Fatigue strength of a short carbon fiber reinforced polyamide (SCF/PA) composite fabricated using a press forming technique is examined. Unlike an injection-molded SCF/PA composite, this one exhibits in-plane isotropy as well as through-thickness uniformity. Fatigue tests on the SCF/PA composite are carried out at different stress ratios and temperatures, respectively. The fatigue test results show that the S-N relationship for the SCF/PA composite significantly depends on stress ratio, and fatigue degradation occurs most rapidly at the critical stress ratio, regardless of test temperature. The fatigue stress for a given life decreases with temperature. The reduction in fatigue strength with temperature correlates well with the reduction in static strength with temperature. Accordingly, the effect of temperature on fatigue life for each of different constant values of stress ratio can approximately be removed by normalizing fatigue stress with respect to static strength. The full shape of constant fatigue life diagram for the press-formed SCF/PA composite is identified for each of different test temperatures. It is shown to incline toward the direction of positive mean stress, regardless of test temperature. A difference in shape of CFL diagram between the press-formed and injection-molded composites is addressed. This study demonstrates that the anisomorphic constant life diagram approach with temperature as the parameter allows adequately predicting the constant fatigue life diagram and thus the S-N curve for the SCF/PA composite over the whole range of mean stress at any temperature in the tested range. We report on a study of [ital W]+ photon production in approximately 20 pb[sup [minus]1] of [ital p][minus][ital [bar p]] collisions at [radical][ital s]=1.8 TeV recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Our results are in good agreement with standard model expectations and are used to obtain limits on anomalous [ital CP]-conserving [ital WW][gamma] couplings of [minus]2.3[lt][Delta][kappa][lt]2.2 for [lambda]=0 and [minus]0.7[lt][lambda][lt]0.7 for [Delta][kappa]=0 at 95% C.L. We obtain the same limits for [ital CP]-violating couplings. These results provide limits on the higher-order electromagnetic moments of the [ital W] boson of 0.8[lt][ital g][sub [ital W]][lt]3.1 for [ital q][sup [ital e]][sub [ital W]]=1 and [minus]0.6[lt][ital q][sup [ital e]][sub [ital W]][lt]2.7 for [ital g][sub [ital W]]=2 at 95% C.L.

The average b-hadron lifetime has been measured using a high statistics sample of {ital B} {r_arrow} {ital J}/{psi}{Chi} decays recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We use a sample with an integrated luminosity of {approx} 90 {ital pb}{sup -1} recorded during the 1994-95 running period. The decay vertices of {approx} 62656 inclusive {ital J}/{psi} {r_arrow} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} candidates have been reconstructed using information from a silicon vertex-detector. The measured {ital B}lifetime, which is the average over all b-hadrons produced in {ital p}{ital {anti p}} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV weighted by their branching ratios into {ital J}/{psi}, is 1.524 {+-} 0.015 ({ital stat}){sup +0.035}{sub -0.026} ({ital sys}) ps. The precision of this measurement is significantly improved compared to the inclusive lifetime measurement published previously using {approx} 10 {ital pb}{sup -1}.

We present the first general measurements (invariant-mass, transverse-energy, and angular distributions) of the process, p̄p→γ+2 jets+X, using data collected by the CDF at Fermilab. We compare the data with predictions from a tree-level QCD calculation and the PYTHIA shower Monte Carlo program. Our data sample is particularly sensitive to contributions from initial- and final-state radiation of photons and jets. Using the PYTHIA Monte Carlo program, we contrast the kinematical distributions for direct photon production with those for initial- and final-state photon radiation (bremsstrahlung). Based on the angular distributions, we find that our data favor a mixture of bremsstrahlung and direct photon production, as predicted, over either process alone.

We present the first measurement of the jet pseudorapidity distribution in direct photon events from a sample of pp̄ collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV, recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from hard quark-gluon Compton scattering, qg→qγ, with the final state quark producing the jet of hadrons. The jet pseudorapidity distribution in this model is sensitive to parton momentum fractions between 0.015 and 0.15. We find that the shape of the measured pseudorapidity distribution agrees well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations.

We search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays of the top quark t → qy and t → qZ (here q represents the c and u quarks) in pp collisions at √ s = 1.8 TeV. We use a dataset (∫ dt ∼ 110 pb-1) collected during the 1992-1995 run of the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set 95% confidence level limits on the branching fractions B(t → qy) < 3.2% and B(t → qZ) < 33%, consistent with the standard model.

We report a new measurement of dijet production by color-singlet exchange in p{ovr p} collisions at {radical}(s)=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. In a sample of events with two jets of transverse energy E{sup jet}{sub T}{gt}20 GeV , pseudorapidity in the range 1.8{lt}{vert_bar}{eta}{sup jet}{vert_bar}{lt}3.5 , and {eta}{sub 1}{eta}{sub 2}{lt}0 , we find that a fraction R=[1.13{plus_minus}0.12(stat){plus_minus} 0.11(syst)]{percent} has a pseudorapidity gap within {vert_bar}{eta}{vert_bar}{lt}1 between the jets that can be attributed to color-singlet exchnage. The fraction R shows no significant dependence on E{sup jet}{sub T} or on the pseudorapidity separation between the jets. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
