The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation^{1,2}. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole^3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4_{-1.1}^{+0.5} Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Report, 大阪河﨑リハビリテーション大学で 2006 年の開学から 2021 年度までに園芸療法士の資格を取得した在校生および卒業生数は 670名（理学療法学専攻 175 名、作業療法学専攻 428 名、言語聴覚学専攻 67 名）である。本研究の目的は、本学における今後の園芸療法の教育と臨床現場への普及について考察することである。調査対象は、近畿地方の本学の臨床実習施設および卒業生が就職した病院や福祉施設 210 施設とし、アンケート用紙を、1 施設に 1 部を郵送した。調査結果は、項目ごとに割合を算出した。自由記載欄については、AI テキストマイニングツールを用い、各単語の頻度を算出した。解析対象となった回答者 110 名のうち、47 名（42.7％）が園芸活動を導入していた。本学に求められていることは、活動報告や意見交換の場を設けること、農業や園芸の専門家による野菜作りや草花栽培について学ぶ場を設けることであると考えられた。また、園芸活動の効果を裏付ける基礎研究を進め、植物や園芸がヒトに与える良い影響について解明していくことも必要であることがわかった。

Powerful relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to be originated from the accretion of material onto the supermassive black hole (SMBH)1. The nearby radio galaxy M87 is one of the best examples of this phenomenon, and the recent detection of a black-hole shadow with the Event Horizon Telescope provided compelling evidence for this paradigm2. However, whether the central SMBH in M87 has a spin or not, a fundamental parameter of a BH along with the mass, remains unconstrained by observations since the appearance of the photon ring is rather insensitive to the spin2-4. A clue to this challenge is to trace the long-term evolution of the innermost jet base where the central BH and accretion disk tightly regulate its flow dynamics. Here we report an extensive analysis of the morphological evolution of the M87 jet nozzle based on 170 high-resolution radio images spanning more than two decades. The ensemble of the data reveals a periodic (a period of 11 years) variation of the jet direction with a peak-to-peak amplitude of ~10 deg on the sky. A successful fit of a precession model to the data as well as general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations strongly supports the presence of a spinning BH in M87, inducing a Lense-Thirring precession of a misaligned accretion disk by the frame-dragging effect5. Our results suggest that jet precession with a spinning BH can commonly exist in other more distant AGN but had evaded detection due to the small magnitude and long period of position angle variation.

Original Article, 〔目的〕大阪府貝塚市在住者を対象に新型コロナウィルス感染症拡大に伴う緊急事態宣言時の外出自粛の状況とオンライン動画などの視聴状況と保有デバイスおよび心身状態を調査することとした。〔対象と方法〕対象は大阪府貝塚市にて2018年、 2019年に実施したヘルスチェック事業参加者504名とした。郵送による自記式の悉皆調査を実施した。返送があった285名(56.5%)のうち、64歳以下の者および記入に欠損が有った者の50名を除く235名(46.6%)、平均年齢75.6±5.7歳を分析の対象とした。郵送時期は1回目の緊急事態宣言解除後2ヵ月経過した2020年7月から8月とした。調査項目は、緊急事態宣言時の外出自粛の程度、現在の体調、オンライン(インターネット)の活用状況、保有デバイスの種類および心身状態とした。〔結語〕対象者235名における緊急事態宣言中の外出自粛した者は227名(96.6%)であり、現在の体調について「良い」、「まあまあ良い」、「普通」に該当した者が212名(91.6%)であった。次に、オンライン動画活用状況では「オンライン(インターネット)で体操や運動の動画を見ていますか」について、 "はい" と回答した者は全体で30名(12.8%)であり, デバイスの保有状況はスマートフォンが131名(55.7%)、タブレット18名(7.6%)、パソコン18名(7.6%)であった。オンライン活用群30名は身体状況としてロコモ25スコアが良い傾向であった。[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to measure degrees of refraining from going out and watching online exercise videos in community- dwelling older adults in Kaizuka city, Osaka, Japan under the declaration of emergency situation on the first COVID-19 epidemic in 2020. [Subjects and method] A total of 504 participants of the health check project conducted in 2018 and 2019 in Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, were included. A self-administered survey was conducted via mail; data were collected from 285 people (56.5%). The analysis included 235 (46.6%) individuals with a mean age of 75.6 +- 5.7 years. Individuals aged 64 years or younger and those whose entries were incomplete were excluded. The mailing time was from July to August 2020, two months after the first emergency period ended. The survey items included the degree of refraining from going out when the emergency was declared, the current physical condition, the status of online (Internet) utilization, the type of device owned and physical and mental condition. [Conclusion] Of the 235 subjects, 227 (96.6%) refrained from going out during the state of emergency, and 212 (91.6%) were "good", "fairly good" or "normal" in their current physical condition. Next, in terms of online video utilization status, 30 (12.8%) of the respondents answered "yes" to "Are you watching gymnastics and exercise videos online (Internet)?" In addition, 131 (55.7%) of the devices used for watching internet videos were smartphones, 18 (7.6%) were tablets, and 18 (7.6%) were personal computers. The 30 (12.8%) people in the online use group tended to have a good GLFS 25 score, which indicated their physical condition.

