture. Results: After acupuncture, males showed significantly increased ALFF in the left cerebellum and right angular gyrus but decreased ALFF in the left precentral gyrus, left inferior occipital gyrus, and right fusiform gyrus. However, the ALFF change in females is almost negligible. Conclusions: Brain functional activity in response to acupuncture on left LI 15 is noticeably different between males and females. This is preliminary evidence that gender may be an important factor for optimal clinically personalized acupuncture therapy for poststroke shoulder pain in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Temporal lobe epilepsy （TLE） is a common type of epilepsy. It may lead to cognitive impairment when it becomes recurrent. However, how it happens remains unclear. Recently, noninvasive resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging （rs-fMRI） has been used comprehensively in the clinical diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy-associated cognitive impairment for its high temporal and spatial resolution. To better understand the effectiveness of rs-fMRI in the diagnosis, his paper reviews the relevant literature, comprehensively analyzing the epileptogenic foci localization and neural network alterations displayed by rs-fMRI and exploring the insight to the mechanism of temporal lobe epilepsy-associated cognitive impairment. Moreover, the paper has discussed the rs-fMRI's potential in predicting surgical outcomes and machine learning applications. Introduction: Adolescence is a fundamental period of transformation, encompassing extensive physical, psychological, and behavioral changes. E ective health risk assessment during this stage is crucial for timely intervention, yet traditional methodologies often fail to accurately predict mental and behavioral health risks due to the intricacy of neural dynamics and the scarcity of quality-annotated fMRI datasets. Methods: This study introduces an innovative deep learning-based framework for health risk assessment in adolescents by employing a combination of a two-dimensional convolutional autoencoder (2DCNN-AE) with multi-sequence learning and multi-scale asynchronous correlation information extraction techniques. This approach facilitates the intricate analysis of spatial and temporal features within fMRI data, aiming to enhance the accuracy of the risk assessment process. Results: Upon examination using the Adolescent Risk Behavior (AHRB) dataset, which includes fMRI scans from 174 individuals aged 17--22, the proposed methodology exhibited a significant improvement over conventional models. It attained a precision of 83.116%, a recall of 84.784%, and an F1-score of 83.942%, surpassing standard benchmarks in most pertinent evaluative measures. Discussion: The results underscore the superior performance of the deep learning-based approach in understanding and predicting health-related risks in adolescents. Effective health promotion may benefit from understanding how persuasion emerges. While earlier research has identified brain regions implicated in persuasion, these studies often relied on event-related analyses and frequently simplified persuasive communications. The present study investigates the neural basis of valuation change induced by a persuasive healthy eating call, employing naturalistic stimuli. Fifty healthy participants performed two blocks of a bidding task, in which they had to bid on sugar-containing, sugar-free, and nonedible products during functional MRI. In between the two blocks, they listened to a persuasive healthy eating call that influenced their bidding behavior. Intriguingly, participants who resisted persuasion exhibited increased synchronization of brain activity during listening in several regions, including default mode network structures. Additionally, intersubject functional connectivity among these brain regions was found to be weaker in persuaded individuals. These results emphasize the individualized nature of processing persuasive messages, challenging conventional interpretations of synchronized neural activity.