Short Paper, 本研究の目的は、認知症高齢者を対象とした園芸療法プログラム中の発語量および品詞割合を調査し、園芸活動プログラムをより効果的に活用できる可能性について検討することである。対象者は、認知症高齢者5名とした(年齢範囲: 78～91歳, 男性1名・女性4名)。対象者に、6種類の園芸療法プログラムを実施し、全ての会話を記録した。対象者の会話から単語を抽出し、総単語数と品詞を算出・分類した. 総単語数は、園芸療法プログラムによる有意差が認められた。品詞出現割合も、園芸療法プログラムによる有意差が認められた。形容詞・感動詞の占める割合が多かったのは「押し花クラフト」で、植物を使った創作活動であった。今回の研究結果より、園芸療法プログラム内容によって発語量や品詞割合が異なることが明らかとなった。これは、プログラムに伴う効用や対象者への療法士の関わりが影響していることが理由の一つと考えられた。また、同じプログラムでも、療法士の対象者への関わりによって、対象者の園芸療法介入効果が左れる可能性があることが示唆された。

The fruit of Prunus mume (ume, also known as Japanese apricot) has been used as a functional food in Japan since ancient times. We previously reported that ume stimulates the differentiation of preosteoblastic cells. Osteocalcin (OCN) is secreted by osteoblasts, and there is known association with glucolipid metabolism and cognitive function. This study sought to clarify the relationship between ume extracts and OCN production both in vitro and in vivo. Alkaline phosphatase activity and OCN level in the ethyl acetate extracts of ume-treated extracts were significantly increased in preosteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells compared with the control group. In human study, serum OCN level was significantly higher in the high ume intake group than in the low intake group in community-dwelling participants over 60 years old. These results suggest that ume has the potential to upregulated OCN production both in vitro and in vivo.

Background Understanding the physical and mental changes in community‐dwelling elderly people is very important during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic when considering preventive measures. The purpose of this study was to clarify the changes of physical function and anxiety for activities of daily living in community‐dwelling older adults, focusing on locomotor function during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Methods The study participants were 127 older people who participated in successive surveys, in the summers of 2019 and again in 2020, after the state of emergency. The Locomo 25 questionnaire, Geriatric Depression Scale‐15 (GDS‐15) questionnaire, medical history, and number of people living together were self‐reported. The Locomo 25 covers six aspects of physical pain, movement‐related difficulty, usual care, daily activity, social activities, and anxiety. Results The paired samples t‐test revealed that Locomo 25 total scores in 2020 were significantly higher than those in 2019. The GDS‐15 score showed no significant difference. The comparison of scores for each item of the Locomo 25 revealed significantly higher scores in 2020 on Q21 (‘difficult to perform sports activity’, P = 0.0021), Q22 (‘restricted from meeting own friends’, P

The need for support and care is a major problem facing societies around the world. Locomotive syndrome (LS) refers to a condition in which people require healthcare services because of problems associated with locomotion. Oral dysfunction is also associated with various long-term care factors including activities of daily living. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between oral dysfunction and LS. The study participants were 407 elderly people living in a rural area in Japan. Evaluation of oral dysfunction was based on subjective judgment by each participant. LS was assessed using Locomo-25, which is a self-administered questionnaire and was defined by a Locomo-25 score ≥ 7 points. Those with a “decline in masticatory function” and “difficulty swallowing” had higher odds of LS than those without these dysfunctions (odds ratio (OR) = 2.134, 2.007, respectively). Furthermore, participants with a Locomo-25 score ≥ 11 had higher odds of a “decline in masticatory function” (OR = 2.657) than those with a Locomo-25 score

Here we present the first total and linearly polarized intensity images of this source obtained with the unprecedented 20 μas resolution of the EHT. J1924–2914 is a very compact flat-spectrum radio source with strong optical variability and polarization. In April 2017 the source was observed quasi-simultaneously with the EHT (April 5–11), the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (April 3), and the Very Long Baseline Array (April 28), giving a novel view of the source at four observing frequencies, 230, 86, 8.7, and 2.3 GHz. These observations probe jet properties from the subparsec to 100 pc scales. We combine the multifrequency images of J1924–2914 to study the source morphology. We find that the jet exhibits a characteristic bending, with a gradual clockwise rotation of the jet projected position angle of about 90° between 2.3 and 230 GHz. Linearly polarized intensity images of J1924–2914 with the extremely fine resolution of the EHT provide evidence for ordered toroidal magnetic fields in the blazar compact core. © 2022. Background: Oral dysfunction is related to long-term cares including activities of daily living. The objective of this study was to determine the association between oral function and the bone-related physiological substances osteocalcin (OC) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Methods: The study participants were 139 community-dwelling older people in Japan. Evaluation of oral dysfunction was based on subjective judgment by each participant. Blood analysis included OC, IGF-1, and albumin. Results: Univariate and multiple logistic analyses showed that IGF-1 was significantly associated with a “decline in masticatory function” (p = 0.0074 and p = 0.0308, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of IGF-1 levels revealed a threshold score of 108 ng/mL (p < 0.01) for discriminating a “decline in masticatory function”. Logistic regression analysis revealed that participants with an IGF-1 level ≤108 ng/mL had an odds ratio of 4.31 (p < 0.05) for a “decline in masticatory function”. No significant association was found between the OC level and oral dysfunction. Conclusions: These results suggest a possible relationship between lower serum IGF-1 levels and a decline in masticatory dysfunction in community-dwelling older people.

Original Article, [Purpose] This study investigated the multifaceted factors of inpatients and community-dwelling women with equivalent exercise capacity. [Participants and Methods] The subjects were 56 women (age 80.9 +- 7.0 years) discharged from the convalescent rehabilitation ward and 74 community-dwelling women (age 74.7 +- 5.3 years). We conducted a two-step test to examine subjects with regard to Locomo risk level 1 for age, grip strength, SMI, walking speed, Alb value, FFM, Kihon checklist, number of medications, presence or absence of low hone mineral density, and cognitive decline. [Results] There were significant differences in Alb value, walking speed, and low bone mineral density between the hospitalized group and the community-dwelling group. [Conclusion] It was suggested that the hospitalized group had undernutrition and a high fracture risk despite the similarity in exercise capacity.〔目的〕本研究の目的は女性で同等の運動能力の入院患者と地域在住者の多面的要因を調査することである。〔対象と方法〕対象は回復期リハビリテーション病棟を退院となった女性56名(平均年齢80.9±7.0歳)と地域在住女性74名(平均年齢74.7±5.3歳)とした。 2ステップテストを用いてロコモ度1に該当した者に対して、 年齢、 握力、 SMI、 歩行速度、 Alb値、 FFM、 基本チェックリスト、 服薬数、 骨密度低下の有無、 認知機能低下の有無の検討を行った。 〔結果〕入院群と地域在住群では、 Alb値、 歩行速度、 骨密度の低下に有意差を認めた。 〔結語〕運動能力が同等であっても入院群は栄養状態が低く、 骨折リスクが高いことが示唆された。

Because of its proximity and the large size of its black hole, M87 is one of the best targets for studying the launching mechanism of active galactic nucleus jets. Currently, magnetic fields are considered to be an essential factor in the launching and accelerating of the jet. However, current observational estimates of the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet are limited to the innermost part of the jet or to HST-1. No attempt has yet been made to measure the magnetic field strength in between. We aim to infer the magnetic field strength of the M87 jet out to a distance of several thousand $r_s$ by tracking the distance-dependent changes in the synchrotron spectrum of the jet from high-resolution very long baseline interferometry observations. In order to obtain high-quality spectral index maps, quasi-simultaneous observations at 22 and 43 GHz were conducted using the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) and the VLBA. We compared the spectral index distributions obtained from the observations with a model and placed limits on the magnetic field strengths as a function of distance. The overall spectral morphology is broadly consistent over the course of these observations. The observed synchrotron spectrum rapidly steepens from $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -0.7 at ~ 2 mas to $\alpha_{22-43 GHz}$ ~ -2.5 at ~ 6 mas. A spectral index model in which nonthermal electron injections inside the jet decrease with distance can adequately reproduce the observed trend. This suggests the magnetic field strength of the jet at a distance of 2 - 10 mas (~ 900 $r_s$ - ~ 4500 $r_s$ in the deprojected distance) has a range of $B=(0.3 - 1.0 G)(z/2 mas)^{-0.73}$. Extrapolating to the EHT scale yields consistent results, suggesting that the majority of the magnetic flux of the jet near the black hole is preserved out to ~ 4500 $r_s$ without significant dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. A.; Yu, Chen-Yu; Yu, Wei; Zeballos, Milagros; Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration., We present the first Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the Galactic center source associated with a supermassive black hole. These observations were conducted in 2017 using a global interferometric array of eight telescopes operating at a wavelength of λ = 1.3 mm. The EHT data resolve a compact emission region with intrahour variability. A variety of imaging and modeling analyses all support an image that is dominated by a bright, thick ring with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μas (68% credible interval). The ring has modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry and a comparatively dim interior. Using a large suite of numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the EHT images of Sgr A* are consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole with mass ∼4 × 106 M⊙, which is inferred to exist at this location based on previous infrared observations of individual stellar orbits, as well as maser proper-motion studies. Our model comparisons disfavor scenarios where the black hole is viewed at high inclination (i > 50°), as well as nonspinning black holes and those with retrograde accretion disks. Our results provide direct evidence for the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and for the first time we connect the predictions from dynamical measurements of stellar orbits on scales of 103–105 gravitational radii to event-horizon-scale images and variability. Furthermore, a comparison with the EHT results for the supermassive black hole M87* shows consistency with the predictions of general relativity spanning over three orders of magnitude in central mass. © 2022. We find that the Sgr A* data exhibit variability that exceeds what can be explained by the uncertainties in the data or by the effects of interstellar scattering. The magnitude of this variability can be a substantial fraction of the correlated flux density, reaching ∼100% on some baselines. Through an exploration of simple geometric source models, we demonstrate that ring-like morphologies provide better fits to the Sgr A* data than do other morphologies with comparable complexity. We develop two strategies for fitting static geometric ring models to the time-variable Sgr A* data; one strategy fits models to short segments of data over which the source is static and averages these independent fits, while the other fits models to the full data set using a parametric model for the structural variability power spectrum around the average source structure. Both geometric modeling and image-domain feature extraction techniques determine the ring diameter to be 51.8 ± 2.3 μas (68% credible intervals), with the ring thickness constrained to have an FWHM between ∼30% and 50% of the ring diameter. To bring the diameter measurements to a common physical scale, we calibrate them using synthetic data generated from GRMHD simulations. This calibration constrains the angular size of the gravitational radius to be ${4.8}_{-0.7}^{+1.4}$ μas, which we combine with an independent distance measurement from maser parallaxes to determine the mass of Sgr A* to be ${4.0}_{-0.6}^{+1.1}\times {10}^{6}$ M⊙. © 2022. This is the only stationary, vacuum, axisymmetric metric, without electromagnetic charge, that satisfies Einstein's equations and does not have pathologies outside of the event horizon. We present new constraints on potential deviations from the Kerr prediction based on 2017 EHT observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*). We calibrate the relationship between the geometrically defined black hole shadow and the observed size of the ring-like images using a library that includes both Kerr and non-Kerr simulations. We use the exquisite prior constraints on the mass-to-distance ratio for Sgr A* to show that the observed image size is within ∼10% of the Kerr predictions. We use these bounds to constrain metrics that are parametrically different from Kerr, as well as the charges of several known spacetimes. To consider alternatives to the presence of an event horizon, we explore the possibility that Sgr A* is a compact object with a surface that either absorbs and thermally reemits incident radiation or partially reflects it. Using the observed image size and the broadband spectrum of Sgr A*, we conclude that a thermal surface can be ruled out and a fully reflective one is unlikely. We compare our results to the broader landscape of gravitational tests. Together with the bounds found for stellar-mass black holes and the M87 black hole, our observations provide further support that the external spacetimes of all black holes are described by the Kerr metric, independent of their mass. © 2022. Original Article, [Purpose] This study investigated the relationship between subjective health impression and frailty among community-dwelling elderly persons. [Participants and Methods] In all, 215 (female 161) elderly persons participated in a survey, and the mean age was 73.6 +- 6.8 years. The measurement items were age, sex, BMI, muscle strength, SMI, gait speed, frailty, depression, cognitive function, subjective health impression, and number of medications. [Results] There were significant differences in subjective health impression, frailty, depression, and number of medications between a subjective healthy group and subjective unhealthy group. In addition, it was suggested that frailty, depression, and number of medications were independent related factors of subjective health impression. Short Paper, ＜目的＞本研究は、 地域在住高齢者における睡眠状況と園芸活動の関係を明らかにすることを目的とした。 ＜方法＞60歳以上の地域在住者213名(男性: 53名 女性: 160名、 平均年齢73.78±6.79歳)を対象とし、 睡眠状況については、 ピッツバーグ睡眠質問票日本語版(PSQI)を用い、 園芸活動については実施頻度について調査した。 ＜結果＞PSQI評価に基づく睡眠障害者は93名であった。 週2回以上の園芸活動実施者(園芸活動実施群)は95名、 週1回以下の園芸活動低頻度または非実施者(園芸活動非実施者)は、 118名であった。 PSQIの総合得点について、 園芸活動実施群と非実施群の2群で比較した結果、 有意差は認められなかった。 PSQI下位カテゴリーC1～C7(睡眠の質、 入眠困難、 睡眠時間、 睡眠効率、 睡眠困難、 眠剤の使用、 日中覚醒困難)7項目について比較した結果、 「C3睡眠時間」および「C6眠剤の使用」について有意差を認めた。 つまり園芸活動実施群は非実施群と比較して、 有意に睡眠時間が長く、 睡眠剤の使用が少なかった。 年齢と性を考慮したロジスティク回帰分析の結果、 園芸活動の有無と睡眠剤の使用が最も関係していた(P=0.004)。 ＜結語＞地域において日常的に園芸活動を行っている高齢者は、 睡眠剤の使用頻度が低いことが示唆された。 本結果により、 園芸活動を行っている高齢者は、 睡眠剤に頼らない入眠が得られていることが示唆された。

We report measurements of the gravitationally lensed secondary image—the first in an infinite series of so-called “photon rings”—around the supermassive black hole M87* via simultaneous modeling and imaging of the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations. The inferred ring size remains constant across the seven days of the 2017 EHT observing campaign and is consistent with theoretical expectations, providing clear evidence that such measurements probe spacetime and a striking confirmation of the models underlying the first set of EHT results. The residual diffuse emission evolves on timescales comparable to one week. We are able to detect with high significance a southwestern extension consistent with that expected from the base of a jet that is rapidly rotating in the clockwise direction. This result adds further support to the identification of the jet in M87* with a black hole spin-driven outflow, launched via the Blandford–Znajek process. We present three revised estimates for the mass of M87* based on identifying the modeled thin ring component with the bright ringlike features seen in simulated images, one of which is only weakly sensitive to the astrophysics of the emission region. All three estimates agree with each other and previously reported values. Our strongest mass constraint combines information from both the ring and the diffuse emission region, which together imply a mass-to-distance ratio of 4.20 − 0.06 + 0.12 μ as and a corresponding black hole mass of (7.13 ± 0.39) × 109 M ⊙, where the error on the latter is now dominated by the systematic uncertainty arising from the uncertain distance to M87*.

Anton; Zhang, Shuo; Zhao, Guang-Yao; Zhao, Shan-Shan.--This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted reuse, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited., We present a framework for characterizing the spatiotemporal power spectrum of the variability expected from the horizon-scale emission structure around supermassive black holes, and we apply this framework to a library of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations and associated general relativistic ray-traced images relevant for Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sgr A*. We find that the variability power spectrum is generically a red-noise process in both the temporal and spatial dimensions, with the peak in power occurring on the longest timescales and largest spatial scales. When both the time-averaged source structure and the spatially integrated light-curve variability are removed, the residual power spectrum exhibits a universal broken power-law behavior. On small spatial frequencies, the residual power spectrum rises as the square of the spatial frequency and is proportional to the variance in the centroid of emission. Beyond some peak in variability power, the residual power spectrum falls as that of the time-averaged source structure, which is similar across simulations; this behavior can be naturally explained if the variability arises from a multiplicative random field that has a steeper high-frequency power-law index than that of the time-averaged source structure. We briefly explore the ability of power spectral variability studies to constrain physical parameters relevant for the GRMHD simulations, which can be scaled to provide predictions for black holes in a range of systems in the optically thin regime. Our main approach is to compare resolved EHT data at 230 GHz and unresolved non-EHT observations from radio to X-ray wavelengths to predictions from a library of models based on time-dependent general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations, including aligned, tilted, and stellar-wind-fed simulations; radiative transfer is performed assuming both thermal and nonthermal electron distribution functions. We test the models against 11 constraints drawn from EHT 230 GHz data and observations at 86 GHz, 2.2 μm, and in the X-ray. All models fail at least one constraint. Light-curve variability provides a particularly severe constraint, failing nearly all strongly magnetized (magnetically arrested disk (MAD)) models and a large fraction of weakly magnetized models. A number of models fail only the variability constraints. We identify a promising cluster of these models, which are MAD and have inclination i ≤ 30°. They have accretion rate (5.2–9.5) × 10−9 M⊙ yr−1, bolometric luminosity (6.8–9.2) × 1035 erg s−1, and outflow power (1.3–4.8) × 1038 erg s−1. We also find that all models with i ≥ 70° fail at least two constraints, as do all models with equal ion and electron temperature; exploratory, nonthermal model sets tend to have higher 2.2 μm flux density; and the population of cold electrons is limited by X-ray constraints due to the risk of bremsstrahlung overproduction. Finally, we discuss physical and numerical limitations of the models, highlighting the possible importance of kinetic effects and duration of the simulations. © 2022. The Author(s). Purpose This study compared the effects of a combination of soy peptide supplementation and exercise with those of exercise only, on the cognitive function of elderly adults. Patients and methods This randomized, non-blinded, controlled clinical trial included 67 participants aged 60 years or more with non-cognitive dysfunction who were divided into two groups according to the intervention method: an exercise group (Ex group, n = 36) and an exercise plus nutrition group (Ex+Nt group, n = 31). The Ex group completed a memory training activity for 15 mins and aerobic exercise for 45 mins once a week for 90 days. The Ex+Nt group completed the same training plus received soy peptide for 90 days. The Mini-Mental Status Examination score, trail-making test A/B score, skeletal muscle mass index, grip strength, gait speed, and geriatric depression scale were measured at baseline and post intervention. For comparison between the pretest and posttest measurements to determine the intervention effects, a two-way analysis of variance was performed. The significance level was set at Results A two-way analysis of variance revealed significant time effects on trail-making test-A score, skeletal muscle index, grip strength, and gait speed in both groups. There were significant time x group interactions for greater increase in calculation score. Conclusion A combination of exercise and soy peptide supplementation was effective in improving a portion of cognitive function.

Background Cognitive decline is closely related to motor decline. Locomotive syndrome (LS) is defined as a state associated with a high risk of requiring support because of locomotive organ disorders, and can be evaluated using a questionnaire. This study aimed to clarify the effectiveness of daily goal-targeted exercise on cognitive function in two different populations classified by scores on the Locomo 25 questionnaire. Methods Seventy community-dwelling older people who participated in a 13-week health class were divided into two populations based on Locomo 25 scores: Results No significant differences were observed in age, years of education, body mass index, smooth muscle mass index, GDS-15 scores, or ACE-R scores between the non-LS and LS populations. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that Ex (odds ratio = 5.01, p = 0.002) for 13 weeks was significantly associated with increased cognitive function in the LS population. The Ex threshold for the increase in cognitive function based on receiver operating curve analysis was 2.29 metabolic equivalents of task (METs) × h (METs · h/day) (p = 0.047) in the LS population. After 13 weeks, ACE-R scores were significantly higher in the Ex ≥ 2.29 than in the Ex < 2.29 METs · h/day group (p = 0.024, ηp2 = 0.241) in the LS population based on two-way analysis of covariance. Furthermore, a significant increase in the ACE-R memory domain was seen in the Ex ≥ 2.29 group (p = 0.035, ηp2 = 0.213). Conclusions These results suggest that Ex ≥ 2.29 METs · h/day is important for improving cognitive function in LS populations.
